City Council considers Tractor Supply Co.

By CARMEN RODGERS Staff Writer

During Monday night’s open meeting at City Hall, Hank Golden, chairman of the Tallassee Redevelopment Authority spoke to the city council about bringing Tractor Supply Company to Patton Plaza. Currently, the only operating business in

the shopping center is T-Fit, which just recently moved into the former Dollar General space. However, before T-Fit moved in, the shopping center sat empty for nearly two years. “It’s been empty since Winn-Dixie closed and Wal-Mart moved,” Golden said. “We had a potential client. We kept the dialog going until February.

It became more solid at that point in time and on March 29 the TRA met with developers and the potential client, Tractor Supply.” Golden explained to the city council that this company is reputable, has locations nationwide, and its headquarters are in Brentwood, Tennessee. Furthermore, Golden explained how fresh the TRA is

The 1220 Café was packed with people, food and fun Thursday evening as individuals streamed in to enjoy entertainment, good company and delicious cuisine, all for the Community Hospice Care’s Charity Night. Event hours were from 4:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. and the First Baptist Church of Tallassee Praise Band provided entertainment for the evening. Besides raising funding for the nonprofit organization, the Volunteer of the Year was introduced for the Community Hospice of Tallassee. This year’s Volunteer of the Year recipient is Norma Billings of Eclectic. She and her husband, Lee, both volunteer for Community Hospice Care on a regular basis. There were several reasons for honoring Billings as volunteer of the year. “She’s always there,” said Wendi Bearden, Hospice Chaplain. “She agreed to be on a committee to help recruit new volunteers and also she looked for ways to improve the program. We are looking into pet therapy, and that’s one of the things she (Billings) is involved See CHARITY • Page 3

begin at 7 p.m. The show will be a montage of this year’s performances. “It’s an end of the year showcase for us,” said Jessica Day, choir director at Tallassee High School. “When you come to the Spring Show you can expect to see things from ‘Bye Bye Birdie,’ the musical that we did. We will do two numbers from it.” The performance will also include

the entire performance from all three show choirs, which include The New Image Show, Gold Edition Show and the Divas Show. “So if you weren’t able to come to a competition, you’ll be able to see those showcased,” Day said. In addition, every class will be performing different numbers. “The combined men’s chorus will be doing three different numbers together,”

at negotiating deals such as this. “We are brand new at negotiating any deals,” he said. “We really have no guidance, because this is the first time any of us have done this. This is the first time that we have been approached with this opportunity.”

Barbara Dennis was busy Saturday as she took part in the annual Team Up to Clean Up. Dennis routinely picks up trash in the area as a way to stay active and to help keep Tallassee clean and beautiful.

This is the time of year that people open their windows and doors to allow the fresh spring air to fill their home. Many choose to spring clean during this time of year as well. This is why people from all areas of Tallassee joined together to clean the city this past Saturday by participating in the Team Up to Clean Up. Teams were out in full force almost every neighborhood; however, Jordanville may have had the most coordinated team effort in the city. Linda Coppinger allowed volunteers to use her lot as the designated pick-up and drop-off area for trash collected and from there, the debris was taken to the Advanced Disposal dumpster at City Hall. Saturday afternoon, the dumpster was filled to the brim with

Therefore, many people took advantage to get that unwanted clutter out of the way. “The seventh annual Chamber of Commerce Team Up to Clean Up was a great success,” said Whitney Hester, with the Tallassee Chamber of Commerce and coordinator of this year’s Team Up to Clean Up event. “We had close to 200 community members on registered litter teams. Special thanks to Councilman Blalock who organized a meeting to get members of Jordanville involved with the cleanup effort.” Three teams were registered with this group, The YaYa’s with team
