Data breaches compromised 4.5 billion records in first half of 2018

Gemalto, the world leader in digital security, today released the latest findings of the Breach Level Index, a global database of public data breaches, revealing 945 data breaches led to 4.5 billion data records being compromised worldwide in the first half of 2018.

Compared to the same period in 2017, the number of lost, stolen or compromised records increased by a staggering 133 percent, though the total number of breaches slightly decreased over the same period, signaling an increase in the severity of each incident.

A total of six social media breaches, including the Cambridge AnalyticaFacebook incident, accounted for over 56 percent of total records compromised. Of the 945 data breaches, 189 (20 percent of all breaches) had an unknown or unaccounted number of compromised data records.

In the United Arab Emirates, 2 data breaches were recorded with over 14 million compromised data records. In addition, the Telecommunications Regulations Authority (TRA) reported that a total of 274 cyber-attacks targeted at government, semigovernment and private sector entities in the UAE were recorded in the first seven months of 2018.

Despite an overall decline in the number of data breaches, Gemalto’s Breach Level Index data suggests that security incidents are getting faster and larger in scope.

The Breach Level Index is a global database that tracks data breaches and measures their severity based on multiple dimensions, including the number of records compromised, the type of data, the source of

the breach, how the data was used, and whether or not the data was encrypted. By assigning a severity score to each breach, the Breach Level Index provides a comparative list of breaches, distinguishing data breaches that are not serious versus those that are truly impactful.

According to the Breach Level Index, almost 15 billion data records have been exposed since 2013, when the index began benchmarking publicly disclosed data breaches. During the first

six months of 2018, more than 25 million records were compromised or exposed every day, or 291 records every second, including medical, credit card and/or financial data or personally identifiable information. This is particularly concerning, since only one percent of the stolen, lost or compromised data records were protected by encryption to render the information useless, a percent-and-a-half drop compared to the first six months of 2017.

In the United Arab Emirates, 2 data breaches were recorded with over 14 million compromised data records. In addition, the Telecommunications Regulations Authority (TRA) reported that a total of 274 cyber-attacks targeted at government, semigovernment and private sector entities in the UAE were recorded in the first seven months of 2018.�

Abu Dhabi Ports to test blockchain trade solutions at GITEX

Maqta Gateway LLC, an Abu Dhabi Ports subsidiary, unveiled at GITEX Technology Week that it began implementing the first international blockchain pilot testing project in partnership with the Port of Antwerp, Belgium.

Today’s announcement marks the latest milestone for “Silsal” project, which is considered to be the first Blockchain-based solution to be developed locally by an Abu Dhabi local entity.

As part of the pilot project, Maqta Gateway will use Silsal to run a Proof of Concept test with the Port of Antwerp for the handling of international trade documentation using blockchain technology. Research has revealed that distributed ledger technology such as blockchain could boost trade by more than $1 trillion in the next 10 years; according to a white paper published by World Economic Forum in collaboration with Bain & Company. It starts from the realization that there is no “average” customer.

Customers have different buying behaviors and preferences – and

this presents rich opportunities to move past a “one-size-fits-all” marketing approach. The shift from a product focus to audiencecentricity will enable all of us to gain a better understanding of customer needs. More than half of UAE IT decision-makers agree that interconnection is a key facilitator to digital transformation, and will be more important in the next three years

More than half (68%) of UAE IT decision-makers believe that interconnection will be more important to their organization in the next three years while 87% of respondents agreed that interconnection is a key facilitator to digital transformation. The data was revealed by Equinix who is participating at GITEX Technology Week, from 14th until 18th October.

This is part of a supporting study that Equinix commissioned in the UAE to support the launch of second annual Global Interconnection Index (the “GXI”), a market study published

by Equinix that analyzes traffic exchange globally. According to the study, over 75 % of respondents reported it is very important and key deciding factor to have Cloud service providers in close proximity when choosing a data center.

Interconnection, or direct and private traffic exchange between key business partners, is becoming the defacto method for companies to operate in today’s digital world. According to the GXI study, Interconnection Bandwidth provisioned for this

purpose is forecasted to grow by 2021 to 8,200+ Terabits per second (Tbps) of capacity, or the equivalent of 33 Zettabytes (ZB) of data exchange per year, a dramatic increase over the previous year’s projection and ten times the projected capacity of internet traffic1. This represents a significant five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 48%, almost double the expected 26% CAGR of global IP Traffic.

As the global report shows, interconnection is key to ensure full digital transformation and for this, businesses will need to grow their interconnection bandwidth capacity (data exchange capacity). “Every MENA business must understand and leverage Interconnection Bandwidth to compete in the digital age. This will require a regional drive among IT chiefs to re-architect their companies’ IT platforms.”

Securing the region’s digital transformation is key focus for Trend Micro at GITEX A global leader in cybersecurity solutions, while continuing to observe increased threat activity across Middle East and North Africa (MENA), is stressing the importance of cybersecurity for digital transformation at GITEX 2018. The event is taking place at the Dubai World Trade Center from 14 to 18 October 2018, and Trend Micro’s booth is located at Sheikh Rasheed Hall.

Leveraging its Smart Protection Network™ (SPN), the company found that the MENA region continued to be hit by malware and vulnerabilities.

SPN is a global network of threat intelligence sensors with continually updated email, web, and file reputation databases in the cloud.

Globally, SPN has 250 million sensors, processing more than three trillion threat queries and blocking 65 billion threats on a yearly basis. SPN blocked 12% more threats in August than in July across the world.

In the MENA region, SPN blocked more than 591,000 malware attempts in August alone. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) was hit the hardest, with 206,056 attempts detected, followed by Saudi Arabia (192,787).

Email threats are prevalent too, with almost 20 million blocked. Saudi Arabia (more than 8.5 million) and North Africa (more than 7.4 million) bore the brunt of it. The region also suffered from 375,861 mobile threats.

Egypt ranked number one with 87,151 mobile threats detected and blocked, followed by the UAE (79,532).

Globally, Trend Micro’s Zero Day Initiative (ZDI), the world’s largest vendor-agnostic bug bounty program, discovered a total of 105 vulnerabilities in August, a significant drop from 273 in July.

However, the vulnerabilities found in Microsoft software more than doubled in August, from 7 to 16.

Adobe vulnerabilities declined sharply from 68 in July to only four in August.

Vulnerabilities in software and hardware can be attacked by exploit kits. In August, Trend Micro blocked a total of 124 exploit kit attempts in MENA, 52 in North Africa and 72 in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) excluding Qatar.

Globally, from January 2016 to August 2018, Trend Micro blocked more than 1.8 billion ransomware attempts, with Asia and Middle East accounting for more than 44% of all such attempts, followed by Americas (more than 32%), Europe (almost 15%), Africa (more than 4%), and Oceania (more than 1%).

Participating under the theme “Intelligence Shared,” Airbus will showcase during the event its real-time virtual reality (VR) Secure Mobile Virtual Network Operator (SMVNO) using the Tactilon Secure MVNO solution.

By displaying the solution, the company will aim to emphasize the role of broadband services such as VR, augmented reality (AR), and sensors in effectively building and running intelligent cities. SMVNO

is designed to increase situational awareness during emergencies to save more lives and protect property.

Apart from SMVNO, Airbus will also feature its innovative apps ecosystem developed to aid organizations operate in new and better ways. They include the Tactilon Dabat, the world's first integrated Android smartphone and full TETRA radio--all rolled into one; the Tactilon Agnet, which allows multimedia group communication of smartphone and TETRA network users; the TH9 TETRA radio; drone with facial recognition; and the Man-Pack Tactical LTE, a portable solution with TETRA over broadband that offers secure communication.

Airbus will put on display as well its man-sized Dabat, which simulates the real Tactilon Dabat on a larger scale and is manufactured for demo purposes.

Like Airbus, Nokia is bringing its state-of-the-art solutions to GITEX to highlight their key features. One of these solutions is the Smart Jacket for First Responders, Maher Koubaa, Amadeus which comes equipped with modular sensors that can detect heart rate, temperature, motion, and GPS location. The Smart Jacket can be swapped out for different sensors such as body cams to accommodate a responder’s needs. Nokia will also put the spotlight on its Advanced Command Center that caters to the needs of public safety agencies faced with growing responsibilities.

Esharah, for its part, is also set to make a lasting impression at GITEX through its cutting-edge communications offerings. The company will feature its Smart Incident Management System (SIMS), which works with Nedaa 4G network. SIMS delivers seamless interoperability and compatibility (open architecture, opensource components), enabling a diverse set of public agencies, private sector companies, and non-government organizations to perform well-integrated and effective incident response and prevention operations. In addition, Esharah will highlight its Smart Situational Awareness System, a quick and efficient response to natural disasters and emergencies.
