Class 6th Science – Motion and Measurement of Distance In these notes, we will learn Motion, Types of Motion, Measurement of Distance, a standard unit of measurement, and SI Unit of length from Chapter 10 Class 6 Science.

• Stationary object Stationary objects are those objects that remain fixed and do not move from one place to another.

• Motion On contrary to the objects that remain stationary for example train, bus, animals, humans etc., they can move. When there is a change in the position of any object with respect to time, then an object is said to be in motion. For Example, if the position of bus changes with time, it is said that the bus is in motion. Like the bus starts at 6 am and arrives at the Mumbai station at 11 am, the bus is in motion at that specific time.

2 Circular motions When motion takes place along the curved path, it is called Circular Motion. For example, the blade of ceiling fans that rotate around the fan hub.

3 Periodic motion The motion which repeats itself after a fixed interval of time is called Circular Motion. For example, the ball bouncing in the air or earth in the orbit around the sun.

The result of measurement has two parts, one part is the number and the other part is unit. The known quantity which is used in the measurement is unit.

• Need for the standard unit of measurement A unit of measurement which has a fixed value which is not arbitrary or does not change from person to person or place to place is called the standard unit of measurement length. We can use a variety of objects as units of measurement of length.

• SI Unit of length• Meter is a SI Unit of measuring length, The symbol of the meter is m.

• The SI Unit of measuring mass is kilogram. Its symbol is kg.

• The SI unit of measuring time is second. It is indicated as s.
