In 1691, a group of Spanish explorers and missionaries ventured into the San Antonio River Valley and found a Native American settlement called “Yanaguana,” meaning “refreshing waters.” The day, June 13, was the feast day of the Portuguese St. Anthony, and thus the place and the river were named “San Antonio” in his honor. Early Spanish settlement of San Antonio began with the establishment of the San Antonio de Valero Mission (now The Alamo) as a means to reassert Spanish dominance over Texas from the nearby French in Louisiana.

San Antonio grew to become the largest Spanish settlement in Texas. When Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna unilaterally rescinded the Mexican constitution of 1824, violence ensued in many provinces of Mexico. In a series of battles, the Mexican army was forced out of the anglo settlement area northeast of San Antonio. Under the leadership of Ben Milam, in The Battle of Bexar, December 1835, Texian forces captured San Antonio from forces commanded by General Martin Perfecto de Cos, Santa Anna’s brother-in-law; that following spring, Santa Anna marched on San Antonio and “Remember the Alamo” became a rallying cry in Texas’ eventual success at defeating Santa Anna’s army.

The significance of San Antonio within Texas history is vast.

It is a place of great purpose, from its early Franciscan missions to the 1950 founding of Texas’ first museum of modern art; and from its lush and meandering Riverwalk to its Fortune 500 companies. Its mixture of cultures makes it both beautiful and exotic. Frederick Law Olmstead once described San Antonio as having a “jumble of races, costumes, languages, and buildings.”

So it is to this celebrated and revered city you are invited to associate your particular brand of “Purpose,” and similar to the Olmstead description, find a jumble of definitions, values, and motivations to reveal the fundamental human need for guiding ideals that give meaning to action.

elcome to the Texas Society of Architects 71st Annual Convention and Design Products & Ideas Expo. Our theme is a strong one–Purpose–and we hope that it resonates with you and throughout the convention. There is no better city than San Antonio, the “mission” city, to host us, with its fine examples of purposeful architecture to be highlighted throughout tour offerings, selected seminars, and workshops.

We will challenge you with learning opportunities and provide social events throughout the week in which you can network, reconnect with old friends from across the state, and dialog with industry experts.

We will tantalize you with new products and technology. Whether you are looking for tools for sustainable design or new techniques for thwarting water penetration, you will find plenty to choose from in the Expo… and while you are there don’t forget to take note of the new VIP lounge for TAC contributors.

While we are in a uniquely creative business, there are nevertheless some business basics that apply to all design firms. Beginning with profit/loss fundamentals, participants will walk through an annual net revenue forecast, labor expense forecast, and overhead expense forecast, then use these three components to build a simple but effective fiscal-year financial summary. Finally, this financial model will be easily manipulated to evaluate various hypothetical “what-if” revenue and cost scenarios.

Swimming against the tide of “starchitecture,” some architects have sought to design solutions more connected to the history, geography, and culture of their setting. This workshop explores “discipline of place” as a strategy for designing projects that are more convincingly a part of the natural and cultural environments in which they reside. Gatekeepers in the architecture profession profoundly disagree whether design should be universal or rooted in local contexts. Gruesel takes the latter view. In an era of scarce resources, the ability to “design local” is a crucial skill set. In the course of his presentation, Gruesel will step you through the millennia-old pursuit of universal design solutions and their failings, explore the essential ingredients for place-based architecture, and teach skills for anchoring buildings firmly in a natural and cultural context.

In the past century, the ten deadliest natural disasters include floods, earthquakes, cyclones, and tsunamis, with death tolls ranging between 80,000 and well over two million. One of these top ten is the January 12, 2010, earthquake in Haiti.

The region experienced at least 52 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or greater, and an estimated three million people were affected by the quake. Approximately 250,000 residences and 30,000 commercial buildings collapsed or were severely damaged.

Since January, Architecture for Humanity (AFH) has been in the field assisting the people of Haiti. Founded in 1999, AFH is a nonprofit that helps architects apply their design skills to humanitarian efforts. Last year, their work engaged 1,250

As Mayor of Austin, Will Wynn worked to raise awareness of the problems associated with climate change and link effective public policies needed to deal with the challenge. Features & Attractions Earn All 18 AIA/CES Learning Units – Pay One Fee Architects who are required to attain 18 units to maintain membership in the AIA can get all of them easily and without additional tickets for workshops or tours. VOLUNTEER TO HELP A STUDENT Host a Student TSA is calling on San Antonio architects to host students attending the 2010 TSA Convention in their homes on Thursday and Friday nights (October 14 & 15) providing lodging, breakfast on Saturday, and transportation to and from the convention center if needed. Please check the appropriate box on the convention registration form if you are willing to help a student (or two) limit their cost to attend, and likely make a friend for life.

Mentor a Student TSA members have a unique opportunity to spend some convention time with an architectural student. Students will let TSA know if they wish to be paired with a TSA architect or associate member at the convention.

Your commitment requires only a little time and a small amount of money (otherwise interpreted as an investment in the future of the profession). Mentors will spend a few hours on Friday (preferably in the Expo) helping the student understand what convention offers and how to get the most from their convention experience, introducing them to your colleagues, and answering questions they may have related to practice.

On Saturday, mentors and their students attend the Annual Awards Luncheon together with tickets purchased by you for yourself and the student. Students and their mentors/hosts will be briefly recognized during the event.

This is a unique opportunity to further introduce an architecture student to the profession: they will gain something not found in campus life. Please help TSA fulfill this worthy goal to interested and engaged students. General Information AIA/CES Learning Unit Hours (LUHs) Licensed architects attending continuing education programs receive learning unit hours (LUHs) in accordance with the guidelines established by the AIA Continuing Education System (see individual session descriptions for number of LUHs applicable to each program). AIA architects must successfully complete 18 hours, eight of which must address health, safety, and welfare (HSW) of which four hours must address sustainable design. Use the badge scanners at each session to record your participation. For further information regarding annual requirements, view www.texasarchitect.org.

Continuing Education for Architects Licensed in Texas The Texas Board of Architectural Examiners requires architects licensed to practice in Texas to complete eight hours of continuing education annually pertinent to health, safety, and welfare. At least one hour must be related to barrier-free design; and at least one hour must be related to sustainable or energy-efficient design. For additional information, visit www.tbae.state.tx.us.

Registration Policies • General registration for design professionals includes all regular continuing education sessions beginning Thursday afternoon through Saturday, two general sessions, and unlimited access to the Expo. The general registration fee for TSA intern and student members is waived if registration forms are received by September 15. To attend a social event, participate in a tour, or attend an EarlyBird Workshop, you must purchase a ticket. Space is limited for many events, so please register early.

• Do not fax and mail your form; use only one method to register. If you fax your form, do not call to confirm TSA’s receipt. Expect technical difficulties and delays when registering by fax if you wait until the day of the deadline.
