Zeitz MOCAA is centered around the transformation and repurposing of an iconic historic building, the Grain Silo Complex, into a world-class museum dedicated to contemporary African art.

Concept:A Place of Transformation and Dialogue they Inspired by the original grains of corn that had been stored in the original building they cut it out of the heart of that building to create the most compelling heart possible with those gigantic tubes.the design allows the user to pull them into the inside where curiosity would then do the rest of the work and admire a structure.the extraordinary structure help to give the project its soulfulness.

Program The 12 towers are organized around an atrium area and include balconies, open-air corridors and gardens as informal learning spaces. There are 56 oval classrooms in the towers. The circular design was vital, to symbolize an open area where professors and students can openly interact and share ideas.

Maggie’s Centre is a charity that provides free practical and emotional support for people with cancer. The 462 sq metre centre, located within the campus of St. James’s University Hospital in Leeds, is the charity's 26th centre in the UK and the first completed healthcare project designed by the studio.

The pillars of support at Maggie’s are the counselling rooms, so these were placed, like three pavilions, organized around a heart and at changing levels of the slope. The space between them accommodates the common areas of the center, resulting in an inviting open space, simple for visitors to navigate, connecting all the areas to the garden

Program Maggie's Leeds is designed as a group of three large-scale planters, built on a sloped site, that each encloses a counselling room. These surround the 'heart' of the centre - the kitchen - as well as more social spaces for group activities including a library and exercise room.

The studio looked at the qualities that make a building a home; the use of warm, natural materials, the way that objects are used to express individuality, the combination of private spaces and places where people can come together, and gentle l i g h t i n g .

1,000 Trees Shanghai Architects:Heatherwich studio,2011-2020

the studio came into contact with clients in Asia and was invited to design a large mixed-use development – including residential, hotels, retail, and commercial units – on a six-hectare site in Shanghai. the team faced the challenge of designing a 400-meter long building without losing its connection with the environment and keeping a human scale. The site was surrounded on three sides by concrete residential towers and on the other by the M50 art district and a public park next to the Suzhou Creek, an area that has suffered a gentrification process in which its industrial warehouses have been transformed into art galleries and workshops. The design is set out as an extension of these two elements, integrating art and vegetation.

Concept Development The inspiration behind the project is the Hanging Gardens of Babylon which made the team create another marvel of a similar aspect. The 1000 trees project is conceptualized as two mountains, namely the east mountain and the west mountain.

How The concept evolved 1000 Trees is conceived not only as a building but as a piece of topography and takes the form of two tree-covered mountains. The total buildable area is fragmented along a three-dimensional grid that rises gradually from the river and is cut abruptly to create a recognizable facade towards the art district.

Instead of hiding the columns that make this geometry possible, they are given prominence and are expressed as ‘trees’ supporting planters throughout on the outside of the buildings. This solution, aside from creating a defining aesthetic element, is structurally efficient because the planters transmit loads directly to the foundations. The facade materials also help reduce the scale and create a domestic image. The hand-crafted finish of the columns, with convex curves merged with concave ones, creates a changing and apparently randomized surface, enriching the tactile qualities of the building.

Programs The west mountain that is completed has 9 storeys which comprise a food court and supermarket in the basement, shops until 5th floor and restaurants on the rest 4 upper floors. The east mountain is expected to be completed in the coming two years with a 19 storeys structure comprising a 200-room hotel and 50,000sqm of office space. The two mountains will be connected with a ground floor drop-off and an enclosed bridge. Along with all these amenities, it will include an art theater restaurant with an attached bookstore to encourage performing arts and local music.

Planning the Green Oasis The rotated nine-meter grid is the structural concept behind the design and provides views of the city of Shanghai and scale breakage to the form. The grid of concrete columns is at a 45-degree angle from the river and each column acts as a planter, which is the major distinguishing feature of the 1000 trees project. The soil moisture and plant health is taken care of with a hidden irrigation system in the columns. The trees include 70 different varieties, evergreen, deciduous, fruit trees, flowering trees along with shrubs and hanging plants being a few typologies.
