Il n’y a pas si longtemps, à Bienne, un certain Charles A. Brandt me recevait, canne à la main, pour me raconter l’histoire de cette incroyable maison. Tel fut mon premier contact avec Eberard & Co. Certes, le Chaux-De-Fonnier de famille que je suis aurait peut-être pu se souvenir de cette enseigne posée à même l’Avenue Léopold-Robert - la rue principale de la Métropole horlogère -, là où en 1907, soit 20 ans après sa fondation en 1887 par un certain Georges Eberhard, la Fabrique s’installait durablement. Hélas, ma bourlingue intercontinentale existentielle ne me laissa pas su!isamment d’attaches dans cette ville du haut Neuchâtel pour que je m’en rappelle.

Surprise! Fabergé réinvente le chronographe en 2017

Sous le signe du chronographe et des circuits A marque historique, prestiges du passé ponctués de manière ininterrompue par des points forts.

Telle l’invention en 1919 par les fils du fondateur du premier chronographe de poignet, tel en 1930, la naissance du premier chronographe à mouvement perpétuel. Puis, en 1935, c’est au tour d’un chrono double-poussoir, disposant des fonctions d’arrêt puis de remise en marche sans remise à zéro, de sortir des ateliers. Suivi quelques années plus loin par un même instrument doté cette fois d’un compteur d’heure puis de la fonction rattrapante, c’est à dire autorisant la double mesure de temps intermédiaires.

A l’heure où l’horlogerie suisse mécanique se redresse peu à peu de sa violente altercation avec la déferlante des montres à quartz, la marque se dote de racines italiennes suite à son rachat par Palmiro Monti. C’est d’ailleurs cette famille qui, encore aujourd’hui via sa fille Barbara, demeure actionnaire principal de la marque. Ainsi, dès 1992, l’enseigne horlogère s’installe en pionnière dans le paysage attractif de l’automobile vintage avec la sortie d’un modèle hommage au légendaire pilote Tazio Nuvolari, surnommé ‘La Tortue’ pour une lenteur d’élocution particulière tranchant avec sa vitesse sur les circuits. Célébrant les 100 ans de sa naissance, Eberhard & Co fait de cette pièce anniversaire une collection prisée par les gentlemen drivers du monde entier et régulièrement revigorée (lire notre article sur le Grand Prix Nuvolari)

Chrono 4, l’innovation esthétiquement disruptive Décidément, la complication chronographe fait partie des composantes identitaires d’Eberhard & Co. Quand bien même la marque se fera-t-elle ensuite l’amie des navigateurs - les marins italiens la porteront d’abord puis viendra la collection Navymaster lancée en 1987 pour son centenaire - , quand bien même elle s’accrochera également au poignet des pilotes notamment ceux de l’aviation italienne, c’est le chronographe qui continue de ponctuer sa quête d’innovation.

Ainsi, juste après le passage au nouveau millénaire, la marque lance le premier chronographe disposant de 4 compteurs installés en ligne, tantôt horizontalement, tantôt verticalement. Du jamais vu, une esthétique communément admise totalement revisitée. La famille Chrono 4 est née. C’est elle qui reçoit l’infime honneur de recevoir le modèle incarnant les célébrations du cent-trentième anniversaire en 2017. Deux modèles proposés sous l’appellation commune Chrono 4 130. L’un en acier, l’autre en une édition limitée à 130 exemplaires. Nouveau format de 42 mm de diamètre pour la version ‘en série’, lunette à finition satinée, et ce chi!re ‘130’ qui la distingue, sur fond d’une triple variation de cadran, soit du gris, du noir ou de l’argenté. Etanche à 50 mètres, notamment grâce aux 8 vis qui enserrent son fond non transparent sur lequel s’est posée une plaque écusson reprenant en relief le chi!re ‘130’ ainsi que le ‘4’ iconique.

Quant à la version en série limitée, elle dispose des mêmes spécifications mais opte pour un cadran squeletté tirant sur l’argenté ou le noir, autorisant les plongées visuelles sur un calibre aux rouages DLC - Diamond Like Carbon. Un disque en saphir permet en e!et cette intrusion voyeuriste de son mouvement, tandis que son fond s’est fait transparent afin qu’un rotor décoré façon ‘Côtes de Genève’ o!re à la vue de son porteur ses incessants va-et-vient. Enfin, dans le registre de la di!érentiation entre le modèle de série et l’édition limitée, une mini-plaque vissée reproduit à l’identique le même logo que celui qui ornait le premier chronographe bracelet lancé en 1919. Les connaisseurs apprécieront, ils sont toujours à l’a!ût de ce genre de raretés.

Du GPHG aux grandes profondeurs, le Scafograf En marge de ce clin d’œil légitime éminemment historique, la marque Eberhard aurait eu du mal à ne pas conjuguer aux temps jubilaires son récent succès obtenu fin 2016 au Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. Ainsi, 2017 accueille dans son o!re - 20’000 montres produites annuellement et un marché dominant, l’Italie – son modèle Scafograf non plus seulement destiné aux espaces lounges des dolce vita portuaires, mais aussi aux grandes profondeurs grâce à son étanchéité à 100 mètres, sa lunette bidirectionnelle en céramique et sa valve à hélium. Un gaz qui se laisse terriblement influencer par la pression subaquatique ce qui permet ainsi au plongeur de disposer avec précision d’éléments utiles à sa sécurité.

Du haut de ses 130 ans d’une production ininterrompue - c’est finalement assez rare au monde des enseignes historiques - Eberhard & Cie gagne à être connue. Et pas seulement du fin fond de toute ville italienne qui se respecte ou de ses marchés historiques, mais aussi auprès d’un public grandissant de passionnés.

Not too long ago, I met a certain Charles A. Brandt, a gentleman with a cane, and he began telling me the story of this remarkable company. It was my first contact with Eberhard & Co. Obviously, as a member of a family from La Chaux-de-Fonds, I should have remembered the building standing right on Avenue Léopold-Robert, the main artery through the capital of watchmaking. It was where the factory was set up in 1907, twenty years a!er the founding of the company in 1887 by one Georges Eberhard. Alas, my intercontinental and existential meanderings le! me with too few connections to this city in the higher reaches of Canton Neuchâtel, and so I forgot about it, essentially.

Chronographs and racetracks A historical brand… with a prestigious past marked by an uninterrupted string of high points. Like the 1919 invention of the fist wrist chronograph by the son of the founder, or, in 1930, the first chronograph with a perpetual movement. In 1935, then, the workshop produced a chronograph with a double pusher with a function allowing it to be stopped and restarted without resetting to zero. And a few years later, it was the turn of a similar instrument, this one, however, with an hour totalizer, and the one with flyback functionality, in other words, allowing for the double measure of intermediary times.

In that period of time when Swiss mechanical watchmaking was gradually recovering from its violent confrontation with the quartz tsunami, the brand developed some Italian roots a!er being purchased by Palmiro Monti. And by the way, this family remains the brand’s main investor, through Monti’s daughter, Barbara. As of 1992, then, Eberhard& Co. embarked on a pioneering strategy in the vintage car segment by bringing out a model that paid tribute to the legendary driver Tazio Nuvolari, who was nicknamed "The Turtle" for his slow speech, which contrasted sharply with his speed on the racetracks. By celebrating the man's 100th anniversary, Eberhard & Co. turned the collection into one very much in the favor of gentleman drivers the world round, and one that is routinely reinvigorated (read our article on the Grand Prix Nuvolari)

Chrono 4: innovative and disruptive esthetics The chronograph complication is, for sure, one of the identifying aspects of Eberhard & Co. And when the brand decided to become the companion of mariners – Italian sailors already wore these watches before the launch of the Navymaster in 1987 for the copmpany’s 100th anniversary – and when its models also found their way onto the wrists of airplane pilots, notably of the Italian air force, it was always the chronograph that drove the quest for innovation.

TUDOR: THE STORY OF A VISION

Eberhard & Co. Chrono 4 130 Limited Edition

So, when the ne new millennium broke, Eberhard & Co. launched the first chronograph with four totalizers arranged in a single horizontal or vertical line. It was a novelty, an esthetic idea that had been entirely renovated, according to the general consensus. The Chrono 4 family was born. And it’s the family that has been given the honor of representing the brand for its 130th anniversary in 2017.

EVERYTHING YOU WISHED TO KNOW ABOUT VINTAGE TUDOR IN 3 PARTS

Two models have been developed under the name Chrono 4 130. One is in steel, the other comes in a limited edition of 130 pieces. The serial version is in a new, 42-millimeter case. The bezel is satin-brushed, and there’s a distinguishing “130” on the dial, which comes in three variations, grey, black or silver. The watch is water-resistant to 50 meters thanks to the eight screws that hold the full-metal case back bearing an embossed “130" together with an iconic "4."

As for the limited edition series, it has the exact same specifications, except it does boast a skeletonized dial with either silver or black hues, which allows for visual inspection of the DLCtreated gearwheels. This voyeuristic intrusion into the watch’s movement is made possible by a sapphire crystal disk. The transparent case back on the rear side reveals a rotor decorated with côtes de Genève, and the engine’s continuous oscillations. Another feature that separates the serial models from the limited edition version is the latter’s miniature screwed-on plate bearing the same logo as the one featured on the first 1919 wrist chronograph. Connoisseurs will be particularly thrilled, as they are usually on the lookout for this kind of detail.

Between the GHPG and the deep blue sea In addition to this eminently historical, and justified, look back, Eberhard & Co. would have been hard pressed not to make some reference to its success at the 2016 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genèvein its jubilee celebrations. So, in 2017, it added the Scafograf to the 20,000 watches it produces each year – with Italy as its main market – a model that is no longer geared towards the lounges of the dolce vita folk of port cities, but also to the sea itself, thanks to its 100-meter waterresistance, its bidirectional ceramic bezel, and its helium valve. This gas is very sensitive to underwater pressure and it gives the diver added security.

Continuous production for 130 years is quite a feat in the world of historical watch companies, and it definitely means that Eberhard & CO. has earned greater recognition. And that, not only from its hardcore Italian base, but also from the wider flock of passionate watch fans.
