Changes at the Canadian Simmental Association

he Canadian Simmental Association has many responsibilities that are involved with the development of Simmental cattle in Canada, the resources and tools needed to perform this service are wide and varied. From marketing, to breed improvement and registry services, the CSA staff are involved in a world that is ever changing, and sometimes at a rapid pace. Gone are the days of mail and fax being the preferred tools of delivery of information to our office and this has been replaced by electronic transfer through emails, as well as through our online data entry system. Data entry, processing and information transfer is one of the key responsibilities of the CSA office, and our registry system is the hub for everything we do. Many of you will have noticed by now that the CSA Online System has been upgraded to a new platform, and while most CSA members have been very positive as they have learned to work in the new system, there have been some who have taken issue that a change was made. As a result, I thought it might be useful to explain the reasoning and process behind the move to an upgraded system. The old CSA registry system served our office and members well, however upgrades had not kept pace with our needs. Rather than continuing to work in a dated system, it was clear that there was a need to explore new options. After reviewing several possibilities, a decision was made to change to a platform that was as similar in design to the old system as possible, as well as being cost effective over the long term. Another important factor was the ability of the new provider to provide support service to the CSA and its members. 6

The new CSA registry system best fits those criteria, while having the same basic features as the old CSA Online system, as well as enhancements in the display of the data and a more user friendly search process. Once again, the option chosen was by far the most similar to what our staff and members were accustomed to. Those of you with Charolais cattle will see great similarity in our new system to the one you have been using with your Charolais cattle. Our new system was not specifically designed for Canadian Simmental and is being used by other breed associations as well. As a result, as we have transitioned to the new system, some modifications have been required to facilitate Simmentalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s needs. Some of these modifications have been made while the system has been live in order to avoid the need to shut our registry system down for an extended period of time. Some members have questioned the timing of the change. There never seems to be a perfect time to make any change, and in this case the CSA did have to do it now for several reasons. One being the need to move forward with enhancements including new EPDs, and dollar value indexes that the board had approved some time ago, along with an improved system to provide CSA staff greater efficiency. We recognize that your learning process came near the THE enrollment deadline and bull sale catalogue time, and we appreciate your patience as we all work together in dealing with the change. A special thank you to our CSA registry staff who are working through these changes while also performing their usual tasks in providing service to the CSA membership.

Prior, Proper, Planning Precedes Profitable Purchases

s the bull-buying season gets underway, commercial cattlemen should do their homework to help ensure the bull(s) they purchase this year meet their needs. Like most things in life, preparedness is the key to making an informed decision. In this case, an informed purchase. Remember, bull selection accounts for more than 75% of the gene flow in your herd. Take the time to do the $500/hour work in bull selection and let some of the $5/hour work wait until after bull purchases are made. Before you crack open the sale catalogs of seedstock suppliers, there are few resources and skills you should possess. First, make sure you understand the use of Expected Progeny Differences (EPD) and selection indexes. While EPDs are not the only selection information you should consider, EPDs are the most effective tools available to describe the genetic differences between animals within and across herds. EPDs are much more effective genetic predictors than actual or adjusted performance records. If an EPD is available for a trait it should be used instead of an animalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own performance record for that trait. The EPD removes age and environmental effects that can bias a decision based on actual or adjusted performance records. Use Calving Ease (CE or CED) EPD, rather than birth weight (BW) EPD, if itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s available to select bulls that minimize calving difficulty. CE EPD calculations include BW data and other sources of information that affect dystocia. Not all EPDs are the same, so make sure you know the appropriate information for the breed of cattle you are purchasing. For a useful reference on EPDs and other genetic topics see the Beef Sire Selection Manual (http://www.nbcec.org/producers/sire.html). Obtain the breed average EPDs and a percentile rank table available from the most current genetic evaluation for the breed of interest. Percentile rank tables can be found on most breed association websites. These tools will enable you to

compare the relative genetic merit of individual animals to other animals in the breed. Second, make sure you know what traits you would like to improve in your herd. What breed(s) fit in your mating system? If you are using a crossbreeding system make sure the breed you selected fits your objectives. Other factors to consider are source of replacement heifers and endpoints for progeny marketing (weaning, back-grounded or in the beef). Assessment of these factors will help point you to the best breed for your needs and the combinations of maternal/growth/carcass traits that best fit your operation and environment. Be sure to apply selection to traits that have direct economic importance in your production system. Third, set a realistic budget for bull purchases. Like most things in life, price is driven by quality. Evaluation of a seedstock supplierâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s prior year sale averages will give you an idea of what to expect in terms of purchase costs. A good rule of thumb is that a quality seedstock bull costs roughly the same as the value of 4-5 feeder steers in the current market. The purchase cost highlights the importance of making a well thought out decision. Fourth, get to know your seedstock supplier and make sure he/she knows you and your operational goals. Seek out recommendations from your supplier well in advance of the sale. Once you receive the sale catalog make a short list of bulls (roughly three times more than you actually need to purchase) that fit your specifications. Arrive at the sale site early to inspect the bulls on your short list. Shorten this list of candidates based on conformation and updated data to identify your purchase candidates. Keep the sale order in mind. Stay focused on the bulls you selected earlier. Sticking to your plan will avoid impulse purchases. Remember: Failure to plan is planning to fail. s a new year has begun, may we take the time to be thankful and reflect on the blessings from 2016, while we look forward and prepare for new beginnings in the Simmental breed for 2017!

For the readers who don’t know me, my name is Larry Barkely, and during the 2016 CSA Convention I was fortunate to have been voted on to the Board of Directors. My family and I own and operate Hi-Tech Farms, which was established in 1980 in Ingleside, Ontario. Originally run as a commercial cow/calf operation, we purchased our first purebred Simmental bull in the spring of 1983 from the Ottawa Valley Simmental Club Sale, located at that time in Maxville, Ontario. The docility, power and growth that came with the Simmental cross calves we raised was impressive enough to encourage us to continue with Simmental genetics, and invest in this breed to build our herd for the future. In 1994 we registered the first three Simmental females to carry the Hi-Tech prefix. Since then, we have built our purebred herd up to approximately 85 females. As the years went on I became more involved in the Simmental breed and eventually joined the Ottawa Valley Simmental Club, as well as the Ontario Simmental Association. In the late 1990’s I became a Director with the OVSC and later held a term as Club President. Our family began showing Simmentals as well. We would take cattle to the local County Fairs, giving us the opportunity to showcase our genetics, create new business relationships and make lifelong friends over the years. 20 years later, we still show our cattle at the local County Fairs with the same people. Over the years, we have seen a significant change in the breed. From our original bull we purchased, who had a large frame score with about 3 feet of air under his belly, to the more moderate size cattle with the big performance we have today. It turns out there is not a lot of money to be made on airspace, so the breed has changed in size. Although there has been a lot of variation in the frame score of the Simmental breed, the maternal characteristics, docility, genetic variation and marketability remains second to none in my opinion. Congratulations to the Canadian Simmental Association on their 50th Anniversary in 2017. May the next 50 years be as successful as the last!

s I reflect back on the time since my last article in the Simmental Country, we had a strong fall show and sale season throughout the country with some new breeders getting involved, and purchasing females to start out in the Simmental breed. I enjoyed getting to many of these sales, and having the opportunity to meet many breeders. The Simmental influence is stronger than ever in the commercial market place. The calf and bred female market made a comeback late in 2016 and hopefully will continue into 2017 for producers. Now onto calving and bull sale season; two very rewarding times that a Cattleman has, since you get to see the fruits of last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s planning and the chance to visit with old and new customers regarding the bull power that would work best for their operations. As many of you are well into calving now, I hope that every new bull you used has exceeded your expectations, and that you are excited about your 2017 calf crop. Remember to take the time to visit with your customers to see how prior bulls and females have worked for them. This also gives you an edge in helping to supply them with cattle that suits their needs by knowing their requirements. This spring has many great bulls selling, which is a testament to our breed. The Simmental breed is able to adapt to the changes in the market place, and are accepted by every level of the sector; from cow/calf up to the kill floor. Take the time to evaluate your own program using all the tools at your fingertips, and add new genetics to enhance your operation to keep you in the forefront. Multi-breed Stayability: First EPDs Using BOLT By Drs. Jackie Atkins, Lauren Hyde, and Wade Shafer

It’s here! The Spring 2017 evaluation includes a multi-breed Stay EPD using the much anticipated new genetic evaluation software, dubbed BOLT (Biometric Open Language Tools). The Stay EPD uses a random regression approach to predict stayability developed by Dr. Janusz Jamrozik and colleagues from the University of Guelph and the Canadian Simmental Association. Dr. Scott Speidel at Colorado State University, Dr. Bruce Golden (Theta Solutions), and the genetics team at International Genetic Solutions (IGS) (Lauren Hyde, Wade Shafer, Mahdi Saatchi, and Steve McGuire) worked together to incorporate the new methodology into the IGS evaluation. The new stayability evaluation includes data on animals of varying breed composition, directly incorporates genomic data, produces true accuracy values and provides Stay EPDs to all IGS partners on a common base. Features of the Multi-breed stayability with BOLT: 1) Multi-breed stayability. As mentioned, the new Stay EPD is calculated for all cattle in the database (not just for purebred and fullblood Simmental, as it was in past evaluations). The calculation of EPDs in this fashion required the new evaluation to account for heterosis, which can be sizable for a trait like stayability. Because stayability has a major impact on profit, having Stay EPDs on all cattle will substantially improve the ability of the All Purpose Index to predict differences in profit on hybrid and cattle of other breeds. 2) Direct incorporation of genomic data. This evaluation represents the first time “Single Step” methodology has been used in the beef industry on a large database. The innovative approach refers to DNA marker results being incorporated directly into the genetic evaluation, rather than being incorporated post evaluation or as a correlated trait. Single Step is widely accepted as the most powerful means of leveraging DNA for genetic prediction. The use of a Single Step approach on a large database (the largest in the beef industry) was made possible through the use of BOLT, ASA’s

revolutionary new software developed by researchers Dorian Garrick and Bruce Golden through Operation Quantum Leap. 3) More “accurate” prediction of accuracy. Prior to BOLT, the calculation of EPD accuracy was relegated to using indirect methods that were very imprecise, which commonly resulted in calculated accuracies being a poor estimate of the EPD’s true accuracy, i.e., an EPD assigned a high accuracy may have truly been a low accuracy EPD and vice versa. Until the development of BOLT, the direct calculation of accuracy was thought to be impossible on a large database due to computational limitations. By leveraging statistical methodology unique to genetic evaluation and cutting-edge computer programming, BOLT calculates accuracy directly, thereby making it a much more “accurate” estimate of true accuracy. Because the indirect methods used prior to BOLT tended to overestimate accuracy, you will notice that the accuracies associated with our new Stay EPDs will tend to be lower than the accuracies calculated in the prior evaluation of stayability. This does not mean that we are predicting stayability less accurately than in our previous evaluation—in fact, due to BOLT’s ability to leverage phenotypes and genotypes more effectively we are actually predicting stayability with considerably more accuracy—it does mean that the published accuracy is a better gauge of how much confidence you should have in an EPD. This fact will help seedstock and commercial producers manage selection risk. 4) Change in base. Breeders will see significant movement in Stay EPDs from previous evaluations, not only because of improvements in methodology, but also because of a change in base. However, changing the base does not affect the ranking of cattle; it simply shifts all EPDs up or down by the same increment. For a point of reference, in the prior evaluation 21 was the average Stay EPD on purebred animals born over the last 2 years, where the average on the same animals is 11 under our new system.

here have been a number of articles written over the years on the value of calves receiving adequate amounts of good quality colostrum. With that, colostrum substitutes have also come into greater usage. Several components have led to this change. The colostrum substitutes have become of higher quality, and are more convenient than using frozen colostrum. With less cows needing help during calving, and more producers calving later on grass, heavy producing cows are not around to save colostrum from. It was always considered best to have colostrum from your own cows, which are on your nutritional and vaccination program. The spray-dried colostrum we get from the Saskatoon Colostrum Company with such names as Headstart and Calf’s Choice Total, are pasteurized in the spray dry process, mainly to insure diseases such as Johne’s are not passed on. All batches are also tested in calves as well as in the lab before being released on the market. All the other products sold in Canada are imported from the US. These other companies take out some of the fat, some of the antimicrobial as well as immune factors. There is a large market for these other factors in the human health supplement field. Our local company here in Western Canada does not do that, so all the more reason to shop locally. The heat treatment makes this commercial supplement safer than getting colostrum from say a dairy, where you don’t know the health status. There is nothing wrong with getting colostrum from the first milk of a productive cow in your herd and freezing it for another day. Hopefully she doesn’t have John’s disease, and when you collect the colostrum do it carefully to prevent any manure contamination. Use it that current year or hold over till you can secure more the next year if it goes unused. I find with today’s busy farmers and the reasons previously mentioned, colostrum is not as convenient to get anymore. You can easily save lots of time by being able to rehydrate the colostrum replacers quickly in warm water versus thawing out the frozen colostrum carefully. One of the keys for you as a producer to use them is recognizing how many grams of immunoglobulins are in the product. We have always preached at least 100 grams of immunoglobulin into the calf before ideally 4-6 hours of age. If using a product such as Headstart (60g IgG) it is critical that the calf receive extra colostrum from the cow as this product is designed to be fed as an immediate feeding, and the calf should still be encouraged to suckle the cow in the first few hours of life. The Calf’s Choice Total provides the 100g IgG. These products may seem expensive, but the old adage “you get what you pay for” holds true. The better quality colostrum supplements i.e. those with higher levels of immunoglobulins, are generally more expensive. Beware of the very cheap colostrum supplements, or should I say those touting themselves

as a colostrum substitute. I have often used the example of colostrix boluses touted as a colostrum source years ago. Each bolus contained 0.3 grams of immunoglobulins meaning in order to get the full 100 grams, the dose would be 300 boluses. Somehow I don’t think that was ever done. Inexpensive colostrum sources may also not absorb as well into the calf as they have a lower % IgG compared to the high quality, complete colostrum product. Look at the label. The first and only ingredient should be colostrum. Buy the good substitutes, store them well and follow the mixing directions closely. I think more producers can also think of using colostrum supplements more as partial substitutes. An example of this is twins from an average cow, where both calves have sucked somewhat, splitting a 100-gram package between the two calves insures they both have had enough colostrum. Calves born to poorer milking heifers make the decision as to how much supplemental colostrum to give. It never hurts to give colostrum if in any doubt they have sucked such as a weak calf, a wild mother, a calf from a hard pull, a calf whose mother has very big teats etc. Give the whole package (100 grams of immunoglobulin’s) with good insurance their entire colostrum needs have been met. Colostrum substitutes made from actual colostrum from Western Canadian dairy cows seems like a good idea to me. The more local the better to reflect prevention from diseases you are more likely to have show up in your own calves. At our clinic we used to acquire frozen colostrum from reputable dairies, which had scours, vaccinated their cows. Now most of these dairies contract to the Saskatoon Colostrum Company and the convenience for the farmer of a product easily kept at room temperature and easily rehydrated and fed when it is needed is huge. There is new research, revealing how taking in colostrum sets the calf up for the long term in how fat is metabolized, and results in long term effects on the productivity of the animal. That critical first few hours of life and colostrum uptake have been proven time and time again to benefit the calf for the rest of its life. Lets ensure our newborn calves get that vital amount of colostrum in the first six hours of life. If there is any doubt as to whether the amount was adequate or good quality don’t hesitate to give the colostrum replacer. It is an investment worth making, and will reap many benefits down the line both for that particular calf and for the herd in general, if for instance a herd outbreak of scours could be avoided. This spring have a supply of colostrum replacer on hand because when you need it, you need it now, and I mean right now, within the first four-six hours of life.

Genetic Evaluation Basics and Beyond By: Sean McGrath

There has been a lot of work and bright minds that have developed genetic evaluation technologies and methodologies over time, with current work building on past efforts of a dedicated group of industry leaders. Over the last decade we have seen a lot of changes in evaluation due to a combination of improved data collection systems, enhanced models, great leaps forward in computing power and huge jumps in DNA analysis and genomic research. Each generation of improvement has enhanced the ability to assess the relative genetic merit of our seedstock. It does not mean that the previous versions were wrong, just that we can now do a better job. It could be compared to the evolution of tractors with improvements to suspension, fuel economy and comfort occurring over time. We don’t farm the way we used to, so it is only reasonable that we don’t evaluate genetic merit the same way either. The basic driving theory behind genetic evaluations, is that animals are the result of their DNA interacting with their environment. A simple example would be that an animal has genes for growth which interact with the diet they are fed to produce an animal that gains weight at a specific rate. If animals are raised together in the same environment, then a lot of the difference between individual animals will be due to their genetic differences. At its most basic and extremely rough version, this is an in herd index, the Waterloo Boy of genetic selection tools. EPDs

The second premise of genetic evaluation is that if we can ascertain the genetic differences between animals, then we can use genetic relationships to compare those genetics across herds or groups. This is the first step in producing EPDs and the development of the methodology to do this dates back nearly 100 years. Unfortunately limitations in computing power restricted the scale of this full methodology for many years. As a compromise, the first evaluations ran on what was called a sire/maternal grandsire model, but it still represented a significant leap forward. A Sire/MGS model means that instead of doing math on a full pedigree, we only used the sires to determine relationships. This approach was the best at the time, but by today’s standard of a full animal model, it lacked accuracy. To give an example of why this approach was used, if we look at a complete 3 generation pedigree there are 14 animals 52

back to great grandparents. In the sire/MGS model this is cut down to 7. When you multiply the possible genetic relationships, they are reduced by orders of magnitude using a sire/MGS model. This is where the CSA evaluation started at. As computers got exponentially more powerful, full animal models were adopted. This meant that every animal with a record had their full pedigree relationship analysed, and used in evaluation (both sire and dam). The result was a significant improvement in accuracy of the evaluation with the biggest improvements being in traits that are expressed maternally such as calving ease and milk. Enter DNA Animal models were in use for several years when DNA came on the scene. At first DNA testing appeared as something of an independent with most commercial tests looking for single gene mutations and some people thinking that DNA would replace genetic evaluation. A good example of a single gene test would be leptin testing. These results had straight forward inheritance patterns, and were used outside of the evaluation. There are still a lot of these tests in use today, including colour, horn/poll and genetic defect tests. As DNA technology advanced it became possible to assess a wider array of DNA simultaneously and link that DNA to various traits. These SNP markers are used in the current technology and most of the current generation of tests offered by breed associations. In order to add value to these tests and improve the accuracy of genetic evaluation, EPD called Molecular Breeding Values or MBV were calculated from the DNA results. If one animal had more markers for growth than another, it would receive a higher MBV for growth. These same two animals may also have EPD available from a breed association based on performance data and pedigree. Again, over time, methodology and computing power improved so that the MBV information could be used to improve the EPD of an animal and the DNA, pedigree and performance data came together. The first step in this process was called “blending” and is where most of our evaluations are at today. In essence, an animal has an EPD calculated in a traditional manner using pedigree and performance data. Once the EPD is produced it is adjusted using

available information from the DNA in the form of an MBV. Because DNA can be collected and analysed at a young age, this provides the power to improve accuracy of the evaluation at a young age. To paraphrase, DNA provides us with a lot of additional data that can be analyzed at a young age. A simplified example is shown below. Animal Blended Acc Bull A 30 Bull B 30 Bull C 50

In this example, based on the accuracy of the EPD, we can see that Bull A has a lot of data available on his progeny. The DNA information does not contribute significantly to his EPD. Bull B with low accuracy, sees a significant shift in his EPD, since the DNA provides a significant amount of new information that moves his EPD upward and increases the accuracy. Bull C does not see his EPD change at all, but the addition of DNA to his evaluation increases the accuracy or certainty of our prediction of his genetic merit. The impact of DNA on individual traits will depend on the heritability of the trait, the relative strength of the relationship between available DNA markers and the trait in question and the amount of additional data, such as performance records available. Enter Single Step The latest development in genetic evaluation is called single step and it connects DNA and evaluation in a very real way. Instead of “blending” or combining DNA and EPD information after the fact, single step uses DNA as an additional source of data in the genetic evaluation, just as pedigree and performance data are used. Just as moving to the animal model of EPD calculation, single step evaluation has required a quantum leap in computing horsepower. If we think about the move from sire/MGS models to animal models moving from 7 to 14 animals in a 3 generation pedigree, consider that a single DNA test, on a single animal can easily add 50,000 DNA markers. That is 49,997 more pieces of information to analyze on an animal than a birth, weaning and yearling weight. Additionally, single step analysis can allow us to use that DNA to improve pedigree relationships. If for example a sire and a son have both been tested, it is now possible to see which pieces of DNA were passed on, rather than just assuming that a random half of a calf’s genetic makeup came from a parent. In other words, some siblings are more closely related than others. This strengthens the traditional pedigree/

performance aspect of the evaluation, but it also empowers the DNA trait analysis because it allows for consideration of the impact of specific markers on a trait throughout the entire pedigree tree, rather than applying a simplified adjustment after an EPD evaluation. The single step approach also helps to identify and correct potential pedigree information on the fly. The new system adopted by the CSA that uses single step calculation is called BOLT (short for Biometric Open Language Tools). This is a fancy way to say that the hardware and software that makes up BOLT is the 600 horsepower, GPS/autosteer equipped, four-wheel drive tractor with overlap control of the genetic evaluation world. Like previous advancements in genetic evaluation technologies, BOLT will not result in massive reranking of animals, but it will provide a much more robust picture of where animals fit relative to each other, and it also provides the framework to evaluate new traits much more effectively, similar to the way the animal model enhanced the evaluation of maternally influenced traits. I am certain based on history and some knowledge of the work that is ongoing at the moment, that over time we will continue to see improvements in genetic evaluation. Some will come gradually, and others will be of the transformational variety. Genetic evaluation technology is being applied in most, if not all of the biological breeding industries including plants and animals and will continue to assist in decision making to enhance profitability and functionality of beef cattle.

Jim McMillen It started in 1969 when a local AI technician bred half of McMillen Ranching’s Hereford and Angus base cowherd to Simmental (Parisien) and the other half Charloais. In their feedlot and cow calf operation, the Simmental sired calves excelled, and the next year Simmental was chosen as the way to go. McMillen Bros. (Jim and Mike) registered their first half blood Parisien, Galant and Bismarck calves in 1971 under the name of McMillen Bros. The farm was incorporated in 1973 and membership was issued as McMillen Ranching Ltd. The first of 3 imported females were MRL Bellette in 1972 followed by Cossette and Diva over the next two years. The first year Jim applied for importation permits, he was declined as government officials didn’t believe he was going to have a future in the Simmental breed. After 47 years, almost 700 registered Simmental breeding females and numerous accomplishments in the breed, here they stand. Jim may be the only importer of Simmental cattle to Canada still involved on a daily basis in the day to day operation of the business. For almost half of a century Jim, his family and MRL have lived and breathed Simmental cattle. Promoting the breed in early years at the first Canadian Western Agribition and Brandon Ag Ex shows, as well as several summer events including Estevan, Swift Current and Yorkton. He was also a founding member of the Border 9 group of southeast Saskatchewan, and southwest Manitoba Simmental breeders. In the 1980’s the prelude to spring group was formed with Mike Bauche, Andy George, Leroy Berry and MRL, promoting and marketing genetics in southeast Saskatchewan. In the early 90’s as the boys came home from playing hockey, they possessed the same passion for Simmental cattle they had been exposed to and enjoyed since they were youngsters. Herd expansion throughout the 90’s and increased promotion and breeding improvements were made displaying cattle at Agribition, Ag Ex, Edmonton’s Farmfair with numerous Champion banners. Over the years, MRL has went from humble beginnings of selling a few half blood bulls out of the front pen in the yard to marketing 175 bulls annually at the ranch sales facility, each year in March, many of which are leading AI and natural sires in today’s competitive Simmental business. Along the way cattle have been marketed to Europe, Australia, Mexico, several U.S. States and Canada wide. A simple philosophy of raising Simmental cattle that are structurally sound, with the ability to excel under ranch conditions with a strong emphasis put on maternal traits and cow families and a modest and honest marketing strategy has developed over the years to stand the test of time. The fourth generation is now active on the ranch. As any purebred breeder knows, a lot of hours and hard work are invested but Jim and Georgie and their family Lee and Erin, Dave and Chris, Ed and Marjie, Carolyn and Trent and all the grandkids, would not trade it for anything and feel blessed to have invested in a tremendous breed of cattle involving many great people and friends. It has been a rewarding half of a century and not over anytime soon.

Stan Church was born on a farm in Balzac, Alberta where his father raised purebred Herefords. Notwithstanding his interest in cattle, Stan graduated from law school at 21 years of age and began practicing law in Calgary, Alberta. His initial practice had an agricultural component. In 1968 he acquired his first ranch west of Calgary and continued his own purebred horned Hereford herd.In 1969 he began to act for Simmental Breeders Cardston and was introduced to the Simmental breed. He then decided to breed his entire Hereford herd to Simmental. He began importing Simmentals from Europe in 1971. He took advantage of the strong American market by selling Simmental cattle at the Houston, Fort Worth, Denver and Billings Stock Shows. In 1974 he started his own production sale, a sale that continued until 2006 when he dispersed the last of his Simmental cattle. In 1974, he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Canadian Simmental Association and served as President from 1975 to 1977. During those two years, the Simmental Association began producing their pedigree records on their own computer and amended their Constitution to allow Simmental cattle to be shown. It should be pointed out that Stan Church, as President, indicated that the Simmental Association did not expect there would be any breed improvement through showing the cattle. It was simply being allowed for promotional purposes.In 1984 Stan was elected to the Board of Directors and became the President of the Canadian Simmental Association for the second time. He served from 1984 to 1986 as President and, with the help of Vice-President, Bill Small, the financial fortunes of the Association turned around.Stan Church represented the Canadian Simmental Association on the Canadian Beef Breeds Council and as a Director of the Canadian Cattlemen Association. He also obtained entry of Simmental cattle at the Calgary Bull Sale at a time when it only included the British breeds. Stan later became President of the Alberta Cattle Breeders Association that runs the Calgary Bull Sale. Stan, although he no longer has purebred cattle, has a Simmental cross commercial herd with approximately 400 cows. 54

ob’s first introduction to Simmentals was in 1968 while showing Shorthorn cattle in Billings, Montana. He was touring the Midland Test Station and observed the first halfblood bull and decided he needed to get involved in the Simmental breed. In 1969, Bob helped in organizing the Thomas and Draper families, Ross Mitchell, along with Donn and the Gordon Bros., to form Bar 5 Simmentals. Bar 5 became one of Canada’s most recognized and prestigious Simmental operations in the years following. Bob participated in the first Canadian Simmental organizational meeting in August 1969. In 1970, Bob and the Mitchells toured Switzerland and France to select fullblood cattle for Bar 5 Simmentals. In November 1971, while selling cattle in Calgary, Bob spotted the bull, Lacombe Achilles, who Bar 5, Clements Bar C, and Chester Martin purchased for $52,000. Achilles Cattle Co., was then formed with Bob as the General Manager. Bob displayed Achilles across the United States at major shows like Denver, Fort Worth, Jackson, MS, and Baton Rouge, LA. There was much demand for Achilles’ semen, it was immediately distributed as soon as it could be collected in Fort Collins, CO.

Agribition sold for $18.00 per pound to several Simmental breeders to promote the breed. Later in life, Bob and his wife, Joyce were employed by Western Breeders and Alta Genetics selecting bulls of all breeds. They toured France, Germany and Austria in 1995 selecting Simmental Fleckvieh bulls and embryos. Bob was inducted into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame in 1995 and Bob and Joyce were inducted into the Manitoba Agricultural Hall of Fame in 2007. Bob continued to follow all cattle events during his retirement. Bob passed away peacefully July 29, 2016 at Boissevain, Manitoba. Bob is survived by Joyce, wife of 57 years and children Lois McRae, Shirley Kaufman, Sheila Jensen, Lynn Gordon and Bruce Gordon. Bob’s children and grandchildren are involved in the agricultural industry in Canada and United States.

Avec le développement de la race Simmental au Canada, l’Association Canadienne Simmental doit s’occuper de plusieurs responsabilités et, pour se faire, on utilise des outils et des ressources variés pour fournir tous ces services. Qu’il s’agisse du marketing, de l’amélioration de la race ou des services d’enregistrement, le personnel de l’ACS doit travailler dans un monde en constante évolution, et cela de manière de plus en plus rapide. La période est révolue où on envoyait des informations à notre bureau par courrier et par télécopieur, car tout cela a été remplacé par des transferts électroniques via courriel, ainsi que par l’intermédiaire de notre système de saisie de données en ligne. L’entrée de données, leur traitement et le transfert de l’information sont des responsabilités importantes au bureau de l’ACS, et notre système d’enregistrement constitue la pièce maitresse pour tous nos services. Plusieurs d’entre vous ont remarqué qu’une nouvelle plateforme a été intégrée à notre système d’enregistrement en ligne. Bien que la plupart des membres de l’ACS se sont réjouis de cette transition et ont appris à travailler avec le nouveau système, certains membres ont exprimé quelques préoccupations reliées à ce changement. En fin de compte, je crois qu’il serait utile d’expliquer le raisonnement et le processus ayant conduit à ce changement vers un système amélioré. L’ancien système d’enregistrement de l’ACS avait bien servi les besoins de notre bureau et de nos membres, toutefois les améliorations n’y avaient pas été apportées assez pour couvrir nos besoins. Au lieu de continuer à travailler avec un système passé date, il était devenu clair qu’on devait explorer d’autres avenues. Après avoir regardé plusieurs possibilités, nous avons décidé d’opter pour une plateforme similaire à celle de notre ancien système, et qui serait la moins coûteuse à long terme. Nous avons également considéré l’habileté du nouveau fournisseur à pouvoir offrir du support au bureau de l’ACS et aux membres. Le nouveau système d’enregistrement de l’ACS rencontre ces critères, tout en possédant les mêmes fonctions de 56

base de notre ancien système et en incluant des améliorations au niveau de la présentation des données et du processus de recherche d’information plus facile. De nouveau, nous rappelons que l’option retenue était celle qui se rapprochait le plus du système auquel notre personnel et nos membres étaient habitués d’utiliser. Ceux d’entre vous qui élevez des bovins Charolais verront une grande ressemblance de notre nouveau système avec celui qu’ils utilisent pour l’enregistrement de leurs bovins Charolais. Notre nouveau système n’a pas été conçu spécifiquement pour les Simmental Canadiens et il est également employé par d’autres associations de races. En bout de ligne, alors qu’on effectuait la migration vers le nouveau système, certaines modifications ont dû être faites pour satisfaire les besoins de la race Simmental. Certains de ces changements ont été effectués alors que le système était en fonction, dans le but d’éviter de fermer notre système d’enregistrement pour une longue période de temps. Certains membres se sont questionnés à propos de la période choisie pour faire ce changement. Il semble bien qu’il n’y a jamais un temps parfait pour faire un changement mais, dans le cas présent, l’ACS devait le faire pour plusieurs raisons. Parmi celles-ci, notons l’amélioration apportée par nos nouveaux EPD et nos indices monétaires, lesquels avaient reçu l’approbation il y a un certain temps de la part du conseil d’administration, sans oublier une amélioration d’efficacité de notre personnel au bureau de l’ACS. Nous sommes conscients que vous avez dû vous familiariser avec le nouveau système juste avant la date limite prévue pour le programme “THE” et la période de préparation des catalogues de ventes de taureaux, et sachez que nous apprécions votre patience alors que nous travaillons tous dans ce nouveau cadre. vant que ne débute la saison des ventes de taureaux, les producteurs bovins commerciaux devraient faire leur devoir, ce qui leur assurera que les taureaux achetés cette année rencontreront leurs besoins. Tout comme pour plusieurs choses dans la vie, lapréparation est essentielle si on veut prendre des décisions sensées. Et, dans le cas présent, il s’agit d’un achat sensé. Souvenez-vous que la sélection des taureaux apporte une influence sur plus de 75 % des gènes présents dans votre troupeau. Prenez le temps d’effectuer ce travail de sélection de taureau valant 500 $ / heure, et attendez pour compléter les taches à 5 $ / heure, après que vos achats de taureaux soient complétés. Avant de consulter les catalogues de ventes de taureaux de race pure, vous devez posséder certains outils et connaissances. En premier, assurez-vous de comprendre les principes des Écarts Prévus chez la Descendance (EPD) et des indices de sélection. Les données sur le poids de naissance et d’autres sources d’informations ayant un effet sur les dystocies sont incluses dans le calcul de l’EPD de facilité de vêlage. Une bonne évaluation de ces divers aspects vous aidera à identifier la meilleure race afin de répondre à vos besoins, ainsi que les bonnes combinaisons entre les caractères reliés à la croissance, aux qualités maternelles et aux qualités de carcasse, en fonction de votre élevage et de votre environnement. Assurez-vous d’appliquer une pression de sélection envers les caractères possédant une importance économique directe pour votre système de production. Troisièmement, établissez un budget réaliste pour vos achats de taureaux. Tout comme plusieurs choses dans la vie, le prix est en relation avec la qualité. L’examen des prix moyens de vente de l’année dernière d’un fournisseur donné de sujets de race pure peut vous donner une idée du coût d’achat de votre prochain taureau. En règle générale, avec le contexte actuel du marché, un taureau pur-sang de qualité pourrait coûter un prix environ quatre à cinq fois celui de la valeur d’un veau d’embouche mâle. Le coût d’achat fait ressortir l’importance de prendre une décision bien éclairée. Quatrièmement, connaissez votre fournisseur de génétique de race pure et assurez-vous qu’il / elle vous connaisse et comprenne vos objectifs de production. Demandez des recommandations à votre fournisseur bien avant la date de la vente. Une fois que vous avez reçu le catalogue de la vente, sélectionnez un certain nombre de taureaux rencontrant vos spécifications (soit environ trois fois plus de taureaux que vous avez besoin d’acheter). Arrivez tôt sur les lieux de la vente pour inspecter les taureaux présélectionnés sur votre liste. Réduisez le nombre de candidats potentiels à être achetés en fonction de leur conformation et de l’analyse des dernières données disponibles. Gardez à l’esprit l’ordre de vente prévu. our deepest sympathies Chad Kenneth Harland Chad Kenneth Harland was born in Lloydminster Hospital on March 3, 1990, to Shelly and Blaine Harland. On September 27, 2014, Chad married his best friend and the love of his life, Kelsey Naeth. Chad and Kelsey started their new life together in Lloydminster where Chad worked in the oil industry while spending time at the family farm in Fort Pitt. Chad lived everyday to the fullest. He was always the first to offer a helping hand. He loved the farm, working with cattle, playing hockey with his buddies, and his most recent passion, hunting. More importantly Chad loved his family. He had such a warm friendly personality, always with a smile on his face. Even during the oil down turn Chad kept busy, never complaining and seeing only the positive in everything. Les bases de l’évaluation génétique et le futur Beaucoup de travail et de matière grise ont été consacrés au fil des années dans le développement des technologies et des méthodologies d’évaluation génétique, alors que les travaux courants sont inspirés des efforts précédents réalisés par un groupe de leaders dévoués de l’industrie. Au cours de la dernière décennie, plusieurs changements ont été apportés aux évaluations, grâce à une combinaison de facteurs tels que des systèmes améliorés de cueillette de données, des modèles améliorés, d’importantes avancées au niveau de la capacité des ordinateurs, ainsi qu’en raison d’immenses progrès concernant l’analyse de l’ADN et des recherches en génomique. Chaque génération d’amélioration est venue accroître notre aptitude à estimer le mérite génétique relative de nos bovins de race pure. Ça ne veut pas dire que les versions précédentes étaient fausses, mais plutôt que nous sommes maintenant en mesure de faire mieux. On pourrait comparer le tout avec l’évolution des tracteurs au fil du temps, notamment les améliorations au niveau de la suspension, de l’économie de carburant et du confort. On ne cultive plus de la même manière que dans le passé, il est donc logique de penser qu’on n’évalue pas non plus le mérite génétique de la même façon. La théorie fondamentale soutenant les évaluations génétiques est que les animaux sont le résultat de l’interaction entre leur ADN et leur environnement. À titre d’exemple, un animal possède des gènes pour la croissance, lesquels interagissent avec la ration qu’on leur sert, permettant à cet animal de gagner du poids à un rythme donné. Si des animaux sont élevés ensembles dans le même environnement, les différences observes entre les divers sujets seront dues aux différences génétiques. Constituant ainsi l’élément le plus simple et exprimé le plus simplement, cela représente un indice à l’intérieur du troupeau, l’ancêtre des outils de sélection génétique. ÉPD Comme deuxième prémisse de base de l’évaluation génétique, nous pouvons déterminer les différences génétiques entre les animaux, et nous pouvons utiliser ces relations génétiques entre les animaux pour comparer ces génétiques entre les groupes et les troupeaux. Cela constitue la première étape dans le calcul des ÉPD et le développement de cette méthodologie de calcul remonte à près de cent ans en arrière. Malheureusement, les contraintes au niveau de la capacité des ordinateurs est venue limiter pendant plusieurs années le plein emploi de cette méthodologie. En guise de compromis, mentionnons que les premières évaluations effectuées selon cette méthodologie étaient désignées comme le modèle père / grand-père maternel, et elles constituaient tout de même un bond significatif vers l’avant. Un modèle Père / Grand-père maternel (GPM) signifie qu’au lieu de faire des calculs mathématiques sur la généalogie complète, on n’utilise que les taureaux (pères) 62

pour déterminer les relations. À l’époque, cette approche était la meilleure mais, selon nos standards actuels reliés au modèle animal complet, cela manquait beaucoup de précision. À titre d’exemple démontrant pourquoi on utilisait cette approche, si on étudie une généalogie sur trois générations, on aura quatorze (14) sujets si on regarde jusqu’aux arrières grands parents. Dans le modèle du Père / GPM, le nombre de sujets est réduit à sept (7). En utilisant un modèle père / GPM, lorsque vous multipliez les relations génétiques possibles, elles sont alors réduites en lien avec le nombre de sujets. Voici donc où l’évaluation de l’ACS a débutée. Au fur et à mesure que les ordinateurs sont devenus exponentiellement plus puissants, on a alors adopté les modèles de l’animal complet. Cela voulait dire que la généalogie complète de chaque animal possédant une donnée était analysée, et employée pour les fins de l’évaluation (à la fois pour le père et la mère). Comme résultat, on avait une évaluation dont le niveau de précision était significativement amélioré, notamment avec les améliorations les plus marquées pour des caractères exprimés du côté maternel, tels que la facilité de vêlage et l’aptitude laitière. Ajoutons l’ADN Lorsque l’ADN est arrivé en scène, on utilisait déjà le modèle animal depuis plusieurs années. En premier, l’analyse de l’ADN semblait être une procédure indépendante, alors que la plupart des tests commerciaux considéraient des mutations sur un seul gène et avec certaines personnes croyant alors que l’ADN allait remplacer l’évaluation génétique. Un bon exemple d’un test avec un seul gène est celui de l’analyse pour la leptine. Ces résultats possédaient des schémas traditionnels de transmission génétique, et ils étaient employés en-dehors de l’évaluation. Il existe encore de nos jours plusieurs de ces tests qui sont utilisés, tels que le test pour la couleur de la robe, le caractère acère/avec cornes ou encore pour des tests sur des défauts génétiques. Au fur et à mesure que la technologie associée à l’ADN a fait du progrès, il est devenu possible d’évaluer simultanément une matrice plus large d’ADN et de relier cet ADN à divers caractères. Ces marqueurs SNP sont employés dans la technologie actuelle et dans la plupart des tests de la génération courante offerts par les associations de races. Afin d’ajouter une certaine valeur à ces tests et d’améliorer la précision de l’évaluation génétique, on a calculé à partir des résultats sur l’ADN des ÉPD désignés comme étant des Valeurs d’Élevage Moléculaires ou VÉM. Si un sujet avait davantage de marqueurs pour la croissance qu’un autre, il pourrait alors obtenir une VÉM plus élevée pour la croissance. Ces mêmes animaux peuvent aussi posséder des ÉPD calculés par une association de race d’après leurs données de performance et leur généalogie. De nouveau, au fil des années, la méthodologie et la puissance des ordinateurs se sont améliorées de telle sorte

que l’information fournie par la VÉM a ainsi pu être utilisée d’améliorer les ÉPD d’un animal, faisant ainsi en sorte que l’ADN, la généalogie et les donnes de performance ont été combinés ensemble. La première étape de cette procédure a été désignée par le “mélange” ou ÉPD mixte, et c’est là que la plupart des évaluations se trouvent de nos jours. En résumé, un animal possède un ÉPD calculé de manière traditionnelle en utilisant les données de performance et la généalogie. Une fois que l’ÉPD est produit, celui-ci est ajusté en utilisant l’information disponible sur l’ADN, cela sous la forme d’une VÉM. Puisque l’ADN peut être recueilli et analyse chez un jeune animal, cela nous permet d’accroître la précision de l’évaluation effectuée chez un jeune sujet. Exprimé différemment, l’ADN nous fournit une somme additionnelle de données qui peuvent être analysées chez un jeune animal. Un exemple simplifié est présenté ci-après. Dans cet exemple, d’après la précision de l’ÉPD, on peut constater qu’une bonne quantité de données sont disponibles sur la progéniture du taureau A. L’information sur l’ADN ne contribue pas significativement à son ÉPD. Quant au taureau B ayant une précision plus faible, son ÉPD a subi un changement important, étant donné que l’ADN vient fournir une quantité significative de nouvelles informations, contribuant ainsi à l’augmentation de son ÉPD et de sa précision. L’ÉPD du taureau C n’a pas subi de changement, mais l’ajout d’information sur l’ADN à son évaluation est venu accroître la précision ou le niveau de certitude de la prédiction de son mérite génétique. L’impact de l’ADN sur les caractères individuels dépendra de l’héritabilité du caractère, de l’intensité relative de la relation entre les marqueurs d’ADN disponibles et du caractère, et de la somme de données additionnelles disponibles, telles que les données de performance disponibles. Ajoutons l’approche en une étape Le développement le plus récent au niveau de l’évaluation génétique est appelé l’approche en une étape, et celle-ci permet de relier l’ADN et l’évaluation d’une manière très réelle. En fait, au lieu de “mélanger” ou bien de combiner l’ADN et les informations sur les ÉPD après leur calcul, avec l’approche en une seule étape, on utilise l’ADN en tant qu’une source additionnelle de données incluses dans l’évaluation génétique, au même titre que les données de performance et généalogiques sont employées. Tout comme ce fut le cas lorsque le calcul des ÉPD a été effectué avec le modèle animal, l’approche d’évaluation en une étape nécessite l’emploi d’ordinateurs possédant une extraordinaire capacité de calcul. Si on prend par exemple la transition du modèle père / GPM vers le modèle animal, on passe ainsi de 7 à 14 animaux retrouvés dans 3 généalogies, et il faut également considérer qu’un seul test d’ADN effectué sur un seul animal peut facilement

ajouter 50 000 marqueurs. Cela représente 49 997 pièces d’informations additionnelles servant à analyser un animal que si on ne dispose que du poids de naissance, du poids au sevrage et du poids à un an. De plus, l’analyse en une étape peut nous permettre d’utiliser l’ADN afin d’améliorer les relations généalogiques. Par exemple, si un taureau et un fils ont été tous les deux testés, il est maintenant possible de voir quelle portion d’ADN a été transmise, au lieu de simplement considérer que le veau a reçu au hasard la moitié du bagage génétique de son père. En résumé certains sujets apparentés sont reliés ensemble plus que d’autres. Cela vient non seulement renforcer les composantes traditionnelles de généalogie / performances incluses dans l’évaluation, mais il renforce l’emploi de l’analyse d’ADN pour un caractère, car on considère alors l’impact de marqueurs spécifiques sur un caractère et cela sur l’ensemble de l’arbre généalogique, au lieu d’appliquer un ajustement simplifié après que les ÉPD aient été calculés. L’approche en une étape peut également permettre d’identifier ou de corriger rapidement des informations généalogiques. Le nouveau système adopté par l’ACS et qui emploie l’approche de calcul à une étape est appelé “BOLT” (soit l’abbréviation pour « Biometric Open Language Tools »). Ce nom compliqué signifie en fait que les ordinateurs et les logiciels composant le système BOLT sont semblables à un tracteur du monde de l’évaluation, lequel est muni d’un moteur de 600 HP, d’un GPS / d’une conduite automatique, de quatre roues motrices et d’un système anti-retournement. Tout comme ce fut le cas pour les nouvelles technologies d’évaluation génétique développées précédemment, le système BOLT ne devrait pas conduire à un reclassement massif de tous les animaux. Toutefois, il fournira le cadre nécessaire afin d’évaluer plus efficacement de nouveaux caractères, d’une manière semblable à ce que le modèle animal ait permis d’améliorer l’évaluation des caractères maternels. D’après les travaux qui sont présentement effectués et les avancées historiques, je suis convaincu qu’au fil des ans, nous continuerons de voir des améliorations au niveau de l’évaluation génétique. Certains changements se feront graduellement alors que d’autres seront sous forme de nouvelles versions. La technologie de l’évaluation génétique est employée dans la plupart, sinon dans tous les secteurs biologiques, y compris les plantes et les animaux, et elle continuera de nous aider dans nos démarches de sélection visant à améliorer la rentabilité et les aptitudes fonctionnelles des bovins de boucherie. 2017 Friend of Canadian Simmental Foundation Tryon Simmentals We are extremely pleased to announce that Tryon Simmentals is the 2017 Friend of the Foundation. Frank along with his family have donated the heifer for Lot 1 of the auction. Tryon Simmentals has been breeding Fleckvieh Simmentals since 1986 when Frank along with his father Harry decided to get into purebred cattle. Over the years they have built the herd to 40-45 cows and began marketing them through the fleckvieh forum sale in Ontario from 1998 until they moved to the Bar 5 sale in 2009. They currently run about 45 cows and market cattle through the Eastern Harvest sale. The farm is a family affair with Frank, his wife Lynn and three boys Rowan, Davis and Bradley being involved. Thank you to the Robblee Family for this generous donation.
