Prevention and Control of Ringworm

Spring and Summer may be the time to Implement Your Strategy Doesn’t it just make you feel sick when your show animal or sale bull is covered with ringworm patches right at the worst possible time? Ringworm is a skin condition that gets almost no attention in North America probably because it is not considered to be economically important – no production losses, no mortality. However, I beg to differ! I think that this disease does affect the bottom line; especially, for the seedstock producer. Any blemish on an animal, no matter how minor it may be, probably has a negative effect on price. Simply put, if a product doesn’t look good your market is limited. Just ask the person responsible for the fruit and vegetable section at your grocery store! Ringworm can also be a legitimate cause of financial hardship: hide damage may be evident up to 15 months after the skin lesions have healed; and animals with obvious disease may not be eligible for export. This means your shipment of cattle gets rejected at the border and sent back home. Ringworm is common throughout the world appearing in dogs, cats, horses, sheep, cattle and several other species of animals. In all animals ringworm is caused by a fungus; there is no worm involved at all – the name is misleading. It is important to realize that the type of fungus tends to vary with the species of animal. For example, in cattle and horses ringworm is caused by Trichophyton verrucosum, whereas in dogs Microsporum spp. are the most likely culprit. One of my biggest concerns with ringworm is that it has zoonotic potential. In other words, people can get it! Young children, the elderly and city folk would be more likely to contract the disease than farm people. These are exactly the same folks that are more susceptible to E.coli O157, or tainted hamburger illness. The ringworm-causing fungus infects the skin and hair follicles. Most cases in cattle occur during the winter and early spring, the traditional bull sale season, with the typical clinical picture being one of small to large circular patches on the body, limbs and occasionally the face. Face and head lesions are more prevalent in young stock; in fact, I have seen a couple of very severe cases where most of the hair was gone. The skin might actually be raised in the area of hair loss and grey to white flakes or scales of skin are common. Ringworm patches are considered to be only mildly itchy, but will bleed easily if irritated. Dark, cool, rainy conditions seem to favour the occurrence of ringworm as does the keeping of cattle in close confinement. There are a number of treatments for ringworm. Motor oil and toothpaste really are not that effective. If there is any benefit it may be that these products simply limit the availability of oxygen and with diligent application the fungus can be smothered. Griseofulvin-containing treatments should not be used in food animals. Diluted bleach and farm fungicides may have a place, but the possibility of environmental contamination and meat residues might need to be considered as societal interests push our industry to be more responsible. Imaverol®, containing enilconazole as

the active ingredient, is arguably the most effective chemical treatment for cattle; however, animals must be washed every 3 to 4 days for a total of 4 applications making it impractical on most farms. Even after the fungus has been killed hair regrowth can take several weeks. Warm spring sunlight is my personal favourite as it is effective and treatment is easy to administer. When combined with natural hair shedding the patches of hair loss seem to disappear quickly. Sunlight may also prevent clinical disease as I can’t remember ever seeing a case of ringworm in a pastured animal during the summer. Prevention is the best way to deal with ringworm in my opinion. If you have had ringworm on your farm you must realize that fungal spores can last for several months if not years on your equipment and penning material. Wood is especially good for helping to keep the disease around for some time. Buildings and equipment can be disinfected with diluted bleach or phenolic compounds, but practicality may be a problem. Many producers experiencing an outbreak have told me that they had not seen ringworm in their herd for years until the recent purchase of new stock. Quarantining new arrivals for a minimum of 2 weeks might be a consideration; longer if they have an active case. Vitamins A, E and selenium have also been reported to be beneficial for assisting with recovery and adequate levels in the diet may prevent disease or limit the severity. I have never had obvious ringworm on my own body, despite being exposed to it countless times and the majority of infections I have seen amongst those handling cattle are in children rather than the experienced stockpersons. Practical experience suggested that herds that have had an outbreak of the disease were protected from reoccurrence for some time with most clinically affected animals being protected for the rest of their lives. In 1979, a vaccine for the prevention of ringworm in cattle was introduced in Norway which helped to reduce the number of infected herds in the Gausdal region from 70% to 0% over an 8-year period. There is no vaccine available in Canada or the US, but there are ways to provide immune protection for your herd. Exposure of new arrivals with ringworm patches to the rest of the herd including young calves may be effective, but you must be careful as ringworm may not be the worst disease that comes of this practice. If mixing does occur, ringworm will spread rapidly through a naïve herd and only calves born after the event will be susceptible to the disease. One thing we have tried after having experienced ringworm in our yearling bull pen over a couple of winters was to open that pen up during the summer once the manure had been cleared out allowing nursing pairs to go in and rest. As is typical, the cattle would rub on the wooden shelter fence and rails. I believe that the calves were exposed to the fungus and probably broke the cycle without having full-blown disease. This trick won’t be as effective as the number of viable spores in the wood decline over time so being careful with new introductions and contaminated brushes etc. will continue to be important.

N7 Stock Farm is owned and operated by Gerald and Wendy Nykoliation and family. The farm is located four miles south and two miles west of Crandall, Manitoba. The oldest son Allan and wife Carolyn, along with grandsons Ty and Lane, live three miles away, while youngest son Cameron and wife Kaitlin have just bought a farm at Douglas, Manitoba. Daughter Kim and husband Chris live and work in Shoal Lake; although not directly involved in the operation, they enjoy coming out to help with the calves in the spring. The farm is a mixed operation consisting of 350 commercial cows and 130 purebred Black Angus cows. All calves are retained and back grounded or finished out, allowing them to evaluate performance and carcass data within their herd. In 1998 purebred Black Angus were added to the operation with the purchase of six bred heifers; since then select females have been purchased but the biggest influence on the herd has been through the use of AI as the majority of the purebreds are bred in that manner. Showing cattle has always been an important part of the operation, with all the kids going through the 4-H program and participating in Junior Shows in three Prairie Provinces. The Royal Manitoba Winter Fair in Brandon was and is, a not to be missed event. This year Cameron won the All Breed Jackpot Heifer Show with a Net Worth daughter. In June, the cattle were off to Manitoba Angus Gold Show in Manitou, Manitoba, winning Grand Champion Female and Grand Champion Male. In July, the cattle were on the infamous Milk Run. In the fall, the Angus National Show was held in Brandon with the Net Worth bred heifer winning Junior Champion Female. Next was a trip to Agribition with exposure to a new market and to promote their herd. This was their first year to be at the Keystone Klassic Sale in Brandon; they were fortunate to have consigned the high selling Black Angus heifer calf with their other consigned heifer being chosen by Raina Syrnyk, a Junior recipient of the $2000 Grand Moffat Memorial Award which is used to purchase a purebred heifer. At the present time, they are readying a group of bull calves to be displayed at Ag Days in Brandon which has become a major marketing tool, as all their bulls are sold by private treaty at one of these shows or directly off the farm. The Nykoliations are grateful for all the cattle friends they have made over the years and hope to make many more in the years to come. N7 Stock Farm would like to thank Manitoba Angus Association for this award and are truly grateful for the recognition and honor.

Spruce View Angus Ranch Wayne Grant

P.O. Box 174, Killam, Alberta 780•385•2216

Back in the 1970s, American Angus producers set out to create a beef brand for the breed. The goal was never to ensure some arbitrary level of Angus genetics—those ideas were already out there, but not working. In fact, the Certified Angus Beef (CAB) brand was first envisioned after a breeder tried to eat a tough but guaranteed “Angus” steak in a hotel restaurant. So they started with high quality specifications that the best Angus could meet, then built demand for that consistent product until premiums entered the Angus cattle market many years later. It took faith. As breeders, you know some cattle are better than others for maternal traits, calving ease and growth; and not all Angus can produce a premium carcass. As a matter of fact, most can’t. But that’s an opportunity for you now in Canada as it was 35 years ago in the States. For the 80 percent of black cattle that fail to meet CAB specs, nine times out of ten the problem is insufficient marbling to hit the required level of at least average AAA or Prime. Research shows you don’t have to give up any other traits to add marbling, and it is strongly heritable. Therefore, in a few years, your bull customers could make rapid improvement in ability to hit this target, with guidance from their seedstock supplier and Partner. Of course, there are a lot of brands out there today, and each makes promises to consumers. Few are nonprofit brands owned by thousands of producers with sole mission of adding value to their cattle. Few have a record of commanding open market premiums that pay producers. Since Canadian packing plants were licensed to produce CAB in 2000, premiums for the brand paid by all North American packers have exceeded $300 million. Very little of that was paid to Canadians, but the share will increase. After all, it took years to build the brand south of the border. The consumer beef market has shifted to favor more consistently satisfying beef—that’s why as the economy struggled over the past five years, demand for high-quality (as in highly marbled) beef increased at the expense of lower quality. Advantage: Angus— provided you add more marbling focus. Now is the time to lay a quality foundation and develop extended networks. Now is the time to start talking to the other segments of the industry, such as feeders and buyers. Many of them are still oblivious to quality, so move on until you find a cooperating Partner who gets it. You can justify the capital “P” if you work together on common goals to improve cattle coming into the feedyard and then on to harvest at CAB-licensed packers in a system that returns carcass data to guide future improvement. If you are a member of the American Angus Association as well as the Canadian, you are a part owner of this brand, but regardless of that, you can make it work for you because it is simply part of the open market. All you need do is apply strategy, communicate and act. For example: • Work with your bull customers to get their cattle entered in the Beef InfoXchange System, detailed at www.bixs.cattle.ca. The free and confidential gateway to individual grade and performance data can be loaded up with more and more background history. Initial data sets the marks to beat in successive calf crops as you advise them on which bulls will advance their herds.

• Find an auction market Partner and host a breeder-influence sale featuring progeny from your bulls, with all genetic, health and management data to make them attractive to cattle feeders. Then talk to the quality-minded and data-driven cattle feeders again, looking for Partners who want relationships with the owners of those calves. • Host customer appreciation dinners or field days to learn and build a network of similar genetics, health and marketing plans that can grow to add volume to the high quality, thus attracting more buyers and bids and making your customers more money. • Set up a coupon program or rebate on future bull purchases to encourage customers to use the new $17 GeneMax® DNA test http://www.cabpartners.com/genemax/index.php to help discover gain and grading potential in their herds. Some breeders have set up programs that effectively pay for 15 or 20 tests for each bull purchased. Expanding CAB retail presence in Canada A new partnership forged after two weeks, eight training sessions and 111 Real Canadian Superstores (RCSS) launched the President’s Choice Certified Angus Beef (PC CAB) program in early May. CAB executive account managers Heidi Schroeder and Emily Agle traveled across the country, preparing in-store meat department managers and beef specialists to carry the premium beef brand. “We are excited for the opportunity especially in western Canada,” said Agle. “Especially in the heart of cattle country, in the province of Alberta.” RCSS is a grocer under Loblaw Companies Ltd., already a strong CAB brand partner. President’s Choice, a Loblaw brand, is joining forces with CAB to establish the front end of the protein retail market. Competition is heating up with the summer and large retailers like Target and Wal-Mart. “The RCSS team really wanted to provide an offering that will differentiate them from the rest of the crowd,” said Agle. “They have stepped up with impressive improvements in everything about their beef case, from quality, to signage to customer service.”

Today’s Angus Advantage Spring 2012  36

By Chris Poley The real world beef industry has been an extremely “bullish” environment to be in. Starting off with a strong fall calf run, which saw feedlots and order buyers being very aggressive on news of short supply and climbing futures, producing higher packer bids. This continued on into the new year with feeder cattle even higher and grass calves costing well over a thousand dollars. This lead to huge optimism among the cow/calf producers, pushing bred cows in excess of two thousand dollars. It also fueled a record year for bull sales, with quality rancher bulls bringing in excess of five thousand dollars on a regular basis. The markets in the last few weeks have softened, not to a level of alarm, however the packers have pushed the fat cattle lower, sighting sluggish consumer demand as the reason. The discovery of a dairy cow with BSE in California also gave them cause to lower fat cattle; even though, the resulting push back from consumers and importers did not happen; in fact the very next week US exports were still up a healthy margin over the same week the previous year. All things still remain positive in the beef industry; we are just coming up to peak demand time for beef. The summer Bar-B-Q season is just around the corner, which domestically in North America, we still prefer our steaks and burgers over all others, hands down. Exports continue to be strong and we have regained several markets in the last year and the work to open more is ongoing. Well I can certainly appreciate that all parties involved need to make money, and lower numbers available in the market place, does bode best for the cow/calf producer. While he enjoys strong competition for his calves, the feed lots and packers cost of operation go up because they have to pay more and are struggling with utilization rates. However, the old saying “every dog has its day” also comes to mind. The packers have more control than any other player and seem to be quite good at managing their risk. We all still remember quite well how

they basically stole some classes of cattle after the discovery of BSE and made some very large profits that will help them ride out this period of low plant utilization. The feedlot industry is always one of tight margins with the odd home run. Through the years closely following the discovery of BSE in Canada, the feedlots gathered up the majority of government aid available to cover their loses. Also through that time there were some turns of cattle that were extremely profitable, being purchased at very depressed prices and sold into a volatile fat market at the right time. The cow/calf producer is just getting his or her “day in the sun,” having the least control in the whole system; this side of the industry lost the most players through the last eight years. The ones that remain, many of them had depleted their equity down to where surviving much longer looked faint, and retirement equity had been eaten up. The return to profitability for the cow/calf producer was long overdue because without them the feedlots and packers do not exist either. Each member of the industry needs the other and the more that is realized the better; more work as a community would benefit everyone. As much as big corporations like to think they can do anything bigger and better than individuals, it has been proven time and time again that beef calves cannot be mass produced the same way our meat counter competitors can be. We will never be able to take the environmental changes out of beef production because they cannot be managed from a corporate office on Monday morning. In the long run this fact will be to our benefit in a huge way, as the consumers look more and more for wholesome naturally produced protein sources.

Without a doubt, the spring of 2012 will go down in livestock history as the best ever in the current era. We can high-five ourselves, but we must remember that when bulls were fetching $2000.00, pickup trucks were selling for $10,000.00. Those who have been buying iron in the past few years surely know that the increased price in cattle has not narrowed the spread between product and machinery. Granted financial institutions, namely bankers, looked upon cattlemen as the lowest class of citizen with the highest risk following BSE, have now opened their doors again, and to the smell of animal waste attached to our cowboy boots. The BSE era virtually scared and eliminated the majority of youngsters who were raised on farms and ranches with the thought of continuing family tradition (mainly due to banker resistance) but those that remained and struggled were able to add inventory at very affordable costs, are now enjoying today’s market place. It always amazes me that a banker in a three piece suit working in Toronto, Ontario and does not know the difference between a ribeye and a blade, is making the financial decisions for a livestock producer in Consort, Alberta. The last decade of livestock recession has a bright side. It has made producers stronger, more resilient and better financial managers who conduct their business with a higher degree of efficiency. This fact was reflected in the spring bull sale run as more good bulls were sold for higher values. One of the most asked questions are “How long will it stay strong?” The recent BSE discovery of a dairy cow in California merely put a hiccup in the market for a day then rebounded in the next trading session. This shows the strength of the cattle market and its concern with the low inventory numbers reported. The USDA reported that export sales of beef were up 8.8% the week following the discovery as compared to the year prior. As countries throughout the world struggle with financial stability, agriculture and the production of food will be one of if not the main factor leading the planet out of financial recession. Why do you think the leading Asian countries are investing in land and agricultural entities around the globe? This new uplifting success in agriculture will also lead to complacency. It is human nature to assume too much of a good thing. Complacency is very common in the seedstock industry. Change in the twenty-first century is alarmingly rapid. the leading edge of technology, but today many people don’t even turn their faxes on anymore. Most all information and data comes to our offices electronically except for cheques. Seedstock producers will be a major influence to the industry and its market in the decade ahead. The production of superior sires, producing look-alike progeny will be critical and those who succeed in this monumental task will receive high monetary reward, along with great satisfaction. Breeders must forge ahead and constantly improve their product, while staying current with the changes ahead. Remember to fertilize, whether it‘s your crop land or the fertilizer you use in advertising and promoting your herd and program; those who try to save, will be watching from behind! A big change in feeding livestock looms on the horizon. For decades, farmers have fed antibiotics to animals helping them gain extra weight. Producers say they feed drugs to animals to keep them healthy while meeting the world’s growing appetite for cheap meat. But public-health advocates argue that the practice breeds antibiotic-resistant germs that can cause deadly diseases in humans which they refer to as super-bugs. In 1997, the World Health Organization recommended antibiotics used in humans not be used to promote growth in animals. In 1999, the EEC backed a ban on penicillin and other human antibiotics for growth in farm animals. Associated Press reported in April 2012, that the USDA Food and Drug Administration outlined plans to phase out non-medical uses of more than 200 antibiotics over three years. The voluntary plan requires cooperation by drug-makers and producers. Although this move will not change the small farming units who produce hormone free product... but to supply the masses, this change will be a major impact on large-scale meat production operations. No doubt the swine and poultry industries will also be directly affected, but the feedlot industry will have to reassess their position. Does the impending move mean bigger cattle to supply the same amount of meat? Since change is inevitable, producers, especially purebred breeders, must constantly be aware of what lies ahead.
