Quante declinazioni può conoscere l’arte? Tra le infinite sfumature con cui l’artista plasma la propria visione del mondo abbiamo cercato d’indagare le vie per cui si snodano le suggestioni di cinque scultori.

Cinque. Un numero non certo casuale. Un numero simbolicamente evocativo che fin dai tempi antichi è associato all’atto di sperimentare, alla conoscenza concreta dei fatti, del cambiamento, del “mutamento di stato” di una situazione.

Gli antichi greci lo riconducevano a Hermes, messaggero degli dei, tramite tra cielo e terra. Cinque sono anche i sensi che fanno da bussola per l’essere umano nella sua esistenza: da un punto di vista emotivo, mentale e fisico, ad una condizione sempre nuova.

Il numero cinque è simbolo di una mente polimorfa, costantemente votata all’intelligenza e alla curiosità, porta con sé la tendenza ad avvicinarsi, a volte anche in modo pericoloso, a linee di confine, di trasgressione.

Il Numero Cinque è legato alla quinta lettera dell’alfabeto ebraico : Hey ( ‫) ה‬, che significa intuizione, illuminazione. I cabalisti, individuano tre stadi per la lettera Hey, i quali si pongono su tre livelli diversi, successivi, in merito allo sviluppo della consapevolezza dell’essere umano nell’arco di tutta la sua esistenza.

Il mistero della nascita, la totale inconsapevolezza con cui l’essere umano è “gettato” in questo mondo, viene qui superata dall’entusiasmo nello scoprire quanto di bello e fertile è presente nel mondo che lo circonda. Arriviamo, qui, a intuire quella misteriosa potenza all’interno della nostra esistenza che ci sospinge al di là della contingenza.

Ma non dimentichiamo che questo numero conserva in sé la forza dell’auto - espressione. E Infatti, le componenti fisiche corrispondenti alla capacità di parlare, sono esattamente cinque: lingua, denti, palato, labbra e gola.

Proprio per la complessa interazione tra intelletto e parola, il cinque suggerisce di utilizzare ogni tipo di disciplina interiore ed esteriore, al fine di “traghettare” la nostra personalità, da uno stato di disagio, di ricerca di un aliquid, allo stato desiderato. Solo governando bene la comunicazione, l’espressione di idee, sentimenti e fatti, è possibile giungere a uno scambio equilibrato e quindi crescere.

Una simbologia tanto intensa che trova le sue diverse impressioni nelle opere di questi cinque scultori. Armonia e contrasto, ricerca e sublimazione si fondono nelle loro opere.

La scultura riunisce in se il concreto tentativo di plasmare il mondo che ci circonda e allo stesso tempo di infondere ad esso le suggestioni che s’imprimono con maggiore forza nell’animo umano. Un’interpretazione di cui l’artista si trasforma in un medium privilegiato.

La scultura nella mostra tenutasi presso officinacento5 si rivela un tentativo di plasmare il mondo che ci circonda con un’ acuta analisi dei propri sensi e una declinazione fatta di suggestioni che si concretizza in cinque diverse anime d’artista.

to analyse the ways by which the perceptions of the five sculptors unfold.

Five artists: by no means a random number. It is a highly symbolic and evocative number which, since ancient times, is associated with experimenting, with the concrete knowledge of facts, with transformation, with the “changing aspects” of a situation.

The ancient Greeks associated this number with Hermes, the messenger of the Gods, the connection between sky and earth. Five are also the human senses which serve as a compass to the human being through his life: from an emotional, mental and physical point of view to an everchanging condition.

Number five is the symbol for a polymorphic mind, which is constantly devoted to intelligence and curiosity and has the tendency to reach extreme limits and transgressive boundaries, sometimes in dangerous ways.

Number five is associated with the fifth letter of the Hebrew alphabet: “Hey” which means intuition and illumination. The Kabbalists identify three stages in the letter “Hey”, based on three different, subsequent levels, regarding the development of human awareness throughout one’s life.

The mystery of birth and the complete unawareness in which the human being is “flung” into this world, are overcome by the enthusiastic discovery of the beauty and richness existing in the world around us. We thus succeed in understanding that mysterious power within our lives which drives us beyond existing reality.

We should not forget that this number withholds the power of self-expression. In fact, the physical components corresponding to our ability to speak are exactly five: tongue, teeth, palate, lips and throat.

Indeed, the complex interaction between the intellect and word is precisely what allows the number five to indicate the usage of every kind of inner and external discipline in order to shift our personality from a state of uneasiness and a search for an “aliquid” to a desired condition.

Only by mastering communication, the formulation of ideas and feelings together with the expression of facts, can a balanced exchange and personal development be achieved.

Such intense symbology is to be found in the various forms of the works presented by these five sculptors. Harmony and contrast, research and sublimation merge in their works.

Sculpture represents the concrete attempt to shape the world around us and, at the same time, to infuse it with perceptions, which impress the human soul in the most powerful way. By offering their personal interpretation and their acute analysis of their own senses, each of the five artists is transformed into a “privileged medium”.

works in molten glass and metal to create figurative work that's timeless yet thought provoking. A student of human form, she combines close knowledge of anatomy with a passion for fire and an unquenchable thirst for meaning.

Technically, Alexis is pushing the boundaries of what is possible.

Her glass figures are sculpted entirely free-hand while the glass is hot on the end of a blowpipe or punty rod. With work ranging in scale to life size torsos hanging in six foot tall steel frames, her largest figures are close to half her body weight and take a team of six assistants to handle the glass while she sculpts it. For her cast metal pieces she pours the molten bronze or iron.

While making intrinsically beautiful objects, Alexis explores issues of human nature, society, and the relationship of humans, nature and industry. Her hanging figures, for example, are an eloquent exploration of objectification of the body. The glass simultaneously appears like skin and evokes a sense of something superficially applied, like a garment. Cast iron “meat� hooks are a visceral comment on objectification of the body. The color on the interior of the torso being different than the exterior color suggests that if one goes below surface appearance there is more to be discovered. Steel frames represent conceptual boxes of perception that society puts us in.

Since receiving her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2005, Alexis has continued to study with glass masters such as Pino Signoretto, Richard Royal and Boyd Sugiki.

She has been working full time as an artist since 2006. Today she has work in museums, galleries, private collections and fine art shows around the world.

lavora in vetro fuso e metallo per creare un lavoro figurativo senza tempo ma stimolante. Studente di forma umana, combina una profonda conoscenza dell'anatomia con la passione per il fuoco e una sete inesauribile di significato.

Tecnicamente, Alexis sta spingendo i limiti di ciò che è possibile.

Le sue figure di vetro sono scolpite interamente a mano libera mentre il vetro è caldo sull'estremità di una cerbottana o di una bacchetta magica. Con un lavoro che va in scala fino ai torsi a grandezza naturale che pendono su telai di acciaio alto sei piedi, le sue figure più grandi sono vicine a metà del suo peso corporeo e prendono una squadra di sei assistenti per maneggiare il vetro mentre lo scolpisce. Per i suoi pezzi di metallo fuso, versa il bronzo fuso o il ferro.

Mentre realizza oggetti intrinsecamente belli, Alexis esplora i problemi della natura umana, della società e delle relazioni tra uomo, natura e industria. Le sue figure sospese, per esempio, sono un'esplorazione eloquente di oggettivazione del corpo. Il vetro appare simultaneamente come la pelle ed evoca un senso di qualcosa applicato superficialmente, come un indumento. I ganci di "carne" in ghisa sono un commento viscerale sull'oggettivazione del corpo. Il colore all'interno del torso è diverso rispetto al colore esterno suggerisce che se si scende sotto l'aspetto superficiale c'è altro da scoprire. I telai in acciaio rappresentano scatole concettuali di percezione che la società ci mette dentro.

Dopo aver ricevuto il BFA dalla School of the Art Institute di Chicago nel 2005, Alexis ha continuato a studiare con il vetro maestri come Pino Signoretto, Richard Royal e Boyd Sugiki.

Dal 2006 lavora a tempo pieno come artista. Oggi lavora in musei, gallerie, collezioni private e mostre d'arte in tutto il mondo.

Trarre bellezza dal vetro incandescente è un costante esercizio di equilibrio e forza che per noi spettatori ha il fascino del mistero alchemico.

Alexis Silk, ingaggiando una singolar tenzone con la materia, riesce strappare da un cuore incandescente di pasta vitrea delle creazioni straordinarie e uniche.

Il risultato? meravigliose sculture di luce dove la forma ha la trasparenza del vetro e conosce meravigliose sfumature di colore e luce.

La trasparenza del vetro ci svela esseri alati, pronti a spiccare il volo, oppure realizza un contrasto straordinariamente eloquente tra la grazia eterea di un busto femminile, dalle sfumature cangianti e seducenti, condannato alla gravità del suolo, avvinto da pesanti ganci metallici che brutalmente ne decretano la condanna a una prigionia forzata.

Questi ganci metallici sono per noi un doloroso contrasto di elementi e al contempo simbolo della condizione emotiva in cui ci costringe la nostra quotidianità: in costante tensione fra la leggerezza dell’ anima e la pesantezza del nostro dover agire per fini meramente materiali.

Una rappresentazione che subito ci ammalia e al contempo spaventa poichè, come in uno specchio riflesso, le trasparenze del vetro ci restituiscono l’immagine di noi stessi e del nostro mondo interiore, ci fa avvertire come non mai quel senso di costante tensione fra leggerezza e pesantezza, fra paradiso e inferno.

Il nostro essere diviene talmente fragile che il solo immaginarsi sospesi in questo limbo ci fa intuire il dolore della lotta, ne avvertiamo in ogni fibra del nostro essere una tensione.

Draw beauty from incandescent glass is a constant exercise of balance and strength that preserves the charm of the alchemical mystery.

Alexis Silk, engaging in a singular contest with the subject, is able to tear from an incandescent heart of glass paste of extraordinary and unique creations.

The result? wonderful sculptures of light where the form has the transparency of glass and wonderful shades of color.

The transparency of the glass reveals us winged beings, ready to take flight, or creates an extraordinarily eloquent contrast between the ethereal grace of a female bust, with changing and seductive shades, condemned to the gravity of the ground, surrounded by heavy metal hooks that brutally decree the sentence to a forced captivity.

These metal hooks are for us a painful contrast of elements and at the same time a symbol of the emotional condition in which our daily life forces us: we are continually dragged, from the lightness of the soul to the heaviness of our having to act for purely material purposes.

A fight that immediately captivates us and at the same time frightening. as in a reflected mirror, the transparencies of glass give us the image of ourselves and of our inner world, making us feel as never before that sense of constant tension between lightness and heaviness, between heaven and hell.

Our Being becomes so fragile that if only one imagines itself suspended in this limbo, it senses the pain of struggle and feels a tension in every fiber of us.

The glass sculptures of Alexis Silk, compensating delicacy and strength, are stimulating and reflecting to investigate the dynamics of our everyday life: we are irretrievably at the mercy of opposing forces and irrepressible and, facing them, we find ourselves to have the fragility of the glass but also its exceptional capacity for metamorphosis

Michał Jackowski graduated from the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts in Poland. In the centre of his compositions there are people, their spiritual condition and interpersonal relations. By using timeless, classical aesthetics Michał visualises everlasting problems with which everyone needs to confront. Classical elements go hand in hand with those borrowed from the world of pop-culture and encourage the viewers to reflect upon themselves as well as their here and now.

Michał Jackowski si è diplomato all'Accademia di Belle Arti di Varsavia in Polonia. Al centro delle sue composizioni ci sono le persone, la loro condizione spirituale e le relazioni interpersonali.

Usando un'estetica classica senza tempo, Michał visualizza i problemi con cui tutti noi , in ogni epoca, dobbiamo confrontarsi. Gli elementi classici vanno di pari passo con quelli presi in prestito dal mondo della cultura pop e incoraggiano gli spettatori a riflettere su se stessi e sul loro hic et nunc.

The artist, deeply rooted in the traditions of antiquity, binds the latter with our modern mythology of consumerism. His endeavours often result in vivid, striking works. Among the principal characters of his objects one can count both the ideas like beauty personified by Aphrodite or narcissism embodied by ancient god Apollo as well as common “Everyman” pictured via unindividualised, classical female and male faces.

L’artista, profondamente radicato nelle tradizioni dell'antichità, riesce a reinterpretarle alla luce della nostra moderna mitologia del consumismo.

Pop art symbols including speech balloons, chewing gums or the Beatles song lyrics juxtaposed with the above elements result in deep, intriguing and contrasting relationship, which, as the artist hopes, will inspire viewers to start a meaningful dialogue with the art works.

In 2017 his sculptures were awarded by the jury of the Florence Biennale and received the special mention of the jury.

I suoi sforzi spesso si traducono in opere vivide e sorprendenti. Tra le principali caratterizzazioni si possono annoverare sia le personaggi classici Afrodite, incarnazione della Bellezza o il narcisismo incarnato dall'antico dio Apollo, sia l’uomo comune "Everyman" rappresentato da volti femminili e femminili non individualizzati, classici.

I simboli della pop art, tra cui fumetti, o le canzoni dei Beatles giustapposti ai suddetti elementi danno vita a un rapporto profondo, intrigante e contrastante, che, come spera l'artista, ispirerà gli spettatori a iniziare un dialogo significativo con le opere d'arte.

Nel 2017 le sue sculture sono state premiate dalla giuria della Florence Biennale e hanno ricevuto la menzione speciale della giuria.

Lo sappiamo: l’arte contemporanea è spesso complicata. Al giorno d’oggi non è facile capirla e amarla. Molto spesso essa ha lasciato il posto alla provocazione, all’esisgenza di portare a conseguenze estreme dei concetti che risultano a noi spettatori fumosi e poco fruibili. Brutali e al contempo sterili.

Ma davvero dobbiamo riflettere sul nostro mondo e sulla nostra società rinunciando alla Bellezza? Perchè non renderla nostra alleata? Utilizzarla come punto di partenza per riflettere e cambiare le carte in tavola?

Michal Jackovski riparte da un concetto d’arte classicista ma sa toccare il nostro animo, con la perfezione armonica delle forme ma, al contempo, farci riflettere sulla nostra contemporaneità. Giocando con i modelli dell’arte antica, lui fa affiorare in noi nuove domande, ci spinge a ricercare nuove risposte.

Ed è così, che ammirando le sue sculture, ritroviamo anche noi stessi.

Nasce così la sua Serie Antique Games: mitizzazione della società in cui viviamo affetta da uno sfrenato consumismo che fagocita tutto: gli oggetti, le mode ma anche i sentimenti, le relazioni interpersonali e... l’arte.

Come uscirne vivi? Michal ci suggerisce una via facendo di questi Giochi Antichi un mezzo per reintepretare l’arte e riscoprire che attraverso l’espressività e il Bello si può riflettere sulla società contemporanea senza esserne fagogitati.

Esercizio estetico e, al contempo, meditazione sulla nostra condizione attuale.

Forse ritroveremo quella scintilla di Infinito che ci portiamo dentro e che, troppo spesso è ricoperta dalla polvere fuligginosa di una routine incalzante, che non lascia tempo, nemmeno per riflettere.

Tutto ciò di cui abbiamo bisogno sarebbe fermarci e porre delle domande a noi stessi.

Magari proprio scoprendo qualcosa di noi e della nostra esistenza in una delle sculture Jackowski ha creato per noi.

Il risultato? Un Gioco Antico più “contemporaneo” di molti altri “giochi” che popolano l’Arte al giorno d’oggi e che riesce a farci riflettere su noi stessi e il mondo in cui siamo immersi senza rinunciare a farci risplendere di Bellezza.

Ed ecco che la Sfida ci è lanciata, e non possiamo più tornare indietro ma giocare: confrontarci con queste opere sarà un pò come guardarsi allo specchio. L’essenziale sarà essere pronti a mettere in discussione noi stessi...

We know it well: contemporary art is often complicated. Nowadays it is not easy to understand and love it. Very often it has given way to provocation, to the urgency of leading to extreme consequences of the concepts that are smoky and not very usable. Brutal and, at the same time, sterile.

But do we really have to reflect on our world and on our society by renouncing Beauty? Why not make it our ally? Use it, as a starting point, to reflect and change the cards on the table?

Michal Jackovski starts from a classicist concept of art but knows how to touch our soul, with the harmonious perfection of the forms but, at the same time, make us reflect on our contemporaneity.

Playing with the models of ancient art, he brings new questions to us, pushes us to search for new answers. And that is how, by admiring his sculptures, we also find ourselves.

With these assumptions, its Antique Games Series is born: mythology of the society in which we live, affected by an unbridled consumerism that engulfs everything: objects, fashions but also feelings, interpersonal relationships and ... art.

How to get out alive? Michal suggests a way for us.

He makes these Ancient Games a means of reinterpreting art and rediscovering that through expressiveness and Beauty, one can reflect on contemporary society without being sucked into it.

An aesthetic exercise and, at the same time, meditation on our current condition.

Perhaps we will find that spark of Infinity that we carry inside and which, too often, is covered by the sooty dust of a pressing routine, which leaves no time, not even to reflect.

All we need to do is stop and ask ourselves some questions.

Maybe just discovering something about us and our existence in one of the sculptures Jackowski created for us.

And what about the result? An Old Game more “contemporary” many other “games” that populate the art nowadays, and that can make us think about ourselves and the world in which we are immersed without sacrificing to make us glow with beauty.

Now the Challenge is launched, and we can not go back but play: confronting these works will be a bit like looking in the mirror. The essential thing will be to be ready to inner analyse ourselves ...

The leitmotif of this cycle is a union between a woman and a man, their complementarity and permeation. Here, together with the corporeal integrity the artist explores their spiritual solidarity. We can see this attempt in the portrait of a couple, captured in a melancholic, dreamy pose, which strives for emotional and physical intimacy. Therefore, they overcome the distance between each other, as well as the limitations of the ties that confine them. Their struggles can be seen both as a literal and a metaphorical depiction of the everlasting energy between feminine and masculine elements present in the nature.

Possiamo vedere questo tentativo nel ritratto di una coppia, catturato in una posa malinconica e sognante, che lotta per l'intimità emotiva e fisica. She was born in Ankara, Turkey. After having her primary, secondary and high school education in a private school named,Ted Ankara College, she went to Hacettepe University, English Language and Teaching Department. After graduating from there, She also attend to Anadolu University, Public Relations Department and graduated from there with an honors degree.

È nata ad Ankara, in Turchia. Dopo aver frequentato la scuola primaria, secondaria e superiore in una scuola privata chiamata Ted Ankara College, è andata all'Università Hacettepe, dipartimento di lingua e insegnamento della lingua inglese. Dopo essersi diplomata da lì, frequenta anche l'Università di Anadolu, il dipartimento delle relazioni pubbliche e si laurea con lode.

But no matter where she goes or what she does, art was always in her heart waiting to be explored.

Ma non importa dove vada o cosa faccia, l'arte è stata da sempre nel suo cuore in attesa di sbocciare.

So 2007 she had started the Art History Classes with Art History Expert and sculptor Arşo Kasparyan for almost 4 years. Then she had started her sculpture classes with sculptor Arşo Kasparyan in her personal workshop for almost 4 years also. She had also attended to painter Valerie Çelebi’s drawing classes in her own workshop.

Così nel 2007 ha iniziato lesue lezioni di storia dell'arte con l'esperto di storia dell'arte e lo scultore Arşo Kasparyan per quasi 4 anni. Poi ha iniziato le sue lezioni di scultura con lo scultore Arşo Kasparyan nel suo laboratorio personale. AIn contemporanea frequenta le lezioni di disegno del pittore Valerie Çelebi nel suo laboratorio.

She had opened her first group exhibition on 16 December 2014, Art 212 İstanbul-Turkey. In order to try different materials, she also attended to Mara Gülersen’s Ceramic workshop and for steel trials she also worked with Sevgi Karay who is a very well_known sculptor.

Awakening. Un risveglio da un lungo sonno interiore che si traduce in scultura è il dono dell’artista turca Esin Çakır per noi tutti.

Privilegiati spettatori, ci accostiamo ad ammirare in silenzio la rinascita di un’idea d’arte nuova, che forte come ogni forma d’ispirazione appena nata, metterà le ali verso luoghi dell’animo straordinari. L’arte di Esin Çakır ci porta, lontano, sempre piu’ in alto sino a sfiorare il mondo delle idee...

Andremo con lei?

Fermiamoci ad ammirarle. Non potremmo vedere disgiunte queste tre sculture: in esse il bel volto femminile è l’elemento ricorrente di quello che potremmo senz’altro definire come un trittico ideale, ma qualcosa evolve in esse, si fa mutamento.

Esin ci rivela una femminilità delicata che si fa tratto eloquente e forma carezzevole nel delineare un volto dagli occhi chiusi che sorride celando in silenzio il segreto di una nuova ispirazione artistica.

Ed ecco che arriva il momento: rapiti dal silenzio che prelude ogni grande rinascita, vediamo finalmente germogliare una nuova idea.

I tratti scolpiti sembrano farsi più concentrati e noi accogliamo il privilegio e la consapevolezza di essere spettatori di un mistero.

Un’ala, simile a quella di una creatura ultra terrena, sembra sbucare da una tempia della donna e brillare incerta e fragile, come ogni concetto appena nato.

Il miracolo di una mente che si risveglia e lancia un nuovo sguardo sul mondo sta prendendo forma dinnanzi a noi e il nostro animo si fa più attento pronto a cogliere, nella seconda scultura, quell’ala che sembra finalmente dispiegarsi, lasciare intravedere qualcosa.

L’ispirazione sta per raggiungere il suo culmine, vorremmo lasciarci andare a grida di stupore ma l’artista si porta un’indice alle labbra, per invitarci al silenzio della contemplazione infine, nel terzo movimento di questo trittico è proprio la sua epifania, l’apparire della sua fulgida e bellissima personificazione.

Tutto si è compiuto: In punta di piedi abbiamo partecipato alla nascita dell’Idea e insieme all’artista, siamo stati non semplici spettatori, ma protagonisti, di un miracolo...

We could not see these three sculptures disjointed; in them the beautiful female face is the recurring element of what we could certainly define as an ideal triptych, but something evolves in them, do change.

In her sculptures, Esin reveals a delicate femininity that becomes eloquent and caressing in delineating a face with closed eyes that smiles in silently cultivating the secret of a new artistic inspiration.

And here comes the moment: kidnapped by the silence that precedes every great rebirth, we finally see a new idea sprout. The sculptured features seem to be more focused and we accept the privilege and the awareness of being spectators of a mystery.

A wing, similar to that of an otherworldly creature, seems to emerge from a woman’s temple and shine uncertain and fragile, like any newborn concept.

The miracle of a mind that awakens and see for the first time the world around is taking shape before us and our mind becomes more attentive ready to grasp, in the second sculpture the wing that seems to finally unfold, to let something glimpse.

The inspiration is reaching its climax and we would like to let ourselves go to cries of amazement but the artist brings an index to the lips, to invite us to the silence of contemplation, in the third movement of this triptych is precisely its epiphany, to appear with a shiny and beautiful personification.

“Te devi fare l’artista” mi disse Placido Castaldi. Ed io lo ascoltai. “Artista”, mi spiegò anni dopo Aldo Flecchia, “è un po’ presuntuoso. Io mi ritengo semplicemente uno scultore” . “ La storia, ” afferma Giorgio Perazzone, “ da torto o ragione ad ognuno di noi”. Tre persone: tre pietre miliari nel mio percorso.

“Riesci a vivere d’arte ?” mi viene spesso chiesto: “Certo che sì”, rispondo “ senza, potrei solo sopravvivere. Da bambina disegnavo su una lavagnetta. Da adolescente disegnavo i miei stati d’animo su miliardi di foglietti. Nei frequenti spostamenti in treno, tormentavo gli altri pendolari perché si lasciassero fare ritratti: le più lusingate dalle mie attenzioni erano prostitute di colore.

Il mio maestro Placido mi ha insegnato a disegnare e dipingere dal vero, preferibilmente. Ho avuto l’onore di fare la mia prima mostra con lui, nella Biblioteca Benedetto Croce a Pollone. Ma, soprattutto, mi ha insegnato a scolpire : “Scultore si nasce, non si diventa” mi ripeteva spesso. “ guarda la pietra, osservala bene, disegna prima e poi lavora”. Da quando ho scoperto la pietra, non sono più riuscita a lasciarla. La pietra di torrente, dura come il ferro, imprevedibile, con le sue inclusioni è un universo di colori e di storia naturale, atavica, racconta storie di centinaia di milioni di anni: di magma e di abissi, di ghiaccio e di terra.

Creare una scultura è per me un momento di altissima concentrazione. La mucronite, il serpentino o il granito non sono come creta o marmo, ai quali bravissimi artisti o scultori impongono anima e forma, ma esigono ascolto, dialogo e una continua ricerca, molto simile a decifrare una forma immersa nell’acqua.

Mi rifugio nella bellezza della pietra, che ha atteso milioni di anni per diventare scultura.

Essendo io ben conscia di questa responsabilità, trasformo le pietre in quell’essere umano che ha in se le più grandi promesse di bellezza: la donna.

You should become an artist” Placido Castaldi told me. The most appreciative were the coloured prostitutes.

My maestro Placido taught me preferably to draw and paint naturally. It was an honour for me to show together with him, in the Benedetto Croce library in Pollone. But, above all, he taught me to sculpture:- “You are born a sculptur, you do not become one” he repeated often. “look at the stone, observe it well, draw first, then work it. Since I discovered stone, I havent been able to put it down. River stones, hard as iron, unpredictable, with its inclusions it is a universe of colours and natural history, primordial, telling stories of hundreds of millions of years: of magma and the depths, of ice and of earth.

Creating a sculpture is for me a moment of deep concentration. Mucronite, serpentine or granite are not the same as clay or marble, to which excellent artists or sculptors impose soul and shape, but they need to be heard, to be , dialogued with, to be consistently researched, very similar to deciphering a form submerged in water.

I hide in the beauty of the stone, which has been waiting millions of years to become sculptur.

Being fully aware of my responsabilities, I transform the stones into the human being that possesses the most promise of beauty: woman.

Cecilia Martin Birsa dichiara di non poter vivere che scolpendo "senza - afferma- potrei solo sopravvivere".

Ed è proprio questa urgenza irrinunciabile, quanto il respirare, che emerge nelle sue opere.

L’artista sceglie di liberare l’essenza della forma che intuisce già nel blocco grezzo, non senza lottare con queste pietre risalenti a ere geologiche antichissime come la migmatite, la peridotite o il serpentino che richiedono un vero e proprio atto di maieutica per liberare quelle forme che attendono in un dormiveglia, durato millenni, di essere risvegliate.

Un atto creativo fatto di concentrazione e fatica estrema in cui corpo e mente devono viaggiare di pari passo per far corrispondere all’ispirazione il gesto plastico, creatore. Gesto a cui consegue quello di plasmare stessi in un circolo virtuoso di compenetrazioni in cui l’artista riscopre la propria identità interiore attraverso il dialogo costante, faticoso, ma irrinunciabile con il blocco di pietra che per Cecilia, dà quasi sempre vita a forme femminili, in un riverbero di riflessi interiori ed esteriori In occasione di questa quinta edizione de Le Cinque Anime della Scultura Cecilia Martin Birsa ci regala emozioni autentiche e primordiali traendo ispirazione dai quattro elementi: aria, acqua terra e fuoco.

Dal centro della terra, il fuoco ha dato origine alla lacrima di lava incandescente di bomba vulcanica, espulsa direttamente dal ventre della terra e da cui prende vita il perfetto volto de La Negresse; dalla peridotite levigata per secoli dalle acque di un torrente si è liberata la figura di Nudo nella Lama, all’aria sembra infine precludere lo slancio di Paura del Cambiamento, in cui la dualità si fa motivo di stimolo, ardito richiamo a spingersi oltre i propri limiti, conflitto e al contempo binomio a cui non rinunciar e mai nemmeno quando è la nostra paura dell’ignoto a volerci condizionare e infine Il nodo in cui ci si svela un nudo femminile contorto nel suo doloroso ripensare se stesso, bloccato e appesantito in quell’istatne di stasi estrema, solo in apparenza senza uscita, ma che, invece, preclude ad una rinascita.

Cecilia Martin Birsa says she cannot live with art – “without it I could only survive�. From the heart of the earth, the fire has given rise to a tear of incandescent lava expelled directly from the belly of the earth: volcanic bomb from which the perfect face of La Negresse takes shape, a creature of fire and harbinger of strong emotions in us too we find admiring its dark and primitive shapes.

From a peridotite smoothed by the waters of a torrent for centuries the figure of Nudo nella Lama has been freed; here the stone has entered so much in symbiosis with the aquatic element that it has retained its reverberation in its color.

The knot reveals itself in a contorted female nude in its painful rethinking itself, blocked and burdened in that instant of extreme stasis, only apparently without exit, but which, instead, precludes a rebirth like a new bud that emerges from ground after a severe winter so our soul will also be able to free itself and bloom again.

Pantaleo Cretì nasce a San Donato, Lecce, il 3 giugno 1948.

Sin da bambino mostra interesse per il disegno e la modellazione.

Frequenta l'Istituto d'Arte di Galatina dove matura con ottimi risultati le sue capacità artistiche.

Dopo il diploma in decorazione plastica, negli anni 70 si sposa e si trasferisce a Como dove insegna al Liceo Teresa Ciceri. Si iscrive all'Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera ma la frequenta solo per poco tempo.

Lavora tutti i materiali, dalla creta alla pietra.

Nel 1982 vince il premio Mondadori per la scultura e l'opera viene esposta a Milano e Roma.

Nel 2011 partecipa, su invito personale di Vittorio Sgarbi, alla Biennale di Venezia con l'opera La solitudine di Cretì.

Pantaleo CretĂŹ was born in San Donato, Lecce, on 3 June 1948.

As a child, he showed interest in drawing and modeling.

He attended the Art Institute of Galatina where he matured his artistic skills with excellent results.

After graduating in plastic decoration, in the 70s he married and moved to Como where he taught at the Lycee Teresa Ciceri. He enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brera but only attended it for a short time.

Verve provocatoria e dal tratto intensissimo è quella dello scultore comasco Pantaleo Cretì.

Dopo aver lapidariamente dichiarato che “l’Arte è Morta”, con tanto di atto notarile, Pantaleo si lancia alla ricerca di quelli che sono i relitti (e che relitti!) che l’arte ha lasciato dietro di sè dopo la sua dipartita.

E allora non ci resta che chiedercelo: cosa resta quando l’arte di spoglia di tutti gli orpelli, smette di piacere a tutti i costi e si preoccupa solo di essere se stessa?

Pantaleo Cretì con i suoi bronzi sembra voler liberare la materia di tutto ciò che non è essenziale per ricercarne una spiritualità intrinseca che affiora e risalta per contrapposizione a quella verve caustica, a tratti provocatoria che è tipica delle sue sculture (pensiamo alle irriverenti sculture dei suoi vescovi affacendati in faccende tutt’altro che spirituali) Le sue figure scarne,emaciate, rivendicano per sè stesse la sopravvivenza della forma quel tanto che basta per comunicare il loro messaggio allo spettatore: l’arte è stata uccisa perchè nessuno più l’ascoltava, la guardava veramente, ne faceva tesoro.

Queste forme sono tutto ciò che resta, tutto ciò a cui possiamo aggrapparci per ricordarci che essere Umani significa, anzi deve soprattutto significare, anche poter alzare lo sguardo oltre il tran- tran quotidiano.

La poetica del maestro lariano si basa sulla sua capacità «di rovesciamento, di spiazzamento, di iperbolica e sorprendente contaminazione» che gli ha fatto guadagnare la selezione diretta da parte del direttore Vittorio Sgarbi alla 54ª Biennale di Venezia con un suo quadro: La solitudine di Cretì.

Ed è proprio dalla sua solitudine, dalla constatazione di vivere in un mondo che non sembra aver più bisogno di arte ed artisti che Cretì da vita ai suoi personaggi provocatori, spesso irrequieti.

Solitario sì ma mai solo, Cretì si fa accompagnare da tutti i personaggi che la sua creatività suggerisce e li plasma lasciandoli vagare alla ricerca di un visitatore da interrogare. Essi non si fermano: sbucano da ogni dove, germogli di sculture che invadono lo spazio della nostra coscienza e lo rendono fertile di nuove idee e di qualche ispirazione ma soprattutto, di voglia di libertà.

E l’artista un pò come il Don Chisciotte presente in questa esposizione, si staglia solitario in un orizzonte dall’arte incerta ma che egli non ha problemi a ripopolare con la sua creatività fertile e contaminatrice.

Benvenuti in un nuovo viaggio alla ricerca del significato perduto dell’arte e, un pò, anche alla ricerca di noi stessi e di una libertà perduta e...perchè no? chi meglio di Don Quisciotte quale compagno di viaggio?

After stating that “the Art is Dead”, with a notarial deed, Pantaleo goes in search of the wrecks (and what wrecks!) That art has left behind after its departure.

We need to ask ourselves what it is left when art is stripped of all the frills, it stops at will at all costs and is concerned only with being itself?

Pantaleo Creti with his bronzes, tries to free the matter of all that is not essential and seek an intrinsic spirituality that emerges and emphaiszed itself trough contrast witha a caustic verve, sometimes provocative, typical of his sculptures (think about the irreverent sculptures of the bishops intent on matters that are anything but spiritual).

His meager figures, emaciated, claim for themselves the survival of the form just enough to communicate a message to the viewer: the art was killed because no one listened to it, really looked at it, or guarded it.

These forms are all that remains, everything to which we can cling in order to be able to look up beyond the daily grind.

Cretì’s poetics is based on his ability “to overthrow, displacement, hyperbolic and surprising contamination” that earned him direct selection by the director Vittorio Sgarbi at the 54th Venice Biennale with his own painting: The solitude of Cretì .

And it is precisely in his solitude, from the realization of living in a world that does not seem to need art and artists anymore that Cretì gives life to his provocative, often restless characters.

Lonely, yes, but never alone, Cretì is accompanied by all the characters that his creativity suggests. he shapes them letting them wander in search of a spectator to question. They do not stop: they emerge from everywhere, shoots of sculptures that invade the space of our conscience and make it fertile with new ideas and some inspiration, but above all, with a desire for freedom.

The artist, like the Don Quixote present in this exhibition, stands alone in a horizon of uncertain art but that he has no problems to repopulate with his neverending creativity.

Welcome to a new journey, in search of the lost meaning of art and a little even in the search for ourselves and lost freedom and ... why not? Who better than Don Quisciotte as a travel companion?
