DEAR ABBY: My mother-inlaw recently moved close to us.

She has a nice home and has lots of friends in the area, but she doesn’t want any of them to come visit.

Abby, her entire focus is on us! She walks right into our home, although she has been asked several times not to.

She goes through my things and takes whatever she wants without asking. I can never relax unless my husband isn’t home and I have locked the doors so she can’t barge in. When he is here, she comes over, walks in, and if we have company, thinks she should join our guests.

I recently retired, and I get anxious because I want it peaceful, but with her invading our privacy, it’s anything but. I have grown children I adore, but I don’t want them walking in either, and they never would. It took me years to have a home life with my husband because he was a longtime bachelor, and for years his buddies would drop by unannounced. Now it’s his mother!

Obituaries Mr. George William “Bill” Hardy 1920 - 2017 George William “Bill” Hardy, 97, passed away on April 13, 2017. He was born February 12, 1920 on his grandfather’s farm on Youngs Ferry Road, in Tallapoosa County. He was the son of Otis Darrell Hardy and Glennie Brownell (Horton) Hardy. In 1926, when Lake Martin was created, the Hardy family dismantled their homes and rebuilt in Alex City on Church Street. As a young boy he worked in his father’s grocery store as a delivery boy and assistant butcher. After graduating from Alexander City High School in 1938, his athletic abilities landed him a football scholarship to Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC, where he was known as “the jewel of the Smokies”. After two years WWII interrupted his college education and Bill served 4 years in the U.S. Army Air Corp based in Denver, CO. He enlisted as a flight engineer and was an instructor of mechanics for the B-29 bomber. It was in Denver that he met the love of his life, Mary Ann Kiser. After the military, Bill and Mary Ann married and he enrolled and graduated with a business degree from Western State College in Gunnison, CO. In 1947, they returned to Alexander City where he accepted a position at Russell Corporation. For the next 38 years he rose

through the ranks from Mill #1 to his final position as President of Russell Athletic.

In 1985 he was named one of the 10 Most Influential People in the Sporting Goods industry. After his retirement, in 1993 Bill was inducted into the Sporting Goods Hall of Fame for his contributions to the industry including the development of the “tear away” jersey, Russ-Cote, which was used in silk screen printing, and his leadership in setting standards for shades of colors used in athletic apparel throughout the sporting goods industry.

Not only a legend in his profession, Hardy (a.k.a. “Ole Smoothie”) was widely known for his gifted golf swing. As a charter member of Willow Point Country Club, he was a two time Men’s Club Champion (’66 and ’70) and had 4 holes in one. He most notably shot a 67 at age 74.

He always joked that “it’s easier to shoot your age the older you get”. He was also one of the founders of the Willow Point Everyday Club which is still in existence. He loved to collect putters, and for his 80th birthday, instead of getting gifts, he gave his putters away to his beloved golfing buddies. His love of golf extended beyond his personal game. In 2001 when the Central Alabama Community College (CACC) champion golf team was cancelled due to proration, Hardy worked diligently on the steering committee that reinstated the program the following year.

Aside from all his accolades, Hardy’s legacy was his amazing ability to “never meet a stranger.”

He sincerely loved getting to know others and always looked for the good in everyone. Spending time with his family and friends especially at his Wicker Point cabin, reminiscing, telling stories, and entertaining with his famous jokes was a favorite pastime (when not on the golf course). He was, as many have said, a true gentleman that everyone loved.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Mary Ann (Kiser) Hardy, parents Otis D. and Glennie Brownell Hardy, sister Mac Ruth Hardy Beers, brother Otis “Bubba” Hardy. He leaves his daughter Dana (Will) Ferniany of Birmingham, son George of Alexander City, daughter Mollie (Bill) Barrett of Alexander City and 6 grandchildren, Dylan Ferniany of Birmingham, Glennie Ferniany of Montgomery, Hardy Barrett and Hannah Barrett of Birmingham, Lindsey Hardy of San Diego, and Lillie Hardy of Portland, OR. Visitation will be Monday April 17, 2017 from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church.

Hugh Anderson Neighbors 1926 - 2017 Hugh Anderson Neighbors, Jr., 90, peacefully passed away Thursday, April 13, 2017.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh Anderson Neighbors and Ora Swann Neighbors as well as a grandson, Richard Hart Neighbors.

Hugh was born August 15, 1926 while living in Goodwater, Alabama. At age two the family moved to Birmingham, Alabama.

He attended Lakeview Elementary and Cahaba Valley School before graduating from Phillips High School. During his senior year at Phillips he was appointed a Lt. Colonel in the ROTC program and was elected President of his senior class. Upon graduation he attended BirminghamSouthern College and enlisted in the United States Navy on his 18th birthday. Hugh served as a medical corpsman in the South Pacific Theatre during the last years of World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946.

Hugh returned to Birmingham-Southern College and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order where he was named Number One his senior year. He received his B.S. degree in 1949 and worked one year at TCI Steel (US Steel) before joining his father in the family

Hugh loved Alexander City and was active in many civic affairs. He served on the Alexander Neighbors City Board of Education, President of the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Industrial Development Board, and the Board of Directors of the Alexander City Bank (SouthTrust Bank). He was active in the Kiwanis Club for many years.

He helped found the Beautification Board along with the Tree Board in Alex City and established several miles of greenway called the Green Gateway entering the city.

In addition to his civic involvement, he was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Alexander City. He was aSunday School teacher, Chairman of the Administrative Board, Roanoke District Lay Leader, Board member of the Methodist Superannuate Homes, Chairman of the Methodist Foundation, and the Board of Camp Sumatanga. Hugh was a faithful believer in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Hugh is survived by his wife, Ann Smallman Neighbors, a son, Hugh Anderson Neighbors, III (Sarah), two daughters Ann Smallman Neighbors and Jane Neighbors Brakefield (Chris). His grandchildren are Hugh Anderson Neighbors, IV (Allene) of Birmingham, Katherine Swann Neighbors of Nashville, TN, Elizabeth Neighbors Lamberth (Nolen) of Auburn, Lindsey Ann Brakefield of Birmingham.

His great-grandchildren are Hugh Anderson Neighbors V, Carleton Leighton Neighbors, Elizabeth McColl Lamberth, Sarah Hart Lamberth, and Lewis Nolen Lamberth, Jr. There will be a celebration of Hugh’s life at First United Methodist Church, 310 Green Street, Alexander City, AL 35010 on Monday, April 17. Retired Russell Athletic President George William “Bill” Hardy passed away Thursday.

Ben Russell remembers the Tallapoosa County native as great business person and most importantly as a great person.

“He was a great friend of mine even though we were a generation apart,” Russell

said. “We worked with and around Billy for most of his career.

“There are very few other people that made Russell Corporation what it was than Billy. To a great degree he created Russell Athletic. He was well liked by everyone and everybody looked up to Billy. He was not only one of the great reasons for the success of Russell Corporation but for that of all of Alexander City.”

Tax deadline falls on April 18

This Saturday marks the annual deadline for all Americans to file their income taxes for the previous year. However, since the 15th falls outside the normal business week, the IRS allows for citizens to file until Tuesday, April 18. For the residents of Alexander City and Tallapoosa County, there are plenty of places available where they can file.

The Alexander City City Council will meet Monday night with agenda items that includes appointing a person to the school board, resolutions to rid the city of several dilapidated structures and a move to bring fire department and EMS billing back in house.

Thursday the council interviewed four Alexander City Board of Education candidates.

Current school board member Kelly Waldrop, Glenda Bland, Jeffrey Hines and Vantrice Heard all applied and handled themselves well through a battery of questions from council members.

The appointee will serve a five-year term on the school board.

“We had four good, strong candidates,” said Councilman Tim Funderburk. “We appreciate their desire and willingness to serve.”

The Alexander City Police Department’s Animal Control, along with many other animal control departments around the country, celebrated National Animal Control Appreciation Week this week. Here in town, Animal Control Supervisor Sgt. Ken Vernon and Officer Scott Wright respond to the various calls that come in to their department.

Though each situation may present a different set of circumstances, the pair do have a standard protocol they follow when dealing with incoming calls.

“We’ll get as much information as possible from the dispatcher,

including what kind of animal is being reported and where the report is coming from. As we start getting close to the site of the report, we start looking for the animal in question,” Vernon said.

“Once we get out and approach the animal, its demeanor can change.

After we see its reaction, we can better figure out what equipment we’ll need.”

Easter is a time to celebrate rebirth

E

aster is a time renewal, a reminder of life restored. The natural sense of the coming of spring mingles for the day with the Christian promise of eternal life, through Jesus’ death and resurrection.

Christianity was born in persecution. Jesus spoke the truth to the religious leaders of the day, and they conspired with civil officials to kill him.

Christians suffered persecution at the hands of the Romans, pagan barbarians and Muslim invaders over the centuries. Great Christian civilizations like the Byzantine Empire were wiped from the map. Today, Christians die for their beliefs at the hands of the Islamic State’s Muslim fanatics.

Real religious persecution is hard for us to truly comprehend in this country. Christians battle with secular humanists and each other over social issues of the day — abortion, capital punishment, same-sex marriage — and the passion on both sides of each issue is real. In the West, with its promise of religious liberty, Christianity’s greatest enemy is apathy, and a growing indifference to spirituality.

This weekend, about 2 billion Christians will celebrate the most important event on the church calendar. Christmas — the celebration of the birth of Jesus — might attract the most attention in the secular world because of its great commercial importance. But Easter is essential to Christianity’s very meaning.

For Christians, there is no Christianity without Jesus’ resurrection. It promises victory over death.

It promises eternal life. It promises salvation. And Christians believe that it is granted freely to all who seek it.

Easter’s celebration again brings hope to Christians around the globe.

Now, as they have through the centuries, many will take comfort in that hope in a world that seems to be growing increasingly dangerous and chaotic.

And on Easter, we mark the cycle of life and death and life again, knowing that joy and pain are its inevitable shoots. We endure and we rejoice, and we remember once more that we can renew and begin again.

Chicks aren’t good pets and other news

I

t has been a very busy time for us in the newsroom the last few weeks.

We’ve had a plane crash, court hearings, series of shots being fired in neighborhoods and several meetings of councils and boards. If you throw in the craziness involving the ousting of Robert Bentley in Montgomery – it’s easy to see why we have been running wide open.

With that in mind, I have a lot of things in my notebook that I just haven’t been able to get into the paper. So today is your lucky day. Here are some random items that have been on my desk and cluttering my head. Enjoy.

HERE CHICKY, CHICKY: In my travels this week, I encountered baby chicks at the post office, Abernathy’s and at Tractor Supply. Seeing the fuzzy little birds took me back to my childhood when you would see chicks at the local hardware store that had been colored for Easter.

I know that couldn’t have been a good thing for the birds, but it didn’t stop us all from getting some of the cute little boogers for our own kids.

One year we got our two daughters a baby duck each for Easter. They were excited when they woke up and saw what the Easter Bunny had left. But after about a week or so, they grew right out of that cuteness and we were faced with some growing, quacking, mess-making ducks who were big enough to let you

know they didn’t like being carried around like baby dolls. But a small kiddie pool in the backyard worked until they were big enough that the superintendent at a local park said they could be left in a pond there. We were able to visit regularly and took a bag of feed back from time to time.

All this rambling is my own little public service announcement to remind you all that chickens are farm animals and while they may be cute while they are little, they really aren’t good Easter gifts. I learned that the hard way. Duck doo is not easy to get out of an heirloom Persian rug. Just saying…

TREE TALK: Some residents have been raising a ruckus about tree that was cut down near the firehouse downtown recently. It is the tree that was out front that the firefighters put lights in every year at Christmas.

While some people were a bit upset, the truth is that the tree was really a bush that had grown way beyond its intended purpose and had countless dead spots and was on its way to being dead.

The bush was dropping limbs regularly and actually presented a bit of a hazard.

Before the decision was made, the folks at MainStreet hired a tree consultant to make sure the proper action was taken.

But rest assured, a new tree is coming to the area, according to Alexander City Fire Chief Reese McAlister.

We all love our greenery, but sometime things can’t be avoided.

IVEY TALK: I must say I have been impressed with the night and day difference between Gov. Kay Ivey and the joke that Robert Bentley was living when he was still in the Governor’s Mansion.

She wasted no time to get rid of some dead wood that Bentley kept propping up.

One of the best lines I have heard about the new era was this: “All it took was getting a woman in the Governor’s office to clean house.” Great job Gov. Ivey. We are all about honesty, fairness, openness, transparency and “draining the swamp.”

It’s time to call for recall in Alabama

L

ooking back on the last few days of Governor Bentley’s s now-infamous administration, I can’t help but think, “It never should have gotten this far.”

But it did. At least part of that should be credited to the fact he knew there wasn’t anything the people of Alabama could do to him politically once he won his second term in office.

Bentley’s pride was unflagging even during his farewell speech.

As a result, Alabamians’ already-damaged trust in state government took a nosedive over the last year.

Recall is a simple idea.

An elected official behaves in such a manner that he or she can no longer uphold the requirements of the office. A group of voters initiate a petition to get that official’s name on a special-election ballot to be “recalled” from office.

If enough signatures are collected, voters head to the polls and either vote “yes” or “no” to having the official removed from his or her post. If you’re looking for a recall law in Alabama, look no further than Dothan (Ala. Code § 11-44E-168). Literally, look no further. The citizens of Dothan can recall their officials. Nobody else in the

state can.

Representative Will Ainsworth attempted to remedy this problem last year with HB 501, which would have established a recall process in Alabama.

It passed out of House committee but never received a floor vote in the House.

Imagine that – legislators won’t bring a bill to the floor that would provide a mechanism to hold them accountable to voters throughout their terms. Most recall legislation, including the legislation that was proposed in Alabama last session, requires a high threshold to initiate the recall process, an even higher voter threshold to have the official recalled, and oversight throughout by the Secretary of State. Rest assured, this is not something that can happen on a whim.

Of the 19 states that do have recall provisions, most of them allow for recall of any elected official – including state legislators

– only making an exception for members of the judiciary. Alabama doesn’t necessarily have to go that far.

At the very least, Alabama should have a provision that allows voters to recall an official who was elected statewide (governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, etc.).

Bentley has demonstrated, single-handedly, why we need a recall process.

Do any of us really want to go through another season of watching a politician unable to serve because of a personal scandal? When Alabamians put our trust in an elected official, we need to have accountability tools available more often than every four years. We can talk about the negative impacts of Bentley’s yearlong distraction, or we can insist on being able to do something about it in the future.

as her son, a student at Dadeville High School, is autistic.

“I approached Mr. Hand (Dadeville High’s principal) about putting on the event,” Duck explained. “I wanted to bring a greater awareness to the school.”

The first year this event was held, it was in the high school gym, according to Duck. It has had such a positive response and grown so tremendously since then that it has been moved to the auditorium in order to hold everyone attending.

“I’m impressed with how the school has taken a leadership role in learning about the condition,” said President of the LCARA Board of Directors Maria Gutierrez. “We need more schools doing this sort of thing.”

During Thursday’s rally, the Dadeville High cheerleaders led the attendees in a couple of cheers regarding autism awareness, and awareness posters made by several of the students were showcased, before the audience judged which one they felt was best.

To better demonstrate what it can be like to have ASD, one of the teachers was called up and told to walk in a straight line while wearing safety goggles that had been smudged with Vaseline, looking through binoculars, having a student shine a flashlight at her eyes, and another student walking alongside her,

asking her a series of questions.

During another demonstration, a member of the student body was called up onto the stage. While wearing the smudged safety goggles, as well as a pair of work gloves, he was asked to complete an elementary school-level math worksheet. As he attempted to solve the problems, a flashlight was aimed at his eyes, a container of dryer sheets was waved under his nose, and those in the auditorium were asked to make all sorts of noise, like stomping their feet and clapping their hands.

In the future, both Duck and Gutierrez expressed their hope that this event would not only continue to grow, but other schools would begin hosting events like this to continue raising awareness about ASD. “We want to reach out to other schools, starting here and expanding to other counties,” Duck explained.

“Bringing awareness into the school is important, so that they can be more supportive and inclusive, not just in their schools, but in their communities as well,” Gutierrez added.

“We can take the dog to the shelter, or if we know who it belongs to, we’ll return it to its owner, giving them a warning if necessary,” Wright said, while Vernon mentioned that they can also issue a court summons to the dog’s owner if the situation requires.

The most common call received by animal control is a dog running at large, Vernon said, but the number of calls coming in varies from day to day.

“Some days, we may only get five calls, and some days, we may get 35. We never know the number or type of calls we receive every day,” said Vernon.

“Winter is generally the slow time for us,” Wright added.

While the majority of calls coming in to animal control deal with domestics, or wild animals like raccoons, Vernon and Wright have also encountered some truly unusual creatures while serving in the department.

“I think the top of the list for me would have to be the bear,” said Wright. Responding to a call on Elkahatchee Road, the officers had to deal with an adolescent black bear searching for food in garbage cans.

Vernon described how he and a handful of officers had to work together to subdue a 10-foot long alligator on

Pearson Chapel Road, or the encounter he had with an emu on Campground Road.

“We were driving along at around 30 miles an hour.

We came up alongside it to try and guide it off the road. It turned and looked at us, nodded as if it was acknowledging our being there, and then just kept going,” he said.

Both Vernon and Wright mentioned that this is a harder job than the public might think it is.

“We generally receive more calls than the police department,” Wright said.

“It’s not all just puppies and kittens. It can be 80 pound bulldogs or big snakes, and you have to deal with mad people too,” Vernon said.

While it may be a difficult job at times, they both stressed the care they use when dealing with the animals.

“We really do care about the animals. We do our best not to injure it. We’re not killers, like some people think we are,” Vernon said. “We don’t kill an animal unless it’s terribly sick or badly injured and there is no other alternative.”

No matter what kind of creature they’re dealing with, Vernon and Wright do their jobs effectively and humanely.

“Since the animals can’t speak, we speak for them,” Wright said.

Council identified and marked for demolition under a Community Development Block Grant. The council will consider action on those properties Monday night.

Cummins, between their location in Alexander City and a new location in Rockford, their 34 certified volunteers have put in nearly 3,000 hours helping the public file taxes.

While the tax service at Volunteer Connections will be open from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. on both Thursday and Monday, Cummins stressed that those filing need to arrive no later than 5 p.m. either day. Wait times will be based on how many people have shown up to get their taxes done at this time. Depending on the wait times, she also explained that they may have to tell people that no more tax filings can be taken and submitted, and that an extension will have to be filed with the IRS. If they need to file an extension, the volunteer filers will be able to assist with this as well.

One of the key reasons the people at Volunteer Connections do so much to help the seniors and lower income residents of the area is that “We want to make sure they get every credit they can. Every little bit helps,” Cummins said.

In addition, this service also helps those who may not have access to a computer submit their taxes, as e-filing is the fastest way to send taxes in.

H&R Block has long been a trusted name when it comes to filing income taxes. The office in Alexander City is no exception to this. Offering appointments, walk-ins, and drop-offs to all clients, they can also assist those who filed their taxes elsewhere with a free second look, to make sure they are getting every credit and deduction

they can claim.

“Last year, around 41 million people waited until April to file their taxes. The IRS estimates that number could be as high as 45 million this year,” said Amber Bailey, a tax specialist with H&R Block.

Waiting until the deadline to file can cause some serious issues.

“Filing status is a common mistake people who wait until now make on their returns. Another is overlooking credits and deductions they might qualify for,” Bailey said.

Bailey explained that the penalty for not filing taxes could range as high as 25 percent of one’s overall tax bill, depending on the situation.

“Whether it’s your taxes or an extension, go ahead and file something,” she said.

Bailey said that the method of paying taxes can be somewhat flexible.

Whether it’s paying with a credit card or using an installment plan, “If you work with the IRS, they’ll work with you,” she said.

In order to ensure they will be able to help as many clients as possible, Bailey said that the Alexander City H&R Block office will be offering extended hours until the 18th, opening from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m.

For those who want to help prepare taxes next year at Volunteer Connections, they will begin planning for next year’s tax season, including recruiting volunteers, in June and July.

Anyone interested in doing so can call Volunteer Connections, Cummins said.

Horseshoe Bend blanks Verbena 11-0 in shortened game

Despite starting slow, the Horseshoe Bend High School Softball team came out swinging in the third inning as the Generals defeated Verbena 11-1 in four and half innings.

Horseshoe Bend batters were a little slow to making contact in the game.

“We started kinda slow,” Coach David Caldwell said.

“Sometimes you just have to see the pitching one time around to get the speed and movement of what you are seeing.”

Three Lady Generals had multiple hits, and Danielle Mitchell started a big six run outburst in the third inning for Horseshoe Bend.

Caldwell took a little bit between before the Generals half of the third at the plate to coach his team up.

“We told them to start letting it get a little deeper,” Caldwell said.

“We started hitting the ball. I don’t know, we had a lot of hits in that

one inning.”

Though pitching a shut out, General pitcher Kynsley Blasingame struggled a little in the circle – by her standards.

“She wasn’t herself today,” Caldwell said.

“She fought through it.

She didn’t throw as well as she has been. She has thrown a lot so she is entitled to have a subpar game. She would tell you that it was subpar.”

Blasingame who will play at Troy University next has been the glue in the circle for the Generals all year.

“She has carried us all season,” Caldwell said.

“I don’t know what her record is, but it is good.”

Another key for Horseshoe Bend was aggressiveness on the base paths. The Lady Generals had five steals and three Verbena errors.

Now the season goes down the stretch as jockeying for playoff position begins.

Next week, the Generals host Reeltown Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. and Coosa Central Thursday at 1 p.m.K

Lady Rebel softball rolls over Elmore County, BRHS soccer on a roll STAFF REPORT TPI Staff

A day after losing a see-saw affair to Benjamin Russell, the Reeltown Lady Rebels broke out the bats in a big way to roll to a 13-0 win over Elmore County Thursday.

Reeltown scored one in the first, five in the second and third and added a single run in the fourth in the game that ended after five due to the run rule.

The Lady Rebels set the tone in the first, scoring on a passed ball and a single by Ayriana Stoneback in the first inning.

Reeltown scored five runs in the third inning. Reeltown’s big inning was driven by a single by Sierra Baker, a single

by Stoneback and two costly Elmore County errors.

One bright spot for Elmore County Lady Panthers Varsity Softball was a single by Juaneka Patterson in the first inning.

Stoneback was the winner in the circle for the Lady Rebels.

She went all five innings, gave

up just five hits and struck out four. She didn’t have a single walk in the game.

Maci Curlee took the loss for Elmore County Lady Panthers Varsity Softball. She pitched three innings, surrendering 12 runs, nine hits, and striking out two.

Akerria Harden led Elmore County Lady Panthers Varsity Softball with two hits in two at bats.

Reeltown had 10 hits in the game. Kayli Hornsby and Stoneback had three RBI each and Carlee Meadows, Morgan McGuire and Bakeralso drove in runs for Reeltown. The win boosts Reeltown’s season record to 16-6 with a key matchup with Rival Horseshoe Bend set for Tuesday.

Wildcat Soccer has 5 game winning streak

The BRHS boys soccer is guaranteed at least a share of the area championship with its 2-1 win over Opelika Thursday night and had a win over Alabama Christian Academy 5 – 0 earlier in the week.

The Alexander City Middle School soccer team placed first in the Rising Stars Tournament at Montgomery Catholic Prepatory School April 7 and April 8. The team has a 13-2 record as they went into a game Friday night with Thompson. “It has been an absolutely a successful season,” said Head Coach Jamie Linderman.
