THE BAHAMAS NEEDS YOUR TOURIST DOLLARS After Hurricane Dorian tore a path of destruction through the Atlantic, images and stories began to emerge from the Abacos and other Bahamian islands that had been devastated by the Category 5 storm. As these islands begin the slow work of rebuilding, other Bahamian islands remain untouched and open for business. Altogether, the 30 inhabited islands stretch from near Florida to near Cuba, and the southern islands of the Bahamas are generally in good shape post-Dorian, with airports, hotels and cruise terminals still ready to receive visitors. This is good news, as about 60% of the country’s revenue comes directly and indirectly from tourism. As relief and recovery efforts continue in Grand Bahama and Abaco, Bahamas officials stressed that nearly the entirety of the country’s 700-island tourism economy was open for business. Indeed, every airport in The Bahamas with the exception of those in Abaco and Grand Bahama have already reopened for commercial and private flights. “All other airports throughout The Bahamas are open and operational,” the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism said in a recent statement.
“Now is the time to come together for our brothers and sisters in need, and help our country get back on its feet,” said Bahamas Tourism Minister Dionisio D’Aguilar. “We also implore travelers to continue visiting the Bahamian islands that were not impacted by Hurricane Dorian as this will help our people tremendously.”
And as travelers return, the Bahamas is urging everyone to continue to support ongoing relief efforts.
Bahamas Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis stressed that returning the rest of the country’s tourism economy to normal was essential for long-term recovery of Abaco and Grand Bahama.

25th Annual ASEAN Charity Golf Tournament ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) is made up of 10 nation members of which 5 are represented in Vancouver, BC with consular offices. Since 1994, the Consulate Generals of the 5 ASEAN countries have organized an annual ASEAN Charity Golf Tournament. This year the following Consul Generals of the ASEAN member nations in Vancouver held the annual event on 9th August, 2019 at the University Golf Course: Consul General Malaysia: Shamsul Nizam bin Shamsuddin; Consul General Indonesia: Tuti Wahyuningsih Airman; Consul General Philippines: Maria Andrelita Austria; Consul General Thailand: Nontawat Chandrtri; Consul General Vietnam: Tu Lan Trinh The event besides strengthening friendships and promoting the strength of togetherness among the ASEAN countries and Canada, raises funds for the less fortunate in the Greater Vancouver community and this year raised $5000 in support of the Maple Ridge Foundation. The event attracted over 160 golfers and ended with a Gala Dinner with the awarding of prizes. Chairman of the 2019 ASEAN Charity Golf Tournament, Consul General Shamsul Nizam Shamsuddin thanked members, guests and sponsors for their support of this years event. Best team score winners were Eric Ed, Cindy Ed, Peter Lee, Ann Lee. Next year the 2020 ASEAN Charity Golf Tournament will be hosted by the Consulate General of the Philippines and members of the public are invited to par5
ticipate which presents an excellent opportunity to meet first hand with the local Consul Generals as well as business networking in general.

According to researchers, the light pink sand gets its hue from thousands of broken coral pieces, shells, and calcium carbonate materials left behind by foraminifera (tiny marine creatures with red and pink shells) that live in the coral reefs that surround the beach. Harbour Island, one of the islands of the Bahamas, is known to have one of the very best pink sand beaches in the world.
Eat all you can at the food festivals
With such a fascinating cuisine, food festivals in the Bahamas are must-attend events. Each major food festival during the year is an opportunity is to sit back and enjoy local entertainment as well as the most amazing dishes that the Bahamas has to offer. Two of the most popular food festivals are the All Andros Crab Fest held in June and the Eleuthera Pineapple Festival held at the end of May.

More than a third of the bird species and almost 40% of the mammal species are endemic to Indonesia. More than 1600 species of coral reef fish are unique to eastern Indonesia. Indonesia has a rich history, showcased in UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Borobudur Temple Compounds, Komodo National Park, Prambanan Temple Compounds, Ujung Kulon National Park, Cultural Landscape of Bali Province: The Subak System as Manifestation of the Tri Hita Karana Philosophy and many more. Our climate is always agreeable. With 80% of Indonesia being warm ocean, temperatures are always warm but not hot, despite being located on the equator. Normal temperatures range between 28 C on the coastal plains and 23 C in the higher mountain regions. Most of all, our nation is known for its friendly people. The dragons of Komodo The world’s largest lizards exist on just five Indonesian islands - Komodo, Rinca, Flores, Gili Motang, and Padar. They are truly fearsome, weighing up to 150 lbs and possessing toxic bites, allowing them to hunt and kill far bigger animals – even humans..

The seriously intrepid should consider a trip to Kerinci Seblat, the biggest national park on the island, where you may get to see tigers and the Sumatran rhino, if you’re lucky. Five star comforts are few, but the rewards are high. There’s also hiking across the lunar craters of the volcanoes of Berastagi, lakeside lounging in Danau Toba, diving with whale sharks in PulauWeh, and surfing off the Mentawaii Islands and Pulau Nias.

Nowhere in the world offers better diving than the Coral Triangle, an area of the Pacific Ocean that includes the waters around Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste and the Solomon Islands. One of the best ways to explore it is on a liveaboard boat around the Raja Ampat Islands in Indonesia’s West Papua province. Divers will find 75 per cent of all the world’s know coral species, and up to 2,000 species of reef fish.
The temples and mountains of Java It might be the most populous island in the world, with around 140 million residents, but Java has plenty of places to escape the crush. There are 12 national parks to explore – including Unescolisted Ujung Kulon – and volcanoes – including Bromo and Merapi – to hike up. 28
Java is also home to the world’s biggest Buddist temple, Borobudur, with its intricate lattice stupas set among paddy fields. It’s often crowded, so consider lesserknown sites such as Pawon, Mendut, Plaosan Lor and Kalasan, which retain an air of contemplation and peace.
The backpacker haven of Bali This is one of very few islands that manage to combine spirituality with a holiday; visitors can witness comingof-age ceremonies, as well as enjoy sundowners, firstrate dining and chic shopping, Art Ubud, the island’s cultural capital, there are frequent musical and dance performances, as well as galleries selling woodcarving, silverware, textiles, paintings and sculpture. There is trekking around terraced rice fields and two volcanoes in the north, Agung and Batur. Bali Barat National Park is a haven for deer, boar and macaques, and the offshore Menjangan Island has dive sites with schools of batfish, giant trevally and jacks. If backpacking isn’t your bag then visit Bali for its incredible hotels. Many 4 and 5 star resorts await you with luxurious accommodations.
And Lombok – Bali without the crowds Millions of people visit Bali each year seeking a beach paradise, but they may do better looking
about 30 miles east, to the lesser-known island of Lombok, known for its good surf, spectacular beaches and mountainous interior, or the neighbouring Gili Islands, ringed by coral reefs. In the past the Gili Islands were mainly visited by backpackers paying a few dollars a night for simple beach 29
accommodation. Now the biggest island, Gili Trawangan, is going upmarket with the opening of villa resorts, eco-lodges and spa retreats. But there is still a bohemian feel: instead of cars and motorcycles, local transport is by bicycle or horse-drawn carts called cidomos.”
There’s the indigenous tribes of Kalimantan The wild island of Borneo (of which Kalimantan
makes up around two thirds) has enchanted adventurers since the days of the Victorian explorers. Today, little has diluted that raw experience, and among its attractions are rainforests, indigenous tribes and the orang-utans of Tanjung Puting National Park.
South-east Asia’s biggest national park And finally it’s inexpensive Lorentz, a Unesco World Heritage site on the island of Papua, is vast – covering 9,674 square miles – and home to a huge array of ecosystems, including mangroves, rainforest, alpine tundra and equatorial glaciers. Its highest point, Puncak Jaya, is the tallest mountain between the Himalayas and the Andes. There are 123 mammalian species and 630 species of bird, including many that are endemic to the region. But much of the park remains unexplored – so scientists believe more are waiting to be discovered.
The ‘Paris of the East’ This sobriquet has been applied to numerous cities, including Bandung, on the island of Java. Its cooler climate makes it a popular weekend destination for residents of Jakarta; expect an array of fashionable boutiques and a surprisingly large number of Art Deco buildings.
Price surveys frequently attest to Indonesia’s suitability for affordable travel. According to the website Numbeo, its Cost of Living Index (which takes into account the price of accommodation, restaurant meals, taxi fares and leisure activities) is 36.33, putting it ahead of south-east Asian rivals Thailand (40.2), Myanmar (51.57), Cambodia (47.29) and Vietnam (39.5), and when it comes to the cost of food and drink its beaches are among the world’s least expensive.

Java’s second city, Yogyakarta, is the cultural and spiritual hub with all-night shadow-puppet performances, concerts and art exhibitions. It is also the best base for exploring the largest Buddhist temple - Borobudur and the vast Hindu temple complex of Prambanan, with its principal temples dedicated to Vishnu, Shiva and Brahma and hundreds of surrounding shrines.
There are more temples than you could visit in a lifetime Borobudur and Prambanan are best known, but there are literally hundreds of others, big and small. Bali is home to some of the most picturesque, including Tanah Lot, perched on a sea stack, and Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, which appears to float on a lake.
