XIII. Middle School Athletics Program
2. Seasonal Sport SST Guidelines (US only): a. All interested US student-athletes can take part in seasonal sport SST offerings in addition to Fitness. b. Seasonal sport SST sessions are only offered in the season leading up to the competitive season. c. At least 2 (no more than 3) sessions are offered per week including Saturday mornings for applicable programs. These sessions may be split by gender (Program Leaders will determine this split). d. SST sessions are mandatory. Student-athletes may have one excused absence per season (student-athletes must coordinate with SST coach/leader at least 24-hours in advance). e. Varsity coaches in each respective sport can pop in or briefly view an SST session. f. SST sessions will be allotted based on facility availability, program offerings and the general interest in the sport among student-athletes.
3. SST Instruction and Implementation:
SST curriculum can be delivered in a variety of ways. The athletic department will work closely with all Program Leaders to create the best training atmosphere possible. Each varsity head coach is considered a Program Leader, unless otherwise specified. Program Leaders collaborate with all other coaches within the program, the athletic department, their student-athletes and potential trainers. Examples: ▪ Program Leaders are prohibited from coaching SST sessions in the same sport (except in rare circumstances). All other coaches/teachers are eligible to coach SST sessions. ▪ The Program Leader collaborates with coaches/assistants to design curriculum during SST. ▪ The Program Leader or SST Coach(es) distributes the SST routine directly to participating student-athletes for execution. ▪ All SST coaches will take attendance at each session. ▪ SST attendance is compulsory and any participant absences must be communicated to the coach at least 24 hours in advance. ▪ Student-athletes may only participate in one SST session a day. For example, a student-athlete may not do SST fitness (early session) and SST soccer (late session).
XIII. MIDDLE SCHOOLATHLETICS PROGRAM
The Middle School athletics program is designed to maximize student-athletes’ participation and to provide them with a greater range of choice. The program offers separate teams for student-athletes in Grade 6 and combined teams for student-athletes in Grade 7 and 8. Although no student-athletes will be cut from these teams, Program Leaders will assess players and divide student-athletes into teams based on their grade and ability level. The number of teams offered will be dependent on the number of interested participants trying out for the sport. Due to facility and coaching limitations for some sports (e.g. badminton, golf, tennis), student-athletes may be asked to choose their second preference sport.
Team Structure: ▪ Coaches will assess and divide student-athletes into teams based on ability/skill level.
