Angharad Holloway, HeadEPQ PROJECTS
This qualification is equivalent to half an A level. It is graded, and carries more UCAS points than an AS level.
Unlike with an AS level, you can achieve an A* grade. The course begins in Year 12 and is completed by December of Year 13.
The Extended Project offers you a unique opportunity to develop essential skills for Higher Education and the workplace, in a subject area of your own choice.
It gives you more control over your study than ever before. You have a free choice of project topic. This level of choice and flexibility means you gain valuable research and project management skills along the way.
In 2022 Talbot Heath was ranked as one of the top schools nationally for its EPQ results, with 93% of our students gaining A* or A grades.
The EPQ is highly regarded by Universities
Some universities will make you a lower grade offer if you have a good grade in the EPQ. Even if it is not part of the offer, it can be used in your personal statement or interview to demonstrate your interest or aptitude in the subject.
This is an independent piece of research. You will meet regularly with a member of staff, who will be your supervisor, to discuss your progress and to guide you and help you develop the necessary skills to complete a successful project.
Southampton University will also be teaching you some of the skills you will need. You will have access to Southampton University’s library and all their research journals.

“TH Sixth Form taught me transferable skills along with the formal curriculum, which will greatly benefit me in the future. It is a fantastic community of teachers and friends, a great learning environment and a place of happy memories.”
Hannah
Sixth Formers at Talbot Heath are encouraged to think independently; lessons are more like the seminars and tutorials that students will experience in Higher Education. The teaching and learning environment is less formal than GCSE, teaching and tutorial groups are smaller and there are opportunities to explore ideas in a more relaxed atmosphere. Students have their own common rooms, break out spaces, study periods and can organise their own time.
Our Sixth Form offers new and existing Talbot Heath pupils the benefit of continuing their education in a dynamic yet familiar, friendly atmosphere, thus facilitating the progression from GCSE to A level.
The Sixth Form is an important time in the life of a young person. It is a time when one is learning to be independent while still requiring the support and guidance of one’s teachers and peers.
At Talbot Heath, our Sixth Formers flourish; they receive individual attention as a result of the small class sizes but are able to enjoy the freedom that Sixth Form brings. They still feel part of the school and an important part of the Talbot Heath community while being a separate and distinct entity.
An exciting future awaits.
“Talbot Heath has completely changed my life. This school has encouraged me to be bold, open up and follow my passions and discover new ones. At TH my passion for learning has flourished. It has made me feel safe, confident and valued” Emily
Our fantastic staff are the reason pupils choose 6th Form at TH. Their expert subject knowledge, combined with their unwavering support and encouragement, ensure that pupils excel in their A level studies, thereby achieving the grades needed to put them onto their exciting future pathways.
Head of Mathematics - Joined 2020
What you love about your 6th form subject
Taking Mathematics beyond GCSE opens up opportunities to see how it can be used to model and explain the world around us, to make predictions and also to encounter more abstract theories that introduce wider fields of the subject. It is a practical subject in its own right. It is also a facilitating course for many other subjects and yet Maths is also theoretical and complex, with numerous applications and challenges beyond most people’s understanding. It’s fascinating!
What are you most passionate about, when it comes to teaching?
TH Sixth Form students engage with their learning and they enjoy wrestling with the challenges posed by their A level courses. We regularly laugh and joke in our lesson time as we discuss new concepts. Our girls are interested and inquisitive learners who are not afraid to work hard in order to achieve the highest grades. They are ready for a challenge and develop a mature approach to their studies.
What particular experience / expertise do you bring?
I used to work for a French engineering company based in Gloucestershire, working on the landing gear for large civil and military aircraft. As a mechanical engineer, I have experienced the practical applications of my subject area in the real world. Watching the first flight of the Airbus A380, having worked on the nose landing gear, at the Paris air show was a particular highlight. I enjoy using real world examples to explain the value of mathematical concepts to my students.
Having worked as a teacher of Mathematics since 2010, I have held a range of responsibilities including leading key stages and as a deputy subject leader, before joining TH as the Head of Faculty. I have taught the full range of ages and abilities in secondary and at A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics. I consider my specialism within A level to be in the mechanics topics, although I teach pure and statistics also.
While doing landing gear tests for bird strike collisions, I used to use frozen ducks, fired in a catapult!

What you love about your 6th form subject
I love the way that Mathematics is a world of inter-connected ideas, some of which have tangible applications which can be see around us every day and some of which only exist in an abstract way, but which have their own beauty because of that.
What are you most passionate about, when it comes to teaching?
I am most passionate about being able to support students to learn throughout their A Level Maths or Further Maths course. The small classes in 6th form mean that I can really get to know my students and teach at a depth and pace that fits with them. It also means that I have the privilege of sharing in their successes and difficulties and when they leave I have the satisfaction of feeling that I have made a difference.
What particular experience / expertise do you bring?
I have been teaching Maths to groups from U3 to U6 at Talbot Heath since I joined, but before that I had extensive experience with post-16 Maths; I have taught Functional Skills qualifications, Core Maths, Maths modules in level 3 BTEC Science courses and even a Norwegian Maths qualification (akin to an AS Level) for exchange students. I also worked in IT doing programming and business analysis prior to retraining as a teacher. Doing a PGCE as a mature student with a young family has also shaped the way I can relate to the importance of careers planning and the expectation of lifelong learning for school leavers.
I can tap dance and I love all kinds of dancing.
What you love about your 6th form subject Chemistry can help us to try to solve some of the big global challenges: minimising climate change, providing clean water and creating new medicines. Understanding the action of molecules in living organisms can also help us to understand many aspects our own biology and psychology: why we feel emotions, how our genes are expressed, andmost importantly - why coffee wakes us up in the morning.
What are you most passionate about, when it comes to teaching?
I love all things biochemical, so teaching organic Chemistry at A Level is my favourite thing. In the summer term, the Lower Sixth undertake a project where they synthesise and purify their own aspirin in the lab; it is always a joy to see pupils’ sense of achievement when they achieve a pure product!
What particular experience / expertise do you bring?
I have a degree in Natural Sciences and have been teaching A Level Chemistry since 2007. Prior to that I was a research and development scientist for a biotechnology company specialising in genomics and proteomics, so I have also experienced how science works in the real world!

What are you most passionate about, when it comes to teaching?
A level Biology builds considerably on the GCSE course. It adds detail and complexity - thereby giving a more holistic picture of the subject.I am most pasionate about the interconnecting links between all the different aspects of this wonderful subject.
What particular experience / expertise do you bring?

Biology is full of weird fun facts - one of my favourites is that Dalmatians are the only breed of dog that can develop gout. Knowing this fact did help me once win a pub quiz.
