Obituaries Anne Lois Stover

Anne ‘Lois’ Stover, 95, of Huntsville, passed away April 19, 2017. She was born in Montgomery, Alabama, to Joel and Aslean Speigner who predeceased her. She was married to James Robert Stover for 65 years, until he passed away in 2013.

They lived in New Orleans, New York City, Palos Verdes, California and Houston, Texas, during his long career with Shell Oil Corporation. They had almost 30 happy years of retirement living at Willow Point on Lake Martin in Alexander City, Alabama, before moving to Redstone Village in Huntsville,

Tabby Edwards has been named retail sales manager for Tallapoosa Publishers, Inc, assisting with day to day operations of the advertising sales team in both Alexander City and Elmore counties.

She was formerly a sales and marketing representative for the company. TPI Advertising Director Tippy Hunter said having Edwards’ knowledge in a leadership role will be valuable to Edwards the team at TPI. “Our business is growing, and with more initiatives planned, the decision to promote Tabby allows us to better focus on future growth,” Hunter said. “She has a strong understanding of marketing and promotion, and with her extensive business background, Tabby has proven herself a great addition to our team.

One Year Later

One year ago this week our lives were turned upside down. While attending a carshow in New Site Alabama our two children left to go pick up a vehicle they had left with a mechanic. After dodging an oncoming car Abbey Salinas swerved off the road onto the shoulder, she then lost control of the truck she was driving resulting in it flipping over six times end over end. Both her and her brother were ejected from the truck.

Gun bill moving through legislature Bill would eliminate the need for a conceal carry permit in the state passed Senate in 52-8 vote

The Alabama Senate passed a bill on Tuesday that eliminates the need for a county sheriff issued concealed carry permit for residents to carry a gun, but local law enforcement officials say carry permits add another level of safeguards that they would hate to lose.

The bill passed by a vote of 25-8, with all eight

Democrats in the Senate voting against it.

According to Tallapoosa County Sheriff Jimmy Abbett, the Sheriffs Association voted to voice opposition to the bill. He said that he is a supporter of the Second Amendment, but said that a permit should not stand in the way of those rights.

“It would increase the likelihood of individuals having firearms that shouldn’t have them in the first place,” Abbett said. “Under the current law, which I feel is a very workable process, it allows

for three levels of checks. In addition to the state and national databases, we have knowledge of local incidents, for instance misdemeanors and domestic violence situations.

“It’s just a safety issue – plain and simple. It’s for the safety of the individual with a gun to make sure they are capable of understanding the responsibility.

County gets good news on jobless numbers

Kiwanis Club fair returns to Alex City next week

The annual Alexander City Kiwanis Club Fair returns to town next week following last year’s hiatus. As it was in the past, the event will be held in the main football stadium parking lot at the Alexander City Sportplex.

“The fair is back this year, and we’re working with a new company, Primetime Amusements,” Chairman of the Fair Committee Cam Caldwell said. “They called us this year to work with us, hoping to start a long-term relationship.”

Tallapoosa County got good news on the economic front Friday, as the Alabama Department of Labor said the county’s unemployment rate fell to just 5.1 percent in March.

That level is down from the 5.7 percent jobless rate the county posted in February and significantly better than the 5.8 percent unemployment rate recorded in the area in March 2016.

Those numbers make the county’s rate even better than the state average.

Alabama Department of Labor Secretary Fitzgerald Washington said Friday that Alabama’s preliminary, seasonally adjusted March unemployment rate was 5.8 percent, down from February’s rate of 6.2 percent, and below March 2016’s rate of 5.9 percent. March’s rate represents 128,757 unemployed persons, compared to 136,667 in February and 128,478 in March 2016.

The temperatures are rising and so is the number of boats on Lake Martin.

So Friday, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Marine Patrol Division and newly appointed Secretary Hal Taylor took media on the water to talk boating and water safety.

“Early warm temperatures have people out enjoying the weather and recreational

activities on the water,” said Taylor, who took over the top spot just two weeks after Stan Stabler was forced out of office.

“We’ve already helped investigate four drownings and it’s only April. Now two of those were found to be electrocutions, but the point is that warmer water temperatures mean that people are already on the water in boats and in the water swimming.

Local students have exciting day at Sylacauga Special Olympics

By DONALD CAMPBELL Staff Writer

Sixteen students from the Alexander City School System traveled to Sylacauga on Friday to participate in a Special Olympics day for children and adults with special needs throughout the area, including individuals from Sylacauga High School and the South Talladega Arc. Events at these games included 50- and 100-meter dashes, a softball toss and a standing long jump.

“This is the first one in 20 years we’ve participated in,” said Benjamin Russell softball coach Jessica Johnson.

Out of the several events

being held at the games, “Each athlete can only participate in three events,” she added.

Coordinator Amy Ward detailed how one of this year’s goals was to have some of the students with special needs participate in the event.

“Over 70 students qualified for this, and 16 were able to come and participate today.

We hope to double that next year,” she said.

As the students prepared to board the bus and head to the competition, they were given a rousing send-off.

We can lead by example to keep our area clean

S

ummer is near and before you know it school will be out.

Not only will area residents be heading out and about to enjoy their free time, but also visitors from far and wide who have heard about our precious Lake Martin will be headed this way as well.

Seeing as Earth Day falls this weekend we thought it’d be as good a time as any to remind area residents to take pride in our area and keep it clean. We want to not only make a good impression on others, but we want the area to reflect the caring people that also live here.

We applaud the efforts of agencies like Lake Martin Resource Association that act as a resource for residents to keep our area clean through trash walks or cleanup days. We encourage residents to get involved in activities that promote sustainable living.

We’re blessed to live in such a beautiful place, and even more importantly how we treat the Earth today will dictate the conditions future generations will live in.

As most mothers teach us, we should clean up what we mess up.

Easier said than done when your primary focus is enjoying yourself, we know.

Here are a few ways we can reduce our waste and be proactive about keeping our area clean while we enjoy ourselves: • Use refillable water bottles or tumblers while out instead of plastic • Keep a box of trash bags on your boat or in your vehicle handy so you’re able to pick up trash even if there isn’t a trash can nearby • See an illegal dumpsite? Report it to your local law enforcement agency As we enjoy the weather and many recreational activities our area provides us let’s try to leave every place we visit not just the way it was, but a little bit better.

In doing so we have the power to set the standard of behavior and treatment of our area and one step at a time help reduce pollution and illegal dumpsites that harm the ecosystems in our area, our state and our country.

Five small gambles that leaders should learn to make

laying it too safe as a leader can stunt your personal and professional growth as well as that of your team. Instead, practice the under-utilized skill of taking the intelligent gamble.

I learned this as a rookie gambler on a budget heading to Vegas with some high rollers. I asked a friend for advice on how to win, and he responded with something totally contrary to what I thought: “Don’t go to Vegas to win. Go to get fleeced slowly.”

After some research, I gravitated toward Pai Gow Poker where many of the hands push, resulting in a truly low-risk game. The results were perfect: Gradual improvement.

Playing all night without losing much.

Learning from winning and losing.

Enjoying the camaraderie (and free drinks).

Of course, my high rolling friends at first shunned me for playing it. But by the end of the night, they saw the beauty and all joined in.

We played it until we were ready for breakfast the next morning, and most of us finished slightly up or with minimal loss.

Leaders can learn a lot from this experience.

It’s important to practice taking the intelligent gamble. It accelerates your development, boosts your results, and makes work more fun… all without bringing the house down.

Do this by placing small bets in your work day and taking frequent micro-risks.

The objective isn’t to never lose–the objective is lose small enough so you can keep playing.

Here are five good examples: 1. Make a confident decision based on the best information available It’s tempting to hesitate

for more analysis. Truly “great” data is rarely available, so make a gamble with what you have. Trust that if the gamble doesn’t pay off, you and your team will be able to successfully improvise your next step to make things right.

When I led a logistics team for a large retailer, good information was hard to come by. Every day we considered unreliable data about from weather, war, and sales forecasts.

Sometimes we got lucky; often we didn’t. Through experience though, we improved dramatically over time.

2. Make a proposal that only has a 50/50 chance of being accepted A sure thing is great, but it limits your range of possibilities. Rejection is a legitimate downside, but often it’s temporary. Sales teams know that it always takes a certain number of “no’s” to get to “yes.”

You can amp this one up by taking on a project that has a chance of failing, but where you and your team will develop rapidly. Maybe your team isn’t ready, and this project can help stretch them to become ready.

3. Generate and share a possible solution that may not work Leaders and teams often get stuck coming up with “the” solution. Take a shot at generating multiple possibilities, and have the courage to share them.

Share any off-the-wall ideas at your next meeting to solve the problem that everyone’s been talking about for months. See if this sparks an even better solution.

I’ve worked with many leaders who wonder why their team always comes to them with problems instead of solutions. Create a safe place for them to get their ideas on the table, and you’ll notice an immediate difference. Eventually, they’ll start taking charge of the solutions themselves.

4. Bring your personal side to work Leaders have a lot to keep up with. Sometimes, learning the personal details of your team members can feel overwhelming. I frequently see leaders who aren’t sure about the cities where their team members are located, much less the names of their spouses or children.

The gamble here is to share a bit more of your personal side with your team and ask a little more about them. A personal connection is ultimately the glue that holds the team together.

Try the “How was your weekend?” test. Share a little bit about your life outside of work, and then ask someone else the question.

5. Schedule a two-week vacation Is there really a bigger gamble than this for a leader? Getting this on the books shows confidence and trust in your team, sets an important example, and lets you re-energize. Here are some tips from a two-week trip to Italy that I took with my family.

If you can’t remember the last time you took a small gamble, maybe it’s time to do it now. You’ll discover that the more you practice, the better you get.

Note that small gambles as a leader may become addictive. Be prepared for them to yield big results!

It’s not about your itchy twitter finger or your golf game.

I’ll take the great Ernie Els’ word for it that you don’t need any golf tips from me.

After Els played a round with you at Trump National Golf Club in Florida earlier this year, he said you were “a proper golfer” who “swings the golf club properly and hits iron shots properly.”

My advice is purely political and it’s based on several decades of watching and working with my father.

If you want to achieve two of the most important goals of your new administration -- genuine healthcare reform and real tax reform -- you’ve got to understand and appreciate what my father knew instinctively: In presidential politics, perception is more important than reality.

I saw my father put that simple truth into practice back during an international crisis in 1985.

He and Nancy were planning to leave the White House in June to spend a few days at Rancho del Cielo, his ranch near Santa Barbara.

But on June 14 a group of Lebanese terrorists with guns and grenades hijacked a TWA flight from Athens to Rome and forced it to land in Beirut.

While the world watched the news reports, the plane flew around the Middle East

for three days.

The terrorists beat passengers and threatened to kill them unless the Israeli government released about 700 Shiite prisoners.

The hostages were released over the next two weeks, but an American, Navy diver Robert Stethem, was shot in the head and his body was dumped on the runway.

My father could have flown out to California as he planned. His ranch was the Western White House and it had the same set up as his office in Washington.

The reality was that he could go there, monitor the TWA hijacking situation and also relax by cutting brush or riding his horse.

But the perception to the world would have been that he had gone on vacation while an American plane was being hijacked and dozens of innocent people were at risk.

He decided it’d be better for him politically to stay in the White House and monitor the situation from there.

He understood reality vs. perception.

Mr. President, I offer this advice because of two things your administration has done wrong recently – not making the White House visitor logs available to the media and not showing the public your income tax returns.

The reality is that the law backs you up on both cases, but the perception is you are hiding something.

What’s worse, you are allowing the news media to keep pushing that perception out to the public.

The liberal media are going to be against everything you do from now until the end of your second term, but you don’t have to write their articles for them.

If you keep allowing bad publicity on the issues of the White House logs and your tax returns to get in the way of your agenda, you’re going to be hard-pressed to get tax reform or anything else you want through Congress.

If I were your chief of staff, I’d have told you it was horrible politics to shut off the White House logs to the public. If you must do it, do it later -- after you’ve passed health care reform or tax reform.

The reality is, you won’t get your tax policy through until people stop perceiving you are hiding something in your taxes. The only way that’ll happen is if you release them ASAP. It’s not about the law, Mr. President. It’s not about reality. It’s all about perception.

And that's something you can learn from my father – and from me.

Alexander City Middle School students conduct research for science fair

Nearly 40 science projects covering a wide range of topics were on display at Alexander City Middle School’s science fair this week.

The winning project was “Rock ‘n Rock Candy,” by eighth-graders Jordan Osborne and Emily Shaw.

Second place went to seventh-graders Holley Humphrey and Paige Forbus for their project, “How Arteries Affect a Heart’s Blood Flow” while “How do Chicks Breathe Inside their Shells?” submitted by eighth-graders Lexi Garrett and Lillian Parker took third.

“Submitting a project was mandatory for all of the honors classes, but students who weren’t in an honors class were invited to participate as well,” Sherry Brown, a seventh-grade science teacher and the departmental chair at ACMS, said.

She explained how the students were presented with several different categories to work from, but the specifics of their projects were left up to the students.

“It was all based on their interests and what they wanted to learn more about,” Brown said.

The multitude of interests was reflected in the variety of topics researched. They ranged from the different methods of making rock candy and blood flow throughout the body to ones regarding the eating habits of local wildlife.

“After hunting season was over, we had one student set out three different kinds of food: corn, a salt block and Skittles to see which one the animals went for the most. Interestingly, he found that the Skittles were the most eaten of the three,” Brown explained.

Once the students had come up with their project’s topic, they were reviewed before the teachers and students sat down and discussed the project. The students were required to follow the scientific method as they tested their hypotheses and collected their data.

After the research was completed and the final results interpreted, the science projects were put on display in the school library, where their research could be seen throughout the week by the rest of the student body.

Overall, the event was a success, as those participating got some valuable experience with the scientific method and conducting research while being able to do this on a topic that was interesting to them.

“It’s all about the students learning something,” Brown said. “Hopefully we’ll be able to have another one next year.”

“The students who wanted to be pals signed up to volunteer. They had to have a 3.0 GPA and zero office referrals,” Jeremy Phillips, a coach and special needs teacher at Benjamin Russell explained.

“They’re the athletes’ biggest fans and help them as necessary.”

Both the participants and the Wildcat Pals expressed what the day had meant to them.

Sophomore pal Tannor Beckett expressed how “It means a lot to me. It touches your heart and makes you realize not to take anything for granted.”

“It’s been great. I made a new friend and he’s done great today.

Unemployment March’s rate represents 2,080,139 employed persons, compared to 2,067,352 in February and 2,037,370 in March 2016.

“I am encouraged to hear that nearly 13,000 more Alabamians have a job today than did in February. As we work to improve Alabama’s image, these figures are welcomed news, but they are just a start.

I am honored that the first employment numbers announced during my administration are on the right side of the ledger,” said Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey.

Washington said the statewide drop was good news on two fronts.

“The month’s drop in the unemployment rate came about because more people entered the labor force look-

“We are also very close to reaching an employment milestone: a wage and salary employment figure of two million. We’re only 10,000 jobs away from reaching this goal, which hasn’t been met since June 2008 and has, in fact, only been achieved 13 times over the past ten years.”

Wage and salary employment increased in March by 8,500 to 1,990,000. Monthly gains were seen in the leisure and hospital-

ity sector (+3,200), the professional and business services sector (+2,400), and the trade, transportation, and utilities sector (+1,700), among others.

Over the year, wage and salary employment increased 28,500, with gains in the education and health services sector (+7,900), the manufacturing sector (+6,700), and the professional and business services sector (+6,000), among others.

“Every county experienced a drop in their unemployment rate over the month, and 66 of our 67 counties saw their rates stay the same or decrease over the year,” continued Washington. “All of the metropolitan statistical areas also saw their

rates drop this month.”

Counties with the lowest unemployment rates are: Shelby County at 4.0 percent, Elmore County at 4.4 percent, and Cullman County at 4.5 percent.

Counties with the highest unemployment rates are: Wilcox County at 13.8 percent, Clarke and Greene Counties at 9.6 percent, and Lowndes County at 9.3 percent.

Major cities with the lowest unemployment rates are: Vestavia Hills at 3.5 percent, Homewood at 3.7 percent, and Hoover at 3.8 percent. Major cities with the highest unemployment rates are: Selma and Prichard at 9.5 percent, Bessemer at 7.4 percent, and Anniston at 6.8 percent.

Budget cutbacks have meant that in recent years the Marine Unit has been forced to operate with a bare bones staff.

The district includes 32 counties and for nearly two years there were only six troopers to work the waterways in those 32 counties, which includes 14 bodies of water.

“We need to hire more troopers and marine police,” Taylor said. “We are looking to do that. The legislature has helped us with $3.3 million, which will allow us to hire 30 additional troopers and some of those will roll

Fair Caldwell said that this year’s fair would be like those held in previous years, with plenty of food vendors, chance games, and rides for all ages.

Like the other fundraisers the Kiwanis Club holds throughout the year, including the pancake breakfast and the skeet shoot, the fair helps raise money for other organizations the Kiwanis gives to.

“Every penny raised from the fair goes directly back to Alexander City. The money goes to things like

simple things, but you’d be surprised at the number of people who take a boat on the water without checking the first thing.”

As the season progresses, Fuller said the issues change as well.

“The most common and dangerous issue when boating in congested waters is an inexperienced operator,” said Fuller. “The inexperienced operator has a lot of concerns that he needs to adhere to. First and foremost, he should steer clear of other boats. By doing this he reduces the risk of a collision. By maintaining a safe distance he avoids creating a hazardous wake,

An open door policy at Alex City sports W

hen you’re in journalism school, you learn that the natural progression of a sports reporter is to start by covering high school sports, then move on to college before advancing to the dream job of covering a professional team.

But what they don’t tell you in journalism school is, there’s something magical about high school sports.

The kids are fresh, growing talents; the coaches are eager to have their players recognized; and the parents and fans are a unique, dedicated group.

If you ask me, I already do have the dream job.

Earlier this week, I took over as sports editor at the Alexander City Outlook and Dadeville Record, and I couldn’t tell you how happy I am to be here. In just a week, I’ve learned that this community is welcoming and ready for great sports coverage of our local high school teams. And that’s what I plan to bring.

I’ve also learned it’s quite a bit different than back home in Pennsylvania, so if I ask any stupid questions, bear with me. I’ll get the hang of it.

Lastly, I’ve already been introduced to the importance of high school football in the Deep South, and I couldn’t be more ready. There’s something enchanting about football fields to me, and driving by the Charles E. Bailey Sportplex in Alex City made me certain I had landed in the right place.

So now that I’ve learned a little about the community and the readers here, I want you to know a little bit more about me.

I’m an open book and an open door. I want to know everything about sports in this community.

Even if it seems like small tidbit of news, let me know; I’ll probably find it interesting. I’ve covered a variety of sports, from the usual suspects like football, softball and basketball to the more off-the-wall sports like disc golf, mountain biking and even squash. I’m always willing to learn about a new sport or up-and-coming interest in the area.

I also am extremely passionate about reaching student-athletes on their level. One of the things you’ll quickly learn about me is I’m very active on social media; you can find coverage and updates about area sports on Facebook and Twitter as well as Snapchat and Instagram.

I’m everywhere, and I want to know where you want me to be. If there’s some new, cool tool the kids are using I haven’t discovered, let me know. I’ll figure it out.

Possibly most importantly, one of the biggest things I’ll be striving to accomplish is not only covering the biggest stories coming out of the area, but also finding those lesserknown kids who have interesting stories to tell. I want to know about the kids coming off an injury, or the JV players who get a chance at a varsity game and shine, or the athletes who do something great off the field for their community.

Basically, if you know about it, tell me about it.

My intention is to provide readers with in-depth, well-rounded and complete coverage of high school, recreation and community sports. I can be reached by phone and email, or via social media, and if you see me out and about, feel free to introduce yourself.

I’ll be the Yankee saying “Y’all” just to try to fit in.

Rebels take sweep of Samson to advance in state baseball playoffs

All through the lineup, Reeltown’s bats were hot on Friday night.

Every Rebel starter got at least one hit in the doubleheader, and it led to a sweep of Samson in the first round of the AHSAA Class 2A baseball playoffs.

“We’ve had two or three guys that would hit like that, but not everybody on the same page,” Reeltown coach Mike Jones said. “Really, tonight we had seven or eight guys all doing the right thing at the right time.”

The Rebels had 10 hits in both games, and came away with 7-2 and 11-1 victories over the Tigers.

Shep Flurry led the offense with four total hits. He went 3-for-3 in the second game and drew a total of three walks. Joby Newman and Cal Burton each had a pair of hits in the opener, and Trent Thrash sliced a pair of singles in the nightcap.

“I feel like I could’ve done better,” Thrash admitted. “I’ve never hit the ball to rightfield before, though, and tonight I did. My teammates hit the ball

real well.”

Jones said, “We’ve been working real hard to hit the ball the other way. When we start hitting the ball to rightfield real hard, they’re just going to start flipping to leftfield ‘cause they’re going to start pitching us in. We knew we had the potential to hit like that.”

Defensive prowess was also on display, especially in the opener, for Reeltown. The Tigers managed just six hits all night, and Reeltown’s starting pitchers, Cade Giddens and Joby Newman, respectively, were backed up well by their defense.

Catcher Cole Flurry had a pair of highlight-worthy plays, one of which was a pickoff at third base and another was a popup catch just along the backstop fence.

“We just work hard every day on defense,” Flurry said.

“Coach pushes us to the limit to get things done, and I’m always full-throttle wide open.

I was looking for the fence, but I was trying to keep the ball away from the fence, too. (Our pitchers) were excellent. Cade Giddens came out and blew See REBELS • Page B2

Wildcat golfers take win in four-team meet

Benjamin Russell golfer Dylan Moncus shot a 1-undrer 35 to lead the Wildcats to a win in a four-team match Thursday.

Benjamin Russell’s golf teams had a strong showing at Sylacauga on Thursday afternoon in a nine-hole meet.

The boys won the event, finishing with 148, compared to Vestavia’s 159, Sylacauga’s 162 and Springville’s 186.

On the girls side, the Wildcats split. Sylacauga defeated BRHS, 132-159, but the Wildcats earned a 159-194 win over Springville.

The boys were led by Dylan Moncus with a one-under 35.

Sawyer Scott and Matthew Cush each carded 37s, while Hal Coker and Sawyer Parkers followed closely behind with 39s. Rounding out the rest of the Wildcats were Trey Shockley (40), Kylee Reeder (42), Saxon Coker (43) and Kyle Mattox (45).

For the girls, Karlie Royster was the top golfer with a score of 52. Mally McKinnis turned in a 53, and Keegan Wendling and Logan Johnson followed with 54s and 55s.

Finlay Radney also played for

the girls.

Both BRHS teams are now preparing for sectionals. The girls head to Indian Pines Golf Course (Auburn) on May 1, and the boys play at Auburn’s AU Club on May 2.

SOFTBALL Reeltown’s bats come alive in win vs. LaFayette

It was a hitting festival for Reeltown’s softball team on Thursday afternoon, as the Rebels crushed LaFayette, 27-0 in three innings.

Paige Kind allowed just one hit and struck out seven in the complete-game victory, but it was the offense that was really unstoppable for Reeltown (197).

Kelsey Jaye, Morgan McGuire and Kayli Hornsby had three hits apiece, and Hornsby smacked two doubles. Makenzie Baker and King each had a pair of hits, and Kyndel Lee smashed a three-run homer. Cole Flurry kept it going by reaching on an error, and Hayden Solomon drove him in with an RBI triple. Shep Flurry then drove in Solomon with a double of his own to keep the game out of reach for good.

With the victory, Reeltown advances to face either J.U. Blacksher or Goshen. The Rebels will be on the road next Friday for another best-of-three series.

Benjamin Russell’s soccer team had a fine effort on Friday night, taking a pair of shutout victories on Friday.

The boys team earned a dominating, 10-0 victory over Valley, while the girls gutted out a 1-0 win against Sylacauga.

Daly Wagoner was once again the hero for BRHS, netting a tally with 18 minutes remaining in the game.

“Again, we possessed the ball the majority of the game and created scoring chances,” Wildcat girls coach Lee Wagoner said, “but didn’t capitalize by putting them in the back of the net.”

BOYS TENNIS BRHS struggles at sectional tournament

With such a young team, Benjamin Russell knew it would be in for a tough battle at the boys tennis sectional tournament.

The Wildcats were led by their No. 2 doubles team, which won their first round match against Dothan, but they were otherwise whitewashed.

The No. 1 doubles team of Cambron Bice and Brooks Tauton put up a nice fight, but were ousted

by Dothan, 10-6. On the singles side, No. 2 Dylan Jackson won four games before falling to his Northview counterpart.

BRHS to host alumni basketball game

Some of the area’s most successful athletes will be descending on Benjamin Russell High School next Saturday for the first annual alumni basketball game.

The game will pit the Wildcat alumni against Central Coosa alumni, and will be held at the BRHS gym on Saturday, April 29. Doors open at 2 p.m. with the women’s game starting at 3 followed by the men’s game at 4:30.

Some of the top talent in attendance will be Derrick Russell (BRHS), Jamario Moon (Central Coosa), Scottie Vines (BRHS), Justin Tuck (Central Coosa), Terrell Owens (BRHS) and Adalius Thomas (Central Coosa).

AUTISM WALK: Join us in supporting Autism awareness and having fun doing it. The Alexander City Autism Walk will be April 22 at Alexander City Middle School (359 State St., Alexander City, Al 35010).

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. A $30 donation covers registration with a T-shirt included and proceeds going to raise money for Autism research.

The walk begins at 9 a.m. and is free for all. There will be a bouncy house, games, snow cones, train rides and a few special guests.
