The Art of Time

As the season begins to change, we tend to notice a shift in travel perspectives. What was important to see and do a decade ago, or even a year ago, evolves. Amidst the constant hustle and bustle, many of us are asking, what’s the best way to spend my time? As your expert travel advisor, this notion is always kept top of mind.

With every personal itinerary that we craft, we consider: How can we co-create an adventure that will forever shape your life? Which destinations hold the most value, and which cultures will most stir your internal terrain? And as always, what special touches and exclusive amenities can we add to create an unforgettable experience? These questions motivate us every day, fueling our passion for global exploration.

Whether your next journey is a far-flung family safari, a wellness reset, or a reunion of loved ones along a cherished coastline, there’s one thing we know for sure: Your satisfaction is our greatest motivator, and we are here to ensure expectations are exceeded and every hour is maximized with meaning and memories.

Hop to It

With glorious beaches, scuba diving, and wildlife, Kangaroo Island is a traveler’s dream.

When a British sea captain and his crew landed on the northern tip of Dudley Peninsula in 1802, they were met by an abundance of western grey kangaroos. Hence the name Kangaroo Island, a 34-mile-wide stretch of splendor just nine miles off the coast of South Australia. But in this dream of a place, kangaroos are only part of the magic. The island is also home to some of the best scuba diving in the world, as well as vast sand dunes and one stunning beach after the next, including King George Beach (pictured), where rugged cliffs meet the whitest sand. And of course there’s the wildlife. Koala bears, brown capuchin monkeys, and little penguins—the smallest of the species at under one foot tall—are just a few of the animals that roam freely, earning the island its nickname as the “Galápagos of Australia.”

EDITOR’S

Rhythm of the Delta

EVERYONE dreams about going on safari—a bucket-list check for most any curious adventurer. We imagine exploring Africa’s wild heart and witnessing the Big 5—lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, Cape buffalo—in action. Yet nothing can fully prepare you for the moment you set foot on African soil. The scent of this storied land—a musky mix of sage and earth—is the first of many sensory overloads. You simply cannot be in the bush without feeling a renewed respect for life and death. When I ventured deep into the heart of Botswana with Abercrombie & Kent (page 54), I discovered the rhythm of the Okavango Delta—a rhythm pulsed by connection: to the land, to the wildlife, to the welcoming locals met along the way, and to my fellow travelers who began as strangers and are now my friends.

Experiences like this are precisely why working with a travel advisor is so rewarding. With the help of a creative and collaborative travel designer, the best of Botswana, and beyond, is all yours. Within these pages, we celebrate genuine storytelling—from Botswana to Barcelona to Bermuda. Where will you create your next chapter of travel? I hope it’s a story you’ll never forget, and one that you share with those who matter the most.

Travel well,

Her stories have been featured in The New York Times, Travel + Leisure, National Geographic, Chicago Tribune, and The Guardian Cities’ 10 Most-Read Stories of the Year. For this issue of Ultimate Experiences, Alexandra dives into Bermuda’s shipwreck history and vibrant culture (page 64).

FAVORITE MOMENT IN BERMUDA:

On my last morning, I looked out of my hotel window and there, swooping over the water, were several Bermuda Longtails. You can only see them seasonally and on a temperate late February day, these were the first of the year!

GREATEST TRAVEL ADVENTURE:

A rainforest hike in the uncharted wilds of the Chocó in Colombia, at night—because that's the best time to see rare, endemic tree frogs. We scaled a mountain in the pitch dark, then floated out of the jungle in a canoe, past many curious (crocodilelike) caimans.

FALL TRAVEL PLANS:

I’m really hoping to make it back to Livingston, Montana to see friends, trek through Yellowstone with a biologist to look for wolves, and eat at Campione, one of the country’s best Italian restaurants.

Naomi Tomky’s award-winning food and travel writing has been published by The New York Times, Food & Wine, and Travel + Leisure. She is the author of The Pacific Northwest Seafood Book From trailing a street food hawker in Singapore to navigating the ancient roads of the Mayan jungle, Naomi uses her unrelenting enthusiasm as an eater, photographer, and writer to propel herself around the world. For this issue of Ultimate Experiences, she writes about a journey through French Polynesia with her daughters (page 17) and must-do experiences in South Korea (page 40).

GREATEST FOOD ADVENTURE:

Fishing in the Great Barrier Reef, then eating a six-course dinner made from what we caught.

FAVORITE FALL GETAWAY: Vancouver Island, where it will soon be mushroom and salmon season—which also means it will be hungry bear season. And any time spent on the water brings chances to see whales, sea otters, and orcas.

WHERE TO NEXT:

Chicago for my mother-in-law’s birthday, but I’m also looking forward to checking out what’s new in the always-exciting Windy City restaurant scene.

WINTER WONDERLAND

Six magical reasons why you should visit The Ashford Estate during Ireland's colder seasons.

IN County Mayo, Ireland, The Ashford Estate is renowned for being the summer home of Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness and his family. But the storied, 350-acre property also makes for a dreamy winter escape. The manicured grounds sparkle on frosty mornings. The waters of Lough Corrib, which both Ashford Castle and the Lodge at Ashford Castle overlook, take on a magical quality in the winter light. Indeed, the 800-yearold crenelated castle looks straight out of a storybook when dusted in snow. Roaring fires keep guests cozy and the opulent interiors are even more dazzling when decked out for the holidays. Here, we reveal The Ashford Estate’s best secrets of the season.

1. Home to Ireland’s first Falconry School, the estate offers guests the special chance to join a professional falconer and fly their very own bird of prey on an hour-long Hawk Walk through the woodlands. The birds are even easier to spot as they fly tree to tree in the barren winter canopy.

2. Touted as one of the best hotel spas in Europe—and the only Forbes Five Star spa in Ireland— the Spa at Ashford Castle is the perfect place to hibernate on a chilly day. Book a signature ritual with luxurious products from Natura Bissé, B Africa, and Augustinus Bader skincare, then spend the afternoon lazing by the relaxation pool and taking in the intricate Tree of Life mural that stretches nearly 50 feet in length.

3. Afternoon Tea in the Connaught Room is a tradition preserved at Ashford Castle since 1868. It feels even more special when you’re sitting in a cozy spot with a fire crackling in the hand-carved hearth.

4. Derived from the Irish word for “escape,” the Éalú fitness and leisure center feels like a secret wellness resort tucked into the hotel. From yoga classes and personal trainers to sauna and steam rooms, this state-of-the-art facility has everything you need to kick-start your new year fitness resolutions or work off holiday indulgences.

5. Lough Corrib is one of Ireland’s most venerated fishing waters. Trout season begins February 15 and guests are guided by Ashford’s resident ghillie, Frank Costello, who continues the legacy of his grandfather, a farm manager with the Guinness family in 1917.

6. Yuletide season at The Ashford Estate is fit for royalty. The castle’s head gardener hand-selects and harvests estategrown Christmas trees and greenery for the staterooms and suites. Each year, he spends months scouting out the 20-foot showstopper to be displayed in the palatial Oak Hall, a perfect backdrop for many a family photo. On Christmas Day, guests can sip hot whiskey and listen to traditional music on a cruise of Lough Corrib, then enjoy holiday movies and wine, followed by a festive gourmet dinner. – jen murphy

NORTH OF EXPECTATION

Manitoba’s wild trifecta stuns with belugas, bears, and sky-lit nights.

FAR north in Manitoba—Canada’s central province—Churchill is home to just 900 people. Yet this subarctic frontier town perched on the edge of Hudson Bay delivers one of the planet’s most surreal wildlife experiences.

Most travelers expect Churchill to be white, windblown, and frozen. But visit in summer, and the Arctic reveals its most unexpected palette: bright pink fireweed stretching toward endless skies, warm waters teeming with beluga whales, and twilight yielding to the ghostly shimmer of the northern lights. This is Churchill like you’ve never imagined it—vibrant, alive, and bursting with surprises.

Thousands of belugas return to the warm, shallow estuaries near Churchill each summer, transforming the bay into a living mosaic. From a kayak or Zodiac, you can hear their high-pitched chatter echo beneath the surface—some curious enough to follow alongside, breaching within arm’s reach. For a different perspective, the Matonabee , a new viewing boat with underwater windows, offers an intimate glimpse of this graceful migration below the waves.

Inland, another giant awaits. Churchill is the most accessible place on Earth to see polar bears in the wild, and summer provides rare glimpses of them swimming, sparring, and resting in meadows of fireweed. Some sightings are thrillingly distant—others feel startlingly close. You might spot one of the animals from your tundra vehicle that rolls safely through their terrain, or from a remote eco-lodge, or even out the window from your breakfast table. Mothers and cubs sometimes appear, pausing just long enough to make your heart stop.

And then the sky begins to shimmer. Churchill’s final act is the aurora borealis, dancing across the horizon on as many as 300 nights a year. While peak viewing occurs in winter, sightings are possible year-round— even in summer. As twilight fades, you might look up and see them ripple like a celestial ballet. For a front-row seat, recline beneath a glass Aurora Dome shelter or sip something warm from an open-deck yurt while the heavens perform overhead.

Nature doesn’t whisper in Churchill—it roars, glides, and blazes. Here in the heart of Canada, you’ll find something even more powerful than the elements: a deep, unforgettable connection to the planet itself. Churchill humbles you in the best way. This is the edge of the world, where the wild still rules. – casandra karpiak

UNDER THE RISING SUN

Adventures by Disney ® guides families into the heart of Japan’s local life.

A sudden hush falls over the room as a sumo wrestler steps into the ring. Your kids freeze mid-whisper, eyes wide. The floor vibrates with the rhythm of tradition as he stomps and claps, performing a ritual passed down through generations. It’s a moment that settles into your bones. Just beyond Kyoto in the shadow of a towering bamboo forest, the city reveals its quieter side . You and your family climb into a traditional rickshaw and glide past moss-covered shrines and crimson torii gates. A local guide shares legends of samurai and spirits as the wheels click softly beneath you.

Next stop Takayama, where you take a countryside bike ride through rice fields and quiet farming villages, surrounded by tradition that runs as deep as the winding paths you traverse.

Just when you think you’ve grasped the rhythm of your journey, the tempo shifts—rising into something faster, brighter, more electric. After the stillness of Kyoto and Takayama, Tokyo’s bright lights and fast pace feel like a jolt of energy.

With every step, Adventures by Disney brings you deeper into Japan, where ancient rituals meet modern marvels and each experience reveals something new to wonder at, taste, and remember. At the four distinct resorts—including the elegant Shangri-La Tokyo—your family unwinds in style, reflecting on a day packed with connection, culture, and discovery.

Inside Tokyo’s digital museum TeamLab Borderless, children dart across a glowing floor as cherry blossoms bloom in their wake. As each art concept takes shape, giddy laughter trails like brushstrokes across the shimmering walls of light.

The journey takes a quiet and reflective turn in Hiroshima with a visit to Peace Memorial Park. Families stand beneath the arch of the Cenotaph memorial, listening as a local guide shares stories of resilience and remembrance. Children place paper cranes near the statue of Sadako Sasaki, their hands briefly still in a place where history feels heartbreakingly close.

From quiet tea gardens to sushi counters, bustling city streets to sacred temple paths, this 10-night adventure reveals a Japan most travelers never see: thoughtful, textured, and full of surprises. Not every highlight is on the map—some you find when you're not looking. And somehow, Disney always knows precisely where to find them. – casandra karpiak

BEACH

With Paul Gauguin Cruises , a special journey brings a writer and her family inside French Polynesian culture and nature.

THE Pacific’s intense shade of aquamarine startled me the afternoon my daughters and I departed Papeete aboard m/s Paul Gauguin . Everything about the sailing through Tahiti and the Society Islands with Paul Gauguin Cruises felt as if it needed a warning label: Objects are closer than they appear, more stunning than expected, brimming with unimaginable amounts of color and culture.

Les Gauguines, the ship’s local hosts, greeted us with hearty la oranas and songs of welcome. Later that week, they taught us how to play the ukulele and shared stories of life in French Polynesia.

On the second day, we docked directly on Raiatea. The ship’s design, specifically for gliding through the region’s crystalline shallows, allowed us to slip through passes into calm lagoons. After a morning of souvenir shopping, I dropped a fragrant stash of vanilla in my room on the ship, just a few steps from the market, and took a shore excursion to the Faaroa River.

From my kayak, I reached out and plucked a floating sea hibiscus blossom. Amid its daily transition from apricot to deep purple, the flower embodied how every moment of the trip brought me within arm’s reach of another treasure.

Each island offered exciting new activities: E-biking along Moorea’s Pineapple Trail, past archeological sites and turtlefilled bays. A safari to Huahine’s famed blue-eyed eels. Drift snorkeling through the coral gardens of Taha’a, with the currents carrying me instead of swimming.

On Bora Bora, Paul Gauguin Cruises showed us the value of specializing in one distinct region for more than 26 years, arranging for guests to attend a local dance festival. It was too late for my young kids, but we missed nothing: Dancers came aboard our ship and taught us how to make floral headdresses before they put on their own festival-worthy show.

The serene waters magnified everything, bringing us into the heart of Polynesia—almost too close into the heart, as I discovered on a shore excursion in the lagoon surrounding Bora Bora. As I stood nervously in the chest-deep water, curious blacktip sharks and playful stingrays swam circles around me, wondering, I assume, the same thing as me: How lucky am I to be in this paradise? – naomi tomky

LUXURY & LEISURE

A lengthy Grand River Cruise with AmaWaterways gives guests more time to explore Europe.

TAKE your time. That’s the very notion of AmaWaterways’ twoweek Grand River Cruises, which invite guests to absorb the fascinating scenery, cultures, and cuisines of Europe, while still lingering longer aboard the luxurious ship, taking in the spa, pool, and restaurants. AmaWaterways has curated five distinct journeys that glide along the region’s most alluring and historically significant rivers, including the Seine, the Danube, and the Rhine, as well as Dutch and Belgian canals and waterways.

WINE & DINE

In Europe, each destination provides a rich history into the region’s local food and wine. Be sure to make the trek to Grignon, France, a hilltop Provençal village near the Switzerland border, where you’ll accompany a farmer and his trusty, truffle-sniffing dog to seek out the coveted black diamond truffles. Further west in Bordeaux, spend time at the Cité du Vin, a museum dedicated to the cultural heritage of wine. Onto Bruges, Belgium, where you’ll relish the world-famous truffles, pralines, and hot chocolate in the city’s abundant chocolateries. In Cologne, Germany, toast your well-deserved vacation with a hoppy Kölsch beer that’s known for its “pearl string” bubbles, and in Serbia, savor the intensely plum flavor of Slivovitz , a traditional Balkan brandy.

ART & DESIGN

Along these routes, a true kaleidoscope of sensory feasts will delight art novices and aficionados alike. You’ll begin in Paris, of course, to explore the oft-pointed boulevards and monuments. From there, head to the French seaside town of Honfleur, whose shoreline has inspired many Impressionist painters including Claude Monet, Eugène Boudin, and Camille Corot. In Giverny, take a bike tour to Monet’s home and lush gardens, resplendent with water lilies, Japanese bridges, and trailing willows that bring his iconic paintings to life. Sauntering through Arles, you’ll discover the scenic inspirations for many of Vincent van Gogh’s moving masterpieces. And in Bavarian Germany, step inside the Würzburg’s Residence and raise your eyes to admire Giambattista Tiepolo’s masterpiece—the largest ceiling fresco in the world.

HISTORY & HERITAGE

Europe is abundant with UNESCO World Heritage Sites— fortresses, castles, medieval hamlets, markets—that beckon you to explore them on foot or by bicycle. In Germany, opt for a private visit to the story-rich Lahneck Castle, a medieval fortress above the Rhine. In Bulgaria, hike to the awe-inspiring Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo, which were built into cliff sides and showcase medieval frescos. And in Budapest’s Buda Castle District, ascend to the seven-turreted Fisherman’s Bastion for a view of the whole city and the winding Danube.

From your ship’s deck, you’ll marvel at the landscapes that witnessed the rise and fall of many an empire, including the breathtaking gorges between Serbia and Romania known as the Iron Gates. Try to spy the colossal rock carving of the face of King Decebalus. At 131 feet, it’s the tallest rock sculpture in Europe.

The Greatest Show on Earth

African Travel, Inc. provides a front-row seat to the life-changing Great Migration.

EVERY year, the plains of East Africa play host to one of the world’s wildest wonders. The Great Migration is a high-drama spectacle starring more than a million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelle, all of them migrating in a clockwise loop around Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park and Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve. The cycle of life unfolds along the perilous journey: Massive herds thunder across the plains and crash through rivers, while prowling lions and watchful crocodiles await. When the herds reach the safety of the southern Serengeti, they give birth. It’s an unfiltered scene that’s both violent and tender.

From January to March, calving season in the Southern Serengeti brings the birth of around 500,000 wildebeest—an extraordinary time to witness a birth and observe the animals’ wobbly first steps. In April and May, the herds move north through the lush Central and Western Serengeti, offering vibrant landscapes and fewer crowds. From June to August, they gather in mass numbers for riveting crossings of the crocodile-infested waters of the Grumeti and Mara rivers—heart-pounding moments filled with tension and

photographic drama. September and October are prime for game viewing in the Maasai Mara, where the herds spread out and predator activity is high. By November, the wildebeest begin their journey south again, completing the cycle.

African Travel has crafted several ways to witness these stunning events, yet one experience, dubbed the Great Migration – an Ultimate Safari, combines both the Serengeti and the Maasai Mara, so you can encounter the migration no matter what time of the year you travel. This new escorted safari features premiere lodges and camps located in private concessions directly on the migration route. Guests can watch zebra and wildebeest crossings from the private verandahs of their tents and in the wildlife-rich Moru Kopjes area, where there’s potential to see both the migration and the Big Five. The itinerary concludes with a visit to the UNESCOlisted Ngorongoro Conservation Area, known as one of Africa’s most extraordinary wildlife havens. It’s home to the Ngorongoro Crater, nicknamed Africa’s “Garden of Eden,” a vast volcanic crater blanketed in wetlands, forests, and grasslands that attract nearly 30,000 large mammals including elephants and lions.

With African Travel, a dedicated Travel Director handles all of the details of this all-inclusive journey and can curate extra-special experiences, like a sunrise hot air balloon ride over the Serengeti. Tailor-Made migration-focused itineraries are also available, each designed around the traveler’s preferences and passions—and all of them destined to be a never-forget memory. – jen murphy

The Silversea S.A.L.T. program invites guests to explore the world through the lens of food and drink.

From left: A S.A.L.T. excursion with friends at a vineyard in Palermo, Italy; Mediterranean cuisine at S.A.L.T. Kitchen.

THROUGHOUT his career as a food and travel journalist, Adam Sachs has traversed the world in search of extraordinary flavors and experiences. The best part of those trips, he says, is the people he meets along the way and the behind-the-scenes access to chefs, winemakers, and farmers. That is the very idea behind the Silversea S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program. “We want to give guests a real taste of the local flavors and traditions of the places we’re sailing to, and create compelling ways to keep those connections and experiences happening on board,” says Sachs, the Director of S.A.L.T. and the former Editor in Chief of Saveur magazine.

There are now nearly 100 ever-evolving S.A.L.T. excursions on Silversea itineraries around the globe. In addition, onboard experiences include cooking classes by visiting chefs, authors, and experts at S.A.L.T. Lab, dining at S.A.L.T. Kitchen (a restaurant whose menus change with each destination), and regionally inspired cocktails and local wine, beer, and spirits at S.A.L.T. Bar, where Sachs says he’s forever partial to the Via Salaria, a Greek take on a classic Negroni, made with local gin, Vermouth, “and a little salinity from a caper berry.” Here, he shares more delicious ideas, tips, and insight. – sarah taylor asquith

WHAT IS THE INSPIRATION OF THE

S.A.L.T.

PROGRAM?

“It’s all about exploring the world through the lens of food and drink. In designing the program, we asked ourselves what we could create that would really give our guests a deeper connection to and appreciation for the people and cuisines of the places we visit. The answer to that question is a kind of ecosystem of culinary discovery.”

TELL US ABOUT ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE S.A.L.T. EXPERIENCES.

“Peskesi is a biodynamic, high-elevation farm in Crete. It’s not easy to reach, but worth the effort: amazing views over rolling hills, olive groves where they make their own oil, dozens of varieties of herbs and plants perfuming the landscape, and a dancing fire in the stone hearth where bread is baking in the covered oven and lamb, dolmades, and stuffed zucchini flowers are cooking over the embers.

The patron-owner Panagiotis Magganas is a passionate advocate for the bounty of the island and a fantastic host, and the food was some of the best I’ve tasted anywhere in Greece. Beyond just a great lunch with a pretty view, this is the kind of place we love to share with guests because we get to really learn from farmers, chefs, and owners.”

HOW HAVE YOU WITNESSED THE POWERFUL CONNECTION BETWEEN FOOD AND TRAVEL?

“We see these connections being made when breaking bread, or sharing a bottle, or filling a basket full of vegetables from a garden that you’ll cook together for lunch. People open up, share stories about meals and their traditions. Our S.A.L.T. Experiences are conversational and interactive. You’re always encouraged to ask questions and get involved. Sharing those connections and curiosity with our guests is one of the best parts of the job.”

CAN YOU EXPLAIN HOW THE S.A.L.T. LAB WORKS?

“Guests roll up their sleeves, put on aprons, and learn to make regional dishes from our personable and talented chef-instructors. They also go into a bit about the history and stories around certain recipes and traditions, so guests come away with a deeper understanding of where we’re visiting. Our classes are created with some amazing food experts, including cookbook authors like Yasmin Khan in Greece and Crete, Anissa Helou in the Med, and the Salmon Sisters in Alaska.”

WHAT’S NEXT FOR S.A.L.T.?

“We’ve got some fun experiences in Norway, including a taste of the fjords at a sustainable seafood operation that’s a short boat ride from Bergen, and lunch at a beautiful farm outside Olden. We’re also working on some great new experiences in Japan and Australia, among other regions. Every new port and region is a chance to discover new tastes and experiences.”

IN AWE OF ALASKA

Behold the marvels of the Last Frontier with Crystal’s legendary sailings.

NOTHING prepares you for the moment you lock eyes with a Kodiak bear. Bulkier than a mainland grizzly—the Sumo wrestler, if you will, of brown bears—some 3,500 of this colossal sub-species saunter around the verdant island they call home, foraging in meadows and fishing for plump salmon with formidable teeth and claws. Watching them from a respectful distance at Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge is just one of the awe-inspiring moments to experience on a Crystal journey to Alaska. As part of the A&K Travel Group family, these shore excursions throughout the Last Frontier are curated by Abercrombie & Kent, inviting travelers to dig deeper into Alaska’s thrilling mix of outdoor, cultural, and culinary adventures.

EXPLORE

NATURAL WONDERS

The Alaskan wilderness boasts sights and sounds you will never forget: The sonic boom of Hubbard Glacier, North America’s largest tidewater glacier, as it calves chunks of ice into the sea. Towering, 200-foot-tall Sitka spruce trees in Tongass National Forest, the largest intact temperate rainforest in the world. Hundreds of migrating humpback whales gracing the waters around Juneau. Choose from a collection of exclusive excursions like wildlife safaris led by National Geographic photographers, flightseeing over Misty Fjords’ glacial lakes and plunging waterfalls, and leading your own team of sled dogs over Mendenhall Glacier.

UNCOVER CULTURAL TREASURES

Alaska might be best known for its expansive wilderness, but captivating human stories of survival and diversity are waiting to be discovered in towns like Sitka, Russia’s former New World capital, and historic Juneau, founded during the Gold Rush. Hunt for mysterious 8,000-year-old petroglyphs during low tide on a rocky beach in Wrangell, a charming city with a significant Tlingit presence. Next, listen to the Alaska Native group’s stories as an invited guest at Chief Shakes Tribal House, a faithful replica of a cedar longhouse.

SAVOR CULINARY TRADITIONS

Alaska’s famous halibut and salmon taste that much better when you catch them yourself. Learn how it’s done in some of the richest waters on the planet and then join a local fisherwoman and master wilderness chef in Icy Point Strait for a hands-on cooking demonstration that includes filleting, preserving, and grilling over aromatic Alder wood. Don’t miss the opportunity to sample Alaska native cuisine like reindeer sausage, smoked salmon, and blueberry jam while visiting the Tlingit people in Ketchikan. For millennia, these straight-from-the-earth dishes have been connecting the Indigenous group to the land’s ancient coastlines and lush old-growth forests. – alexandra owens

GloriousGALÁPAGOS

Celebrity Cruises brings travelers up close and personal to the archipelago’s natural wonders.

TO travel to the Galápagos Islands is like stepping into a living science experiment where each creature you encounter—from diving iguanas to the only penguins that live north of the equator— is stranger and more wondrous than the next. The best way to immerse yourself in the pristine, volcanic archipelago’s raw nature? By sailing with Celebrity Cruises on Celebrity Flora , the first allsuite megayacht designed exclusively for exploring the Galápagos Islands. Led by expert naturalists, you’ll discover moon-like lava flows, magical blue grottos, and black sand beaches in intimate groups of 10. These are just a few shore excursions that cannot be duplicated anywhere else on earth.

SNORKEL WITH PENGUINS AT BARTOLOMÉ ISLAND

Bartolomé Island’s obelisk-like Pinnacle Rock may rank as one of the most photographed sites in the Galápagos, but the impish Galápagos penguins swimming below the volcanic monolith steal the show with their antics. Snorkel beside them and try to keep up as they “fly” underwater at dizzying speeds.

CARRY ON A QUIRKY 18TH-CENTURY TRADITION

Floreana Island became a makeshift post office in 1793, when British whalers set up a wooden barrel by the bay to collect mail for outbound seamen. Today, travelers continue to play postman, sifting through letters and hand-delivering them to recipients back home—snail mail at its finest!

FLOCK TO A WORLD-CLASS BIRD-WATCHING DESTINATION

Bird lovers, rejoice: Punta Pitt on San Cristobal Island boasts a trifecta of blue-footed, red-footed, and Nazca boobies. Hike up the dramatic volcanic terrain and explore the only place in the Galápagos where you can observe all three species nesting. With any luck, you’ll witness one of their intricate courtship rituals which involves synchronized dancing, whistling, and gifting smooth, shiny pebbles. Consider it the bird version of a diamond ring.

KAYAK

IN SEARCH OF PIRATE GRAFFITI

Once used by pirates as a natural anchor site and launchpad for attacks against merchants, the rugged coast of Tagus Cove, Isabela is decorated in hand-carved inscriptions dating back to 1836. Take in the historic etchings as you kayak through the site, and keep an eye out for sea lions, flightless cormorants, and sea turtles.

WATCH MARINE IGUANAS FORAGE UNDERWATER FOR ALGAE Meet Godzilla—or at least his Mini-Me—in the flesh when you snorkel with the largest colony of marine iguanas in the archipelago at Punta Espinoza, Fernandina. The world’s only oceangoing lizards were dubbed “hideous-looking creatures” by Darwin, but there’s something undeniably charismatic about the way they use their flattened tails to skillfully dive beneath the surface.

GET A CRASH COURSE ON GIANT TORTOISE EVOLUTION

The Galápagos doesn’t have just one kind of giant tortoise—there are actually 12 unique species found around the archipelago. Discover a deeper understanding of these remarkably biodiverse reptiles at the Fausto Llerena Breeding Center on Santa Cruz, where you can get up close to their adorable hatchlings that will be released across the islands to restore native populations.

An insider’s look at Uniworld Boutique River Cruises’ stunning new ship.

WHEN journeying through Europe, Egypt, South America, India, Vietnam, and Cambodia with Uniworld Boutique River Cruises, the onboard experiences often rivals those ashore. Much of that can be credited to the remarkable design of the 18 boutique vessels—each one inspired by the rivers it cruises, telling a rich story of art, history, and place.

When creating the interior spaces for Uniworld’s newest ship, S.S. Emilie which will begin sailing the Danube River in spring 2026—Dutch designer Liane van Leeuwen, the owner of Studio-L, looked to master Viennese painter Gustav Klimt and his muse, Emilie Flöge. Take a peek behind the scenes with van Leeuwen.

ON THE INSPIRATION:

“The interior design is inspired by the Vienna Secession, the art movement between 1890 and 1914 that was known for its optimistic worldview and faith in the future. The style is elegant and organic, characterized by intricate ornamentation and an aversion to symmetry. Common motifs include gracefully stylized plants and flowers—like lilies, irises, poppies, and rosebuds—alongside swans, peacocks, dragonflies, and often delicate female figures. Gustav Klimt is arguably the most prominent figure of the Vienna Secession art movement.”

ON THE NAME OF THE SHIP:

“I wanted to shine a light on Klimt’s muse, Emilie Flöge. Emilie was a successful fashion designer and businesswoman—a remarkably emancipated woman at that time! She designed custom-made garments in the style of the Wiener Werkstätte, most notably dresses with high bodices, loose silhouettes, and fluttering sleeves in modern patterns. Emilie liberated women from their tight corsets, giving them greater freedom of movement and ultimately contributing to their health.”

ON THE LUXURIOUS MATERIALS:

“The interior of S.S. Emilie is primarily crafted from stunning high-gloss walnut veneer, accented with solid decorative frames and exquisite details. Additional materials include marble floors and tabletops, oak herringbone parquet, glass mosaic walls, beveled mirrors with sandblasted decorations, plush custom-made carpets, silk curtains, stained-glass doors, and luxurious upholstery in mohair and velvet.”

ON UNIQUE DESIGN CHALLENGES:

“As you can imagine, the regulations on ships are very strict, making the design process more complex. Next to that, the interior must not only meet the requirements of the hotel crew, but also of the nautical staff. Yet, the greatest challenge lies in providing the guests with a pleasant and spacious experience, despite the ship’s limited space. To achieve this, every inch is thought out.”

ON THE SPECIAL DETAILS:

“All suites and staterooms feature bathrooms with glass mosaic walls and beautiful mirrors. The restaurant is decorated with elegant stainedglass doors and a richly upholstered Jugendstil ceiling. Walnut Art Nouveau desks and a crystal palm-leaf chandelier define the lobby, with a prominent portrait of Emilie adding the final touch.”

SHORE THINGS

Five unrivaled experiences with Star Clippers.

TRADITIONAL sailing, but make it extraordinary. That’s the notion behind Star Clippers’ fleet of three ships, powered by authentic sails that only use their engines to increase speed as needed.

Extraordinary is also the best way to describe Star Clippers’ 15 home ports, all situated in lesser-known regions of the world. Spetses, Greece, for instance, is a car-free island with horse-drawn carriages, neoclassical mansions, and old-world elegance, while Portobelo, Panama is a UNESCO-listed colonial town with a storied pirate past and crumbling Spanish forts draped in jungle. With such incredibly distinct destinations, the onshore experiences are that much more unexpected—and unforgettable.

Speedboat to the glowing Blue Cave on the island of Hvar, then sip local Plavac Mali and Bogdanuša wines and taste pećica na tećicu , a regional dessert baked with goat cheese. Explore the coastal town of Vis by 4WD, chase waterfalls in Krka National Park, and uncover treasures along Dubrovnik’s historic streets.

2. MARVEL AT THE CARIBBEAN’S UNTAMED BEAUTY. Set sail on a private catamaran, hopping off to snorkel through the vibrant reefs. Zipline above St. Lucia’s Soufrière Bay for a bird’s eye view of Gros Piton and Petit Piton, the pair of now-dormant volcanoes that rise from the Caribbean. Swim alongside stingrays in Antigua, and indulge in as much local guava and starfruit as possible.

3. UNCOVER ISTANBUL’S GEMS. Take a guided tour through the storied streets of Constantinople, and in Istanbul, visit the Süleymaniye Mosque, an Ottoman-era mosque that dates back

to 1550. You’ll also descend into the hauntingly beautiful Yerebatan Cistern, the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns hidden beneath the city.

4. SAIL THE LIGURIAN SEA, WHERE HISTORY MEETS GLAMOUR. From Alghero’s ancient towers on Sardinia to the serene Convent of San Francesco in Tuscany, each locale brims with charm. Sip Vermentino di Sardegna at the “wine resort” of Leda' d’Ittiri in Monte Doglia, explore designer boutiques in Monaco and Monte Carlo, and discover Porto Venere, one of the most picturesque fishing villages on the Italian Riviera.

5. TAKE IN THE POSTCARD-PERFECT VISTAS OF THE SOUTHERN CYCLADES. FANTASTICAL Food Adventure

Sailing through Alaska with Oceania Cruises on an exclusive journey of cooking, crabbing, and feasting.

IT’S the second day of my journey with Oceania Cruises into the Alaskan panhandle, and I’m staring down a massive plate of in-theshell king crab. A Midwest native, I’m not exactly an expert in this fare and the observant chef catches on: She walks over to our table and in one fell swoop, kindly—and beautifully—shells my crab.

Local to Icy Strait Point, the crab was just caught this morning—a stunning representation of this eight-night sailing: the debut of Oceania Riviera in Alaska, and the only ship designed for foodies, by foodies. French celebrity chef and Oceania Cruises Culinary Advisor Jacques Pépin helped curate the nine onboard dining venues (with an impressive one chef for every 10 guests) and hand-selected the cooking class instructors. Onshore experiences are curated with a decidedly food bent, offering culinary excursions in every port—from cooking classes and market visits to fishing, crabbing, and huge seafood feasts. The itinerary begins in Whittier, near Anchorage, with stops in Icy Strait Point, Skagway, Sitka, and Ketchikan, then onto Prince Rupert and Vancouver in Canada.

On the third night of our sailing, dinner stays true to the theme. In Oceania Riviera’s Terrace Café, we indulge in the Alaska Chef’s Market Dinner, a spread overflowing with local favorites including Alaskan sausage, Alaskan smoked fish, king salmon, cod fritters, ceviche, fish chowder, and, of course, crab—all of it, again, just caught this morning.

The next day, we take a smaller boat through Sitka Sound, where we watch a gray whale bubble-net feeding. From above, it looks like a spiral of bubbles shooting up to the water’s surface. Then the whale leaps through the middle of the spiral, collecting as many fish in its mouth as it possibly can. We learn from our guide that bubble-net feeding is typically a trait of humpback whales, but this gray whale (who they’ve named Grayson) was raised in a humpback pod and learned their behaviors.

As we near the end of our time in Alaska, we head over to Ketchikan on an excursion to observe wildlife and waterfalls along George Inlet. Mahoney Falls, pouring 1,600 feet down the mountain, sits to my left, while on the right, whale spouts burst through the water. It’s a stunning sight that drives home Alaska’s majesty, a place where you’re surrounded at all times by nature’s marvels. Next stop is another stunning seaside lodge, where one more crab feast awaits us—crustaceans that, just an hour before, I’ve helped pull up straight from the sea.

This time, I expertly shell my plate of Dungeness crab with no assistance (or thought!) at all. As I sit at a long table surrounded by newfound friends and the beauty of Alaska, it tastes all the sweeter. – jennifer billock

CULTURE OF COOL

From city to beach, see the best of South Korea with insider tips from Journese ®

STANDING inside Seoul’s serene 14th-century royal palace, the shimmering skyscrapers of the high-energy capital feel worlds away. But the futuristic transit system takes just minutes to reach the center of the trendsetting city that created K-Pop, also home to 37 Michelinstarred restaurants, some of the world’s most luxurious hotels, and the hanoks (traditional wooden houses) of Bukchon.

Yet even the bullet trains speeding out to the coast at 190 miles an hour can’t bring you to all of South Korea’s 3,500 islands, 14 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and 22 national parks. Lucky for us, these insider tips reveal the must-do’s when visiting the stunning East Asian country.

HIKE PART OF SEOUL’S OLD CITY WALL: Slip into the short Inwangsan section of the 12.5-mile loop to see bricks that showcase the wall’s 650-year-history, the painted ceiling of the Changuimun Gate, and incredible views of the city.

FEAST ON THE FRESHEST SEAFOOD IN BUSAN: At the massive Jagalchi Market, choose from crabs, clams, octopus, and fish as big as a human or as small as a finger. Then head upstairs, where one of the restaurants will transform it into an unforgettable meal.

EXPLORE GYEONGJU’S DONGGUNG PALACE AT NIGHT: Golden lights, still waters, and elegant pavilions paint a majestic, almost surreal scene at this ancient royal residence.

TUNE INTO K-POP: You don’t need to know BlackPink from Fifty Fifty to have fun taking a dance class, especially when it’s taught by a K-Pop backup dancer. You can also snap photos with GangnamDols along Hallyu K-Star Road—think Hollywood Walk of Fame, but human-sized bears instead of sidewalk stars.

STOP AND SMELL THE FLOWERS IN SEOUL FOREST PARK: The Seongsu-dong neighborhood is known for trendy coffee shops and avant-garde boutiques like Ader Error and Musinsa Store Seongsu. But it’s also home to the natural beauty of Seoul Forest Park, a picturesque former royal hunting ground, famous for its cherry blossoms in spring and ginkgo trees in fall.

WANDER INSADONG’S ALLEYS: Get off the main street and into the nooks and crannies of this one-time hub of traditional art studios and antiques. Browse the swords in the Knife Gallery, step into a stationary shop, and pause to sip plum tea or makgeolli rice ale. – naomi tomky

Adventure OF A LIFETIME

With Micato Safaris , each experience is personal, transformative, and unforgettable.

ADVENTURE means different things to different travelers. For some, it’s defined by an adrenaline-inducing experience, like coming face-to-face with a family of Silverback gorillas in Rwanda—so close, you can hear each other breathing. Others might prefer to soar over the Serengeti and Maasai Mara by hot-air balloon, taking in a bird’s eye view of herds of elephants, giraffes, and maybe even the Big Five. Or perhaps your idea of adventure is immersing yourself in the daily life of a Maasai family, learning about their heritage, cuisine, and traditional crafts.

And that’s where Micato Safaris comes in. Crafting custom trips throughout East Africa, Southern Africa, and India for 60 years, the family-owned outfitter takes the time to get to know and understand each traveler, curating lasting, life-changing experiences and lodging that speak to them on a personal level. And because everyone has different travel needs and wishes, Micato Safaris has designed three distinct ways to journey: Custom Safaris for guests who prefer a completely customized itinerary; Classic Safaris with pre-set departures and popular safari itineraries, and Private Classic Safaris for those who wish to take a Classic Safari, but with their own private group. Once that’s determined, it’s time to choose your own adventure.

On an immersive adventure, you’ll get up close and personal with wildlife, people, and nature. Watch lions lounging in the shade, elephants crossing your path, and giraffes grazing just yards away. Jog through the Great Rift Valley alongside a barefooted Maasai warrior or canoe through the Okavango Delta floodplains alongside hippos. In Kenya, you can hand-feed orphaned baby rhinos at Ol Jogi Wildlife Conservancy and watch baby elephants being bottle-fed at David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.

Or how about a sky-high adventure? When you safari by private helicopter, you’ll explore the slopes of Mount Kenya, the thundering waters of Victoria Falls, and the thousands of flamingoes that make Lake Bogoria’s blue waters turn pink. If you’d rather take in the views by hotair balloon, you can float quietly over the majestic plains and wildlife, then touch down for a champagne breakfast in the grassy savannahs.

Sometimes it’s the interactions with locals that create the most profound impact on travelers. Micato Safaris can arrange cultural adventures that include private visits with families and tribal communities, where guests connect with villagers on a personal level. Other community meetings can be curated as well with wildlife conservationists, local artists, farmers, and chefs.

Seabourn’s Culinary Partner and Master Chef dishes on flavor, tradition, and cultural connection.

ANTON “Tony” Egger has understood the concept of “farm to table” since he was a child. He grew up in a village in Austria, not far from the Italian border, where his parents ran a small hotel and farm. He and his sisters would join them on trips to local markets in Italy, often stopping at a family friend’s home for lunch along the way. It’s here where the young Egger tasted the best tiramisu he’s ever known. He named it “Nonna’s Tiramisu,” and eventually Nonna, the mother of the family friend, taught him how to make it. Fast forward to today and Egger has brought this recipe—along with many other culinary lessons—to Seabourn and its six ships, where he’s the Culinary Partner and Master Chef. Egger shares some food for thought.

– sarah taylor asquith

1. ALWAYS SOURCE THE FRESHEST INGREDIENTS.

“Our team works closely with trusted purveyors and artisanal producers around the world, many of whom we’ve built long-standing relationships with. Depending on where a ship is sailing, we identify opportunities to bring in local, in-season ingredients such as vibrant produce in Asia and fresh seafood and fish in the Mediterranean. It takes planning and coordination, but the result is worth it: guests enjoy flavors that are truly rooted in place.”

2. SEEK OUT NOVEL INGREDIENTS AND INTERESTING FLAVORS.

“The Asian markets offer an abundance of delicious and exotic fruits, making them a true foodie paradise: mango, durian, rambutan, and jackfruit, as well as mangosteen, known as the Queen of Fruits, and longan, which tastes like a sweeter lychee. The Turkish markets offer a rich and diverse selection of aromatics and spices, and the Mediterranean region boasts a remarkable diversity of olive oils that results in a wide array of flavors, aromas, and health benefits.”

3. ASK GUESTS FOR THEIR THOUGHTS AND OPINIONS.

“Solis has quickly become one of the most popular dining venues on Seabourn’s ocean-going ships since its launch in 2024. Inspired by guest feedback, the concept was designed around two of their top culinary preferences: Mediterranean cuisine and dishes that emphasize ‘market-fresh, local, and healthy’ ingredients. What truly distinguishes Solis is the meticulous attention to detail in its creation, from its vibrant menu to its thoughtfully crafted ambiance.”

4. VISIT LOCAL MARKETS WITH A CHEF.

“One of the most immersive ways we connect guests to local culinary traditions is through our complimentary Shopping with the Chef experience. Guests join me or one of our executive chefs on a guided visit to markets around the world, where we source ingredients like just-caught seafood in Chile, sweet baklava in Turkey, island charcuterie in Corsica, or fresh fruits and vegetables from Damnoen Saduak, the famous floating market near Bangkok. We meet with local vendors, taste regional specialties, and select ingredients that often appear on that evening’s menu. Glide effortlessly through the water, watching the vibrant marine life as the currents carry you through this strait in the northwest portion of Rangiroa lagoon, aka the Blue Lagoon, that meets the open ocean.

MARQUESAS ISLANDS: Sail far off the grid to the enchanting landscapes of the Marquesas Islands, one of the most remote archipelagos in the world. Here, you’ll visit ancient sacrificial sites and hike through the rainforest. Visit the bay on Nuku Hiva where author Herman Melville took refuge on his voyage that inspired Moby Dick . Experience traditional life in the village of Omoa, home to barely more than 200 people on Fatu-Hiva, and learn about the ancient Polynesian arts of tapa, tattoos, and wood carving.

EXQUISITE ROME BY NIGHT

The Eternal City has a round-the-clock flair for the dramatic. As the crowds call it a night, your evening gains speed on a panoramic drive through Rome, past shimmering icons such as the Colosseum and St. Peter’s Basilica. Illuminating commentary illustrates Roman life through the centuries, but make sure to have a camera handy to capture your own view of Italian history. Brilliant lighting, cryptic shadows, and glistening reflections make for magnificent after-dark photos.

WHITE NIGHTS HELSINKI CRUISE

Summertime and staying up late go hand in hand in Helsinki. Enjoy an evening dinner cruise around the archipelago during the White Nights phenomenon, when the sun briefly dips below the horizon before rising again, blurring the boundaries between the end of an evening and the dawn of a new day. Landmarks like the 18th-century maritime fortress Suomenlinna don’t sleep, but rather show off through a seemingly endless dusk.

EVENING WALK AND DINNER IN HISTORICAL NYHAVN

Strolling along the streets of Nyhavn is like stepping into a fairy tale. Flanked with colorful townhouses and glassy canals, this storied district in Copenhagen has enchanted many—most notably famous Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen, who spent most of his life here. During the magical summer season, it feels like the sun takes forever to dip, but don’t be late for dinner at Nyhavns Færgekro. Local specialties include mustard-cured herring and house-brewed aquavit.

OLD TOWN LÜBECK EVENING CRUISE

After circling Lübeck’s Old Town (Altstadt) on a Trave River cruise, gaze at its medieval architectural treasures (don’t miss the Holsten Gate) during a guided walk through the German city. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Hanseatic city’s well-preserved center looks much like it did during the 15th century. While you’re here, be sure to sample Lübeck marzipan, a local specialty.

ROMANTIC DINNER OVERLOOKING BARCELONA

Admire the Barcelona skyline and surrounding coast while sipping cava and savoring local dishes like paella, patatas bravas, and esqueixada. The evening’s brightest moments transpire after dessert as you wind your way through the city on a driving tour that reveals how Antoni Gaudi’s legendary architecture ensures that even after dark, there’s never a dull moment in Barcelona.

ATHENS & SUNSET AT CAPE SOUNION

The light of the setting sun evokes a strong sense of endearment for Athens’ famed icons. Yet as your driving tour approaches the scenic coast of Cape Sounion, home to the Temple of Poseidon, you realize your vacation has shifted gears from marvelous to unparalleled. When the sun finally sinks below the horizon, dine on a traditional Greek dinner at a festive tavern. Your hardest decision of the day might be deciding between a glass of Greek wine or an ouzo cocktail. Perhaps you should try both. After all, you’re spending the night. – dana rebmann

OCEAN state of mind

With Explora Journeys , sometimes the ship itself is the favorite destination.

FROM the Mediterranean to the Caribbean, Europe to the Amazon, and South America to North America (including Alaska, a new destination), Explora Journeys brings discerning travelers to every corner of the world. And their favorite destination of all? Well, it might not be on the itinerary. That’s because the onboard experience is more than just part of the journey—it’s what guests often remember the most. And soon there will be two more ways to take it all in: EXPLORA III will set sail in summer of 2026, and EXPLORA IV in summer of 2027.

From the moment you step aboard, you’ll feel like you’re in a serene retreat. Comparable to a luxurious hotel room, each suite starts at a generous 377 square feet, and increases in size from there—the Owner’s Residences features more than 3,000 square feet of space. Every suite is oceanfront with a private terrace, while the spacious bathrooms are designed with heated floors, and the walk-in closets with a vanity and seating. There’s also ample storage, automatic nightlights, bedside charging ports, Dyson hairdryers, and complimentary minibars that are replenished daily. You may never want to leave your suite!

But you really should do your best to leave, because just steps away is a global dining experience in and of itself. Make that nine experiences, where the choices are so plentiful that some guests have said they feel no need to eat at land restaurants during their journey. On top of that, there are no set dining times on the ships, which means you can grab a bite or a full-course meal anytime you choose. Head of Culinary Franck Garanger leads

each onboard restaurant, culling flavors from Italy, France, Asia, the Mediterranean, and more. A few of his favorite dishes include the miso-roasted black cod fillet with Hoba leaves and grilled lime at Sakura, and the crushed fingerling potatoes with Normandy butter, chives, Calvisius Oscietra caviar, and crème fraîche at Marble & Co. Grill. And don’t forget the traditional vanilla crepes made to order at Gelateria & Creperie at The Conservatory. There are also multiple bars and lounges, including the beloved Malt Whisky Bar, an intimate spot where you can try a rare whisky and select a fine cigar from the walk-in humidor.

Next stop: true bliss. Because wellness means something different to everyone, Explora Journeys explores every angle with spa treatments, a thermal spa, and individual and group fitness experiences in the state-of-the-art Technogym or outside on the top deck running track. The spa features a hydrotherapy pool, steam room, and Finnish sauna, while salt caves are designed with Himalayan salt bricks and salt-infused air to help improve mental clarity, boost immunity, and promote circulation.

It’s not just the adults who want to stay on the ship forever. The Nautilus Club features dedicated areas for children and teens, ages six to 17, where certified expert hosts lead fun and inspiring activities like art, tech tournaments, sport sessions, and sustainability projects. Meanwhile, the Nautilus Club Juniors, for ages three to five, offers enriching, curated activities for young seafarers, and even supervised care.

Some like to say that it’s not the destination, it’s the journey, yet with Explora Journeys, the “Ocean State of Mind” is perhaps the most desirable destination and journey of all.

A magical three-day itinerary

The view from Chief's Camp, an A&K Sanctuary in Botswana.

INTO AFRICA

Lions and hippos and sundowners, oh my!

Editor in chief Erin Lentz discovers the wonders of Botswana’s Okavango Delta with Abercrombie & Kent.

A pair of mokoros at sunset at Chief's Camp, an A&K Sanctuary, in Botswana's Okavango Delta.
LET’S GO SHAKE THE BUSH LOOSE AND SEE WHAT WE CAN FIND. “ ”

TIP #1

TRAVEL LIGHT

Your A&K safari duffel—provided before your trip and designed with special compartments to stow dusty shoes or electronics—is your trusty companion. Laundry is included along the journey, so leave room for local purchases (A&K Sanctuary camps and lodges have stylish boutiques). Also, dawn and dusk can bring dramatic temperature shifts so be sure to layer up.

IT’S 6 a.m. on a beautiful morning in Botswana and Ali Tiego, Abercrombie & Kent’s Resident Tour Director, is offering us some words of wisdom, safari style. Over breakfast at Chief’s Camp, an A&K Sanctuary, our group of 14—a few newly retired executives, a physician, a child psychologist, and an entrepreneurial family, among others—is debriefed. The agenda: game drives, game drives, and more game drives! Today’s mission? Spying the elusive leopard, the last of the Big 5 on our list—we've already spotted lions, elephants, rhinos, and Cape buffalos. By this point of our Ultimate Botswana Safari, we’ve been spoiled in all the best ways: jaw-dropping wildlife sightings, luxurious safari camps, exceptional regional cuisine, and the friendliest locals. We’ve witnessed a pride of lions on the prowl, stood just a few feet from elephants in the Chobe River, gotten so close to a massive Nile crocodile that goose bumps traveled up my arm, and sipped the requisite gin and tonic sundowners while a herd of Cape buffalo stampeded by us—the dust from their footfall creating a mist-like effect so magical, our group of chatty travelers was stunned silent.

Awe-inspiring. Life-changing. Soul-stirring. These adjectives highlight most any narrative on Africa’s natural power. And now I’d like to add one more word that sums it all up: worthy. Of your hard-earned dollars. Of your time and flight miles. Of your emotive oohs and ahhs—and there will be many. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, the bush will indeed, in the words of Tiego, “shake loose” another wonder to wow you.

Abercrombie & Kent’s Ultimate Botswana Safari is masterfully curated. Bookended in Johannesburg, this nine-night Small Group Journey (16 maximum guests) is overflowing with adventure, luxury, and discovery. So pack your A&K safari duffel (each guest is gifted one) because the best of the bush awaits.

From far left: The decks of Chief's Camp open to the floodplains of the Okavango Delta; post-safari sundowners are a tradition in the bush; a pride of lions spotted on safari at Moremi Game Reserve.

JOHANNESBURG

Clean, tropical, and rich in history, Jo’ Burg, as the locals call it, is South Africa’s largest urban landscape. The commercial capital of the country, the city was once a mining outpost: In 1886, two prospectors stumbled upon the world’s most abundant gold fields. Saxon Hotel —the former residence of Nelson Mandela and where he worked on Long Walk to Freedom —is a sophisticated way to ease into the wild. First up, a gourmet meet-and-greet at the hotel’s restaurant, where a professional photographer provides personalized safari photography tips, including the best settings for your iPhone and tricks for capturing Africa’s swoon-worthy sunsets. At the Saxon Spa, be sure to book the Saxon Himalayan Signature Journey—the foot soak, Himalayan salt scrub, hot stone massage, and rose quartz cooldown are a welcome, ultraluxe respite after your international flight. Also practically mandatory: a dip in the gorgeous outdoor pool before your first airport transfer into the bush.

GIVE & GET WITH A&K PHILANTHROPY

Just a short drive from Victoria Falls, Nakatindi shares a deep glimpse into the heart of Zambia. With the support of Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy, the village has blossomed—most notably through the construction of a vibrant primary school and a community-run bicycle shop. Engage with students in colorful classrooms, meet female artisans, and see firsthand how sustainable tourism creates lasting impact. It’s not just a visit—it’s a chance to connect meaningfully with a resilient community, where education, empowerment, and opportunity are shaping a brighter future, all within reach of one of Africa’s greatest natural wonders.

LIVINGSTONE, ZAMBIA

As we bump along a two-way highway to our first A&K Sanctuary luxury basecamp, we pass quintessential Zambia sights: colorfully clad women balancing water and produce atop their beautiful headdresses, porters carrying large goods (furniture, food, electronics) on rickety bicycles to Namibia, and wildlife “highway” crossings of zebra and elephant. Welcome to Livingstone, named after Scottish explorer and missionary David Livingstone, the first European to discover Victoria Falls in 1855. Here, walk at sunset with endangered rhinos in Mosioa-Tunya National Park, one of the few places in Africa where this is possible (the rhinos are protected by armed guards due to poaching threats). While the park is beyond incredible, my favorite experience in Livingstone turns out to be a visit to the local village of Nakatindi, spending time with industrious local women who repurpose bicycles and create jewelry from recycled glass as part of A&K Philanthropy’s efforts (see sidebar on opposite page). Other standouts include an adrenaline-boosting heli flight (an additional cost, but well worth it) through the canyons surrounding Victoria Falls and a visit to the Livingstone Museum, which houses rare colonial maps and artifacts from Zambia’s independence. As for the wildlife, river safaris along the gorgeous Zambezi River (which flows through six countries) reveal rare birds, crocs, pods of hippos, and elephants.

THE STAY: Sussi & Chuma Lodge, an A&K Sanctuary

Nestled amid ebony and jackalberry trees on a gorgeous Zambezi River bend, Sussi & Chuma Lodge exudes a refined treehouse vibe. Twelve chic, air-conditioned treehouses are perched on stilts, each with private decks gazing over hippodotted waters. Interiors feature natural textures and local art, plus rain showers, freestanding tubs, and mosquito-netted king beds. Wooden walkways connect to a spa, a pool at the edge of the river, and an open-air lounge.

Opposite: Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy supports the Zambian village of Nakatindi, where local women run the bike shop. Clockwise, from top left: Sussi & Chuma Lodge, an A&K Sanctuary, sits along the Zambezi River; poolside views at Sussi & Chuma Lodge; treehouse dining at Sussi & Chuma Lodge.

VICTORIA FALLS, ZIMBABWE & CHOBE NATIONAL

PARK, BOTSWANA

It’s not every day that you get to take in the world’s largest sheet of water. Named Mosi-oa-Tunya , “the smoke that thunders,” Victoria Falls stretches over Zambia and Zimbabwe—a mesmerizing artery that’s one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A rainforest walk traversing the falls offers a straight-on perspective of this 5,500-foot-wide wonder plummeting nearly 355 feet into the Batoka Gorge. And thanks to the steady mist, you’re almost guaranteed to see full-circle rainbows, especially in the morning. Refuel at The Lookout Café , perched high above the Zambezi River. While enjoying local beef and produce, you’ll watch daredevil bungee jumpers tackle Batoka Gorge. Come dusk, a river safari awaits. While silently gliding along the brilliant Chobe River , we discover a herd of elephants drinking at water’s edge—an unforgettable sight as the sun dips into the horizon and paints the sky in a wash of pastel hues.

THE STAY:

Chobe Chilwero Lodge, an A&K Sanctuary

Dramatically perched atop a hillside just outside of Chobe National Park, Chobe Chilwero Lodge features soaring thatch-roofed elegance with sweeping river and floodplain panoramas. Each secluded, airconditioned thatched suite is designed with sunken baths, indoor and outdoor showers, and private terraces framed by hammocks. Days unfold over game drives, river cruises, spa treatments, and gourmet meals under sun-dappled trees. Soft-toned interiors blend African artifacts with modern comfort for a feel that’s both serene and grand.

KEEP ACTIVE

Being on safari is spectacular, but you’ll spend ample time in tricked-out Land Cruisers. If you’re hoping to keep moving between game drives, A&K features inroom yoga mats, weights, and jump ropes. Rise early and you’ll be rewarded with the waking land calls of birds, hyenas, and lions—a workout playlist like no other.

TIP #2

CHOBE NATIONAL PARK & OKAVANGO DELTA, BOTSWANA

“Game hunting is like fishing,” says Tiego, our Resident Tour Director. “You never know what you’re going to find.” We’re en route to the famous Stanley’s Camp, a private concession bordering the southern section of the Moremi Game Reserve, and only accessed by small bush planes. A dazzle of zebras welcome us from the air strip, and Tiego points out heart-shaped fever berries, explaining how bushmen use their seeds for medicinal oil. This is the game-drive setting of films and novels: Sustainable luxury honors 19th-century adventure and the beguiling mystery of the Okavango. The vast bush and the ethereal baobab and acacia trees that pepper the land are stunning, while the amount of wildlife is staggering. We are barely 20 minutes into our first afternoon game drive when we come upon a pride of 14 lions. As if on cue, two large females ascend a small perch to spy prey, the only sound the click-click of our cameras and whispers of awe while watching the beautiful predators circle the jeep, seemingly nonplussed by our presence. A moment that will forever remain etched in my memory, the sinking sun casts an orange glow over the pride as they play and nap. The following morning—the high-pitched cackle of spotted hyenas my wake-up call—we spot the very same pride on the hunt. Their success is an unfortunate daybreak for a wayward warthog. Here, the bush is on full display, the cyclical nature of life and death both brutal and beautiful.

THE STAY: Stanley’s Camp, an A&K Sanctuary

Nestled on a private concession beneath majestic ebony and sausage trees, Stanley’s Camp brims with the nostalgia and elegance of Sir Henry Morton Stanley. The camp pays homage to the intrepid explorer with classic Victorian-style canvas design and a timeless safari spirit. Ten expansive tents sit atop wooden decks, each one inviting guests to watch wildlife from bed—and the resort's plungepool reflects the wondrous floodplain. Shared lounges, an extensive library, and a sundowner bar foster connection amid the wild.

Opposite: An elegant cottage at Chobe Chilwero Lodge, an A&K Sanctuary. Clockwise, from top left: Spotting elephants on safari in Chobe National Park; tented luxury lounging at Stanley's Camp, an A&K Sanctuary; fireside at Stanley's Camp.

OKAVANGO DELTA, BOTSWANA

Next up, our final camp transfer and the piece de resistance : the five-star Chief’s Camp, accessed by a gorgeous 20-minute heli flight that celebrates a bird’s-eye view of the bush (spotted: herds of elephants, giraffes, zebras, and plenty of playful warthogs). Tucked deep within the Okavango Delta’s pristine Moremi Game Reserve , Chief’s Camp is the epitome of safari elegance with sweeping savannah views, private plunge pools, and interiors that echo the tones of the bush with a whisper of modern glamour. Over the next two days, game drives deliver front-row seats to more lion prides and rare wild painted dogs. Back at the lodge, the camp’s stillness invites slow sips of wine under ancient jackalberry trees. Here, elephants saunter so close to the camp that they’ve been known to drink water from the outdoor pool, as does a thirsty male lion. Tip: Always have your camera at the ready, even in your gorgeous room!

SEEK SERENITY

Nearly every camp along A&K’s Ultimate Botswana Safari is designed with a gym and spa—the utmost respite after a day in the bush. Skilled local therapists employ healing essential oils during blissful massage and body treatments. Of top note is the spa at Chief’s Camp, a surprising oasis deep in the Okavango Delta.

Tiego doesn’t give up on the elusive leopard, which we continue to search for on our final day—even while headed to “Terminal 1,” a guest’s nickname for the tiny, dusty airstrip in the heart of the delta. Alas, the leopard eludes us, but as this same witty guest reminds our group, “You can’t come back if you don’t leave.” Forever connected by our experience in this land, we arrive as strangers and depart as new friends. When I share my gratitude for our adventure with Tiego, he smiles and simply replies, “Done and dusted.” I ascend the steps to the bush plane and look down at my boots, now covered in Africa’s vibrant soil. One day, if I’m lucky, I’ll return.

THE STAY: Chief’s Camp, an A&K Sanctuary

Chief’s Camp is wild luxury sprung to life, choreographed for the adventurous traveler. Expect high thatched ceilings, canopy beds, and teak furnishings that nod to classic safari style. Wide glass doors open onto expansive decks with private plunge pools and loungers overlooking the floodplains. Indoor and outdoor showers, deep soaking tubs, and curated local art add thoughtful texture. Air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and a stocked minibar invite modern comfort without disturbing the Delta’s quiet rhythm. Every detail—from the plush linens to the handwoven baskets—feels intentional, elevating the remote camp with a sense of sophistication.

TIP #3
Bermuda is completely surrounded by reefs. Opposite, from top: The island's cheerful Colonialstyle homes; hundreds of shipwrecks can be found along the coast; the pink sands of Horseshoe Bay.

hidden

treasures

Writer Alexandra Marvar explores Bermuda’s vibrant culture, stunning coasts, and shipwreck history.

TO many outsiders, Bermuda is simply a point on a mysterious triangle. But to people who have spent time on its pink-sand beaches, admired its long-tailed seabirds, indulged in its festive cuisine, been awestruck by its dramatic coastal cliffs, or dived into its rich history, this tiny island nation—just 24 miles long with a population that could fit inside Chicago’s Solider Field stadium—is a whole new world to discover.

As we explore the streets of the UNESCO-protected, historic village of Saint George’s on a Saturday afternoon, we seek out a Bermuda classic: a fish sandwich on cinnamon-raisin toast, believe it or not. Our search brings us to the harbor-front patio at the laid-back Wahoo’s Bistro & Patio. Iridescent, rainbow-colored parrotfish, a threatened species, swim into view and seabirds swoop as we stir our Rum Swizzles. Next, we walk a few minutes across the small peninsula for a look out over the wild Atlantic—and back into Bermuda’s deep history. Just 60 feet below the surface, the masts of the Spanish Navy’s Cristóbal Colón still stand. It perished on the reef in 1936, scattering wreckage across 100,000 square feet of seafloor.

Bermuda is completely surrounded by coral reefs, and for centuries, ship after ship met the same fate as the Colón while attempting to reach safe harbor. Today, there are hundreds of shipwrecks scattered along the coast—enough to earn this place the title of “Shipwreck Capital of the World.” While navigating these waters was once foreboding for seafaring traders, explorers, and battalions, today is a different story: From mid-March into November, this is a paradise for divers, snorkelers, and casual swimmers looking for a glimpse of the past amidst schools of tropical fish.

The Colón shipwreck, along with at least a dozen others, are accessible on guided underwater excursions. A few are even shallow enough to explore without full scuba gear. For example, the barnacle-encrusted bow of the Taunton , a Danish cargo steamer that sank in 1920, can be spotted within 10 feet of the water’s surface.

Strolling through Saint George’s, Bermuda’s shipwreck history is all around us. We pass the home and burial site of a captain who was granted freedom from enslavement by the British crown for navigating a naval flagship safely through the notorious Narrows. Nearby, at the delightful perfumery Lili Bermuda, one fragrance is inspired by perfume found in a wrecked colonial ship’s hull. And on the façade of the Towne Hall building, Bermuda’s centuries-old coat of arms depicts what appears to be the wreck of the Sea Venture , an English ship that sank on the reefs in 1609. The survivors’ subsequent nine-month stay became Bermuda’s first settlement—and, as legend has it, inspired Shakespeare’s The Tempest

According to local marine anthropologist Philippe Rouja, the popularity of Bermuda’s underwater maritime history has in turn led to de facto environmental conservation. A couple years back, while diving in search of shipwrecked bottles of Civil War-era wine, Rouja’s group stumbled upon another surprise: a thriving group of parrotfish, spawning. The area is federally protected to help preserve the shipwreck, but as Rouja explains, those measures created something unforeseen. “As a consequence of protecting it, the spawning aggregation was protected, too,” he says. In other words, just as shipwrecks are a main theme in Bermuda’s past, they’re also playing a role in its future.

It means “welcome” in Catalan, the beloved language in the capital city of Catalonia—a distinct region with its own language, culture, traditions, and fiercely independent spirit. Spain’s quintessential Mediterranean city, Barcelona is truly welcoming in every way, from the captivating light that bounces off the Modernist buildings to the shoreline that opens to the sea. Prepare to fall in love with Barcelona, just as Pablo Picasso, George Orwell, Ernest Hemingway, and countless others have over the years. It would be easy to stay here forever, but this is how I recently enjoyed three delightful days.

Day 1: Discover the Gothic Quarter

To understand Barcelona, start in the city’s oldest district, the Barri Gòtic. This maze of narrow streets, alleys, and enchanting squares highlight Barcelona’s layers of history—Roman, Visigoth, Arab, Kingdom of Aragon, and finally, as part of Spain. Begin your day at Barcelona Cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece and the quarter’s main landmark. Admire the soaring ceilings and lightfilled cloister with its resident flock of 13 white geese—a tradition going back centuries. Don’t miss the rooftops for some of the most splendid views of the city. A short walk away is the austere Plaça del Rei, where Spanish Monarchs Isabella and Ferdinand welcomed Christopher Columbus in 1493 after his discovery of the Americas. Nearby are the columns of the Temple of Augustus, all that remains from the 2,000-year-old Roman monument. The premier art collection in this quarter is the Picasso Museum, made up of five contiguous medieval houses. Picasso spent nine formative years in Barcelona, and the museum displays paintings from his early years as well as an extensive collection of ceramics. Be sure to take a stroll along La Rambla, Barcelona’s emblematic pedestrian boulevard on the western end of the quarter. Along the way, stop into La Pallaresa for classic hot chocolate and sugarcoated churros, and have a fun tapas lunch at Bodega La Puntual. For dinner, you won’t regret splurging at Edelmar-Hermanos Torres, the stunning waterfront restaurant by celebrated chefs and twin brothers Javier and Sergio Torres.

Opposite, from left: Barcelona Cathedral is a Gothic masterpiece; sugar-coated churros are a local favorite. From top: The bustling Plaça Reial; the iconic pedestrian boulevard of La Rambla.

Day 2: Surround Yourself in Modernisme

Barcelona is defined by its architecture, especially its Modernisme style, Catalonia’s version of Art Nouveau. Modernisme was fueled by a combination of industrial wealth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a Catalan cultural renaissance, urban planning, affluent patrons, and talented architects like Gaudí, Puig i Cadafalch, and Domènech i Montaner. To be clear, Modernisme drew inspiration from the past, myths, and legends—not the future. The bestknown example of this movement is La Sagrada Familia, Gaudí’s unfinished masterpiece and Spain’s most visited site. A work in progress since 1882, this unconventional basilica, a blend of Gothic and Modernist styles, celebrates nature and the Catholic faith. La Sagrada Familia’s interior, a forest of tall bent columns with light streaming through stained-glass windows, is simply breathtaking. The central tower will be completed in 2026, the centennial of Gaudí’s death. Just a short walk away, you’ll encounter a hidden treasure: Sant Pau, a hospital built by Domènech i Montaner, Gaudí’s contemporary. Walk around the central courtyard and admire richly decorated Modernisme-style pavilions. Continue to Passeig de Gràcia, Barcelona’s elegant boulevard in the Eixample district and home to three outstanding examples of Modernisme: 1. Casa Batlló, Gaudí’s best-known house in a riot of color with a rooftop resembling the back of a dragon.

2. Casa Amatller, a tour de force by Puig i Cadafalch that blends Romanesque and Gothic styles with the original furniture of a wealthy chocolate merchant who commissioned it. 3. Casa Milá, Gaudí’s surprising apartment building nicknamed La Pedrera (the quarry) because of its uneven stone façade. Don’t miss Casa Milá’s roof terrace, best appreciated at sunset. I have two more Modernisme musts to share. First, Domènech i Montaner’s magnificent Palau de la Música Catalana, with its stunning floral designs, stained glass ceilings, and sparkling tilework. Second, Park Güell, Gaudí’s best example of landscape architecture with imaginative design, undulating paths, and stone balconies covered with recycled tiles. For lunch, sit outside on the patio at El Mercader de l’Eixample, just a couple blocks from Passeig de Gràcia. And for dinner, the nearby Gresca serves Michelin-star level cuisine at affordable prices.

Opposite: Gaudí's mesmerizing Casa Batlló. From top: The famous benches of Gaudí in Park Güell; i Montaner's Sant Pau was first built as a hospital.

Day 3: Follow Your Bliss

What’s your passion? Food & wine enthusiasts should get an early start at Mercat de la Boquería, the city’s best-known market, where a hive of merchants sell fruits, vegetables, seafood, cheeses, and just about anything edible sourced in Catalonia. Once the market gets busy, continue to the recently renovated Mercat de Sant Antoni, housed in a beautiful Modernist building. Taste delicious tapas at various stalls and explore this authentic, less crowded market. Thirty miles away is Penedès, Catalonia’s premier wine growing region and home of cava, Spain’s sparkling wine. Explore the charming little towns and taste wine at vineyards like Codorníu, the oldest wine and cava producer in the country.

If you're an art lover, head to Montjüic, the hill overlooking Barcelona where two must-see collections are found. The MNAC (Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalonia) features a comprehensive survey of art, from impressive Romanesque murals to modern paintings. The museum is within the grand Palau Nacional, built in 1929 for the International Expo, with a spectacular cupola and great city views from the terraces. Nearby is the Joan Miró Foundation, the largest collection of paintings, sculpture, textiles, and drawings by the Catalan artist Joan Miró, a leading light of the Surrealist movement.

If you’re an outdoor adventurer, you’ll definitely want to visit the mountainous Montserrat area. Less than an hour from Barcelona by car, it’s home to the Montserrat Abbey, a 1,000-year-old Benedictine monastery and pilgrimage site. Follow scenic hiking trails from the monastery that reach heights over 4,000 feet—the panoramic views are well worth the effort!

And for your last meal in Barcelona, Paco Meralgo, in the Eixample district, is an authentic journey through Catalan cuisine. I highly recommend the gambas frescas al ajillo , fresh shrimp in garlic sauce. Pair it with a glass of cava and start planning your return.

The property has 120 spacious rooms and suites, many with terraces. During your stay, be sure to experience the Michelin-star dining, enormous spa, and rooftop terrace with a swimming pool. Tamara Littlelight Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada POSTCARD FROM...

WHAT EXCITES YOU MOST ABOUT INDIGENOUS TRAVEL IN CANADA? It offers over 2,700 authentic experiences that reflect the rich cultural worldview of our communities. This provides a pathway to meaningful connections and a deeper understanding of our traditions, languages, and histories.

IS THERE ANYTHING THAT TRAVELERS SHOULD KNOW BEFORE VISITING?

Indigenous Peoples in Canada are incredibly diverse, with over 1.8 million individuals representing First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities. There are more than 630 distinct First Nations and over 50 Indigenous languages spoken today, each carrying unique histories, teachings, and cultural practices. From the Arctic to the plains to coastal regions, Indigenous cultures reflect deep connections to land, community, and tradition.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO SUPPORT THESE LOCAL COMMUNITIES? Choosing Indigenous-owned and led experiences not only supports local communities, it offers a richer, more meaningful connection to the land and its people. The “Original Original” mark of excellence is a symbol that identifies businesses that are truly Indigenous owned, where the experience is created and delivered by Indigenous Peoples.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE LOCAL MEAL? A recent visit to Bernadette’s, the new Indigenous-owned restaurant in Edmonton, Alberta co-created by Chef Scott Iserhoff and Svitlana Kravchuk, left my taste buds wanting more. From the rich, fall-off-the-bone bison short rib to the unexpectedly delightful Spam gnocchi and the beautifully subtle sweetgrass ice cream, every dish told a story, rooted in tradition, creativity, and heart.

CAN YOU RECOMMEND ANY LOCAL ARTS, CRAFTS, AND GIFTS? Whether it’s a cozy pair of moccasins from Bastien Industries or a bold painting from Kamamak, each purchase supports culture, history, and Indigenous economic growth. Personally, I never pass up a stunning pair of earrings, whether they are beaded, made from moose hide, or designed with caribou tufting. They’re handcrafted with incredible care and creativity, and are always great conversation starters and meaningful keepsakes.

HOW DO YOU LIKE TO SPEND YOUR FREE TIME IN YOUR HOMELAND? I love exploring Canada from coast to coast to coast. A recent visit to Homalco Wildlife and Cultural Tours on Vancouver Island left me in awe of Canada’s natural beauty, especially when seen through an Indigenous lens. It sparked a deeper connection within me and filled me with a strong sense of pride. Tourism is so much more than travel, it is a powerful way to share who we are and what we stand for with the world.
