From The

Gatepost By Bruce Holmquist General Manager, Canadian Simmental Association

Canadian Simmental Association 2022 Convention Heading into the summer of 2022, much of Canada is enjoying very favorable growing conditions as compared to the last two years and especially following the widespread drought of 2021. Feed supplies should be much improved and haying has begun in many areas. Though it is never perfect in all parts of Canada, Mother Nature has shown us how resilient she can be and has given rain to many regions as producers hope to replenish their feed supplies. Your CSA staff along with the Manitoba Simmental Association have been busy putting the final touches on the 2022 Canadian Simmental Convention July 21st-24th in Portage la Prairie, MB. This has been an event that has been three years in the making and now that Covid restrictions have been relaxed, we can once again gather to conduct the business of the CSA. The Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation auction also returns this year and was a very successful event once again. The sale offering consisted of an excellent variety of items with something for everyone. Special thank you to Everett Olson (Downhill Simmentals) who has donated a bred heifer for this year’s auction. Your generosity is very much appreciated! The Young Canadian Simmental Association (YCSA) National Show is also back this year and YCSA coordinator, Crystal Fisk and the organizing committee have worked hard at putting together an exciting event. The 2022 Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) Director positions were all filled by acclamation with no voting required. Barclay Smith begins a three year term in filling the position vacated by retiring Alberta director Roger Deeg. Randy Noble will fill the role of the new director from Saskatchewan as President Marlin Leblanc leaves our board. Shane Williams is returning for his second term as the director

from Ontario. We welcome all three directors and thank Marlin and Roger for their commitment and dedication to Simmental and the CSA. In the spring of 2022, the CSA Board of Directors, at the request of numerous CSA members, proposed to the CSA membership two changes to its by-laws. One was to recognize a 7/8 male as a Purebred Simmental rather than the current requirement of 15/16. The other was to allow an option for electronic voting on issues pertaining to the CSA. Voting packages were mailed to all eligible CSA members over the age of 18 and both proposed changes received the required amount of support to move forward. The voting results were as follows: - The vote to change the purebred status from 15/16 to 7/8 for Purebred Simmental was 227 in support and 105 against which achieved the required 2/3 majority - The vote to allow the option for the CSA to conduct electronic voting was 308 in support and 22 opposed which also achieved the required 2/3 majority The CSA will now move forward in requesting approval from the Federal Minister of Agriculture via Agriculture and Agrifood Canada (AAFC). Changes to the CSA by-laws will then be finalized pending approval from AAFC. It is important to note that neither change will come into effect before approval is received from AAFC. Summer is always a busy time with 4-H and Junior shows to support, along with completing our haying and silage tasks. We also hope to see as many of you as possible in Portage la Prairie to enjoy some great Manitoba Simmental hospitality!

Breed

IMPROVEMENT

By Sean McGrath Breed Improvement Coordinator for the Canadian Simmental Association

The Power of Genetic Recombination – or “It’s Complicated” Perhaps the question I am most often asked regarding genetics is how full sibs or animals with the same pedigree can have different EPD. A good way to explain this is through a pedigree tree. In this example, we are going to breed Mr. Greenlight to Miss Redlight to create 2 full sibs (Greenlight JR and Miss Redlight 2) which we will then mate to produce a sample of 10 full sibs that represent just a few of the thousands of potential outcomes (Figure 1).

Figure 1. A pedigree tree showing 2 matings of Mr. Greenlight to Miss Redlight and the subsequent mating of full sib offspring Greenlight JR and Miss Redlight 2 to produce 10 calves.

In the first mating we get one male calf and one female calf. They each contain one gene copy from Mr. Greenlight and one copy of each gene from Ms. Redlight. The pedigree tree is shown fleshed out to show the actual chromosomes and DNA that are passed forward (Figure 3.). If we look at the example, it is apparent that even though Mr. Greenlight Jr and Miss Redlight 2 have the same parents (they are full sibs) that they have 1 chromosome in pair 3 that is completely different (circled). If they did not, they would both be the same sex. Figure 2. Mr. Greenlight’s chromosome pairs In this second generation, it also appears that the chromosomes and thus the DNA of these 2 full sibs are very close.

Our logical mind may say at this point that these offspring should be very similar. After all, the pedigree is identical on both sides of the final mating. This would be a very tightly linebred scenario. Let’s follow our example through in a bit more detail and see what happens. First, we need to understand that every calf is a combination of ½ of the genes from the sire and ½ from the dam. These genes are spread across 60 chromosomes or 30 pairs. For this example, we are going to simplify things and use 3 pairs of chromosomes to make our point. We will use Mr. Greenlight’s chromosomes as an example (Figure 2.). There are two pairs of regular chromosomes (Pair 1, Pair 2) and 1 pair of sex chromosomes (Pair 3). The sex chromosome will determine if the calf is a male or female. If Mr. Greenlight passes on the small chromosome in pair 3 the calf will be male. If he passes on a large chromosome from pair 3 the calf will be a heifer.

8

To further simplify we will assume that Mr. Greenlight is homozygous for every gene in his DNA. In other words, for every gene both of his copies are the same. We will assume the same thing for Ms. Redlight. This massive oversimplification means that the original animals in the pedigree can only pass on one version of each gene they possess.

In the next generation, things start to look more complicated. To understand this, it is important to realize that animals do not pass on an exact replica of one of their original chromosomes. During the process of meiosis (producing sperm and eggs) the chromosomes will trade parts of their DNA with the other partner in their chromosome pair. This is called random recombination and is very important as it produces much of the variation that allows animals and populations to adapt to changing conditions over time. This variation is a key driver of evolution and is what creates the differences that allow cattle breeders to select cattle that fit their long-term goals. Again, these 10 calves represent a very simplified example of the potentially infinite combinations that can occur just in this simple breeding example. Looking at the chromosome profile of the example calves, we can see DNA that ranges from exact copies of grandparent DNA, matches to parent DNA and combinations that looks vastly different from any previous generations. This is all happening in a full sib mating situation. If animals are less closely related, the phenomenon could be even more pronounced. To flesh things out a bit further let’s examine 4 of the offspring from the chromosome diagram as examples (Figure 4, 5, 6, 7). We will assume for the purposes of our example that there are only 3 traits, calving ease which is all on chromosome 1, weaning weight that is contained on chromosome 2 and sex that is determined simply by which copy of pair 3 is received from the sire. Let’s further assign a genetic value to the genes on each of the first 2 chromosome pairs (Table 1.). By using some simple math based on what DNA the calf received we can thus assign an EPD for Calving Ease and Weaning weight to our 4 examples and see how the same pedigree can result in a very different EP Table 1.

Green Red

Pair 1 Calving Ease -20 +20

Figure 4, A male calf that received all Green genes His genetic value is CE -20 and WW +100. Genetically the calf is identical to the original Mr. Greenlight.

Figure 6. A male calf with approximately 70% Green genes and 30% Red genes. His resulting genetic value is CE -8 and WW +85.

Pair 2 Weaning Weight 100 50

Figure 5. A female calf that received 1/2 Green and 1/2 Red genes. Her genetic value would be the average of Green and Red with CE 0 and WW +75.

Figure 7. A female calf with Red genes on pair 1 and Green genes on pair 2. Her resulting CE is +20 and WW is +100.

Looking at some of the potential outcomes shown in the chromosome chart, we can start to see that things can get complicated quickly. In real life, cattle have 10 times as many chromosome pairs, hundreds of times as many traits

and thousands of times as many genes. Instead of the genes for complex traits like growth or fertility being contained on a single chromosome they are spread across the genome of the animal (Figure 8). How Do We Figure Out the Complex Problem of What Genes are Passed On? If we head back to the original comment regarding the most common question received regarding genetic evaluation and why an animals EPD may be different from a full sib or even from the parental average, I think the chromosome example starts to explain how some of that variation may occur. Through the process known as random recombination of genes, each new generation, every sperm, and every egg contain a unique portion of sire and dam DNA. This is extremely important for animal breeders as it lets us create/select genetics that can accomplish specific goals. For example, in our simplified 3 chromosome world, we can see how we could create a “curvebender” animal with all red genes at pair 1 (easy calving) and all green on pair 2 (heavy weaning weight). Figure 8. A more realistic graphic depiction of 30 chromosome pairs containing multiple genes per chromosome. Note that the calf is a male (Small Y chromosome in the top right)

Fortunately, there is a lot of genetic overlap between animals, and so we can start to predict potential outcomes. The first basic step is to start with the assumption that offspring will be the average of the sire and dam. This is generally a safe place to start. The second step is to collect performance data on the animal and the other animals that it is managed with. If we managed the 10 offspring shown in our Chromosome chart together, we would expect to see some performance differences in Calving Ease and Weaning Weight. These differences can help to inform us about how much Green vs. Red genes each individual carries. In the real world it is a bit more complex, looking more like Figure 8., so we use more complex methods to help determine the DNA contained in each animal. If the animal has offspring, we can use the information from their performance to help us figure out the genetics of the parent stock with increased accuracy. Finally, with today’s technology we can conduct a high-density DNA test in which we go directly into the DNA of the animal and look at what components are present in the genotype of the animal. In some cases, this may be for a single gene such as colour (homozygous black for example) or it may be for a more complex set of traits spread across multiple chromosomes such as growth, longevity, or carcass merit. As we determine more information about the DNA an animal contains it is possible that the animal may change from our original prediction or away from the parental average or even from full siblings. Thinking about genetic recombination and variation explains the importance of continuing to measure and collect the data that is crucial for understanding each new generation of genetics. This simplified example also reveals some of the power of modern genetic evaluations to navigate through an animal’s genetic map and determine their relative genetic merit for various traits. This is a tremendously powerful tool for seedstock breeders when we are sorting through genetic recombination and variability to select towards specific goals. The power of recombination is that it lets us breed some cattle that are beyond expectation. By measuring cattle and participating in genetic evaluation, we can then identify those cattle and use them moving forward to help reach our goals. 9

Vets

ADVICE By Roy Lewis, DVM

+

SHORTAGE OF VETS AND WHAT THEY AND YOU AS CATTLE PRODUCERS CAN DO Huge talk about the shortage of veterinarians especially large animal but also small animal emergency etc out there in society. Recent announcement of the Calgary Veterinary School will expand from the current 50 students as of two years ago to 100 students within a few years. So in two years 50 students will be graduating but that is because of the elimination of Alberta seats in Calgary. Bottom line this current increase we wont see any difference for seven years when 100 start graduating so what do we need to do in the meantime. I would suggest as producers raising commercial or purebred cattle or other production animals what are some current strategies we need to employ to help the situation. The biggest apparent shortage appears at calving season as emergencies when veterinarians are busy doing herd work in many cases. Have a good relationship with your veterinarian and I would suggest in many cases it is really good if he/ she is affiliated with a haul in facility for the emergencies such as calling’s, c-sections or routine things such as calf examinations, post mortems in many cases, prolepses and even the few semen evaluations scenario. If you have the need for these veterinary emergencies and elective procedures find a clinic that performs the service and be prepared to bring individual problems in. This keeps the veterinarian efficient and can serve a big area for emergencies. I am more familiar in Alberta but slowly over time regional clinics that are bigger having more veterinarians employed and thus more back up lab facilities etc will be more the norm. I know it is tough in some areas that over time have had clinics shut down. Usually herd health work if organized is booked in and veterinarians are starting to do a certain area on a certain day in some cases. I have only just recently started to hear of clinics not accepting new clients and I thought that was only reserved for the medical profession. Encourage and work with female veterinarians. They are the dominant gender in the profession now and I have met many that can definitely do anything that I did and more in practice. I have seen many a time what they may lack in brute strength they make up for in technique and ingenuity and on a rare occasion asking for help. Keep in mind for herd work that your facilities may play a big role. Quicker processing, semen testing, pregnancy checking may mean a lower price but also more time and easier for you. I can’t say more how a good handling tub system leading to a hydraulic chute and palpation cage makes things go smoother and quicker for everyone. You also do not loose patience and both yourself and the veterinarian are not exhausted at the end of the day. Try and group schedule in an area and clinics should do the same to clump calls together. As long as good biosecurity is practiced.

Some vets and semi retired ones may be able to provide tele-medicine if they know your herd and you provide a short video or series of pictures. There should be a charge for this or worked into your herd agreement but still saves you time and money. The scope of experienced technicians is expanding whereby things like BSE testing or post mortems with pictures taken so the vet can make the diagnosis are creating efficiencies in large animal practice. The veterinary technician is a very valuable part of the veterinary team so in the future perhaps regulatory work sampling and specific herd visits even pregnancy testing may be carried out with veterinary technicians. There is even a course now where veterinary technicians under the supervision of a veterinarian can do pregnancy testing and that could be expanded to palpation of heifers. The team approach at clinics is what is going to win the day. Even today even though IV hook ups to calves are pretty rare it is often technicians that do them. If you are a specific geographic area that is short of veterinarians this may take time but perhaps a community clinic or have a scholarship to defray tuition for a specific vet student to apply for and come back into a specific area could work. Bigger clinics have in some cases got satellite clinics that may work and feed into the main clinic. Some partially retired vets can be coaxed back into practice even if just to do the tale-medicine or offer consultation over the phone. The bottom-line is working towards a service that is sustainable and fulfilling for the young veterinarian going into the future and for the young producer getting access to veterinary services. It may pay to ask your herd veterinarian what you are supposed to do in an emergency. In Alberta at least the veterinary by-laws say you need to provide emergency service or have arrangements for veterinary services for your clients. Those veterinary services could very well be hauling into an emergency clinic. The more we all work on prevention of disease, accidents, injuries and animal welfare the less will be the need for the emergencies. The reality is there will always be some emergencies. Encourage those that have an aptitude for cattle health to pursue large animal veterinary medicine. I have found it an extremely rewarding career and really enjoy working on cattle both at the herd and individual level. Purebred breeders generally may have exposure to several vets’ specialists often do embryo transfer, semen collection and even export testing. Some specialists may even do routine work as well. Here’s to a longstanding symbiotic relationship between the veterinary community in general and purebred/commercial cattle producers. If having trouble gaining veterinary service talk to fellow producers and whom they use and for routine work don’t be afraid to book in with the veterinarian you have the best rapport and faith in.

As a first-generation purebred livestock breeder Barclay Smith hopes his experience with cattle as well as in business will be of value to the Canadian Simmental Association (CSA).

“That was where it started,” says Smith. “And each year for the next few years I kept adding another purebred heifer to build a herd.” Along with being involved with 4-H projects, Smith joined the Young Canadian Simmental Association (YCSA) — first being involved with the provincial Wildrose Classic show in the central Alberta community of Bashaw in 1996, followed by being involved with the YCSA National Show, also held in Bashaw in 1997.

Smith, who along with family members operates SIBL Simmentals at Cherhill, AB, about 80 km northwest of Edmonton is joining the CSA as an Alberta director in July. As he officially joins CSA at the annual general meeting in Portage La Prairie, MB,he is just wrapping his second three-year term as a director of the Alberta Simmental Association (ASA) — serving this past year as ASA president.

Also during his teens, his summer jobs including working for another Simmental breeder helping them prepare and show cattle at Farmfair in Edmonton and a year or so later he was able to bring a couple of his own cattle to show at the event as well.

“I believe it is important to get involved and help out if you can with industry associations and committees,” says Smith, who is marking 25 years as an active Simmental breeder. He had served a three-year term as an ASA director several years ago before re-joining the board six years ago. Along with that, Smith has also served as the Simmental representative on the Beef Committee of Farmfair International in Edmonton. Born and raised on the family-owned commercial cow-calf operation at Cherhill, Smith fell in love with purebred cattle at an early age. He bought his first purebred Simmental heifer calf —Miss Daleen 26C — for a 4-H project in 1993. 12 SC Summer2022.indd 12

As Smith was busy earning his post secondary education in the late 1990s, he drifted away from 4-H and YCSA projects but not his involvement with Simmental cattle. The herd continued to grow and in 1997, along with his parents Ivan and Linda he established the SIBL Simmental farm name — the acronym covering the names of the farm principles — Smith Ivan Barclay Linda. “The home farm had a smaller land base so my dad always worked off farm, and as I finished school, I have also worked off farm as well,” says Smith. “Our Simmental herd numbers continued to increase until we sort of reached a tipping point in 2018. We realized we had too many cows and

2022-07-27 11:27:33 AM

“As Alberta has the largest number of purebred Simmental registrations in the country, I would like to be part of the provincial voice at the national level,” not enough time, it became too much to manage.” So the decision was made to reduce the herd to a more manageable size. They sold about half of the female cattle as well as the main herd sire. “It was a tough decision, but the right decision,” says Smith. Today, Smith and his wife Michelle and their three children Cassie, Bailey and Cooper run a herd of between 30 and 40 Red and Black Simmental females and also in partnership with good friends produce a few embryo calves. His parents still help out as needed. “It was important to get numbers down to a manageable level — now producing quality purebred Simmental cattle is fun again,” he says. SIBL Simmental along with other breeders has been involved with the On Target Bull and Female Sale held in Barrhead, AB each March. “We’ve been involved with that sale for about 15 years, and between ourselves and other partners we market between 15 and 20 bulls each year,” says Smith. They also market female cattle at a select fall sale as well as private treaty.

In becoming a CSA director, Smith says he hopes his knowledge and experience can be of value. “As Alberta has the largest number of purebred Simmental registrations in the country, I would like to be part of the provincial voice at the national level,” he says. “I also have a keen interest in supporting youth programs within the association. And from a business standpoint I have experience with risk management programs so that may be an area where I can provide assistance or support.

“I have always been very passionate about the Simmental breed and in joining the CSA board it is an opportunity to be active in the national association” he says. “As I look at the future of the agriculture industry across the country, I am glad to have the opportunity to be involved.”

Along with the purebred beef operation at home, Smith works off farm with Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC) as Team Lead, Insurance and AgriStability responsible for a 10-member team in several AFSC offices across north-central Alberta. In the last half of 2021 he also served as Manager of the Livestock Price Insurance Program for Western Canada.

Randy Noble says he’s been fortunate to have the best of two worlds. For more than 30 years he enjoyed an off-farm career working in the oil and gas industry, and also along with family members he’s been part of a long time purebred Simmental operation in northwest Saskatchewan. Now that he’s retired from the off-farm career, he continues to be actively involved in the familyrun Black Gold Simmental at Hillmond, Sask, northeast of Lloydminster. And starting this summer, he’s also been afforded the opportunity to begin serving his first three-year term as a director on the Canadian Simmental Association (CSA). “I don’t have any particular agenda when it comes to serving on the CSA board,” says Noble in an interview prior to attending his first CSA annual general meeting held in July in Portage La Prairie, MB. “The association and Simmental breeders have done an excellent job over the years in all aspects of breed development and marketing. I just figured it was time to give back to the organization.” Noble was born and raised on what is now a third generation family farm. In the early 1970s his parents, Jim and Sabra Noble bought the first Simmental cattle — starting with two half-blood Simmental heifers purchased at Canadian Western Agribition in Regina in 1973. That was the start of the purebred operation later to be called Black Gold Simmental, that in the early years involved Jim and Sabra and their four sons, Randy, Lyle, Owen and Neil. The farm that has been through a few valleys and peaks over the years, today is recognized as producer of high quality Simmental cattle including full bloods as well as blacks and reds.

Black Gold Simmental today is operated by Randy and his wife Vanessa, their sons Ryley and Toby, along with Randy’s brother and nephew, Neil and Jeff Noble and their families. “We started with those two half-blood heifers and just kept building from there,” says Noble. Being in a major oil producing area, they felt it fitting to name the farm Black Gold Simmental. “I was fortunate to be able to live on the family farm and pursue an off-farm career, as family members looked after the day to day operations,” he says. The family faced a tough decision in 2002, as their part of Saskatchewan had been stressed by several back-to-back years of drought. “We had built up the herd to 350 cows all with calves and there had been several years of drought which made it an increasing challenge to find and afford feed for the cattle,” says Noble. “So we made the decision to disperse the herd. It was a major event over two days as we sold everything. It was just a terrible feeling to see those cows go, but we had to do it.” But it wasn’t too many years later Black Gold Simmental got back into the purebred business. “Our two sons were born in 1996 and 1998 so as we got into the mid-2000’s they were interested in being involved in 4-H and showing purebred cattle,” says Noble. “They had a real interest in purebred cattle and their interest sort of got us motivated and

“The association and Simmental breeders have done an excellent job over the years in all aspects of breed development and marketing. I just figured it was time to give back to the organization.” rejuvenated about the purebred industry.” They began to rebuild the breeding herd and it also started to rain. Weather patterns in northwest Saskatchewan returned to more normal rainfall. “The growing conditions over the past 20 years have been much better than they were in the 10 years before that,” says Noble. “Except for drought of 2021 — that was a bit of wake up call on how quickly

conditions can change, but we are back to more normal growing conditions this year.” Today, Black Gold Simmental has a herd of 300 female cattle, along with bull breeding stock. Since the early 1980s their program has had a strong focus on producing full blood Simmental cattle, although they also now produce red and black Simmental as well. “You have to know what your customers want and this area has always had strong support for the full blood Simmental,” says Noble. Those are predominantly white faced cattle with coloured patches or “goggles” around the eyes, and solid coloured bodies. The farm has also had good demand for red and black Simmental as well. Their female herd today is about 50 per cent full blood Simmental, with the other 50 per cent split about evenly between red and black animals. The farm has traditionally held a female production sale in the fall, followed by a March bull sale at local auctionmart facilities. In 2021 Black Gold Simmentals transitioned to hosting their own onfarm sales.

“We started with the female sale in the fall of 2021 and then the bull sale in March both held on the farm,” says Noble. “It was partly because we had the facilities and also because we believe it is easier on the animals. It can be stressful moving them to a different location for the sale. And also we learned during the pandemic there are other effective ways to sell cattle. People are now quite comfortable with video sales and on-line auctions. So now we produce videos of the cattle for on-line sales, but we also welcome buyers to the farm as well. “ The Noble family has always enjoyed showing cattle and each year participate in major livestock events such as the Stockade Roundup in Lloydminster, Farm Fair in Edmonton and Agribition in Regina. “We enjoy showing people the type of cattle we produce, while the other part of the showing cattle is meeting people,” says Noble. “You get to connect not only with other Simmental breeders but people involved in all breeds and the industry in general. We produce cattle but this is definitely a people business.” Noble says he appreciates the success the Simmental breed has had in developing cattle that are high performing and at the same time very efficient. “I strongly believe the CSA has done a tremendous job over the years in guiding the development of the breed and providing support to breeders,” he says.

“I’m not joining the board with any idea that something needs to be fixed. I’m just excited to be part of the organization, see what I can learn and where I can, help the breed to grow.”

From The

Gatepost By Bruce Holmquist General Manager, Canadian Simmental Association

Gordon Presented

BIF Ambassador Award

By Angie Stump Denton, Beef Improvement Federation Communication Coordinator, angiedenton@ksu.edu or 785-562-6197 June 2, 2022

B. Lynn Gordon (center), Grand Island, Nebraska, receives the Beef Improvement Federation Ambassador Award from Matt Perrier, 2022 BIF president. Gordon was honored June 2 at the organization’s 54th Annual Symposium and Convention in Las Cruces, New Mexico. MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) presented Dr. B. Lynn Gordon the BIF Ambassador Award June 2 during the group’s annual symposium in Las Cruces, New Mexico. This award is presented annually by BIF to a team or member of the media for his or her efforts in spreading the BIF message and its principles to a larger audience.

More than 300 beef producers, academia and industry representatives attended the organization’s 54th Annual Research Symposium and Convention in Las Cruces, New Mexico. BIF’s mission is to help improve the industry by promoting greater acceptance of beef cattle performance evaluation.

Gordon has an enthusiastic passion for the beef industry and has dedicated her career to fostering beef improvement through her roles working with breed and state associations, the Extension service, as a freelance writer, and most recently as an agricultural leadership and marketing consultant. She began her career working for the University of Minnesota Extension Service and then pursued roles as an education and communications director for state and national beef industry organizations, including serving as editor of publications at the Red Angus Association of America and the American Hereford Association.

For more information about this year’s symposium, including additional award winners and coverage of meeting and tours, visit BIFSymposium. com.

Throughout her career, Gordon has contributed to the beef industry as a former Livestock Publications Council board member, a livestock photographer, editor, and freelance writer often featuring articles about generations of seedstock families and the changing role of genetic evaluation, as well as many leadership topics. In 2019, Gordon attended the World Angus Conference in Uruguay as a media representative. Some publications Gordon’s byline has appeared in include: BEEF, Progressive Cattle, Hereford America, Joplin Cattlemen’s News, The Stockman and several Canadian publications.

The Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) is an organization dedicated to coordinating all segments of the beef industry — from researchers and producers to retailers — in an effort to improve the efficiency, profitability and sustainability of beef production. The organization was initiated more than 50 years ago to encourage the use of objective measurements to evaluate beef cattle. Continuing the tradition, BIF is now the clearinghouse for developing standardized programs and methodologies for recording of performance data for all traits, from birth weights to carcass traits. Its three-leaf-clover logo symbolizes the link between industry, extension and research.

“Gordon has a long history with the Beef Improvement Federation. She attended her first convention in Sheridan, Wyoming in the mid-90’s, followed with attendance at 10 more conventions throughout her career,” says Burt Rutherford. “She was instrumental in overseeing nominations of several Outstanding Seedstock Producers from Nebraska. Plus, she assisted the promotional team in 2001 when the event was in Wichita, Kansas, and served on the planning team for BIF in 2002 when it was hosted in Omaha, Nebraska.” 18 SC Summer2022.indd 18

Breed

IMPROVEMENT

By Sean McGrath Breed Improvement Coordinator for the Canadian Simmental Association

Figure 1.

Figure 3.

Figure 2.

Figure 4.

Figure 5.

Figure 6.

50

Figure 7.

Figure 8.

Reg Schellenberg

CCA President

It’s been an eventful couple of months to say the least. There is a great deal of positive news to share with you! On the heels of a very successful public and government affairs campaign to secure an exemption from front-of-package (FOP) labelling on ground beef, we launched a new brand and name in early July. We are now known as the Canadian Cattle Association (CCA). Before getting into details of CCA’s rebranding, I’d like to provide an update on the CCA’s efforts on FOP labelling for ground beef and celebrate our successes as an industry on this file. For the better part of May and June, it was all hands on deck for the CCA board members and staff when it came to engaging Members of Parliament (MPs), Senators, officials at Health Canada, and consumers on the proposed regulatory change that would have seen a warning label for saturated fat placed on ground beef. With Canadians consuming approximately half of their calories from low-nutrient, ultra-processed foods, such a regulatory change would have sent the wrong message to consumers about the nutritional benefits of whole, single-ingredient foods like ground beef. Ground beef is a nutrient-dense protein that contributes iron, zinc, and vitamin B12, and continues to be an important staple in the diets of many Canadians and their families. Making up 50 per cent of all beef sold in Canada, ground beef is a popular choice as it affordable, nutritious, delicious, and easy to prepare. We are very appreciative of the strong support that we received from Canadians – from both urban and rural communities – in our efforts to have ground beef exempted from needing a warning label. We established an important connection with Canadians over the nutritional value of beef with thousands of letters being sent to MPs from across the country! We couldn’t have done it without the help of our provincial member associations, who shared our collective concerns with provincial government officials as well as with local and regional media outlets. This initiative was truly a #teambeef effort and a win for the entire industry! The Don’t Label My Beef campaign showed us how quickly Canadians could mobilize in support of cattle farmers and ranchers, and the important role that public opinion plays in Government policy decisions.

With confidence that Canadians have demonstrated in Canadian beef over this issue, we are very much looking forward to continuing the conversation with consumers on other important issues such as the connection between cattle production and climate solutions. This is where our new brand comes in. We are very proud to launch our new brand as the Canadian Cattle Association as it pays tribute to our past, while looking ahead to the future. In my first column, I shared that one of top priorities as CCA President is to leave a vibrant industry for our next generation. It’s no secret that cattle production is always evolving. As we move forward as industry, so does our brand. We are fortunate to have a strong and diverse group of people invested in this industry, from coast to coast. Our new brand identity was created to encompass everyone in Canada who plays a key role in raising the world’s best beef. This sentiment holds true when it comes to my own ranch. As a fifth-generation ranching operation, our success is rooted in the contributions of all family members, and in the hard work and dedication of Canadians from pasture to plate. Our new brand will open new opportunities to continue to tell our industry’s positive story when it comes to our environment, our culture, our food security, our economy, and our future as a country. Our new logo is inspired by the key elements of importance to our organization: Our country, our cattle, and our environment. Despite the change of our organization’s name - our commitment is steadfast – we will continue to be the national voice of Canada’s beef producers and represent your interests in Ottawa and on the international stage. I’m proud of our heritage and our ongoing efforts to conserve our ecosystems, while producing consumers flavourful and nutritious beef. Our goal is simple—to sustainably produce the world class beef that Canadians love. We are cattle country.

ach year the CSA publishes a list of the “Top 50” Simmental Sires based on the number of progeny registered from the prior year’s registrations. The CSA Board of Directors decided that it was now time to feature Simmental females that provide the largest impact through the number of progeny and grand-progeny registered from them. These numbers are based on over-all registrations in the CSA herd-book. We were not able to source pictures for all of the females listed, and if readers have pictures of those cows we would appreciate having a copy for next year’s edition of the “Top 50” Simmental cows in Canada! 27

Our Deepest

Sympathies

Monday, November 20th, 1950 - Thursday, December 30th, 2021 With broken hearts, we announce the sudden passing of Brian on December 30, 2021, of Owen Sound, formerly of Holland Centre in his 72nd year. Beloved husband of Pearl for over 46 years. Loving brother of Gary and his wife Linda of Owen Sound, and Karl of St. Mary’s. Loved and remembered by sister-inlaw Lynda of London, brother in law Russ (Jan) of New Brunswick, James (Monica) of Mount Elgin, Barb Whitney of Guelph and Catherine Whitney of Sarnia. Proud and adoring uncle of Kevin (Amanda), Jeff (Sarah) and David (Amanda) Bumstead, Jessica (Mark) Searle, Cara (Issac) Baskovic, Marissa (Andrew) Jones, Melody (Mark) Owen, Chelsea, Elise and Matthew (Morgan) Whitney. Brian is predeceased by his parents Lloyd and Marie and brothers in law Dean Whitney and Heinz Bauch. Brian was the kindest and most hardworking man you could find. He retired from his career with Bell Canada Brian Seymour in 1997 and spent the following 13 years with various positions of work before finding his exit career at Ice River Springs for 10 years. Brian and Pearl lived on the big beautiful, immaculately maintained farm for 43 Bumstead years and had recently made the decision to move into Owen Sound and start their retirement. He loved farming and all things agriculture. His passion was in Simmental cattle. Brian and Pearl raised Purebred and Full Blood Simmental Cattle and he held many positions with the Grey Bruce Simmental Club. Brian and Pearl were the co-chairs of the International Plowing Match in 2004 in Meaford, a 5 year commitment with countless hours spent planning and organizing. He lived a very colourful life in his community as a Director at Participation Lodge, sitting on Chatsworth Town Council during the amalgamation years, and as a founding member of the Holland Centre/Williamsford Lions Club. Brian will be greatly missed by his entire community.

Larry Peter Dembiczak, late of Weyburn, SK passed away April 11, 2022 at the age of 84 years. Larry was predeceased by his parents, John and Ida Dembiczak; his sister Doris Gelsinger; brothers-in-law: Joe Gelsinger, Murray Lazoskie, Martin Mastel and Johnny Mastel. Larry is survived by his brother Daniel (Rose) Dembiczak; his sisters: Irene Mastel, Dolores Mastel and Bernice Lazoskie; as well as many nieces and nephews. Larry farmed in the R.M. of Lake Alma with his brother Daniel until he retired in 2005 and moved to Weyburn. Larry was a hardworking, dedicated, loyal farming partner and devoted uncle to his nieces and nephews. He enjoyed fishing, travelling, curling, polka music, teasing and telling jokes.
