Changes at the Canadian Simmental Association
he 2017 bull sale season is now completed and it was another successful run for the Simmental breed. Simmental bull sales were once again some of the highlights of all breeds, and saw a significant number of Simmental bulls sell at very good prices. This confirms the quality of the bulls that Simmental breeders are producing as well as the confidence that commercial producers have in the breed. Congratulations to the breeders, sales managers and sales staff that contributed to this success! While these sales were in full-swing, CSA staff and Directors were also busy with the March Committee and Board meetings that were held March 20th and 21st in Calgary. This is always a busy time as we review the progress made since our October meetings and plan for our summer and fall events. 2017 is of course a special year as we will be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Simmental coming to Canada. Some of the items that were discussed relating to CSA promotion were: Simmental ads were continued in the Canadian Cattlemen magazine and were also in the Angus Advantage magazine and the Charolais Banner Commercial edition. The Simmental Award of Excellence (AOE) show recognition program was approved and will be in place for the 2017 Simmental shows across Canada. The new Canadian Cattle Identification Agency (CCIA) approved Simmental RFID tag is now available for sale. These tags are available to CSA members, as well as their customers who have purchased a registered Simmental bull and had it transferred to their name in the past two years. Orders are placed through the CCIA and then shipped from the warehouse direct to you. New Simmental promotional items were unveiled and are available through the CSA office. These include clothing items, flashlights, steak knife sets and pens. A major undertaking for 2017 are the various 50th Anniversary celebrations that are being held across Canada. There are events scheduled in each Province, ending with the Canadian National Simmental show in Regina during Canadian Western Agribition November 20th to 25th. At that time the Simmental Federation of the Americas will also be held and will attract International guests from various parts of the world. Five days of activities are planned and we have a block of rooms booked at the Regina Double Tree Hotel. This location will hold special memories for some Simmental breeders as it was the home of many past Simmental banquets and events when it was called the Regina Inn. We hope that CSA members from across Canada will join us for the party! • To commemorate the 50th Anniversary the CSA is producing a limited 4
number of 50th Anniversary belt buckles. These handmade buckles will be available for order in late April. The Breed Improvement Committee (BIC) discussions included: A discussion was had related to the Cow Calving Ease EPD that was implemented in January 2017. It was felt that this new EPD did not accomplish the goal that was intended with it and also created a degree of confusion so there are no plans to implement it again. At the time of writing this, the economic value indexes API (allpurpose index) and TI (Terminal Index)are being reviewed by the BIC for accuracy and relevance. Lowering the requirement of purebred status of a Canadian bull to 7/8 Simmental, and expanding the upgrading table was again addressed at length with the BIC deciding to not make any changes to the upgrading table.During the meetings, the 2017 Canadian Simmental Convention schedule was approved. This event will include the Canadian Simmental Association Annual General meeting, the Young Canadian Simmental Association National show, and Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation Auction. The Maritimes Simmental Association and CSA staff are working hard on putting together a very exciting event in Fredericton, NB. August 10th – 13th. At the CSA Annual General Meeting there will be vote on by-law changes that will see the removal of proxy ballots. If this bylaw change is approved, proxy ballots will be replaced with a mail-in ballot process. The process proposed is similar to that used by other breed associations and will allow each CSA member to directly and confidentially vote on items such as future by-law changes and on elections to the CSA board of directors. This will ensure that the exact wishes of the member will be followed as well as speeding up and simplifying the AGM registration process considerably. A second bylaw change being proposed this year is to move to a set number of directors for each province or region. It is felt that this structure, which is also used by other breed Associations, will more accurately structure the CSA board to reflect the enrollment, registration and transfer activity in each province or region through a proportional basis. If both by-laws are accepted then these directors would be elected by the CSA membership from that province or region by mail-in ballot beginning in 2018. We encourage you to contact one of your CSA directors or myself for further information regarding anything mentioned in this article and check www.simmental.com for updates. All the best with your spring seeding operations and we hope that you will begin making plans to join us at one of the many 50th Anniversary events across Canada!

Fred Schuetze Award
The Fullblood Simmental Fleckvieh Federation (FSFF) established the Fred Schuetze award to recognize breeders who have made a significant impact on Fullblood Simmental/ Fleckvieh cattle. Fred was instrumental in the creation of the Federation and served as a long standing FSFF President; his dedication to the breed is unwavering, and the recipients of this award are equally appreciated for their contributions. The FSFF is proud to recognize Ron Nolan of Bar 5 Stock Farms (Ontario, Canada) as the 2015 Fred Schuetze Award recipient! Congratulations Ron & Carla, and the Nolan family for your incredible stance within our breed!
introduced a “Designed Maternal Crossbreeding System” and started production of Fullblood Fleckvieh cattle in South Africa in partnership with Toverberg Simmentals. Embryos were produced in South Africa, imported into Canada and transplanted at the North American Bar 5 facility. Bar 5 cattle are walking in many countries including the United States, Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico, Chile, Nicaragua, Columbia, South Africa, China, Korea, Pakistan, Australia and New Zealand!
Ron and Carla participated in many shows and were very involved in Simmental affairs. Bar 5 exhibited winning cattle at Agribition, The Royal (in Toronto), Brandon Ag-Ex, and many smaller shows in Canada. They also did exceptionally well Ron & Carla Mae were married in 1957 and have one son, with pens of bulls in Denver, CO. More recently they helped Greg, and two daughters, Shauna & Joanne. The family bought to establish the Fullblood Simmental Fleckvieh show, “The a farm that they called Harkaway Simmentals in Ontario in Pinnacle,” at the NAILE in Louisville, KY. Ron and Carla have 1972. In 1976, Ron attended one of the early Simmental shows both served on the Ontario Simmental Association as Directors in North America, The Toronto Royal, with his cousin Harry and President. Ron has also served on the Canadian Simmental Haney, and fell in love with the Simmental breed. He bought his Association and the Fullblood Simmental Fleckvieh Federation first female in 1979, Kingfield Altise. as a Director and President for each. They began to focus on Fullblood Simmental cattle in 1978. This past summer Ron & Carla regretfully announced the Bar 5 sold its very first polled fullblood bull, Bar 5 Catalyst dispersal of Bar 5. On October 1, 2016, the entire herd and most 639P, in 1983, and its very first female, Bar 5 Ms Pol General, of the semen and frozen embryos were sold. The legacy left by in 1990; Ron bought both. In July 1990, Ron and his son Greg, Bar 5 is second to none. They will be missed by the Simmental and Irving Langill purchased Bar 5 from Emil Stange. Ron & community! In 1998, Ron purchased a group of the very best Article supplied by the Fullblood Simmental Fleckvieh Federation Fullblood Fleckvieh cows in South Africa. In 2002, Bar 5 7
Breed Improvement The Simmental Genomic Voyage – It Starts With a Single Step
T
here has been a lot of discussion about genomics in
Simmental cattle over the last 5 years or so. Sometimes it may seem that things are not moving as fast in the genomics field as they could, or that other breeds, or countries may be leaps and bounds ahead of us. Many breeds have released Molecular Breeding Values (MBV) or scaled values from various tests in addition to various EPD and other selection tools. If you are not yet familiar with the term genomics, it is the study of the animal’s genome, or all of the animal’s DNA. DNA is the molecule that contains the instructions or blueprint for how the animal will grow or develop. That does not mean that every animal will achieve its full genetic potential, but the DNA provides the instruction set that managers work with as they grow and develop their cattle. We have known for many years that changes in the base pairs that make up DNA can result in differences between animals. For example, changing one letter at a location in the horned gene creates a polled animal verses a horned animal. It has only been more recently that we have been able to affordably and effectively search through the genome to find these differences that impact a variety of specific traits. Looking for these slight differences is done using what we call SNP testing. Probably the most common SNP testing you have seen will have a company name or test type attached to it, such as a 50K or a GGP test. These tests look across an animal’s DNA and determine which variation of different SNP markers an animal has. These markers may be related to the DNA that changes a trait (such as horned and polled) or they may have no relationship to the trait we are interested in. For example, we know that the horn gene is near the top of Chromosome #1 in cattle. A DNA SNP marker from the middle of Chromosome 15 will not tell us anything about whether the animal carries the horn gene. It may however tell us if the animal has genes for mothering abilities, growth or disease resistance. Since the tests look at thousands of pieces of DNA, we need to simplify the results to make them useful. This has led to the creation and publication of MBVs (Molecular Breeding Values) in some breeds. A MBV is a prediction of the animal’s genetic merit for a trait using only the DNA test results; it is a DNA EPD. While this improved our ability to apply genomics by simplifying the results, in some cases it also added confusion. Since we don’t know the exact impact of every gene or piece of DNA in the animal, we have to use the SNP information we can determine from the test and interpret the relative impact. In other words, the DNA information provides a good start, but does not produce the entire picture. In some associations that publish MBV, the cattle may also have an EPD calculated from pedigree and performance data that disagrees with the MBV. Sometimes this occurs on high accuracy bulls. The reason is that the performance of progeny involves and accounts for all the DNA interactions that are occurring, while the MBV provides a direct measure of a portion of the animal’s DNA. This is one of the primary reasons that the Canadian Simmental Associated opted not to publish MBV as an interim step of providing genomics to the membership. Another approach has been for associations to use “Blending” to produce EPDs that include DNA results. In a blending approach, EPDs are calculated using pedigree and performance information, and then are “adjusted” after the fact by using the MBV information. This is a better approach than publishing both EPD and MBV as it avoids confusion, and improves the accuracy of the EPD. As the initial EPD has greater accuracy, the impact of the MBV on the final EPD will
8

have less influence. This approach does have some challenges and may result in over or under adjusting of the EPD depending on various factors. As well, there may sometimes be double counting or other issues, particularly if the animal has been DNA tested on more than one platform. Example of an MBV Adjusted EPD: BW MBV Final Published BW EPD BW EPD 5.0 2.5 4.0 0.30 0.45 Single Step The approach the Canadian Simmental Association has opted for is called “Single Step” and is technically better, with a simpler, more user-friendly output. In order to accomplish this simplification for users, the work going on in the background has become more complex, and is done through a system called BOLT. Single step does not use MBV information, instead it incorporates the DNA test results directly and uses them in a variety of ways. In other words, instead of importing 10 MBVs and using them to adjust the EPD for an animal, the system may use 50,000 individual pieces of DNA information available on the animal and adjust for known genes/ genetic influences, hybrid vigour, which portion of genes were passed on to other tested offspring, confirmation of parentage/pedigree and other factors such as degree of relatedness, in addition to including the performance and pedigree information on the animal, its’ ancestors, contemporaries and progeny. This creates a more robust EPD with greater accuracy, but also avoids the issues around having two sets of numbers such as an MBV and EPD for the same trait. It also makes much more use of the DNA information that is available. While the process of bringing the BOLT system online for genetic evaluations has been somewhat lengthy, the first single step evaluation for stayability occurred this spring. The evaluation included pedigree, longevity records and DNA test results directly in the evaluation. The next step of rolling out growth and calving ease are well under way, with carcass also slated for completion. This is an exciting development, as improving the accuracy of selection means that breeders and more importantly their customers can improve their cattle with a more precise focus on specific issues and a greater degree of confidence in their mating decisions.
It is an exciting time in the Simmental breed, and genomics is becoming an important and valuable tool. The application of single step technology to the CSA’s evaluation places it at the forefront of the industry, but also ensures that the membership have one of the most scientifically robust genetic evaluations available.

Remembering
the Last 50 Years
In means of celebrating the last 50 years of Simmental in Canada, Simmental Country is asking those that have been involved from the beginning of the breed for their input on the past, present and future of Simmental. Individuals involved in this panel questionnaire come from different backgrounds from various parts of the country. This feature article will appear in the remaining Simmental Country magazines this year.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 Explain your background and involvement within the Simmental breed – past and present. Ian Mitchell: I have lived in the interior of British Columbia all of my life; I was born and raised on the ranch that we still call home. We run about 275 Simmental cows and 75 red Angus cows. Our cattle spend the summers on range in the nearby mountains, they are ranch raised. I was introduced to Simmentals at a very early age. Our first Simmental calf was born in 1971; it was a Capitaine heifer calf named Beatrice and I remember her well. My dad was a director of the BC Simmental Association as well as the Canadian Simmental Association. I became very involved with the BC Simmental Association serving for nearly fifteen years. In the mid 90s I was elected to the CSA Simmental board serving two terms as a director and wound up as president in 2001/2002. I thoroughly enjoyed my involvement with the Association and the Breed Improvement Committee during that time and afterwards as well. We currently hold our annual sale the first Saturday in April selling about 60 bulls. Barry Bennett: Our family became involved in the Simmental business in the early1970’s. My brother, Bob,took an AI course from American Breeders Services (ABS), which in those days was a relatively big deal as there were very few places where you could take the course and only a couple of companies you could buy semen from. In the beginning we used the newly imported Simmental bulls (Florian -13-, Galant -11-, Kingfield Abricot -441-). Additionally, we introduced three other continental breeds into our tradition purebred Shorthorn herd to determine which breed worked best for us. It became clear that the Simmental cross calves were the best for our operation, and our dad quickly jumped on board after he saw Lacombe Achilles -38- in person at one of the first Canadian Western Agribition shows where he was on display. We then became members of the Canadian Simmental Association and had one of the first membership numbers (#452). Our herd base changed from Shorthorn to Simmental quickly as we never used another Shorthorn bull again. We were active members registering and selling females in consignment sales in south eastern Saskatchewan. My younger brother, David, still maintains a commercial herd of Simmental using only purebred Simmental bulls, so the herd is many generations purebred, but are unregistered. My personal involvement in the breed shifted when I was hired as the first fieldman of the CSA in 1974. When the market had a major hiccup in the late 1970’s the Association downsized. I left the Association in 1976 and began working with Transcon Livestock Services as a fieldman and sales representative working and promoting mostly Simmental and Charolais sales. In 1977 I joined the Agriculture Department of CIBC and grew to become Regional Manager for Alberta. This experience provided me excellent background in financial management in understanding profit and loss in the cattle industry. In 1990 I returned to the CSA as General Manager, during my time with the Association the breed had a period of exceptional growth. The breed became the largest registry in Canada, as well the breed grew internationally as our sales efforts saw live cattle, semen and embryos sold to Asia, Mexico, Central and South America, Australia and New Zealand. Additionally, we saw the introduction of new genetics through the import of South African embryos and the introduction of DNA parentage testing. In 1997 the CSA purchased the breed official publication “Simmental Country” it was published monthly in our Calgary office and quickly became the largest breed publication in Canada through the strong work of Frank Mapletoft, Gaylene Groeneveld and Lori Whiteside and the support of breeders across Canada. When I departed the CSA in 2001for another opportunity it was the largest breed association in Canada, and had developed a North American EPD with the American Simmental Association. This development was seen as a huge step in the breed’s development and reputation in North America. I currently work in Calgary in the private mortgage businessand now watch as my daughter and son in law, Kerrie and Scott Harvie grow their Simmental herd. My interests lie in researching pedigrees and performance records on animals that might be of interest to their operation. So, you might say Kerrie and Scott are now third generation breeders in my family. Kirk Stoddard: Todd Simmentals was started by Richard and Kirk Stoddard in 1972. We went to a local dairy farmer and bred Abricot, Parisien, and then raised half blood Simmental females. We developed these into purebreds over many years. Then in 1976 we purchased our first fullblood female and the herd moved forward to 25 fullblood cows At the turn of the century we decided for a local market of red and black polled bulls. Today we have 60 purebred red and black females on the farm. 10
drew you to the Simmental breed initially? What is it about the breed that has kept you involved in one 2 What way or another? Ian Mitchell: I was drawn to the Simmental breed somewhat by osmosis, my father tried many different breeds and stayed with Simmental. He saw pictures of Simmental cows in Europe and said, “now that is what cows should look like!” Following that we imported our first full blood cattle from Europe in 1972. The Simmental breed has improved our herd immensely. We continue to be amazed at how well the Simmental cattle travel, with tremendous correctness of their feet and legs as well as very good structure of their udders together with their maternal ability and their performance. This is definitely a winwin situation for us and without any doubt the reason that Simmental cattle are the mainstay here. Barry Bennett: Our original cow base was Shorthorn, they crossed extremely well with Simmental, our family was active in 4-H, our steer and heifer projects did very well. It was through 4-H that we showed many traditional commercial and purebred breeds. The benefits of cross breeding, the heifers made excellent cows and the steer calves were
considerably heavier than the straight Shorthorns we usually marketed. They were our choice over the other breeds that were introduced to our operation; they were the “whole package.” “Resiliency,” the Simmental breed (and most other breeds) have been through a number of “fads,” from frame score 9 and 10 show winners that fell out of favor with the commercial cattlemen to smaller frame thicker cattle that are either; red, black or traditional red white face cattle. Simmental have rebounded from a frame score 10 to functional cattle that are preferred by a growing number of commercial cattlemen that want more from their cowherds. Kirk Stoddard: At the time in the 70’s the Simmental breed was very exciting and a lot fun activities with new friends and people. Throughout the years the main attraction that kept us involved is the variety of genetics the breed has to offer.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3 What are some significant changes that you have seen with Simmentals over the last 50 years? Ian Mitchell: It started out that Simmentals were very hard calving when artificially inseminated to the Hereford cattle that we started with, there were many C-sections and other growing pains. The sales of the halfblood cattle were phenomenal, selling for huge amounts of money. The halfbloods were all a tremendous improvement over the cattle that we had. In time, the Fleckvieh cattle became more prominent selling for new highs and having a massive influence in the Canadian herd. As with other trends, this passed to a large extent with the influx of the red and black cattle and then finding a balance. When I reflect back, I see that we have made tremendous improvements in the calving ease and the udder shape of our cattle! I guess we have adapted cattle that are more suited to our conditions!
Barry Bennett: My comments above about the breeds resiliency from missteps taken in the show ring are the biggest changes seen. The Simmental breed has remade itself so it can provide the commercial industry with bulls that have very acceptable and predictable birth weights and are well accepted in the feedlot industry. Simmentals are now making a much bigger impact in the commercial feedlot and replacement female industry than where they started 50 years ago. I believe the Simmental breed has a lot of room for growth within the Canadian cattle industry. Kirk Stoddard: Major improvements over the years would be the data collection, EPD’s, carcass etc. With these tools it then developed thicker cattle that finish with more effeatey and quality of meat.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4 What are some of the main highlights or accomplishments you’ve witnessed over the years with Simmental? Ian Mitchell: It has been a pleasure to witness, in part, the first million-dollar sale held by Ted Turmuende of Diamond S Ranch in the early seventies. On a personal note, having the first full Fleckvieh bull calf born in North America in 1973. A bull which we later sold to Henry Gunster, his first Fleckvieh bull! I remember Henry coming in and saying that he had 82 live calves from 81 cows and that this was the only bull he had. I remember that an exceptional calf was 450 pounds coming home from the mountains in the fall and now walking the same trails an exceptional calf coming out of the mountains is nearly 1000 pounds! As well, a first calf heifer that doesn’t bring in a six weight calf is frowned at. Barry Bennett: Simmental breeders have addressed the calving issues that occurred when the original import bulls were used on the traditional1970’s British cowherd. As well the breed has maintained its growth and maternal values that were the initial strengths of the breed. The introduction and advancement in EPD’s has allowed breeders to
identify and follow bloodlines that are best for their operations. EPD’s have replaced ROP programs and within herd ratios. Possibly the biggest advancement over the past 50 years is in the embryo transfer technology, breeders can now identify their best females, mate them with the best bulls available thereby giving them the opportunity to improve their herds in a much shorter time frame. Kirk Stoddard: There are a lot of highlights but some that I remember are: Splitting a bunch of guys up at Agribition and having a hockey game. Going to a Ritzland sale in Edmonton, Alberta with Dean and Lyndon Having a sale in Ontario with Transcon Thanksgiving weekend. Meeting Bill Small and learning about the different types of feed from east to west Bryce Poland!! Going to Waterloo Ontario with Gerald Donovan with a bull to sell and meeting Dennis Ericson.

5 Where do you see the breed sitting today within the beef industry? Ian Mitchell: The Simmental cow is respected as a maternal leader. Cows that produce the heaviest calves, as a rule, have Simmental as a component of their genetics. Simmental cattle cross extremely well with all of the other major breeds. We also have an extremely wide genetic base with enviable carcass merits within the breed. With a swing back to yield based production and heavier carcass weights the Simmental cattle are positioned very well within the industry. Barry Bennett: Without doubt Simmental is sitting in a position
for continued growth within the commercial cattle industry. Cowherd size continues to grow;managers of these operations want to improve their profitability through improvements to their bull batteries, the more information Simmental breeders can provide on their bulls the more successful they can be. Simmental is up for these challenges.. Kirk Stoddard: I feel the breed is sitting very well due to the genetic variations and the people involved. We all need to remember that the people make the breed what it is today.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------6 Suggestions you may have for the Simmental breed or young individual looking to start within the breed? Ian Mitchell: Having seen the pendulum swing a few times I would suggest staying the course in the middle of the road, let’s not chase a frame score ten and let’s not revert to a frame score five, we still need cattle that are efficient and that can perform. I was always told that good cattle will pull you through! Not necessarily expensive cattle, and not necessarily highly promoted cattle, just good cattle! Don’t ignore your commercial customers, they were likely there when you started, through good times and hard times, they will likely be there when you are gone. They appreciate fairness and honesty, and will support you as long as they know you stand behind your product. Barry Bennett: WOW, the future has never looked brighter. The cattle industry has changed from when I first worked for the Association in the early 70’s. The Internet, electronic marketing, social media, cell phones are all new technologies since I first worked for the CSA. While we had a computer it filled an air conditioned room and crashed regularly, it is now the size of a desk top computer. Registrations are accomplished from the breeder’s home office, video feeds allow on line bidding, social media is making a major impact on marketing and cell phones allow you to make marketing calls while you are doing other on
farm jobs. What has not changed is how hard and engaged all breeders and more specifically young breeders must be to make an impact on the breed and as importantly, profitability to their operation. The YCS program (as well as, 4-H and all breeds junior programs) gives breeders the ability to engage at a younger age and develop their own philosophy and breeding goals much earlier. Young breeders must identify what and where their market(s) are and work toward this goal. Remember your marketing area has grown from the early years of an hour drive from your operation,to your province or country. Good Luck!!! Kirk Stoddard: Suggestions for the breed; I guess that the most important thing is to enjoy what you are doing. The purebred industry can be so much fun and easy, if you allow it to be so, or as some breeders make it such a challenge to get ahead of another breeder. As a group we should be pleased when we are at shows of 200 plus head, this shows a strength of numbers and also the diversity of the breed. Encouraging the younger generation is definitely important for the breed to continue, and these people have to understand there are long days with very few paydays.

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF
SIMMENTAL IN CANADA! It’s hard to believe that it’s been 50 years since the first Simmental bull, Parisien, was imported to Canada. This was an event that created history and changed the Canadian Beef Industry. Since then the Simmental Breed has been a tremendous success story as it has progressed into becoming one of the most influential beef cattle breeds in North America.
Simmental breeders from across Canada are preparing to celebrate our 50th Anniversary events. Be sure to mark your calendar and plan to join the excitement! More details to come in the upcoming months. For any questions please contact your Provincial Simmental Association or Rae-Lee Erickson at the Canadian Simmental Association office rerickson@simmental.com

urebred breeders are constantly striving for the perfect reproductive bull, and go to great measures to select for scrotal size. It has long been accepted that scrotal size is a good measure of sperm production. Larger testicles generally produce more sperm, and the bull on average is more fertile. Purebred producers with testicular size being moderate to highly heritable (0.4-.75) have been very successful over time increasing the testicular size of bulls in all breeds. There are still breed differences that are acceptable, and various lines within breeds will have differences in testicular size. What needs to happen now in my opinion is to have research looking at maximum limits in scrotal size. Over my career, testicular size has crept up to the point where we are starting to see a detriment to fertility when yearlings get up over the forty plus centimeter mark. So there does appear to be an upper limit for sure. In regards to testicular development, researchers Doctors Kastelic and Thundathil at the University of Calgary Veterinary Medicine, found that nutrition both in utero and especially early in life (before puberty), had a profound effect on testicular development. There was a definite increase in testicular size on bull calves on an adequate nutritional diet versus those on a restricted intake diet. The old adage of farmers saying you can’t starve the head or testicles out of an animal is false. I agree, seeing bull calves on a poor nutritional diet, their head and horns (if horned) and testicles do seem normal size but the optical illusion is if the animal is thin and stunted, those parts automatically seem bigger. Bull calves and their mothers have to be on a good plane of nutrition early, especially in the calf’s first four months of life. This should work well as this is the same time cows need to be on a rising plane of nutrition in order to rebreed. Contrary to this though, overfeeding during or after puberty to try and compensate for poor growth earlier will have a detrimental effect on sperm production and testicular size. Too much fat in the scrotum alters the thermoregulatory effect. Within my career I have seen too many fat bulls with small scrotal size in varying degrees of testicular degeneration. These testicles have been too warm for too long. Some purebred producers definitely get their bulls too fat, which is why there seems to be a higher infertility rate with overfit show bulls. There is a positive correlation as back fat measurements go up, while fertility goes down. When we look at nutrition, not only are energy and protein levels critical but also trace minerals both the micro and macro minerals are critical to testicular development. Proper balancing of the ration with careful attention to the calcium phosphorus ratio as well as adequate levels of the micro minerals such as copper zinc and selenium all play into the equation. The bottom line is that growing cattle need to be on a balanced mineral program throughout their lives. We sometimes fail to realize that especially our bull calves undergo such rapid growth that they can outstrip their nutritional requirements when growing so rapidly. We also need to make sure other aspects are not robbing nutrition such as internal parasites (worms) or lice. Many years ago, it was reported that chelated minerals because of their increased absorption would help increase scrotal size. I found this claim unfounded, and the bottom-line is having your nutritionist balance the ration for your class of cattle and the growth rate they are on and include the vitamins and minerals in this package. I state again that high energy diets post weaning can hinder

reproductive development and function in young bulls if taken to excess. Age at puberty will of course affect scrotal size and some bull calves do undergo very rapid testicular growth from eleven to fifteen months of age. Generally speaking, the greater the body weight leads to reduced age at puberty. As purebred breeders, you have also desired this early maturing as bulls pass their semen tests easier, and they can be sold at a younger age as a satisfactory breeder and breed well as a yearling. Some genetic lines do not reach puberty as early, and as a result testicular development is slower and they may not pass semen exams until some time after or around fifteen months of age. Testicular size I repeat is moderately to highly heritable, so depending on the bull selecting for it should the majority of times be rewarding. However, keep in mind the cow is half the genetic part of the equation so she will have an influence in the outcome as well. Some bulls also tend to pass their genes on more consistently. I have seen where certain bulls never sire a calf with below average testicles and some are very inconsistent. This is called incomplete dominance. Mistakes have been made purchasing U.S.A. bulls and keep in mind their scrotal measurement system is much different. US bulls will measure two to five centimeters less in Canada when measured by Canadian veterinarians under our system. Also, some of the old scrotal tapes used to stretch leading to falsely low measurements. Differences between veterinarians and even between the same veterinarians measuring a bull twice is only one to two centimeters because the newer “reliabull” scrotal tape with the tension device adds more consistency to the operation. Arguments are always made that certain bulls have longer narrower testicles and although some variation in shape definitely exists selection away from the straight-sided scrotum is desirable. I have one large herd where we measure bulls at 9-10 months of age to cull and then again at semen checking time (12-13 months) and the growth patterns through puberty can be very variable with all other factors being similar. Testicle growth over these three months can vary from a couple centimeters to eight centimeters, which is a huge variation. Be wary then purebred breeders, that the exact age of yearling bulls is known because if you calve later or most of your bull calves were born at the end of the calving season or calving was moved back and they average one month younger when measuring than years previous this will have a huge difference on average scrotal size everything else being equal. In the US they adjust scrotal measurements all to one year of age. This may help with age discrepancies but from what I have seen their estimates are just that real rough estimates. This means many bulls bought out of the US have the adjusted scrotal size on an overly inflated scrotal size score. The final points are as purebred breeders be ever cognizant of scrotal size when selecting your herd sires and keep your average scrotal size around the breed average or above and you will cull very few bulls. Look after nutrition as they are developing. Don’t get them too fat after puberty and hopefully there will be no big surprises come semen checking in the spring or at turnout. Bigger is not always better and these huge scrotal sizes (in excess of about 42 centimeters) on yearling bulls are not desirable. Use scrotal size as one of many tools in selecting your herd sires.

On the Road
Ryan Cook Simmental Country Sales Representative elcome to the spring issue of Simmental Country. We as a breed have just finished another strong run of bull sales with many top quality bulls finding their way to progressive cowherds both purebred and commercial. A common denominator this spring was the quality and strength in the volume of bulls available, and you as breeders need to be commended on delivering a product that is sourced by many and standing behind and promoting Simmental together. Congratulations to all involved on a successful sale season!
W
Now as we move into the 50th Anniversary celebrations this summer, you will see the events highlighted in this issue. Take a look and study the events that are close to your region and attend them, as there will be great opportunity to visit about the past, present and future of the breed. There has been many highlights over the 50 years and it’s a time to reflect on what it took to get us
here. Thank the breeders that had the vision to anchor on to this breed in the early years when you see them this summer as they were the pillars that built the foundation for many of us. Thank the commercial breeders that use Simmental as they are the driving force for most of us and promote in many different ways. Lastly, thank yourself for all you do on a day to day basis to improve the breed. As we look to the summer 50th Anniversary Herdbook issue, make sure you contact one of us at Simmental Country to be included in, and have your spot on the map. We are already working on this great issue, so plan ahead and get your program included, because this will only happen once! All the best to everyone on getting cows bred and to a great spring! 21
Amelioration de la Race Le voyage génomique de la race Simmental – Ça débute avec une seule étape
A
22

Everett More
Dr. Everett More from Virden, Manitoba has practised Veterinary medicine for well over 40 years. Although semi-retired, Dr. More continues to play an integral part in both the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair and the Virden Indoor Rodeo & Wild West Daze – two events he has proud to have been a part of for many years. His nearly five decades of involvement with the equine ranching industry in western Canada has provided significant expertise and service to the welfare of horses that contribute to women’s healthcare world-wide. He has been a supporter of local ag societies for over 50 years and remains a registered Simmental cattle breeder, is an exhibitor of Quarter horses and raises bulls and bred heifers for sale.
our deepest sympathies Delbert Enns
Delbert Edwin Enns was born July 12, 1927 the eldest son of Peter and Helena (Rempel) Enns. He was predeceased by his parents and younger brother Robert (Bob) Alvin Enns, his wife Evelyn (Saunders) and son Bradley Enns, sister in law Olga Enns and son in law Ron Oliver. He is survived by daughters Brenda (Dale) McCracken, Wanda Oliver, Penny (Bob) Michalenko, and Carol (Rob) Cooper. Grandchildren Jen McCracken (Chad Lafontaine), Cam (Crystal) McCracken, Lathan (Ashley) Oliver, Sheena Smith, Oarrie Oliver, Brent Michalenko, Ashley ( Mike) Brown, Lexie Cooper, Jax Cooper and great grandchildren Caitlynn Haughian, Brielle McCracken, Aubrey Brown. Liam, Sinead and Aeden Smith. He attended the King George School until Grade 8. In the winters 46 and 47 he attended the School of Agriculture at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon and farmed with his father during the summer. Delbert and Evelyn married on October 18, 1950, in Borden, SK, moved to the farm and lived and worked together for 54 years. Delbert was an avid Simmental breeder and was one of the first breeders in Canada, his membership number was 936. Through this breed he met many people from across Canada, United States and Europe, where they travelled several times. His favorite places to be were on the farm or at the pasture by the North Saskatchewan River where many wiener roasts were held. Family and friends made special memories there. Summer was for camping with the grandchildren. Fall was cattle shows and sales in Lloydminster, Saskatoon, Regina and Edmonton. Community was important to him and served on many boards such as History Book, Anglican Church, 4-H, RM Council, Borden Care Home, and Saskatoon Fall Fair. He knew how to take care of things and had the fashion sense to look good too. Although his machinery wasn’t the newest he took care of it and loved being a farmer. The cattle herd was all sold by 2001 and they moved from the farm to live in Borden. A farm auction was held in June 2005 and farm rented out and eventually sold. Evelyn passed away in 2009 and Delbert continued to live in his own home until October 2012. He then moved into Borden Housing, sold the house in February 2013 and moved to Borden Care Home January 2014. He had lived his entire life in the Borden area except for the last 3 weeks when his health determined a move to the Langham Senior Citizen’s Home where he passed away on April 9, 2017

Glenn Earl Olson
Glenn Earl Olson was born in Rimbey on May 12, 1943 to his parents, Elmer and Ragna Olson. At that time the family lived in the Symonds District south of Rimbey and later in 1949 they moved to the Wooddale district where they farmed and operated an oilfield wireline company. During his high school years at the Rimbey School, Glenn was a member of the school marching band as a drummer. An active member of community groups from a young age, he belonged to the Rimbey 4-H Beef Club for six years and the Boy Scouts of Canada for five years; but his greatest passion was always for the cattle. He purchased his first purebred Hereford cow from Jack Beatty when he was thirteen years old. He also had a keen interest in horses and an eye for good conformation in a breed. When Glenn was just eighteen, he travelled with Howard Trautman by CP Railway to the Toronto Royal Winter Fair with Glenn’s yearling palomino filly. His horse won the Championship prize! This fall Glenn, Kay, and granddaughter Jenna travelled again to the Toronto Winter Fair where Glenn was able to find the same barn in which he had stalled his horse, Secret Pride, in 1961. Glenn farmed with his father until 1963 when he married his loving wife of 53 years, Kay Evernden (nee Muddle). Together they purchased the Alfred Vetsch land and continued farming. He was intrigued with the Simmental cattle when they were introduced in Canada so in 1972 he travelled to Scotland to purchase a Simmental bull. Later he imported two Simmental heifers from Switzerland and began replacing the polled Herefords with Simmentals. Glenn was very knowledgeable about blood lines; the continual improvement of his herd of 300 was his priority. He attended many stock shows and sales and always enjoyed talking with people there. In all his years of farming, it was important to get to town “a few times a day” for a cup of coffee with his friends and the latest news. During the years the family belonged to the Central Alberta Light Horse Association, they spent most summer weekends at with friends. Glenn later became involved with the Alberta Quarter Horse Racing Association, an exciting challenge in racing and an opportunity to travel and meet new friends. Also an avid rodeo fan, he attended most of the major rodeo events on a Glenn was very proud of his children and grandchildren and their many achievements. Since he liked to travel, as his graduated from high school, he and Kay took each of them on a trip to the Maritimes, making happy memories for his family to cherish.

He will be sadly missed by his wife Kay, sons Garry Evernden (Sandy), Kim Olson (Tasha Darby); grandchildren Christopher Evernden, Cameron Olson, Candice Evernden, Nicole Grocock (Nickolas), Jenna Olson, and step-grandchildren, Brandyn and Zackary Darby; one brother Allan Olson (Grace) and one sister Verlie Algar as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Glenn was predeceased by his parents, Elmer and Ragna Olson, and one brother, Lorne Olson.

Kyle Derek Reay
We are deeply saddened to announce the unexpected passing of Kyle Reay. Kyle was a very determined young man and saw things through that he set his mind to such as pursuing his love for his wife Amanda Reay (Libke) in Saskatchewan. He was very involved in the Simmental cattle business and loved every minute of it. Kyle and Amanda enjoyed working alongside his mother and father-in-law Wayne and Linda Libke, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Tyler and Erin Libke. He is also survived by grandparents Don and Bea Bates and Gordon and Pat Libke, along with many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Kyle is the son of Glen and Brenda Reay of Ontario, brother of Tanya (Steve Aljoe), Chad (Emma) and twin brother Corey (April) Reay, all of Ontario. He was the best uncle ever to Dax Libke, Brody Aljoe, Jaxon, Kolby, Payton, Charlie, and Oliver Reay. Kyle grew up in Ontario enjoying hockey, 4-H and Cattle. He owned his own tree business in Ontario before the love of his life Amanda Reay (nee Libke) brought him to Saskatchewan where they built their home together.
Jim Milliner
James Leonard Milliner passed away peacefully on April 15, 2017 at Rockwood Terrace in Durham, surrounded by family. On June 22, 1934 Jim was born to Oliver Milliner and his wife Annie McLean. He was an older brother to Fred and an infant brother (predeceased). In 1956 he married Wilma Wallace from Durham and took over the family farm. Jim and Wilma recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary and are the proud parents of David and his wife Gayle (Abercrombie), Wayne, and his partner Cam Lund, Marilyn and her husband Alistair Stewart. Grandparents of Ashleigh and her husband Neil Cowan, Lynsey, Grant, Fraser and his fiancé Melissa Reid and Adam. They became proud great-grandparents when Ashleigh and Neil welcomed Weston and the new twins Adelyn and Aliza to the family. Jim raised registered beef cattle, first Hereford and then Simmental, winning ribbons at many local fairs. As a committed volunteer, he coached baseball and broomball, led many agricultural 4-H clubs, served for many years on the board of the Dundalk Fall Fair, and was an elder of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Swinton Park. In 1973 he began serving his community when he was elected as a councillor in Proton. In 1978 Jim was elected Reeve of Proton Township a position he held for over 20 years. In 1991 he was elected Warden of Grey County.

Congratulations! Erixon Simmentals Inc. 2016 Purebred Breeder of the Year Dave and Krista Erixon own and operate Erixon Simmentals Inc. at Clavet, SK. Dave and Krista have recently completed the succession of their family farm from his parents Bob and Kim. Throughout this transition their passion for the breed is obvious as they have grown the herd to nearly 200 breeding females and are incorporating some of the best genetics available through extensive A.I and embryo use. Both Dave and Krista volunteer time to our breed and the cattle industry. You will often see them judging various 4-H shows and exhibitions. Arika Kathol has been actively involved in the Alberta Young Canadian Simmental Association for 4 years and is currently in her second year on their Board of Directors. She is 16 years old and lives on her family’s ranch near Drayton Valley, Alberta. She enjoys playing competitive volleyball and staying active. Arika is an honour student in high school and excels in Science and Math. She has many interests and is still discerning her future career but currently hopes to attend University and study Biological Science, as she has a real interest in plants and livestock. She was involved in Beef 4-H for 5 years and especially enjoyed Public Speaking and the interaction with many other young livestock enthusiasts. Growing up on the family ranch has given Arika many opportunities to learn about genetic selection through AI and embryo transplant as well as the importance of herd health. Arika currently has started her own small herd and looks forward to selecting cattle that can be profitable and help her pay for a pickup as she just got her Driver’s License. She is excited to attend the IGS Youth Leadership Conference in Lincoln, Nebraska.
My name is Tia Schram and I am from North Hill Simmentals located in Bruderheim, AB. I am a ninth year 4-H member, avid stock shower, and Kansas State hopeful. This year has been my first year with the YCSA program, and I am honored to have been selected as the Intermediate Aggregate Champion this past summer in Lloydminster, SK. The YCSA program has given me the opportunity to meet a selection of various breeders across the nation, and form friendships that will last a life time. I believe that the Simmental breed is a very dynamic one, and is definitely a force to be reckoned with in the future. In the fall, I will be a high school senior, and I cannot wait to pursue a degree in Agricultural Communications so I can give back to the industry that has done so much for me. My livestock experiences have taught me to value marketing, and I see my future in that area of the industry. Outside of school I exhibit cattle year round and play high school and club volleyball. Thank-you to YCSA for the opportunity to attend the IGS Youth Leadership Conference in Nebraska this August.
