PROTOTYPICAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

Healthcare Design

Healthcare Studio

Software: Revit, Enscape, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign

Guiding individuals through periods of rest and healing, symbolized by the serene embrace of a moody, calming sunset. The prototypical intensive care unit cultivates an environment that nurtures individuals on their path towards inner peace and well-being, providing a sanctuary where they can replenish, recover, and find solace in the midst of life’s challenges. The 18-patient room unit features a loop circulation path, with staff support and nurse stations strategically positioned within the inner core. The patient room adopts an inboard floor plan, incorporating a smart frosted glass window that allows nurses to maintain visibility into the room from their charting stations. The patient room design is mirrored, enabling a central nurse station to oversee two adjacent patient rooms simultaneously. This layout also ensures that nurses can quickly locate supplies in each room, as they are consistently placed in the same location.

SPCC VISITATION CENTER

ENHANCING THE VISITATION CENTER EXPERIENCE

CAPSTONE THESIS

Software: Revit, Enscape, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign

An often neglected and vulnerable group of children moving through the welfare system is foster youth. The capstone project ‘Enhancing the Visitation Center Experience for Foster Children and Their Families Through Trauma-Informed Design’ aims to enhance foster children’s well being, security, and growth as they navigate difficult times during custodial transitions. Interior design can contribute to the well-being of children in these spaces by creating a more positive environment with the intent to reduce anxiety and develop a sense of safety and trust towards the adults in their lives. This capstone investigates how the design of visitation centers can affect the overall experience of foster youth and their families during visits. Research agenda activities such as interviews and site analyses identified challenges youth and their families face. In tandem, areas to instigate flexibility within visitation spaces were identified to substantiate design strategies for the Creative Agenda allowing for the development of a trauma-informed design of a visitation center.

Software: Revit, Enscape, Adobe Photoshop

In the realm of education, every experience, interaction, and lesson serves as a building block, akin to the elements of life that compose the very foundations of our existence. STEAMspace, envisioned as a sanctuary of learning, resonates with this philosophy. The multi-story charter school utilizes a projectbased STEAM education program for grades 3rd-5th. Each grade level has a designated classroom, makers space, and computer lab to allow for seamless transitions between subjects. Agile furniture within the classroom allows for teachers and students to adjust the layout as fit for the lesson plan. Materials foster a dynamic learning atmosphere, offering both durability and easy cleanability for daily usage. Color serves as a wayfinding tool on each level, enhancing the sense of place.

The second level holds the 5th grade classrooms with cubbies and retractable partitions between the 3 classrooms. Each grade is provided with a general classroom, a maker space and a computer lab that each hold 16 students for 48 students per grade.

Rochester, New York is home to an ever growing community of creative professionals who continually evolve the artistic nature of the city. The Hungerford, rooted in downtown Rochester, has been home to a number of blossoming artists throughout the years, and it has a historic charm that is reminiscent of Rochester’s history. As the arts expand within the digital age and with remote media jobs becoming the norm, the need for an innovative working space becomes more pertinent. The co-working space, UnityWorks, highlights the creativity of the artists within the Hungerford and gives digital creators a playful space to work, while the pre-furnished leaseable spaces located a level above emphasize the existing industrial architecture within Rochester and the building. The co-working space and pre-furnished suites’ aesthetics contrast each other to highlight the different aspects of the historic Hungerford building. Geared towards the creative individuals within Rochester’s community, the niche co-working space located on the second level keeps a number of the historic architectural attributes while bringing in colorful tones to articulate the artistic nature of the building.
