Company, is not one to rest on its laurels, and today is at the cutting edge of technological development in everything from medical diagnostics to cinema projection.

Headquartered in Kortrijk, Belgium, Barco divides its activities into three key divisions, namely healthcare (including diagnostic and surgical imaging), entertainment (which includes cinema projectors and virtual reality) and enterprise (which includes wireless collaboration technology).

Ramzi Itani, Barco’s vice president for the Middle East and Africa,says that the enterprise division is the largest in this region – although this is set to change.

With news reports suggesting that Saudi Arabia will launch as many as 2,500 new cinema screens over the next five years, entertainment offers the biggest opportunities for growth.

“It’s catching up with enterprise and in a couple of years will take over,” Itani said at GITEX. “We see a big growth in Saudi.

They’re opening a lot of cinemas; we have 100 percent market share.

They have five projects that are entertainment projects.”

The biggest of these is Qiddiya, described as an entertainment “megaproject”, construction of which began earlier this year.

Another Saudi initiative that Barco is involved with is the Red Sea Project, a large tourism scheme.

Itani himself is based in Dubai, where Barco has had offices for more than a decade, but he travels every week, most often to Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia, which has embarked on a major economic diversification project as part of the Saudi Vision 2030, is not the only fast-developing market that Barco is engaged with.

“Now we have started seeing a lot of projects in Egypt because of foreign investments coming into the country,” said Itani. “It’s in

In the UAE, Barco has “a lot of entertainment projects” as well as enterprise initiatives, but it is also becoming a major player in healthcare through tie-ups with the Ministry of Health and Prevention and local hospitals in areas such as diagnostic imaging.

“With healthcare, it’s more about a total solution that we put in place,” said Itani, explaining that asset management is a key area that Barco’s technology can assist with.

For example, if a hospital is struggling with a lack of beds, asset management solutions can optimise the use of existing beds, providing a cost-effective way of, in effect, increasing capacity.

Other technology that Barco is keen to highlight at GITEX is ClickShare, a wireless presentation solution that can link to, for example, video conferencing systems.

Logicom spotlights cybersecurity commitment in Cisco tie-up

Logicom is a long-standing distributor of Cisco products in this region, and at GITEX in 2019 the focus of the tie-up between the two companies is cybersecurity.

Among the solutions that Logicom is highlighting to visitors at the show is Cisco’s NextGeneration Firewall technology, anti-malware protection and Cisco Umbrella, the company’s clouddelivered enterprise network security solution.

“Cybersecurity is a space where we see maximum growth.

Cisco has been focusing on this,” said Mohammad Iqbal, Cisco UAE sales manager at Logicom.

“The biggest challenge in today’s time is to protect data, more so because everything that we use is connected, whether through a mobile or a laptop, and attackers are becoming very smart. The technology has to evolve to give that protection.”

Founded in San Francisco, California, in 1984, Cisco System is headquartered in San Jose, also in California and a centre of the Silicon Valley. A true giant of the technology industry, the company has a market capitalisation of more than $200 billion.

Logicom was established in 1987 and has a number of fully owned

subsidiary companies in a number of European and Middle Eastern countries, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

One of Cisco’s key strengths as a creator of cybersecurity solution is, says Iqbal, its Talos intelligence and research group, which is described by the company as one of the world’s largest commercial threat intelligence teams.

Supported by cutting-edge telemetry and systems, Talos is made up of a mix of engineers, analysts and researchers who produce threat intelligence for, the company says, its customers, products and services.

“This is what separates us from the rest of the world,” said Iqbal, adding that a key strength of Cisco it its 24/7 support team focused on identifying threats large and small.

Iqbal said that Cisco “has always been received very well” in this region and is the market leader in networking. “For security, they’re the world’s number one or number two vendor. But in security the biggest challenge is to first educate the customer, to make the customer aware of what the threats are,” he said.

Iqbal says that Logicom has been achieving brisk sales growth with its Cisco products locally, with turnover increasing in the double digits.
