How to Tattoo an Animal

Tattoo letters are a unique combination of three (3) or four (4) letters allotted to a person by the National Breed Association for that person’s exclusive use in identifying, tattooing, and registering animals with their association.

All animals must be identified with an ear tattoo in order to be eligible for registration in the Canadian Simmental Association books as follows:

• All calves born in Canada must be identified by an ear tattoo before the animal is six (6) Months of age

• All imported animals must be identified by an ear tattoo using the Canadian owners tattoo letters or such other letters as may be required by the association.

• An ear tattoo is a unique combination of tattoo letters, followed by a number of up to 4 digits to identify the animal, followed by a year letter. The first number in a letter cannot be a zero (0).

• No two (2) animals, regardless of sex, may have the same ear tattoo within a 22-year cycle of the year letters.

• The letters I, O, Q, and V are not used.

Hints on a successful tattooing

• As proper identification of animals is the basis for the purebred industry, this is the most important factor a breeder should consider. Animals can be turned away from shows, sales, and for export purposes because of improper, indistinct, or just plain erroneous tattoos. Placing a tattoo on an animal should be a simple matter, but it seems it causes many breeders problems mainly because not enough care is taken at the time the tattoo is applied. Read these tips over, inspect your cattle tattoos when you have a moment, evaluate your present technique, and see if you can improve on your own tattooing method.

• Tools of the trade: tattoo pliers, small brush (a toothbrush works well) for rubbing paste into the tattoo letters, rag for cleaning ears, alcohol as solvent to wet rag to remove wax, tube of paste ink. Don’t store the tattoo letters in a pile at the bottom of a container, the points will become bent or dull. Clean, sharp, straight needles make for good tattoos.

• Applying the tattoo: select a spot between the ribs, well into the ear and well away from the hairy edges of the ear. Press firmly and release, pressing the ear away from the pliers if necessary to avoid tearing the skin. Note that if the punctures made are indistinct or ripped, leave it to heal for a week and try again. Avoid hitting a rib, as this causes excess bleeding and will result in one side of the puncture being too shallow and the other side too deep, making a poor tattoo. N.B. Extremely important to thoroughly clean the dirt and wax from the ear.

• Apply the ink to the ear. There are many types of ink, but paste is recommended. Colors vary, but green works best.

• Don’t put the paste directly on the tattoo needles, work the paste into the punctures with the brush. If any blood appears, apply more paste, and rub it in until the bleeding stops. If the tattoo is a good one, the excess ink may be removed immediately, but usually it is left on to help minimize bleeding.

• Don’t place tattoos in the hairy edges. Remember when doing calves, place the tattoo well into the ear. As the calf grows, the hairy edge works into the ear.

• A good tattoo, well into the ear, away from the hairy outer edges and plainly visible is the desired result. Place the breeder letters in the top, running between the first and second ribs.

• The use of a flashlight speeds up the reading of tattoos, but well placed, distinct tattoos should require no aid to read them. Don’t confuse 6s and 9s. Once you’ve placed the tattoos in the pliers, check on a piece of cardboard before placing in the ear.

From The

Gatepost

Are We Leaving Money on the Table

What a difference a year can make! When I wrote the December 2021 Gatepost, we had just experienced a year of drought that for much of Canada resulted in extreme feed shortages which caused many producers to purchase feed supplies at severely inflated prices. When cow-calf producers could find it, that feed often had considerable trucking costs attached due to the distance and other related expenses required to get it home.

While there were still some dry areas throughout the 2022 growing season, much of Canada did receive adequate rainfall, and prices for “beef quality” hay have since fallen from thirteen cents per pound or higher to around four to six cents per pound. Some hay producers are not yet used to that adjustment and aren’t prepared to lower their prices and adjust to the new reality, however demand within marketplace will decide as to whether we will see a price increase towards spring which might still meet their asks. Personally, I don’t think it will happen however with today’s increased production costs neither cattle nor forage producers can afford to leave money on the table.

Another significant difference between this year and last is the increase in feeder calf prices. Alot of producers received higher prices for their calves in the fall of 2022. There was finally reason to smile for those who have persevered through the depressed markets of the last few years. The questions many folks are asking is whether it is enough now, some producers would quickly say no but there are many who also saw prices of $1800 and higher for their heavier weight calves. In most cases this was due to earlier calving dates and using power and performance Simmental bulls.

Many of us agree that there is a need for sustainability as it relates to agriculture, and of the Canadian beef production chain. The social lens of public acceptance, though often misguided, is strong and in fact we often hear folks, including some within the beef industry speak of sustainability of the environment as it relates to societal pressure regarding climate and animal welfare, however we also

need to put on the lens of sustainability as to how it relates to profitability of producers along the entire beef value chain? We certainly need more than three profitable years out of ten. No other business can survive without profitability, and it shouldn’t be considered a “dirty word” by anyone.

Many things are out of our control, however there are ways we can improve our chances of profitability and that’s by not leaving money on the table. While I know many top-notch beef producers that do know their cost of production and maximize their management and marketing to an extremely high standard, there are still some that are price takers that do not maximize their production practices. Are you weaning a 100% calf crop, what is your open female rate and what can be done to improve those ratios. We can no longer count on doing the way that Dad and Grandpa did it as being the best way today and that begins by knowing the exact costs of production associated to our individual operations. This winter would be a good time to sit down and establish the goals for the coming year and develop a sound marketing plan that also includes making the necessary changes based on improving this year’s decisions and outcomes. Look at what bulls worked, and which ones didn’t. Salvage value on those old gents has never been better and it is a great time to upgrade your bull battery! One thing is for certain, if you aren’t including Simmental genetics in your breeding program you are leaving money on the table!

2022 was a better year for all cow-calf producers and we can’t control the weather or markets for 2023 but let’s find things that we can improve on and that we can control.

On behalf of everyone at the CSA and Simmental Country, I would like to wish everyone the best of luck and good weather with your upcoming November and December sales as well as wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and prosperous 2023.

Breed IMPROVEMENT

A Free Gift – Hybrid Vigour and the Season of Giving

Given that December is the season of giving, I thought it might be useful to reflect on one of the greatest gifts in the beef industry. The gift I am speaking of is heterosis or hybrid vigour and Simmental is a key component of that.

What is Hybrid Vigour?

A simple definition of hybrid vigour is that progeny of diverse parents will outperform the average of those parents. The really important part of this is that alot of that outperformance occurs in traits that are relatively lowly heritable. In other words, we can select cattle for traits such as growth or carcass and have a fairly significant impact on the performance of progeny. These are moderately to highly heritable traits. Traits such as fertility are more difficult to select for and have a relatively low heritability. Heterosis or hybrid vigour will have an outsized impact on these traits. If we think about the importance of fertility to profitability in a traditional system, fertility is roughly 5 times more important than growth and 10 times more important than carcass. From this lens we can hopefully see that a tool to provide a major boost to fertility is a tremendous benefit.

How Big is the Gift?

To give some perspective, let’s look at the impact of crossbreeding. The following table shows the impact of having a crossbred calf, which creates improvements in growth and calf survival. The potential for an immediate impact of Simmental genetics on a commercial herd are fairly apparent when looking at the immediate/direct improvements.

Table

Trait

1. Impact of Direct Heterosis (Crossbred Calf)

Difference % Heterosis

Calving Rate 3.2 4.4

Survival to Weaning 1.4 1.9

Birth Weight 1.7 2.4

Weaning Weight 16.33.9 ADG 0.082.6

Yearling Weight 29.1 3.8

Cundiff and Gregory 1999

Where the rubber really hits the road, and Simmental can potentially make its’ biggest impact due to maternal strengths is with the crossbred cow. The impact of a crossbred cow equates to a cow producing one more calf in her lifetime when compared to a straightbred cow.

Table 2. Impact of Maternal Heterosis (Crossbred Cow)

Trait

Difference % Heterosis

Calving Rate 3.5 3.7 Survival to Weaning 0.81.5 Birth Weight 1.61.8 Weaning Weight 18.0 3.9 Longevity 1.3616.2 Cow Lifetime Production Number of Calves 0.97 17.0 Cumulative WW 600 25.3t Cundiff and Gregory 1999

We may not often quantify this but adding on average one extra calf equates to reducing replacement rate in the commercial cow herd. If the average replacement rate is in a commercial herd using straightbred cows is 20%, simply implementing a planned crossbreeding system would reduce that by roughly 4%. That means on 100 cows there would be 4 more salable calves as you would have fewer replacements.

To give it a simplified value, a crossbred cow bred to a 3rd breed of bull has roughly a 23% advantage over a straightbred cow. That is a significant value.

If Purebreds are not the answer, then where does Simmental fit? Certainly, Simmental breeders are rightfully proud of the many strengths that the Simmental breed brings to the table. It is also important to recognize that other breeds bring strengths that may be complementary to Simmental cattle and that in a planned crossbreeding system the strengths of all contributing breeds are magnified. Purebred or Fullblood Simmental are essential to this process and will be part of many commercial operations breeding programs.

The important part of the previous paragraph is “Planned Crossbreeding” system. This is reflected in the decisions by Simmental breeders to breed quality cattle and to make decisions for the breed to allow documentation of SimAngus and other SimCross genetics. These cattle allow some commercial operations to simplify their crossbreeding systems and still take advantage of the benefits of a planned crossbreeding program.

Why would we want to encourage crossbreeding? I am often reminded of the “Breed ‘em all Simmental” slogan, and I appreciate the sentiment as the breed has a lot to offer in terms of performance and maternal merit. I think we would all agree that successful customers are repeat customers and helping our customers be successful ensures our success. The benefits of crossbreeding are too large to ignore and are essential to our customers success. The contribution and benefits to using Simmental within that system are also impossible to ignore.

Perhaps a better slogan knowing that crossbreeding is so vital to success of the commercial industry is “Some Simmental in ‘em all”, unless they aren’t Simmental to start with and then fire away.

Tableau 1.

Vets ADVICE

Inducing Cows Safely

With calving for some only a few months away this may be a timely topic. There comes a time in cow calf production to induce cows to calve for a number of reasons. This may be because there is an abnormal pregnancy, the cow has a life-threatening condition, pregnancy has gone on too long leading to health issues. There are other specific reasons where management of the calving season may warrant inducing cows. In all the cases careful thought and examination must go into the final decision. The best outcome must be considered by yourself and your veterinarian as every case is unique and the ultimate goal is to have both the cow and calf survive.

If very close to the end of gestation, there are a few protocols to have a normal induction. The use of prostaglandins and dexamethasone in combination will give induction generally within 30-36 hours. I like to use the regular dose of prostaglandin ( 2cc of estrumate or equivalent product) and about 25 mg of dexamethasone but again your vet should have a formula they like for these prescription products. Everyone of these cases where induction has been contemplated an emergency c-section has been contemplated as well. One is often balancing the time taken to induce and the determined gestational length with the odds of both the calf’s and dam’s survival. Sometimes the dam is in grave health and our main goal is trying to salvage the calf and other times the pregnancy is abnormal, so one is trying to remove the calf to save the cow.

Conditions where I have induced cows or heard other veterinarians induce cows with success are fetal anasarca (collection of fluid in the fetus), hydrops (abnormal amount of fluid accumulation in the uterus making it life threatening), severe peritonitis, heart failure from hardware disease, severe pyelonephritis (kidney infection) and even severe pneumonia.

Cases where cows go down close to calving perhaps from getting too thin carrying twins are another example where inducing a bit early may get rid of the weight of the calves and uterine fluids allowing the cow to get up again. Downers pose their own set of management headaches. They must be on a soft well bedded area given feed and water. There are better ways to lift and transport them to a more suitable location. Management of downers is a whole other topic to discuss and as far as induction goes may be a day by day collective decision as to if, when and how induction will happen.

Viability and closeness to due date for the calf’s sake is always a big decision. Do we have a breeding date (AI date or visualized breeding) how

is udder fill and what does your veterinarian think on palpation? These are all very subjective calls and even if a breeding date is known the breeds or breed classes have quite a range and variation between them in gestational length. With in vitro fertilization gestation seems to be quite variable as well. Inducing any earlier than two weeks ahead and the calf is usually not viable.

It is much easier if one is simply bringing on cows a bit earlier to tighten the end of the breeding season or for other management reasons an induction is contemplated. Here it is absolutely imperative to check the cow has good quality colostrum. The thick yellow sticky colostrum in all four teats indicates the cow/heifer is close enough to induce. If the colostrum looks like mucous it is still too early and you must wait. If inducing, you know they should calve within about the 30-36-hour window, but they may have been going to calve within the next few hours naturally so watch them closely. In other words, the induction process was too late as calving was occurring naturally. Be warned the sick, toxic, thin etc cows usually do not produce much milk so udder fill is not appropriate

With all inductions observe them closely and again the ultimate goal is to save cow and calf. One must keep in mind the calf in utero is sort of mimicking what is going on with the cow. If she is short of breath because of pneumonia the calf’s blood is not oxygenated normally, if she is toxic from bad mastitis or peritonitis the calf will be suppressed. There is a big risk and reward with inducing. I have seen on some occasions where both cow and calf are lost but I have also seen live twins delivered from a downer cow and she subsequently got up so all three were saved. One never knows until you try.

If the cow is lost make sure and do a BSE test as the autopsy may give more of a clue as to the diagnosis. Usually these are individual animal problems but sometimes as in the cases of hardware disease (heart failure), or thin from lack of nutrition herd issues may be detected. With inducing cows for management reasons, they should always be very close to their due date and have good quality colostrum. They should also not retain their placentas if done properly as we are only talking about bringing them on a few days early. Here’s hoping calving goes well and we don’t run into many cows we need to induce. If there is the need make sure and have your herd veterinarian help determine the most appropriate time unless you have lots of experience previously.

World Simmental Fleckvieh congress Austria 2022

August 30 - September 4

From August 30 to September 4, 2022, I had the pleasure of attending the World Simmental Fleckvieh Congress in Austria. Over 200 delegates from 31 countries met in Vienna, and together we spent several days attending technical lectures, visiting cultural attractions, touring dairy and beef operations, and watching an outstanding national show and sale in Friestadt.

The conference began in Vienna with the World Simmental Fleckvieh Federation board meeting, which elected the incoming President, Sebastian Aurenig from Austria and Peter Wenn from Australia as President elect. Over the course of the event, I got to know Peter and the Australian delegation, and I learned that he is a passionate Simmental breeder. He has been attending the World Congress for many years, and just this past year he received the WSFF Golden Book Award for his service to Simmental and the world body.

In the evening the entire delegation attended elaborate opening ceremonies to welcome delegates from each country, and I, along with CSA General Manager Bruce Holmquist were the Canadian representatives. Bruce is a past WSFF president as well as a current board member, and like Peter, has been attending the congress for decades; my experience was definitely enhanced because he graciously introduced me to many delegates from across the world.

The theme of the conference was Fleckvieh Changes, and throughout the event organizers highlighted the advantages of Simmental cattle in regards to economy and ecology. Like many other countries around the world, Austrian Simmental breeders are striving to tell their sustainability story, all while under mounting pressures from the environmentalist and animal welfare movements. Several lectures explored genomics testing, which has been championed by their national association and breeders to help them improve their cowherd, while at the same time minimizing their CO2 footprint. The Austrians emphasized that the dual-purpose Simmental Fleckvieh cow meets the demands of balanced milk and meat production, and explained how modern breeding is working towards measuring sustainability traits; primarily fitness, health, and longevity. The international community, much like ourselves, are grappling with the difficult questions of what truly needs to be measured, what advances in technology can be employed to most accurately do this, and then, perhaps most importantly,

how to clearly quantify and communicate that progress has been made. Suggested avenues for exploration were to investigate emerging evaluation models that offer opportunities for many new trait areas such as animal welfare, methane emissions, and feed efficiency. Overall, the lectures were quite technical in nature, but through informal conversations with other delegates afterwards, I was able to gain a better understanding of where Canada’s practices fit internationally.

After a full morning of presentations, the wrap-up keynote presentation was given by Bruce Holmquist about how Beef Simmental/Fleckvieh is playing a very large part in the important role of feeding the world. We then turned our focus to touring several beef and dairy operations, as well as two large insemination stations, across Upper Austria. There were extensive touring options, and we often broke into sub groups tailored to our interests. The first full group excursion was to the teaching and experimental farm of LFS Pyhra. They share a property with the breeding farm of Perschlingtalmilch, which is a cooperative farm of three breeders with over 360 Fleckvieh cows. The female offspring at this farm are 100% genotyped and selected based on their results. One thing that stood out at this operation was the moderate frame and unbelievably good udder quality of the cows - they were basically perfect!

The next day delegates broke into sub groups, and we chose to visit the beef farm of the Fruehwald family, who directly market their meat products to local consumers. I was surprised to learn that most beef cattle in Upper Austria are housed indoors year-round, with only a small paddock outside for seasonal use. When I inquired about this, I was told that the land is so valuable for grain and forage crops, that it was not economical to use it for grazing. However, in Lower Austria and the Alps Regions, smaller herds of 25-50 Simmentals are the norm, and they are commonly grazed on non-arable land.

We continued on to the crowd favorite amongst beef producers, Roch Farms, which raise approximately 320 Fleckvieh bulls for beef. The cattle are kept on straw all year and the produced manure is refined into electricity and heat in the farm’s own biogas plant. The beef fattening farms are referred to as bull farms, not feedlots, and I was amazed to learn that castrating males is not practiced in Austria and several other European countries. I was very curious about this practice, and found out that for one, the culinary tastes of many Europeans prefer leaner cuts of beef that are often slow roasted, smoked, or boiled. And secondly, there is pressure from animal rights groups that castration is an unnecessary and stressful practice. Needless to say, the Canadian style, marbled, juicy steak was definitely a foreign concept! Luckily though, at this farm delicious cuts of beef, raised on site and certified through the AMA seal of approval program designed by Agrarmarkt Austria, were prepared to what we thought was perfection, and then served to guests by professional chefs. The American and Australian delegates, along with us Canadians, were definitely the most enthusiastic taste-testers!

With much to see, tours continued the following day to two insemination centers: Genostar, where 160 bulls are kept and Oö Besamungsstation GmbH, which specializes in polled sires. In general, horned genetics have been dominant, but in recent years there has been growing demand for polled genetics.

20

We finished the day by visiting the beautiful Kreil family farm, where exclusively Fleckvieh Simmental beef is raised, slaughtered, and processed on farm, then marketed directly to consumers through an on-site store. At this farm I was impressed by the beauty of the property and that the animals were strictly beef and not dual purpose. The phenotype of breeding stock was more in line with Canadian standards, but again due to land constraints, cattle were primarily housed indoors year-round. Also, when we toured their abattoir facilities, they had a bull carcass hanging that was visibly much leaner than what Canadian standards and consumers would desire.

Interestingly, one of the most enjoyable parts of the entire Congress were the bus rides. We spent several hours each day traveling to farms and to the dinners and evening entertainment, and every time you hopped back on the bus, you had the opportunity to sit with someone new. Sometimes we would engage in pleasant conversation and most times we would end up talking about the use of Simmental cattle in our respective countries and operations. Also, this time gave me the opportunity to ask questions about what we had just seen or learned, and through discussion, I was often able to deepen my understanding of new concepts and practices.

In addition to the lectures and farm tours, Austria made a remarkable effort to show delegates the cultural delights of their country. While in Vienna, participants toured the Spanish Riding School with world class Lipizzaner horses, were treated to a traditional Austrian evening at “Fuhrgassl-Huber’’, a wine tavern with local delicacies, and attended a gala dinner in the inner courtyard of the Vienna City Hall. The closing ceremonies were held aboard the Regina Danubia, a cruise boat that toured guests along the Danube River in the city of Linz. It was easily the most luxurious cattle banquet that I have ever attended! At this event delegates from many nations exchanged gifts with the host country in a formal ceremony. Canadian Simmental Association GM, Bruce Holmquist gifted the Austrian Simmental Association an iconic Bernie Brown prairie scene that showcases Simmental cattle in Western Canada.

intensified and entertainers began throwing knives around a very still president. I’ve never seen anything quite like that before!

On the day of the show, thousands of people gathered to eat Austrian Simmental Fleckvieh beef, smoked to perfection, in an Oktoberfest style atmosphere complete with brass brands and lederhosen. The event concluded with National champions being selected before an extensive crowd and enthusiastic exhibitors.

Overall, the congress offered an exceptional program and gave me much to think about and dissect long after the event concluded. I was left with a significant lasting impression of the diversity and adaptability of the Simmental breed. From the Simmental infused bos indicus cattle of the tropical climates, to the dual purpose Fleckvieh cattle increasingly used across the globe, to our North American style of production using Simmental genetics, it became clear that Simmental is securely positioned as a breed that can truly feed the world. It is also apparent that Canada is viewed as a leader in the international Simmental community. Through casual conversations with delegates from all over the world, one thing was illuminated - they are interested in what Canada is doing and how we are doing it. And more often than not, even though the use of the breed and the goals we are working towards are different, the desire to improve and overcome the obstacles in our paths are similar.

Looking forward to 2024, the World Simmental Congress will be held in Mexico in the early Spring, and my plan is to be there! So, why should other Canadian producers attend? Firstly, in my opinion, there is no other event that will give you the singular opportunity to network within a progressive international community, learn from world leading experts, explore the diversity of the Simmental breed, all while enjoying travel and taking in the culture of a different country. The congress will challenge you to rethink your methods and goals, will offer you a diverse outlook on agriculture, and if nothing else will encourage you to broaden your own perspective. You will return home more knowledgeable, with new friends and contacts, and will be left with a renewed sense of energy and purpose. The positive spirit and ambition of fellow delegates is inspiring and infectious, and will infuse you with the desire to grow both professionally and personally, and to book your next trip to the Congress in two years time! As philosophical writer and thinker Seneca says, “Travel and change of place impart new vigor to the mind.” Hope to see you in Mexico in 2024, amigos!

The Congress concluded in Friestadt where crowds congregated to watch the FleckScore - World Cup, offspring show, breeding presentations, young breeder competition, national show, elite auction of top Fleckvieh genetics from all over Austria, and they even threw in some juggling and knife throwing entertainment. Much to the crowd’s amusement, the president of the Austrian Simmental Association, Sebastian Auernig, was called to the center of the show ring. The lights were shut off and a neon ring of color illuminated a circle in the middle of the coliseum. The light show and music

Conversations about the impacts of climate change and the environment are happening all around us, in Canada and in every region of the world. We know that weather patterns have become more unpredictable – we live it every day. It is critical that Canadian cattle ranchers and farmers are part of these conversations to share our perspectives, experiences, and leadership when it comes to environmental and economic sustainability.

As primary producers, we are entrusted to care for the land and our animals. We are continually evolving our practices to do better with the goal of leaving the land in better condition for the generations after us.

Even with all of these efforts, Mother Nature’s fury can challenge us in devastating and unexpected ways, and these impacts have been felt by cattle producers across the country in recent years. As an industry, we continue to demonstrate Canada’s steadfast commitment to producing the world’s best beef using sustainable practices and our resiliency to overcome the impacts of extreme weather conditions such as drought, flooding, wildfires, and hurricanes. With the devastating impacts of Hurricane Fiona on the cattle producers in Atlantic Canada, we will continue to work closely with our provincial members to communicate what federal support is needed in the months ahead.

With the fall session of Parliament now in full swing, we are taking every opportunity to talk about the environmental benefits of raising cattle in Canada and the impacts of weather-related challenges facing primary producers, which are often difficult to plan for.

On September 23, 2022, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) released Faster and Further: Canada’s Methane Strategy. The Strategy outlined the Government of Canada’s plan to reduce domestic methane emissions by more than 35 per cent by 2030, compared to 2020 levels. It was not a surprise for us to see the expectation of the agriculture sector to reduce methane emissions by 1 per cent from 2020 levels, as this was previously announced in the Government of Canada’s Emissions Reduction Plan.

Upon further review of the Strategy, we were pleasantly surprised to see recognition of the work undertaken under Canada’s National Beef Strategy and our ambitious 2030 goals, which includes a target of reducing the greenhouse gases (GHG) emission intensity of cattle production in Canada by 33 per cent by 2030.

These 2030 goals put Canada’s beef industry on track to meet the Government of Canada’s domestic methane emissions reduction goal. We have also recently released a short video where Dr. Karen Beauchemin explains the natural cycle of methane produced by cattle.

Videos such as this will be used to help raise awareness with Parliamentarians, their staff, and department officials.

It’s very positive to see the impact of sharing our sustainability story with Parliamentarians and department officials – we are slowly moving the needle. We will continue to share our commitment to raising cattle using sustainable practices and highlight the progress that we are making on the 2030 goals.

The next step is for the Government of Canada to launch a consultation on how to achieve these expectations, as part of their Green Agriculture Plan. CCA will be actively engaged in this process and work with our industry partners to feed into the consultation. We will also continue to advocate and build upon the Strategy’s themes which include beef’s holistic environmental benefits, including building biodiversity and providing the majority of wildlife habitat on food producing land.

But our participation in these conversations cannot be limited to the ones happening within our borders. While policy conversations happening on the global stage often feel far removed from what’s happening dayto-day on Canadian cattle ranches and farms, experience has shown us that these conservations foreshadow domestic regulations to come. A good example is the discussions that happened 30 years ago at the Earth Summit hosted by the United Nations (UN) in Rio de Janeiro, which highlighted the urgency of climate change. Now, climate change regulations are a key consideration at all levels of government, and this is a very active file for us.

This fall we are participating in global conversations that are happening including:

• The Private Sector Mechanism held in early October, hosted in Rome, Italy, where two youth leaders took part in the UN Committee on Food Security.

• The Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock (GASL) 12th MultiStakeholder Partnership Meeting in Dublin, Ireland held in early October.

• Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP 27) on climate change solutions to be held in Egypt in November.

• Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the UN CBB (COP 15) on biodiversity, hosted by China in Montreal in early December.

The decisions get made whether we are there or not. We are proud of the role working grazing landscapes play in carbon sequestration and biodiversity. We also enjoy telling of the nutritional benefits of the beef we produce. We need to share this story to ensure that an accurate perspective of sustainable beef production in Canada is considered in these important policy discussions.

The world needs more Canadian beef.

U.S. Beef Industry Reduces Carbon Emissions through Improved Genetic Selection

Crowley gives positive outlook on carbon emissions reduction in the U.S. beef industry.

“General genetic improvement in the North American beef herd is doing a good job of improving emissions intensity. Improving profitability and production efficiency through genetic selection is doing a good job for the carbon footprint of beef,” explained Dr. John Crowley, AbacusBio Ltd. Crowley was a featured speaker during the 2022 Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) Symposium June 2 in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Mitigating greenhouse gas emissions

Improvement of feed efficiency, fertility, animal health, mature liveweight and reducing age of harvest, can be accomplished through breeding and genetics; all traits which hold a lot of promise in reducing the greenhouse gas footprint of beef.

“Each trait has low to mid potential for mitigating emissions alone, but cumulatively, you’re getting towards a medium or high potential for mitigating greenhouse gases through genetics and improving each specific trait,” Crowley said.

Policy drives emission reduction

Policy will be a major driver of the reduction of greenhouse gases. However, consumers will drive most of this impact. Many beef packers are working to create frameworks to source verified greenhouse gas efficient animals. Improving the greenhouse gas level of your animals, can act as a point of difference between producers. Reducing emissions of your animals may allow producers to receive a premium for their low greenhouse gas animals.

“As a genetics-exporting nation, a lot of different countries are going to be looking at your genetics and seeing what metrics and genetics you have on your animals for greenhouse gases,” Crowley explained.

The selection objective

“When we talk about selection objectives, the conundrum we come up against is what do we want to do at the end of the day. Do we want to reduce gross emissions? Do we want to improve emissions intensity,” Crowley asked.

Emissions intensity is emissions per kilo of product or carcass. Gross reduction is concerned with the total amount of carbon coming from a system. Reductions in gross emissions will require a producer to reduce animal size, numbers of days on feed, and result in lower kilos of carcass produced per year.

“The conundrum is policy may want to reduce gross emissions. If in North America, where emissions intensity values for beef production are good,” he added “this policy is put in place, requiring a focus of gross emission will result in carbon leakage. That is, the reduction of beef production in this part of the world and will require it to be supplemented from another part of the world. Global demand for beef isn’t going anywhere and other parts of the world reduce carbon less efficiently than here.”

Emissions intensity should be the focus and form your selection objective to ultimately reduce the carbon emissions per kilo of beef.
