Chapter 5 Understanding the elementary shapes of 6th Class Maths 6th Class Maths : All the shapes are made by using curves or line. Our surroundings are filled with corners, edges, planes, open curves and closed curves. If we will closely observe, we can easily categorize them in line segments, angles, triangles, polygons, and circles. We all know that they are made up of different sizes and measures. Now, we will discuss ‘the tools to compare the sizes of line segments’.

Measuring line segments A fixed portion of a line is called line segment. The measure of each line segment is a unique number which is called its length.

To compare two line segments, we will find a relation between their length. Below are the different methods

Comparison by observation: -By just looking at the two lines we can say which one is longer. Look at the below lines we can easily find which one is longer.

But at times, it’s difficult to measure by observation, so the need for better method arises. 



Comparison by using Tracing method method-To To compare line segment AB and line segment CD we use tracing paper, trace line segment CD and place the same on the line segment AB. Comparison using Ruler and a divi divider- If we need to measure line segment AB. We will open the Place the endpoint of one of its arms at A and the end point of the second arm at B. We will lift the divider, and place it on the ruler. We will ensure that opening of the divider is not disturb disturbed. ed. One endpoint will be on zero mark of the ruler and then we will read the reading against the other endpoint.

Angles-Right and Straight

One complete turn is called one revolution. The angle of one revo revolution lution is a complete angle. When the hand of a clock moves from one position to another it turns through an angle.

If we will turn clockwise to the east we will say we have turned at a right angle.

The turn from north to south is at two right angles it is called a straight angle.

If a clock moves from 12 to 6 it makes ½ of a revolution or two right angles.

If a clock moves from 6 to 9 it makes ¼ of a revolution or 1 right angle.

If a clock moves from 1 to 10 it makes ¾ of a revolution or 3 right angles.
