Dr. Danya Dr. Danya Tomlin Tomlin
I am from a matrilineage of teachers, a 3rd generation educator I’d like to say my journey as a teacher commenced from around age 10. I remember when I set up my first reading class on my back veranda and I would charge $50 JMD per day for classes. I grew up in the classroom, by the time I was a teenager I could make charts, write lesson plans, decorate for functions, plan graduations, and host Christmas carols I spent many a night at my mother’s job. I think my love for education and teaching found its catalyst there but I also think that I had a genuine love for children and their success that was modelled by my mother and had captured my mind. I didn’t take a traditional route to being a teacher as my family really wanted me to pursue another career But as fate would have it my life came full circle and after college my first and current job was being a lecturer at the Tertiary level. A teacher.
I love my job as an educator There is something so fulfilling about teaching a student something about the world, having them understand it and change/ add to their perceptions about the world. I love how teaching challenges me to have every child “understand” no matter their differences in background, learning abilities and world view. I have to dig deep, innovate and problem solve to achieve learning for all
When a child/ student sits before me I see it as a great opportunity to not only deliver the curriculum but to fit them for the world A teacher has to play many roles in the classroom and through explicit and implicit instruction I help to shape values and lives. Education is said to be the great equalizer, with which I agree, but it is also the medium by which our society will be shaped. The impact of a teacher is unparalleled in this world. I hope to continue impacting the lives of my students as I engage them in and beyond the walls of the classroom

Embracing My Passion: A Journey of Teaching Chess
For nearly two decades, I have had the privilege of stepping into the classroom and sharing my love for chess with students of all ages They say teaching is a calling, and I couldn't agree more From the moment I began, I knew I had found my true purpose – to teach chess There's something magical about witnessing the moment when a student realizes their potential and unlocks a brand new level of intelligence. That look of realization and empowerment is what drives me each day. Teaching over 700 kids on a weekly basis may sound daunting to some, but for me, it's invigorating. I thrive on interaction and the challenge of keeping young minds engaged and eager to learn. Even during the most challenging times, such as the pandemic, I have never taken a sick day

My students are my motivation, my inspiration, and my reason for showing up each day. Their enthusiasm and dedication remind me why I chose this path in the first place I have personally experienced the tremendous benefits of chess, and my mission is to share those benefits with as many others as possible Whether it's improving critical thinking skills, enhancing decision-making abilities, or fostering a sense of discipline and focus, chess has the power to transform lives
One of the greatest joys of my journey as a chess teacher is witnessing my students surpass me. Knowing that I have given them my all and played a part in their success fills me with immense pride I've had the privilege of mentoring countless students who have gone on to achieve remarkable feats in the world of chess.
One of my youngest students achieved the master title at just 7 years old – a feat that still astounds me to this day Fifteen years ago, I founded the CWKA Academy, and it has since become a haven for chess enthusiasts of all ages Over 3000 students have passed through our doors, each one learning, playing, and enjoying the countless benefits of chess I am Ryan Blackwood, National Master and current Youth Chess Director of the Cayman Islands Chess Federation. Teaching chess is not just a job for me –it's my passion, my purpose, and my lifelong commitment to shaping young minds and nurturing the next generation of chess champions

”...learningisanongoing,lifelongjourney ratherthanadestination.”

As an educator with 14 years of experience, I'm deeply committed to the philosophy that learning is an ongoing, lifelong journey rather than a destination. I believe that each individual has unique potential waiting to be unlocked through continuous exploration, discovery, and growth. My approach to educating is rooted in the belief that every interaction, every lesson, and every experience holds the potential to ignite curiosity, foster creativity, and inspire transformation. I like to take the approach of a facilitator, creating an environment where learners are actively engaged in their own discovery process
I love the opportunity to be a part of someone's journey because it allows me to witness firsthand the moments of realization, empowerment, and personal growth There's something incredibly rewarding about seeing individuals overcome challenges, expand their horizons, and tap into their innate talents and passions
Being an educator means not only imparting knowledge but also nurturing a supportive environment where learners feel encouraged to take risks, ask questions, and explore new possibilities. It's a privilege to play a role in helping individuals realize their full potential and become lifelong learners who are equipped to navigate an ever-changing world with confidence and curiosity.

These educators inspire, challenge, and empower students to become global citizens who embrace diversity and champion inclusivity in all aspects of life.
In celebrating diverse instructors with exceptional pedagogy, we acknowledge the transformative power of education to shape minds, bridge divides, and create a more equitable society. Let's continue to champion diversity in education, recognizing that our differences are our greatest assets in the pursuit of knowledge and understanding.

Diversity of Learners, and Assessment and Reporting
In the 21st century, the diversity of learners is not just acknowledged but celebrated in educational settings across the globe, including the Caribbean and the US. This diversity encompasses a multitude of factors, including cultural backgrounds, language proficiency, learning styles, abilities, and socio-economic circumstances.
In both the Caribbean and the US, educators are adopting more inclusive approaches to assessment and reporting to accommodate this diversity This means moving away from one-size-fits-all assessments and towards more personalized, flexible, and holistic evaluation methods
For instance, educators in the Caribbean and the US are increasingly utilizing formative assessments, such as quizzes, discussions, and peer evaluations, to gauge student progress in real-time and provide timely feedback. These assessments allow teachers to tailor instruction to meet the diverse needs of their students and address any learning gaps as they arise.
Moreover, project-based learning and performance assessments are gaining popularity in both regions. These approaches allow students to demonstrate their understanding of concepts through hands-on projects, presentations, and creative tasks. By engaging students in authentic, real-world challenges, educators can assess not just their knowledge but also their problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
In terms of reporting, educators in the Caribbean and the US are moving towards more comprehensive and transparent methods that go beyond traditional letter grades This includes narrative assessments, competency-based reporting, and digital portfolios, which provide a more holistic view of students' progress and achievements
Additionally, there is a growing emphasis on involving students and their families in the assessment and reporting process. This collaborative approach ensures that assessment practices are culturally responsive and aligned with students' individual goals and aspirations.
Overall, in the 21st century, the diversity of learners is driving innovation in assessment and reporting practices in both the Caribbean and the US. By embracing this diversity and adopting more inclusive approaches, educators are better able to meet the needs of all students and prepare them for success in an increasingly interconnected world.

‘The Joy of teaching’
The joy of teaching! There's no greater satisfaction than watching young minds absorb knowledge like sponges, eager to learn and grow. As a teacher, I find myself constantly inspired by the curiosity and enthusiasm of my students. I love how teaching allows me to connect with my pupils personally, understand their unique strengths and weaknesses, and tailor my approach to meet their individual needs. Seeing the light bulb moment when a difficult concept clicks into place is priceless. I also appreciate the opportunity to share my passion for learning with my students, infecting them with my excitement for the subject matter. Whether exploring the wonders of science, diving into the world of literature, or uncovering the secrets of history, I strive to make each lesson an engaging and memorable experience. But teaching isn't just about imparting knowledge; it's also about fostering a sense of community and belonging in the classroom. Orinthia Blake
I take pride in creating a safe and inclusive environment where my students feel comfortable expressing themselves, sharing their thoughts and ideas, and supporting one another. As I watch my students grow and evolve over the years, I'm reminded of the profound impact teaching has on shaping young lives It's a privilege to play a role in their educational journey, and their potential and promise constantly inspire me. Teaching is more than just a job – a calling, a passion, and a labor of love. I feel grateful every day to do what I love, be inspired, and learn from my students in equal measure.

Where passion meets purpose
It started with ‘playing school’

It all began in the embrace of my extended family, where weekends were filled with assisting siblings and cousins with their homework. Soon, our play evolved into "playing school," with me assuming the role of teacher. Amidst the laughter and learning, I noticed my sister's struggles, her pace differing from the others, and my heart broke. Frustration and impatience gave way to a solemn vow: to advocate for marginalized students and ensure they reach their fullest potential. Now, after seven years as a trained educator, teaching remains both a gift and a challenge.
Sadly, the system often leaves teachers powerless, burdened with immense responsibility but lacking support, while students unwittingly bear the brunt of this imbalance. What I love most about my craft is its liberating power to reach students from diverse backgrounds and circumstances. From those with challenging upbringings to those seemingly unaware of their potential, teaching allows me to connect with and inspire each one. Most rewarding is the chance to build relationships with students deemed unreachable by others, witnessing their transformation and success. Reflecting on my initial career choice, I'm struck by the alignment between my passion and purpose.

Advocating Advocating for Education for Education

I'm Natasha Solomon-Green, also known as Auntie Tash, and I serve as a Class 1 Teacher at Bethel United Basic School. I must confess that teaching wasn't initially my passion. However, a mentor, Ms. Bolton, recognized my gift for teaching and urged me to consider Early Childhood Education. Despite initially declining, her persistence eventually led me to embrace the idea. After exploring various career paths, including entrepreneurship, I came to a conviction that working with children was my calling. Encouraged by my teacher, Mrs. Panton, I pursued the Heart Trust NCTVET course in Early Childhood Development, completing levels 1 & 2 successfully. Subsequently, I expanded my skills by undertaking level 3, a crucial requirement for Early Childhood Institutions.
In 2010, my journey as a caregiver commenced with my first job at a nursery, and I've remained committed to the education sector ever since. Though challenging, the experience has been immensely rewarding, as I am entrusted with the care and nurturing of young minds. Witnessing the growth and development of children brings me immense joy, knowing that I have the opportunity to impart valuable lessons that they may one day pass on to others. Children are indeed a blessing, and working alongside them is a privilege I cherish deeply. My experiences with them have enriched my life in countless ways, serving as a constant source of motivation and inspiration as I continue to advocate for their growth and well-being.
Math and Math and Math and Technology Technology Technology
Keneisha Huslin
As I celebrate eight incredible years of teaching, I am filled with joy and gratitude. Eight years have passed since I first stepped into a classroom, and it's hard to believe how much I've grown and learned. What I love most about my journey as an educator is the opportunity to share my passion for math with my students. There's something extraordinary about watching young minds grasp complex concepts and seeing the light bulb moment when they realize how math applies to their world I also love the creativity and challenge that comes with teaching. Every day is different, and I'm constantly seeking new ways to engage and inspire my students by putting fun into learning. Whether it's developing innovative lesson plans, collaborating with colleagues, or simply listening to my students' stories, I find joy in the variety and unpredictability of this profession. I especially love teaching math because it allows me to connect abstract concepts to real-world scenarios.

My students light up when they see how math is used daily Seeing them become curious and engaged is terrific; asking thoughtful questions and exploring practical applications is impressive. Moments like these remind me why I became a teacher in the first place. As I reflect on the past eight years, I am proud of my impact on my students' lives. I've seen them grow from hesitant learners to confident problem-solvers, and it's been an honor to be a part of their journey. I'm grateful for the opportunity to continue inspiring and educating young minds, and I can't wait to see what the future holds for my students. Teaching math has been a dream come true, and I feel lucky to be able to do what I love every day.

My journey to becoming an educator wasn't without its challenges Growing up in poverty, obtaining a tertiary education was a formidable task Having to work and study wasn't easy. It was filled with ups and downs, sleepless nights, and tears, but I did it! I live to tell the tales to everyone who is going through what I went through that they, too, can do it. I find it a privilege and use it as an opportunity to motivate people. The connection I forge with my students, and the opportunity to shape their futures are what drive me to excel in this field. It's a privilege to witness the transformative power of education firsthand and to be a guiding light in the lives of those I teach.

Since childhood, I've naturally been inclined to guide others, often finding joy in sharing knowledge. It was from that passion I knew I would, and I always said I wanted to become a teacher; and look, I am one of the few persons who became what they said they wanted to be It's just what I do best! I don't see myself as good at any other profession What I love about my craft is that I feel fulfilled when I teach and my students learn When past students can see me on the road and tell me that they appreciate me, especially because what I taught them, is helping them in their profession, it leaves me feeling accomplished.

“FASHIONINGWELL-ROUNDED PUPILS...”
Hello, I am Nikki Ann Folkes-Palmer An educator by profession, currently working at an esteemed High School in Kingston Jamaica. I graduated College in the year 2016 at Catholic College of Mandeville. I enjoy cooking, watching YouTube or Netflix, and sewing in my spare time Every day is different in teaching I am faced with new challenges but given the opportunity to be innovative. Teaching to me helps to develop valuable skills like communication, leadership, and a lot of patience It also gives you a sense of fulfillment and makes a positive impact on the lives of others around you. Currently I hold the position of an APSE ( alternative pathway to secondary education) Coach at my institution My main role is to provide support to both teachers and students The students that I work with are the ones that are performing below their grade level. Most of them have learning challenges and or disabilities. Because of my job description, I do pull-out sessions and work with these students in small groups or have one-on-one sessions with them daily to help them with literacy and numeracy. For me, there are no easy days with teaching Every day is a day to be great, to learn something new or perfect what you know. I love that I get to impart knowledge to children Also, there are days when I feel like I have failed, or I am not doing as much as I should be doing. Burnouts are real! Teaching is an exhausting job; physically, mentally, and emotionally Sometimes it is hard not to take the needs of your children home with you. A lot of times we are unable to execute a plan because of students’ behavior or just lack of time We have limited time to plan and do assessments And as a teacher, the easiest part is teaching the lesson, but no one mentions that other challenges we face like having to deal with difficult parents and students who are disrespectful However, teaching is a beautiful profession It is rewarding to see the progress of students academically and non-academically and know you are fashioning well-rounded people for the near future.

“Teaching is more than imparting knowledge; it is inspiring change. Learning is more than absorbing facts; it is acquiring understanding”- William Arthur Ward.
BROWN BETH-ANN
“Teachingismorethanimpartingknowledge; itisinspiringchange.Learningismorethan absorbingfacts;itisacquiringunderstanding”WilliamArthurWard.
My name is Beth-Ann Brown, a primary educator with 7 years of teaching experience It was not my ambition to become an educator, it was my mother, who is still in the field, who encouraged me to attend teachers college. I went with an open mind and fell in love with the profession. I initially wanted to become a spy at a very young age but as I grew, my aspirations altered and so I wanted to become a Social Worker, working with children. I have always had a love and passion for working with children, and becoming a teacher the love became a reality

Over the years, I have managed to interact with children from a variety of backgrounds, and I must say it has been an eye-opening experience. It has not been an easy journey but a very rewarding one. From lesson planning, arranging and creatively preparing a classroom that is conducive to learning, writing intervention plans, and action plans, marking and preparing worksheets, to setting up subject-based corners. To me teaching is not just only about imparting knowledge and facilitating learning, but it's also about catering to the holistic development of our students We are their family away from home And so it is my duty to ensure that the students I interact with grasp something from my experiences. I strongly stand by my philosophy ‘I can, I must, I will” and so with that mindset I try to encourage my students with daily affirmations. It is my goal, my dream and my heart’s desire to empower young lives. They are the future generation of our nation and so I’m making it my point of duty to not only serve my country and my people but to be a teacher that will believe in her students

“I get to interact with my students...”

As a teacher, I have the chance every day to matter–to influence someone else’s life. I’m usually one of the first experiences children have with school I can take a child who feels overwhelmed and frustrated by school and help him/her to see how much they truly can do–how smart they are, how kind they can be, etc and allow them to see themselves as successful even at an early age. I can take the child who always struggles with ‘getting in trouble’ and help them see how to turn their energy into something positive. It’s sometimes scary how big of a responsibility teaching is, and how you have to pay such careful attention to make sure you don’t miss that one ‘opportunity’ that a certain child needs
But if we can get those moments, there is truly nothing more rewarding than seeing the trust, care, and love reflected in a child’s feelings toward me, knowing that what I did matter to them
I teach because of the opportunities I get to build relationships, and to make students feel loved, safe, welcomed, and understood, I enjoy connecting, interacting, and engaging with my students because I want my students to understand that it's okay not to "get" a concept right now, that it took me years to figure some out. I teach because I get to interact with my students and have the most sincere conversations
We all aim for perfection but none of us is perfect therefore when I teach, I sometimes get things wrong I mess up a lesson, show up late to assemblies, struggle with handling school-related situations but always find a way to correct my mistakes and I’m not afraid to apologize to my students if I got something wrong
After really tough days at school, I sit in my car, emotionally drained, reflecting on everything that happened that day But each day I come back excited Ready to face the challenges and to try things differently I come back excited to figure out how to better connect with my students with the ultimate goal of figuring out how to reach them individually, and where they are, so they can learn and learn at their own pace
“I GET TO INTERACT WITH MY
STUDENTS...”

Inspired to inspire

Sheana Reid
“If they do well, then I’ve done well.”

Driven by the philosophy *Inspired to inspire*, I find teaching as the ideal opportunity to motivate learners to becoming their best selves I employ purpose-driven attitudes and activities to engage learners, to challenge themselves to solve problems, create ideas and express themselves in ways that bring awe and excitement. Teaching is not just a job for me It's my passion Just like an artist, pleased with his composition, I find pleasure in my students' success. If they do well then I've done well.

Sweet sweet teaching

My name is Sarie Morgan, and I am a Grade One teacher at the Osborne Store Primary and Infant School in Clarendon, Jamaica. I believe teaching is a noble calling unlike any other career. It's my responsibility as an educator to shape the minds of future generations and help them discover and fulfill their potential
Teaching, at times, is bittersweet. It's bitter when the salary falls short of covering the bills, yet grace abounds. It's sweet when my students grasp the concepts I've taught, and I witness positive changes in their behavior. It's sweet when the little ones give me hugs or bring me flowers, albeit to the detriment of the plants in the schoolyard It's sweet when I'm greeted with smiles, and parents express satisfaction with their children's progress It's sweet when I sacrifice my sick days to ensure the children don't miss out on learning opportunities.
In the end, despite the challenges, the sweetness of teaching lies in the profound impact it has on the lives of students and the joy of seeing them grow and thrive.
When an adult or a young adult approaches me and says, "Teacher, do you remember me? Do you know that you did this good thing for me? That you helped me to read when I was in school? That you encouraged me to be a better person? Do you know that I am an artist now because of the art you taught me? Do you know that I am in college now?" It's moments like these that truly affirm the impact of teaching. It's the small acts of kindness, the encouragement, and the belief in each student's potential that make teaching not just worth it, but truly worthwhile. And when a former student mentions how I used to provide lunch money, it's a reminder of the importance of not just teaching academics, but also caring for the well-being of every student. These moments are a testament to the lasting impact educators can have on the lives of their students, and they serve as motivation to continue making a difference every day.

An incredibly creative teacher
