Italy and the Adriatic 10–19 September 2014 Rome and Slovenia Options

Dear Texas Architects and Friends of Architecture, We’re pleased to introduce the Society’s first opportunity in many years to participate in architectural travel: a luxury cruise from Rome to Venice. The trip includes the Italian Riviera and the coasts of Greece, Montenegro, and Croatia, and ends with a full day and evening in the port of Venice. This 9-night cruise truly encompasses the best of the Mediterranean! “On the ground” architectural tours will be offered in Sorrento, Venice, and Rome, and Dan Hart, AIA, past-president of the Society, will lead seminars prior to the other port calls. In addition to the luxury of a Silversea Cruise, also offered are 1, 2, or 3 night pre-cruise options in Rome and a 3 night post-trip to magical Slovenia with excursions to the Julian Alps, Lake Bled, and marvelous wineries. Camaraderie and friendships are always outcomes when architects travel together and enjoy architectural tours. We hope you will join us in this outstanding exploration. Warmest regards, James Perry EVP/CEO Texas Society of Architects

Sorrento / Amalfi Coast / Sicily S e p t e m b e r 1 1 -1 3 , 2 0 1 4

Our cruise spends two full days in Sorrento opening up the beauty of the Amalfi Coast. You can choose from optional excursions to Pompeii and Herculaneum, the Isle of Capri or the romance of the Amalfi coastal villages of Sorrento, Positano, Ravello and Amalfi. You also have the opportunity to explore Naples, Italy’s third largest city. After the Amalfi Coast we stop on the beautiful island of Sicily. You will have the chance to visit Taormina, Mt. Etna or some of the filming locations of The Godfather. Sorrento / Amalfi Coast - September 11-13, 2014 | Page 5

Corfu / Kotor / Dubrovnik S e p t e m be r 1 4 -1 5 , 2 0 1 4

Corfu

is one of Greece’s most popular islands. It is also the northern most island with lovely, green landscapes, dense vegetation due to the many winter rainfalls, long golden beaches, one of Greece’s prettiest towns, Byzantine churches, several museums, Venetian fortresses and lively nightlife. The capital and main port of Corfu is one of the most elegant and impressive ones in Greece and every civilization that occupied the island such as the Venetians, the French and the English have left some architectural elements.

Kotor

is located in Montenegro at the end of an unbelievably beautiful fjord that is the largest outside of Norway. The city of Kotor is straight from the Middle Ages, built between the 12th and 14th centuries, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This visit combines stunning natural beauty and a rich history, making it one of the many highlights we visit along the Adriatic Coast. “Those seeking paradise on earth, should come and visit Dubrovnik,” wrote George Bernard Shaw. The United Nations has declared this medieval town a World Cultural Heritage Site. It is filled with churches, monasteries, palaces, squares and fountains of the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque Style. This “Pearl of the Adriatic” is for all to admire. Hvar / Zadar S e p t e m be r 1 6 -1 7 , 2 0 1 4

Hvar is the sunniest of all the Dalmatian Islands and a real gem favored by the Mediterranean yachting crowd. Hvar is a unique blend of Mediterranean nature, rich cultural and historical heritage, and a sexy playground for the jet set. You will have the opportunity to visit all of the major landmarks of Hvar, which was once the most important Venetian Harbor in the Adriatic.

Zadar

is a Dalmatian city with over 3,000 years of history and features many Medieval and Renaissance monuments. Known for its beautiful bays and beaches, Zadar offers a very unique architectural achievement, the first sea organ, with the music created by the waves of the Adriatic. Venice

S e p t e m be r 1 8 -1 9 , 2 0 1 4

We spend a full day and night in the always lovely and charming city of Venice. This sanctuary on a lagoon is virtually the same as it was six hundred years ago, which adds to the fascinating character of this city. Soak up the lively atmosphere of St. Mark’s Square, explore the 9th century St. Mark’s Basilica and visit the many rooms of the Doge’s Palace. Of course you can find your own hidden treasures as you stroll the cobblestone streets of this magnificent floating city. Great food, wine and shopping are around every corner. Mediterranean Indulgence The Texas Society of Architects is pleased to offer the Mediterranean as a destination under the guidance of former TxA President Dan Hart, Parkhill Smith and Cooper. Positano, labeled a world cultural heritage site features the Italian Vernacular style along with the influences of Moorish architecture. The Amalfi Cathedral looms impressively atop 62 broad stairs with Arab-Sicilian stripes, arches and mosaics, and medieval bronze doors. Rector’s Palace in Dubrovnik is a unique mixture of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque style. Guided architectural tours (4 CEs each) will be available in Rome, Sorrento and Venice and on-board seminars (one CE each) will preface the visits in each of the other cities. From ancient to present, diversity is the architectural gem throughout this spectacular region. Welcome aboard! Texas Society of Architects | Page 15
