By MITCH SNEED Editor
Alexander City Schools have room for improvement, expect more, but are accomplishing great things consistently. That’s the message conveyed by three system leaders at the Lake Martin Young Professionals Access to the Issues forum on schools Monday night at Valley National Bank. Superintendent Dr. Darrell Cooper, Jim
Pearson Principal Jamie Forbus and Benjamin Russell Principal Anthony Wilkinson touched on a wide range of topics with about 40 residents, including a recent letter grade on the legislature mandated Alabama Department of Education’s Alabama State Report Card. An Alexander City man was robbed at gunpoint Monday night after giving a man he didn’t know a ride. Alexander City Deputy Police Chief James Easterwood said that a man called police and reported that two men came to his car with a gun as it was parked on Alexander City Housing Authority property in the Spring Hill community and robbed him of an undisclosed amount of cash. “Apparently, he had given a guy a ride who was walking down the road,” Easterwood said. “He said he didn’t know the guy, but when he got to the location, he said the guy disappeared and two others came to the car and robbed him.” Easterwood said the victim said the men had a handgun and demanded his cash. As soon as he complied, they men fled and he left the area and called police. “We are working the case and have developed some potential suspects,” Easterwood said. “That’s about all that we can release at this time. There were no injuries, but we do have some things that we are checking on in connection with this case.”

Alexander City Chamber of Commerce President Ed Collari was touting its success Tuesday as Kenneth Boswell, director of Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs stopped by with some of his staff to tour the center. “We are further along than we thought we would be,” Collari said. “We opened this in February last year. We use this for the Chamber and as incubator. We have eight tenants.” Collari highlighted the accomplishments of one tenant. “We have been blessed,” Collari said. “Our first tenant, Beyond Home Care, started off with just her. She is now up to 34 employees.” Collari said the center was already in the black. See INNOVATION • Page 2
