Towards a new principle of Architecture During my previous study at Keio University, I have developed my own perspective on a new discipline of architecture, which triggered me to further develop my idea in graduate level, and "Nurture" it through my study at Yale University, School of Architecture. While Vitruvius explains Beauty, Usability and Durability as the three principles that good architecture should offer, fourth principle, sustainability has emerged in late 20th century, the age of mass extinction on an unprecedented scale in the history of humanity. With such circumstances, architecture is facing a paradigm shift. My theory is, architecture of the 21st century ought to behave like a “Virus”, bridging ambiguous qualities of “Object” and “Life form”. Architecture prior to the 21st century was considered an “Object”, disconnected with the natural environment in terms of sustainability. In the coming years, the potential of architecture has enormously expanded, due to the advancement in various groundbreaking technologies, which can possibly enhance the autonomy and sustainability with sufficient integration of multiple disciplines, offering a new, self-sustaining “Life form” quality, effectively connected to our living environment. I believe, it is now the time to propose a “Vaccination”: a new vision towards architectural design, to prepare for the world of Anthropocene, mass extinction and contemporary issues which will possibly be triggered by the new-coming 9 billion global population. I see that Yale University School of Architecture would serve as a vital foundation to develop my philosophy, and to further achieve my future career as both practicing and experimenting architect. I am excited to study in a curriculum, where Design, Theory, and Technology are seemlessly integrated as a core education bases, which will be an essential aspect to achieve my academic objectives. I would like to study under practicing architects in your program who are, at the same time, prominent theorists expanding the conventional discipline of architecture through practice, since it will be an exciting opportunity for me to discuss, and further expand my theory, to make use of it to truly contribute in achieving sustainable future through archtiectural practice. In this portfolio, I have selected 6 architectural projects, and 1 additional perspective that best illustrates myself as a person. I am confident that this portfolio is the best material for evaluation, and I hope that I will be given the opportunity to study at and contribute to your program. Thank you for your time.

Decreasing Ecosystem of "Insects"

Nowadays, environmental destruction is crutial in the Japanese modern society. Increasing concrete material surface has led to the issue of Heat-island phenomenon, deforestation has led to decrease of natural environment, and rapid construction led to a crucial pollution of air. The most tragic victim of this devastation, was one of the smallest ecosystem on earth, Insects. This project aims to re-consider the role and function of architecture, by exploring the possibility of architecture to exist as an environmental device in an extreme urban context, contributing to recover the "vanished" ecosystem of insects.

Ginza, the town of Pencil Buildings The project site, Ginza is known as one of the most developed cities in Japan. Since Ginza has been the center of commercial area for more than 400 years, globalization and modernization is severe, which as a result created an unusual dense city structure generating extremely narrow buildings known as Pencil Buildings. In such context, the task of this project was to propose a new form, vision, and function of architecture, which maintains the natural ecosystem of various species, in the restricted typology of such "extreme consequence", Pencil Buildings.

Reconnection of the Ecosystem In Ginza, lack of biodiversity has been a critical issue after the development of the city, jeopardizing the original habitat of insect species by seperating the abundant nature apart. "The Tower of Insects" is given the role to reconnect the seperated ecosystem, by functioning as an ecosystem hub.

Optimizing the building site In order to successfully function the building as an ecosystem hub, the appropriate site was discovered based on the habitat record of major species in two natural gardens located nearby. By analyzing the active distance of these species, the possible interaction point was found in a vacant lot located in the central area of Ginza.

Observing the Ecological Habitat Ecological research of insects was conducted throughout Ginza

city to discover the relationship between insect habitat and urban spaces. The research was conducted by sketching, capturing the scene where micro-interrelationship between insects and urban

spaces were observed. The catalog shows the key findings which sublimes into design diagrams in further process.

Inserting Insect Habitat Void spaces such as alley spaces, narrow Inbetween spaces of buildings, and small balcony spaces showed a significant role in maintaining ecological habitat. The design focused on inserting such void spaces in the typology of narrow "pencil buildings".

1. Alley spaces

Alley spaces exist as a human scale street stretching into the city, while unexpectedly, providing a void network for ecosystem habitat by offering spaces for nature to flourish.

2. Narrow spaces

Narrow in-between spaces also plays an important role in maintaining the ecosystem habitat of insect species. These habitats are safely segregated from human activities.

3. Balcony spaces

Small exceeding balcony space offers a new surface for insect habitation, specifically used for terraces, gardens and agriculture patches in the urban context of Ginza.

Programs, co-existing with insects The programs in this building provides a new platform where human and insects co-exist with a mutual relationship, exploring the future vision of an alternative building typology, which facilitates and achieves ecological sustainability in extremely urbanized cities.

"Two sides of the same coin" Spaces for human activity and habitat for various insect species coexist in the same building, as if they were in the relationship of "Two sides of the same coin". The building integrates two different ecosystem, human and insects, blending the notion of artifacts (architecture) and nature...

Material selection : Creation of Micro-Habitat The material of this building is mainly composed of reinforced concrete, although several walls, floors and interiors use natural materials, which are designed under the consideration of providing insect habitat in a micro scale. Natural materials may also collapse in the future, which creates a new foundation for plants, flowers to flourish. The building corresponds, and flexibly accepts the diverse change in ecosystem, gently offering multiple options for insect habitation.

Symbolism : Tower as an Ecological Indicator Due to the intense destruction of environment, Ginza City is focusing on ecological recoverage through insertion of Green spaces, Rooftop gardens and water places, dispersely in the city. "The Tower of Insects" corresponds to the changing, increasing ecosystem reflecting the habitat of specific species recovered in the city, while symbolizing the ecological activity using the vertical characteristic of pencil building.

Metabolism : Adaptation to changing Ecosystem Corresponding to the recoverage of species living in the city, the building will be reformed adapting, and providing the habitat of such species through architectural form. Assimilate the Green Landscape Given the task to design a public library in a park located in a busy business district, Minato-ward, this project focused on integrating the atmosphere of the park, and the Green Landscape stretching out into the city. Since such landscape has been the vital foundation of public outdoor activities in Japan, the design aims to assimilate the landscape accompanied with the social activities in the park, in order to offer an opportunity for users to interact with the library both from inside and outside, and to propose an alternative model to somewhat "closed" atmoshphere and contemporary design of public libraries.

Determine a cylindrical volume based on the required program and function of the Library.

A new form of Public Library The landscape penetrating into the building volume, creates a symbiotic relationship between the park and the library, while offering a pathway leading the visitors to the entrance located in the second floor and the third. The slope-like landscape functions as a foundation for variety of public activities, simultaneously amalgamating various platforms that public libraries should offer spaces for work, public interaction and play. Light, View, Guide = Window Circular windows dispersely attached in the building varies in size, creating varieties of interface between outdoors and indoors. Small windows may offer an ample sunlight and view for users in library, while huge one's may direct a spotlight on particular activities. During the night, diffusing light from the interior becomes a landmark for office workers, assisting their way to home.

Diverse Internal Space Composition The library provides varieties of spaces such as stepwise reading spaces aligned to the slope of landscape, and terrace spaces engendered by the difference between the splitted volumes. With the combination of the arrangement of windows, visitors are provided diverse opportunities in finding suitable places for them to work or read, while having free optional access to the outdoors through four different entrances, located in the building.

The Library of the City The library shows city scale connection with the existing green landscape, while taking in the public society as the part of the library. The Verdurous Library becomes the public symbol of the city.

This project was a submission for an international competition, which its theme was to propose and define a "Productive City". The project locates in Canyelles, suburban district in Barcelona, right beneath the Collserola mountain, which proposes a long-term city revitalization strategy by applying porousness concept to produce public spaces, greenery and places for citizens to get together. Examining social background and historical context, as the city blocks became more heavily populated, urban tissue could no longer support and provide a desired high quality of Life in the area. Deterlorating conditions inevitably led to decreasing in significance of public spaces and lived environment. Therefore, project design proposes creative (re)production of green spaces, with dual purpose: enriching quality of city life and utilizing concept of urban agriculture, that are both closely tied to necessities of evolving considerations regarding sustainability. Proposed diagramatic map depicts areas with recognized potential for applying the design concept to become a truly productive city; these sites are chosen in terms that explain: presence of public spaces, greenery and the density of city blocks. Proposed design concept of urban patchwork and flexibility, will surely spread outside of the boundaries of Barcelona, enriching the city's quality, giving it an additional epithet of a productive city.

Towards a Productive City - Transformable Vegetable Trellis -

Use of Trellis

Thorough consideration was given to the concept [and request] for productive city. Proposed design argues there is not one single way to be productive or a single definition or valorization of a product. Consequently, freedom and abundance of choice was given to future inhabitant to pick and choose how they will be productive and contribute to the community, both on neighborhood and city scale (or not produce and contribute in any way, as that is a valid choice as well). The design was driven by imagining a unit inspired from that of a "vegetable trellis", which enables both horizontal and vertical agricultural activites. By defining these trellis as a structural foundation that can be modified easily by hand, the trellis was given an opportunity to be transformed into varieties of public spaces, encouraging residents to spontaneously create spaces they desire, which can also be seen as "Productive Space making". The trellis can be both adaptable and extensible, seeking possibility of future expansion which offers an alternative solution towards lack of public spaces, green spaces, throughout the city of Barcelona.

Production System - Rainfall use and diverse Vegetable Patches Previous analysis considering the amount of rainfall in Barcelona, insisted the possibility of using, recycling the rainfall through its prodcution scheme in our proposal. The residential building includes rainfall filtration and circulation system throughout its structure, collecting rainfalls on the roof while using them stepwisely through four types of different production system : Rooftop Hydroponic, Compact Agriculture, Vegetable Trellis and Soil attached agriculture. Mediterranean climate of Catalonia provides ample possibilities for cultivation of various types of agricultural products to occur in the project site. Previous research indicated fruits and vegetables listed, and represent a "catalogue" of products that can be grown and harvested, to be chosen freely by residents. The varieties of "agriculture patch" enables diverse scheme of agricultural production to occur, with the combination of transformable public spaces, achieving the true essence of "Productivity".

Patchwork and Flexibility - Adaptable module The mainfocus point as well as core concepts are embodied in conceptual terms of patchwork, flexibility and lowrise-high-density (LRHD). The design of the building module emphasizes processes of self- determination and flexibility, by offering shared, public unit defined as "Transitional Space" in each modules. By doing so, the residents create patchwork of functions, forms and activities spontaneously, that seamlessly fit together and enrich one another.

By allowing further adaptation and expansion of the units, the whole project site, in fact, can be viewed as a Transitional Space: bridging existing discontinuity between Canyelles city and the surrounding districts, encouraging new connection between the city and Collserola Mountain. Th ro u g h t h e p ro d u c t i v e p ro c e s s o f space making, the residents will not only grow agriculture, but also cultivate good neighborly relationship and the newly developed project site area will facilitate these activities.

"The Form of Anima" 2018

ISE Grand Shrine Ise Grand Shrine is known as the origin of Shintoism, the Japanese original and traditional religious belief. The shrine represents more than 100 small shrines in the site, while having the Outer shrine ( 外宮 ) and Inner shrine ( 内宮 ) as its core grand shrine. Besides its importance in religious term, the shrine also gave notable influence towards the origin of Japanese architecture, specifically noted by Kenzo Tange in his publication, "Architecture and Ise-Grand shrine". The brief of this project was to analyze and reimagine the characteristics of Ise Grand Shrine, and to express it in an installation in the size of 3 × 3m in the site adjacent to the Outer shrine.

The spirit of Anima The religious belief of Shinto stands on an awe towards the huge power of nature beyond human understanding, such as giant trees, gigantic stones and various natural disasters. The unenxplainable phenomenons led ancient Japanese people to believe the existence of Anima, a spirit that inhabits in such natural figures and drives various outrageous behavior of nature. Ise Grand Shrine, being the first Shinto Shrine to be built in Japan, expresses the very nature of this belief in Anima, by worshiping the various phenomenons included in the site (such as pair of two giant stones, the aging huge camphor tree), while reflecting its "essence" into more than 100 shrine buildings built in the site.

Forming the invisible Anima In this project, we aimed to express this spirit of Anima, the very origin of Shintoism as well as Ise Grand Shrine in this 3m × 3m installation. In order to give "Form" to an "Invisible Anima", we analyzed how such spiritual impressions are expressed in the traditional Shrine buildings and events in Ise from various viewpoints. As a result, we found 5 specific essence which can be described as Decorativeness, Continuity, Anacatesthesia, Massiveness and Boundary. Each essence were specifically observed in the events such as Regular shrine removal, which expresses the everlasting continuity of the Anima, and also in the tectonics of the shrine, which creates boundary between the world of human and god, while representing decorative, massive and lightweight quality through its form.

Projecting the 5 essence of Anima The design of the installation focuses on projecting the 5 essence of Anima under the consideration of tectonics and morphology of the total design of this installation.By using Japanese standardized 105*105 square timber, the installation provides massive impression, while sustaining the vermicular form, which reflects the other 4 essence in various ways through morphologies explained below

Constructing the Anima The materials were whittled by our own hands as well as the construction, using the Japanese traditional wood joint technique known as Joggle joint and Halving joint . The construction process initially focused on assembling woods into small units, and to merge each units in the actual site. As the construction schedule was limited to 4 days, focus was put on easy construction, using Japanese architectural tectonics.

Embassy, the home for All This is a project for designing a new Serbian Embassy, located in a nature abundant district in Canberra, Australia. In order to initiate the design, intense focus was put on questioning, "what are the problems of recent/conventional embassy design?". According to further studies, emerging problem of it was its "introvert program", like Panopticon, due to heavy requirement from the aspect of security. Since Embassies should ensure "Safeness" throughout its program, but also as an architectural "Object", conventional design tends to disconnect the society through its architectural expression. While understanding the significance of Serbian community in Australia and the important identity of the site (Eucalyptus trees were required to be preserved), the design aims to realize a new typology of embassy, literary expressed as "embassy as HOME", by positively experimenting how embassies can offer sense of homeness both for the clients (users) and the public society.

Exterior garden -"Connector"Based on the concept as a "HOME", the challenge was to propose an integrated scheme of Public/Private interface, while achieving ample seperation to guarantee safety, and how to overcome such contradiction. The proposed solution was to positively use the intermidiate exterior space, defining it as a "Connector". While achieving safetiness by seperating the building volumes based on its functional character, the exterior garden located in the heart of the embassy, re-connects each of the volumes, operating as a multifaceted space where public events, social gatherings may occur. The garden is also connected to the main road through its transparency of the building volumes facing the road, which represents social functions such as exhibition spaces, lounge and bars. Sufficient circulation was realized by connecting the seperated volumes with a path bridge on the second floor, while on the ground floor, extension of the garden can be interwoven throughout its facility.

Diverse scheme for social gatherings While giving the quality as a botanical garden to the inner courtyard, the existing trees including several protected ones were integrated into the courtyard, providing both the Australian culture and the atmosphere of Serbia by additional vegetation. Since it was dedicated that the new Serbian Embassy would be a gathering place and various activities, it was logical to offer a form that would emphasize the value and quality of existing greenery and enrich the existing vegetation with an inner courtyard. The inner courtyard plays a significant role in realizing various activities where public interaction can be expected. With the combination of several elements in the building, the embassy can transform into a social space where public activities such as promotion events, Festivals, Concerts can occur.

"Six Moving Houses, One Amorphous Street" 2018

Streets in Japan 「向こう三軒両隣」is

a saying that means, "houses on both sides and 3 houses across the street are good neighbourhoods". As this saying describes, Japanese houses, families had a close relationship even if they were seperated by streets. In fact, streets functioned as a sharing space, where people can chat, have lunch, play, and even open a small shop. Streets in Japan played a significant role, as a place where daily interaction occurs. - such scenes, are now a relic of the past. After the age of rapid economic growth in 1960's, streets were reformed due to the huge supply of industrialized houses, which succeeded in gaining order and cleanliness, yet losing its cultural identity, street as a stage of our daily lives. The democracy of the street, is now totally lost.

Redefining the Streets in Modern Japan As we were required to design 1 street and 6 different housings in a 36 × 36m site, and to suggest an alternative to this current situation, we proposed a new model of street, by redefining the street as an accumulation of small privately owned semi-public spaces. These "Cluster of streets" were given to each housings, which were designed to be movable using the railway technology, while providing opportunities for the residence to arrange the scale, size, usage of the newly defined streets by moving their own houses. The amorphous streets will once again, become the property of the people.

Varieties of Arrangement and Usage Arrangement of the street becomes the daily routine of 6 households planned in the site. Each households discuss, and decide the usage of the street by moving their own houses. As the residents were given the opportunity to interact with the street more positively and subjectively, people will take in the street for the usage of their own purpose. The width of the street will vary from small to large, private to public, while indirectly re-creating further interaction with neighbors and pedestrians. Daily tranformation of the street, helps in recovering the democracy of the street, and the lost relationship of 「向こう三軒両隣」...

6 different moving houses Each housings have a rectangular plan with the depth of 4.5m. The houses create an intimate relationship with the streets using deck spaces, veranda spaces and Doma spaces, while maintaining privacy on the second floor.

1 street, changing its form The street in the site transforms everyday, changing the relationship with the mainstreet. It can be a one continuous street heading towards the opposite side of the site, and sometimes it becomes a plaza adjacent to the mainstreet.

Apart from academia, I have devoted myself in keeping and breeding various insects, amphibians, reptiles as a hobby, since this is actually the matter of designing an environment, on a micro-scale, teaching a valuable lesson about the minutia of natural environment. I consider that the process of thinking and designing the environment suitable for various animals, insects, is similar to designing architecture, which can be much more effective to the real environment, while required to offer a pleasant, appropriate space for human beings.

Breeding : the Case of Golden Stag Beetle Breeding, is one of the best ways to learn the mechanism of how various species live in their original environment, to know what kind of elements in the nature are important for them to survive, and how they managed to realize evolution through facing this fast changing world. Finding these facts, are always challenging, just like observing the context of the site before thinking about designing architecture. Through my observation, I have managed to make typologies of breeding methods for several species.

Design a suitable environment for two pairs of Stag Beetles. Eventually, mating will occur during the first two weeks after the setting.

Seperate the female beetle into the breeding kit. Golden Stag Beetle tends to lay eggs into a rotten log with a lot of moisture.

The female beetle eventually scrapes the log using their jaw. This is the sign that the beetle successfully started to lay eggs.

After a month, carefully break the log and seperate each larvae in order to prevent them from eating each other.

Transfer each larvae into a jar full of fermented log. Adequate fermentation offers a lot of protein, which supports the growth of the larva.

Wait for the larva to eat through the log, and to proceed to complete metamorphosis. This requires approximately three months.
