Reduce, Reuse, Recycle In 2007, the government released figures which showed that Britain was officially the ‘dustbin of Europe’. A few years on and households, commerce and industry are generating in excess of 100 million tonnes of waste, most of which is sent to landfill. That’s more than any other country in the European Union. The government’s Landfill Directive states targets for reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill sites in the UK with the target for 2010 being that waste sent to landfills should be 75% of that sent in 1995. The nationwide cry is, ‘Reduce, reuse, recycle!’

Many of the stories told in this edition of Mission Matters tell of people who were on the scrap-heap of life – people like Paulo. He lived in a hovel in a São Paulo shanty town and spent much of his time drinking and gambling. Some churchplanting missionaries introduced him to Jesus and his life was transformed. It didn’t stop there because Paulo’s influence began to change the environment around him as one by one his family trusted in Jesus too. Somchai’s story recounts how she was almost destroyed by an evil spirit but was released through the prayer and set free to be a new creature in Christ.

Recycling is a wonderfully creative process. I find it hard to believe that a fleece worn by my husband once took the form of 16 plastic bottles. It’s amazing that something that was thrown into the rubbish bin can be transformed into something completely different that can be used again and again. Even a piece of scrap paper can be made into something beautiful if put into the right hands.

Take time to read some of these encouraging stories of how lives aren’t just being recycled – they’re being transformed and becoming agents of transformation in many of the world’s hard but exciting mission fields. This edition also includes information on a wide range of agencies offering all kinds of opportunities for those willing to be used as agents of transformation.

The truth of scripture states that God is the business of recycling. There is no person on this earth that is beyond use. God’s process of reusing and recycling means that he can take people like you and me - sinful, unworthy, unfruitful people and transform us by his Spirit into people who can be used again and again to transform the environments he has placed us in. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, ‘Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!’*

Maybe God has a new use for you! Paul wrote to the Ephesians, ‘For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.’* (Ephesians 2:10). The same is true for you and me as we live and serve in a world in need of transformation.

Getting together for growth For almost 20 years now, Christian Vocations has been providing information about mission opportunities in publications just like this. Mission Matters has helped hundreds of people find opportunities to serve God all over the world but the publication is set to get even better. Christian Vocations has become part of Global Connections and the newly merged organisation will continue to bring you the same up-todate information about worldwide mission opportunities. Global Connections is a growing, vibrant network of UK churches and agencies, linked together for resources and learning in order to serve, resource and develop churches in their mission. Christian Vocations also serves many of these agencies and churches. Our coming together presents a wonderful opportunity for the growth and development of our services to the Christian public. Together we will symbolise the UK’s only network working to mobilise the UK church for world mission. Our combined vision is to see ‘mission at the heart of the church, the church at the heart of mission’. As well as seeking to mobilise individuals and churches to connect with what God is doing globally, the network seeks to equip all its member organisations to fulfil their mission through the following:

1. NETWORKING members together through special interest groups and events 2. ADVISING on vocational matters for individuals 3. SUPPORTING members through advice, guidelines, services and information 4. RESOURCING churches and individuals to be more involved in global mission 5. EXPLORING key mission issues and trends 6. COMMUNICATING effectively about world mission

y ll a n io t n e t in n a What is missional church? As Christians who want to serve God among the nations of the world, we look to the many mission agencies which can offer the opportunities to serve and the processes and structures that will enable us to get there. Mission agencies like those included in this publication still play a vital part in facilitating mission all over the world and God is doing amazing things through them. But how can they partner with churches in the sending of workers into the harvest field and encourage them in their mission? Bryan Knell, Consultant with the Global Connections network, reflects on what we understand by 'intentionally missional church'

Most evangelical churches in the UK do mission. They believe that doing mission is part of their evangelical responsibility as gospel people. They send money for mission, mission personnel are mentioned in their prayers and they sometimes arrange an event to hear about what is happening in another part of the UK or the wider world.

It is a pastoral model of church. A church leader's key task should be 'to prepare God's people for works of service' (Eph 4:12) but we call many of them 'pastors' and that indicates the way we think about church. Pastoral care is important, but it should be a management role in the church. Leadership should be missional.

But doing mission is not the same as being missional. Churches that do mission may well make a significant contribution to building the Kingdom of God, but the underlying ethos of most well established UK churches is not missional and certainly not intentionally missional.

The Church is not being allowed to be missional

There are certainly spiritual and discipleship issues that are behind this problem. If Christian individuals and churches were to grasp and live out the mission of God as it is proclaimed through the whole of the biblical record, we would have no problem. But there are at least two historical and structural issues that result in churches doing mission rather than being missional. Firstly, the Church lost its missional way and secondly, the UK church, more recently, has not been allowed to be missional.

The Church lost its way missionally From the beginning of Christendom, services have been the primary evidence and event of the church. We have buildings for services (many of our church buildings are suitable for services and nothing else), furniture for services, officiators for services, clothes for services, music for services, utensils for services, special words (liturgies) for services, biddings and benedictions for services. In most UK churches today, the majority of effort, practice, rehearsal and leader's time goes into preparing the Sunday morning 'service'. And that 'service' is primarily for those that belong. We are making the 'in crowd' feel important, comfortable and accepted. Our experience each week shows us that the church is about the bums of the faithful on seats!

6

christianvocations

For the last hundred years the UK church has not been encouraged to be missional because other organisations have been set up with the express purpose of doing mission. Mission agencies, evangelistic organisations, mission halls and various outreach groups have been focused on preaching the gospel and sharing the good news in a great variety of creative ways. Some have specialised in a particular approach and become experts in their ministry. Many have been very effective and many Christians look back to a 'para-church' group and are thankful for all they learnt through its ministry. But simply because they have existed, the church has continued to be sidelined in its missional role. How does a church now begin to get involved in a particular ministry when an organisation has many years’ experience and is well known for expertise? For most of the last 200 years, churches have been expected to 'do mission' through the 'pay and pray' approach. Organisations have done mission on behalf of and in the name of the church, with the church's financial and prayerful support. It will take time and a lot of persuasion to change the perception.

Mission - the 'organising function' of churches As Mike Frost explained so clearly during his visit to the UK in 2008, worship has been the 'organising function' of churches under Christendom. An intentionally missional church will have mission as the 'organising function'.

Many new and young churches are establishing themselves with mission as their organising function, but there are two major problems we still face. Firstly, changing the culture of a church from being pastorally centred to being missionally centred is almost impossible. Very few established churches have managed to make the change. Secondly, churches that have been recently founded as missional churches have very often rejected the valuable experience that para-church groups can offer. They often assume that if they have any contact with an organisation, it will take over and dominate them. There will always be an important and valuable role for specialist agencies in supporting, advising and serving the churches in mission.

The characteristics of an intentionally missional church 1. Vision

– the dominant and priority vision of a missional church is to see the Kingdom of God expanded by gospel proclamation and social action. Mission is not limited by geography or method. How healthy a church is, how much it has achieved in the past year, its aim for the coming year and its 5/10 year goal will all be determined by mission.

2. Decisions - all decisions at every level will be made of the basis of mission opportunities and prospects. "If it does not involve mission, we will not do it." 3. Equipping/Empowering

– the church will make it a priority to train, equip and mentor its members in mission. This will involve helping Christians identify where they can naturally do mission and giving them confidence to make the most of these opportunities. Secondly, it will also involve identifying new circumstances where they can be involved in mission together and thirdly, decide which mission projects will be supported by the church.

4. Preaching/Teaching/Learning – the Bible will be taught through a mission hermeneutic. This means that it will be assumed that mission is the over-riding message, focus, fabric and structure of the whole Bible – Genesis to Revelation; that all the issues that the Bible covers have to be understood in terms of their affect on and contribution to mission. The Bible will be taught not just as valuable spiritual wisdom but to equip Christians to respond to the questions and issues that they face as they do mission. 5. Worship – worship will be inspired by missional concepts. a) Firstly, the glory of God which is enhanced when people come to acknowledge him as Lord through mission. b) Secondly, the prospect of worship in heaven when people from every tribe, language, people and nation will gather round the throne. (Rev 7) c) Thirdly, worship will be enhanced and invigorated by the testimony of those coming to faith and being blessed by God through mission as it is in heaven. (Luke 15:7) 6. Community – Fellowship will be vital because of the challenges, pressures and attacks that Christians are facing as they reach out in mission. People are drawn together when they unitedly attempt a task or face a challenge.

Mission is happening Right now, God’s love is criss-crossing the globe, transcending cultural barriers, reaching into people’s lives and transforming communities. Mission is moving in all directions, connecting people from East, South, North and West. For over 200 years, CMS has been playing a part in God’s mission. Because we’re involved in so many www.cms-uk.org different mission contexts, it can be difficult to sum up what we do. We think “sharing Jesus, changing lives” just about covers it. As a globally networked community, committed to evangelistic mission, we dream of the day when the whole of creation is restored to a living, loving relationship with God. We see glimpses of this everywhere. There are many stories of “sharing Jesus, changing lives” we could tell. Here are just a few…

Thousands turn to her for healing Sometimes called the “Mother Teresa of South America”, nurse Beryl Baker, an associate mission partner in Paraguay, shares the love of Jesus by offering the only prospect of medical treatment to around 18,000 native people in the Chaco area. She has dedicated over 30 years of her life to this area and describes herself as an “orderly, gynaecologist, midwife and dentist”, treating anything from TB to gunshot wounds and snakebites. The government provides some medicines but offers little else in the way of support. Beryl has also trained local health promoters to meet basic community health needs. 8

Mizoram: Exporting the Gospel The state of Mizoram is culturally and economically isolated from the rest of India but their marginalised status hasn’t kept them from excelling in mission. It has been estimated that one in every 500 Mizos is a missionary. Yet they want to do more. CMS is helping the Presbyterian Church of Mizoram add to these numbers. In January, five new Mizo co-mission partners were posted. One is working in Bangalore with an innovative youth ministry; two are working as nurses in Himachal Pradesh – a state with one of the smallest Christian populations in India. The other two are teaching in India, one in a church school and one in a mostly Muslim school. The partnership with the church in Mizoram is a prime example of CMS’s commitment to supporting indigenous international missionaries, particularly in Empo werin g grass roots missi on places that are resource rich but cash poor.

The music is pumping, the dance floor is packed, and the alcohol is flowing. It’s midnight at Pussycats Night Club in Telford and people are ready to party. Some will have a fun night out; others may find themselves in need of some assistance, which is why Sanktuary was set up down the street by Wellington Methodist Church and Safespace, a Christian community pioneered by CMS mission partner Mark Berry. Open Saturday nights from 11:30 pm to 3 am, Sanktuary offers a haven where people can sober up, order a taxi and find a listening ear. Since last December, Sanktuary has welcomed a steady stream of late night clubbers, who say Sanktuary “feels so safe.” “As soon as you walk in you feel at home,” one person said, adding, “The people are so nice; it’s amazing they just want to help.” By being available in the wee hours, Sanktuary volunteers have connected with people they may not have met otherwise. Visiting Sanktuary, a Radio 4 producer overheard people discussing the nature of evil and the existence of God. (CMS UK-based mission partners are involved in things like interfaith evangelism, creation care and fresh expressions of church.)

Most people don’t know that worldwide there are currently more sufferers of arsenic poisoning than people infected with HIV/AIDS. Millions of people in Bangladesh alone are at risk of arsenic poisoning due to contaminated water supplies. Mission partner James Pender is working with the Church of Bangladesh to dig safe wells and combat the effects of arsenic poisoning.

Sudanese children draw on Jesus for healing

Tra nsform ing com mu nit ies

The war in Sudan may be over, but according to mission partner Ruth Radley, “there’s a long way to go before peace reigns in people’s hearts, especially children.” Ruth has been helping run trauma counselling sessions with children in an orphanage. “One session was about taking our pain to Jesus, and asking him to heal us. The children were asked to draw or write some horrors they had seen. One girl Grace drew a picture of herself with her hands on her head because when rebels came to her home, she was scared and didn’t know what to do. She also drew her father, who was abducted, with his hands on his head. Another girl drew a picture of her house being burnt down.” Then a leader picked up a wooden cross, and the children followed her outside. “We took the papers, laid them at the foot of the cross and burned them. While words and images of pain dissolved in flames, we held hands and sang ‘cast your burdens onto Jesus’. It was an overwhelming sight.” profile on page 39 missionmatters 9

ECM is a movement of missionaries, churches and individuals from around the world who are spreading the good news about Jesus Christ throughout the nations of Europe. Why? Because less than 1% of the European population are evangelical believers. ECM works in 18 countries focusing on establishing new churches, working in partnership with local evangelical churches. We are passionate about helping existing churches to engage in evangelism, teaching and discipleship. We also have community based projects such as working with drug addicts, disabled orphans and refugees.

From Policing to the Poles What is the connection between Polish immigrants and a retired police officer?

That is what Ken Willis wondered when ECM’s British Director, Richard Tiplady, contacted him back in November 2008. Ken learned about plans for the “Pole to Pole Consultation”, held in Coventry in December, inviting church leaders and workers to share ideas as to how Polish people in the UK could be reached by churches.

“I was trying to seek God’s purp ose and was min of something I ha dful d recently heard. ‘God does not need any of us to do his work. He can do it all own. But God ch on his ooses and want s to work throug people, if only w h his e will let him’. Th ose words were quite liberating, as I was wonder ing what to do, recently retired having from my post as a police Chief Superintendent. Ken is now the National Coordinator of Pole To Pole, a network run by ECM, the Evangelical Alliance, Global Connections and the Fellowship of Churches of Christ, which serves to support churches and individuals reaching out to Polish people in the UK. Well into its second year, Ken writes, “Since then I have often reflected on how things are going, are we having any impact, and could I be doing more? I remind myself that the main focus of what we are about is to encourage, support and help resource UK Christians, organisations and churches in sharing the Gospel with Polish Christians and the Polish community here in the UK.”

So what have been the highlights or achievements so far? Marketing and distributing Realna Nadzieja (Real Hope) magazines and the Gospel of John in Polish in the UK. The magazine contains testimonies of Polish people who have come to experience the extraordinary love of Jesus. It also promotes the Realna Nadzieja website, www.realnanadzieja.pl, at which Polish people can make contact with Polish Christians and have their questions answered. Bringing Labyrinth to the UK, so that it is now available as a resource to help churches to reach out to Polish people living in the UK. The Labyrinth reshapes a 12th century ritual for the 21st Century. Labyrinth is made up of eleven rooms using a variety of media to stimulate thought and invites the participant to be interactive and respond to the Gospel message.

Seeing the growing enthusiasm of some in churches trying to reach out to their Polish neighbours, like Riverside Family Church in Southampton, lead by Paul Finn. Their Poslani przez Jezusa or Ambassadors for Jesus conference was a blessing for local Polish people as well as many that travelled from further afield. Supporting the Mission to Migrant Seasonal Workers, run by the three Baptist churches in Herefordshire mentioned above. Ania Tałałaj works among the many thousands of Polish migrant agricultural workers in the area. Gorsley Baptist Church was the first church to use Labyrinth, and they plan to use it again in August 2010.

Future Plans The finishing touches are being made to an English-language Pole to Pole website, www.poletopole.org.uk, which will help churches and individuals to find events and resources available in the UK. ECM wants to encourage and provide opportunities for individuals to learn more of the Polish culture, grow their passion for reaching out to their Polish neighbours, and

meet practical needs in Poland. Our vision is to mobilise a team to join Realna Nadzieja in their Real Action project during August 2010 in Łodz Poland. Modelled on Soul In The City, this will involve working on a range of community projects with local churches and simply showing the love of Jesus. No knowledge of the Polish language will be needed. We want to arrange and encourage others to host events that support and bless Polish Christians and those trying to reach them in the UK. Neil Maddock of Riverside Family Church reported on an event held there last November. He said, “The conference was a great success and there was a lovely atmosphere as friendships were formed, people were challenged and faith was strengthened.” The Labyrinth has great potential to help reach not just Polish people but anyone prepared to explore some of the big questions of life. Through Pole to Pole, we are really keen to promote Labyrinth, which ECM will provide free of charge to any church wanting to use it in outreach to Polish people in the UK.

Albania - A modern miracle I grew up fascinated by the two countries I was forbidden to visit China and Albania. As a journalist, I knew these two intriguing places were unlikely to put out the welcome mat for me, but much to my surprise I did manage to visit them both years later.

In May 1986, I joined the first-ever delegation of regional newspaper editors to China, but it was not until May 2009 that I made it to Albania. I had just been made redundant after 36 years in journalism and European Christian Mission invited me to join a small team going to Albania. I went to Lushnje, an hour and a half’s drive south of the capital Tirana, where I was amazed by the changes to one of Europe’s poorest nations. After being an isolated Communist dictatorship for nearly 50 years this small country, north west of Greece, has undergone an amazing political U-turn and is now a democracy, a member of NATO, and about to join the European Union. However, a spiritual revolution has also occurred since dictator Enver Hoxha declared his country the world’s first atheistic state in 1967. When Albania opened its borders in 1990, Christians poured in and it was like going back to the Book of Acts to see a country grow from no churches to more than 170. But the new church had a baptism of fire – in 1997 a civil war forced Western missionaries to flee the country, a nationwide pyramid-selling scandal brought down the government, mobs set fire to government buildings and many youngsters emigrated, as there were no jobs and no future for them. Yet when 500,000 Kosovan refugees fled to Albania in 1999 because of civil war, the churches stepped in to help, even though they had so little themselves. Later they were praised by the Albanian President, Rexhep Mejdani.

The Church in Lushnje

One such church is the Way of Peace Church in Lushnje, with about 50-60 worshippers. They also run Victory School, an English language school for 500 students, have built two homes for poor people, rebuilt a school, planted a church in Durres, given wheelchairs to the disabled and equipment to the hospital, run sewing classes so women can set up their own businesses, and taught Italian and computer classes to youngsters. When the town could not provide bulbs for streetlights, the church paid for them so their young and elderly worshippers could get home safely. Now they want to buy a plot of land next to the church and school so they can expand with a nursery and kindergarten.

minute a week Christian message beamed in by Trans World Radio from Monte Carlo which he listened to regularly and was eventually converted. If he had been caught listening to the radio, he would have been thrown out of the army in disgrace and at the very least thrown into jail. I decided that this story would make a great book and in October 2010 Lion Publishing are bringing out God’s Secret Listener, firstly in the UK and then in the USA. All those years ago I never thought I would even visit Albania, let alone write a book about this fascinating country.

He never discovered any military messages, but instead stumbled across a 15In order to do this work we need people to join us. Interserve is a mission agency committed to serving people in the hard places of the world. We have been involved in incarnational, wholistic ministry to the peoples of Asia and the Arab World since 1852 and continue to work amongst them today, loving them through what we do and say. Interserve workers use their professional skills to bless people in need in the most challenging countries of the world.

Jesus and the refugees

We first met Ahmed, an Afghan man in his early thirties, about three years ago. He came to church a few times but then we lost touch with him. When his asylum application failed he was put in a detention centre and told he would most likely be sent back to Afghanistan. There he read scripture, worshipped in the chapel and witnessed to the other inmates, which prompted a hostile response. Other Afghan inmates said “If we are sent back to Afghanistan on the same flight, we will kill you before we land.” This was no idle threat: during a riot in their wing, thirty angry Afghans tried to break into his room and kill him. He was told one morning to gather his belongings as he was to be deported immediately. As he boarded the bus he realised he was going with all the other Afghans who had promised to kill him. He spent the short journey in urgent prayer for his life. As they stopped outside the airplane on the tarmac the guard touched his shoulder. “We haven't got enough staff so you have to come back with us.” He was the only person in the whole busload to return that day. He immediately came to church and now we have Bible studies each week. Steven, an Interserve Urban Vision worker in London. 16

Jesus in jail I look around the classroom and see a group of cheerful, interested young men. There are 14 of them, aged between 17 and 21. They are in prison, in a young offenders unit, here in Cambodia and some of them have been here a long time. I am here to teach them English. Why are they here? They have been convicted of a crime and have no family or influential friends to help them and certainly do not have the money for legal representation. At an age when most young men dream of university, careers and girlfriends, they do not see any good future. Their sentences may be extended for no apparent reason and some will spend their lives in prison. Prison in Cambodia is not a nice place to be. The food is inadequate and poor quality. The living conditions are bad. There is much mental and physical ill-health. Soon these men will be too old for the young offenders unit and will be moved into a men's prison with its implied threat of violence and intimidation. In response to this need our team teaches English and Khmer, music and vocational skills. We bring them food to supplement their poor diet. Above all else, we try to show them God’s love and forgiveness. We are signs of kingdom hope to these young men who are locked away from family and friends and excluded from society. Pam, an Interserve worker in Cambodia.

New believers? Priti’s story “I work at a home for women and children affected by HIV and AIDS. The home is an amazing place where miracles happen. “A year ago we said goodbye to a very special girl named Priti. When she came to us she was on the verge of dying but miraculously for 8 months life filled her body and she enjoyed learning to write, to dance, and to laugh. Her voice brought joy to all of us and at Christmas she was the star of our pageant. After Christmas her body began to deteriorate and the last months of her life were spent fighting for survival. One day she had to be rushed into intensive care. For the next two days we came around Priti singing to her, praying with her, and telling her about the amazing house that God had ready for her. Two days later she passed away. Being involved in her life reminded all of us at Purnata Bhavan of our purpose: to give HIV sufferers the opportunity to find life and then to move on to what God has for them, whether it is life in heaven or life here on earth. Priti's smile blessed us all, we miss her; but we are so thankful that she is no longer in pain and is in the best hands she could ever be in.” Bethany, an Interserve worker in India.

One evening I was sitting out in the street chatting to the neighbourhood kids who introduced me to a young man they said was the son of the local Imam. The man visited our home and was keen to take away a copy of the Bible. He came back a week later with a friend of his. Together they were really interested in asking more about our faith. After a series of short visits, I suggested they watch a film about the life of Jesus. At the end of the film he said, “I want Jesus to pay for my sins – I don’t want to pay for them myself.” He acknowledged that this meant a rejection of his previous belief system but he was convinced that Jesus’ way was better. He invited Jesus into his life as Lord and Saviour. His friend wasn’t quite sure at that stage but accepted prayer and agreed to look into the Bible. I was amazed when he came back a week later saying he’d read it cover to cover – and by now he too was convinced that Jesus held the words of eternal life. He also prayed to accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour. What’s more, they are both being open about their new views with their friends and family. One is married and says he has already told his wife who is also reading the Bible. They are also discussing their new ideas with their group of friends and this week one of them brought another friend round so that he too could hear the good news. What’s going to happen next? A Christian mission serving Nepali people through health and development work

Esther Mitchell is a physiotherapist, while her husband Ross is a teacher. Originally they wondered about doing mission work for six months – INF encouraged them to consider serving in Nepal for two years, but now Esther and Ross think two years may not be enough. Here is their story…

We’d been married for 18 months when we started to wonder about serving God abroad. This came as a result of Esther’s feeling that God was asking her to use her physiotherapy skills in a developing country. With no specific country in mind, we decided to write letters to a group of mission organisations which – between them – were working all over the world. Our plan was to go through whichever doors opened up for us. Just days after sending the letters, we were really surprised to get a phone call from Phil Smith in the INF UK office, asking us to send our CVs and discussing the various options available for us in Nepal. We had pre-departure orientation with INF UK and did a short course at Redcliffe Bible College in Gloucester, and so by the time we left for Nepal we knew about the country’s political situation, cultural do’s and don’ts, likely stressors and coping strategies, and even how to eat with our hands!

God’s assurance Preparing to come here was a real team effort. Raising funding was a humbling experience, but made us realise that, in providing the wherewithal for us to be in Nepal, God was assuring us we were going to the right place – funds came in from people we didn’t know or hadn’t seen for years, which was a big encouragement. The potential stresses of coming to a new country, learning language and dealing with life in another culture were greatly reduced by INF’s Orientation Co-ordinator Joyce Odell. She met us at the airport, helped us open bank accounts, accompanied us on our first trips to shops, dealt with our questions for our landlord, took us on our first journeys on public transport, resolved queries about our work roles, and even gave us hugs when we needed them. She taught us how to apologise in Nepali, and smoothed things over when we accidentally locked our landlady out on the flat roof and poured dirty water over the balcony on to her washing! Now that we’ve finished our initial orientation time we are looked after by Roz Brain, INF’s pastoral carer, who e-mails us, sends us cards and visits us from time to time to make sure we’re doing OK. 20

w s i e m Ho h e h t Practice makes perfect

As we committed to working in Nepal for two years, we did an initial five-month period of language learning and orientation for our work roles. Learning a new language as an adult can be a daunting prospect, but although we were apprehensive we have really enjoyed the whole process. Every weekday we spent a few hours in the classroom and, as our abilities progressed, we were able to practice outside the classroom too. Nepali people are really friendly and happy to stop and talk and try and understand, even if you don’t entirely make sense! Esther was greatly helped by a Nepali woman she met every week for language practice. It can still be a struggle to make ourselves fully understood, and some days we can feel confident one moment but frustrated the next. However, we came here with no Nepali language at all and so try to remember that it takes time to learn well.

e r e h w s s i t r a e h e We’ve had to learn to be more flexible. Esther came to Nepal expecting to do a research role but has found herself in a clinical and support role instead. Adapting to a different culture has its challenges – we have discovered how ‘Western’ we are in our thinking, prejudices and expectations. Sometimes it feels like our characters are being really tested, and we have to remember that we’re not perfect and may need to change! We didn’t come to Nepal because God put that country on our hearts above any other in the world. We came here because we wanted to serve. God calls people in different ways, and we believe He called us to Nepal for a purpose. We’ve found that, with time, He has given us a real heart for the Nepali people and a sense of being at home… Two years may not be long enough.

Beauty ashes from

Following up medical patients is difficult in Nepal. There’s often no phone to enable you to get in touch with the patient, and sometimes it could mean travelling for days – only to find the patient is not where you expected. During a visit in November to Nepal’s remote, impoverished Jumla District, a field trip took colleagues and myself within an hour’s walk of the village of Raralihe, home of INF client Suraj. We decided to give it a try.

could find them and, after a couple of hours’ walking, we did find them. We found a situation that was even better than we had hoped. We found Suraj clean, well nourished and sitting content in his mother’s arms. Although he will always have a scar, his wound was healing well. We also found a woman empowered by her experience – Dhansari was no longer tearful or confused but spoke with confidence and happiness.

Four months ago Suraj, then five months old, was brought to INF’s Jumla clinic by his mother Dhansari. Sixteen days earlier she had been out working in the fields, while his cradle was near a kitchen fire for warmth. Tragically, the cradle toppled over and tipped Suraj into the flames. Helpless and alone, he suffered a severe, full skinthickness burn on top of his head, through to the bone.

When asked about the experience, Dhansari smiled with pride at her son and herself. She really appreciated the INF clinic, it was clean and she and her son received so much love and care. She says with confidence that she could now help others who might face similar situations.

Dhansari was completely overwhelmed with grief and fear. She had come alone with Suraj to Jumla, after realising that the tincture of iodine that her local health post had provided was not helping. She went to the district hospital in Jumla, where she was told that there was nothing that could be done. However, the hospital staff said maybe Dhansari could try the INF clinic, which has a lot of success in treating complex wounds and ulcers suffered by leprosy patients. Dhansari had never heard of INF but, even though she had little hope for Suraj, she went to the INF clinic.

The only way to help Suraj was seen immediately by INF’s Nepali clinic staff, but his burn was severely infected and they didn’t know how to treat it. The only way to help Suraj survive was to get him to hospital in the capital Kathmandu for specialist treatment. But how could Dhansari ever go to a big city like Kathmandu? She had never been outside her own rural area before, even the trip to Jumla had been a daunting prospect for her. She had little money for transport costs, let alone medical expenses. She was literally paralysed with fear and confusion, both for Suraj and for herself. INF’s clinic staff counselled Dhansari, addressing all her fears. Slowly her tears stopped, and for the first time since the accident she felt some hope for Suraj. INF’s Poor Fund covered the travel costs, and INF arranged for a Kathmandu hospital to cover medical expenses and organised chaperones to ensure that Dhansari and Suraj arrived there safely. After two months at the hospital Suraj was discharged and went home.

A woman empowered Two months on, we wondered how Suraj and Dhansari were getting along. INF’s community facilitator found out where we

Sometimes it’s hard to see how a tragedy like Suraj’s accident can result in any good. However, it’s through INF that the transforming power of love, hope and kindness is being seen in poor, remote communities like Raralihe. Seeing Dhansari and Suraj was like seeing the promise in Isaiah 61 realised – beauty from ashes.

Get Equipped for Mission Anywhere Situated in the heart of the vibrant city of Gloucester, Redcliffe College attracts students from across the UK and around the world to study in its multi-cultural and international community. Some students are preparing for short or long-term mission or are taking time out to reflect and study further after a period of crosscultural work. Others are not quite sure what they will do when they leave, but they find that the Redcliffe approach of academic study, personal development and practical placements helps them to discover more about themselves and their future direction.

So what do some of our current students think about being at Redcliffe? at insight “I’ve gained a gre ission work.” into full-time m “Living and studying in Redcliffe’s multi-cultural environment has been a real joy and privilege,” says Benj from Wales. Before coming to the College, he served for a year as a staff worker at his local church. At the end of that year he says he wanted further training to become “better equipped and more prepared for fulltime Christian service”.

well as a learning experience. “I’ve become more open and understanding to different views and approaches of carrying out mission,” he says. Benj’s cross-cultural experiences haven’t been limited to life within Redcliffe. Weekly placements allow students to get involved in a range of Gloucester churches and other local ministries including working with refugees, disadvantaged teenagers and the homeless. In addition, Benj’s annual six-week placement has so far taken him to Israel and Italy.

Benj is now in his third year of Redcliffe’s BA(Hons) Degree in Applied Theology in Intercultural Contexts. The college community typically has students from nearly thirty different countries each year and Benj says that “The block placements give a great insight into talking to fellow students about their homes full-time mission work,” he explains. “In Israel I and ministries has been an encouragement as 26

served in an organisation working with immigrants, providing help practically and also spiritually. My time in Italy was spent with church planters and evangelists in student work and delivering Bibles and Christian literature to areas that currently have no Christian witness.” “I’m still praying about what I’ll be doing when I graduate, but meeting Christians from different parts of the world and seeing how God is working in these areas has helped give focus for prayer and some ideas for the future.”

Jules studied at Redcliffe for a term in 2003 before working on short-term mission with Latin Link in Ecuador. This year she is back at the College, preparing for longer term mission in Spain with ECM. “As soon as I got out of the car I was greeted with a great big hug by one of the lecturers whose tutor group I’d been in for those seven short weeks, six years ago. I was back among family!” she says. Jules was looking for a college with a crosscultural mission focus, and having the option

to study some European-focussed modules attracted her to Redcliffe. But she is also enjoying the biblical studies and spiritual formation modules. “I am constantly reminded in lectures as well as chatting over meals with people from other cultures just how big God is. The course is teaching me so much about the Bible and life at the time it was written, as well as different worldviews and issues that we need to be aware of when bringing the Gospel message into different contexts.” As well as learning about other cultures, Jules says she has discovered so much more about herself, her personality and who God has made her to be. “There have been times of elation as I catch a glimpse of how God is working in me, and also times of deep soul searching as iron sharpens iron here at College,” she says. “I am learning to put disciplines in place to make my relationship with God my number one priority; before spending time doing, I need to be.”

“We are not alw ays given the answers, but cha llenged to broaden our hori zons” The couple decided to come to Redcliffe for two years, studying the Diploma in Applied Theology in Intercultural Contexts.

Andreas from Switzerland, and his wife Eszter from Hungary, hope to work in Africa with Wycliffe Bible Translators. Friends recommended they study at Redcliffe – so they decided to visit first. ”We had heard many good things about Redcliffe and when we visited we were very impressed by the fellowship among the students, the warm welcome and well prepared programme for our visit. We also really appreciated the fact that practical service and personal development are as much a part of the programme as the more academic side. For example, our block placement this summer is with Wycliffe Bible Translators, allowing us to explore our future ministry with them.”

“We have learnt so many new things!” says Andreas. “We both like the non-dogmatic approach to faith and mission. In every question we are challenged to think about the whole picture and include cultural and personal factors in the process of applying the biblical teaching. We are not always given answers, but challenged to broaden our horizons, and come to terms with what we believe. We have also really enjoyed finding out more about the historical background of the Bible.” Along with the academic work, Eszter and Andreas appreciate being part of the Redcliffe community. “It’s been a great blessing to have made so many friends here and I think we will only realise how special this is when we leave! It is also very precious to us that the lecturers are willing to counsel and pray for us in very personal matters. Without exaggerating, this makes Redcliffe one big family.”

Redcliffe College’s courses include. Short courses – our flexible Pick and Mix course allows you to study from six weeks to a year, choosing courses from the first and second year of the Diploma course. The twelve-weeks Across the Cultures and European Studies short courses provide more focussed study for those preparing for short-term mission. Professionals in Mission – you may already have a degree or be preparing to use your professional skills in mission. This validated one-year course will give you the biblical, personal and practical skills you need to thrive in a cross-cultural ministry around the world or in the UK. Certif icate, Diploma and BA(Hons) in Applied Theology in Intercultural Contexts – combine academic study, personal development and practical placements for one, two or three years. Each year builds on the one before, and includes a six-week block placement anywhere in the world. Postgraduate MAs – choose from Global Issues in Contemporary Mission, Asian Studies in Intercultural Contexts, Global Issues in Intercultural Contexts, European Studies* or Bible and Mission*. You can study full- or parttime during the year, or choose the flexible-learning mode, combining residential summer schools or weekends with distance learning.

Possessed! As a teenager, Sunantha got involved with the spirits. People respected her and were careful to ensure that she didn’t use the spirit’s power to curse them. Sunantha loved the feeling of power, and found that it was a lucrative business entering a spirit trance and telling people’s fortunes. But the spirit became more and more demanding. It forbade Sunantha from eating certain foods and forced her to complete rituals to please it. She had to borrow money to meet its demands and if she left any unmet, it would punish her, hunching her over until she could complete the right ceremony. One day, while Sunantha was bent double by the spirit, her brother Somchai came to see her. He too had had an evil spirit living in him. Due to the evil spirit, Somchai had been too drunk to hold down a job and was constantly fighting with other men because of his adulterous habits.

OMF International www.omf.org.uk entry on page 46

But something remarkable had happened. Some OMF workers had prayed, Jesus had cast out the spirit, Somchai had become a believer and now he was free. He gave Sunantha a copy of the Bible, and prayed for her to be able to stand up. And straight away she did! As soon as her brother left, Sunantha asked Jesus to cast out the spirits. She began to read the Bible and, as she prayed, she was released.

For the first 18 years, it felt as if they saw very little fruit. There were occasional moments of light but they were always short-lived. It seemed as if everyone was working really hard but seeing very little progress.

Everything changed when the family decided to move into a new house in a different area of the city. They were joined in their home by Fatima, a Muslim background believer with an incredible testimony of God’s hand upon her life. Mary so enjoyed having Fatima around and the two ladies were able to pray together regularly. As Fatima’s faith in Jesus began to grow, so did her desire to share the good news with her friends, family and all those in her existing social networks.

Eventually, the time came for Mary’s family to take a few weeks’ holiday. When they returned home, they discovered that ten of Fatima’s friends and family had come to faith in Christ through her testimony. One by one they had asked if they could read the Bible with her and had come to realise that they too could follow Jesus. Over time, more and more Muslims came to the Lord and more groups formed in the area as new believers shared their faith with family and friends. There has now been so much progress amongst these new believers that Mary’s family are looking to begin new work amongst Muslims elsewhere.

n a g e b e f li y m y a d The Georgie Christine worked in Brazil with BMS World Mission for many years; she first met Paulo 16 years ago. She told us, "When Stuart [my husband] and I first met Paulo, he was living in a hovel in a São Paulo shanty town. Where he lived was so bad, I wouldn't have put my dog there. “There were rats everywhere. He had a wife and 14 children but was continually drunk and gambling.

“We were church planting there in those days and regularly had Bible studies in people's homes. If Paulo was around when we came in the house, he'd run out the back door. Then one day he stayed for the Bible study and soon after was converted. Paulo says, “that was the day my life began.” At that time he was 62 years old.” The change in Paulo was immediate and hugely visible. He got a job and stopped drinking, smoking and gambling. Paulo started to take an interest in where he was living and began to take care of his wife and children.

After six years he decided to leave the shanty town. Georgie says, "He'd saved up Where he and bought a plot of land, built some houses on it, and got his family to lived was so move out of the shanty town." All his bad, I wouldn't family became Christians, one by one: his wife, his children and his have put my dog grandchildren.

Your life can make a difference. BMS World Mission has people working all over the world, endeavouring to bring God’s new life to the world’s most vulnerable people. Find out what part you can play!

Just before Georgie and Stuart left Brazil last autumn, they visited Paulo. "It was an emotional visit," said Georgie. "It was amazing to see him living in a really nice house, and lots of his family living nearby in the same street." When Stuart went to see him, he was overwhelmed by the change in his life. “Visiting him in his new home,” said Stuart, “gave me an idea of what heaven must be like!”

All his family became Christians, one by one: his wife, his children and his grandchildren.

Many people today barely survive through spiritual and material poverty. When will their lives begin? Scripture encourages us to do something about it: ‘Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter.’ (Proverbs 24:11) ‘I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.’ (John 10:10)

e r a c l a c i t c a r p g n i w o h S s r o o d l a u t opens spiri MECO works with churches and aid organisations to offer practical help. Here Brenda and Colin* describe their recent personal experiences and illustrate how important prayer partners are to their work. Imagine working in a country where people have never heard the name of Jesus and the authorities want it to stay that way. Your home will be searched, your actions analysed, your friends and colleagues killed, and the people you work with will tell you that they fear for your safety. Brenda and Colin work with a development charity in a culture hostile to Christianity. Their stories illustrate how the support and prayers of brothers and sisters in Christ are enabling them to show the love of Jesus in practical ways. How encouraging for them to know they are not alone as they seek to improve the quality of life for those around them! “Part of our work here includes what we call Capacity Building, or teaching the local people how to develop their communities and improve their standard of living,” explains Brenda. “Colin has many skills that are needed here, so he serves by providing the necessities of life to people less fortunate and ‘give a cup of water in Jesus’ name’.” (Mark 9:41) “Until recently people have been living off food provided by relief agencies. Their diet was limited to just the basic necessities. We want to improve their overall health and well-being, so we offer training in health, sanitation, personal hygiene, first aid, home nursing, food processing and cooking skills.”

When doors open ... Living in this way means that Brenda and Colin are witnesses 24/7. “We have to be very intentional in all we do because people are watching us,” says Brenda. “They know we’re Christians and we have to be careful what we say. But when a meeting is officially opened, a sura from the Qu’ran is usually recited. And then we are often asked to pray or read from our Holy Book too. It’s an amazing door that the Lord opens for us.”

32

christianvocations

Other doors have opened too. Meeting with other ‘internationals’ leads to conversations and loans of books and Bibles. Connections with teachers, and through them students, mean many people have learned about Jesus through the popular video-film. But life in this part of the world is unpredictable.

“Just today one of our staff was talking about the risks westerners face. He said, ‘We need you here. What will we do without you? No one will care, or come and help us like you’re doing and then we’ll just die.’ It was a good reminder to us why we are still here. So, until the Lord tells us it’s time to leave, we’ll stay.” *Names changed

Trusting in the faithful God But even in the uncertainty, Brenda knows they are acting in God’s plan. “We could only survive this because God has raised up partners, faithful people to pray and support us through letters of encouragement, financial support, and consistent prayers on our behalf. We are so thankful for the faithful family of God. We’re a long way from home, in a strange and difficult place. It’s such a blessing to know that we’re not forgotten.

Transformation –

We often take for granted that we can go to church, contact our minister whenever we feel the need, buy Christian literature, and openly acknowledge our faith in Jesus without fear. But for millions of Christians, life isn’t like that. In the Middle East and North Africa many Christians have no access to Christian teaching or worship, and many live with discrimination and persecution on a daily basis. One ministry has responded to this need through satellite television. SAT-7 is a network of four Christian satellite channels broadcasting programmes in Arabic, Farsi and Turkish across this needy region. Our viewers testify to the difference the programmes have made in their lives. Morocco

“One day I was watching television, flipping through the channels. I came across your wonderful channel SAT-7. The programme was of a young man giving his testimony. He shared that after he met Jesus his life was totally changed. “At that time I was really searching for God and meaning for my life. I was sad, discontent and I couldn’t find satisfaction in anything; there was always a feeling of emptiness and fear. I was touched by this young man’s testimony and jealous when I heard him saying that he felt peace, joy and love surrounding him as he was talking of Jesus and expressing how close He is to him.

by Satellite

“I started looking for the Bible and found a very old one in a book store that sells used and old books. For a month I was reading the Bible daily and one day after I finished reading I fell asleep with the Bible still in my hands. I dreamed that I saw a light and a voice said, ‘the light is in your hands.’ I woke up and was very confused but I started searching for how to be a Christian and saved. “Please pray for God to protect me and for me to grow in knowing the Lord Jesus. I was dead but now I am alive, I was blind and now I can see. God bless you richly and use you more to spread the Good News.”

Iran A man from Iran called and said: “Your programmes are having a great affect on our lives. All my family have become Christians. I like Reza (one of SAT-7’s presenters) because he explains Christianity in a way that is easy to understand.” A man from a northern city in Iran called and said: “I was a member of an underground church but unfortunately the government people found out about our cell church and closed it. I watch your programmes regularly. Please pray for me, that God helps me to find a group of people to worship with.” A man who is a lawyer in Iran called to say, “I have been watching your programmes for the last three months. They are very impressive and I want to give my heart, my money, my career and all my life to Christ.”

Taking the Narrow Road in West Africa Idrissa is a cheerful old Fulani man. He is tall, toothless and a regular visitor to my house – I give him coffee and he sucks on a baguette until it dissolves. Idrissa tells me stories about the Fulani of old and I tell him stories about Iisaa Al Masiihu (Jesus the Messiah). Not long ago, Idrissa said to me, ‘The things you say about Jesus are interesting, but how do I know what you say is true when the marabouts (Islamic teachers) are saying something different?’ Somehow my usual academic answers didn’t seem appropriate here. So I told him to pray to Allah before he went to sleep and ask him to reveal himself. He came to my yard in the early morning – I was still bleary-eyed – and he said ‘Mi hoyDi ko hulDini’ (I have had a frightening dream). Idrissa recounts his dream… “I was driving cattle along a road. I came to a fork leading to a wide road and a narrow one. I herded my cows onto the wide one. It was full of people and trucks. Then my cows started to die, hitting the ground – thwump! So I turned round and took the narrow road. That road was sweet - there was millet on both sides, the whitest white! And I saw women drawing water from wells, deep and sweet.” Without hesitating, I grabbed a Bible, found Matthew 7:13 and read it. I had never shared this passage with Idrissa before that day. The old man said ‘Allahu Akbar!’ (God is great).

Recently I had to walk down the hill from Faith in the twilight. There weren’t any cars passing to offer me a lift and it was quite dark. However, I was escorted almost all the way by several fireflies that zipped by – quite rare around such a big facility, but fantastic! In class, after several weeks of excited anticipation, my third-graders reached the stage of our Egyptians Social Studies project where they studied Mummification. To get us into the mood, we ‘mummified’ some chickens! Out with the entrails – on with the rubbing alcohol and a cascade of salt for preservation. You can imagine the squeals from the girls – and some of the boys too!

Charis, a member of Frontiers, was delighted to see how quickly Salima’s faith grew and before long, she had joined with other local believers to study the Bible and pray together. However, worshipping Jesus was a dangerous delight for Salima. The night before her baptism, she discussed with Charis the possibility that she might be killed for possessing and handing out invitations to her baptism. Her calm exterior was betrayed by the tears rolling down her face as she said, “I understand that I might be killed, but for an opportunity like this it’s a Salima’s interest in God’s word had started when she met an English girl at a coffee shop near her home in Central Asia. Having struck up a risk I’m willing to take.” friendship, the two would meet to study the New Testament in Salima’s local language. Five bullet shots in quick succession crack the stillness of the early morning. The lifeless body of a young woman falls to the ground, her blood soaking into the hard clay of the street. Later that day, her attackers justify the murder of a defenceless girl with the accusation that she had been ‘proselytising’: a charge quickly dismissed by all who knew her as unfounded.

a ic fr A in d n u ro G w e N g in k a Bre A Frontiers worker in Africa witnesses God moving in amazing ways. Last week the team saw the Lord move in an amazing way. In attendance were about 60 men and 20 women, among them top religious leaders in the area, commanders and the political leaders of the people. At the graduation ceremony for our training, one of the commanders stood up to express how the Lord had touched him. Fighting back tears, he shared that he knows God has sent us to the area to bring this incredible message to their people and he thanked the team. He said it was as if somebody had poured oil on his heart and then set it on fire! A religious leader and traditional singer wanted to share a spontaneous song that was in his heart. Without even knowing what a church service should look like these people broke into a spontaneous celebration of Jesus. That day two people were healed.

We are involved in a variety of projects ranging from healthcare, including work with orphans and disadvantaged children, to English teaching and Bible translation. We need Christians of all denominations to fill vacancies currently existing including medical personnel, teachers, social workers and administrators.

Wycliffe Bible Translators

Our passion is for everyone on the planet to have access to God's Word in the language which speaks most clearly to them. This can only happen as teams of people with the relevant skills, including speakers of the different languages, work together to produce alphabets, reading guides and translations of the Scriptures. This is stretching, difficult work, but it isn't just about expressing God's message of love in different languages: the translated Scriptures mean that this message becomes real in people's lives down through the generations.
