Due to a close affiliation with Barwon Heads over 40 years and now a permanent resident for several years I would like to offer a small service back to the community. After noticing that folk in their later years (my mother included) quite often need a simple chore completed to make a big difference to their life. This could be setting frithbarwonheads a mouse trap, opening a jar, changing an out of reach light bulb, fixing a hose, check the switchboard just to name a few. I am offering fifteen minutes of my time for free for anyone who needs it. I know most people have friends and family to help with tasks that are a little beyond ones reach but some do not. I thought this would be a nice thing to offer, not that I would expect many requests nor do I have a lot of spare time, and I can only help with items within my ability but at least people will know that it is completely fine to ask for a hand. You never know, it might catch on! Michael Ramsay 0418 334 075

Barwon Heads is continually changing, last month we farewelled Heather and Peppercorn Foods and then we found out that Chris Stirk has vacated his business from the corner he has occupied for so long. We will miss his collection, his chats, the colour of the corner and its uniqueness. Barwon Heads is losing its local identities on the main street, which is so sad. In this context we should all acknowledge how much we all rely on our monthly edition of Talking Heads. The BHA in particular values our wonderful page 3 and again we warmly thank Trish for this honour. We urge all readers to use the information in Talking Heads and support the businesses that advertise in it. These advertisements support the local groups that pay little and less for our opportunity to communicate. We need to recognise what maintains Barwon Heads as a unique coastal village. It is our people, unique businesses and our strong sense of community that will protect our coastal community, not CoGG or the State Government. On our page 3 in February Talking Heads there was also a quote from Wynton Marsalis (put there by the Editor) “Only a few act the rest of us reap the benefits of their risk”. Please join the BHA and show your support. www.barwonheadsassociation.com Health The discussion about health in Barwon Heads continues. This is not an easy discussion and it is hard to come to a landing place that satisfies everyone. We note that Daniel Vella the Principal of the Barwon Heads Primary School has sent the following message to the school community. “In January, in response to community concern about this coverage, the Victorian School Building Authority (VSBA) commissioned independent tests of the soil at Barwon Heads Primary School. These tests were undertaken purely to reassure the community; there was no other known indication that testing was needed. We now have the full independent test results, and I can confirm that there is no cause for concern about the soil at Barwon Heads Primary School. The independent tests covered a broad range of potential contaminants in our soil, and none were found to be present at levels that were harmful to human health. You will be able to access specific data next week when the final report is shared with you via our school website. As you are aware, the recent Chief Health Officer report found no evidence of a higher overall cancer incidence rate, or of increased rates of specific cancers, in any geographical areas of the Bellarine Peninsula as compared to elsewhere in Australia.” The Department of Health and Human Services ran an Open House drop-in event at 13th Beach Golf Links, Barwon Heads Rd, Barwon Heads on Monday 25 February from 3-7pm. Not an easy place to drop in to, but we hope many have participated and had their questions answered. As this session will have happened by the time this goes to print so we will be commenting in the April edition. We understand that there are answers to some questions on the CoGG website, but we still don't have answers to the questions we have sent to the Chef Health Officer. We will publish those answers if we receive them.

Planning Barwon Heads Structure Plan C375 The Council discussed this matter on the 12th of February at its community meeting at the Potato Shed Drysdale. It was deferred to the Council meeting on February 26th. We anticipate that it will be have been approved at that meeting. We have met with Council planners and Cr Asher again, but have been told that the views of the BHA are just one voice and that most agree with the content of the plan. We strongly support the protection of the boundary; the environmental significance overlay schedule for Warrenbeen Court; the change from General Residential Zone to Neighbourhood Residential Zone for the northern part of Barwon Heads and the change from Residential Growth Zone for the area south of Bridge Rd and a strip on the western side of Golf Links Rd. We have expressed our concerns about the size of the Increased Housing Diversity Area, which is classified as a Residential Growth Area Schedule 3. We don't believe there are adequate safeguards especially when many developments do not have to be advertised. So you can suddenly have an 11metre house built next to you without advertisement or notice and you will have no rights to object. An example of this is the development at 4 Bridge Rd, which was not required to be advertised. The DDO 42 only applies where there is a requirement to advertise. The objective of an IHDA is: - to evolve the character of these areas through more intensive development - to ensure that the density, mass and scale of residential development is appropriate to the location, role and character of the specific IHDA - to ensure development makes a positive architectural and urban design contribution to the IHDA - to promote diversity of housing types to cater for a variety of lifestyle needs - to promote walking trips and pedestrian safety within the IHDAs - to encourage new development to provide a high level of on-site amenity for future residents.

Peninsula enjoy with permanent planning protection, enshrined in law this is about protecting our treasured communities and everything that is great about them.” We repeat our request to Lisa Neville: “ We expect the Bellarine to be protected and consider the VC110 Planning Scheme Amendment that permits the eleven metre and three storey developments in the www.barwonheadsassociation.com Residential Growth Area as of right a total disaster for all of us”. We understand that the government is about to begin yet another consultation process for declaration of the Bellarine as a distinctive area under new planning legislation, which would be similar to the form of the Macedon Ranges legislation. The New Bellarine Distinctive Area & Landscape Project Kim McGough Manager, Barwon South West Regional Planning Services with the Department of Environment, Land, Water & Planning “DELWP” (this department represents Ministers Richard Wynne, Lily D'Ambrosio, Lisa Neville, Jaclyn Symes) attended the Combined Bellarine Community Associations meeting in February to discuss the “NEW Bellarine Distinctive Area & Landscape Project”. He was easy to listen to and we will spend a lot more time with him over the next 18 months. He acknowledged that the Bellarine Region encompasses 9 municipalities. There was a robust discussion and he outlined the inputs and responsibilities in planning process; noted growth on Bellarine; advised that part of the distinctive areas legislation is to recalibrate and adjust procedures in the context of recent growth and that lower growth will be theme. We understand it will involve further reconsideration of the town boundaries. We discussed that DWELP as the guardian of the planning process in Victoria is aware that 'one size fits all' approach does not in fact sit well in all communities. ResCode (Residential Development Standards) might need to be changed to encompass stronger protection mechanisms. This is an interesting process please join in. This NEW project will take a lot time and patience we need new people and members.

We repeat the outcomes we proposed in our submission to the Panel and we will continue to lobby the State Government for these changes: - A reduction in the maximum height in the Increased Housing Diversity Area (“the IHDA”) from 11m to 9m outside of the commercial and mixed use zone by an acceptable planning scheme amendment - The inclusion of more specific requirements and decision guidelines in DDO41 and DDO42 to ensure the coastal character of Barwon Heads is identified and protected for all dwellings and not just those that are triggered by a planning permit - The inclusion of the 'Barwon Heads Residential and Landscape Character Assessment' Hansen report dated March 2017 as a Reference Document to DDO41 and DDO42.

Bellarine Hoodie report

It has been a season of highs and lows; in other words a typical season for the Bellarine Hooded plovers and their guardians!

From the East: At Point Lonsdale, HY & MD's sole chick hatched on 6/2/19 near the Point Lonsdale light house. EL & PT fledged their chick on Valentine's Day and PT's brother PL's remaining two chicks fledged the same day at Collendina. At the OG Spit: To the best of anyone's knowledge, UU & unb's chick fledged. It had been observed flying well on the 30th and 31st with the 31st as official fledge date. It was last seen on New Year's Eve then, on New Year's Day, the family weren't observed on territory. On the second of January, the parents were back at 16W-17W without their fledgling. We are hoping that it's headed further afield and not in the belly of a cat or fox! UU and unb are second attempt for the season, failed on the hatch date, possibly due to silver gull predation.

To the West: All doom and gloom along the Barwon Heads coast...nest wash outs, foxes, ravens, chicks succumbing to the elements (possibly due to disturbance by humans / dogs) and then chicks taken by kestrels (observed and captured rather

graphically by a traumatised Sandy!) SN & CR are having another attempt, so hopefully, they'll be able to elude the kestrels this time! BARWON HEADS CYCLING CLUB

Bike riders come in all shapes and sizes and there are as many different motivations for riding as there are people who do it. At one end of the spectrum there are people who make a living out of doing it very fast and over long distances. Their stamina and skill on two wheels leaves many of us in utter awe at what human beings are capable of. And in one weekend in January we are lucky enough to have the best of the best come to our village. Briefly. Very Briefly. Blink-and-you-miss-it briefly. But the cavalcade of police and broadcast choppers keep us entertained for enough time in the leadup to know that something special is happening. And special it is. Not many world class sporting events carry the name of an individual and five years in, The Cadel Evan's Great Ocean Road Race only grows in stature. The inside word is that this year's event was the best yet. A great feature of the weekend is the People's Ride, where more ordinary cyclists get to pit themselves against part or all of the course. Again this year, a bunch from the BHCC joined the thousands who set off from the Geelong Waterfront for the 115km circuit which included some challenging sections including the infamous Challambra climb where the road ramps to 22%. Well done to the crew who rode. Again, as in previous years, a handful of BHCC members joined the many other volunteers who help facilitate the safety of both the riders and the public. Not only do you get to wear high vis and feel important, you get a great vantage point to see the riders flash past ‌ before you head home and spend the rest of the afternoon watching it on TV. Keep peddling, Col

BARWON HEADS BOWLING CLUB Bowling into 2019 As we go to press only two games of regular pennant and the finals to go, thank you, did someone say. At this stage we appear to have two of our three teams competing in the finals, not a bad result from a Club battling for numbers. Also about to happen is Club Champion Craig Polwarths' entry in Champion of Champions for the region. Craig has a very tough draw, but is our most likely contender in recent years to progress. Best of luck Craig. A feel good story to emerge from the Club recently is the move by hardworking barman Robert Wilson to use a bowling arm. Most people who take up the arm take years to master the delivery etc, Robert, seriously, has taken 5 minutes and gone from, in his own words a handy bowler, to future club champion. Not bad for a man who recently had his 80th birthday. Good to see Alby, Norm Buckley and Marg Leonard back at the Club recently all have had some health issues of late. As we head into winter we would again encourage anyone looking for a game of bowls, either as a one off thing or more regularly to contact the Club. As a Club that needs new bowlers we will go to great lengths to give people a taste of bowls. All the best to those teams in the finals, time Barwon Heads had another flag on the wall. Until next month, good bowling.

Connecting

with your kids

Being Energetic “An energetic man will succeed where an indolent one would vegetate and inevitably perish.” Jules Verne. Young people in our communities are experiencing higher rates mental stress, anxiety and bullying. It is vital that we are connected with our children, so they feel they have someone they can come to if they experience any mental stress or bullying. Additionally, for our children to succeed in the futures they design for themselves, more and more they will need executive skills, also known as life skills. These skills are often learnt later on in life by trial and error. They help us to be adaptable or to 'read the play'. Executive skills are the people skills that enable us human beings to be able to socialise, communicate and interact with each other in harmony. They are many and may include gratitude, empathy, communication, imagination, organisation, self-awareness, resilience and so forth. By linking the teaching of executive skills at home together as a family, it is hoped that you will all connect together as a close unit, so if your child experiences stress or anxiety, they will comfortably and confidently approach you to seek help.

enthusiastic and full of energy whenever we chose? If we were able to create energy out of nothing, what things could we achieve? Some of the benefits of us being energetic could be simply getting more stuff done. Others may want to be around us more as this energy can be contagious. As German music group, Snap, sang in 1990, “I Got the Power!” Try one of the following this month to help create some more energy within your family. Get to it and have some fun! · Get up early and see the sunrise. · Hold a 'trick show' where everyone gets to show any tricks or stunts that they can do. · Blow up a balloon and play balloon tennis, soccer or any other sport you fancy. · Hold a family Olympics event in the back yard. · Go to a lake, river or to the beach and skip stones in the water. · Make an obstacle course in the garden or at the local park. · Put your feet into two empty tissue boxes and go indoor skating. · Have a pillow fight. · Make a paper plane and fly it at the local park. · Go for a bike ride or long walk together.

Loads of energy and vitality who wouldn't want more of this? Some people seem to have lots more energy than others. But, is this energy limited? Or, are we able to create energy from nothing, even when we are tired? Have you ever noticed that when you are feeling flat and worn out and don't seem to have the energy to do anything, something happens? Maybe a friend turns up and gives you an offer you can't refuse and somehow, you are re-energised. You all of a sudden, become full of vitality.

Being a primary school teacher takes energy, particularly if you are teaching younger primary school children. Some days at work, I am tired and may not be in the mood. In the past, I have found that if I carry this mood into the classroom, the children will almost mimic my mood and the day drags on. I have discovered that if I create an energetic mood, usually by becoming more physically active, the children will become more energetic. They will then work with more enthusiasm and produce better results while actually having fun. And, I have heaps more fun too!

Can you imagine what it would be like if we could be

“In this very real world, good doesn't drive out evil. t

Evil doesn't drive out good. But the energetic displaces the passive.” William Bernbach. Have fun connecting with your kids. Pictured here is Tricia Clarke who is the Co-Ordinator of the area of the Op Shop referred to as the Showroom Tricia has been an active volunteer at the Op Shop for the last five years and has made her mark in this new role organising and refining the large space and maximising the display area. Her special displays for Cup Day, Australia Day and Christmas proved to be very successful, Easter and ANZAC Day will be next. Last week, following a donation of 2 dozen glass bowls,Tricia saw an opportunity to create something different for customers and the resulting succulent gardens that are pictured with her are an example of her enthusiasm and dedication. Bargain priced, there may still be some left to snap up. The Showroom has an extraordinary range of goods for sale. Children’s books now have a pride of place along with the toys and games that are eagerly seized on by young customers (and many grandparently ones as well!). Kitchenware and glassware are staples of the Showroom, as well as hardware, sporting goods and smaller items of furniture and there has been a rush on jars as the sauce and jam making season reaches its peak. For those who still watch DVDs or listen to cds there is a great collection to choose from. In January the Op Shop and specifically the Showroom was pleased help Surfing for the Disabled in Ocean Grove with a donation of wetsuits; a practical example of its purpose to support the local community. Also in January this area was equipped with large fans which have certainly lowered the temperatures on some of the hot summer days and were appreciated by both volunteers and customers. And finally, to those of you who so generously donate please be aware that a lack of storage and of muscle power mean that large furniture is too difficult to handle and it would be appreciated if it were not left.

I'm sitting on a verandah in Barwon Heads on a warm and windless February afternoon. The sky is a hazy shade of white. There are a few mozzies on the hunt, a couple of annoying houseflies and a dragonfly, gleaming, shimmering, and still, like a jewelencrusted brooch. It is mesmerizing, and holds me, still. After it flicks away a quick Internet search reveals the name of this delightful creature: an Australian emperor or Yellow emperor dragonfly. It features a striking black and yellow abdomen, a black T- shaped mark on its forehead, large yellow-green eyes and yellow edges on its transparent wings. It is a thing of beauty to behold. In the two years since our dog Max died Bold Stripped Cool skinks have returned in abundance to the garden, Eastern rosellas now graze unchallenged and Magpies scrape out a furrow and snooze in the afternoon sun. On another day we were surprised to find a big Blue Tongue lizard basking on the verandah. It is over twenty years since last sighting the brilliant pink mouth of a Blue Tongue hissing at the front door. In a recent Guardian Weekly I came across an article by Damien Carrington explaining the global situation regarding wildlife and specifically insects. He writes about Earth's “sixth mass extinction”, the worldwide annihilation of wildlife with a “catastrophic” collapse of nature's ecosystems being caused, not by ice ages, meteorites or volcanic eruptions but directly by humanity's actions, such as intensive agriculture (involving massive amounts of pesticides…and note, snail bait is a major killer of Blue Tongues), urbanization and climate change. “The biodiversity crisis is even deeper than that of climate change “he warns. “40% of insect species are declining and a third are endangered.” And I note in The Age, in an article by Peter Hannam, that the Morrison government has formerly recognized the extinction of a tiny island rodent, the Bramble Cay melomys, “the first known demise of a mammal in our age due to human triggered climate change.” Given this dire situation where lie our 'responsible' planning authorities, our government leaders, our business leaders, our global entrepreneurs? In other words where are our elites, those who have the position, power and money to do something meaningful about these major problems? I guess they are living off the proceeds of the problems, denying the problems or creating further problems. At a local level one also wonders who designs, approves and profits from the building of houses and units sprawling around the peninsula that have little to no front or back space, impervious surfaces, one tree, a few native shrubs, some stones, fake grass, or a water feature. So few trees, so little garden, so little bird, insect and wildlife habitat. So little protection of the land, so little protection of open spaces, so little consideration of the environment and biodiversity! You need to ask who and what benefits from this type of suburbination. Cui Bono? Anand Giridharadas, in Winners Take All: the Elite Charade of Changing the World has an answer which I will turn into a question: why would the elite (who have the money, power and influence) wish to fundamentally change a system that has put them at the top in the first place. It's similar to the vice-like grip of power: nobody simply gives it up. Giridharadas provides a detailed explanation of how the idea of “changing the world” has been hijacked by billionaires and elites whose efforts at doing good are second only to their desire to uphold the inequality expanding, environmentally degrading and socially exploitative status quo. Cui Bono? He cites, for example, an environmental agency chief jetting around in his private plane to attend global summits and talk fests on climate change and social disadvantage, and a corporate guru who is passionate about developing water treatment plants in Third World countries but has moved her manufacturing plants overseas to reduce labour costs and minimize tax. Here lies our work: sustainable food and energy production, goods production reduction, a massive increase in wild & green spaces, and yes, even in your own backyard. _________________________________________________________________

Authenticity “To be authentic, we must cultivate the courage to be imperfect and vulnerable. We have to believe that we are fundamentally worthy of love and acceptance, just as we are. I’ve learned that there is no better way to invite more grace, gratitude and joy into our lives than by mindfully practicing authenticity.” Brené Brown

BARWON HEADS FINE MUSIC SOCIETY On a very pleasant sunny Sunday afternoon, we presented our first concert for 2019. A good number arrived to fill the pretty little Anglican Church to listen to our great favourite JAZZ DUO with KYM DILLON on his FANTASTIC PIANO and his great DOUBLE BASS Mate ZAC BARTER! Zac introduced each piece with some interesting background comments. They began with a Ray Brown classic “Things are not what they used to be!” “Green Dolphin Street” was next on the list and was a main theme for a spectacular romantic drama film. The next was classic jazz “Summertime”, a George Gershwin favourite! Duke Ellington’s “Take the “A” Train” with its quirky harmony was next and then a really beautiful rendition of “My Funny Valentine”. Don’t miss this old favourite with John Coltrane and Miles Davis style of Bossa Nova style of Brazilian music ( with interesting chords moving around) “I’ve got rhythm” with odd rhythm changes—quite quirky and used in different ways. The famous Gene Wilder’s tune—"Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” song was “Pure Imagination”. A great one to finish with was “Bye Bye Blackbird” composed by Ray Henderson in 1926 and it is still popular today! Our next concert will be held on SUNDAY 10th MARCH at 2.30pm at ALL SAINTS CHURCH, HITCHCOCK AVENUE, BARWON HEADS. We are proudly presenting International Guitar brothers, ZIGGY and MILES JOHNSTON DUO performing a range of exciting and varied repertoire! Donation: Members: $10; Visitors: $15; Enquiries: please phone Jenny on 5254 2580. Please join us for afternoon tea following the concert!

“You’ll learn, as you get older, that rules are made to be broken. Be bold enough to live life on your terms, and never, ever apologize for it. Go against the grain, refuse to conform, take the road less traveled instead of the well-beaten path. Laugh in the face of adversity, and leap before you look. Dance as though EVERYBODY is watching. March to the beat of your own drummer. And stubbornly refuse to fit in.” Mon - Fri 9am to 5.30pm Back to Sat 9am to 1pm regular hours Closed Sundays

h h h h h h h It’s not all knots and SCOUTS camping for Scouts. The Environment gets a huge focus, it dictates how Scouts conduct themselves. Whether it be ideas like ensuring that we leave a place as we found it or by only using what we need, Scouts are learning skills which can be used in any situation. The Scouts are lucky to be part of such a wellconnected community and February saw a visit from Owen Gaffney, not only is he an Irishman from Stockholm, but also a Climate Change expert, who happened to be visiting family for a week. Being it a combined night for Cubs and Scouts, we had a wide range of ages and therefore a wide range of questions. My 2 personal favourites, “What is climate change?” Because it’s often mentioned, but not always explained, and “Why is the Government so stupid?”. (Harder to explain). February 22nd marks the day we celebrate the life of the founder of Scouting, Lord Baden-Powell. Thanks to the generosity of Barwon Coast, we spend a weekend camping at Ocean Grove with other Scouts from the wider District. Camping and being closer to the Environment is a great way to practice one of Scouts mantras, “Learning by doing”. Now the hard part......our number of cubs and scouts is currently limited by a need for new scout leaders and the size of our hall in the Village Park. Most importantly, at this stage we are desperate for new Scout leaders. You’re never too old to join the adventurous life of Scouting, even if you haven’t been involved before. Adult volunteers are the backbone of Scouting, who care about the guidance and development of the young people as well as the community in which they live. There are a number of ways adults can get involved in Scouting. If you’re interested (and I can tell you are!), please contact me 1stbarwonheadsscouts@gmail.com. Warren Jackson

Talking life

“Real isn't how you are made,' said the Skin Horse. 'It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.' With Rachael Hely www.barwonheadsyoga.com.au

0430 515 424

'Does it hurt?' asked the Rabbit.

So, my lover hit a wall on Thursday.

life will take you out from the side.

'Sometimes,' said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. 'When you are Real you don't mind being hurt.'

He didn’t see it coming, even though we all did. He has one last hurdle to face - one that delineates where he is and where he needs to be - and he knows this is the final time he’s allowed to face it.

Think side openers, seated core and restorative poses.

'Does it happen all at once, like being wound up,' he asked, 'or bit by bit?'

It’s just that the leap is so damn high. He has been training alone for the last five years, and as hard as any elite one needs to train. Not by running ultra-marathons or cycling altitude mountains. He trains alone while hidden in the walls of the hospital. His high-intensity training made up of sitting in a dark room. One where he can look at what goes on with us - but from the inside. Training happens before and after working his day job. A job that for the last 5 years has rostered him late into the night at least once a week. It’s brutal on his back and just as harsh on his heart. Because while he gives a lot of people good news, to others - he breaks their world apart. Because he does what he does - and he loves what he does so much - he has re-shaped the world he created with me. Now, he believes things a little darker. Bad things can happen to good people and healthy living won’t guarantee a long life. And sometimes an arsehole will win. While he re-shaped his world, he re-worked his boundaries: and so he stayed back later to train harder. But lately, he’d been training with little food. And even less sleep. I was at work on Thursday when he texted through about his wall. He’d hit it, and hit it hard. So now he couldn’t get out of bed. He lay in his dark, searching through the millions of rarities that even though in his career he will never see, for this last hurdle he had to learn. He began to stress more and more because he needed to wake up and train. But this only made him need to sleep more. Yet even though I knew he didn’t really have time for this wall, we could all see that the hit that was coming. Because life doesn’t only come at you from the front. So sometimes life will hit you for a six. Especially if you’re wearing blinkers only you can believe in,

Sometimes we can be seduced into believing that if we do more, we will be better. That moving faster will make us stronger. That training harder and training longer increases our chances if winning. We sync our busyness with success. And forget that busyness is such a silent imbalance. One that makes us restless. And easily brews as disease. If our brains were like a well maintained computer, we would shut them down and back them up daily. As per the directions you never read when you open the box, systematic disconnect and sorting of storage means your computer will work well. But in today’s working world, we can unwittingly find ourselves connected 24/7. Finding time to back up and sort our stuff can be tricky with so much information within our reach. We’re convinced that we need to know it all and have it all as well. While we’ve become very good at Marie Kondo-ing our kitchen:

'It doesn't happen all at once,' said the Skin Horse. 'You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand.” Margery Williams Bianco, The Velveteen Rabbit

www.barwonheadsyoga.com.au

we find it hard to do the same to our brain. Our Yoga practice offers us a safe and sacred space. One into which we can make a shape with our bodies so that we can again feel ourselves breathe. We turn off so we can rest, we reflect so we can re-boot. We are given room to notice where we feel good, where we don't feel so good. And notice where we’ve forgotten to feel at all. Worry drains your mind of it’s power. And sooner or later it injures your soul. But by letting your self lay down for a while, you eventually remember your wings. In rest, you find who you were before life shaded your eyes. You see why you started your training in the first place and then can be clear as to where you need yourself to be. So when my lover was hit by his wall, I didn’t try and pull him out of bed. Instead, I lay down next to him. So I could wait for him to find me. So I could show him the world we created together. The one we made together where there is a light and love - and that eventually good things happen. No matter how dark and strung out the system made you feel. X

Nestled in the idyllic coastal town of Barwon Heads, this mindful movement practice embraces the natural elements that supports us as well as those that are inherently within us. Physiotherapy led practices by Rachel Hely offer yoga teachings that are therapeutic in nature. Class sizes are limited to create a calm and quiet space where we are invited to slow down and look inwards while strengthening and opening inwards. We remember how to MOVE & SMILE FROM THE INSIDE! ___________________________________________________ Our beautiful seaside villages are blessed with endless stories of ocean encounters that leave us grounded with an understanding that this is where we are meant to be. These stories often are laced with tales of the most curious and intelligent of the local marine life, the Burrunan Dolphins. The word dolphin often will inspire the twinkle in the eye that sets a story of how a salt crusted local was circled in the line-up, shared waves or had a pod swim alongside while they cruised the bay with the stories always ending the same way it was an amazing experience. These stories are so important to our coastal culture as they play a substantial role in shaping the behaviour of the future generations toward the safe and responsible use of these delicate waterways. The ocean through summer and autumn is alive, every species of migratory fish has inhabited its warmer weather haunts and every person is doing their best to appreciate these warm waters and longer days. This time of year is also extremely special for the dolphins as each year from February through to the end of April the population begins to think about reproducing. These beautiful animals usually spend most of their time in pods of up to 8 individuals around the shallow inshore waters of Port Phillip Bay. During the breeding season the animal's behaviours begin to change. The smaller loosely scattered pods begin to group up to create their own super pods. These super pods can hold over 50 animals in them, which is around half of the entire population within Port Phillip Bay. As the groups grow the competition to gain the females attention becomes increasingly difficult for the males, especially the less experienced young adults of the group. This leads these younger animals to look for new and more exciting ways to impress the females while attempting to find a mate to do this they begin to take to the sky. These aerial displays can last for hours and can incorporate 20 or more animals consistently jumping, splashing and tail slapping as they try to outdo their rivals, this very quickly can become the very best show that Port Phillip Bay will put on for the year. Our natural reaction is to go and investigate when we see the commotion, if we do this we must make sure we are being respectful to both the animals and the regulations. It is important that boats remain over 100 meters away from any dolphins and that speeds are reduced to 5 knots

Dolphins underwater See page 1 Talking Bellarine for a beautiful colour pic. when within the 300 meter caution zone. Last year the local population was dealt a devastating blow when the respect was not shown, a jet ski ran over a pod at extremely high speeds and killed a new born calf on the spot. If you are on the water and are approached by the dolphins the best thing you can do is reduce your speed to 5 knots and maintain your current heading or cut your engines and watch as the animals pass through, above all else please do not pursue the animals as this is when our actions can affect the future of these beautiful animals. If you ever want to have an up-close experience with the animals, the best way would be to partake in a dolphin sightseeing or swimming cruise with one of the reputable local operators who hold active whale watching and swimming permits. As story tellers, as the standard setters and behavioural guides for the generations to come it is imperative that we continue to bless our coastal culture with stories of the ocean in abundance, being healthy and treated with respected. Should we do this the story of the Burrunan Dolphin may continue to be as integral in our children's lives as it has been in ours, a responsibility worth owning. “Some birds are not meant to be caged, that's all. Their feathers are too bright, their songs too sweet and wild. So you let them go, or when you open the cage to feed them they somehow fly out past you. And the part of you that knows it was wrong to imprison them in the first place rejoices, but still, the place where you live is that much more drab and empty for their departure.” Stephen King, Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption: A Story from Different Seasons

Ah… autumn at last. Gladly yet sadly the shorts and sandals have finally been dispatched into storage to make way for hats, scarves and coats. Autumn. My favorite season. What's not to like? It's the time when this part of the world comes into its softly - lit tourist brochure best. The golden light, the early dusk, a breath of chilly air. Wonderful. Mostly, it's time to retreat indoors. It's time to reflect on the trials and triumphs of the recent summer that seemed to have no end. Apparently small events seemed to be swallowed by other, noisy ones. The fizz and fun of beach weather almost overshadowed the successful fledging of Hooded Plover chicks along our coast. I suppose that event was overlooked because bird watchers celebrated this ornithological triumph in their natural way-quietly. talking about the green building on the riverfront near 'At the Heads' restaurant. It may have also passed most people by that the Lobster Pot had its 25th successful opening season between Boxing Day and Australia Day. I'm talking about the unremarkable green building on the riverfront near 'At the Heads' restaurant. Remarkable though for an interpretive centre run by volunteers and fueled by love not liquidity. It is rewarding to think that some of those curious young visitors may have been touched by that love for the natural and cultural heritage of the Barwon River estuary and even grow into the next generation of marine biologists. That notable opening season continues on a weekendonly basis. Visit on Saturday or Sunday afternoons until Easter. If you have a little spare time and would like to be involved and add your passion for our river estuary to the Lobster Pot's voice please contact the Friends of the Lobster Pot. Please contact us through Barwon Coast. Visit the office or phone Maddie Glynn (52541118). You will be made welcome at any time of the year. Rob Kuebler

BARWON HEADS 5254 2525 8am to 8pm 7 days a week Free Home Delivery

BARWON HEADS URBAN FIRE BRIGADE The time is now to join the Barwon Heads Fire Brigade The start to this year has been busy, with 13 turn outs as of 18 February. We have responded to a range of incidents including a grassfire, people lighting a Bbq on a total fire ban day and a chemical smell in a garage, which required HAZMAT support. While summer is officially over, we have one more month to make the most of daylight savings and the generally warm days of March. While nights are cooler, we can't become complacent autumn can have days of severe fire danger. The biggest bushfire of the 2018 fire season in the Central region began on 17 March, St Patrick's Day. We were one of many Brigades from around the Bellarine to send crews to that fire over a number of days. The fire season will likely officially end in early April the exact date will be determined closer to the time which means we are still alert to potential situations that might cause a fire to start. Help us keep our community safe and check temperature and wind speed before undertaking activities that might cause sparks such as angle grinding or welding. A great resource is CFA's Can I, Can't I brochure, available from the CFA website at http://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/warnings-restrictions/can/ . Or call into the Station on a Sunday morning and ask one of our members for a copy. With one eye on what is happening around us today, we are also keeping an eye open to the future, and seeking news members is a priority for us. If you have been thinking about joining, or have questions about what is involved, we'd love to hear from you. You don't have to be an active firefighter to make a valuable contribution to our Brigade and community. We are seeking people who are highly organised to help with secretarial duties or who have book keeping experience or general aptitude for numbers and could help manage our books. And we'd welcome anyone who would like to become a firefighter as well.

The training offered is very thorough and there are many courses and new skills to learn it is up to you as to how far you wish to take it. The Barwon Heads Fire Brigade is 100% volunteers and we are all passionate about giving back to our community and helping keep it safe. We represent all walks of life and bring different backgrounds, skills, views and experience to the Brigade. Come down on a Sunday morning between 9am and 10am - to meet our members and learn more about what we do, or call our Captain, Helen Wood on 0438 507 273, or email cap.bhufb@bigpond.com Barwon Heads CFA has a Facebook page informing you of hot fire days, local events, community safety info and insights on what the Brigade is up to. Make sure you jump on and give us a like to follow what we are up to! Libby Burnett

And stubbornly refuse to fit in.” Mon - Fri 9am to 5.30pm Back to Sat 9am to 1pm regular hours Closed Sundays

h h h h h h h Barwon Heads Community Bank News The Barwon Heads Community Bank was proud to bring together over 40 community members for our second LEN Talks series (Learn, be Entertained and grow your Network) at the Barwon Heads Hotel. During this round of short and sharp presentations, we heard from Professor Steve Allender (Professor of Public Health and founding Director of the Global Obesity Centre), Dr Anita Phillips (GP and Deputy Director of Clinical Studies in the School of Medicine) and Cam Don (Female Football Director at BHNFC and assistant coach of the Geelong Falcons girls football team).

Q & A with Anita, Steve and Cam

Steve started his talk by playing out a scenario to the audience - What would you do if a highly contagious virus was spreading throughout Victoria. The effects of this virus would reduce life expectancy by 20 years, cost the economy $60 Billion a year and affect kids' ability to learn, their social skills and mental health. The audience pondered this and considered about locking themselves and their families away and doing anything at all possible to avoid such a horrible virus. However, this is exactly how obesity affects the community today and nothing is being done about it even though obesity is 100% preventable.

Cam then continued the sporting theme with inspirational stories about his role as the Female Football Directory at BHFNC and his involvement in founding the female footie teams in Barwon Heads. It certainly was a tough road requiring a lot of resilience, “creative” application writing and more resilience. All the efforts have paid off as there are now 54 registered female players, Div 2 won the premiership in 2018, there are three clubs wanting to play practice matches with Barwon Heads and the BHFNC has three sponsors (including the Barwon Heads Bendigo Community Bank). Cam's aim (being a male) is to make himself redundant and stop telling women and girls how to run and play footy - he wants mums, aunties and sisters to do that. Let us know via the Barwon Heads Community Bank Facebook page if you have an idea or a local expert that you'd love to hear speak.

Healthy food at chats after LEN Talks at Barwon Heads Hotel

That was the perfect segue into Anita's talk about her experience providing healthy eating options at a junior soccer hub day for over 500 players from across the Bellarine. Anita organised healthy food and drink options by adding fruit sticks (the fruit was kindly donated by IGA), sushi and water to the menu and removing the soft drinks and lollies. The Geelong Advertiser featured a story about the soccer hub day titled “Junk food gets the boot” explaining the benefits of healthy eating, only to later print an editorial questioning if banning confectionary was the answer. On the day it was explained to everyone who asked for a soft drink that it was a healthy canteen and they happily had water instead with only two complaints. Anita pointed out that not everyone will be happy with the change but the change must happen.
