Senator Doug Jones reached out to news outlets in small towns and rural areas across Alabama Thursday morning to talk about the opioid epidemic raging across the United States. “Alabama has been at the heart of the opioid epidemic,” Jones said. “This issue has led to awful consequences.

County jobless rate falls to 4.1 percent STAFF REPORT TPI Staff

Tallapoosa County’s unemployment rate dropped in March, falling to 4.1 percent. The county’s March rate was down from the 4.3 percent jobless rate recorded in February and substantially lower that the 4.7 percent unemployment rate the county posted in March 2017. Stats released Friday showed only 727 people in the county listed as unemployed. In March 2017, there were 864 residents listed as unemployed in Tallapoosa County. County students enjoy second-annual special needs prom By DONALD CAMPBELL Staff Writer

The interior of the Dadeville Recreation Center looked more like a frontier town Friday, as the Tallapoosa County School System held its second-annual special needs prom, letting special needs students have a fun-filled day with a Wild Wild West theme. Close to 350 students and their parents filled the building, enjoying the music and

the day dedicated to them. “We wanted to do something special for all of the students in the county system with special needs,” event organizer Terresa Gaither said. “We have students from the high schools, the elementary schools and even some of our homebound students here today.” Decorations depicting a town from the See PROM • Page 10

A 27-year-old Kellyton man has been arrested on allegations Moncrief that he propositioned a young girl over the internet and shared a sexually explicit photo over social media. According to a release from Tallapoosa County Sheriff Jimmy Abbett, the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department Criminal Investigative Unit and a member of the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) conducted an investigation regarding the transmission of sexually explicit photograph of a 14-yearold female and electronic solicitation of a minor. Alexander City Kiwanis Club Fair returning Tuesday By CLIFF WILLIAMS Staff Writer

The annual Alexander City Kiwanis Club Fair will return next week. “We are happy to bring back good family entertainment,” Kiwanian Cam Caldwell said. “It will be Tuesday, April 24 through Saturday, April 28.” Caldwell said that this year’s fair would be like those held in previous years, with plenty of food vendors, chance games, and rides for all ages. And there is a bargain to be had by going on a weeknight. “There are coupons for the unlimited ride bands,” Caldwell said. “There are coupons all over town for $5

off for weekday purchases.” Primetime Amusements is bringing the fair to town and will have rides like the Frenzy, Hurricane, Ring of Fire and the Kite Flyer. They will also have food items like gourmet funnel cakes for $6, cotton candy for $5, candied apples for $4, fresh-squeezed lemonade, fresh-cut French fries and handmade corn dogs. Tickets for rides are $1 each and 45 tickets are available for $35.
