TACOMA FILM FESTIVAL

Music. Beer. Music.

We promise those aren’t the only themes in this year’s Tacoma Film Festival, but they are what our opening, centerpiece, and closing night films bring to Tacoma in a huge way. Taking on the energy and heart of our pillar films, this year’s overarching theme is FILM IS GO, highlighting the celebration and energy that the art form brings to cinematic audiences worldwide.

We are thrilled to bring festival circuit hit Luther: Never Too Much, delving into the life and legacy of R&B titan Luther Vandross as our first film. At the peak of the festival (pun intended), Tacoma filmmaker Isaac Olsen and producing team the Peterson Bros. (Walk, Don’t Run: The Story of the Ventures) bring us Rainier: A Beer Odyssey, the story of the clever advertisements that built a beer empire rooted in the Pacific Northwest. Closing out TFF, Chris Smith’s (American Movie, Wham!, 100 Foot Wave, Tiger King) Devo will once and for all explain the secret meaning of the band’s hit song “Whip It!”

Our collection strongly emphasizes NW filmmaking, with programming that celebrates our region’s talent and hard work in the art of film. We’ve also gathered stories that highlight our diverse city, nation, and world. We are local, regional, and global all at once in October.

Filmmakers are going to have a great time at the fest, with fun meetups, helpful workshops and discussions, and a city tour. A director might even be inspired to shoot a film at one of our epic Tacoma locations.

There is a trail for everyone to follow at TFF. See comedies, documentaries, dramas, international films, festival favorites, family films, and classic art house revivals, all with an intentional focus on support for NW talent and artistry. Let’s do this. FILM IS GO at TFF ‘24.

Welcome!

THURSDAY

Luther Vandross always believed he would be a star, but his journey to success was far from overnight. He began his career supporting industry icons like David Bowie, Roberta Flack, and Bette Midler. Despite earning platinum records and accolades, Luther initially struggled to break into mainstream success beyond the R&B charts. Driven by unwavering determination, he overcame personal and professional hurdles, ultimately establishing himself as one of the greatest vocalists in history.

Luther: Never Too Much is a heartfelt and joyous tribute to Luther Vandross and his music, resonating with profound emotion. For some, it will inspire newfound admiration for Luther, while for others, it will transport them to moments when his timeless melodies were the soundtrack to their lives.

Join us after the screening for an afterparty with DJ, a no-host bar, and desserts to celebrate the sweetness of Mr. Vandross’s supreme artistry!

Crack open a cold one with the epic story of Rainier Beer and the world-famous 1970s advertising campaign—designed by a small, up-and-coming agency with everything to prove—that put the Seattlebased brewing company on the map.

The new television ads, cutting edge in their simplicity and contrarian attitude to accepted advertising practices, immediately captured the imaginations of the entire region. They were quirky, zany, yet dry and underplayed. They mocked themselves. They pulled the curtain back to reveal their own stagecraft.

No one who witnessed these groundbreaking ads during their original 12 year run has ever forgotten them.

Rainier: A Beer Odyssey attempts to cement a new genre, that of pure advertising as art, the found footage film as spectacle, the educational case-study as comedy, and the transformation of brand itself into narrative.

This campaign not only redefined and revitalized Rainier Beer, but left an indelible mark on the national advertising landscape, and has come to define the very sensibility of The Northwest itself, now more than ever.

When a problem comes along, you must whip it. And when a movie about DEVO comes along, you must watch it. Jump back in time with director Chris Smith (“American Movie”) for the unfiltered truth about the radical and deeply political band from Akron, Ohio, whose origins tie back to the vibrant, civic campus of Kent State University.

Charting their entire career from the early days beginning in Akron, Ohio to their rightful place in the American music history books, DEVO looks back at the story of the eponymous band. Featuring interviews with the band’s living members and a nonstop smorgasbord of their subversive and satirical visuals, this documentary celebrates not only their musical legacy, but also Devo’s spirit of innovation and philosophies about the devolution of the species and the American psyche. Taking a front row seat to their undeniable imprint on the art of music and video on the late 20th century, audiences get to share the story of how Devo was championed and ultimately discarded by MTV, how they challenged the status quo of American idealism, and how they generated unforgettable tracks such as ”Whip It.”
