Design Contest

Circaire Returns for 2nd Year From 5 to 7 May, Alcudia will once again stage the only Circus festival in the Balearic Islands: Circaire 2017 II. In the programme are 18 original and contemporary acts, and the inauguration will take place on Friday 5 May at 8pm in the lobby of the Auditorium of Alcudia.

The performances will take place in different parts of Alcudia (Pont de la Vila Roja, Plaça de la Rectoria, Passeig Pere Ventayol), as well as the Auditorium and the Cirq Bover tent, which will be installed in front of the Pollèntia Ruins and will act as the “nerve centre” of the fiesta, l’Espai Circaire.

There are more than 20 performances that will be staged inside and on the street and will cater to all ages. Performers hail from across Spain from the Balearic Islands, Andalusia, Madrid, to Catalonia and Extremadura, and some of them will be seen for the first time on the island.

There will be workshops, for the general public to try the trapeze, the trampoline or rings, and concerts and small performances will close the day of activities on both Friday and Saturday night. There will also be a competition where a jury will select three finalists to participate.

Pollensa Town Hall has opened the annual design contest for the programme and poster for the town’s famous La Patrona Fiesta.

The purpose is to, while in the process of receiving a great and original design, promote artistic creation and participation. The winner will receive €600, as well as a huge sense of pride.

The works must be original, unpublished and not awarded in other contests. Entrants must be over 16 and provide three options of posters as well as the programme design.

Local News Right of Passage to Ternelles The Supreme Court has overturned the ruling by the TSJB (Tribunal Superior de Justicia de Balears) of late 2015. The TSJB ruling revoked the right of way and access to the sea on the estate of Ternelles and ordered the Townhall in Pollensa to adapt its Urban Planning in line with the Natural Resources Management Plan (PORN) of the Serra de Tramuntana.

PORN, an unfortunate acronym, establishes limitations of passage for environmental reasons in certain areas, in this case named as the Castell del Rei and Cala Castell, which are in the Ternelles Estate.

The mayor of Pollensa, Miquel Àngel March, said the Supreme Court’s decision was “positive” because it leaves the door open to the maintenance of the right of way to the coast of Ternelles.

Bus and Parking Woes in Puerto Pollensa

Tots per Pollensa is asking that the application of this bus stop is accompanied by the authorization of a new parking area. The same party has been critical of a similar situation in Pollensa Old Town where new medical centre is due to be built on the carpark at Can Conill.

Calle Bot Petition

The Pollensa government team decided to withdraw from the agenda of the recent plenary meeting, the agreement with the Consorci de Transports de Mallorca (CTM) for the construction of a bus station in the Port due to the lack of sufficient support and because the other parties requested more time to study the proposal to understand that there are other alternatives of location of the terminal.

Residents of calle Bot in Puerto Pollensa have asked authorities to return the oneway system to their street.

A group of neighbours, bar and shop owners sent the formal request to the council last week. Those affected accuse the TownHall of “unilaterally and without any information” changing the street to two-way traffic.

In doing so it hinders any loading and unloading, making it difficult to replace equipment and receive deliveries.

Terrace Rumblings Bar terraces in the square of Campanet are to be regulated.

An order will regulate the use of the terraces in the Plaza Major, but so far only has the support of Més. The document will inform the owners of the space that they can occupy with chairs and tables but they should bring them in at the end of every day. In addition, they can have two racks for bikes but they will only be authorized until 5pm and between February and May.

Urbanization in Formentor Property owners in Formentor have appealed to the TownHall of Pollensa to reactivate the granting of construction licenses in the area. Urban activity has been paralyzed since 2005 when public debate was opened on whether or not to limit the impact of new buildings in this sensitive landscape, which is still classified as urban land.

The concession of the municipal license for work on Villa Cortina in 2005 resulted in a long judicial battle that contributed to the 2013 suspension of the urban regulations. The Supreme Court upheld the suspension in May 2015.

The urban regulations currently in force are those of 1990, while they are much less restrictive than those that were nullified, it means that the maximum

volume of construction per plot is limited to 2,100sqm, with no possibility of an auxiliary house. For the granting of new building permits in Formentor, a pre-provision of services is required in the urbanization itself, a responsibility that in compliance with the current legislation (1990) rests with the Town Council itself.

The current plan for the development sees the council fund the project and then bill the owners, however, the council is keen not to repeat past mistakes. The owners of Formentor met last week with the mayor and the town councillor, Tomeu Cifre Bennàssar, to ask for the renewal, warning of the unstoppable deterioration of the urbanization.

Road Access Limitations From last Monday, access by private car to Cala s’Almonia and Calo de Moro will be banned for non-residents.

The decision was made by authorities to curb the serious saturation that these two popular calas of Santanyí suffer. Instead, the beaches will be served by a shuttle bus that will connect Santanyí with the beaches. This is the third site to have limited access imposed. The system started with Es Trenc last year and Cala Varques also launches its bus-only service this summer.

In addition, there are reports that the Consell is seriously considering applying the same system in Formentor, sa Calobra and the port of Valldemossa. In total, the general director of Mobility and Transport, Jaume Mateu, speaks of “between eight and ten cases” of sensitive areas continued on page 3

One festival that really stands out is the Circaire this weekend. It seems a genuine ambition to make Alcudia the place for contemporary circus and a keenness for the art of the circus really shows. Good on you Alcudia, it looks like it’s going to be fantastic.

Gotmar, the Future is Bright The €3m regeneration of Gotmar is very nearly completed. Sa Bassa Blanca Museum Background The Fundacion Yannick y Ben Jakober was started in 1993, the same year that the cistern on the couple’s property was transformed into an underground gallery to accommodate a unique collection of children’s portraits from the 16th to the 19th centuries. Two years later, groups started to visit the estate to see this collection. By January 2001 it was opened to the public permanently and many came to see the Nins gallery, the rose garden and the sculpture garden together.

Five years later, the house in which the couple lived, a property they had built for them by Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy, was opened up

too. An elaborate labyrinth of room after room, it houses a vast collection of contemporary art and unique architectural features such as the Mudejar coffered ceiling.

The Foundation’s objective is “to preserve and to restore, to promote the educational, artistic and scientific potential in the sphere of biodiversity and it is to promote Fine Arts in general, painting and sculpture in particular, through the exhibition of works and the spread of knowledge.”

SoKraTES space Here you can find a crystal curtain by Swarovski, that forms the backdrop to a fossilised skeleton of a Siberian Woolly Rhinoceros, there are works by contemporary artists including Miquel Barcelo and Ben Jakober and Yannick Vu themselves. James Turrel’s Juke Blue is also on display.

The Nins Collection A collection of 150 paintings, with a common theme — children painted by artists across Europe between the 16th and 19th centuries.

ago, this has become an important collection of art.

Sculpture Garden The museum has its own zoo! The large granite works were created by Ben Jakober and Yannick Vu who were inspired by archaeological pieces around the world.

The House Designed by Hassan Fathy (of Cairo), the house is a Hispano Moresque building. Fathy retained just the outside walls of an existing farmhouse.

With white crenellated walls, traditional vaults and domes the façade is otherwise left plain, instead the central courtyard with gardens and fountains form the heart of the house. Most windows are covered by wooden lattices called “Mashrabiyas” and the doors and floor tiling are antique elements brought from Andalusia, Northern Spain and Morocco.

It is in this extraordinary house that more contemporary art can be found.

Walking around the estate of the Sa Bassa Blanca museum, it’s hard to believe that this is so under the radar, this should be on everyone’s must-see list. It is a veritable gem of modern art, a space where you can enjoy the art that surrounds you. It is well worth a visit, and with so much to see, bring a picnic and have lunch in the sculpture garden before taking on the next stage.

Food & Drink Fira del Vi The wine trade in Mallorca is growing year on year and testament to that is the increasing popularity and participation at Pollensa’s annual Wine Fair, held at the Claustre. The story is clear, old bodegas are being taken on by new generations, more land is being recovered and turned to vineyards, all with commitment, professionalism and creativity. The resulting quality of wine in Mallorca is placing the island as a contender on a national scale

with increasing exposure to the international market.

On a more local level, The Primitivo Wine Association in Pollensa started as a group of friends who all shared a love for wine. In 2004 they launched the first ever wine fair and are celebrating the 14th edition this year. The Fira del Vi has become somewhat of an institution surpassing all expectations. This growth is something organizers attribute to the dedication of wine makers on the island who over the last 30 years have fuelled a movement to restore and revitalize vineyards. It is these people who have made the recovery of native grapes and their local wines possible.

This year, the wine fair is back with four new wineries.

And while the fair takes place inside the Claustre, local

artisans will be exhibiting wine-based, special-edition products in the Joan March gardens just outside. Also, restaurants around the town will be participating with a special Wine Fair menu.

On entry, visitors receive a tasting glass, notebook and pencil as well a restaurant brochure, so your weekend is pretty much all set.

Swirling your wine in the glass You see people do it but it’s not just for show. Swirling wine in the glass allows oxygen to attach itself to the compounds that make the tannins, rounding them out and giving them a softer nature. It allows the wine to breath. Using a decanter is a good way of oxygenizing wine, it helps the wine to open up.

Walk to Son Real On the farm, there are native breeds of animals including sheep, black pigs, chickens, turkeys, donkeys, etc, which are raised and cared for.

The agriculture is totally ecological, with crops of almonds, carob and figs the most prominent.

A popular place for a schooltrip, the public finca of Son Real is probably quite familiar to the children in your life. But a beauty of ‘Balears Natura’, Son Real should not be kept exclusively for school children with clipboards. A day out in Son Real will reward you with animals, woodland, picnic areas, beach, rock pools, a refuge, a seemingly natural swimming pool and if that wasn’t enough, a pre-talayotic town, megalithic sepulchres, and a talayotic necropolis are there for exploration.

As you arrive at the finca, which is located halfway between Can Picafort and Son Serra de Marina, the estate—with its Manor House, workers’ cottages, a courtyard and more—dates back to the middle ages. The museum inside the Manor House is the display case for archaeological remains that were found on the estate, while new houses built in the last century are used for the information centre.

The wealth and variety of the landscape is magnificent and pine tree groves, holm oaks, sand dunes, cultivated lands and low hills as well as the diverse flora and fauna add to the finca’s beauty. The population of Mediterranean turtles is of particular interest. In the reserved hunting areas, only traditional “filats” (hunting nets) can be placed in the narrow passage between trees.

That said, Son Real still preserves some elements of human intervention on the landscape. Sandstone and sand quarries, old paths and a bunker are among the sights as well as the towers along the bay of Alcúdia, which were used in submarine exercises to help find the position lines, during the post-war period.

It is the access to the beach, that is the jewel in the crown. A 2km walk along a well-trodden path takes you through the dunes and woodland to reach the refuge and a beach that has enough rockpools to keep the children entertained all afternoon, before the walk back again. The Mallorquinista Glimmer of Hope Real Mallorca finally put an end to their run of ten games without a win when they overcame Sevilla Atletico in Andulacia last Sunday in an entertaining 3 – 2 victory. They are now six points from salvation although there are six games of the season left. It would take a comeback of biblical proportions if the Islanders were to avoid the ignominy of relegation to the Spanish Third Division (known as Segunda B). The news this week has been all about some very unsavoury incidents off the pitch so a victory was especially welcome.

After the previous game, a sterile 1-1 draw with Cordoba, the fans vented their anger at both management and players.

Several hundred of them waited outside the ground and police set up barriers to allow cars to pass through and leave the stadium. First up came Chief Executive Maheta Molango swiftly followed by Director of Football Javi Reccio. They were subjected to a storm of abuse as they are seen as the real reason for the clubs plight this season. Molango is a sports lawyer who was appointed to his position by the American owners and he has made lavish promises, none of which have been fulfilled. Reccio is responsible for player recruitment and the lack of a proven goalscorer and creative midfielder has led to constant criticism of the former Espanyol staff member. Worse was to follow as the players left one by one and the constant chant was “mercenaries”. At one point one of the barriers collapsed although there was no physical violence involved.

During the week, three fans attended a training session at the club’s Son Bibiloni ground and unfurled a banner entitled mercenarios and began to verbally abuse the players. Juan Culio headed in their direction to remonstrate and was held back by colleagues before the fans were ejected and the remaining training sessions of the week were closed to the public.

Mallorca’s next game is at home to Elche this coming Saturday 6th May with a 4pm kick off and then away to Valladolid on Saturday 13th May.

Real Mallorca 1-1 Cordoba

Junior Lago opened the scoring for the hosts in the second minute and hopes were high of a resounding victory against fellow strugglers Cordoba. But this is Mallorca and sloppy defending allowed an equalizer before the break. The second half was a tedious affair until the last five minutes when the islanders threw everything but the kitchen sink at their opponents whose keeper made a number of good saves.

Head coach Sergi rang the changes again and the recalled Brandon won, and converted a penalty in the first half – his first goal since November. After the break Moutinho, playing in an unfamiliar central role smashed home a 25-metre shot.

Immediately the hosts equalized after schoolboy defending by the visitors. Moutinho then latched on to a superb pass from Brandon to fire home his second. Campabadal gifted Sevilla a penalty which led to some late nerves but Mallorca held out. Is this the beginning of The Great Escape?
