Il 50° anniversario della cantina Bepin De Eto traccia la volontà di ripercorrere la memoria della sua storia. Una memoria costituita da quattro segni - la Famiglia, la Natura, la Cultura, la Visionarietà – fondamentali nell’azienda della famiglia Ceschin, da sempre attenta ai valori del buono e del bello. Dalle trascorse attenzioni all’arte, espresse organizzando mostre ed eventi, in occasione di questa importante ricorrenza Bepin De Eto guarda al futuro con una puntuale azione culturale nel presente: l’avvio del progetto intitolato BeArt Space. “Essere ad arte” o “arte dell’essere” oggi più che mai significa riabilitare la relazione originaria fra uomo e natura. BeArt Space intende farlo valorizzando l’identità del paesaggio veneto attraverso la fotografia d’autore, mettendo in scena la bellezza degli scenari naturali e di quelli in cui la natura appare organizzata e modulata dall’opera umana.

Per tradurre in visionarietà, attraverso la poetica meraviglia dell’arte, il valore etico del rispetto ambientale. Entro una prospettiva pluriennale, BeArt Space affronterà il binomio Fotografia/Paesaggio mettendo in scena la relazione della natura con l’architettura, l’urbanistica e il lavoro, attraverso il singolare sguardo di artisti italiani e stranieri, chiamati a osservare e rileggere la straordinaria bellezza del territorio veneto. Per il suo 50° anniversario Bepin De Eto avvia questa progettualità culturale partendo dal territorio, presentando il volto meno noto della fotografia di Francesco Galifi. Da sempre radicata in una ricerca sulla temporalità, sulla cadenza stagionale del paesaggio naturale, contiene in sé il concetto di tempo come durata, continuità e divenire tra passato e futuro. Un concetto che coinvolge la relazione fra uomo, natura e arte, quindi si radica nell’identità di BeArt Space, così come nella storia di un’azienda il cui prodotto è legato al tempo meteorologico e alla preservazione del paesaggio naturale.

The 50th anniversary of the Bepin De Eto winery seems the perfect occasion to pursue the inclination to retrace memories of its history. These memories comprise four motifs - Family, Nature, Culture and Visionariness – all fundamental to the work of the Ceschin family, who have always valued and cared about goodness and beauty. They have previously organized exhibitions and events, expressing a sensitivity towards the art world, and to mark this important milestone, Bepin De Eto is looking to the future with a clear cultural statement in the present: the launch of the BeArt Space project. Now more than ever, the “art of being” implies restoring a more traditional relationship between man and nature. BeArt Space seeks to do that by using signature photography to draw attention to the value and identity of the landscape of the Veneto region, presenting the beauty of natural scenes and of those in which nature has been organized and shaped by human activity. To use the poetic wonder of art as a means to translate the ethic of respect for the environment into visionariness. In a long-term perspective, BeArt Space will explore the Photography/Landscape dyad, portraying the relationship of nature with architecture, urban planning and work, through the unique viewpoint of Italian and foreign artists, invited to observe and reinterpret the extraordinary beauty of the Veneto region. To mark its 50th anniversary, Bepin De Eto launches this cultural project setting out from its own home turf, presenting the lesser-known side of Francesco Galifi’s photography. His work has always been rooted in research on time and transience, the rhythm of the seasons in the natural landscape, and it embodies the concept of time as duration, continuity and transformation between past and future. A concept that embraces the relationship between man, nature and art, and is thus perfectly in keeping with the identity of BeArt Space, and with the history of a business whose product is inextricably linked with the seasons, the weather and the preservation of the natural landscape.

L’opera di famiglia è un lavoro. Un lavoro fatto ad arte, condotto da più persone nel costante intreccio d’idee, pensieri, progetti, azioni. Un lavoro costruito di giorno in giorno sui segni, sui solchi incisi nel tempo da gesta modellate su sistemi mentali inscritti nella tradizione di famiglia e tramandati da una generazione all’altra.

Ripercorrere, seppur in brevi punteggiature, un’opera di famiglia, significa individuare quelle tracce nell’arco del tempo, significa prendere atto che Il tempo dei segni implica la volontà di raccogliere e ordinare per punti un lavoro collettivo. Fare ordine, mettendo insieme azioni e pensieri del passato con l’operatività di oggi, attenta agli sviluppi di un presente che guarda al futuro, è sinonimo di eccellenza. Così si contraddistingue l’opera della famiglia Ceschin, ossia l’azienda vinicola Bepin De Eto, nel territorio veneto fregiato da due denominazioni di origine controllata e garantita “Colli di Conegliano” e “Conegliano-Valdobbiadene”, dove il lato nobile di un’agricoltura sostenibile nasce dall’amore e dal rispetto per la terra.

Cinquant’anni sono trascorsi dalla nascita dell’azienda, ma il tessuto connettivo della sua storia risale a ben prima del 1965. Perché un’opera di famiglia inizia dalle gesta di più persone, dal sapore del loro vissuto, dall’intreccio dei percorsi umani e professionali, dalla trasmissione del passato in profili atti a generare l’innovazione nel presente e nel futuro.

Prima di tutto è un’opera di educazione, che passando dal singolo individuo al nucleo familiare si eleva a cellula fondativa di una coscienza comune nella relazione individuo/società. È in questo circuito che il concetto di umanità chiama soprattutto in causa la nozione di etica intesa come valore realizzato dal singolo e dal gruppo.

A family labour. A family labour is an ongoing work of art. Many have a hand in running it, constantly interweaving thoughts and ideas, plans and progress. It is built day by day, in the furrows traced over time by actions reflecting the mindset of a family tradition, passed from one generation to the next.

Describing the history of a family business, even in brief episodes, means identifying those furrows, acknowledging that The Signs of Time require an effort to gather a collective work and lay it out point by point. Making order—combining past thoughts and actions with today’s working business, which eyes progress with a view to the future—is synonymous with excellence. This is a defining feature of the Ceschin family and its winery Bepin De Eto, in the Veneto territory honored with two Appellations of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin (“Colli di Conegliano” and “Conegliano-Valdobbiadene”) and where the noble side of sustainable agriculture is born from love and respect for the land.

Fifty years have passed since the winery was founded, but the connective tissue of its history dates to well before 1965. A family business starts from the actions of a few individuals, from the taste of their experience, from the interweaving of personal and professional lives, from the handing down of the past to generate innovation in the present and the future. Above all it’s a work of education, which in passing from the individual to the immediate family is elevated to the founding cell of a shared consciousness in the relationship between man and society. Within this circuit, the concept of humanity calls on the notion of ethics as a value achieved by the individual and the group.

valori, fondati sul senso etico radicato nell’intreccio tra vita e lavoro, ordinati nell’eccellenza di quattro segni: Famiglia / Natura / Cultura / Visionarietà. Lo studio dei segni fa leva sul principio di relazione, che a sua volta implica le fondamenta della comunicazione.

Perché un segno rimanda a qualcosa - sia esso un’azione, un concetto, un’opera - che il segno stesso deve saper evocare. I quattro segni attraverso i quali si ripercorre la storia e l’identità di Bepin De Eto sono stati allora tradotti in altrettante simbologie grafiche, con l’intento di proporre una sorta di segnaletica visiva che affianca la narrazione.

Thus, the signs of time at Bepin De Eto are marked by the emergence of values, founded on an ethical sense rooted in the interweaving of life and work and ordered in the excellence of four signs: Family / Nature / Culture / Visionariness. The study of the signs is based on the principle of relationship, which in turn involves the fundamentals of communication. Because a sign refers to something—be it an action, a concept, or a work—that the sign itself must evoke. The four signs through which we will trace the history and identity of Bepin De Eto have therefore been translated into four symbols, visual signposts to accompany our narrative.

di segno, ossia instillandovi l’apertura al futuro nella ricerca di sempre nuove sfide. Un passaggio di testimone immortalato dalla famiglia Ceschin anche nel nome dell’azienda, che curiosamente è un soprannome, quello del “Bepin De Eto”, conferito dall’anima popolare più schietta della gente del luogo a Giuseppe per la sua somiglianza con il nonno Nicoletto.

Da quest’ultimo inizia la storia del nucleo familiare, con il passaggio di testimone all’erede Mosé, padre del Bepin e, da lui, al figlio Ettore, che ora conduce l’azienda con le figlie Giuseppina, Cristina e Silvia, coronamento di una vita di affetti condivisi con la moglie Bruna e con le loro famiglie.

La presenza delle vigne, la ricerca, il fiuto e il servizio del vino, che presuppongono la sapiente propensione all’accoglienza e alla relazione, caratterizza i Ceschin oltre la memoria temporale,

The Ceschin family has immortalized this passing of tradition in its company name, Bepin De Eto, which is actually the nickname given by those sincerest of local souls to Giuseppe due to his resemblance to grandfather Nicoletto. It is Nicoletto at the root of our story, with the reins later passed to Mosé, father of Bepin, and from Bepin to his son Ettore, who now runs the business with his daughters Giuseppina, Cristina and Silvia and their families, the crowing achievement of a joyful life with his wife Bruna.

The presence of vineyards, research, intuition and the serving of wine, which require an aptitude for interaction and hospitality, has defined the

ma si afferma con certezza in queste quattro generazioni. Il perno sul quale si fa leva è il 1965 – che dà i natali al festeggiamento di questo cinquantesimo anniversario – quando i genitori di Ettore acquistano un rustico con annesso terreno dove oggi sorgono i vigneti di fronte alla Cantina. Qui si rinnova una storia già annunciata, anche nel nome, perché nel rustico i Ceschin trasferiscono la trattoria di famiglia che distava di un paio di chilometri e già era nota come “Bepin De Eto”. La gestisce, fino alla chiusura nel 2000, la madre di Ettore, Alice, eccellente cuoca, di pari passo con il marito Giuseppe, che riscontrando il successo dei vini meticolosamente ricercati e acquistati per i clienti del ristorante, decide di produrli sulla sua proprietà.

Il diciassettenne Ettore - che sin dalla tenera età aveva respirato la calorosa prassi dell’accoglienza e della scelta qualitativa accompagnando il padre nell’acquisto del vino - inizia ad affiancarlo nella realizzazione delle vigne e, in seguito, nella costruzione della cantina. Entra così nel vivo dell’opera di famiglia, con un forte e radicato bagaglio esperienziale, animato da un valore fondamentale nel passaggio del testimone: la fiducia, quella riposta in lui dal padre, che al figlio ventenne affida già la responsabilità della scelta nell’acquisto del suo primo vigneto, quello di Rua. Nata per produrre i vini da servire nel ristorante, dove a cavallo fra gli anni ’60 e ’70 si consumavano e vendevano circa 40.000 bottiglie l’anno, la cantina diviene crogiolo di tutto il sapere di famiglia respirato da Ettore nel seguire le gesta del padre. Dalla visita ai vigneti, dove capisce l’importanza della posizione delle piante e le diverse caratteristiche del suolo necessarie alla produzione di differenti vini; alla frequentazione delle cantine, dove affina il senso della vista, nella ricerca dell’ordine,

Ceschin family since time immemorial, but has truly taken hold in these four generations. The turning point was 1965—the reason we now celebrate this 50th anniversary—when Ettore’s parents bought a cottage with a plot of land, where the vineyards now grow opposite the wine cellar. The story taking root here was not entirely new, even in name, as the Ceschins moved the family trattoria to the cottage from its location a few kilometers away, where it was already known as “Bepin De Eto.” Until it closed in 2000 the trattoria was run by Ettore’s mother Alice, an excellent cook, along with her husband Giuseppe. Noting the success of the wines meticulously selected and purchased for his dining customers, Giuseppe decided to make wine himself on his property.

Seventeen-year-old Ettore, who from a tender age had breathed the air of hospitality and discernment as he accompanied his father on wine buying expeditions, began to help him plant the vineyards and later to build the wine cellar. He is now in the thick of the business, with his long-standing, practically inborn experience, and is motivated by a fundamental value: the confidence his father showed him by trusting a 20-year-old son with the responsibility of purchasing the first vineyard, in Rua. Created to produce the wines served in the restaurant, where in the late 1960s and early ‘70s about 40,000 bottles were sold each year, the wine cellar soon became the crux of all the family knowledge Ettore had taken in while following in his father’s footsteps. From his trips to the vineyards, where he learned the importance of how vines are positioned and the various soil characteristics needed to produce

e dell’olfatto, nella percezione della pulizia, di quel “buon odore di pulito” che si stempera con il profumo del vino, Ettore sviluppa e coltiva il principio del bello e del buono.

Nasce quell’idea di “qualità” che allerta all’unisono tutti i sensi, circoscrivendo però il valore emozionale della sinestesia entro il concetto di rigore. Nella sua mente si sviluppa un binomio: “il vino buono nasce da una vigna bella e da una cantina ordinata”. Bellezza e rigore sono generati dal rispetto, per le identità, le appartenenze e le cose, complessivamente radicate nella relazione fra uomo e natura.

La NATURA che comprende il lavoro umano e, nello specifico, l’opera di una famiglia che produce vino, è uno spazio ordinato dall’intervento dell’uomo, che agisce nell’ambiente per guidare il suo naturale processo di generazione fruttifera. Questa

The resulting concept of “quality” is one that alerts all the senses in unison, while containing the emotional reach of this synesthesia within a certain discipline. In Ettore’s mind he developed this maxim: “good wine comes from a beautiful vineyard and an orderly cellar.”

Beauty and discipline are the products of respect: for identities, kinships and things, all rooted in the relationship between man and nature.

natura è un riquadro che simboleggia il terreno, sul quale si erge la verticalità dei filari delle vigne. È un paesaggio in cui si respira la profonda relazione fra natura e cultura perché la cura e l’ordinamento delle piante è un lavoro “fatto ad arte” dall’homo faber, che facendo crea. Qui siamo sul terreno in cui dialogano natura e artificio. Un dialogo sempre esistito, ma che acquisisce maggior forza e importanza in questo nostro mondo così profondamente artificializzato e virtualizzato dalle odierne scoperte e innovazioni scientifiche, biologiche, informatiche; un mondo tuttavia ancora fortunatamente immerso nel verde, ancora ammantato dal valore mitico e rituale.

Perché la coltivazione, così com’è sempre stata condotta dai Ceschin, implica il recupero dell’ancestrale rapporto uomo/natura, fondato sulla ritualità. Con il significato

The dialogue has always existed, but it’s grown stronger and more important in today’s world, so profoundly artificialized and virtualized by modern discoveries and innovations in science, biology, and information technology; a world, however, that luckily is still awash in green, still cloaked

di “ordine” e “misura”, il rito indica le rigorose norme che in passato regolavano lo svolgimento di determinate azioni, quando la misura del fare era dettata dal naturale flusso dell’esistenza, stava dentro il susseguirsi delle stagioni.

Una misura che Ettore prende da subito sul terreno veneto, perché quando un uomo assomiglia alla propria terra e si nutre della sua potenza, essa diventa parte di lui. Si conoscono, comunicano e assieme generano frutti carichi dell’autentico colore della passione, quella che vibra nello sguardo lungimirante e che si legge nelle mani. Mani che affondano nella terra, che conoscono ogni pianta di ogni vigneto. Pianta che va rispettata e al contempo gestita in modo rigoroso, guidata nella crescita, sostenuta e amata, come facevano i contadini di altri tempi. I tempi in cui Ettore Ceschin, insieme al padre Giuseppe, visitava i vigneti migliori, prima di scegliere e comprare il vino per il loro ristorante.

Il successo nella ristorazione li ha condotti alla creazione della Cantina, così come l’amore per la propria terra è sfociato nella coltivazione delle viti, attraverso una puntuale analisi delle qualità e delle singolari proprietà del territorio, che i Ceschin hanno somatizzato nel loro fare quotidiano, rispettosamente teso fra natura e cultura.

Il vocabolo CULTURA deriva dal latino coleˇre, che significa propriamente “coltivare” e quindi si riferisce alla coltura di un terreno, portandosi appresso il concetto di qualità, indispensabile alla nascita e alla crescita di ogni buon frutto. Il senso più esteso di tale parola conduce dalla relazione dei Ceschin con il contesto naturale all’identità della loro opera di famiglia. La cultura, infatti, è l’insieme dello studio e dell’esperienza acquisite da un individuo e rielaborate con un personale e profondo

in myth and mystique. Because farming, as the Ceschins have always practiced it, means reviving the ancestral relationship between man and nature and its foundation in ritual observance. In the sense of “order” and “moderation,” a ritual stands for the strict rules that used to govern certain actions, when what to do was dictated by the natural flow of existence and fit within the progression of the seasons.

Here in the Veneto region, Ettore took easily to this rhythm: when a man resembles his land and is nourished by its potency, it becomes a part of him. They understand each other, communicate, and together produce fruits laden with the genuine colour of passion, a passion that flickers in his farsighted gaze and is evident in the hands that dig into the earth, that know each vine of every vineyard. Vines that deserve respect yet need to be deftly managed, guided in their growth, supported and loved, as farmers once did in times gone by: when Ettore Ceschin and his father Giuseppe would make the rounds of the best vineyards before choosing a wine for their restaurant.

Their success in the restaurant business convinced them to create their own winery, just as a love for their land blossomed into the cultivation of grapes, through careful analysis of the characteristics and unique properties of the terroir that the Ceschins somatized in their everyday doings—respectfully balanced between nature and culture.

The word CULTURE derives from the Latin coleˇre or “cultivate” and thus refers to the cultivation of land while incorporating the concept of quality, which is crucial for the birth and development of all good fruits. In its broader meaning, the word spans from the Ceschins’ relationship with the natural environment to the identity of their

ripensamento che converte le nozioni in elemento costitutivo della sua personalità morale, della sua spiritualità e del suo gusto estetico, nella consapevolezza di sé e del proprio mondo. Una presa di coscienza, questa, alimentata da tutti i valori raccolti nei precedenti segni individuati nella Famiglia e nella Natura, che nello specifico della conoscenza culturale conducono all’importante capitolo dell’aggiornamento tecnologico. È in tale orizzonte, di frontale e diretto dialogo fra natura e cultura, che si gioca una delle più intriganti sfide. Da un lato, infatti, si riafferma la ferrea volontà di rispettare l’ambiente, con i suoi intrinseci ritmi meteorologici e stagionali, entro il profilo di un equilibrio ancestrale; dall’altro lato, invece, vi è la costante tensione all’innovazione, all’aggiornamento.

Dopo i primi vini con i fondi, perché fermentati in bottiglia,

It’s a realization, fed by the values encompassed by Family and Nature, which in the specific realm of cultural awareness lead to the important chapter of technological progress.

That horizon, where nature and culture engage in direct frontal dialogue, is the setting for one of the most intriguing challenges of our time. In one corner is the ironclad will to respect the environment, with its intrinsic rhythms of weather and seasons, within the profile of an ancestral equilibrium; in the other is the constant drive for innovation and progress. Moving on from his first

negli anni Ottanta Ettore avvia la prassi del filtraggio, mentre al decennio precedente risalgono i sistemi di raffreddamento. Mantenendo fede alla medesima metodologia operativa, nel 1988 amplia l’azienda dotandola degli ultimi ritrovati tecnologici, consapevole che le strutture di automazione migliorano il controllo del processo produttivo senza nulla togliere alla sua originarietà. Un esempio è dato dalla follatura, che consiste nell’affondare costantemente le bucce nel vino durante il processo di fermentazione e che ora, invece di coinvolgere l’azione di un addetto munito di utensile, si risolve con l’utilizzo di pale azionate meccanicamente.

La via intrapresa si fonda sul principio che la tecnologia più avanzata oggi consente di produrre ottimo vino nel pieno rispetto delle norme naturali, senza alterare le attente e scrupolose cure applicate in vigneto. Sono gli anni in cui da Bepin De Eto, sul fronte della coltivazione primeggia il principio della qualità sulla quantità. L’idea è che la pianta può dare il meglio di sé se il numero di frutti è minore. La prassi è di passare da 60 a 8 gemme, in piante più basse, che con un minore carico di uva necessitano di una minore quantità d’acqua. Per i vini di altissima qualità si passa addirittura a un ulteriore diradamento, progettando piante con un numero ancora inferiore di frutti; in ogni caso facendo sempre attenzione alle modalità di potatura, finalizzate a indurre un’ottimale crescita della vite, senza provocare ferite che la possano danneggiare.

Costruire e sviluppare un progetto – in questo caso teso fra natura e cultura – dandogli lo spessore di un’opera di famiglia, significa dotarsi anche di una buona immaginazione perché il verbo “progettare” indica un’attività costantemente in bilico tra presente e futuro. Si tratta di gettare

Staying faithful to this method, in 1988 he expanded the business by adding the latest technological achievements, on the conviction that automated facilities improve control over the winemaking process without detriment to its authenticity. One example is fulling, the constant submersion of grape skins in the wine during the fermentation process, which instead of being performed by human with tool could now be handled by mechanically rotated blades.

The family acted on the philosophy that cutting-edge technology made it possible to produce excellent wines while fully respecting natural laws and leaving the scrupulous care of the vineyards untouched.

These were the years when Bepin De Eto, in terms of grape growing, began to prize quality over quantity; the notion that a vine can perform at its best if the grapes it produces are fewer. The practice was to reduce from sixty to eight buds, on shorter vines, whose lighter load would require less water. For the best quality wines the vines were thinned even further, to produce even fewer grapes, while ensuring that the pruning technique would encourage optimal growth and always avoid wounding the plant.

To build and develop a plan—in this case balanced tightly between nature and culture—while giving it the weight of a family endeavor takes a strong imagination; the verb “to plan” suggests an activity constantly poised between present and future. It means laying down a bridge between an idea and its achievement.

And this is where VISIONARINESS comes in: the fourth sign

Affiora così la VISIONARIETÀ: quarto segno nell’identità di Bepin De Eto, che Ettore Ceschin ha sviluppato sin da bambino, quando accompagnando il padre nella visita dei vigneti, guardava oltre, prefigurando già i viaggi degli anni successivi, in Sudafrica a vedere le prime macchine per la raccolta e, ora, in giro per il mondo lungo la via dei vigneti, che in Portogallo appaiono più come veri e propri giardini; a riconfermare, ancora, il dualismo tra bontà (del vino) e bellezza (delle piante nell’ordinamento del vigneto).

Essere un visionario, vedere al di là del presente, tendere a qualcosa di diverso, è stato indispensabile per intraprendere un’altra avventura. Siamo nel 1997 e l’Istituto Sperimentale per la Viticoltura di Conegliano invita Ettore a occuparsi della zonazione

Being a visionary and seeing beyond the present—reaching for something different—was crucial to embarking on a new adventure. It was 1997 when the Istituto Sperimentale per la Viticoltura di Conegliano asked Ettore to take charge of the viticultural zoning of the Primitivo grape in accordance with the Province of Taranto, that

viticola del Primitivo in accordo con la Provincia di Taranto, ossia dello studio del territorio al fine d’individuare terre di produzione relativamente omogenee in relazione alla risposta vitivinicola.

Dopo due o tre vinificazioni Ceschin capisce la grande potenzialità del territorio pugliese e senza alcun ripensamento acquista un terreno nel Salento, dove crea la Masseria Capoforte, che produce al Sud, così come in Veneto, vini autentici, capaci di esprimere e riconfermare l’antica promessa fra uomo e terra.

Il progetto pugliese segna in modo naturale la successiva svolta generazionale, il passaggio del testimone da Ettore - impegnato nella nuova impresa - alle figlie e alle loro famiglie, che oggi, ancora insieme al padre, gestiscono l’azienda veneta. Con rinnovato sguardo lungimirante, aperto a una visione planetaria sia dal

After two or three vinifications, Ceschin understood the huge potential of the Puglia terroir and didn’t hesitate to buy land in the Salento, where he opened the Masseria Capoforte. The Puglia venture was a natural delimiter for the next generational transition, and Ettore—busy with this new activity—passed the reins to his daughters and their families, who still run the Veneto business together with their father. As far-seeing as ever, open to global influence from the point of view of business, science and design, the family constantly strived toward new objectives with a special emphasis on exports (well over

La visionarietà connaturata a questa singolare opera di famiglia – sempre votata alla ricerca del connubio buono / bello - ha dato i suoi frutti anche sul fronte propriamente artistico. Siamo a cavallo tra gli anni ’70 e ’80 ed Ettore Ceschin vuole conferire un segno identitario all’azienda e al prodotto. Un segno semplice, pulito e rigoroso, come le sue coltivazioni e la sua cantina. Pensa alla necessità di un logo capace di comunicare la filosofia aziendale e di contrassegnare ogni etichetta di ogni bottiglia.

Pensa a un grafico, ma trova di più nell’incontro con Renato Varese, noto pittore veneto, che dal 1974 è un riconosciuto incisore al Centro Internazionale della Grafica di Venezia, creatore d’illustrazioni e manifesti, soprattutto dedicati al vino, che conosce bene, essendo anche analista presso l’Istituto Sperimentale per la Viticoltura di Conegliano.

Varese incarna al meglio quel binomio buono / bello che a partire dal logo e dall’immagine coordinata Bepin De Eto sviluppa poi anche sul fronte della promozione artistica. Nel 1999 organizza al Pedrocchi di Padova, storico caffè di fama internazionale, la prima mostra delle sculture di Giuliano Gemma, individuando, nei corpi statuari realizzati da un artista dedito alla performance attoriale, la più forte simbologia delle gesta umane tese alla visionarietà. Produce eventi, come Immaginarte, mettendo insieme espressioni creative diverse, dalla pittura alla musica alla scultura.

Da queste iniziative a BeArt Space il passo è breve, ma connotato da un altro segno di rigore e precisione: il passaggio dall’unione di più

The visionariness ingrained in this unique family affair—an ongoing insistence on the pairing of goodness and beauty—also paid off on the artistic front. In the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, Ettore Ceschin was searching for a unique visual symbol for the business and its product: something simple, neat and straightforward, like his crops and his cellar. He needed a logo that would communicate the company’s philosophy, adorning every label on every bottle. At first he wanted a graphic artist, but he was more impressed by a meeting with Renato Varese, a well-known local painter, who in 1974 began to make engravings for the Centro Internazionale della Grafica di Venezia and to create illustrations and posters mostly having to do with wine.

Ettore knew the artist well as he was also an analyst at the Istituto Sperimentale per la Viticoltura di Conegliano.

Varese ideally personified that combination of good and beautiful, which Bepin De Eto would apply to its logo and coordinated image and from there to its artistic undertakings. In 1999 at the historical Pedrocchi Café in Padua, the company organized the first exhibition of sculptures by Giuliano Gemma, finding in the actor-and-artist’s statuesque figures the perfect symbol of human striving toward visionary achievement. Other events, like Immaginarte, would bring together different creative outlets: from painting to sculpture to music.

From these projects to BeArt Space the journey was short, yet marked by the usual rigor and precision: the transition from a variety of artistic expression to the choice of a single language. That language, art photography, with its unquestionable bond to truth, is best suited

Il tempo dei segni, titolo della prima mostra che fa il punto sulla ricerca creativa di Francesco Galifi, sintetizza in due vocaboli la poetica di un autore che concentra nel linguaggio fotografico il sottile e spesso impercettibile limite tra vero e visionarietà.

Sempre dentro il paesaggio naturale, solo a tratti punteggiato da indizi di antropizzazione: dall’ordinamento geometrico di campi e vigneti alla skyline di una fabbrica nell’atmosfera nebbiosa, fino alla nitidezza volumetrica di una casa nel bosco. Un paesaggio di cui Galifi predilige la stagione invernale, quando la natura appare spogliata nelle forme e nei volumi, mentre i colori, ridotti a una sintetica tavolozza, mettono in scena il costante richiamo al cangiantismo tonale della terra e del cielo. È proprio in questa scelta che risiede la prima connotazione poetica della ricerca, ravvisabile in quell’emergenza segnica che conduce il fotografo a una sorta di ri-scrittura della realtà. Galifi fotografa brani paesaggistici in presa diretta, ma poi nelle sue immagini li restituisce per via di segni, coadiuvato dall’inverno, che quei segni ha messo a nudo, liberando il paesaggio dalle macchie del fogliame, dai fiori e dalle rigogliose distese verdi. Ciò che resta sono le linee orizzontali e diagonali della scansione paesaggistica e le verticali dei tronchi.

Su queste direttrici l’artista costruisce le sue visioni, elevando gli alberi a protagonisti inossidabili di un ambiente in perseverante mutazione; e affidando all’articolato intreccio dei rami spogli il ruolo del gesto, quasi nell’intento d’indurre una valenza espressiva in chiave panteista.

Un gesto che domina e abbraccia dall’alto il panorama (Alpago - Marzo 2014, pagina 59), che lo abita come discreta presenza solitaria (Col Indes 1 - Gennaio 2013, pagina 63) oppure in modo imperativo (Col Indes 2 -

The signs of time is the first exhibition to explore the creative research of Francesco Galifi. The title summarises in two words the poetry of an author who uses the language of photography to bring into focus the thin and often imperceptible line between reality and visionariness.

Always within the natural landscape, only occasionally dotted with signs of human influence: from the geometric order of the fields and vineyards to the outline of a factory in the fog, to the volumetric clarity of a house in the woods. Galifi seems to prefer these landscapes in winter, when nature is pared down in its forms and volumes, the colours reduced to a succinct palette, drawing our attention to the constant tonal cangiantismo of the earth and sky.

It is in this choice that the first poetic connotations of his research lie, recognizable in the emergence of graphic signs, motifs that lead the photographer to a kind of rewriting of reality. Galifi selects his landscapes, but in his imagery they are transformed into these signs, with the help of the winter, which strips them bare, freeing the landscape from the patches of leaves, flowers and luxuriant expanses of greenery. What remains are the horizontal and diagonal lines of the landscape and the vertical tree trunks.

Along these lines, the artist builds his visions, raising the trees to an indestructible key role in a constantly-changing environment, and entrusting gesture to the weave of the bare branches, almost as if to infer an expressive significance with a pantheistic slant. A gesture that dominates and embraces the panorama from above (Alpago - Marzo 2014, page 59), that inhabits it as a discreet, lone presence (Col Indes 1 - Gennaio 2013, page 63) or more commandingly (Col Indes 2 - Gennaio 2013, page 65) or, again, that vibrates with vital energy from a playful

Gennaio 2013, pagina 65) o, ancora, che da ludico virgulto vibra di linfa energetica (Campea - Febbraio 2014, pagina 73).

Quando la presa di visione è più ravvicinata, quando Francesco Galifi elimina la distanza fra sé e il paesaggio, per viverlo da dentro, allora il personaggio-albero diviene segno funzionale alla scansione di uno spazio fattosi pittorico. Dove l’immersione dell’artista nella natura produce un paradosso: pur essendo più prossimo al vero, l’immagine si allontana dalla fenomenologia esterna e sfiora i sentieri dell’astrazione intesa nel senso propriamente etimologico del “tirare fuori”, del “distaccare”, del separare una parte dal suo contesto. Gli alberi sono ancora riconoscibili come tali, ma non figurano più come curiosi protagonisti di una veduta perché incarnano in se stessi l’essenza del paesaggio, costruito sull’articolazione dello spazio per via delle direttrici verticali date dai tronchi e di quelle orizzontali e diagonali condotte dai rami (Fregona - Aprile 2015, pagina 69). Entra in scena anche il colore, dato però come summa di segni, che pittoricamente ammicca al puntinismo e alla sgocciolatura (Cansiglio 1 - Febbraio 2015, pagina 61 e Cansiglio 3 - Febbraio 2015, pagina 89) introducendo nella fotografia quel dato emozionale che si contrappone alla valenza progettuale del disegno.

Una valenza che diviene imperativa nelle opere raccolte in catalogo, perché qui la fotografia è fatta “di-Segno”. Un segno che compone nell’opera la netta geometria del paesaggio, prediligendo, in uno sviluppo prospettico, la verticalità in Panigai – Febbraio 2013 (pagina 85), oppure l’orizzontalità nella scansione di duplici linee d’orizzonte, come in Pian del Cansiglio – Ottobre 2010 (pagina 55), dove la fotografia sembra composta da due immagini: una diurna, vivacizzata dai verdi dei prati,

When the view is from closer-to, when Francesco Galifi eliminates the distance between himself and the landscape in order to experience it from within, then the tree-cumcharacter becomes a sign functional to the structure of the now-pictorial space. Where the immersion of the artist in nature produces a paradox: while being closer to the truth, the image moves further from external phenomena, bordering on abstraction, in the proper, etymological sense of the word, of “pulling out”, “detaching”, separating a part from its context.

The trees are still recognizable as trees, but they no longer appear as the curious protagonists of a view, because they themselves become the essence of the landscape, constructed on the spatial structure, thanks to the vertical lines of their trunks and the horizontal and diagonal lines of their branches (Fregona - Aprile 2015, page 69). Colour also enters the equation here, but as the compendium of signs, giving a knowing pictorial wink at pointillism and drip painting (Cansiglio 1 - Febbraio 2015, page 61 and Cansiglio 3 Febbraio 2015, page 89), introducing subjective emotional content into the photographs that counterbalances the conceptual aspect of the signs and motifs.

This aspect becomes an imperative in the works collected in the catalogue, because the pictures themselves are composed of signs and motifs. In the works, these signs and motifs are constituents of the clear geometry of the landscape, with a preference for a vertical perspective in Panigai – Febbraio 2013 (page 85), or a horizontal perspective in the movement of double lines on the horizon, such as in Pian del Cansiglio – Ottobre 2010 (page 55), where the photograph seems to be composed of two images: one in the daylight, brightened by the green fields, the other at night, immersed

l’altra notturna, calata nelle tenebre di un cielo minaccioso rischiarato dal candore della neve sui monti. Orizzontalità che poi si astrae ancora, si toglie quindi dal contesto in Susegana – Gennaio 2015 (pagina 57), con le striature cromatiche che in un’attenta registrazione e modulazione delle luci Galifi affida all’erba restituendole la capacità di respirare su di sé anche il colore del cielo.

Per via di geometrie, il fotografo approda a panorami scanditi in diagonale, come Alpago - Marzo 2014 (pagina 59), in cui anche le cromie concorrono alla scansione dei piani; o come Col Indes 1 – Gennaio 2013 (pagina 63), dove alla netta linea d’orizzonte si contrappongono zigzaganti scanalature sul manto nevoso, che sembrano segni incisi con forza da uno scultore facendo il verso ai solchi del terreno e all’azione del vento.

Questo ciclo di opere di Francesco Galifi è realizzato “nel segno del paesaggio”, da un lato perché l’autore percorre l’ambiente naturale seguendone rispettosamente il passo, dall’altro perché questo “passo” lo riscrive entro un processo d’astrazione; complessivamente condotto in un percorso di andata e ritorno, di entrata e di uscita: dalla realtà alla visionarietà e viceversa. Si tratta di un processo che abbiamo già visto nella relazione fra due immagini (Pian del Cansiglio – Ottobre 2010, pagina 55 e Susegana – Gennaio 2015, pagina 57), ma che appare in modo ancora più incisivo osservando unitamente la collina con i filari delle viti in San Pietro di Feletto – Marzo 2013 (pagina 77), dove la fenomenologia della natura antropizzata già delinea l’impianto del segno, e Conegliano – Dicembre 2014 (pagina 75), capace di traslare all’ennesima potenza la realtà in visionarietà con un’immagine che si allontana dalla resa fotografica per catapultarsi in disegno. Questo

This horizontality then becomes even more abstracted, removed from its context in Susegana – Gennaio 2015 (page 57), in which Galifi carefully adjusts and modulates the light so as to fully portray the bright stripes on the grass, allowing them to exude the colour of the sky.

The photographer uses geometrical lines to shoot panoramas viewed diagonally, such as Alpago - Marzo 2014 (page 59), where the colours contribute to the perspective of the different planes; or Col Indes 1 – Gennaio 2013 (page 63), in which the clean line of the horizon is set against the zig-zagging grooves in the surface of the snow, which look like marks carved vigorously by a sculptor, echoing the furrows in the earth and the movement of the wind.

This cycle of works by Francesco Galifi is created “in step with the landscape”, on the one hand because the author explores the natural environment, respectfully following its movement and rhythm, and on the other, because he rewrites this “movement” within a process of abstraction.

He achieves this by following a two-way path, a path of entry and exit: from the real to the visionary and vice versa. We have already witnessed this process in the relationship between two different pictures (Pian del Cansiglio – Ottobre 2010, page 55 and Susegana – Gennaio 2015, page 57), but here it appears even more incisively as we observe the hill with its rows of vines in San Pietro di Feletto – Marzo 2013 (page 77), in which the phenomenon of nature shaped by human action outlines the framework of the graphic motifs, alongside Conegliano – Dicembre 2014 (page 75), which succeeds in translating reality into visionariness to an exponential degree, with a shot that appears to veer away from photographic imagery,

processo di astrazione dei segni del paesaggio si attiva in Galifi anche innanzi a immagini di dettagli diversi. Si ravvisa, infatti, un’indubbia relazione formale e di scansione spaziale fra i pali bianchi di sostegno alle viti (Conegliano – Marzo 2015, pagina 79) e i tronchi scuri stagliati a contrasto sul bianco saturo della neve (Cansiglio – Febbraio 2013, pagina 81), dove solo le foglie dorate sopravvissute all’inverno ci offrono l’appiglio al dato fenomenologico in un’immagine votata al minimalismo astratto.

Il segno - inteso come traccia atta a riscrivere la realtà - rappresenta dunque il primo termine della poetica di Galifi, che costantemente si misura, come enunciato nel titolo della mostra, con un altro aspetto fondamentale della sua ricerca: la dimensione temporale. Un “tempo” inteso nella declinazione meteorologica, come si è visto nella predilezione della stagione invernale; ma che nel modo di porsi del fotografo innanzi al mondo, affiora anche nell’accezione di durata, continuità, mutamento e divenire. Perché nell’epoca del digitale, dal quale attinge lo stesso Galifi, ritrarre la natura implica ancora il principio e la prassi della ricerca e dell’attesa dentro il paesaggio. A ridosso di un brano panoramico o di un dettaglio scelto e selezionato nel suo farsi per via di luce, radente o diffusa, che rifrange o invade il soggetto, a sua volta connotato formalmente e cromaticamente dall’assetto meteorologico. Come la nebbia, che tanta parte ha nella produzione dell’autore e che qui segna in modo sottile due immagini: in un caso stemperandosi in un’atmosfera ovattata, nella quale l’andamento della luce trasla il parterre nell’ossimoro di una morbida e carezzevole gelata (Prà dei Gai 2 – Dicembre 2013, pagina 83); nell’altro caso (Prà dei Gai 3 – Dicembre 2013, pagina 93)

instead seeming like a drawing. This process of abstraction of signs in the landscape is seen in images of a wide range of different details in Galifi’s work. We can detect an unarguable formal and spatial relationship between the white posts supporting the vines (Conegliano – Marzo 2015, page 79) and the dark trunks that stand out in stark contrast with the bold whiteness of the snow (Cansiglio – Febbraio 2013, page 81), in which only the golden leaves that have withstood the winter offer us a handhold on the reality of this image dedicated to abstract minimalism.

Thus, Galifi’s signs - in the sense of graphic motifs with the potential to rewrite reality - represent the first key to his poetry, which is constantly set against another fundamental aspect of his research, as expressed in the exhibition title: the dimension of time. “Time” in the sense of seasons, as we have seen in the photographer’s preference for the winter and for wintry weather; but in his approach to the world, we also see the emergence of time in the sense of duration, continuity, change and transformation.

Because in the digital era of which Galifi himself is a part, portraying nature still implies the principle and practice of searching, seeking and waiting within the landscape. He selects a view or a detail chosen for the way it is formed and transformed by the light, be it radiant or suffused, refracting or flooding the subject, which in turn is sculpted and coloured by the weather conditions. Like the fog, which plays such an important role in the photographer’s work, and which subtly informs two of our images here: in one case, softening it into a cotton-wool atmosphere, where the light transforms the garden with the oxymoron of a soft, caressing frost (Prà dei Gai 2 – Dicembre 2013, page 83); in the other (Prà dei Gai 3 – Dicembre 2013, page 93) enveloping only the upper part of the photograph.

Qui l’ambiente felpato dichiara la situazione meteorologica, ma traduce l’accezione di “tempo” in chiave di durata, annientando il concetto di mutamento e divenire, come del resto accade in molte altre immagini, dove i cieli asettici e bianchi appaiono vuoti come fondali neutri per affidare la scena all’articolazione del segno. Suddivisa in due parti, quest’immagine, che a tal proposito si ricollega alla prima proposta in catalogo, traccia il passo, in un unico scatto, del labile confine tra vero e visionarietà, tra realtà e astrazione. I dettagli paesaggistici nell’atmosfera lattiginosa del secondo piano si contrappongono alle zolle di terra del primo piano, a loro volta protagoniste assolute in Mansuè – Febbraio 2013 (pagina 91), dove il principio di astrazione suggerisce lo slittamento dal dettaglio del terreno a un visionario paesaggio aereo.

La temporalità intesa come durata, che affiora in molte immagini, sottolinea l’intenzione tipica del linguaggio fotografico: fermare l’attimo e tradurlo in permanenza. Ma è proprio il sottile limite sviluppato da Galifi tra fenomenologia della natura e astrazione segnica a riconsegnare al paesaggio la sua accezione di tempo mutante, in cui il senso dell’essere si costruisce in divenire.

Here the muffled environment leaves us in no doubt as to the weather conditions, but translates the meaning of “time” into the sense of duration, eliminating the concept of change and transformation, as indeed is the case in many other pictures, in which the plain, white skies appear empty, providing a neutral background on which it is the expression of the graphic motif that creates the scene. This picture is divided into two parts, and like the very first in the catalogue, it illustrates in a single shot the ephemeral boundary between the real and the visionary, between reality and abstraction. The details of the landscape in the milky atmosphere of the background are in contrast with the clods of earth in the foreground, which in turn are the absolute protagonists of Mansuè – Febbraio 2013 (page 91), where the principle of abstraction suggests a slippage from the detail of the land to a visionary, ethereal landscape.

The concept of time as duration that emerges in many images emphasises the classic intention of the language of photography: to capture the moment and translate it into something permanent. But it is this very thin line developed by Galifi between natural phenomena and abstract signs that restores to the landscape its sense of changing time, in which the meaning of being is constructed even as it transforms.

FRANCESCO GALIFI

Nato a Conegliano (TV) nel 1968, dopo aver conseguito il diploma di maturità classica, si laurea in Conservazione dei Beni Culturali presso l’Università di Udine. Nel 1993 inizia a lavorare in uno studio di fotografia, dove si appassiona al genere del paesaggio. Negli anni successivi, da autodidatta perfeziona la tecnica utilizzando l’Hasselblad fino al 2008, quando decide di passare dalla fotografia analogica a quella digitale.

Francesco Galifi si occupa di fotografia paesaggistica, architettonica e di servizi pubblicitari e industriali. Collabora attivamente con alcune delle aziende vitivinicole più importanti delle colline del prosecco e con numerose aziende operanti nei settori dell’industria e dell’architettura.

Lavora inoltre per diversi Enti pubblici della provincia di Treviso, fornendo immagini e servizi per la promozione del territorio.

Gli studi classici e la conoscenza della storia dell’arte hanno contribuito in modo determinante alla formazione della sua personalità artistica.

Fonte d’ispirazione per le sue immagini fotografiche si rintraccia, infatti, nell’universo pittorico, con particolare riferimento all’arte fiamminga, alla pittura veneta del Rinascimento, soprattutto quella di Giorgione, e agli impressionisti.

Tesa a restituire l’aspetto più emozionale insito nell’ambiente naturale, la fotografia di Galifi è impostata sulla meticolosa ricerca dell’equilibrio tra luce, forma e colore. Osservatore attento e appassionato del territorio, ha dato un contributo fondamentale alla valorizzazione del patrimonio paesaggistico delle colline di Conegliano e, in particolare, dell’Alta Marca Trevigiana, anche costituendo un importante archivio d’immagini di queste zone, conosciute in tutto il mondo per la produzione del prosecco.

Born in Conegliano (Treviso) in 1968, Galifi specialized in classics at high school before graduating in Preservation of Cultural Heritage at the University of Udine. In 1993 he began working in a photography studio, where he developed a passion for landscapes. In the following years, he perfected his technique, self-taught, working with a Hasselblad until 2008, when he decided to move over to digital photography.

Francesco Galifi photographs landscapes and architecture, as well as shooting advertising and industrial materials. He works actively with a number of major vineyards among the hills of the prosecco region, and with many companies operating in the industrial and architectural sectors. He also works for several public bodies in the province of Treviso, producing pictures and photographic services to promote the area.

His education in the classics and good knowledge of art history have contributed significantly to the formation of his artistic personality. Indeed, the inspiration for his photographs is drawn from the fine art world, with particular references to Flemish art, Venetian Renaissance paintings, especially Giorgione, and the impressionists.

Galifi strives to reflect the more emotional aspect inherent to the natural environment, and his photography focuses on a meticulous search for balance between light, form and colour. He is a keen and passionate observer of his region, and has made a fundamental contribution to promoting the valuable landscape of the hills around Conegliano, and in particular the upper marchlands of Treviso, also creating a major archive of pictures of this area, famous throughout the world for the production of prosecco.

Situata nel cuore del Feletto a 270 metri sul livello del mare, Bepin De Eto con i suoi 90 ettari di superficie, 65 dei quali a vigneto specializzato, si trova nel cuore dei territori limitanti la zona a denominazione di origine controllata e garantita “Conegliano Valdobbiadene” e “Colli di Conegliano” rigidamente regolata dagli specifici disciplinari.

La produzione “Colli di Conegliano”, determinata da un investimento di 4800 viti ad ettaro e da una vendemmia di kg 1,2 per ceppo, si estrinseca, da noi, in complessivi 58 qli di uva per unità, contro i 90 concessi dalla norma.

In the heart of Feletto, at 270 m. above sea level, Bepin De Eto can be found with 90 hectares of land, 65 of which are specialised vineyards, the heart of the land that limits the controlled and guaranteed origin zone called “Conegliano Valdobbiadene” and “Colli di Conegliano”, which is strictly controlled by specific standards.

Production “Colli di Conegliano” from an investment of 4,800 vines per hectare and a harvest of 1.2 kg. per plant, by us is expressed in 58 quintals of grapes per unit, against the 90 allowed by the standard.
