unleashing “You’ve Been Scouted,” this month right here, from ground-zero Syracuse. It’s a worldwide talent search – the outcome of which is decided entirely by fans. The program and production involves the mega-producer and Grammy® Award winner Teddy Riley who has worked with iconic artists such as Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, Pharrell, and BTS. You’ve Been Scouted is a user generated campaign in search of the world’s greatest talent. Mr. Farnsworth was gracious to take some time with me for a chat. Chuck Schiele: Thank you, Ted, so much, for being with us here, today. Ted Farnsworth: Thank you, Chuck. I’m happy to be here. CS: There are a lot of places in the world from which one chooses to plant their tree. What attracted – and thus, brought you to Syracuse? TF: I grew up in upstate New York in the Adirondacks and my whole family is from CNY area; Little Falls, Ilion, Herkimer, Baldwinsville, Liverpool and surrounding areas. I felt it would be great to come back and give back to the community and area that gave so much to me growing up. CS: Cool. Please share with the folks of Syracuse how you came to having ZASH located here in CNY. Why at The Hub? TF: Being an Executive Producer in Hollywood, has allowed me to take advantage of my connections and bring those same connections to Syracuse in regards to film, movies, TV shows, reality and TV shows, as well as editing in post-production facilities. I started looking at The Hub in Syracuse about a year and a half ago and realized it was a state-of-the-art movie production facility and that’s when I decided to make a play to acquire the studio. Also, it’s one of the best soundstages in all of New York not to mention just upstate New York. When I came up with the name ZASH, it actually was sitting in my office at the movie studio at The Hub...so truly that inception was born in Syracuse, New York. CS: ...an inspiring city, indeed... TF: Now with the acquisition of Lomotif, we are established as one of the largest video platforms that competes with TikTok. Our partnership based out of Singapore will also be doing many kinds of live shows, that will be shown all over the world. ZASH is an umbrella which many organizations will fall under, and I find it really cool from that this whole concept was created and formed right here at Syracuse. CS: Now that ZASH has offices here in CNY, what do you have to say to the people here about what you are bringing to the scope of our city and its culture? TF: When I first started bringing Hollywood producers here to look at Syracuse for movie production, I was shocked how many people have never even been to Syracuse! Growing up in the area, I just knew that this was a very diverse community with all kinds of great cultural and architectural buildings from all different time periods. CS: Syracuse offers wonderful architectural treasures. TF: This architectural element would blend well in the movie and TV business for live sets. CS: Yeah, I can see that.

TF: For instance, most people wouldn’t realize that there are parts of downtown Syracuse that look like Chelsea or Soho in New York City, and it literally would be 20% of the cost to film here as opposed to the middle of NYC! We have already done local production and created jobs in this area as well as Rochester to the tune of approximately 42 full-time positions, as well as around 150 part-time jobs during times of production. I know that will continue to grow especially on the post-production side. CS: That’s very exciting. So, what’s in it for our fair city of Syracuse? TF: I also believe with the vision we have for ZASH, we’ll put Syracuse on the map with movie and soundstage production. CS: That sounds pretty badass. It sure would be good for the area. TF: Our state-of-the-art facility will draw different production companies from Toronto, Miami, Atlanta, New York City as well as from Hollywood, Ca, Asian production companies out of Singapore and Hong Kong. To me that is so exciting to what we bring to Syracuse! Do you know what I was most impressed with in regards to Syracuse...was how Onondaga County from day one has been super supportive of anything we bring to the area. We’ve been extremely appreciative for the working relationship with the Onondaga County Executive, Ryan McMahon, as well as with the film commissioner Eric Vinal who has been outstanding and helping us along the way, navigating through the different parts of Upstate New York and Central New York. CS: It’s pretty fair to say that you’re successful. To what do you attribute your success? TF: I would say that it is fair to say that I have been very successful, but through that I have also had very big failures. CS: It’s part of any worthwhile endeavor, right? TF: I’m a big believer that you learn way more from your failures than you do from your successes. The lesson is how do you take those failures in business, and then turn them into successes in the future? I also believe

But it also comes with a lot of hard work, a lot of hours and a lot of risk! Where I attribute my success to is the people around me. CS: Amen! Amen! Amen! TF: I have an incredible team that are way smarter than I am. it’s so important for family to support you no matter what your options are. Whether you’re riding high or low, surround yourself with people that will always be there for you, as well as your close friends. Having longtime employees and associates, that to me demonstrates success. Recently my personal assistant retired after 39 years. I am grateful and have a lot of pride that someone would work with me for 39 years (laughs). CS: It certainly says a lot about you that your team is so loyal. I’m not going to go into it, but, this resonnates deeply with me. Thank you, Ted, for sharing that. Tell us about “You’ve Been Scouted!” It sounds like fun. It sounds big. TF: When I came up with the concept and created, “You’ve Been Scouted,” it was really a concept of looking at The Mask Singer, American Idol and The Voice. The Mask Singer I love because of the mystery...not knowing who it was behind the mask so that’s where I came up with the concept of You’ve Been Scouted, where we use the Lomotif platform The Mask Singer, American Idol, The Voice from around the world to find talent that can sing, but they don’t know who is scouting them and who is looking to have done so. It’s a whole mystery of what’s going on behind the scenes and then I look at American Idol, and how many stars they’ve created – just from the US. So now we are taking on our competition and finding talent from around the world. I like the fact that we’ve created the only competition, where fans actually decide who the next rockstar will be. It’s not left up to the judges, that’s really cool because it puts the power into the people’s hands. CS: What interested you in aquiring Lomitif? TF: Lomotif was really the type of company I was looking for to compete with TikTok. The whole short form video and user generated content (UCG) space is exploding. I believe that’s where the whole world is going in regards to the media and entertainment space. Whether it’s finding talent through singing, dancing or acting, the UCG space is where it’s all going to be done in the future. Lomotif was the top of my list for acquisition, and I felt that it would be a great asset to ZASH. This merger positions us in the world as a total disruptor in the media and entertainment space. CS: What are the prime qualities that “You’ve Been Scouted” is looking for? TF: The qualities we’re looking for with “You’ve Been Scouted” is a really great singing voice. Playing an instrumental is a bonus...but really it is one of the only competitions where fans from around the world can vote on who will be the next rockstar. It is exciting to me, not knowing exactly where this will end up! It’s not necessarily who I like as a singer or who someone else likes as a singer...it’s up to the fans from around the world to decide. To think the winner could be a child from India, Brazil, the US, Hong Kong and we would never know this without having this hosted on the Lomotif platform. CS: Nutshell: How does it work? TF: To enter the competition you upload the Lomotif app from your phone, then go to the You’ve Been Scouted section. Lomotif works just like TikTok. You create your videos, upload and share them on the app. It’s very social but we have patented technology for editing tools that have become very popular. LoMo has done hundreds of millions of installs around the world which is mind boggling to me of the numbers. But it really is for sharing in all different parts of the world whether it’s for; recipes, singing, dancing, theater, drawing, painting...it’s amazing to sit there and watch the talent from around the world on the platform. Lomotif’s biggest highlight is a patented tool that allows creators to edit and stitch together multiple clips.

CS: Where does one see the “You’ve Been Scouted” performances? TF: From the Lomotif app, “You’ve Been Scouted” has a leader page where you’ll be able to go to this section and see the people that are in the lead for winning the contest. Then you’ll be able to follow them and vote for them etc. as well as be able to watch future performances of what they do, and we will always keep you posted on how they progress. CS: Do you play music? TF: I don’t play any musical instruments. I wish that I took up one as a child, but I never did. I do however love all kinds of music. My favorite to listen to is EDM (electronic dance music), country, as well as jazz and classical. I love the diversity of music around the world from different countries. I love the rhythms of Middle Eastern music from India. I just think it’s so neat how music transcends across all nationalities, to all people around the world. CS: I see it as the great galvanizer. TF: Yes. I also believe when I created “You’ve Been Scouted,” that’s exactly what I keep thinking about: All the different diversities I’ve heard in music...around the world... throughout the years. Now we get to pull them together in one big platform of LoMo, and we get to experience and decide what we like, and that’s really cool. CS: Extremely cool. Downright badass. What role does music play in your role as a director/producer? TF: Music plays a massive role in all movies, even TV shows etc. When you think about some of the greatest movies of all time like Titanic, Céline Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” comes to mind. Her incredible voice and talent reaches into the emotions and the hearts of people around the world. Music can actually make a movie successful, and a blockbuster hit. CS: Could you provide any insight to musicians looking to break into the movie/television industry? TF: As we all know, it’s very difficult to break into the music business or to get that lucky break. We believe that’s a big part of what we’re doing with LoMo, allowing the average person that one big lucky break. What I understand from the movie business, is that if you think you have a song for a movie, the best thing to do is to go ahead and produce a recording, even if it’s not perfect. Create it and send the music to the producers. Utilize every contact you can to get it in front of the right people that will listen to it. Don’t oversell your song, just let them hear it. They will know right away if it works for one of their movies. “With You’ve Been Scouted,” as part of the prize winning package comes a recording contract, and a song recording to go into one of our movies. CS: I imagine you have projects in your sights beyond “You’ve Been Scouted.” Can you shed any light on that? TF: The vision I have for LoMo, is to turn the platform into the next TikTok. Part of that includes a very very grassroots project such as having a “You’ve Been Scouted” for actors, where you’ll have to act out your favorite role. Your friends will vote for you and we’ll award the winner with a part in one of our movies – such as a speaking part with Al Pacino, Bruce Willis or a Sylvester Stallone etc. Or, with people that I’ve done movies with in the past. It’s amazing that we are able to do that and pull this together as a totally disruptive media and entertainment company. Also, we will be doing “You’ve Music around the world Been Scouted” for dance, which

we have already done in India two months ago and now another one this month has had incredible success. We’ll also be looking for talent in writing scripts, documentaries, filming, producing...all the things where one has talent even cooking shows etc. With all those things, we feel that we will be the biggest talent pool in the world with LoMo. Those are some of the projects I have in my sight. CS: Now that you’re on the scene as a Central New Yorker, again, what looks good to you? TF: My favorite restaurants in the area are Olives Eatery in Baldwinsville for lunch...just a great charming little place. CS: Yeah, that place is good. Indeed, a charming lunch choice. TF: Also, one of my favorites, believe it or not, is Longhorn Steakhouse in Liverpool. I’m a regular at least a couple of times a week. Pastabilities is probably one of my favorite Italian restaurants and my favorite favorite restaurant in all of the CNY area is actually called Canal Side Inn & Restaurant in Little Falls. Great French high-end food! CS: Okay, Mr. Farnsworth! I certainly appreciate you taking time for us here at Sounds of Syracuse. Very generous of you. I’m looking forward to all that unfolds from your direction. Rudy’s Lakeside I checked out Rudy’s Facebook page, curious to know what might be new. Why was I surprised to see tens of thousands of fans – many of them taking the time to drop a rave review and share photos (that made me hungry)? Maybe Central New Yorkers are summer-crazy because it’s only three months of the year; maybe because it can be so beautiful, with blue skies, warm temperatures, and gentle breezes off our many gorgeous lakes; and maybe because it’s filled with memories of places like Rudy’s. After all, what’s better on a summer day for lunch, or an evening lingering over a sunset, than a heaping portion of your favorite fried fish, beverage, maybe some fries? Or if you’d prefer, Spicy Texas Hots, fresh scallops, clam chowder, juicy hamburgers, salt potatoes or homemade mac-ncheese? Yes, the menu is summer, it’s extensive, and most items can be made to order with toppings of your choice. Open from lunch to 9pm, Rudy’s is now in its 75th summer – and third generation of family owners – of being a highlight of a visit to Lake Ontario, and a staple for the people of Oswego. The first restaurant was opened by Rudy Gadziala and his wife, Marie, in 1946, the business passed to the current owner’s parents, Brad and Carol Livesey, and is now owned and operated by Jason Livesey. The idea behind Rudy’s is simple: good, fresh food (local wherever possible), well-

History’s Emanations A recent NY Times Op-Ed piece asks, “Can Silicon Valley Find God?” In a controlled study, doctoral candidate Linda Kinstler sought answers she knew to be programmed into two popular artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms. She asked Amazon’s Alexa, “Alexa, are we humans special among other living things?” Ms. Kinstler then asked Google, “OK, Google, how should I treat others?” After some follow-up questions, Kinstler received her answers. On July 17, after reading “Can Silicon Valley Find God,” using my smartphone, I asked Google, “is there a God?” On July 18, Google’s top three responses included a reference and link to Ms. Kinstler’s July 16 NY Times Op-Ed piece. Silicon Valley might not be able to find confirm there’s a God, but Silicon Valley can provide its users with information which might enable them to develop their own ideas about the existence of gods or “God.” Throughout history, priests, ministers, and teachers have provided this information more slowly, interpreting local texts and usually without reference to competing stories. I suspect Google’s algorithm turned up Linda Kinstler’s NY Times article because: A: the article was new and B: the article mentions Google. How might some future researcher interpret recorded histories from 2020? The records would likely mention Derek Chauvin and George Floyd, but would the record mention Christopher Martin? Christopher Martin is the 19-year-old clerk at Cup Foods who, knowing his pay would be docked for $20.00, accepted a bluish counterfeit $20.00 dollar bill from the 46-year-old, 6’6” or so, physically imposing, seemingly intoxicated George Floyd. I imagine Christopher Martin, with knots in his stomach, trying to quickly decide whether and/or how to refuse the fake bill offered by the large and more chronologically senior man. I wonder, how tall is Christopher Martin? I asked Google. Before I finished asking, Google responded that Chris Martin the entertainer is 5’11” and 6’1”. I asked again. Silence followed. Socioeconomics has long determined who writes what information into the record. The available records limit what we know and then, think to ask. Perhaps we need to think more about that.

Poor Posture Can Affect Your Health One thing I notice as people are out and about more, but honestly I see everyday in my office, is that people slouch. Yes you...you slouch a lot. Your posture sucks and it’s possibly affecting your health. Your mother was right again. Posture affects more than just how tall you
appear. Poor posture can create a host of symptoms from back pain, headache, fatigue, breathing problems, jaw pain and even knee, hip and foot pain, at least according to the Cleveland Clinic. According to the American Posture Institute, bad posture is a major risk factor for falls in the elderly and since falls in the elderly are a major risk factor for death...poor posture = increased mortality. So it’s not just about how you look...it’s about your whole body health. Most of the articles about posture on the internet are oriented around gaining height but my concern with your slouching is that it contributes to your poor health. I am a primary care physician not a chiropractor but both professions can agree that posture is important and working on your posture can have real benefits. So, your posture is bad but your grandkids posture is even worse since they are always looking down at their cellphones and there’s little chance of that changing. Here’s a simple test from the Mayo Clinic to check your posture...it’s called the wall test. Stand so that the back of your head, your shoulder blades and your buttocks touch the wall, and your heels are 2 to 4 inches from the wall. Put a flat hand behind the small of your back. You should be able to just barely slide your hand between your lower back and the wall for a correct lower back curve. If there’s too much space behind your lower back, draw your belly button toward your spine. This flattens the curve in your back and gently brings your lower back closer to the wall. If there’s too little space behind your lower back, arch your back just enough so that your hand can slide behind you. Walk away from the wall while holding a proper posture. Then return to the wall to check whether you kept a correct posture. There are a lot of options to help you work on your posture including some devices which buzz like the Upright Go and the Uposture which signal you if there is a change in posture...I have no experience with them and just ordered the Uposture to check it out. I often recommend to my patients that they consider a garment to help their posture... they are called posture guards. I can’t recommend any of them in particular but they are not expensive and you can get a good sense of what they look like on the internet. You can also go to physical therapy and work on your posture and sometimes they use flexible tape that acts like the garments and helps maintain posture. There is a school of posture called the Alexander Technique and we have a local expert in this technique...Kathryn M. Miranda...who has taught this program for decades. She can be reached at 315-412-4829. I don’t think any of us are usually aware of our posture unless someone points it out ...that’s why I like the garment idea...it’s a constant reminder to straighten up and fly right. I too am working on my posture...my wife and I are taking dance lessons in preparation for my daughter’s upcoming wedding and posture is the first thing the dance instructor focused on. Well, that’s what the second dance instructor focused on anyway...the first dance instructor fired us. That must tell you something right there. I have discovered I like taking dance lessons. My wife and I have been married over 30 years and I worry that things could get a little stale and dancing once a week together really gives us something to do that focuses on both of us. Thankfully she seems to enjoy it as much as I do. If you are in a relationship that in anyway could benefit from something new in your life, I highly recommend giving dance lessons a try. Our instructor is suffering enough...go find your own and...work on your dance steps and your posture at the same time.

Health Benefits of Moderate Red Wine Consumption Humanity has been consuming wine for thousands of years, and while the effects of intoxication, headaches and other negative ailments resulting from heavy consumption are well chronicled, it’s only in recent times that researchers have begun to identify the health benefits that moderate consumption offer.
What is considered ‘moderate’ consumption?
What passes as ‘moderate’ consumption varies by age and gender. For males, this is typically defined as up to two glasses per day, while for women and those above the age of sixty, it’s up to one glass per day. In each case, these figures are based on a wine glass that holds five ounces and contains twelve percent alcohol contents. The reason for the disparity, is the general mass difference between males and females and their corresponding metabolic rates. Below is a list of health benefits that moderate red wine consumption can offer.
Fights the debilitating effects of diabetes
Research by the American Diabetes Association has shown that a reasonable quantity of red wine may reduce the blood sugar levels of diabetics for up to twenty four hours, helping to alleviate the risk of heart disease for those with type 2 diabetes. The Inn Between I don’t know exactly why the Inn Between is named as such but I like to think it’s because it feels like a place located somewhere between reality and a dream. The prestigious manor house turned restaurant is located on a beautiful plot of sprawling farm land complete with a pond and the food that is served is nothing short of magical. The Inn Between Restaurant is located just a short drive from Syracuse at 2290 West Genesee Turnpike in Camillus. They are open Wednesday through Saturday with dining service beginning at 5 pm. Due to the fact that each meal is hand crafted to order, seating is limited so you will want to make reservations ahead of time by calling 315-672-3166. The first has to do with the freshness of the ingredients. There is a garden on site that is used in many of the dishes served. They also keep honey bees on site which truly adds a level of specialness to their honey butter that is served with their selection of fresh breads. Probably the most important reason why every dish at the Inn Between is so fantastic has to do with the very skilled chef making sure every dish that leaves the kitchen is nothing short of perfection. Chef Chris Cesta is a Certified Executive Chef, certified by the American Culinary Federation, who has won many awards over his acclaimed career. Chef Cesta is the backbone of the Inn Between and his love and passion for culinary arts can be tasted in every single bite! Kyle and I went to the Inn Between on a lovely summer Saturday evening in July. Upon entering the warm and cozy restaurant we were immediately greeted by the friendly
hostess and brought to our romantic table near the window. Shortly thereafter we met our friendly and knowledgeable server Mallory. Even though the restaurant was very busy Mallory made us feel like we were her only table; her service was absolutely exemplary! One of the nice and unique things about the Inn Between is that dinner begins with a super creative amuse-bouche, a single bite hors d’oeuvre hand crafted by the chef. Tonight’s creation was a scrumptious pastrami salmon served with an assortment of vegetables on a slice of toast. After hearing the scrumptious specials, we decided to start our meal with an order of the appetizer special for the evening, the Seared Scallops with a savory mushroom stuffing and arugula. The scallops were golden brown, sweet and delicious and the stuffing was the perfect complement making every bite absolute perfection. We also ordered the Baked Stuffed Clams Casino, whole little neck clams topped with bacon, pepper and crumb topping and served on the half shell, yet another excellent dish that was both delicious and attractively plated. Next, we were then served our

beautiful salads with homemade rolls and their famous date nut bread. Kyle decided on the specialty salad which was a beautiful salad topped with toasted almonds, raspberry vinaigrette with Gorgonzola cheese and a garlic tulie. I decided on the Caesar salad topped with anchovies (and I love anchovies!) For an entrée I was between the market fish special, a Chilean Sea Bass or the Tenderloin Steak Neptune. Mallory explained to me that this was a tough choice because those are her two all-time favorite dishes. Ultimately I decided on the Tenderloin Steak Neptune, a positively stunning dish with grilled tenderloin steaks, lobster, crab, asparagus, béarnaise and beef demi-glaze and served with whipped baked potatoes and fresh vegetables. This dish is equal parts beautiful and scrumptious. Kyle could not pass up the Angus Reserve N.Y. Strip Steak served with mushrooms and truffle butter alongside beautiful vegetables and whipped baked potatoes. He ate every single bite and said that it was one of the best steaks he had ever had! We absolutely could not pass up a dish from

The major difference is that too much of the Republican constituency is made up of white nationalists. To keep their support Republican leaders have taken the septic tank to unparalleled levels of degradation. Democrats have no problem with greed and money and swim among the filth. Thus, allowing the bribery and the leadership that propagates this very white nationalism, the very hate they fight against with false vehemency. Meaning: They have not made the connection between their love of money running government (which they deny but do not address with any measure of meaning) and their core value of equality for all. Today we are a mere remnant of our pursuit. Picking a party in America is like having to choose which horrifying creature you want to bed down with. Your choices are white nationalists or a Democratic party that claims equality yet pursues a course of greed which forces exclusion. The pursuit of money and power among a very few is the goal of our system. At any cost to the Country or our people. 2% owns half of our nation and this too is addressed with limited concern. The lower 50% of our people have 1.9% of our bounty. With half of our wealth in one place you take half of the benefit of a free land away from 320 million people. Equality with justice for the people cannot effectively exist within this framework. I am not looking for Socialism. I am looking for intelligent balance. Such as jobs. Secure Social Security. Health Care. A fair wage. Just clear common-sense decisions made with decency. With sound decent people running Government. Money must be removed or we are done. When one of “American intent” becomes an American leader, they are forced to acquiesce to greed and favor or be destroyed. This systemic horror is caused because of the low caliber of politician that money and bribery draws. That is high intelligence very short on quality and care for others. Government for the people is not in play. We do not have leaders engaged in that pursuit. Some have fooled themselves. But Government for the people is not possible in

The wonderful people that care about the party and its policies are outnumbered. The worst of us have found a home. Remember, Hannity, Ingraham, Carlson, Pirro and the rest are all paid millions to lie with emotional force and extremely convincing intensity. These types are truly the sewer of humanity. Their souls have been sold. They are brilliant. They know better. They are traitors. Their environment has tested them and evil won. If any of these Fox commentators went broke and CNN offered them the same the deal they have now, each would become a convincing liberal overnight. The death and harm they induce has massively seeded their paychecks solidifying their willingness to be sold. Rupert Murdoch is the worst human being America has ever experienced. Interesting note: Rupert Murdoch became a U.S. Citizen in 1985. It looks like the internet has been scrubbed re his son Lachlan, Fox CEO. He was born in Britain and lives in Australia. Searches I have conducted do not reveal if he is an American Citizen. It would be interesting to know if a foreigner is so greatly contributing to the destruction of the American experiment. Is it even legal? Fox today is serving the same purpose as did the Volkischer Beobachter, a daily newspaper published by the Nazi Party from February 25, 1925 onwards. In 1927 (paralleling the course of OAN coming to be) it was joined by Joseph Goebbels Der Angriff, another racist propaganda paper. In 1933 Goebbels was appointed Minister of Propaganda by the Third Reich. He served similarly to Hitler as Roger Ailes did to Rupert Murdoch, the owner of Fox. The German propaganda machine led by one man (Goebbel’s) focused on the perpetual belittlement and persistent propaganda espousing white superiority and hate for others. This course eventually won German support strong enough to look the other way, even during the holocaust. Brainwashing at its finest. I want this read so I am going to leave you with the bottom line as I have done several hundred times (over nearly 40 years of writing this column) as the Proverbial tree falling alone in the forest. If this could be done, only the best that humans can be would prevail and America would return. Believe me, without money satisfying cheating and greed the vile will self destruct. The following question I am posing to the House and Senate is the truth and the only answer. When in Gods’ name are you guys going to leave the peripheral and target the answer? “GET BRIBERY AND MONEY OUT OF GOVERNMENT,” then go back to what you do now and win with the finest humans on board. (If you agree: Please get some friends together. Develop a project. A very cost effective easy to do project for people of good will, working together. Develop a mailing list of all Members of the House and Senate in Washington. Do the same with Governors and State Legislatures. Perhaps if you like the idea, expand. Include media outlets. Book Banning A Short History A few years ago, in this column, I wrote a column comparing some children’s book series over time. One of them, of course, was the Harry Potter series, and I recall being surprised to learn that some parents objected to having the series in school libraries because of the “witches” and “wizards” mentioned in them, and the fears they had that their children would be influenced negatively by them. What I also found interesting
was the contrast to the Philip Pullman “His Dark Materials” series, which didn’t generate much discussion of a theological nature, though, like C.S. Lewis’ “Narnia” series, was much more directly “religious,” in the sense that Pullman took aim at religion/ Christianity, whereas Lewis retold the Christ story in a positive and child-friendly way. All of which is to say that there are books, and audiences, which generate a certain amount of concern, notably those dealing with religion and those aimed at children. But recently, and in times past, there have been periods of almost frenzied elimination of books from general access, and for sometimes incomprehensible reasons. One book that is often limited is “Mein Kampf,” by Adolf Hitler. It was first banned following Hitler’s death, the end of the Reich, and the defeat of the Germans in WWII. When its Bavarian copyright lapsed in 2016, it could finally be republished, and it became available again for study. Like many non-fiction books that cast a group of people as the villain, it has a clear and obvious flaw – and while that carries with it a risk, it also carries with it a warning. And therein lies the issue with book banning in general: do we try to keep such books out of the hands of the vulnerable, who might read them

as a sort of religious text, or do we hold them up as examples of “wrongthink,” and use them to demonstrate how words can be used to corrupt and destroy, and thus teach us how to think critically when confronted with their approach? In the Western world, the first major example of “book burning” was in A.D. (C.E.) 8: Roman poet Ovid’s Ars Amatoria (The Art of Love). He was banished from Rome for writing it, and later, monk Savonarola (a rather extreme penitent) burned it, along with some other books, in 1497. The book was banned by U.S. Customs in 1928. It was, in essence, not much more specific than Cosmopolitan Magazine in terms of its degree of detail, but it was a guide to love, physical and emotional. In 35 A.D., Homer’s The Odyssey was banned by Roman Emperor Caligula, as he felt the ideas of liberty expressed, though aimed at the Greeks, and written 300 years earlier, were dangerous to his empire. So now we have two themes that book banners have found dangerous: sexuality and politics. And, in 640 A.D., caliph Omar is reputed to have burned 200,000 books in the library of Alexandria in Egypt, saying, “If these writing of the Greeks agree with the Book of God they are useless and need not be preserved; if they disagree they are pernicious and ought to be destroyed.” And we have the third “big ban” – religion.
Over time, versions of The Bible, some of Shakespeare’s plays (or scenes from them), Robinson Crusoe, some of the works of the Marquis de Sade, and Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species have all been banned at one time or another, in one place or another. In 1885, Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn was banned in Concord, MA, as being “coarse and inelegant,” and more lately, has been removed from school libraries for featuring the “n-word,” which evidently is coarse and inelegant. In 1929, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes was banned in the Soviet Union because of occultism, though one wonders if that refers to the books, or the writer, who was, in fact, interested in the occult, and had a very public rift with Harry Houdini over spiritualism, in which Conan Doyle’s wife believed herself to be gifted. Perhaps the most infamous book “banning” was actually a book burning, and took place in 1933, when the Nazi’s set fire to thousands of books written by “Jews, communists, and others,” and included books by Einstein, Freud, Hemingway, Helen Keller, Lenin, Jack London, Thomas Mann, Marx, Upton Sinclair, Stalin, and Trotsky, among others. As late as the 1960s, Hemingway’s books were banned in Texas – though continued to be taught in other states in the U.S. – and this writer recalls being told about D. H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover, a book her class was about to study, having been brought up on obscenity charges as late as 1960 as proof of how much the 1960s changed the standards in both the US and Great Britain of what was “appropriate” reading material. During the 1970s, political books came under fire as CIA tell-alls became popular,

but by the 1980s, things were getting silly: the London City Council banned Beatrix Potter’s The Tale of Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny from London schools because the stories only featured “middle-class rabbits,” and in 1983, Alabama wanted to ban The Diary of Anne Frank because it was a “real downer.” Truth. In more recent years, both fiction and non-fiction political material has been banned, along with material considered inappropriate to Muslim readers, and books that used words that were, in fact, used at the time of their writing – but are now considered offensive – have been removed from the shelves of schools rather than used as teachable opportunities. As with “Mein Kampf,” there is always the risk of exposure: can the reader understand the difference between a bad idea examined, and a bad idea followed? And books like Harry Potter, as noted earlier, because of its focus on magic, witches and wizards, absent any context of the “Muggle” world (other than to acknowledge that it exists) have been called into question by parents anxious about their child’s runaway imagination. And so it always is with a book: a book is, in fact, a form of magic. When you read it, the world you step into will differ from the one that I experience, and what imprint it

leaves on each of us will differ, depending on our age, what else is happening in our lives, whether the story and the writer’s style resonates with us, and what we have been led to expect before reading. I read all the Nancy Drew books as quickly as I could find them – I have known young readers I could not cajole past the first chapter, much to my amazement. But then, I never liked Hemingway and argued with my 11th grade teacher about his genius – and I’m sure my 11th grade teacher knew a great deal more about literature than I. Certainly, libraries and bookstores should come equipped with “warnings,” at least as far as the maturity of the content is concerned. And that doesn’t just apply to sexual content, but extreme political and social ideas, as well. At the very least, perhaps parental permission for a 10-year-old to borrow or purchase something like Mein Kampf, or Fifty Shades of Grey would be wise. Historic context is probably a more difficult area to police – would it make sense to limit access to Little Women, or Gone With the Wind? Think of all the world lost when Alexandria burned. There must have been at least one good cookbook in the lot.

A Quiet Place II When thinking back to the most surprising films in the last 10 years, I’m not sure that there are many that would top A QUIET PLACE. Written, directed, and starring John Krasinski, who at that point was best known for his turn as the lovable Jim Halpert on THE OFFICE, the horror film was a revelation, delivering scares and thrills in equal measure. The opening sequence remains a masterclass in filmmaking, and the minimalist cast that featured Krasinski’s real-life wife, Emily Blunt, and youngsters Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe, was perfect, expertly crafting welldefied characters who barely uttered a word. While A QUIET PLACE easily could have stood on its own, it was a universe that I was excited to revisit. When tinkering with greatness, there’s always room for concern, but it was hard to fathom that Krasinski would jeopardize the

Written, directed and starring John Krasinski legacy of his nightmare-inducing masterpiece, and I truly hoped that he would only be on board if there was more story to tell. A QUIET PLACE II takes us back in time to the local convenience store that served as the opening setting of the original film. Lee Abbot (Krasinski) picks up a few groceries (with an ominous nod to the heartbreaking catalyst of the original) and heads to a little league baseball game where he meets up with his wife Evelyn (Blunt), daughter Regan (Simmonds) and neighbor Emmett (Cillian Murphy.) As Marcus (Jupe) nervously steps into the batter’s box, suddenly, the apocalypse begins. After a harrowing opening sequence that gives the audience a brief glimpse into how the end of the world began, the sequel picks up the very second the original film ended. With a new baby and two traumatized children at her side, Evelyn begins to search for other survivors. Though a method has been discovered by which to destroy the murderous monsters who are attracted to even the slightest sound, survival is hardly guaranteed. The family silently and solemnly sets out in hopes of discovering some sort of safe

haven. They will soon cross paths with Emmet, who has dissolved into a paranoid recluse who has his own bunker and methodology of survival. While he is reluctant to offer assistance at first, Regan uncovers a slight sliver of hope that humanity may not be quite as lost as they feared, and Emmett begins to realize that merely surviving is not the same as living. The original QUIET PLACE came out of nowhere to electrify the cinematic world, shocking audiences with its vast ingenuity. While the novelty of “what you can’t see is much scarier than what you can” is often effective in horror, Krasinski instead brilliantly utilized sound (or the lack thereof), effectively making it a character in itself. This tactic worked masterfully the first time around, but is virtually impossible to replicate because at the time, it was just so profoundly different. The key to the sequel was capturing the same essence as the first installment, but then telling a story that was so engaging, that its lack of ingenuity wouldn’t be viewed as a determent. Behind the performances of Blunt, Jupe, and Simmonds along with the alwaysexcellent Murphy, A QUIET PLACE II may not pack the same punch as its predecessor, but remains a suspenseful, edge-of-your-seat thriller that commands RATED: PG-13 attention from the opening seconds. The RU N TIME: 1h 37min creatures are as terrifying as ever, and this GENRE: Drama, Horror, Sci-Fi time around, Krasinski shows us, as many of the top-tier post-apocalyptic ventures STARRING: John Krasinski, often do, that the survivors can often be as Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds frightening as the monsters themselves. DIRECTOR: John Krasinski There are multiple converging storylines, Wri ters: John Krasinski all of which work well to establish a cohesive narrative, skillfully giving audience GRADE: A members plenty to squirm over. And, while this particular chapter isn’t quite as reliant on silence as the first film, there are enough jump scares and “gotcha!” moments to keep the adrenaline pumping. Where Krasinski goes from here is anyone’s guess, but with these two films, he has proven that he is a filmmaker worth following.

Golf is the Best Sport in the World Arguments as to which sport is the best in the world always generates passion and inciteful debate, with almost everyone believing that the one in which they participate in, is better than anything else. Perhaps surprisingly, badminton is the biggest individual ‘participation’ sport with 225 million players worldwide. However, golf comes very high on the list with over 60 million participants, and there are some very good reasons why we think it is such a great game. First and foremost, there is no age limit. The world’s oldest golfer is 103, and Tiger Woods started to play age 2! What’s more, because of the handicap system you can play on level terms with anybody no matter how competent (or otherwise!) you may be. You can compete with a professional – try doing that in tennis, snooker, or boxing.
You can get plenty of exercise, OK, it’s not the same as running a marathon, but on average in an 18-hole round of golf, you walk about six miles. When you consider that most health professionals agree that to keep healthy you should walk a mile a day, one round of golf on a Saturday or Sunday is near enough all the exercise you need for a week. Golf is also the only sport in which you can eat or drink while you are playing it. You can wander along the fairway while you eat an apple, a sandwich, a sausage roll, or a pizza if you like, although we wouldn’t advise it if you wish to score well. On some courses, you can buy a pint of beer. (depending on the licensing laws of the venue). Or take your own beverage with you. Some golfers are known to keep a hip flask topped up with whisky, brandy, port, or whatever their favorite tipple is, and celebrate every time they score a par. Or maybe have an extra swig if they get a birdie. Hey, you could even take a bottle of wine if you have somewhere to keep it chilled. Golf teaches etiquette and good manners. Golf can teach you many things, respect and good manners are just some of the life skills golf can educate you with and there are far too few of them about in the 21st century. There are unwritten rules, such as shaking hands at the end of every round, never walking on your partner’s putting lines, and the way everyone gets together to hunt for lost balls – unless they’re in the lake, of course.

Every course is different. You are out in the countryside – hopefully in the sun – with nothing around you but beautiful scenery, yet that aside, each course has its own particular ambience. Even your own local course differs from day to day according to the weather, the light, the temperature, the season, and more. You can play as many holes as you like. The standards are 9 and 18, but if you want to take it easy, you can quite often just play loops of five or six holes. Equally, if you’re up for it, you could play up to four or five rounds in a day, if your legs can take it! You can play as an individual, but you can also play as part of a team. You can have teams of any number you like. Pairs, three-balls, and four-balls are common, but you can make up a team with any number of players that you choose. Golf is hard! Golf can be hard to learn but also so rewarding. Not just physically but mentally. But it can also be frustrating, agonizing, and downright disheartening – especially when you keep hitting 100+ scores. For example, if maybe you just

can’t seem to break 90, however hard you try, and however many hours you put in. But when you do finally break that 90 it is the greatest feeling in the world! The brew is light, best served cold, with notes of honeydew melon, passion fruit, gooseberry, lime, and with that distinct dryness that Sauvignon Blanc wine imparts. Both Goses can be found at our local supermarkets. Lambic: These beers originate from the Brussels area of Belgium. The wort produced in the brewing process is cooled and exposed to the open air in winter and spring and then fermented in barrels and allowed to mature. Lambics are usually blends of different season’s batches – known as gueuze – and/ or are fermented a second time with fruits – mostly raspberries, cherries, and strawberries. Technology Through Time I had some fun today. I wanted to research the latest technology, and then I wondered: what is considered the earliest technology, or the history of tech? As should come as no surprise, my research turned up wildly different ideas about what it was and where it came from. If you don’t think something as concrete as technology (concrete itself a technology) could be in debate, consider “science.” If you asked 10 people what science is, you might be surprised at the variety of answers you’d get – and not a few of them would likely be more political than scientific. But I digress. The first answer was that it is some adaptation of a thing that made it a tool. Not just picking up a rock and throwing it, or a (sorry, Scots) stick, even a log, and hurling it. It had to be a purposeful adjustment, alteration, that turned the object into something more than what it had been, and that “more” needed to be suited to a purpose. So for this example, the suggestion was stone tools: “Made nearly two million years ago, stone tools...are the first known technological invention.” So, we have established that technology should be purposeful and useful. But another answer suggested that perhaps the thing had to actually be something that didn’t just adapt an existing thing to a purpose, but created something new out of existing materials, something that had not existed before. And that something had a useful purpose. Suggested were glass, first made somewhere between 3500 and 5000 BCE (or B.C. for us old-school daters). In 3500 BCE came the wheel (which I would argue was one of, if not the most significant piece of technology in early history). And in 3000 BCE, the Sumerian people in Mesopotamia began to write code. Well, only in a sense – they developed the first written language. One might think that, as a writer, I’d be inclined to say writing was the breakthrough development. My answer would be of course, it had enormous significance, but lacking the leisure that the wheel provided (allowing more rapid movement, transportation of heavy loads, adapted to beasts of burden), the time allocated to writing would have been limited. But even before that, at about 1 million BCE, humans had learned to use (and ignite at will) fire. Fire, while naturally occurring, can be classified as a technology when it’s used purposefully and usefully, and especially when used in the process of creating something new out of something else (like glass, which is made out of melted sand). Other landmark technologies: iron, gunpowder, the printing press, the steam engine, the telegraph, the electric light, the radio (and eventually television), the air conditioner (invented right here in Syracuse, NY, this technology opened up the Sun Belt to industry and livability) the computer, the Internet, and now in its early stages – AI, or Artificial Intelligence. A technology that perhaps isn’t talked about as much, but is as profound as any in terms of its potential for both good and ill is CRISPR. This gene-editing technology can remove harmful gene sequences, but can also insert others. As with fire (and

the Olympian Gods punishment for Prometheus for having shared it with humans), this powerful technology can be used for great good, and potentially for great harm – or for curiosity, which, as we know, killed the cat. And that might qualify as our third requirement to be a significant technology: it’s a game changer. Going back to the example of the wheel, we see that it was deliberately crafted from raw materials (wood or stone); it served a useful purpose; and it changed the way life could be lived. Now, a “day’s” work could mean something altogether different than it had. All sorts of piggy-backing technologies developed thanks to the wheel, from carts to toys to grinding grain and generating power and industrial processes, the concept of the wheel altered the way we live in ways that can keep you thinking all day. Some of the names that come up repeatedly on lists of famous technology pioneers include Da Vinci (flying machines, submarines), Edison (over 1000 patents, including the light bulb), Ford (the assembly line), Pasteur (pasteurization), Alexander Graham Bell (telephone), Guttenberg (printing press), and then there was Nikola Tesla, known perhaps as much for what he imagined as what he actually did (he quite literally predicted something along the lines of the smart phone). There are many, many more names, some of them very early, some just popping up now. And with Jeff Bezos (Blue Origin) having rocketed into space and returned safely this very day (June 20, 2021), and Richard Branson (Virgin Galatic) slated to follow soon, we can safely say that billionaires have officially “launched” a new era of commercial space flight and exploration.

Space Jam: A New Legacy For those of us growing up in the 90’s, there was never a shortage of sports-driven movies. There were classics like THE SANDLOT, ROOKIE OF THE YEAR, and THE MIGHTY DUCKS. There was forgettable fare like ANGELS IN THE OUTFIELD and THE BIG GREEN as well, but even these were pleasant enough for any self-respecting ball player to at least enjoy a little bit. Perhaps the most innovative of all was a film based on an advertisement. It fused live-action and animation together and made parents cringe a whole lot less than they did when they brought their kids to see WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT? SPACE JAM has been beloved by audiences for decades, and now a whole new generation is discovering the delightfully Looney romp thanks to their parents’ unwavering love for nostalgia. Michael Jordan may not have been the best actor in the world, but he was absolutely beloved at the time of the films release, and the comedy remains
endearing enough to remain relevant despite the amount of time that has passed. Plans for a SPACE JAM sequel have swirled for years, but Jordan was never game to jump back into the Looney world. The original film stood on its own, so there was never much of a need to do something more. It’s been 25 years since His Airness took on the Goon Squad, and now there’s a new GOAT in town. Lebron James has taken up the mantle and finds himself standing alongside Bugs Bunny, Lola Bunny, Daffy Duck, and the rest of the original crew in a showdown against a new set of evil opponents. Lebron James stars in latest Space Jam James plays...wait for it... Lebron James. He is the undisputed king of the NBA, and an absolute icon. Warner Brothers wants to make him a megastar across all media platforms, including animated films, in which his likeness would be transformed

into a brand on to itself. This was the brainchild of an AI system called Al G. Rhythm (Don Cheadle) and was supposed to be its crowning achievement. Lebron is not down with the idea, despite the encouragement of his son Dom (Cedric Joe) who cares a lot more about video game programming than he does basketball. The King emphatically shuts down the plan, and tells Dom it’s time to go. An argument between father and son ensues, and they inadvertently get rerouted to an underground computer den. There, they are sucked into a virtual reality-type realm. Al effectively kidnaps Dom, and tells Lebron that the only way he can get him back, is to play a basketball game against a team of his choosing. If James wins, he gets his kid back. If he loses, then he stays in the program forever. Lebron soon crosses paths with Bugs Bunny, and a partnership is forged. While James wants to get superheroes like Superman to help him out, Bugs wants to put the old Looney Tunes crew back together. While I enjoyed seeing Looney characters placed within the confines of MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, it did seem that many of the oft-referenced material (THE MATRIX and GAME OF THRONES) was R-rated entities (or TV-MA for G.O.T.) and not kid-friendly fare. They may have an awareness of the material, but not many of them would fully understand. These jokes may land for a few of the adults in the audience, but would be completely lost on the majority of A NEW LEGACY’s fans. Furthermore, many of the classic characters in the Looney library are largely unknown to today’s youth. When SPACE JAM came out, LOONEY TUNES was still a staple on cable TV, and its roster was totally familiar to its audience. Now, unless their parents have shown them old clips, or they’ve seen the original SPACE JAM, they have no idea who these characters are, or why their tag lines are funny. SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY is largely forgettable, and I don’t see how it’s going to have the same longevity as its predecessor. It has its moments, including a brilliant and hilarious cameo, and for what it was, I thought James made for an adequate leading man. The animation lacked that endearingly cheesy 90’s aesthetic, which may prove to be jarring for those expecting the old school feel. The basketball game itself was based on the video game that Dom created, so it seemed a little absurd, but both of my kids were really into it. And, at the end of the day, that’s what this is all about. A NEW LEGACY, questionable references aside, wasn’t meant for me. It was meant for the RATED: PG 12 and 9-year-olds who were sitting there, RUN TIME: 1h 55min cheering for Lebron and Bugs. The fact that GENRE: Animation, Adventure, they truly believed that the Tune Squad may Comedy not be able to come back from over 900 points STARRING: LeBron James, down (I mean, it’s a pretty legitimate concern) Don Cheadle, Cedric Joe and were cheering for virtually every play, DIRECTOR: Malcolm D. 3 lbs. fresh freestone peaches, peeled and sliced 1 cup white sugar, divided 1 tiny pinch salt ¼ cup all-purpose flour 1 tbsp. cornstarch Directions
1 tsp. lemon juice 1 pinch cayenne pepper 1 pinch ground cinnamon 1 pastry for a 10-inch double crust 1 ½ tbsp. butter, cut into pieces 1 tbsp. heavy whipping cream 1 tbsp. white sugar, or to taste
Step 1 • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Step 2 • Stir peaches, 1/2 cup sugar, and salt together in a bowl. Let sit for 20 to 30 minutes. Strain accumulated juices into a saucepan and return strained peaches to bowl. Bring juices in saucepan to a boil; reduce heat to medium-high, and cook until mixture thickens to a syrup, 5 to 10 minutes. Step 3 • Whisk 1/2 cup sugar, flour, and cornstarch together in a bowl. Stir lemon juice, cayenne pepper, and cinnamon into peaches; add flour mixture and toss to coat. Pour peach syrup over peach mixture and stir. Step 4 • Roll out half the pastry to fit a 10-inch pie plate. Place bottom crust in pie plate. Pour peach filling into pie shell, and dot with butter. Roll remaining crust into an 11-inch circle and cut into 1-inch strips. Step 5 • Lay 5 strips of pie crust over the top of the pie. Weave remaining pastry dough strips through to form a lattice top. Fold the ends of the lattice strips under the bottom crust. Brush cream over the top and sprinkle with 1 tbsp. sugar. Step 6 • Bake until browned and bubbling, about 1 hr 15 min. Cool before serving. Q and A With Author Rocco Constantino I recently sat down with Rocco Constantino, author of Beyond Baseball’s Color Barrier: The story of African Americans in Major League Baseball, Past, Present, and Future. We go in-depth about the book and its message and more. ML: What’s the main message you want to get across in the book? RC: There’s almost two messages within the book, preintegration and post-integration. I’d say the main message of the first half of the book was that there were so many more layers to the segregation and integration of the sport. It wasn’t like the color line was drawn one day and then 50 years later, Jackie Robinson showed up and broke it. I wanted to shine the light on those who played a role in eroding the color line over time, as well as Branch Rickey, Jackie Robinson and Larry Doby, of course. The second half of the book celebrates what African American ballplayers brought to the sport. They gave it life and flair, and not

just Hall of Famers like Willie Mays, Ken Griffey Jr. and Bob Gibson. They obviously play a big role in the book, but it’s also guys like Vida Blue, Bo Jackson, Oscar Gamble and Dick Allen. You can’t tell the story of baseball without those guys. African American players have brought so much to the sport since integration and I want to get that message across. ML: Most underrated Negro League player of all-time? RC: There are a lot, but I’m going to go with Sol White. It’s tough to be underrated as a Hall of Famer, but I don’t Sol White think the casual fan realizes just how instrumental he was as a figure in the Negro Leagues. Here’s a guy who was a great player, manager and executive. He was also a writer and historian who wrote the first history of Black Baseball in 1907. He was one of the early figures in organizing the Negro Legaues too. He accomplished all of those things in the face of the segregation and racism of the early 20th century. When you talk Negro Leagues, you always hear Satchel Paige, Cool Papa Bell, Buck O’Neill and Buck Leonard, which is great. But Sol White laid the groundwork for those guys. Martin Dihigo ML: How involved was the Negro League Museum in this book? RC: I flew to Kansas City to interview the president, Bob Kendrick, and I can say that was the pivotal moment in writing the book. I went out there seeking accurate information and what I got was so far beyond just facts and figures. I got personal stories from Mr. Kendrick, perspective on everyone from Mule Suttles to Kenesaw Mountain Landis and everything in between. I was able to really flesh out some chapters because of Mr. Kendrick’s Branch Rickey input and some entire sections of the book came about just because of Mr. Kendrick’s input. ML: Get into your BallNine content a little also. Writing a lot for that platform, how it started and of course it all helps now that you’re an author of two books! RC: That’s been a wildly fun endeavor. My role is that I interview former players for a weekly column we call Spitballin.’ It’s just fun to catch up with former players to allow them an avenue to share their stories. I have interviewed guys who played from the 1940s on through to today. It’s absolutely amazing to be able to interview some Jackie Robinson of the older guys. I have talked to guys who were teammates with Ted Williams, people who came up through the minors with Hank Aaron, people who pitched to Jackie Robinson and batted against Bob Feller. Guys who shook Honus Wagner’s hand. One gentleman told me his favorite player growing up was Lou Gehrig! Those kinds of things are amazing to me. It’s very gratifying to know that at BallNine, we’re doing our best to stand up for the game’s traditions and helping to record history through first-hand accounts of the players themselves. ML: What Negro League player would you go back in Willie Mays time and watch if you could? RC: That’s a tough one! How can you choose between wanting to see Satchel pitch in his prime, seeing just how fast Cool Papa Bell was in person or just how far Josh Gibson could hit a baseball? I’ll be a little different and choose Martin Dihigo, who was a Cuban-born Negro Leaguer. He could play every position well and was a great pitcher too. He did what Shohei Ohtani is doing now, except he was even the manager at times too! There are so many exciting players to read about, but I’ll choose him. ML: Rock. Congrats and thank you.
