Goldvil e murder trial continues due to new evidence By MITCH SNEED Editor
The trial for a man accused of the 2015 murders of a brother and sister he shared a mobile home with in the Goldville community has been continued. Dean Carl Stevens, 53, is facing two counts of capital murder in the shooting deaths of Dianna Mitchell Sharpe, Stevens 48, and Robert Wayne Mitchell after being indicted by a Tallapoosa County Grand Jury in Aug. 2016. With the trial set to begin Monday, a supplemental forensic report that was received by the prosecution recently and shared last week with the defense, led to the motion for a continuance. The motion was granted by Judge Steven Perryman. The brother and sister were shot to death in the mobile home they shared on Pate Road in Goldville on Oct. 8, 2015. Authorities said shortly after the shootings, that Stevens, who was Sharpe’s boyfriend, allegedly admitted to shooting the two after surrendering to New Site Police. Stevens was previously found competent to stand trial after a court-ordered mental evaluation. “We only got it recently ourselves and did turn it over to the defense, District Attorney Jeremy Duerr said. “But there was concern, and rightfully so, that the defense had not been given enough time to prepare for trial in light of the new evidence. No definite date was reset for the trial on Monday, but the next trial term in Alexander City is in the fall, most likely in late September or early October.

National Guard unit fills local streets It was a sea of soldiers on streets in and around Alexander City as the 214th Military Police Unit of the Alabama National Guard took to the pavement for a road march Sunday morning.
The Tallapoosa County Commissioners approved two moves involving grants that could give added safety tools to area residents. The commissioners voted unanimously to approve seeking bids for special side imaging sonar equipment that would be used in water rescue in recovery missions. The equipment, which is just like the equipment used by the Daphne Search and Rescue Unit, that helped locate a swimmer who drowned in the lake last summer. The body of 44-year-old Thomas Heulan Spence of LaGrange, Georgia was recovered from Lake Martin on Aug. 28, 2017 after a weeklong search. Officials credited the sonar See SONAR • Page 3
