Welcome to Barwon Heads Christmas is coming, and decorations are in the shops. Time to panic and clean the BBQ. BHA AGM - we held our AGM in October. Our Annual Report is on our website. We encourage you to participate and share your ideas. Thank you to our guests Jim Mason and Gary McPike. Our Committee for 2018-2019 is: President Sandy Gatehouse Joint Vice-President Gabrielle Nagle & John Nolan Treasurer Geoffrey Waite Secretary Colin Bridges Committee Sarah Jackson, Richard Hastings, Karen Firth, Philip Bade, Brian Cook We farewelled Judith Brooks a former President of the BHA and Committee member since 2010. Judith has made a significant contribution to the BHA and we will miss her active and forthright participation. We welcome new members Philip Bade and Brian Cook. This has been another very interesting and extremely busy year. It has been a strong team effort with significant community support and interest. In particular a big thank you to: Our loyal members and welcome to all our new members and supporters; -

-

Talking Heads - Trish has been so very supportive, encouraging and generous again this year. Our page 3 is our main mechanism for communicating with the town and our visitors. A wonderful committee, who all come when asked and participated in a broad range of community activities throughout the Bellarine; Our very generous donors.

We continue to build relationships within the community and are very pleased at the number of traders who continue as members and regularly attend our meetings. We are still trying to attract younger members, and acknowledge how hard it is for people with young families to attend our evening meetings. We welcome all new ideas.

The Bellarine - The BHA has been a strong supporter and leader in the establishment of the Combined Bellarine Community Associations “CBCA”. This group has really strengthened in 2017/2018. We meet bi-monthly or as required and have developed a trust and capacity to share information and collaborate on matters of mutual interest. Members include representatives from community associations from Portarlington, Indented Head, St Leonards, Ocean Grove, Breamlea, Drysdale, Clifton Springs and Point Lonsdale. The CBCA is organizing various election forums leading up to the State Election, and in discussions about CoGG budget items, which will benefit the whole of the Bellarine. CoGG Budget - is always a difficult beast to understand and we wonder what value the residents of Barwon Heads get for their very high rate contribution. It is quite clear that our contribution is

relied upon to support the “greater good”; however we expect responsive and informed decisions and an acknowledgement of the heavy lifting we do as a tourist attraction, coastal town supporting significant and rapidly developing adjacent growth areas and adapting to the significant change and growth within our coastal village. We have been asked to submit budget ideas to the Bellarine Councillors by the 10th of November. Please send us any ideas you might have.

Planning - continues to be a real challenge. We have recently heard criticism that the BHA is anti growth and anti development. We refute this very strongly. State Planning Policy directed to the Bellarine Peninsula recognises that managing urban growth will be critical to retaining the Peninsula's identity and attributes and seeks to preserve the individual character, identity and role of each Bellarine township. We are pleased that this is now a matter for the State election and urge all of you to attend the election forums that are taking place and ask questions of the candidates. We note the quote from the Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville "Only Labor will protect the lifestyle locals on the Bellarine Peninsula enjoy with permanent planning protection, enshrined in law this is about protecting our treasured communities and everything that is great about them.” We require further information from our politicians and don't apologise for not fully understanding what this means. In light of the past 2 years working with CoGG and recently attending the Planning Panel for the Barwon Heads structure plan we don't want it all to be for nothing. CoGG recognises that Barwon Heads is not a growth area but must nonetheless accommodate a level of growth. The BHA does not take issue with this broad proposition. However, the strategic context of Barwon Heads and related growth policy clearly does not support a wholesale increase in scale across the IHDA, as contemplated by the Proposed Planning Scheme Amendment C375. Development at all costs should not be the defining point of the debate. We expect proper protection for the unique character of Barwon Heads as a coastal village located with a sensitive environment and significant landscape setting. Traffic and pedestrian amenity - the heavy trucks have continued using our little town as a truck highway during October, polluting the air with their noise and smoke. They are constant as I write this. A recent chat with a driver revealed that he had travelled from Melbourne along the Bellarine Highway with the full load (due to the weight restriction on the Bridge) and was returning with the empty truck over the Barwon Heads Bridge and through Barwon Heads in order to avoid the stops on the Bellarine Highway. We remind Regional Roads that it has an obligation to manage the use of roads having regard to the principle that the primary purpose of a road is to be used by members of the public and that other uses are to be managed in a manner which minimises any adverse effect on the safe and efficient operation of the road and on the environment. We know that when the decision was made to re-build the Barwon Heads Bridge in its current location that ng

there was little risk analysis of the decision to build 2 bridges, and the implications of a significant pedestrian bridge. We have always been strong supporters of proper pedestrian crossings, and consider they should have been part of the original design for the 2 bridges. We are not just a holiday destination. We notice significant traffic increases www.barwonheadsassociation.com during the week as well as holidays. So now 8 years later Regional Roads has announced: “We're undertaking a raft of measures to help ease congestion in Barwon Heads and improve travel times for people travelling from Ocean Grove and the Bellarine this summer. To improve everyone's experience, we're undertaking a range of initiatives, including: · Traffic controllers will manage the Bridge Road pedestrian crossing in peak times · New left-hand turn at Ewing Blythe Drive · Electronic travel advisory signs. “ BHA Membership - We warmly thank our members for their very generous support and donations. Please renew your membership or join us if you haven't already. There are forms at the Barwon Head Post Office or on line. www.barwonheadsassociation.com

BARWON HEADS BOWLING CLUB

Bowling back in full swing As we head into November, bowls, in particular Pennant Bowls is back full on. As of this week we have two Saturday teams and one Tuesday team. The top Saturday team has started with three wins from three and the other teams are doing OK. Our younger brigade of players, the Duthie boys and Craig Polworth are performing beautifully. Pity we can't get more younger people to watch them in action, they make the whole game look terribly easy. Coming up once again this month is the Community Bowls. Played between teams from local businesses and organizations every Wednesday during November under the guidance of Jan and Alan Walter. A competitive and enjoyeable bowls contest between some very good promising bowlers and some who would seem to have a little way to go. Anyone wanting to see where a bowls career starts, blossums and could reach great heights and for others starts and finishes, come along on Wednesday th th st th nights between 6 and 8pm on 7 14 21 and 28 of November, refreshments available. st th th th Starting also in November is the Primary Schools' Bowls Program again under Jan and Alan. Wednesdays on 21 , 28 , 5 Dec, and 12 . Who knows where the next star comes from. A ladies four recently went to Portarlington Open Day and came home runnersup. A big congratulations to the rink who came home from pennant with a win and an eight to their name. To the non bowler that's a team taking 5 wickets in an over or kicking 15 goals in a quarter. Finally, what about the new bowler in her first pennant game, puts one close to the kitty, only to see the skip kick it away. Somewhat disgruntled her next bowl is also pretty good, only to be again kicked away. No had explained to our new bowler about the rollups in pennant. Until next time‌‌.good bowling.

Lobster Pot

Ever wonder where the birdies is?

While outdoors recently, fighting the never-ending battle against 'Barwon Heads buttercups' and other weeds; other weeding (e.g. the foreshore); or simply wandering around our idyllic surroundings admiring all the new growth responding to the welcome late winter rain & warmth, it is obvious that a new season is upon us. A silly childhood ditty comes to mind: Spring is sprung, The sap is ris, I wonder where the birdies is? Maybe I have too much time on my hands and not enough to occupy myself with. I now have an answer to that innocent inquiry: it seems as though birds of all species are gathered at our doorstep this year. Barwon Heads-THAT'S WHERE THE BIRDIES IS! Whilst it is fascinating to see rarely seen birds in greater numbers. To speculate why they are here is interesting too. Maybe it was the good winter rainfall. In any case many will not survive. Habitat loss, habitat competition, feral animals and road accidents to mention just a few threats. Oh well, back to the weeding. You can learn more about the birdies and more about the natural world over our back fences by visiting the Barwon Estuary Heritage Centre. It's located in the' Lobster Pot', the green building on the river front near 'At the Heads' restaurant. The summer opening season is almost here. It will be open between 1.00-4.00p.m. from 27 December onwards. Plan your visit soon. If you have spare time on your hands and are interested in the natural and cultural heritage of the Barwon Estuary and passing it on to others why not join the Friends of The Lobster Pot. You can contact the group through Barwon Coast. Visit the office or phone Maddie Glynn (52541118). Rob Kuebler Children visit the Lobster Pot

The quality of our environment - the air, soil and water depends on the roles trees play. Trees help create rain as they expel moisture into the atmosphere: their roots draw it from the soil and their leaves return it to the air. Trees clean the air we breathe by taking in carbon dioxide through the leaves and then giving off oxygen we need to breathe. If trees didn't breathe, neither could we. Roots help hold soil in place to prevent erosion which not only saves soil, but also keeps our waterways cleaner. You may have observed that water is usually cleaner when there is an abundance of trees. Trees provide shade in the summer to help cool our homes. In the winter, they block wind to help warm our homes.

Trees as Houses

Many animals, such as birds, possums and a variety of insects, spend much of their lives in trees. These animals are born in trees, live in trees, raise their young in trees and seldom come down to the ground. Trees provide them shelter from the weather and from enemies. Trees provide food in the form of fruits, nuts, leaves, bark, and roots. Even dead trees provide shelter and food for many insects. As trees are removed at a fast pace to build/extend houses, the quality of the life we’ve always loved in our seaside towns is decreased & our air quality lowers.

say, “Work smarter, not harder.” Choose one of the following ideas to try this month at home to help with time management… · Write a list of things that you would like to achieve in an hour, either on your own or together as a family. Number them in order from first to last. Start the timer and go. Discuss what happened. · Write another list of things that you would love to do in an hour. Do not do any of them. After an hour, discuss how you felt. · Plan one night of the week when everyone goes to bed early. Did you notice anything different the next day? · Turn the television off for one week and see what happens. · Start a stopwatch and have everyone close their eyes. Open them when you think two minutes have elapsed. Write down your time. Were you close? Discuss how long two minutes felt. · Make a simple calendar for a week that only includes some fun things that you will do together. Make sure you include the time that you plan to do each activity. · Keep a record of how many hours sleep everyone gets in the week. Compare and discuss once you have collected the data. · Choose one day of the week when you turn off the internet, phones and television and play some games together. · Sit together in the house somewhere and choose a book to read. Agree on a period of time that you will read. Set a timer and read. · Plan a menu for the week and decide who will do what to help shop, prepare, serve each meal and also who will clean up when finished.

Time Management by Andy McNeilly

“I am definitely going to take a course on time management... just as soon as I can work it into my schedule.” Louis E. Boone. Young people in our communities are experiencing higher rates mental stress, anxiety and bullying. It is vital that we are connected with our children, so they feel they have someone they can come to if they experience any mental stress or bullying. Additionally, for our children to succeed in the futures they design for themselves, more and more they will need executive skills, also known as life skills. These skills are often learnt later on in life by trial and error. They help us to be adaptable or to 'read the play'. Executive skills are the people skills that enable us human beings to be able to socialise, communicate and interact with each other in harmony. They are many and may include gratitude, empathy, communication, imagination, organisation, self-awareness, resilience and so forth. By linking the teaching of executive skills at home together as a family, it is hoped that you will all connect together as a close unit, so if your child experiences stress or anxiety, they will comfortably and confidently approach you to seek help. Time management could be defined as using our time wisely, organising and dividing it between various activities. It may be the ability to use our time effectively or productively. It has been suggested that effective time management can help us to improve work-life balance and therefore increasing our happiness. Other benefits we may notice could include getting more done while reducing stress. Additionally, we may waste less time and actually create more free time, spending it where we choose to. As some people

On the way home, Sandi will make some phone calls in the car, keeping in contact with her family and friends. Some evenings during the week, Sandi will find the time to help out on the tennis club committee or to write a paper for her studies. OP SHOP

th

Reflections

On September 13 . 1980, watched over by John Brady, then our Sth. Barwon Councillor, the All Saints' Opportunity Shop opened in the small room now occupied by the Jigsaw Library. This had been a Library run for the town by the Red Cross volunteers.

When the town got its own library, the widow of the man who had been Vicar of All Saints' during the sixties recognised that to bolster church and community funds, an Op Shop would be of great value. For the first ten years, roneo'd sheets were dropped into every letter-box of our then small sea-side town, asking for donations, and offering small grants to community organisations such as Red Cross and Vision Australia. In 1990, the donations needed to be sorted, priced and displayed in a larger space, so gradually, goods went into the Church Hall. At that time, trestle tables for clothing were placed on the floor of the Hall, now known as the Main Shop. Shelving was erected for books, bric-a-brac etc., and the shop moved across. At that time the Hall was still needed for church occasions, so that when I began work there in July 1993, we still had to pack everything up to clear the space. Church members did this difficult work, and it was quite a pain! The five regular Op Shop volunteers worked each Wednesday and Friday, for two hours, but we needed extra volunteers as we do now, since during school holidays we opened for five days. Wonderful Beatrice Waterman, who had run the shop, retired, and I took over. We soon purchased racks, and reluctantly explained that the Hall could no longer be disassembled. Little did I realise just how the Op Shop would grow! In 2002 we built the first garage, supposedly to house furniture and kitchenware. By 2005, this too had to be expanded by the building of the larger garage now known as the Show-Room and the smaller one became our Sorting-room. The former Hall Kitchen became the Book-Room, and since then our volunteer numbers have grown to 33. Only three of us work each time the shop opens, but we are very grateful to those who work even two hours a week, and to holiday volunteers. On each Monday a team works to sort goods which have arrived at the weekend. For the first full year the shop operated, our takings reached $4,294.15. In 2015 we reached the amazing total of $140,197.75. Overall more than $1,300,000 has been raised and distributed. Originally, decisions about how to disburse these funds relied on volunteers as part of the Committee of Management suggesting worthy groups, or projects. These meetings occurred twice yearly, as is still the case. This November 12th. when our next meeting occurs, for the first time, we are asking groups to fill in forms to indicate how much an organisation would like to receive, and for what purpose it is to be used. (Please come to the Op Shop SOON if you wish to have a form.) At this meeting, a new committee is elected, and I have at last realised that with the enormous changes that have occurred, in areas such as Occupational Health and Safety, and with requirements such as each volunteer needing Police Checks and Working With Children Certificates, and other such “administrivia”, I feel that I need to ask the Parish Council to appoint another Co-ordinator. Having worked for more than twenty-five years in what has become a far more complex position, and having put off many personal interests, and even the more mundane household jobs, such as gardening, and home-maintenance, I feel that I will really benefit from seeing a younger, fitter, and more “with-it” person than I take on this now very onerous job. I do thank ALL the wonderful people, volunteers, donors and customers for the enormous support I have received from you all. I know I will miss the wonderful chats I have with you. It may be that the next co-ordinator may feel that I am still needed to write all the messages which volunteers etc. know you readers may need to hear, but at this time, I think it is more than likely I can just take a rest from this also. God bless you all, Helen Edwards…..soon to be ex Op Shop Co-ordinator!

Enjoy your retirement Helen & thank you for your amazing contribution to our community, we’ll miss you. Trish ~ Editor

It's pretty nigh impossible to sit on our verandah in Barwon Heads when a strong South Easterly is on the run.

This pressing wind may have picked up its penetrating cold from the Antarctic or the Southern Alps of New Zealand, before racing across the Tasman, drawing in through the river's mouth and crash bang into our verandah. When this wind sweeps in we retreat inside, batten down the hatches (or we would if we had any) and seek out a sun drenched spot. On the same cold spring day, rugged up and further afield, I find sand lashing down Bridge Road, collecting in nooks and forming shoals and shoulders, then filling and spilling over verges and street gutters. A pedestrian gap in the blue stone retaining wall is the conduit or channel for the movement of this river sand. The steps beside the bridge are swamped; waves and ridges rising uncannily to the top step and beneath the commemorative plaque for the two Irish men who worked on the bridge and died in a car accident on the edge our town, far from home. From here the sand fans over the pathway and out across the street. Bridge Road becomes a wind tunnel to send it further west. I find this insistence of sand along the inland walkway from Ozone jetty to the Bridge. At one point the sand has run up the bank, powered through the pedestrian gap in the tea tree, dashed across the path and pushed metres inland. It forms a sand stream that is rippled, ridged and driven. This is the dynamic of sand dunes and deserts. Perhaps we could give this South Easterly a more nuanced and local name. Think of the Brickfielder, a hot, dry and dusty Northerly that sweeps down into South Australia and Victoria. I haven't heard it called this since Huxtable, my step-granddad, talked about it in Red Cliffs in 1971. We now call this wind a 'Northerly' and if we are lucky a 'Southerly Buster' will follow. We have the WA Fremantle Doctor, a cooling balm at the end of the day. And further afield the Mistral making mischief down the Rhone Valley, the stinging Sirocco from the Sahara, the Swiss Bise, the Italian Bora, the Chinook bearing down from the Rockies, the Enbata sea breeze in Japan, and they call a cold fickle wind in Californian 'Maria' The 'Freeman Twomey ' is my recommendation for the name of our Sou-Easterly, in commemoration of our Irish bridge builders, Adrian & Robert, traveling the world and their lives ending… near here, on a day when a cold SE wind swept in.

With the wind and river at my back I come across two travelers sitting on the public seat on the roundabout with their airport type suitcases and travel guide. They are struggling with their orientation and seeking some accommodation for the night, far far from Finland. A little further along I overhear a women say “And apparently there is a beach here as well.” Which brings me to a reading recommendation: Olga Tokarczuk's 'Flights'. This stunning novel (literary fiction, essay, memoir) is a meditation on our desire for, and experience of, travel. It will leave you much the wiser, perhaps a little perplexed and most eager for more. Mini essays on, amongst many other things, airports, guidebooks, the psychology of travel and stories about those who travel. In my reading of this fiction I came across short stories that I wanted to be novels and commentary that could be history writ large.

Why (not) join the Community Garden?

5 reasons why Community Gardens are great 1. Save money on healthy food

Eating healthy isn't cheap, however, we have a solution! Renting a $30 plot for the season provides 5 times the amount of food you would've spent that money on. Not only can you ensure organic quality but you will feel confident in knowing the food you are eating is local.

2. Meet new people - potential BFFs?

Joining the community garden is just that, you will be joining a new community of people who share similar interests. Our gardeners vary from life-long green thumbs to first timers. Wherever you are in your gardening life, you will be surrounded by people to learn from. Community gardens not only garden together, but they also celebrate the Earth and her creations.

3. A great way to stay active!

Being outside is so important for our bodies and our happiness. Working hard in the dirt and to keep your plants watered is a simple way to stay active. Along with working in your own plot you will have opportunities to work alongside a team of gardeners to keep the garden as a whole nice and clean. Working outside together can help you gain muscle and increase your vitamin D from the sun's great rays.

4.

Help protect our Earth.

Not only will growing plants help our environment, it will decrease the amount of packaging you would've used if you bought your veggies at the grocery store. You will become a stronger example of using the green approach in life.

5. Finally, you will feel the ultimate satisfaction from growing your own food. It feels amazing to reap your reward of dedicated hard work. Growing your own food, learning from others, experiencing something new, all these things contribute to a final satisfying, well deserved accomplishment. BARWON HEADS FINE MUSIC SOCIETY

The KIAZMA PIANO DUO who played for our October Saturday evening concert certainly “ lived up “ to expectations!! Aura Go and Tomoe Kawabata, both International Concert Pianists, were touring through the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) so it was a tremendous privilege for us to host them in Barwon Heads.

Their performance began with a lovely Franz Schubert sonata for 4 hands and followed on with a tribute to Claude Debussy in the 100th year after his death and performed three Preludes from his fascinating repertoire and harmony pictures; then Tchaikowsky's Russian Dance from Swan Lake for 2 pianos arranged by Debussy. They concluded with Igor Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring” which was incredibly dramatic, brilliant and exciting! To make the event even more exciting, we had set up the ability to film the four hands from above on a small screen which made it possible for everyone to view their hands in their amazing performance!! The renovated Hall did provide a beautiful setting for the very appreciative audience. By the time you read this, the Barwon Heads Chorale will have performed their “Drought Breaker Concert” (inspired by leader Natale Lewington) from which all funds will go to “Buy a Bale” for drought relief for our farmers! Hopefully the community will have been very supportive for such an important cause! Our next concert will be held in the Barwon Heads Community Hall on SUNDAY 11TH NOVEMBER AT 2.30pm and will present local BELLARINE CHOIRS for a fun singing afternoon including a guest appearance from “Jonny’s Hip Operation” followed by a sumptuous afternoon tea! Entry (minimum) gold coin donation. All funds raised go to “Buy a Bale”! Drought relief for our farmers: In spite of the recent rain, it ain’t over! Grass and crops need time to grow! Enquiries: please call Jenny on 5254 2580.

Talking life

see my “service” as a servant. I wondered what I was bringing my small people up to be. I wanted their minds free to be creative - not drudged down in the everyday of “menial” work. But then I realised that in order to be a true leader, you need to know how to be led.

So, they say you will always remember your first.

And that the best CEO at some stage, cleaned the building’s floors.

You know where you stood for your first kiss and where you surrendered to your first love. You remember how hollow bones can hurt when you let your first loss go. Firsts seem to stick deep, tucked away quietly deep inside. Where you can hide them gently and hold them softly. But for most of the time in our vivacious, busy lives, we forget them. My first cleaner was a big step. I never though I could be grown up enough or bourgeois enough to ever have one. Cleaners are what wealthy people have. They’re for important people, or famous people - people not anything at all like me. For twenty odd years at my paternal-inherited pedantic way, I scrubbed my own floors and wiped my own windows. I was never too posh to wipe my own toilet. And no-one would wipe them like me. My first clean in our new home was big. Very big. It was into the fifth hour of wiping walls and dusting doors that I knew something would have to give. It took a day for us to find each other. As soon as she walked through my door I knew she was my people. And for two years - for two hours a week my beautiful cleaner made me and my home shine.

Think hip openers, backbending and antar mouna. It is said that you sleep in the bed that you make. Unless of course, someone else makes your bed for you. Our yoga practice teaches us to be accountable for our actions. To be diligent with our mind and to be present for our heart. What our practice also offers us is time to reflect. But when I allowed my first one into my home, she came into my heart. I remembered how it felt to be cared for again. In turn, I remembered how I could care for others.

The 2018-19 Hooded Plover breeding season is well underway with established pairs on their territories Both NZ & unb and JU & unb at Collendina are onto their second nests for the season and PC & EH have their first nest at 13th Beach. UU & unb are back on territory near the OG SLSC. John Murray has reported a new pair for the Bellarine! Female silver band has paired up with an unbanded male at Collendina, bringing the total pairs along the coast from Point Lonsdale to Ocean Grove to seven; from just three pairs in 2008! Please watch for the signage alerting you to the breeding areas and give the hoodies space to raise their young. To reduce disturbance to the birds while they're breeding, please remember to leash your dogs at this time whenever you approach or are in a Hooded Plover breeding area. The City of Greater Geelong is calling for public comment on their draft Hooded Plover Conservation Action Plan 2018-2021 The Action Plan outlines a series of actions designed to improve the breeding success of hooded plovers, which nest on the beaches along two sections of coastline managed by the City – one at Breamlea, and the other between Ocean Grove and Point Lonsdale.

The plan’s overall goal is to achieve an annual success rate of at least 0.4 to 0.5 fledglings per breeding pair. It sets out to do this by:

Raising awareness about hooded plovers; Applying a collaborative, strategic approach towards hooded plover breeding protection; Supporting BirdLife Australia staff and volunteers; and Managing threats to hooded plover breeding efforts. The plan is the first of its kind, but continues the City’s efforts to protect the iconic birds, dating back to 2006. This included the formation of the Hooded Plover Working Group in 2013, which brought together a range of organisations with an interest in the birds’ conservation. The working group features representatives from BirdLife Australia, Friends of the Hooded Plover (Bellarine and Breamlea), Barwon Coast Committee of Management, the Borough of Queenscliffe, Parks Victoria, Barwon Water and the City. https://www.geelongaustralia.com.au/yoursay/item/8d62f5a0d70b12b.aspx For more details, or to become involved in Hooded Plover monitoring, please contact: hoodedplover@birdlife.org.au More information: http://www.birdlife.org.au/projects/beach-nesting-birds or http://myhoodie.com.au/ or http://www.facebook.com/hoodedplover

AMENDMENT C375 BARWON HEADS STRUCTURE PLAN VICTORIAN PLANNING PANEL AUGUST 2018

Thank you again to all those that have supported SBHA in the defense of the Boundary. As SBHA anticipated, the Panel was asked to consider the relocation of the town boundary for the full western edge as argued by land owners (Attached image of Figure 2: Aerial Photo: “Western Option” from Mid West Group Barwon Heads). This would represent a 43% increase in the township. The land owners to the west of town armed themselves with Melbourne barristers and a barrage of expert evidence in support of the notion that residential development could happen with no impact on the township or environment. SBHA together with BHA, Council and Dept of Environmental Water Land and Planning maintain that the question is less about what can/could be built on these lands but strategically why should this be contemplated? The fact there is no strategic document or policy at local, regional, state or national level supporting anything but “modest” growth in Barwon Heads should be the strongest defense against any greenfield growth, let alone a 43% growth in the township. Added to this is the strong growth within Barwon Heads over the past 10 years and the largest urban growth area in the State just 10 mins up the road and Ocean Grove just 2 kms away. We have been awaiting the outcome of the panel via their panel report that will be presented to Council any day now. Following approval of the COGG Settlement Strategy that looks to take development pressure away from the Bellarine Peninsula, we have every expectation that the Council will stick to its guns and protect the Barwon Heads boundary. We will again be asking for a strong community showing at that Council Meeting to ensure Council maintain their strong support for the boundary, the wetlands and Barwon Heads ROAD TRIP 3: BACK ON THE BUS. Following Council approval of the amendment it will then move to the State political realm for final approval. We have been very glad to hear that both sides of politics are committed to permanent settlement boundaries on the Bellarine. So in the lead up to the state election make sure all parties know just how important the boundary, the wetlands and Barwon Heads are to all Victorians.

Ratings are forecast using Bureau of Meteorology data for up to four days in advance, based on weather and other environmental conditions such as fuel load. The rating is your prompt to take action to stay safe. Importantly, you should have a bushfire survival plan already worked out, and discussed with your family so that everyone knows what you'll do in the event of a Severe, Extreme or Code Red day.

Low to Moderate, High, Very High

What does it mean? · If a fire starts, it can most likely be controlled in these conditions and homes can provide safety. · Controlled burning off may occur in these conditions if it is safe - check to see if permits apply. What should I do? · Check your bushfire survival plan. · Monitor conditions. · Action may be needed. · Leave if necessary.

Code Red

What does it mean? · These are the worst conditions for a bush or grass fire. · The safest place to be is away from high risk bushfire areas What should I do? · Leaving high risk bushfire areas the night before or early in the day is your safest option - do not wait and see. · Know your trigger - make a decision about: o when you will leave o where you will go o how you will get there o when you will return o what will you do if you cannot leave And remember to always be aware of local conditions and seek information by listening to your emergency broadcasters, go to cfa.vic.gov.au or call the VicEmergency Hotline on 1800 226 226. Jump onto our Barwon Heads CFA Facebook page to see what the Brigade members get up to. We post important fire safety information and share photos and stories of past events. Please like, follow and share our page. The Barwon Heads Fire Brigade is seeking new members. If you are interested in learning new skills, meeting new people and being part of a team that contributes to the safety of our community, please call Captain Helen Wood on 0438 507 273, or message us on our Facebook page. SEAGULLS BASKETBALL CLUB Barwon Heads Seagulls basketball Club would like to announce with great pride that we have joined forces with Bendigo Bank, with them becoming our major sponsor.

Bendigo Bank are the only community bank in the Bellarine and are very committed to giving back to the local community, not just monetarily but also socially and culturally. Their logo adorns our new singlets from here on, and this has also meant we have been able to pass on a savings on singlets to our members. As of this season, new singlets are now just $30, and we buy them back from our players for $20 when they're done, so effectively just a $10 cost to our members for singlets, thanks to Bendigo Bank. And also, this lovely post from our president This is one of the many reasons I love this basketball club. This ball was given to me several years ago by the team I coached at the time, the great Seagulls Black. I wanted nothing, I expected nothing, but having this as a memento of that time brings me great joy. So, with a new season about to start, this amazing basketball club welcomes another batch of new kids to the fold, and hopes that like so many Seagulls before you, you love every minute of your time with our club. BARWON HEADS CRICKET CLUB

There is a bit of a focus on the success of the junior girls and boys this season in this month's offering.

We have had a couple of boys make their A Grade debut this season. In round four this season, we welcomed a 2 new members to the capped A Grade fraternity, both have come through the grades in the usual manner and both have deserved their place in the team, but one is a little bit special. Stirling Sheir and Will Snookes have played a bit of cricket together through their junior development and both have shown some promise for a number of seasons in senior teams as well, but in the first few weeks this year both have thrust their names before the selectors to gain selection in the firsts. Stirling was named in Round 3 for a match that was washed out and had to wait for a second week to debut, and the following week Will was added to the team as well so they would both got a chance to debut together. Stirling and his brothers have been familiar faces around the club for a few seasons now and they are well liked and gaining respect for their cricket ability and their friendly and polite manner. Will also has a brother, and again both are well known and well liked around the club, and Will's case is a little different to the standard senior debut. Throughout the 70s and 80s Geoff McCoombe was a regular and integral part of successful A Grade teams for Barwon Heads. He played in all of the fabled “5 in a row” premiership teams and made runs in all of those final series. Geoff was also for some years the treasurer of the club and is a revered and honoured life member. Geoff's son Scott also played in our A Grade team during the 90s. And in Round 4, Geoff's grandson Will Snookes took part in his first A Grade game, receiving cap number 177. Will is the son of Geoff's daughter Leesa and has distinguished himself over a number of innings since late last summer when he scored a terrific 90 in the C Grade

and since in B Grade where he took an opportunity to bat an entire innings last game. He thoroughly deserves his place in today's game. Unfortunately as the game panned out Will wasn't required to bat, but hopefully he'll get his chance soon enough. Will is the latest player to represent a third generation in his family playing A Grade for the club. Bill, Peter and Matthew Wilkinson and Stuart, Russell & David and Lewis & Taylor Hyland having also been 1st, 2nd and 3rd generations to play. The club is very proud of the father son tradition throughout all the grades, but these three families have a special place in our rich history. Well deserved to Stirling and Will and we wish you many successes in the game. Also, other congratulations go to the mighty BHCC Girls Cricket Team who kicked off their Geelong Renegades Girls League season with a hard fought victory against Grovedale! The girls are playing in the Stage 1 division of the Geelong Junior Cricket Association and have had a most enthusiastic start to the season. The club is very proud to have a girl's team as we have a long history of girls joining in with the boys in the game, but to be able to provide a playing environment where the girls are able to have a team of their own and to play against the girls from other clubs. Junior participation is of course the foundation of any sporting club and again we have a rich history of junior teams. This year we have again fielded a number of junior teams. We need all the support we can get and the Barwon Grove Golf Club have been very generous with a donation that we will spend on junior support only. Thanks to the Tin Shed crew for the kind support. As mentioned we have a number of players in our own first grade team who have been junior players with our club including Captain Sam Schaller, but we have also seen a number of our juniors progress to levels beyond our club's. A couple of recent examples are…………….

Former junior and senior cricketer, Hunter KremerSlevin who was recently named captain of the Geelong Cricket Club 4th XI in the Victorian Cricket Association. Hunter was a standout junior before making the move into GCA club South Barwon and playing a major role in the 1st's as a opening bowler before moving into Geelong. It says a lot about Hunter's love for the game and knowledge to be made captain at such a young age and the club wishes all the best to Hunter. Also. Congratulations are also in order to our former junior player Joel Blain who made his Geelong CC First Eleven debut in October. Joel is our first player to progress from community cricket, through the junior (and senior) ranks at Barwon Heads, to play at the highest level in Geelong. Joel is a leg spinner who spent last winter in England playing for the Whalley Cricket Club in the Ribblesdale Cricket League in Lancashire. There he was semi-affectionately dubbed “The Convict” and he took 64 wickets and made more than 300 runs. In his first game with Geelong CC, he bowled 5 overs for only 14 runs in a win against Greenvale. We wish Joel much success with the Cats. Just to finish off with a word of thanks. Two former premiership players at the club who are now way beyond their playing days (and weights) have been most instrumental in their support in the early stages of the season. Both Tim Ford and Peter Molloy have set about raising the participation levels of the Nightwatchmen and also of general sponsorship over the first few weeks of the season and their hard work and persuasion have brought a few more sponsors and a few more faces into the club on a sunny afternoon. Thanks to Tim and Peter for their hard work and thanks also to the sponsors and Nightwatchmen for their support. More next month, Matt Dunell

We get to meet the mastermind behind the LEN Talks, Board member Damien O'Malley.

One of two Damien's on the Board, he co chairs the Business development Sub Committee with… you guessed it- Damien Shaw. When did you join the Barwon Heads Community Bank Board? November 2017 And your reason for joining the Board? Wanted to contribute to a local organisation that is active and contributing to the community. What do you do when not on the Board? Works as a consultant, so spend a fair amount of time away from Barwon Heads. Endeavour to support my wife's business as often as I can (it's tough but important to do!) Sometimes run, sometimes ride, quite often think about doing those two things. Who's in your family in Barwon Heads? Wife & 13 year old son How long have you lived in Barwon Heads 10 years. And your favourite sport to play? Basketball (retired) What's your favourite sport to watch? Footy AFL Best financial advice you have been given? Develop a financial plan and stick to it. Best financial advice you have been given, then ignored to your financial detriment Develop a financial plan and stick to it. If you weren't living in Barwon Heads, where would you living? Unrealistically - New York, London, Paris, San Francisco...... lot's of places Realistically Melbourne Favourite holiday destination New York, London, Paris, San Francisco...... lot's of places Japan “Go to” activity / place around Barwon Heads that you always do when a new visitor arrives? This is awkward…. Barwon Heads Hotel After talking about going for a run, bike ride or swim

“An entrepreneur is someone who will jump off a cliff and assemble an airplane on the way down.” Welcome to the world of start ups, innovation and technology. Crazy. Well outside most of our working lives, and our comfort zone, the world of the entrepreneur and what it takes to be one is fascinating. The above quote is a well known one by very successful American entrepreneur Reid Hoffman. However the words below come from an evening at Barwon Heads Pub at the inaugural LEN Talks where the opportunity to listen, network and exchange ideas made for a very enjoyable evening. There's no balance. You need to be obsessed. It's not office hours. You can't do a start up unless you're a learner. I'm a start up junkie. When you find a solution to a problem and show it to a bunch of people and they say “where have you been?” it's like a hit. Solve a burning problem. Not too early, not too late. Timing is everything. The team is vital. I discovered late in my life that I was an entrepreneur. I was glad to discover that I wasn't nuts. As an entrepreneur, you need to marry well. If you're not embarrassed by your first launch, you're not trying hard enough. The Barwon Heads Community Bank was proud to bring together over 30 community members for our first LEN Talk series “Technology, Innovation and Start Ups”. In short, sharp presentations mixed with networking and catching up at the Bar, the night celebrated the stories, insights and talents of Fi Mercer(founder Governance Evaluator), Simon Quirk (CEO and co-founder Vidversity, ConvX, Strategy Fusion & Fourth Line) and Peter Dostis (CEO Runway Geelong and Ballarat). To be held quarterly, the LEN Talks will be a platform for diverse topics, local talents and sharing ideas. Perhaps the next will be “Healthy Ideas in Local Sports”? If you have a burning idea or a local expert that you'd love to hear, let us know via the Barwon Heads Community Bank Facebook page. Karen Finn was the lucky winner of the the 'Spring' themed door prize of locally produced Rose from the Barwon Heads Wine Store combined with outdoor wine glasses from Frith.

Barwon Heads Community Bank News

Bendigo and Adelaide Bank delivers strong FY results, poised for customer growth. As you know, we are a small community bank but we are part of something bigger. So, we were proud that in mid August, the Bendigo and Adelaide Bank (Australia's fifth largest retail bank) announced an after tax statutory profit of $434.5 million for the 12 months ending 30 June 2018. We won't go into all the details here have a look at bendigobank.com.au. What we did like though was this quote from Managing Director Marnie Baker: “At a time when community standards in banking have never been more important, the Community Bank® model is delivering significant social and economic benefits for Australian communities. More than $200 million has been returned to local communities in 20 years about $17 million this year and we're proud to enable Australians and their communities to take greater control of their financial future by investing in themselves to create prosperous and sustainable lives.” This is what we are striving to do at Barwon Heads Community Bank be successful so we can create prosperous and sustainable lives for our community. At the moment, our Community Bank has contributed over $220,000 to local community thanks to the support of our shareholders and customers. Great Victorian Fish Count @ Barwon Bluff Marine Sanctuary Sunday 2 December 2018 What?

Come and join Friends of the Bluff and Parks Victoria as we undertake the annual Great Victorian Fish Count on Sunday 2 December 2018.

Why?

The Great Victorian Fish Count is an opportunity to get a snapshot of several common or interesting fish species living in Victorian waters. Our poster fish for this year is the the Port Jackson shark as we celebrate the friendly faces of our iconic Victorian coast. This data allows an estimation of the structure of fish communities around the coast and comparisons with previous and future fish counts taken at the same time each year.

Where?

The Great Australian Fish Count has taken place within Barwon Bluff Marine Sanctuary for the past thirteen years, and is one of only 4 sites in Victoria that have had continuous monitoring. The actual location for the survey will depend on conditions on the day and further information will be provided on site at the activity briefing.

When?

Meet in the top car park at the Bluff (27W) at 12:00pm to register and receive pre-activity safety briefing. We aim to be in the water by 12:45pm and wrap up by 13:45pm. Low tide 13:30 /0.48m / *1hr has been added for official summer time

OPTOMETRISTS

Who?

The fish count is open to all competent snorkelers. All equipment including wetsuits, mask, snorkel, and fins, must be provided by participants. Fish ID and recording slates will be provided. Children 12 and over are welcome to participate under full supervision of parents or guardians. Participant numbers will be limited to a maximum of 25, volunteers should register their intent to participate with stephen.tuohy@parks.vic.gov.au (8427 3246 / 0400 612 198).

BARWON HEADS PRIMARY SCHOOL Setting Goals for Wellbeing

At Barwon Heads PS we have developed an innovative way of enabling our students to set personal wellbeing goals. Our set of Positive Statements is aligned with our wellbeing model and goals can be taken from one of the following areas: Positive Emotions I use many words to express my emotions Engagement I make the most of my learning opportunities Relationships I accept, understand and empathise with others Mindfulness I can pause and show awareness Accomplishment I have a growth mindset Once students have chosen their goal, they identify three actions necessary for them to enact their goal. Some examples include: My personal goal is to be enthusiastic towards my learning by thinking about what I enjoy about school work, working hard and having a positive mindset. My personal goal is to be a bucket filler by saying nice words, including others, being polite and being happy. Some people have come up with some great ways of sharing our positive statements including these chatterboxes. We love setting goals and setting our own wellbeing goals can help us to identify what helps us on a personal level to live happy lives and to flourish.

TRIP TO UGANDA

_______________________ Why did Archie go to Uganda?

The Cotton On Foundation funds a project to harvest rain water by installing Rhino Water Tanks in the Rakia District in Uganda and this is where Barwon Heads’ plumber Archie Gubbins got involved. As the only white man in the area, Archie spent the first six weeks on his own, living with priests and nuns with no power or water. As part of their project to empower and educate local youth, Cotton On employs 30 people in an office in the Ugandan area of Masaka which is located about 37kms away from the Equator towards the south. Architects, designers, builders and contractors work on various school building projects and Archie is employed training local plumbers. The lush, green town of Rakai is approximately 65.5 kilometres (40.7 mi), by road, southwest of Masaka, the largest city in the sub-region. Looking around, Archie has seen a great opportunity for tourism in this region and his aim is to take people to the area (max 6) and liaise between the Aussie’s and the Africans. You will meet the friendly locals, see wild life, and as part of a small group, enjoy an experience of a lifetime. See Archie’s trip details at right.

________________ COMMENCING MARCH 1ST 2019 The first tour commences during the rainy season in the Rakia District and you will experience dramatic thunderstorms in incredibly lush, green terrain. These tours are in a safe area known as “The Pearl of Africa”. Experience village life, visit the school, the National Park surrounded by Lake Victoria and the wonderful wild life including gorillas, elephants.

Barwon Estuary Project Photo: Cassy Twomey

It is a beautiful time of year in the Estuary with many flowers beginning to bloom and the flurry of spring activity Last month the Barwon Estuary Project’s Textile Workshop with Susan Matthews was a huge success. Susan led the two-day course with several community members and some beautiful works were produced. This month we had a River Ramble led by Cassy Twomey. This fantastic walk along the river had community members introduced to some of the intricacies of Estuary botanical life.

Upcoming for the Estuary Project We have been working on an Estuary Board Game all year and are hopeful that it will be available to play early next year. The game will be a new and unique way to learn about the Estuary, and involves working together to stop various environmental threats. We have had some great help from Barwon Coast, Barwon Heads Primary School, Surf Side Primary School, EstuaryWatch and Parks Victoria. Financial assistance for the game has been provided by the Hamer Sprout Fund. Our art exhibition A Fragile Beauty is rapidly approaching! If you don’t already have it in the diary, please lock in Nov 3-4 at the Ocean Grove Pavilion. It is shaping up to be a wonderful weekend that celebrates local artists and the Estuary. As always, we are collecting pieces for our Barwon Estuary Journal. If you have any pieces (poems, drawings, stories, paintings etc.) on the Estuary that you would be happy to submit for consideration, please contact barwonestuary@gmail.com or drop off to 24 Wattlebird Crescent Barwon Heads. INSPIRATIONAL COLOUR ~ SARA PAXTON EXHIBITION 3 30 NOVEMBER

This month will be a very busy month at Seaview with a stunning exhibition from Sara Paxton whose work is highly sort after and has a strong following. Her paintings are loved for their vibrant treatment of subject matter. Her vividly bright colours and contemporary form give her paintings a unique expressive style. Working mostly in oils she uses various techniques to build texture, shape and form. Sara has a great understanding of the power of colour and its ability to elicit an emotional response, and the varying moods of her work can be both exciting and dramatic. Also this month new works from Christine Robinson and Lynne Bickhoff.

Seaview is also a participant in the Bellarine Arts Trail Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th November. Details and Maps available at the gallery.
