CANADIAN HEREFORD ASSOCIATION Report

The cattle market is expected to remain strong for the foreseeable future which has created a sense of optimism within the Canadian cattle industry. Discussions around global trade and impact of tariffs are common. Currently, our CUSMA agreement with the USA is in effect, and we are not seeing any tariffs on genetics, live cattle, or beef trade between countries, but that can change with little or no notice.

The CHA will continue collaborate with international and Canadian stakeholders to ensure our genetics have markets available and our members are able to capitalize on opportunities.

There have been several changes in 2025 regarding our genetic services with Neogen which affect our membership. We continue to work with Neogen to provide accurate, timely, and cost-effective genomic testing.

As of August 1, 2025, we negotiated a reduction in the cost of select genomic tests. At no additional cost, the CHA Standard 100K genomic test now automatically includes the add-on for Delayed Blindness (DB), the Horned-Polled test, and most other genetic conditions (MD remains only available as a stand-alone test).

The CHA Standard test continues to include parentage, and the genotype profile is submitted as part of the PACE evaluation to generate genomically enhanced EPDs on that animal if the member participates in the Total Herd Enrollment (THE) program. This can be a substantial savings for those members requiring tests and having it automatically bundled streamlines the ordering process.

The CHA is collaborating with the Canadian Angus Association and Canadian Charolais Association on the Heifer Select Program. This program is designed to align the seedstock and commercial cattle sectors for the implementation of genetic services and data analytics.

Resulting from the project, commercial cattle producers will be able to purchase genetic tests for their animals that are trained on Canadian cattle data and receive genomic information back.

This information will be available to commercial producers through an online portal that displays their corresponding animal data which will allow them to make breeding decisions based on genomic information.

The strategy is that once commercial cattle producers can measure the genetic merits of their replacement heifers or females already in their herd, they will source bulls based on genetic merits that match their breeding goals and environments increasing their profitability and customer satisfaction. The Hereford data features prominently in the data set and will promote crossbreeding and the F1 Hereford Baldy.

This program includes Commercial Development Specialists who will work directly with commercial cattle producers to train them on recording animal data, collecting DNA samples, inputting data into Hereford X, analyzing the genomic information received and promoting breed programs.

The teams have been hard at work preparing for the Youth Competition at the World Hereford Conference in the USA in October. The team members went through three rounds of selections including submitting a resume, multi-media presentation, and an interview.

The teams are currently participating in intense training sessions on a wide variety of beef industry related topics in preparation for what we can only assume will be some tough competition from Hereford youth from around the world. We anticipate a large delegation of Canadian producers who will be cheering on our youth and taking advantage of networking opportunities with Hereford breeders from around the world.

The newly formed Canadian Hereford Foundation will be hosting the National Select Sale at the Agribition Red Coat Reception. The proceeds from last years sale are going towards supporting the Canadian teams in Youth Competition at the World Hereford Conference in Kansas City.

The proceeds from this year’s sale will continue this initiative and go to a variety of youth development and education activities. The sale catalogue will be available later this fall.

Bonanza will be held in Richmond Quebec from July 2125, 2026. It will serve as the Hereford Junior National and where the CHA will be holding their Annual General Meeting the evening of July 24, 2026. In 2025, Agribition will be the Hereford National show, the Eastern National at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, and the Western National at the Alberta Hereford Showcase in Red Deer.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT BY KAITLYN MCMURPHY

Optimism is building as we enter the fall run with a consecutive year of record calf prices. That same optimistic atmosphere is mirrored within the Saskatchewan Hereford Association as we head into the fall sale and show season with many exciting events and initiatives on the horizon.

Our annual general meeting was held at “Hereford Headquarters” also known as the Atlas Hotel in Regina. New directors Megan Wasden of Mildred, and Lorraine Serhienko of Waldheim, were elected to the board.

Trevor Airriess was elected as Vice President and I was elected President. Sarah Hordos continues as our Administrative Co-ordinator, managing Secretary and Treasurer duties. Thanks to Rob O’Connor who completed 9 dedicated years as a director on the SHA board. Stepping away from the board was Kristina Just and Julie Mortenson.

The contributions to the SHA Board by Kristina, Julie and Rob are greatly appreciated. Lastly, thank you to our past president, James Hordos, who is known for being receptive to new ideas and inclusive of all members. James will remain on the board for one more year which will then conclude his 9-year term.

Our youth have seen tremendous success showcasing their projects at 4-H shows, Beef-a-rama and open shows and we congratulate them on their dedication and hard work. Show results and champions are included at the back of this issue.

The Southeast Hereford Zone hosted their annual field day on August 16th at Lone Pine Cattle Services near Vibank. 114 quality animals were on display with great turnout from spectators. Photos and results from the day are included in this issue.

Once again, a highlight event for the SHA will be our 3rd annual Red Coat Reception on Wednesday November 26th at the Atlas Hotel in Regina.

This premier event will include a catered beef dinner, presentations, silent auctions, the National Select Sale, the grand prize draw for the Red Coat raffle and of course, a great atmosphere to visit and connect with fellow Hereford enthusiasts.

Proceeds from the National Select sale will go directly to The Canadian Hereford Youth Foundation. The Red Coat Raffle offers a $5,000 sale credit to any Hereford sale in Canada with several secondary show and sale credits to be won. Contact any SHA director for supper and raffle tickets.

Have a safe harvest and a quiet weaning. Enjoy the rewards of all your hard work!

SJHA PROFILE Emma Lees

Arcola, SK.

Q: Introduce yourself! What is your name, age and a little about yourself

A: My name is Emma Lees. I am 22 years old. I am currently the CJHA president and a team member on the World Hereford Conference team going to Kansas City in October! I recently graduated university and this was my last year as a Junior member!

Q: How many years have you been a part of the SJHA?

A: I have been apart of the SJHA since I was just a peewee member, becoming more active with the SJHA in my intermediate and senior years.

Q: Are you in 4-H? What club are you a part of?

A: Yes, I was in 4-H from the age of 6. I was apart of the Arcola-Kisbey 4-H Beef Club the entire time I was in 4-H.

Q: What is your favourite thing about 4-H?

A: This was my last year as a junior and I really enjoyed teaching the younger members in the club this year. It was very rewarding to watch them succeed this year at achievement day and our regional.

Q: Have you attended Bonanza or Beef A Rama? What is your favourite memory from these events if you have?

A: I have attended many Bonanzas as well as Beef a Rama’s. My first Bonanza was in Saskatoon, SK in 2011. I exhibited a bred heifer that year as a Peewee member. I have travelled across Canada for Bonanzas mostly every summer. Recently attending my very last Bonanza as a Junior member in Olds, AB where I was fortunate enough to win overall Showman and Reserve Grand Champion Female.

I have attended many Beef a Rama’s at Lone Pine a few years back. 2 years ago we hosted one in Arcola, SK and I helped organize the event. It was a lot of fun and well attended!

My favourite memories from these events were meeting new people across Canada, making new friends and memories. As a family these were our family holidays year after year so it was awesome to travel across Canada with some of our genetics. Flying to PEI for a Bonanza was a very cool experience to see the breeders and farmers out on the East coast. I also really enjoyed working on each animal every year, from the start to the finish it was all awesome and I would go back and do it all again in a heartbeat!

SJHA PROFILE Emma Lees

Arcola, SK.

Q: What do you like to do in your free time? Do you have any hobbies or interests?

A: In my free time I enjoy working on cattle, being outside and being with my family. I enjoy catalogue and ad designing in the fall and spring months! Outdoor walks in the summer as well as looking at cows and calves in pastures!

Q: Are you attending post secondary education? If so- where and what are your plans after school?

A: I attended the University of Saskatchewan and recently graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Human Resources. I want to still stay involved in the agricultural industry as well as my family farms cattle operation in the future.

Q: What is your favourite thing about Hereford cattle? What do you think more people should know about the Hereford breed?

A: My favourite thing about the Hereford breed is the people. The connections from across Canada with Hereford breeders is very strong. The generosity of the breeders allows for junior programs to flourish, like the CJHA programs which continue to evolve over time and junior shows all across Canada. My favourite thing about Hereford cattle is the docility and the maternal instincts the mother cows have. As a group they are reliable and a valuable breeding piece for producers and junior members to show. I think more people should know the importance of the F1 Baldy and crossing Hereford genetics to the specific traits into their herds whether that be longevity, maternal traits, and added marketability. This can enhance herds and profitability throughout the years of breeding Hereford genetics with a cross.

Q: Who is someone in the breed you look up to? What about them is inspiring to you?

A: I look up to my father, Corey Lees, who has taught me everything I know about cattle. Through his example, I’ve learned the value of hard work and dedication, all while he continues to support me by taking me to the junior shows I love. His guidance has helped me grow and develop as a person over the past few years.

Q: You are part of Team Canada for the World Hereford Conference. Tell us about that experience for you so far and what you look forward to the most about your upcoming experience

A: The experience has been amazing so far thanks to the awesome organizers and volunteers putting this together. Lance has been an amazing role model for all of us on the team to keep pushing and learning in order to represent Canada to the best of our ability. Heather and Jamie as have done educational events during meetings for us and to gain more knowledge about specific topics. The training sessions we have every 2 weeks have been very helpful for us to become more cohesive and work together as a team. Some guest speakers have also donated their time to help the teams prepare for competition, which helps us collaborate with different leaders in the agriculture industry. The team mates on both teams have been incredible to work with every meeting! I look forward to spending the week in October with everyone and representing Canada, meeting new people from across the globe in the young breeder’s competition and all of the other Hereford breeders that will be attending the conference.

Commercial Breeder Highlight Hereford R&B Wilson Ranching

My family’s journey in the Hereford business began in 1926, when Alfred and Laura Wilson homesteaded north of Prince Albert and started building their herd of Polled Hereford cattle under the name of Delfar Polled Herefords.

From there, the herd numbers grew under Alfred’s son, Charles Wilson, who continued to run registered Polled Herefords for much of his life, alongside his wife Alfreda and their children. Some standout Polled Hereford sires used during this time included WSF PRL Justa Banner and a home-raised bull, “Smokey”, who we still use in our AI program today.

During this time, my family took part in the Four Aces Polled Hereford sale in Saskatoon along with Jack Hankins, Garry Duncan, and Jim Johnstone. My father, Richard, also showcased the herd at Agribition during this time.

In 2002, Charles and Alfreda, and current operator, Richard, made the decision to begin cross breeding their Polled Hereford genetics with the new breed taking Canada by storm –Black Angus. After a couple of name changes over the years, in 2015, we re-established and now operate as R&B Wilson Ranching Ltd.

Today, the ranch is operated by my parents, Richard and Darlene; my aunt Sharon; my siblings, Blake and Amy; Amy’s partner, Sjoerd van der Weijden; and myself. We currently calve out a total of 400 cattle. Blake and I have even made the return to Agribition, this time in the commercial barn, selling a handful of top-end replacement females from our program.

There were a few reasons my family made the switch into the commercial industry back in 2002, with the main one being BSE. Cattle markets at this time had plummeted, and we knew we had to make some changes if we wanted to stay competitive in the industry. We wanted to take advantage of hybrid vigour through crossbreeding to improve our weaning weights and other economic traits to ensure we were earning as great a profit as possible.

When selecting a breed to cross with, we knew we wanted to stay within the British breeds and didn’t want to give up the traits and maternal qualities of our Polled Herefords that we’d worked decades to build; milk production, udder quality, structure, and docility being some of those key traits.

Our selection preferences reflect those of the buyers’ market and what we know works for our operation. Of course, weaning weight is important to us today, as we are paid by the pound.

However, our preferences have always weighed heavier toward developing a productive mother cow. Each year, we retain 80100 replacement heifers selected for their growth, capacity, and structure. Then we select for udder quality, docility, feet, and offspring productivity as our females mature in our program.

We believe that top-quality females will take care of the weights when it comes time to sell their terminal calves – it’s a strategy that works for us. Of course, we know buyers like a certain look to the calves they pay a premium for when you are crossing Herefords with Black Angus – both in the terminal and replacement calves – and we like the look too. Because of this, we’ve always been quite selective about the Polled Hereford sires we bring into our program to get the baldie and brockle-faced coloring.

In our Hereford sires, we like to see pigmentation around the eyes and testicles, a moderate birthweight, and we avoid a large feather neck if possible. We’ve had great success finding these traits and productive walking herd bulls with longevity from many Saskatchewan Hereford breeders.

We also source Polled Hereford sires for our AI program from various operations across Canada and the United States. Once we get the look that we want in a sire, our breeding strategy is fairly simple: solid black cows get bred back to Hereford, while the reds, or cows with any white on them, get bred to a Black Angus sire.

Unlike most commercial cattle operators, our calving season begins mid-February. We find this time works best for us, not because we enjoy calving in the cold, but because we are busy seeding in the spring.

Our calving window is another reason we have stuck to breeding Hereford-influence cattle, as running them through a barn requires cows that are docile, and ones that can maintain their condition in the cold while producing enough milk for their calf at side. Our terminal steer and heifer calves are sold during the fall run with specific timing depending on pasture conditions and the market. We’ve experienced dry conditions in recent years south of Prince Albert, as has most of the province. Despite conditions, we are reassured that our breeding strategy is working, as our calves haven’t given up any gains despite the lack of moisture.

The Saskatchewan Hereford industry is close to our hearts as it’s where we got our start generations ago, and the breed is one that we will continue to utilize in our program. We have had positive feedback from those we’ve sold females and steers to in the past, with many repeat supporters of our program. We are proud of the herd we have developed over the years using Hereford genetics from close to home, and from far away.

EVENTS & ADVERTISING COMMITTEE REPORT

RED COAT RAFFLE/RECEPTION

The Red Coat Raffle and Red Coat Reception seen another excellent turn out at the Reception and success again with sales of raffle tickets. Raffle tickets were sold beginning at SK Sale weekend and continued through the fall until CWA Sale day. The reception and raffle were both received extrmely well by exhibitors and sponsors. Our reception was held at the Atlas Hotel Ballroom, where we served 200 guests a burger bar with all of the fixings. New in 2024 was the inagural National Select Donation Sale benefitting the Junior teams that will represent Canada at the World Hereford Conference in October 2025. 13 Lots were auctioned off by Chris Poley live at the

Reception and on DLMS. The sale was a resounding success raising just over $20,000 for the teams. Exhibitors enjoyed a low key atmosphere and an opportunity to catch up with fellow breeders outside of the barns. The raffle was extremely well supported by breeders and businesses across the country donating sale and service credits. The Grand Prize $5000 sale credit was won by Wally Pugh of Ontario. The committee wants to thank all who donated lots to the sale and have supported the event in its early years. Planning is well underway for 2025 and we look forward to hosting you all at the Reception on November 26, 2025.

AG IN MOTION

The Ag in Motion committee spent time at our “Better Your Beef” booth at the show again in 2024. Our booth is in an excellent location in the livestock pavilion. HMS Hi-Cliffe had animals on display, as well as a nice booth set up with Hereford signage and advertising. The booth got lots of local traffic, as well as stops from many international visitors.

4-H AND YOUTH REPORT

The Saskatchewan Hereford Association board of Directors recognize the importance of supporting and encouraging the future breeders of our province. In 2024, the youth committee sent 104 gift cards to 4H members exhibiting purebred and Hereford influenced cattle in the 4H program. Additionally, 4H members winning grand or reserve champion animals at the regional level received personalized Hereford jackets acknowledging their outstanding accomplishments. The members receiving jackets were Dakata Van Metre, Ethan

Brooks, Marshall Brooks, Mia Mackie, Chloe Wagner, Kyla Lees, Emma Lees, Joss Pittman, and Hannah Lees. The board also approved sponsorship of the following shows and organizations:

- Yorkton Spring Steer and Heifer show

- Young Ranchmen’s

- Saskatchewan Beef Expo

- Bonanza

- U of S Range Team

- 4H Saskatchewan

To show support for continuing education of our young breeders the board also moved

to increase our Scholarship to two $1,000 scholarships. Through social media and gift card mail-outs the association has been actively engaging the youth in upcoming events and the promotion of the Hereford breed including sharing the promotional videos created by successful scholarship candidates. In total, the Saskatchewan Hereford association invested nearly $10,000 in youth initiatives for the 2024 year and we look forward to supporting our youth in upcoming year

CANADIAN WESTERN AGRIBITION COMMITTEE REPORT

The 2024 CWA Show was judged by Lance Leachman, Maidstone SK. Entries overall were down slightly on the Polled side. Horned entries continued to decline warranting the decision to move to a combined Horned and Polled show in 2024. Bonnie Thompson returned as our Barn Boss and was honored with a Hereford wall print for dedicating 10 years to the Barn Boss role for our breed. Looking ahead to the 2025 show the planning committee is looking forward to another Agribition. The judge for the 2025 Agribition judge

will be Craig Wilgenbusch, Halbrite SK, A block of hotel rooms has been reserved at the Atlas Hotel on south Albert St. and are held until October 10, For the block reservation code information, please contact Sarah.

the magazine including a Jr Member Spotlight, Hereford Life column and an outside industry information article to add some value to each issue. In 2024 we seen a slight decrease in net income for the magazine and the board is actively looking at a review of the publication, and logistics surrounding the publishing and distribution. Respectfully submitted,

province very well! The juniors have also volunteered their time this year at the SE Hereford Zone field day and Agribition throughout the 2024 year. We are currently planning a Beef-A-Rama to be held in conjunction with the Prince Albert Fair. More information on this will come soon. Questions can be directed to Lorraine Serhienko 306260-2321. The CJHA Delegates, Emma and Matthew have been calling the Sask breeders to request their participation in the CJHA projects such as the Calendar and Heifer Lottery Program. They are also looking for those interested in donating a few straws of semen to the Semen Donation Program. Please contact Emma or Matthew to get involved if you wish to.

CANADIAN HEREFORD ASSOCIATION REPORT

The cattle market remains exceptionally strong and has created a sense of optimism for the future of the Canadian cattle industry. The uncertainty around global trade has created a few bumps in the road and we will need to be vigilant in our approach to international markets. Currently, our CUSMA agreement with the USA is in effect, and we are not seeing any tariffs on genetics, live cattle, or beef trade between countries, but that can change with little or no notice. The CHA will continue to work collaboratively with international and Canadian stakeholders to ensure our genetics have markets available and our members are able to capitalize on those opportunities. The 2024 year was positive overall for the finances of the Canadian Hereford Association and the Hereford breed in general. We saw an increase in registrations to 10,014 (9,663 in 2023), transfers were lower at 3,471 (4,357 in 2023) and memberships remained stable again at 822 (812 in 2023). Saskatchewan specifically saw an increase in registrations 3, 214 (2,804 in 2023); a decrease in transfers 1,314 (1,552 in 2023) and stable membership at 164 (164 in 2023). Other factors that contributed to an optimistic outlook for the Association was a positive return on our long-term investments, the office building fully rented for the last half of the year, access to grant funding to offset international marketing, and an increase in CHA Standard DNA testing. As of January 1, 2025 there were several changes that took effect regarding our genetic services. Neogen will store submitted DNA (hair/ TSU) for one year and then return those samples to the CHA who will continue to store them for a limited time, depending on type of sample. Hair samples submitted after January 1, 2025 will be stored for a total of five years, before being discarded. Samples submitted before that date will be subject to different policy and stored for a longer period, approximately 10 years, as in many cases there was not an opportunity to collect DNA on those animals. The CHA will store the Allflex or other TSU brand samples for a total of two years from the date of submission, due to required cost and infrastructure of required freezers. Retrieval of samples stored at the CHA office will be assessed a fee of $20 per sample, which covers postage and other associated costs in sending them back to Neogen. Currently, samples still located at Neogen are not subject to retrieval costs, but which is subject to change. Samples submitted in hair format will be assessed an additional $5.00 charge by Neogen, which will be applied to your CHA account. Allflex TSU’s can be purchased direct from the Neogen website in packs of 10 or 100. We are encouraging breeders to maintain an on-farm storage system for animal DNA. Hair samples should be stored in a paper envelope and clearly labelled with relevant animal identification information, in a dry cool space. There are additional benefits to storing on-farm as we have been able to resolve multiple parentage issues in cases where breeders had hair stored on-farm. We are recommending sending the TSU to Neogen and storing a hair sample on-farm. To avoid the additional fee for submitting DNA in hair format to Neogen, we are recommending that DNA samples are submitted using the Allflex TSU which will avoid this fee and be placed in the ‘fast lane’ at Neogen. The TSU applicators and testing units can be purchased directly from Neogen. The cost of the hair charge is more than the cost of a TSU.

More information will be available on the CHA website as it comes available or by contacting any of the CHA Member Service Team. The CHA will be launching two new programs later this year. Hereford X is the new on-farm herd management program and Hereford 365 which is the new official registry database. The current system that CHA uses along with American Hereford Association and others is outdated and is limiting what we can offer our members for even simple tasks. There will be no cost to members to use Hereford 365 as that is covered in the cost of your membership but there will be an additional cost for the optional Hereford X program. Pricing and features are available on the CHA website, but feel free to call the office for more information or to get on the list to be signed up when available. This is the first phase of a revamped registry and data collection process for the CHA as we move the Hereford breed forward by providing new digital tools for breeders as a critical component of the Better Your Beef Strategy. The CHA is collaborating with the Canadian Angus Association and Canadian Charolais Association on the Heifer Select Project. This project is designed to align the seedstock and commercial cattle sectors for the implementation of genetic services. Resulting from the project, commercial cattle producers will be able to purchase genetic tests that are trained on Canadian cattle data and receive genomic information back, similar to our current PACE evaluation EPDs. The strategy is that once commercial cattle producers can measure the genetic merits of their replacement heifers that they will in turn source higher quality bulls to improve their herds. The Hereford data features prominently in the data set and will promote crossbreeding and the F1 Hereford Baldy. This project will include a Commercial Development Specialist who will work directly with commercial cattle producers to train them on recording animal data, collecting DNA samples, inputting data into Hereford X, analyzing the genomic information received and promoting breed programs. The teams have been selected for the Youth Competition at the World Hereford Conference in the USA this fall. The competitors underwent three rounds of selections including submitting a resume, multi-media presentation, and an interview. In total ten judges, who are leaders in Canadian Agriculture, were challenged to select the best of the best that will represent Canada this fall. We anticipate a large delegation of Canadian producers who will be cheering on our youth and taking advantage of networking opportunities with Hereford breeders from around the world. We want to thank sponsors, buyers, and those who contributed to make the National Select fundraiser sale at Agribition a success. Proceeds from that sale will go to supporting our youth at the WHC. More information is available on the American Hereford Website regarding the event. This year Bonanza will be held in Olds AB from July 21-25, 2025 and serve as the Hereford Junior National. The CHA will be holding their Annual General Meeting the evening of July 24, 2025 and welcome all our members to attend as there will be updates on new Hereford initiatives and a status report on the Better Your Beef Strategy. In 2025, Agribition will be the Hereford National show with the Eastern National at the Royal Winter Fair and the Western National at the Alberta Hereford Showcase.
