The Ultimate Checklist If you’re anything like me, you can’t seem to get through life without lists. I have lists for everything – work tasks, household tasks, people I need to contact, the shopping, and other random lists on my smart phone or sticky notes on my laptop. I regularly find old lists from months ago in coat pockets or wet ones in my jeans pocket as I remove them from the washing machine. People tell me I’m quite an organised person, and they may be right but I wonder how organised I’d be if it wasn’t for my wonderful collection of lists. Maybe you’re not into lists at all but I find that lists are important for planning and structuring my time and ensuring I don’t forget important stuff about people I know, places I need to go and pointers which keep my life coherent. Maybe I’m just a control freak and can’t help it but I guess some of us need to be organised! If you’re considering going on a short-term programme anywhere, you’ll be making some lists of your own – where to go, what to do, who to go with, and so on. The information you’ll find as you flick through these pages will help you think things through and narrow down your options. More importantly, you may have a list of questions such as, ‘How do I know I’m called to do this?’, or ‘Can God use me?’ or, ‘What am I really passionate about?’ The main feature, ‘Things to know before you go’ will help you think through these and other frequently asked questions and help you strike some important items off your list as you make plans. So what might the ultimate checklist look like – ‘calling?’, ‘gifting?’, ‘passion?’, ‘opportunity?’. Are you called? Every disciple of Jesus, without exception, is called to engage in God’s great mission in the world. ‘Go into all the world and make disciples’ (Matthew 28:19) is not an option – it is a command and a privilege. How amazing it is that God chooses to call and use us as his co-workers. Tick. Are you gifted? Every disciple of Jesus is gifted and equipped for whatever part they will play in fulfilling this. ‘God has given different gifts for doing certain things well’ is what Paul writes to the Romans (12:6). We are all special and unique and I agree with Os Guinness when he says, ‘God normally calls us in line with our giftedness’ so there will be something you-shaped for you to do. Tick. What’s your passion? Every disciple of Jesus has a heart that beats uniquely with different desires and passions and we instinctively care about some things more than others. What gets you going? What excites you? God is likely to use you to do something you’re naturally gifted for or have a passion for. So, don’t ignore your natural interests - God will want to use them. Tick. Opportunity? If you don’t find it here, you won’t find it anywhere! Take time to browse through the different sections and be inspired by the testimonies of those who have served on short-term programmes in various parts of the world. Get ready to tick that off your ultimate checklist and get serving!

Things To Know Before You Go

Top Ten FAQs About Short-Term Mission Jo Jowett highlights some of the questions you may be asking as you think about selecting and serving on a short term project.

an 1. How c re I be suo d that Gme wants to go? Most people don’t get a bolt of lightening from the sky, a booming voice from heaven, a vision of themselves leading thousands to Christ, or see their name flashing in some kind of divine neon light. And if you’re waiting for a ‘burning bush’ experience, like Moses had in Exodus 3, that will probably never happen. Maybe it will just start with a gut feeling – an ‘inner witness’ in your spirit. Maybe something someone has said in a sermon or just a conversation is what’s motivating you. The very fact that you’re reading this may mean that you’ve already decided that you need to offer yourself for some kind of service (whether you’ve admitted it to yourself or not!). Could it be that God has spoken to you from his Word about your commitment to him? Or might it be that the knowledge you have of the needs that exist in the world around you has been enough to move you to action? If you’re waiting for ‘the call’ you could be waiting a long time! Tony Campolo says this: ‘Move ahead. Do something. You can’t steer a car that’s standing still. God cannot guide a person who is not moving. If you see an opportunity – seize it!’ You know the phrase ‘carpe diem’ which means ‘seize the day’. God will put opportunities before you even when you’re not looking for them. Just get serving and the next step will become clear. We are commanded to be Christ’s witnesses (Acts 1:8). We don’t need any clearer guidance than that!

2. There are so many options to choose from. How can I find the one that’s right for me? It’s fair to say that at a first glance through this directory, the choice is a bit mindblowing. There are so many great options to choose from, and this is representative of the diversity of need that’s out there! Short-term mission trips can involve anything from construction to community health, English teaching to evangelistic missions, sports ministry to surgery! Start with something you know you can do. You’re more likely to be effective doing something you have some experience in or that you enjoy doing. Are you already serving in your local church? When you apply to a mission agency, they will undoubtedly ask what involvement you’ve had locally. This is important, because it’s difficult to see why you should be wanting to serve God and share your faith somewhere overseas or elsewhere in the UK if you haven’t first been doing it locally. Think clearly about how much time you have available and where you want to go. You’ll find anything from two weeks to two years here, in locations ranging from Manchester to Mauritius! If it’s just a great location you’re looking for, you might be best to try your local travel agency rather than your local mission agency! In making your selection, it might be useful to pick out three or four that appeal to you. Send an email, make a phone call, browse the agency websites, ask lots of questions. Doing this will help you get a feel for what will be right for you and you’ll soon begin to

3. What sho uld I be looking for in a mission agency? narrow down the options. Because of a lack of thorough investigation into the options, some people have a bad first experience, so make sure you do your homework. Do you share their vision? Are they established in their ministry? Do they have a good track record? Can you be sure you’ll be looked after while you are serving with this agency? Take a look at their mission statement. Maybe they have a particular theological bias which you may struggle with. Taking time to get answers to these important questions can save potential problems further along in the process. Look at the article on the ‘Code of Best Practice in Short-term Mission’. Many agencies have adopted this code and it has influenced their practices on a number of levels. This will help you ask the right questions of mission agencies and give you the assurances you need in choosing the right one. Look out for the CBP logo as you read through the ‘Who to go with’ section.

Things To Know Before You Go Top Ten FAQs About Short-Term Mission

4. Is it better to go on a trip organize d by my church or one run by a mission agency? If your local church already has links with a particular mission project, then the church will undoubtedly benefit from strengthening those links through the visit of a team or individuals. This could also become a reciprocal thing, where church exchanges take place. Having said this, mission agencies have expertise that is often not readily accessible in a local church situation. Those who have earned a reputation for running short-term programmes successfully will inevitably give you an added sense of security in choosing to serve with them. There are a number of agencies who are willing to take a group from one church to a particular situation, so it may be worth seeking a partnership. This may enable your church to fulfill its own aims whilst having access to good advice and expertise. Whatever you do, make sure that your church leadership is involved in your own decision making process.

8

5. W hat can I realistically achieve on a short-term trip ?

If you’re having visions of standing before thousands of people to preach the gospel and leading hundreds to a first time commitment, then your expectations may be a tad unrealistic. This may happen, but it’s not the norm. UK-based projects may lend themselves to direct evangelism more readily, and if God uses you to lead someone to Christ, then we can only praise him for the privilege. Cross-culturally, it’s less straightforward. Steve Collins, writing for‘shorttermmissions.com’ comments, ‘Be realistic about the depth of evangelism you will be able to do in the particular cross-cultural setting you are involved in. Many people expect that their cross-cultural efforts during a 2-week period will result in conversions for Christ. Realistically, a group of high school students working cross-culturally without foreign language skills probably will not see many people accept Christ personally. This should not diminish the impact their participation will have in a process that brings those individuals to receive Christ as Lord.’

y ta i s o! ld i g ou sh uld o sh

I think the key words here are ‘be realistic’, but not to the exclusion of ‘be expectant’. God may well have something unexpected up his sleeve, and we should never exclude the possibility of the miraculous! Many short-term programmes offer practical help to particular projects and it’s important to check that these are set in the context of the longer term goals of the sending agency and the receiving hosts. Short-term mission has been accused of being nothing more than Christian tourism – and in some cases this is entirely justified - so I would suggest that you avoid those that give this impression.

or

6. I don't really feel I have anything to offer but I still want to do something and go somewhere...' Short-termers often comment that they gain more from their experiences than they’ve been able to give. Many people who go on short-term projects do so without a particular skill but they just want to offer themselves to do something to make a useful contribution somewhere. Depending on the nature of the project, some agencies will offer some training, either before the project or on-thejob. Steve Collins notes, ‘Don’t feel like you have to be a gifted carpenter to work on a construction project. You will be amazed at what novices can do when you add the right amount of on-site coaching and the motivation to serve the Lord. Most mission agencies are happy to have anyone who has a servant heart. Sometimes, just your presence on the project brings the intangibles such as encouragement and support to the folks you work with.’ On the other hand, you may have a particular skill that will enable you to contribute something to a project. If this is the case, then find a project that will allow you to use that skill. The more you feel that you made a significant contribution, the more you will be motivated to participate on another project in the future or even consider long term mission! Regardless of how skilled or gifted you think you are, God has invested gifts in every single person he has made and he has every intention of using them. It’s just a matter of finding the right opportunity.

Things To Know Before You Go Top Ten FAQs About Short-Term Mission

7. What if my family don’t really what me to do this? First, you need to establish what is behind their objections. It is perfectly natural, for example, for a parent to be concerned about their offspring taking off somewhere for a year. If your family doesn’t share your faith or your level of commitment then you need to be sensitive in how you handle the situation. If this is the case then they may never agree with any Christian activity you engage in. If their concern is for your protection and safety, then do what you can to address their concerns. Get the agency you’ll be serving with to talk to them and give them every possible reassurance. Involve your church leader if necessary. Talking to other parents who have had similar concerns may also help them. If at the end of this they still object, then you need to ask yourself questions about what’s most important. If God clearly has placed his call on your life for Christian service then you may need to just go for it. Maybe they’ll come round to the idea in time. However, it would be contradictory to scripture to disrespect our families and you should do what you can to protect your relationship with them. Seek advice from people you respect – they may help you find a way through the difficulty. It’s also worth saying that the world is a much smaller place now and the prospect of travelling thousands of miles to serve on an overseas project isn’t as scary as it used to be.

A good place to start is to talk to people about your plans. If you don’t talk about it then others may miss out on the opportunity to bless you. Think creatively about sponsored events. It’s a great way to get your mates involved. Wherever possible, your church should be involved in your plans and there may be funds available to help you. And don’t forget to pray. Amazingly, this is often the last thing people do. In my experience of sending and supporting teams and individuals going on short-term programmes, I have been amazed to see how the funds come in for them. God stuns me every time! Largely, it’s because they’ve prayed and had others praying with them. We have a great provider and should never underestimate his generosity.

8. How do I go about trying to raising funds?

10

9. How w ill this trip fit into the res t of my life? I’d be lying to you if I said that involvement in mission didn’t have the potential to be life-changing. Many people go on these trips expecting to make an impact and are surprised to discover that they have been impacted personally to a much larger extent. So, be prepared to be changed. It may be that God will use your experience to lead you in a new direction, but it may be just as possible that it will confirm to you that you’re exactly where God wants you to be for now. Most agencies run debriefing programmes which are set up to help you process the experiences you’ve had and to offer practical advice on making the most of it once you’ve come home. I have observed that many people who have been impacted by a short-term mission experience become mission mobilisers in their churches or CUs. Likewise, many of those who become enthusiastic communicators move on a stage further to become a team leader for projects with the agency with whom they had their first experience. Others will seek further training to prepare for longer term service. Who knows where it all might lead? At the very least, be open to what God wants to teach you. There’s no better place than to be in the centre of God’s will for your life so don’t be afraid of the impact serving on a short-term programme may have on you. It was certainly life-changing for me!

a s i o r d e P messed up kid Pedro is a messed up kid. He is 16, but isn’t allowed back at school and is struggling to find a job, because he is unskilled and underage. Due to his sketchy past — gang membership, school issues, tattoos, drink, smoking and occasional drug habits — his family members have turned their backs on him. He lives alone, and may not visit his grandparents or sister. This was the Pedro I first met in November 2011 in Loja, Ecuador during my gap year with SIM. He came to El Sendero café every day to help us out during lunch time, so that he had something to eat. Every day he would arrive ready to wash up, dry up, or serve food; whatever we asked him to do, he did. And almost every day after the lunch rush was over, he and the El Sendero administrator would sit down and read the Bible together. Although Pedro had grown up going to church, he had turned his back on everything he’d learned. But David patiently went back through it with him, answering, or trying as best he could, to answer all Pedro’s questions. While outwardly Pedro seemed to be fairly cheery and stable, once you started talking to him one-to-one you realised he was hurting. He was deeply sorry for what he’d done, but unsure of how to make amends. For several months we didn’t see Pedro — he’d finally found a job. I prayed and prayed for him over those months, and in April he resurfaced. Again, he was sad, almost worse than the last time I’d seen him. I sat down with him to ask him about it. He’d had an accident at work the day before and had a very swollen arm. He was living alone again, and he’d broken up with his

girlfriend. In general, he was feeling fed up with life. We read the Bible together, and he saw again how God will never leave us nor forsake us, and will always forgive us when we ask him to. When Pedro left, I prayed that God would be working in his heart, and that he I p would come back that rayed wo soon to El Sendero. G

o u wor ld be d his king in hear t

Three days later he came back, this time with a huge smile on his face. He gave me a massive hug and announced that he was moving back in with his mum that day. He had spoken to her and she had forgiven him. He was excited to be back with his little sister, and to be allowed to visit his grandparents again. I was so happy to hear the news, and to see Pedro looking so much happier again. I am still praying for him. I pray that God will continue to work in him, and that Pedro will continue to change and make good decisions. I also pray that he will come to know, love and serve the Lord Jesus.

It’s wonderful to have a sense that what I am doing can make a difference.

Chloe says, ‘There have been two memorable highlights for me. Firstly, working as a team - living and working so effectively together. We have a lot of fun and can share meaningfully with one another. The other highlight has been seeing how much the kids engage with the worship and seeing them captivated by the meetings. It’s wonderful to have a sense that what I am doing can make a difference. It’s a blessing to see that the children are so spiritually responsive and the greatest blessing of all was seeing a camper become a Christian.’ Remembering the benefits of this time at Oakes, she continues, ‘I have also learned lots of new skills. I now have a food hygiene qualification, a life saving award and a first aid certificate. They are all going to be useful for the future. I help run the activities with the children and on some days do maintenance around the grounds. As a team, we have study days with outside speakers or time off together. ‘I am going to take away with me the learning I have gained in working together as a team, learning how to approach things differently and a real calling to work in a Christian context with children in the future. I have also learned to trust God as He has provided financially for me in amazing ways during my time here. God really answers prayer!”

I will never forget our last working day in Arequipa. The whole church community and many other local people came down to help out. We had an incredible day of camaraderie while we finished the roof of the church building our team had been working on. We ate together as friends - male and female, young and old. For me, that was the stand-out moment of those four months in Peru. We felt part of something really special and could see how much it meant to the people of that neighbourhood. ‘Step’ was a crazy adventure of faith and friendship. As we worked to help two amazing local churches pursue their visions, God truly showed himself to us in many different ways. Our team of ten learnt a huge amount from each other and from the Peruvians. We learnt to appreciate and celebrate people and their differences in a completely new way. Personally, as one of the team leaders, I had to learn how to trust God with everything, especially at my most vulnerable times - through that experience my faith has grown and I was able to do more than I ever thought I could out there. I have made lifelong friends both on my team and back in Peru. An honestly humbling experience.

A dance in the Park This summer Amy and Christina were delighted to lead DanceLink's More Than Gold Olympic outreach. Their team of 12 came from five countries and spanned the ages of 18 to 53. Dance experience of the team members ranged from almost none to 50 years and professional and university-level training. They explain the excitement at being caught up in what God did during London 2012…

‘One of our passions is to encourage people to use dance as a form of worship. It's such a powerful format but often one of the hardest to use. Stigma may be connected to using dance in church and whether it's right for Christians to dance at all. It's also difficult because it leaves the dancer incredibly vulnerable. When you dance in response to what God is doing in your heart, everything

us as a whole and brought unity, humility and passion. ‘What followed,’ she continues, ‘was the most amazing outreach I’ve seen. We had a powerful day of praying through the city of London that ended at the Olympic Park and saw over 100 salvations in one week alone at an inter-church sponsored 'Lark in the Park' festival in Southeast London. Requests came for us to dance in different God moved ministry tents throughout the park, in us as a and we had whole and brought unity, opportunities to teach and dance and learn humility and and grow. passion.

Relates Amy, ‘This team should never have worked, but it did. From the moment we met on the first night of our nearly threeweek outreach, God moved in

‘I rejoice at the salvations that took place!’ finishes Amy. ‘That was why we came. But for me the most powerful story from this outreach was our team: a snapshot of the bride of Christ preparing for the bridegroom's arrival. How beautiful is the body of Christ!’

An Unexpected Miracle Recently a 20 year old girl, Rabeya, came to the hospital as she had been incontinent and unable to use her legs for one year. This was caused by a scoliosis (curve) in her spine since birth, which had worsened with time. Due to her incontinence, Rabeya was continually wet and spent most of her day in bed. To use her bowels, she crawled on her hands and knees outside her house and supported herself by pulling up on a tree. Our physiotherapy team catheterised and assessed Rabeya, and realised that she had a small amount of function in her legs. We gave her a walking frame so she could stand up, and she was delighted with this. I was looking forward to showing her the potential of her independence with a wheelchair. However, when she came to me she was really upset — she had been wet

all day because the catheterisation hadn’t worked effectively and so she didn’t even want to try the wheelchair. I went home feeling really miserable as it seemed like such a hopeless situation. Her problem should never have occurred in the first place and she was treated with so little value by her ...she was family. We had a with treated prayer meeting after value little so work and we by her family. prayed for Rabeya. The next morning I came in and discovered that she had been dry all night, and had gone to the toilet that morning using a wheelchair! I was astounded and when I asked how long she had been dry, she said since the previous afternoon: around the time we prayed for her. I wasn’t expecting that kind of miracle when I prayed, but was so grateful to God for it! She was like a different person – bright and happy and wanting to use the wheelchair. It was amazing.

Life Lessons...

...from a Scripture Union Scotland placement ‘It has been very rewarding working with the children and teenagers, seeing them grow and develop through new experiences, being encouraged by their peers and having a lot of fun. There was a great variety in my placement and I was never bored. Part of my placement was at one of SU’s activity centres and part of it was spent working with various youth initiatives in Glasgow. ‘Was it challenging? I have been pushed this year and sometimes it’s been difficult, with starting new groups, juggling commitments, planning sessions and coming up with ideas but I can honestly say that working with young people is the most rewarding thing that I have done.’

More About Christian Vocations Christian Vocations is a ministry of Global Connections whose vision is to see ‘mission at the heart of the church and church at the heart of mission.’ CV's activities and services within Global Connections are focused on resourcing and challenging Christians to discover and practise their God-given vocation in life and service.

How do we achieve this? By providing details on thousands of opportunities to serve in the UK or around the world. By providing services and support that will enable individuals to reflect on their personal gifting and calling, encouraging everyone to use their gifts in serving God. By providing resources that motivate people and inform them about various topics, answering many of the frequently asked questions we receive. By partnering agencies, events and churches to help challenge and channel people into suitable service opportunities.

In addition to the staff team of Global Connections, there is a network of voluntary advisors who work with us from all over the UK, from GC member agencies and churches, and others who share the common desire to see God's people fulfilling their calling in life and service. The ministry of Global Connections is funded partly by members’ contributions, some income generation through services provided by CV, as well as a significant level of donor contributions. This is a crucial element of the financial basis of the charity's work. If you would like to support our ministry, either in prayer or through finance, we would be very grateful.
