2022 Proposed CSA By-law Changes

ince arriving in Canada in 1967, the Simmental breed has had an open herd-book that facilitates an upgrading process using animals of varying amounts of Simmental purity. While none of the mainstream British breed associations moved to that same process, the Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) has very successfully used this process to adapt Simmental and Fleckvieh genetics into cattle that today are highly sought after in the North American beef industry. Upon its formation, the CSA structured its by-laws along with an upgrade table that has seen several changes made to it over the last 54 years. Each of these were made in an attempt to remain current of changing times and to better provide service to CSA members and their customers. While the original by-laws focused on upgrading from a Fullblood or Purebred male, this was later changed to recognize the Simmental female as an equal contributor in the process. However for one inequity remains in the current upgrade table which is a difference in purebred status that recognizes a 7/8 female as a purebred while a 7/8 male is not. Because of this difference, the CSA upgrade table currently recognizes certain matings differently based solely on the gender of the parent Last year, the Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) Board of Directors presented by-law amendments to its membership that would recognize a 7/8 male as a Purebred Simmental, rather than the current requirement of 15/16. This change had been discussed for several years by the CSA board of directors as a result of requests from CSA members asking for changes to be made. To add further context to the discussion it is important to highlight some of the history that has guided the CSA to this point. Over the last 53 years, the CSA has changed the upgrade table in its bylaws several times. - 1970 the upgrade table was added to bylaws. - 2004-06 Maternal (reverse) Upgrading was approved - 2008-09 Fullbloods were officially recognized in the upgrade table - 2013-14 Registered Sires of another breed were added to the upgrade table and upgrading beyond the fraction of the sire was approved Last year’s vote resulted in 62 percent of the eligible votes received being in favour of the proposed change. While the vast majority of the votes approved of the proposed changes it fell short of the required two thirds or 67 percent majority required to move forward. Because of this high approval from the CSA membership, combined with requests from the CSA membership, the CSA board has decided to again put the by-law change proposal to the membership for a vote. There are no changes to the intent of the proposed by-law change this year in that it would recognize a 7/8 Simmental male as a Purebred. This would mirror the 7/8 requirement to attain Purebred status for a female. With this amendment, the genetic contribution of 7/8 males would be recognized 8 at an equal level to 7/8 females which have been recognized as purebreds

since 1970. It is important to understand that this change in no way affects the Canadian Simmental Fullblood registry, nor does it make any changes to Fullblood status. It also does not affect the genetic evaluation (EPDs). While there have been comments circulating that this change is not consistent with the Animal Pedigree Act, the fact of the matter is that there are other Canadian beef breed Associations that already recognize both 7/8 males and females as Purebreds so that precedent has indeed been set. The change of purebred status would also facilitate the amendment to the CSA upgrade table that would recognize the progeny born from the mating of a 7/8 Simmental male to a ½ Simmental female as a ¾ blood calf. That revision to the CSA upgrade table was originally part of the proposed by-law and upgrading table changes which received unanimous support through a CSA membership vote held at its 2013 Annual General Meeting. While all the other revisions to the upgrading table were accepted by Agriculture and Agrifood Canada (AAFC), this specific mating outcome was not approved and the CSA is currently required to recognize the calves from this mating as a 1/2 blood animal. A 7/8 Simmental female mated to a ½ blood male is however recognized as a ¾ blood calf with the reasoning that a 7/8 female is recognized as a Purebred while as stated above, a 7/8 male is not. If the proposed by-law amendments are approved, Purebred 15/16 status would continue to be calculated and published to identify that level of purity, as well as to facilitate the process of developing a 7/8 Purebred Simmental from a recorded ¾ blood parent. This addresses concerns of changes possibly affecting export markets to other countries. It is also very important to note that this change would not result in the Canadian Simmental upgrade table being the same as the American Simmental table which has some distinct differences, including recognizing Simmental animals at less than ½ blood status. Another proposed by-law amendment is to add the option of electronic voting on matters which require input and endorsement from the CSA membership. This would include future by-law changes as well as director elections. Electronic voting will not replace mail-in ballots however will be used to allow another option to our membership and bring the CSA closer to the systems used by similar organizations. The CSA will be mailing out ballots to all active CSA members over the age of eighteen in order to vote on the 2022 proposed by-law changes. Also in the packages will be ballots to vote on three available positions from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario to the CSA board of directors. All CSA members are eligible to vote for each of these positions so please ensure that you follow the voting package instructions and I encourage you to contact one of your CSA directors or myself if you have any questions regarding anything mentioned in this article. We are hoping for a strong return of voting ballots so be sure to vote on these important issues!

One thing is for certain, we can’t predict the future. Our industry has weathered many unexpected challenges over the past two years. While we may not be able to foresee what lies ahead, we can prepare for it. One solid investment we can make is in the next generation – whether its young producers hoping to take over their family operation, or attracting new talent from outside of agriculture to our industry. We need to harness and groom the passion of these young people, so they are ready to lead when their turn comes. Over the past 12 years, we have seen many bright lights graduate from the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association’s (CCA) Cattlemen’s Young Leader’s Mentorship (CYL) Program. Many of these graduates are already making an impact in our industry and I am confident they will have the skills needed to lead our industry through future challenges and help us achieve more milestones and successes. In 2017, I was approached about being a CYL mentor and I didn’t hesitate to get involved. I saw first-hand the value of the program, as my son was an early graduate of the program and benefited from the experience greatly. Through the program, young people ages 18-35 from across the country are paired with a mentor in a specific area they want to learn more about in the beef industry. It can be anything from policy to sustainable grazing practices to business risk management – the opportunities are endless. Not only does the program attract young beef farmers and ranchers, but it also turns out veterinarians, students, nutritionists, financial advisors, and much more are also interested in getting involved. Every role is an essential piece in the supply chain puzzle, so it’s important we have young leaders positioned for success in all areas. Through CYL, I was paired with Carley Henniger from British Columbia (B.C.), who was interested in growing her knowledge and skills in government advocacy and business development. She was not raised on beef farm but was interested in learning how to become a young rancher and a strong advocate who could help influence future government policies. Carley and I discussed important topics such as pulling together a business plan for a ranch and government advocacy strategies. Through these discussions, I listened to her ideas, encouraged her to follow her aspirations, and when needed, I provided constructive feedback based on my experience. Carley’s interest and passion for the beef industry inspires me. Our paths still cross at

industry events as she works with the B.C. Cattlemen’s Association and has recently become President of the Young Cattlemen’s Council (YCC). The Council is another way for young people to get involved in the industry by serving on the youth subsidiary of the CCA, where the job of the 10 delegates from across Canada is to bring a youth voice to the table. Both YCC and the CYL Program are important ways CCA invests in the next generation. To keep the two straight, I often say the CYL Program focuses on mentorship and sharing our experience with mentees, while YCC is an opportunity for young people to provide us with input on policies that will be shared with policymakers. In December, I had the opportunity to work with Carley again at our CCA’s Directors’ Meeting in Ottawa. It was great to see her leadership in action and her professional growth since her time in the program. We shared another milestone opportunity while in Ottawa. Together, we interviewed Minister Bibeau and discussed the Government’s agriculture priorities and how they would support our industry’s goals. Stay tuned for the video release of this interview! Even with the uncertainties created by the pandemic, the CYL program has been able to pivot and offer valuable development opportunities virtually. Program participants have adapted well to virtual content, and it shows the strength of the industry’s next generation when we have young people who are willing to invest in their professional and personal development in such an uncertain and trying time. The opportunities for these young leaders would not be possible without the generosity of the CYL donors. Funding for the CYL Program is made available through its Foundation Partners Cargill, MNP, McDonald’s Canada and New Holland. The program also receives support from Gold Sponsors Farm Credit Canada, Alltech, RBC Future Launch and Elanco, along with program sponsorship from the Alberta Cattle Feeders’ Association and Kim McConnell. Equally important is the investment of our donors in YCC. The activities and development opportunities for YCC would be limited if it wasn’t for this important support from our Platinum sponsor, New Holland, and CCA’s provincial members. CCA, YCC and the CYL participants are extremely grateful for the support received from these generous partners. Mark your calendars! CYL applications are open until March 31. If you are interested in getting more involved in the Canadian beef industry or know someone who would benefit from the CYL program, please encourage them to apply. To learn more about the program or download the application package, please visit the https:// cattlemensyoungleaders.com and look under “Apply”. Don’t miss your chance to get involved! Data Logic

or most seedstock operations, bull sales drive a lot of the revenue generation and bull development rightly receives a lot of focus. Bulls represent the vast majority of the genetic influence marketed into the commercial industry. Good bull sales are generated from quality cow herds. One of the latest tools provided by the CSA is the ultrasound/ DNA rebate program. This opportunity can be applied in large or small herds to provide new and useful information, better serve your customers and provide an edge for your cowherd. The Replacement Heifer/Yearling Bull Ultrasound/ DNA rebate program provides a rebate to members of $27.50 per head for yearling cattle in contemporary groups that are both carcass ultrasound scanned and have 100K DNA tests completed. What is a Carcass Ultrasound? Carcass ultrasound uses the same technology deployed in the medical field to create images of the internal structure of the animal. In the case of carcass ultrasound the probe is placed on the rib cage and over the rump of the animal to produce an image that can be used to measure outside fat thickness, rump fat thickness, rib-eye muscle area and intramuscular or marbling fat. The information collected on contemporary groups (animals raised together and measured on the same day) can then be included in genetic evaluation to provide EPD for carcass traits. Data must be collected on young animals between 300 and 440 days of age. In order to collect images, breeders can contact a certified technician and book an appointment. What is a 100K DNA Test? A 100K DNA test is performed on an animal in the same way as any other DNA test such as parentage or horn/poll. The breeder orders a 100K option from the CSA and then collects a DNA sample on the animal and sends it to the DNA lab to be interpreted. The results of the test are then reported to the CSA. The difference between a 100K test and other DNA tests such as parentage are that 100K results can be included in the calculation of EPD to add accuracy to the evaluation. When collected on young potential replacements, the DNA can provide information that is equivalent to the animal already having several progeny reported in the system. Why Would I Choose to Pursue This Program? The CSA program provides an opportunity to offset the cost of investing in young seedstock for both carcass merit and increasing the accuracy of the genetic evaluation in your herd. These are powerful tools, particularly when combined.

12

The rate of genetic improvement in a cow herd is defined as: Selection Intensity x Accuracy of Selection x Variation Generation Interval Measuring more traits allows us to put selection pressure on specific animals and increase the selection intensity (how many animals are kept). The increase in accuracy of EPD achieved through genomic data (100K DNA test), allows us to improve the probability that we are keeping the right animals (which may mean we don’t need as many) and by measuring carcass traits using ultrasound on complete contemporary groups we are better able to assess the variation for carcass merit in the herd and make appropriate choices. By concentrating this technology on yearling animals, we are also able to reduce the generation interval and speed up the rate at which we make improvements. In other words, the Ultrasound/DNA program helps to make better, more accurate decisions when selecting young seedstock animals. Because this information is provided on animals that also have a variety of other information provided such as birth and weaning weight, calving ease and calf vigour it allows us to have a very robust set of information on young animals. The DNA also serves to improve the accuracy of the pedigree for genetic evaluation. For those that choose to scan yearling bulls, this means that bull customers may have access to higher accuracy EPD, carcass information and have DNA data that they can use going forward to potentially do things such as sire verify their own commercial calves. Choosing to collect data on heifers provides a huge array of benefits to the cowherd moving forward, such as confirming pedigree, providing a carcass record that follows that cow through her lifetime in the herd, increasing the accuracy of her evaluation for EPD traits beyond carcass, including growth and maternal traits like stability and the 100K test provides a DNA information bank that can be used in future for verifying her calves. Choosing to invest in new technologies is a cost and represents a significant investment in a breeding program. The CSA Ultrasound/DNA program provides a unique opportunity that may help with that process and even empower enhanced genetic selection and marketing for your program. Director

Meet the CSA Directors Byron Johnson

Byron Johnson Alberta Region

It was a few purebred Simmental heifers his son purchased in 2006 that “nudged” Byron Johnson into producing purebred cattle on their east-central Alberta farm. And now, over the past 15 years Johnson Ranching, at Amisk, AB is a mixed farming venture that runs a blended herd of 250 head of purebred Simmental and Charolais cattle, along with annual cropping of about 2,000 acres. While there is plenty to do on the farm to keep Bryon and his wife Bernice and son Wyatt busy, Byron also believes it is important to give back to the industry. After serving on the Alberta Simmental Association board for a number of years, including a term as president, Johnson in 2022 is into the first year of his second term on the Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) board. “The Simmental associations have been very supportive of us over the years,” says Johnson. “And being involved with the associations has taught me a great deal, I have learned lots. I just feel it is important to do my part, and help out the association any way I can.” The Johnson’s are the fourth and fifth generation on the long-time mixed farming operation that was homesteaded by Byron’s great grandfather back in 1905. The farm is located off Highway 13 with Hardisty to the northwest and Provost to the southeast.

14

“We always had beef cattle, although for many years it was a commercial cow-calf operation”, says Johnson, recalling that his dad for many years used Simmental bulls in a crossbreeding program with a Hereford-based cowherd. “I was always interested in the genetics side of things and even when it was a commercial operation I’d put a lot of thought into bull buying.” Son, Wyatt had been involved in 4-H and in 2006 used money he had earned from sales in that program to buy a few Simmental heifers from Dean Davidson of XXX Farms Ltd. at Kitscoty, AB. “I guess having those heifers on the farm was the nudge I needed to get involved in the purebred side of things,” says Byron. “Wyatt bought those heifers, then we bought some more cows and heifers from XXX Farms and things have just grown from there.” As they launched into Simmental cattle, they also about the same time kick started the Charolais by buying 40 head of open Charolais heifers from Dean Davidson as well. As they ventured into purebred cattle, they have always been involved with two breeds — Simmental cattle primarily for the maternal traits and Charolais for the terminal cross-breeding genetics. In 2010 they dispersed the entire commercial herd, to focus on purebred beef production. Today, Johnson Ranching runs a herd of about 250 purebred females that includes about 150 full blood and black Simmental cattle and about 100 head of Charolais cows.

The year kicks off with a busy calving season that begins in January and runs for about 60 days. In March they begin breeding with AI and some embryo transfer work during the first heat cycle, followed with natural bull service. “We aim to have everything bred by May as we then have to start with the annual cropping field work,” says Johnson. The cowherd heads out to summer pasture starting around June 1. Part of the herd will stay on home pasture, while the farm also has a grazing allotment on the nearby CFB Wainwright military land. About two-thirds of the grazing is on tame pasture, while about one-third is native grasses. “We manage the purebred cowherd much the same way as we did the commercial cowherd,” says Johnson. “There is only the three of us looking after the cattle and crops and at times we are understaffed, so the cowherd needs to be able to handle the environment — they need good feet, legs and udders — so they can get out there and travel and produce a good calf.” Calves are weaned in early September. Any calves that aren’t being kept as breeding bulls or replacement heifers are immediately shipped to market. From the two beef breeds, Johnson keeps about 80 bull calves and about 60 heifers that will be put on feed. The cows will remain out on pasture — either grass or swath grazing — until about mid December when they are brought in close to the home yard, and put on full feed just ahead of the start of calving season in January.

About 60 head of the yearling bull calves will be prepared for the ranch’s annual bull sale in Provost in early March (it will be March 8 in 2022), and they also sell a few bulls off the farm through private treaty. From the heifer calves, Johnson will select those needed as replacements for their own herd, while another small group will be sold in early December as bred heifers at the Camrose Country Classic. While all breeds have their features, Johnson has always been impressed with the versatility of the Simmental cattle. “I’m impressed with the maternal traits of the Simmental breed and the breed has produced as good a cow as you’ll find anywhere,” he says. “There is just such diversity. It doesn’t matter what your program is or your marketing needs the breed can produce a cow to fit that program. “ Johnson says the breeding program at Johnson Ranching over the years has focused on producing high quality polled genetics, as well as cattle with good performance. “A lot of our customers are large ranching operations,” he says. “They don’t breed cattle on 50 acre paddocks, they are breeding cattle over a section of land or more. They need cattle with good structure, good feet and legs that can handle the environment and get out there and travel. “Our mission has been to raise functional cattle that are what the industry is demanding.”

Director

Meet the CSA Directors Blair McIntosh Blair McIntosh

Saskatchewan Region While he was born and raised on a southern Ontario dairy farm, it didn’t take Blair McIntosh too long to realize he was more interested in the beef side of the agriculture industry. With money he received from his grandmother on his 13th birthday he bought his first Simmental heifer, not realizing that a few decades later that he and a young family would own a purebred Simmental operation in northwest Saskatchewan. Today, McIntosh his wife Stephanie and two children run about 100 head of purebred Red and Black Simmental cattle on their McIntosh Ranching operation at Maymont, just off the Yellowhead Highway about 90 km northwest of Saskatoon. With a growing family and working along side his in-laws Richard and Audrey Seib, McIntosh says the plans are to hopefully expand the purebred herd but a lot will depend on several factors including what the weather does. “We were running up to 150 head of purebred cattle, but due to the drought in 2021 we cut back to 100 head,” says McIntosh. “We definitely would like to work back to that 150 head, but it will be a gradual increase as we see how things go.” While connecting with the Simmental breed in his early teens was almost an accident, he says over the years his appreciation of the breed continued to grow. “To be honest I don’t believe I knew what a Simmental was in those days,”

16

says McIntosh who later in his farming career served as a director of Saskatchewan Simmental Association for 11 years and then in 2019 became a director of the Canadian Simmental Association. “I know I was more interested in beef than dairy, and someone nearby the farm was raising Simmental cattle.” After buying that first heifer, McIntosh got involved in the local 4-H beef club, eventually bought a few more Simmental cattle for the Ontario farm, and learned what he could about raising and showing beef cattle. “I was always interested in learning more, so I was probably about 17 years old when I made my first trip to Canadian Western Agribition, helping some local Black Angus breeders with showing cattle at Regina,” he says. Even with the 36-hour drive from Ontario, it was a very worthwhile trip getting more exposure to and experience in the beef industry, and getting to meet more people including a gal named Stephanie Seib, who was to become his future wife. She just happened to be showing Charolais cattle at the show. The relationship continued, with travel for both between Ontario and Saskatchewan over the next few years, resulting in McIntosh making a permanent move west in 2001 to help out on the Seib farm at Maymont. He and Stephanie married in 2003. They both worked off farm for a while, eventually moving to her grandfather’s house at Maymont as they began farming full time in 2006. In his move to Saskatchewan in 2001, Blair brought with him the top six females and a herd bull from among the Simmental cattle he had in Ontario, to the farm at Maymont and they gradually increased those numbers over the years. “So in 2006 when we were ready to go full time farming we had about 25 to 30 head of purebred Simmental cows,” says Blair. “We were farming together with Stephanie’s parents so all together we had about 120 cows.”

The McIntosh’s have also been actively involved since 2005 in showing cattle at major events such as the Lloydminster Stockade Roundup, as well as Agribition. While they did raise some full blood Simmentals for a while, they eventually focused on producing purebred Red and Black Simmental cattle as the colour and breed best suited to customer preferences. They eventually built the Simmental herd to about 150 head until the drought of 2021. With a calving season that runs from January until late February, the McIntosh’s are also about that time preparing the previous year’s bull crop for their annual March bull sale in Lloydminster, Sask. In 2022 they will have 25 to 30 yearling bulls on offer at the sale, held in conjunction with two other purebred operations. This March 15 will mark the 23rd annual bull sale featuring cattle from Kuntz Simmental, McIntosh Livestock and SAJ Simmentals on offer at the Lloydminster Exhibition Grounds. Once calving is completed and the annual sale is over, breeding season gets underway usually about April 1. It starts with AI service and embryo transfer performed for the first two heat cycles, followed with cleanup bulls to wrap up breeding before cattle head out to pasture in late May to June 1. The herd is divided with some cattle remaining on pasture at the home farm, and others being moved to a community pasture about 20 km away. The cattle will remain on pasture until calves are weaned in early September. McIntosh applies any culling criteria to

the calf crop a few times between calving and weaning. Any bull calves that aren’t suited for breeding are marketed as steers shortly after weaning. He aims to keep about 30 head of bulls for the March bull sale. Bull calves and heifers are brought home and put on pasture and started on a backgrounding feed ration. In early January the bottom third of heifers are sold into the feeder market. The middle third are sold private treaty as open heifers, while the top third will retained as replacement heifers. They will also select about eight to 10 of the top heifers to be sold at a production sale in the fall. McIntosh says he feels it is important to be involved and support industry associations. “Two things that come to mind with the Simmental association is first the people you meet,” he says. “You couldn’t find a better group of people to know and be involved with. It doesn’t matter where you go, you are welcome. And along with that it is just an excellent breed of cattle. “The breeding program has come a long way over the past 20 years, and the breed has such versatility. It doesn’t matter what you are looking for whether it rate of gain, or calving ease or whatever, there are Simmental cattle that can meet those specifications.” McIntosh says it is important to be involved with any organization or board because “if you don’t provide support and help steer the ship so to speak, there is always a chance that a very valuable organization or service could fold.”

Vet’s Advice

By Roy Lewis, DVM

O

Working With Cows Close To Calving

ver the years producers have encountered many different reasons to run cows through late in pregnancy. While some of these procedures are definitely needed one must always ask the benefit gained versus the stress of running heavily pregnant cows through the chute. Previously when pregnancy checking was done late in pregnancy vitamins A&D and in some cases selenium is given if deficiencies are determined. With proper ration balancing and adequate levels of micro and macro minerals given, nutritionists would tell us most of these needs are met. Deficiencies can occur because of uptake of the minerals or competing elements such as sulphates leading to a copper deficiency as one example. So these nutritional boosts may be necessary in some circumstances. Scours vaccines are often given close to calving depending on the brand of scours vaccines you use. I and other veterinarians have seen over the year’s instances where cows may go down after handling. We must remember that heavily pregnant cows are susceptible to metabolic problems. Remember being heavy, big bellied they potentially could become stuck in some chute systems. With the cows starting to pool lots of calcium in the udder with milk production and colostrum production and the increased exertion downer cows can be the result. In the last month of gestation the fetus is starting to grow rapidly and there is further strain on the pregnant cow. From more strain on the cow’s kidneys from filtering the calf’s blood to being immunosuppressed because cortisol is what initiates the calving process the heavily pregnant cow must be coddled so to speak. It is really good if running the cows through close to calving be ever cognizant of recognizing things such as bad feet, swollen udders with potential mastitis, weakness and low body condition score. Make sure footing is extremely good especially when handling heavily pregnant cows as slipping and tripping is heightened. Good time to practice low stress cattle handling with no prods canes etc being used. One must also keep in mind with heavily pregnant cows they get extremely wide and can get stuck in certain handling systems. There have been instances where we simply can’t process the cows because of their huge size. The worker loading the tub system must be aware of this and sort extremely wide or low statured cows out as some systems are narrower lower down. If any cows do seem weak or staggering it may be wise to have your veterinarian treat the cows and check bloods to see if any or a combination of the macro minerals Calcium Phosphorus or Magnesium are low. Producers may not be bad to have a couple bottles of calcium combination products on hand to give either intraperitoneally or under the skin (if indicated on the label). Your veterinarian may give it intravenously and listen to the heart

22

because if given too fast can cause heart arrhythmias and even death. With downer cows one must keep them well bedded with good footing and give feed and water. Your veterinarian will make sure there are no injuries and that the fetus is alive and doing well. If necessary there are good cow lifters on the market. One in particular called “Upsi Daisy” lifts the cow from around the udder and has a sling/harness for around the front end. This causes no damage when they are lifted as getting a downer cow to the right area and off of cement or hard surfaces is imperative. Watch for other conditions that cause cows to loose condition close to calving. Cows can also be checked out for potentially carrying twins, kidney infections, and peritonitis or in older cows potentially missing or poor teeth. Many causes of thin cows close to calving. Cows going downhill close to calving we must be cognizant they may either abort or give birth to premature calves. Abortion is a bit of a protective mechanism. This is where you and your veterinarian may reach the dilemma of possibly inducing the cow to calve. This has the potential of getting a live calf and taking some of the strain away from the cow with carrying a close to full term fetus. This is very tricky as everyday that goes by brings the cow closer to term but her condition could be deteriorating. It is a difficult decision but if we have breeding dates and can check the viability of the fetus as well as checking to see if the cow has good quality colostrum a decision to induce can be made. A straight sticky mucous in the udder means the cow is too early but if nice sticky yellow thick colostrum she has gotten close enough to natural calving to induce. I use a combination of prostaglandins and dexamethasone. Both of these are prescription drugs and your veterinarian will have a combination that works well for them. Calving should happen thirty to thirty six hours after the shots but as I said it is not an easy decision to make. If too quick premature calves are born and the retained placenta incidence goes up considerably. Elective c-sections are done in extreme cases where the cow’s condition is rapidly deteriorating. This spring provide the individual animal care where necessary and under the guidance of your veterinarian don’t hesitate to use pain killers/anti-inflammatory drugs where necessary especially with harder calving’s or with prolapses or episiotomies and the very rare c sections we get. The speed of recovery from using these NSAIDs can sometimes be just short of tremendous. You will benefit from quicker recoveries and better doing patients. Again calves can also benefit from these NSAIDs on most occasions There are now oral injectable and pour on forms off NSAIDs on the market. Have a great 2022 calving season everyone with vigorous calves and not being sleep deprived ourselves hopefully.

Appuye sure la poteau de cloture

Par Bruce Holmquist Directeur général - Association Simmental du Canada

D

Canadian Simmental Association 2022 Proposed By-law Change At its November meetings the Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) Board of Directors decided that due to overwhelming support from the CSA membership, combined with numerous requests to revisit the 2021 proposed by-law change, that it was prudent to conduct another vote on this amendment in 2022. As a result the CSA is again proposing the amendment to its by-laws that would recognize a 7/8 male as a Purebred Simmental changing the current requirement of 15/16 for a Simmental male to attain Purebred status. This change was initially proposed in 2021 and after several years of discussion by the CSA board as well as its Breed Improvement Committee, combined with many requests from CSA members. Last year’s vote fell just short of the required 2/3 majority with 62 percent of members voting in favor however it is clear that the majority of CSA members want this change. Reasons for this amendment: • To more properly recognize the genetic contribution of 7/8 males at an equal level to 7/8 females which have been recognized as Purebreds since 1970.

• The change of Purebred status will facilitate the adjustment to the CSA upgrade table and recognize progeny born from the mating of a 7/8 Simmental male to a ½ Simmental female as a ¾ blood calf.

• This was originally part of the 2013 by-law and upgrading table changes that received unanimous

support through a CSA membership vote held at its Annual General Meeting. While all the other revisions to the upgrading table were accepted by Agriculture and Agrifood Canada (AAFC), this specific mating outcome was not approved and the CSA is currently required to recognize the calves from this mating as a 1/2 blood animal. A 7/8 Simmental female mated to a ½ blood male is however recognized as a ¾ blood calf with the reasoning given to us that a 7/8 female is recognized as a Purebred while as stated above, a 7/8 male currently is not.

It is important to note that:

• This change will not result in the Canadian Simmental upgrade table being the same as the American

Simmental upgrade table as the American process has some distinct differences, including recognizing Simmental animals at less than ½ blood status.

• These changes will be voted on by active CSA members who are in good standing through a mail-in ballot process in the spring of 2022.

• Support by a 2/3 majority of the vote is still required to move to the next step of sending the revisions to AAFC for final approval from the Federal Minister of Agriculture.

• This change in no way affects the Canadian Simmental Fullblood registry nor does it make any changes to Fullblood status or the calculations within our genetic evaluation.

• Purebred 15/16 status will continue to be calculated and displayed to identify the level of purity, as well as to

facilitate the process of developing a 7/8 Purebred Simmental from a recorded ¾ blood parent. This also addresses the concern of the change affecting export markets to other countries. We are confident that these by-law changes will influence the Simmental breed in Canada in a positive way as we facilitate growth for our members while allowing us to continue the Simmental breed’s contributions to the improvement of the Canadian beef cattle industry.
