...it was one of the terms cattlemen from all sectors of the livestock industry used to describe Balancer at livestock shows he was exhibited at. We could list a number of reasons why we selected him to make a contribution to our breeding program, all of which will impact favourably in terms of function and form. This spring 25% of the calves born at the ranch will be sired by Balancer whose stacked pedigree of great individuals is sure to surpass all expectations.

Angus Supremacy in 2012 Many of the major events in Canada climax with an all breeds Supreme show to close the event. Always a crowd favorite, filling the seats! The show committees work hard finding sponsorship and prizes to go along with the titles and bragging rights. The Angus Breed has won more of these Supreme Championships than any other breed!

Paris is a community situated on the banks of the Grand River in southwestern Ontario. The town was first settled in 1829, when its founder, Hiram Capron, bought the land and built a mill on the present town site. The town of Paris was established in 1856. Paris was named for the nearby deposits of gypsum, used to make plaster of Paris. It is referred to as “the cobblestone capital of Canada” relating to a number of aged cobblestone houses. Paris is the home and birthplace of a host of sports celebrities...Alpine Skier, Todd Brooker; Olympic Pole Vaulter, Toronto Maple Leaf hockey player and later an Ontario MLA, Syl Apps; National Hockey League Coach and General Manager, John Muckler; Walter Gretzky, father of Wayne Gretzky, attended high school in Paris from the family farm in nearby Canning; New York Rangers hockey player, Jay Wells and Carolina Hurricanes hockey player, Zac Dalpe, who pitches hay bales each summer at Knill Grove Farms to stay in shape.

In 1969, Howard’s sons, Robert and Allan, purchased the company and expanded the fleet to twenty five trucks. In 1994 on Robert’s passing, Allan purchased his share and continued the family operation. Allan Knill was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 1999; his son Doug and family friend Bruce Poland purchased the company and continue to operate the firm out of the same facility. Doug Knill has a lifetime of experience in the company and the transportation of livestock and freight. The Poland family goes back decades in relationship with H.S. Knill. Bruce’s father was a veterinarian who did all the export testing for the company. Bruce started in 1969 as a part-time employee and in 1976 with his Cab-over Freightliner, worked as an owner-operator and is now an experienced co-owner.

Howard Knill started his career working at the Toronto Dominion bank for six years and discovered, through his clientele, a need for livestock transportation in the highly populated dairy shed west of Toronto. During his evenings and spare time, he constructed a two wheeled box trailer which he pulled behind a little Essex Coupe. With this unit, H.S. Knill Co. Ltd. was founded in 1933 and has been a key service provider in the livestock industry for the past eighty years. From this homemade box trailer, the company grew to a fleet of twenty-five trucks. Howard Knill was a very astute businessman. In the early years most of the business was dairy cattle. Howard would attend sales with his Coupe and trailer where he would stand at ring side and watch who was signing the buyer

Celebrating 80

years

In the early 70’s, the dairy export business was booming as buyers from United States, Mexico and Cuba were purchasing breeding heifers to expand their herds and acquire new improved genetics. Brubachers, Guelph; Hays Farms, Oakville; Shore Farms, St. Thomas, Johnny Walker, Aylmer and David Carson, Listowel, Ontario were all dealers and exporters with shipments virtually every week and H.S. Knill Co. Ltd. was the transporter of choice. Long haul shipments to Mexico, Florida and California necessitated

slips; then ask the buyer if he required transportation for his purchases. In most cases, Knill would get the job and soon buyers expected Howard to be there and often would call him in advance. As the company grew with a rapidly expanding customer base, all classes of livestock were added to their loads. The home base is situated on top of a hill near the outskirts of Paris, on a ten acre parcel of land called Knill Grove Farms. The original Howard Knill house still stands along with a service shop complete with full wash bays and an assembly and storage handling facility with a capacity for over two hundred head. Sidney, Nova Scotia, a docking/quarantine site for all beef breeds imported from Europe. H. S. Knill was the transporter of all beef imports to Canada from the docking site. At the time, the company did not have enough equipment to transport these arrivals and liasoned with Roberge Bros. Trucking, Lloydminster, Alberta to assist H.S. Knill with shipments from the Port of Montreal to their new homes in Western Canada. In 1975, H.S.Knill developed a “split fleet.” Prior to IRP (International Reciprocity Plan which is a licensing agreement for all states and provinces) trucks would have to be licensed for each specific state and province in which they operated or passed through. This “split fleet” allowed them to transport dairy heifers to many States in the Union and Mexico while servicing the domestic market Canada wide. H.S. Knill has delivered livestock to every province in Canada and all states in the United States of America except Hawaii. (Bruce is still trying to figure out a load to Hawaii ... leaving in late November with a back-haul in early April.) Seasonal tendencies also called for diversification. The company obtained a license to haul general freight to the Western provinces and return with feeder cattle for eastern feedlots. This move required a specific trailer that could accommodate cattle or freight...this easily converted trailer

was considerably higher in cost than a regular “pot.” On May 20, 2003, with three loads of dairy heifers assembled for New Mexico, they got the call... “Don’t load the trucks!” Overnight, H.S. Knill lost seventy percent of their business to an outbreak of BSE (aka “Mad Cow”); as seventy percent of their livestock hauling was across the 49th parallel. Men were laid off; the large fleet of trucks were parked along with the specifically made trailers. Fortunately, they leased the tractors to a general freight hauler, Pelton Transport, to ride out the storm ... but the trailers sat idle. With closed borders and BSE crippling the livestock industry, H.S. Knill put their focus on “back to basics” where it all started ... their Canadian trade.

From the beginning, H.S. Knill specialized in purebred livestock transportation which they maintain to this very day. They have moved and continue to move dairy, beef, hogs, horses, llamas, alpacas, sheep and other species. The service they provide is specialized and unique. Whether they are carrying one animal or an entire load, every animal is just as important as the seller or the buyer. H.S. Knill is the main transporter to various studs and A.I. units; they have transported many of the highly valued livestock in our nation and in some cases the world. Transporting champions and high sellers is common place for the company as they transport cattle for exhibit to all the major shows in North America. The fleet has numerous penning and handling systems available to custom suit the needs of all livestock. Many of the drivers have many years experience. All are trained and now licensed with TQA (Transport Quality Assurance for Pork hauling) and CLT (Canadian Livestock Transport training for all livestock) to ensure the safe handling of all livestock. H.S. Knill drivers have calved cows and milked cows on many a haul...it would amaze you as to what these drivers have done or can do.

For most, purebred livestock hauling seems simple. But consider the fact that a load might consist of various species (beef cattle, dairy cattle, a horse, a few sheep and a handful of hogs) all from different owners being picked up from different sellers and going to an assortment of different new owners. They must be loaded in assemblage in which they can be unloaded without emptying the entire pot at every stop. They must be fed and watered on long hauls and most importantly, arrive safe. The trips are not eight hour runs, but forty-eight hour runs through all types of conditions and hours of the night. Over the past few years with 9/11 and BSE still looming in the past, government regulatory issues with homeland security on both sides of the border have become laborious. The paperwork and the prior notification and documentation necessary for the safe movement of live animals gets more complicated every year.

Today’s Angus Advantage Winter 2013  60

But despite all the pitfalls, H.S. Knill is one of the leading livestock transporters in the nation. Their service mandate is to enhance the safe movement of new genetic breeding stock not only in Canada, but to the entire world. General freight haulers can park and wait for their loads or unloads, but this company carries a living breathing commodity that requires care, nourishment and comfort. For the owners of H.S. Knill Co. Ltd., there is nothing more rewarding than the safe delivery of an animal to its new owner or destination at any time of the day or night as they have 24-7 hours of delivery. The core of the staff consists of owners, Doug and Bruce; Doug along with Bruce’s son, Butch Poland, is the pulse of dispatch; Bruce handles much of the marketing; Sandy Whitford is the office administrator; Brad Gurney

is the shop and yard foreman. The balance of the crew is made up by the dedicated drivers and a group of seasonal workers who have assisted the company throughout the years. Bruce Poland relates their compassion to the livestock industry..... “Many of the breeders and producers who are clients have become close friends ... some own a few animals while others run very large operations. It is one of the pleasures other transport companies would not understand. For owners and drivers, we take it personally!”

MANITOBA ANGUS COMMERCIAL PRODUCER FOR 2012

Manitoba Angus Association is pleased to announce their Commercial Producer for 2012 is... Guild Farms, David, Jim and Muriel Guild, Brandon. The Guilds received a farm sign from Manitoba Angus at the Annual meeting, January 5, 2013 in Brandon, MB. Guild Farms was incorporated in 1975; David, Jim and Muriel Guild being the shareholders. They operate 14 quarter sections of land with about 2000 cultivated acres with the balance being pastureland along the river valley, straight west of Brandon, Manitoba. An additional half section along the river valley is rented for pasture from the neighbors. They have had Black Angus cows for many years. They were involved with the Brandon Research program when they provided the semen for an F1 cow breeding program using Charolais, Simmental and Limousin on their Black females. “To us, the Simmental Angus cross seemed to be the best cattle.” Guild Farms then carried on using Simmental bulls on Black Angus cows until they had a herd of about 200 red white face cows. As the market situation changed Guild Farms used more Red Angus bulls on Crossbred cows, which has now become mostly Red Angus... The basic winter cow ration is mostly barley silage with some slough hay in self feeders. In severe weather and closer to calving time, they feed some additional mix-milled barley and always have free choice 3 to 1 mineral plus selenium available to them. The calves they winter are fed nearly all the barley silage they will consume plus mix milled barley and supplement. The calves sell in February as short keep feeders. Dave was a 4-H member in the Forrest 4-H Beef Club showing Angus calves and received various trophies for the calves, as well as for showmanship. The younger generation (Dave’s children) Dale and Candice were members of the South Brandon Carroll 4-H Beef Club. They have done very well with their Angus cross steers in Steer Shows and sales. Their son Dale is now helping around the farm with the day to day operations. The Guilds state, “Angus has worked in our herd to add docile cows and easy feeding offspring. 37 years ago when Angus cattle were selected to be used in our program, the main reasons were to add carcass qualities and vigor in our calves.” Manitoba Angus congratulates Guild Farms for all their success and hope they continue to use Angus cattle successfully in the future.

L to R: CEO Canadian Angus, Rob Smith; Candace, Dale and David Guild, Dallas Johnston (Manitoba Angus President), Lois McRae (Canadian Angus Director) Seated is Muriel and Jim Guild.

Warts on Your Bull’s ____ A Nasty Little Problem

Penile warts on a bull should never be anything to lose sleep over - they are really nothing more than a nasty little problem or a minor inconvenience. Trouble is - if your bull sale is next week there really is not enough time to deal with the warts and you may be forced to remove him from the sale or risk selling a Decision Deferred bull. Fortunately, cattle warts are not contagious to humans and with minor surgical intervention and a tincture of time even the ugliest mess of penile warts can be resolved allowing you to save an otherwise valuable bull. Warts (papillomas) are caused by a virus called papillomavirus (PV). Papillomaviruses are specific to each animal species – humans, cattle, even rabbits; with almost no cross-species infection. In cattle there are at least 6 distinct types. Most cause benign infections of skin cells; however, one – bovine PV type 4 (BPV-4), infects the cells of the upper gastrointentinal tract and may lead to the development of cancer in cattle consuming bracken fern. Human PVs (HPVs) vary in their presentation too. The vast majority are nothing more but nuisance growths on the skin yet a few have been linked to the development of cancer. Most notable is the now solidly proven link between HPV-16 and 18 in the development of cervical and other genital cancers. The only crossspecies infection that is known of is that of equids (horses, donkeys, zebras) with BPV- 1 and BPV-2 shown to have a causal link to the most common skin tumour of horses – sarcoids: a non-malignant, scar-like growth on the skin. The bovine virus will not replicate in the horse, but causes changes within cells deeper within the horse’s skin which may lead to the development of a sarcoid. Penile warts in bulls are exclusively caused by BPV-1. Bovine PV-1 also causes warts on the nose and teats which probably plays a role in the spread as skin to skin contact, or skin contact with contaminated facilities and equipment is the primary means of disease transmission. Bulls, especially young ones, spend a lot of time riding, promoting the spread of the virus from bull to bull. Bovine PV-1 infection is not associated with cancer, sperm death or abortion and in nearly 20 years as a reproductive specialist I cannot find evidence that it will cause warts in the vagina or on the vulva of female cattle. Some believe that young bulls with warts will be reluctant to breed cows due to pain. In most cases, it is unlikely that bulls with normal libido will be deterred by minor pain associated with warts; more severe cases – perhaps pain could be an issue. Mounting and intromission can irritate and disrupt warts resulting in bleeding. Blood in the ejaculate will kill sperm. Warts are most common in young animals less than 2 years of age and are very contagious. Finding warts

on yearling bulls undergoing a breeding soundness examination is a frequent occurrence. Over the last couple of decades our industry has changed from the sale of 2-year olds to yearlings; therefore, the prevalence of warts may at first glance appear to be on the rise. If penile warts are a new problem in your young bulls then you should look to the potential for contact with young bulls from other outfits. Many herds will have no affected bulls, whereas some may have an occurrence rate as high as 15 - 20%. My own estimates of the prevalence of warts in bulls gathered from several sources and housed at test centres would be 1 to 2% in 2-year olds and 5 to 7% in yearling bulls. The immune system is slow to respond to the papillomavirus despite the presence of very large warts producing large quantities of virus. This is because the entire lifecycle of all BPVs is restricted to the most superficial cells with little to no contact with immune cells. Animals with disrupted or bleeding tumours have a more substantial immune response as do animals undergoing natural regression of the warts. When animals are vaccinated with BPV proteins harvested from their own warts (autogenous vaccination) the immune system responds quickly and remains active for a long time. Preparing autogenous vaccines is not practiced nowadays because of the cost and risk of severe reactions in comparison to the benefit. In other words, given time the immune system will handle the warts, and at a much lower cost. Small warts are easily removed chuteside by the veterinarian performing the breeding soundness evaluation. Larger masses or multiple tumours require much more time, but usually can be removed with patience. Most large and confluent penile warts appear worse than they are. Penile warts typically have a broad head and a much narrower stalk like a cauliflower. Warts around the urethra are more troublesome and may require catheterization so as to avoid significant damage. The blood supply to larger warts can be substantial so bleeding must be controlled. Vets try to remove as much wart as possible because recurrence may occur; however, it is likely that damaging warts and causing bleeding probably stimulates the immune system and leads to a more rapid resolution than if nothing were done at all. Once warts are removed sexual rest for 2 to 3 weeks is a good idea. Severe cases where numerous warts have been removed should be rechecked and any regrowth removed. I would never, ever recommend slaughter of a young bull based solely on the presence of warts. Even the worst looking mess can be resolved even if it takes a couple of tries.

By: Chris Poley

Over the past year or so we have entered a new era as farmers and ranchers. For the first time in my life, producers are getting recognized and starting to get paid for their importance in feeding the world. There is a huge push within the urban population to know where their food comes from. Which I think is a good thing; it draws attention to the primary producers and awareness to the agriculture industry and its needs. This movement of knowing where your food comes from especially favors beef production, as the cow calf sector always has and always will have a strong family farm/ranch influence. It is the hardest production model for corporations to have any success at, due to the amount of land and hands on management required. There is also no way to take the environmental challenges away. Beef cow/calf production is very natural and wholesome and can be easily looked upon by those several generations removed from the land, as the best choice for protein. Many of these consumers today are less influenced by price than they are by making choices based on emotion. If they feel they can relate to those images of a family working out on a ranch together, they are buying more beef. Everywhere you look these days, you will find articles written on the concerns of future food production. In our industry, every media source in North America is talking about the size of the beef cow herd and how it has shrunk to lows not seen in half a century. Yet any government census statistic will report growths in population through the same time period. Cargill

recently closed one of its plants in Texas due to the shortage of available cattle. All the cattle on feed reports show yet another decrease this year over last. Some of you will argue that our cattle markets have not totally shown this and I would agree with you. However, they are better than a couple of years ago and will continue to get better; all the factors point to it. So what is the point of all this rambling? Be confident in your operation, things are good and will only get better and better. The bulls you purchase this spring will be the single most influential decision you make, impacting your operation two years from now. Do some research on the bulls you are looking at and select sires that will improve the things that need improving, without sacrificing the fundamentals, which are ultimately what puts money in your pocket. All of you have a great resource at your disposal, the breeders who produce the bulls. Ask them questions and tell them about your herd and what you want from your next herd sire. They spend their lives researching genetics and watching them perform against each other and know where their strengths are. After all it is a partnership; he needs you the bull buyer, the same as you need him the seedstock producer.

My concern is with the new designation for Canadian genetics! Does anyone out there know what straight Canadian cattle are? Because apparently I don’t know, and the Canadian Angus Association (C.A.A.) doe s not know neither. I have all kinds of peo ple tell me if they are born in Canada they are Can adian, but I do not believe this. I’ll tell you what happened to me after spe nding three hours going through my regi stration papers. I sorted the registration papers out, and separated them from Canadian and American and sent them to the C.A.A. The y kept them for three weeks and sent them back. Two females and one bull had Map le Leafs on the pedigrees. The C.A.A. are trying to make me look like a fool. In my opinion, instead of worrying about a new office, they should be educating someone there on wha t is Canadian and what isn’t. It is my opin ion that they should of had a vote on this mat ter because we all have to pay it. In my opinion there is either American or Canadian or Commercial cattle and I didn’t spend 56 yea rs raising Canadian cattle to just call them commercial cattle. Press Release Manitoba Youth Win Grant Moffat Herdbuilder Awards

Jared Preston, a 17 year old from Ste. Rose du Lac, Kolton McIntosh, a 17 year old from Eriksdale and Rachel Howatt, a 15 year old from Manitou, were the 2012 recipients of the Grant Moffat Herdbuilder Award.

Each of the three youths were awarded up to $2,000 toward the purchase of a heifer calf selected from a Manitoba purebred sale. Jared Preston purchased a Charolais heifer, Kolton McIntosh a Simmental heifer and Rachel Howatt a Red Angus heifer. Grant Moffat, Holmsyde Charolais, Forrest, went missing in August, 2006. The funds generously donated by cattlemen, friends and relatives across the country were offered as a reward for tips leading to his whereabouts. After a year, a committee handling the funds made a decision to channel the money to Manitoba youth for the purpose of starting their own purebred herd. More funds were raised at auctions during a couple of

Manitoba Beef Producer’s Annual Meetings in 2010 and 2011 making it possible to continue this worthwhile cause in his memory. Grant invested a lot of energy in actively helping youth get started in the business and this seemed the most fitting way to utilize the funds. Over 20 applicants submitted essays, making the selection exceptionally difficult. The participants were evaluated on desire, need and previous expression of interest in the industry. The Grant Moffat Herdbuilder Awards will be presented again in 2013, with the application deadline being September 1st. For application and donation information, visit grantmoffat.com. Should you wish to contact the recipients personally, their contact information is listed below: Jared Preston 204-732-2054; Rachel Howatt 204-242-2550; Kolton McIntosh 204-739-5520

The year 2013 could well be called “The Year of the Bull!” .... the next decade will, most definitely, be extremely bullish in the industry of beef production. As supply tightens due to shrinking North American cow herds and changing consumption patterns in the Middle East and Far East, coupled with a slower rebuilding/restocking process, the demand for beef will reach all-time levels. Since the United States is the largest producer and consumer of beef in the world, much of the direction of beef prices is based on their supply scenario. The United States produces more than nine times the amount of beef than Canada, while Canada ranks eleventh in the world for inventory, production and consumption. Drought conditions in Texas and the Mid-west states over the past two years and an aging producer population has driven U.S. cattle inventories to the lowest in sixty years. The last USDA cattle on feed report said there were six percent fewer cattle on feed as of last year, and analysts are predicting a five percent decline in beef production in 2013. In global inventory, India has the most cattle in the world, at nearly thirty-two percent, and is the number one exporter in the world. Poor production methods and religious beliefs place them fifth in the world in beef production. Brazil ranks second for inventory in consumption and production while being the third largest exporter in the world. China accounts for nearly half of the world’s hog production and ranks third in cattle inventory with over ten percent of the world’s population and is the fourth largest consumer of beef. The U.S is fourth in inventory, first in production, the second largest importer, and the fourth largest exporter. Australia is the world’s second largest exporter, while Russia, who is tenth in production, is the leading importer of beef. Just for conversation sake, Pakistan ranks ninth in world production. The rapidly changing consumption trend will be one of the main supply shortage factors. China today has the second largest middle class population in the world of one hundred and fifty-seven million, which will surpass the U.S. middle class in the next decade; therefore China’s demand for agricultural commodities will continue to grow. In addition, China will be the primary driver of global economic growth. Westernization has hit the Far East. Levi jeans, cowboy boots, North American music, movies and clothing are changing their culture and along with this comes change of eating habits. Fast food restaurants serving western cultured burgers and fries are commonplace and virtually growing daily. The world’s two largest fast food restaurant companies have seen enormous growth in the past five years, despite the so-called global crisis as they expand chains throughout the Middle and Far East. McDonalds has twenty-eight thousand franchises spread throughout the globe. Sixty-five hundred McDonalds wholly-owned restaurants showed an amazing earning per share growth of 20.17% in the last five years. Their competition, YUM Brands, is the largest fast food company with thirty-eight thousand restaurants in over one-hundred and twenty countries in the world, posted a five year growth rate at 13.29%. YUM Brands franchises include Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut and Wingstreet restaurants. Annual income spent on food throughout the world shows some very interesting facts. In Pakistan over 45% is spent on food, India 35.8% and China 33.9%, as compared to Canada at 9.1%, the United Kingdom at 8.9% and the United States, the lowest, at just under 7%. For the coming year, global analysts predict North American beef consumption to wane. Countries like China and India, whom have some of the world’s largest populations, will increase per capita consumption. These figures bode well for the future and the beef exporting countries.

For every glowing picture, there is always a dark side. Although there appears to be a strengthening of global economy, the world’s largest beef producer’s government shows signs of instability. Its huge trade deficit is daunting with no easy solution. The U.S. cannot afford to shut processing facilities, laying off thousands in a shaky economy, due to lack of supply. This scenario could well-be good trade news for its bordering countries. No doubt the issue of food safety will be on-going, but the market remains bullish despite the X-L fiasco and Brazil’s BSE masking. The decade ahead offers exciting times and opportunities...we will see investments by foreign parties enter the production and marketing of our domestic product. The ever changing social media and communications will affect this rapidly changing era. Change is endless, healthy and requires a young fresh attitude and enthusiasm. Referring to change, I received this note from a former cattle breeder, Barb Schmidt, to share with others. “One evening a grandson was talking to his grandmother about current events. The young lad asked his grandmother what she thought about the shootings at schools, the computer age, and just things in general...the grandmother replied, “Well, let me think a minute, I was born before...television, penicillin, polio shots, frozen foods, Xerox, contact lenses, Frisbees and “the pill.” There were no credit cards, laser beams or ball-point pens. Man had not invented panty hose, air conditioners, dishwashers or clothes dryers. Your grandfather and I got married first...and then lived together. Every family had a mother and father. Until I was 25, I called every man older than me, “Sir.” After I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, “Sir.” We were before gay-rights, computer-dating, dual careers, day care centers and group therapy. Our lives were governed by the Bible, good judgment and common sense. We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong; and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions. Serving your country was a privilege...living in Canada was a bigger privilege. We thought fast food was eating half a biscuit while running to catch the school bus. Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins. We never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CD`s, electric typewriters, yogurt or guys wearing earrings. We listened to Big Bands, Jack Benny and Foster Hewitt on our radios...and I don`t ever remember any kid blowing his brains out while listening to Tommy Dorsey. If you saw anything with “Made in Japan” on it, it was junk. The term “making out” referred to how you did on your school exam. Pizza Hut, McDonalds and instant coffee were unheard of. Ice-cream cones, phone calls and a Pepsi were all a nickel. You could buy a new Ford Coupe for $600.00...but who could afford one...too bad, because gas was eleven cents a gallon. In my day...”grass” was mowed; “coke” was a cold drink; “pot” was something your mother cooked in; “rock music” was your grandmother`s lullaby; “aides” were helpers in the Principal`s office; “chip” was a piece of wood; “hardware” was found in a hardware store and “software” wasn`t even a word. And we were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby. No wonder people call us “old and confused” and they think there is a “generation gap.” This woman is only 59 years old...pass this on to the old ones...the young ones wouldn`t believe it!
