2019 Canadian Simmental Convention

019 has approached the mid-way point and the Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) Convention in St. Hyacinthe, Quebec is just around the corner. During the convention, the CSA Annual General Meeting will be held to conduct the association’s business and reporting to the CSA membership. There have been some changes with the electoral system leading to the AGM with the CSA moving to a mail in ballot structure which replaced the old process that used proxies for those who were unable to attend the AGM and still wanted to vote. Our first time implementing this process went smoothly and was a success with 153 members voting, with a handful of ballots disqualified as spoiled. In the end CSA members voted 129 in favor of and 9 opposed to the proposed by-law change of parentage verifying all calves to be registered that are born as a result of Embryo Transplant procedures. This is well beyond the two-thirds majority required to pass and is now a requirement. In the election of the CSA Director from the region of Ontario, Shane Williams, East Garafraxa, Ontario was the successful candidate. He will join returning directors Marlin LeBlanc, Estevan, Saskatchewan and Roger Deeg, Strathmore, Alberta who were declared elected by acclamation, all three for three year terms to the CSA board. Marlin and Roger are currently CSA directors and their new terms as well as Shane’s will start following the 2019 CSA Annual General Meeting. The CSA would like to thank Larry Barkley and Tina Hiddink who allowed themselves to be nominated and were part of the election process with additional thanks to Larry for serving as a CSA director for the past three years. Larry continues to serve as a CSA director until the completion of the CSA AGM.

4

Many favorable comments have been received on the new process as it allows each CSA member to know that their vote was counted as per their wishes which was not necessarily the case with the old proxy based process. One question that has risen from some CSA members is whether a change should be made towards allowing only members within a specific region to vote for the candidates in that region; rather than the entire CSA membership deciding. If you have an opinion as to how this process is currently structured please contact myself or any CSA director and make your thoughts known. Although the voting has been completed, we are anticipating good attendance for the CSA convention and the Quebec Simmental Association has an excellent schedule of events planned that will combine fellowship with Simmental breeders from across Canada with some of the culture and charm that Quebec has to offer. Tours lead off the activities followed by the Provincial President’s Meeting, as well as the CSA and Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation (FCSF) Annual General Meetings. The CSA banquet and FCSF auction are definitely highlights of the weekend and as usual the Young Canadian Simmental Association National Classic show is on during the four days with the YCSA show on Sunday completing the series of events. We expect approximately 70 youth and 100 head of some of the best Simmental cattle in Canada to be in the barns so make plans to join us for a great time in “La Belle Province” while we conduct the business of the CSA and grow the Simmental enthusiasm.

Breed Improvement

By Sean McGrath Breed Improvement Coordinator for the Canadian Simmental Association

What part of the equation are you operating on?

O

Heritability – It may seem difficult or impossible to ne of the most famous equations in genetics or animal change the heritability of a trait, however the ability to more breeding is: Rate of Genetic Change = Heritability x Selection Differential accurately select the trait accomplishes the goal of increased heritability. In other words, if we can remove more environmental Generation Interval While change is a point of contention amongst beef cattle effects, we know more about the genetic ones. There are several breeders, this equation becomes extremely important when we put tools to help with this, but key ones include data collection, it into context with our competition in the protein industry. This complete herd reporting and DNA testing. All of these processes includes pork, chicken and if you have been watching the news help us to more accurately separate the genetic influences from environmental ones. lately “Beyond Meat” (Peas and additives). Selection Differential – We all do this when we select When we think about genetic change, we hopefully are targeting genetic “improvement” as the change we are looking for. replacement heifers or herdsires. Embryo transfer and AI is Better rather than more. In order to keep pace with other protein another way to greatly increase the selection differential. Even if options we require some real pressure on the parts of the equation we use a sire within our own herd, owner’s use semen might allow us to vastly increase that sire’s influence in the cow herd, through we can change as breeders. Heritability – heritability is basically a number that increased matings. That increases our selection differential. describes how much of the variation we can see in a trait can be Another method is increasing the selection pressure on the attributed to genetics vs. how much is environmentally controlled. cowherd. Total herd reporting provides one of the useful tools to A trait such as horns is highly heritable and can be explained increase selection differential. Generation Interval – we like to think in beef cattle that we by a few simple genes, but traits such as carcass and growth are more complicated, involving more genes and environmental are doomed to a long generation interval, however we may bring interactions. Fertility and longevity have even more environmental this upon ourselves in some respects. Reducing the average age of influences on their expression and so are less heritable than growth the cow herd, increases our rate of genetic change by shortening or carcass. When we look at the rate of change we can make in a the generation interval. There are some new technologies (used trait it should not be surprising that it is easier to change colour, more in dairy) involving IVF Embryo transfer that can shave years or horn status than growth rate or carcass merit and even harder to off the generation interval of cattle production. While these may be a bit “out there” for many beef producers we need to keep in mind improve fertility traits. Selection Differential – selection differential is the that our competition often turns several generations a year. One amount of pressure we put on selecting the next generation of of our challenges is that in commercial production cow longevity parent stock. The ability to make progress is enhanced when we (sustained fertility) is a major profit driver, however direct selection put more pressure on the next generation. For example, selecting for longevity at the seedstock level greatly increases our generation one AI sire out of 10,000 head means that progress should be faster interval and reduces our potential impact on genetic change. This than if we were to use natural mating relying on the best 100 bulls is where new tools such as DNA testing have tremendous merit in out of the group of 10000. A good thought example for selection the seedstock side. The ability to garner information on longevity differential for those who may have tried to expand a cow herd at a young age allows us to turn generations more quickly yet still through retained heifers is to think about how many less than retain longevity for our customers. For commercial customers the optimal heifers or older cows you may have kept back in order best way to increase sustained fertility is to implement planned to grow numbers. The herd may have grown but the selection crossbreeding. No matter what we think about math, the breeding differential declined. Generation Interval – generation interval is simply equation gives a lot of food for thought. Whether we are how long it takes offspring to become parent stock. In beef cattle considering technologies and strategies to move the answer in this can be a long time and is one of our key disadvantages when the direction we choose, or we are picking our next sire, the most important parts of the equation are determining the changes we compared to other proteins. wish to achieve and the speed we want to achieve them at. Some Tilting the Equation in Our Favour… Rate of Genetic Change – The most powerful thing we of our goals may be contradictory to breeding improvements in can do with this part of the equation is to have an answer we are seedstock, with longevity perhaps being the best example. The working on. In other words, by having a goal we wish to move need to accurately pick the next generation is essential, and these towards we can ensure that our decisions and our pressure are are the tools that as a membership you work on through programs applied properly to change in the direction we wish to go. As such as THE, DNA collection and work with the IGS group on we add traits to our wish list, the pace of change will slow and enhancing the BOLT evaluation. As we move forward we need to ensure that we continue it becomes even more important to clearly define that goal. Our competition such as pigs and chickens have very clearly defined to work on this equation help customers of Simmental genetics carve out their place in the protein marketplace. breeding goals and we must as well.

YCSA Alumni Story Scott Preston Profile:

YCSA Develops Skills That Serve a Lifetime There aren’t too many days that go by that Scott Preston can’t stop to consider some of the skills he learned during his years of involvement with the Young Canadian Simmental Association (YCSA) that are valuable tools he can use in his career in the banking industry and every day life. While education and life took him in a different career direction than being a full time farmer on the family beef and cropping operation at Hamiota, MB, about 85 km north of Brandon, Preston, now CIBC’s director of commercial and agricultural banking in Manitoba, based in Brandon, says those years as a member of YCSA have paid many dividends. “I probably didn’t appreciate it at the time but being involved in YCSA is an excellent training ground for so many leadership skills,” says Preston. “Learning to be comfortable with public speaking, standing in front of a mic, learning to work with other people, learning how to run a meeting and learning how to organize events, these are just some of the skills you carry with you through life.” Along with a busy career and a growing family, Preston still keeps connected to the farm. He owns some cropland that is custom farmed and his parents, Allan and Sharon Preston, still keep about 15 head of purebred Simmental cattle. It’s only about an hour drive for Preston to get back to home territory. “I had thought someday after university about being a full-time farmer but plans change,” says Preston. “The whole experience of growing up on the farm, being involved in the beef industry and the Simmental Association provided an excellent foundation for life.”

Started With 4-H

Born and raised on the family-owned Preston Stock Farms at Hamiota — a mixed farm with at one time about 70 head of purebred Simmental — Preston got his first exposure to the livestock show ring at age 10. When he was just 12 years old, Scott bought his first purebred Simmental heifer calf in 1988. Soon after, he joined the YCSA program and attended his

With his just such dad on the National Canadian a great Simmental Association board, experience.” he attended his first national meeting in New Brunswick in 1990, competing in showmanship events. Over the next couple years he was involved with showing cattle at local shows and juggling time in a busy life that included high school, livestock and hockey. “I attended the Quebec City National Conference and joined the YCSA National Board in 1993 just as the YCSA program was being re-branded and relaunched,” says Preston. A year later as he graduated high school he also joined the board of the Manitoba YCSA program and served as provincial board chairperson for three years. Preston was involved in organizing the Manitoba YCSA Classic in 1994. In 1995 as a member of the National YCSA Board, he represented Canada at the American Junior Simmental Association Classic in Rochester, Minnesota and a few years later helped 9

organize the National YCSA Conference in Brandon in 1998. “I was very involved for a few years and learned a great deal,” says Preston. Part of the experience was learning about showing cattle and the livestock industry, but there were also other educational opportunities such as learning about public speaking, sales and marketing and event planning. “With every event I learned something that I could bring back and share with other YCSA members at the provincial and national level.” As he reached his early 20s, Preston began studies at the University of Manitoba requiring his involvement with the YCSA program to taper off. “My original plan was to get a Diploma in Agriculture and return to the family farm, or perhaps start a career nearby and be involved with the farm part-time,” says Preston. But the opportunity came along to join a bank as an agriculture account manager in Winnipeg in 2001. In 2006, he began studies toward his MBA and was later offered a sales management role with FCC in Brandon in 2007. “It was a promotion and also brought me to Brandon which was only about an hour from Hamiota,” he says. “It was much easier for me to get home to help out with the farm, which at that time was running about 70 head of Simmental cows.” He was married and completed his MBA in 2009. Discussions began and it was later decided to downsize the farming operation, which involved selling most of the cows. In 2011 Preston accepted his current post

with CIBC as Director of Commercial and Agriculture Banking. In 2019, in addition to this current role, he was appointed National Director of Agriculture for CIBC. A look back over his years with the YCSA program didn’t pinpoint a particular highlight, “there were many exceptional moments”, says Preston. “Probably what first stands out is just the people you meet and the friendships you make. It was just a great opportunity to network with so many people across the country and even in the U.S. Secondly, I would say it was the opportunity to see the country. Here I was just a teenager from Manitoba but I got to travel across most of the country visiting every province except B.C. and Newfoundland Labrador. I got to see so much of this country which was just such a great experience.” Growing up on the farm and his involvement with YCSA has served him well in his life and career. “Being involved in commercial and agricultural banking, my farm background enables me to better relate to many of the bank’s clients,” says Preston. “I have a good understanding of the challenges of the agricultural industry and can speak with confidence more specifically to the needs and issues of the beef industry.” “Perhaps in a broader sense, involvement through the YCSA program helps a young person develop a wide range of leadership skills from team work to effective communications that is something I can use every day.”

Scott Preston at Brandon Ag Ex in 1997 with no ordinary heifer. This heifer was reserve heifer calf champion at the Brandon show that year, but later grew into being an “extraordinary” cow. She was the first red factor female born on Preston Stock Farms and “she was easily the quietest cow we ever raised, she raised many high sellers including a $12,000 bull in 2004, she lived to see her 18th birthday and died of old age on the farm in 2015,” says Preston. Appuye sure la poteau de cloture

Par Bruce Holmquist Directeur général - Association Simmental du Canada

Convention 2019 de l’Association Simmental Canada

O

Vet’s Advice

DeStress To Reduce The Stress Of Transport

W

e all know when handling transporting, showing and shipping cattle stress is increased and weight loss and carcass changes can occur. A new, or should I say, reintroduced product is back on the market after having been shelved by Agriculture Canada for many years. The product comes under the name “DeStress” and is currently being marketed under the Wetaskiwin, Alberta feed mill. It in a way provides instant returns to the feedlot finisher in the way of increased yield, reducing dark cutters in half and is simply the right thing to provide from animal welfare perspective. It may even have a place simply when transporting our cattle whether it be to pastures or transported across the country for cattle shows potentially. Dr. Al Schaefer of Lacombe and others worked on derivatives of these product in excess of fifteen to twenty years of published research to get the formulation right. This article will provide an explanation of the product and how it gives the benefits to the cattle and the expected financial benefit. There are probably other areas in cattle, production and performance where feeding of this product could provide huge benefit. It has and is being used in other species as well. We all transport cattle many times in the course of a year. With transport of cattle regardless of the distance stress in the form of shrinkage, dehydration and the loss of electrolytes and amino acids occurs of that there is no doubt. Some types of animals have this to lessor or greater degrees than others. Genetics of the cattle, weather conditions, excitability or docility of the cattle method of handling will all determine what the final shrinkage will be. This stress of course makes them more susceptible to disease by decreasing immune function. Some of these thing are under our control and others simply are not. By feeding a product to replace ahead of time the expected losses of these necessary nutrients the cattle will arrive in better health with less shrink and less dark cutters and potentially grade better if slaughter cattle. For purebred and commercial cattle, they will get to their final destination in better shape less shrink and have less recovery to get back to normal hydration, etc. When transporting cattle either to a plant or auction market or home from pasture or to a cattle show or display, we all have looked at the proverbial shrink that occurs. We know that fecal loss, urine loss, sweat, etc. that there naturally will be weight loss or shrink. It is when this amount gets excessive and climbs well above the 2-4% we are hoping for that we recognize the significance. Some freshly weaned, transported and held overnight cattle at auction markets can shrink upwards of ten percent or even higher. If this is not replenished quickly after the stressful event cattle are more prone to get sick from other things or in the case of slaughter animals the dark cutters will increase. If we can retain some of that shrink by feeding a nutritive supplement before shipping which replaces these lost nutrients it will be a positive experience for the cattle and will return economically for the producer. DeStress is considered a nutritive supplement so has no

16

slaughter withdrawal and is not considered a pharmaceutical in any way. It contains a well-researched combination of electrolytes, amino acids and certain blood sugars. So similar to giving a scouring calf or stress diarrheic show bull electrolytes to counteract dehydration DeStress serves this same role. It is given though to healthy cattle to counteract this dehydration that occurs during transport and other stressful conditions. It is easy to administer as it is a feed supplement so is mixed into feed 24 hours before the stressful event such as transport. Dr. Schaefer and his researchers found about a 2% less shrink level over controls that was statistically significant. Also, improvements in carcass yield and grade were also noticed for those slaughtered. These all go hand in hand and one measurement affects the other. A two percent less shrink value could convert into 20 plus pounds depending on the size of the cattle. In these modern times where transportation seems to be under public scrutiny this should make cattle more comfortable. It probably should have been addressed when redoing the transportation code of practice. Kind of like us having Gatorade after a period of intense exercise. Transportation of cattle for sale or for slaughter is the primary usage but even after weaning or for show cattle benefits are seen. Severely shrunk cattle may command a higher price at the auction market but they are no doubt much more stressed and definitely more likely to get the BRD (bovine respiratory complex) among other infectious diseases. We all need to get around the expectation that we want shrunk out cattle. Stressful conditions such as parturition or recovery from illness will benefit from something like DeStress. Even shipping cull cows should benefit from this product although to a lesser degree than feedlot cattle. The more we can reduce morbidity or mortality with a non-prescription product that is a supplement is a win for the cattle industry. In the future there may be more specific guidelines regarding type of cattle, temperament, distance traveled, ambient temperature as to whether a nutritive supplement may even be mandatory. There was an average of over 8% shrink on 900-pound feeders which converts to over 70 lbs. The nutritive supplement will significantly reduce some of these losses. Adoption of a nutritive supplement program keys on ease of administration and feeding fits this requirement. It is about a couple pounds per 1100 lbs. of cattle. I would suggest going to the website www.destress-nutrition.com for more complete information. This is one more tool to insure healthy well treated cattle are being raised on Canadian farms. We all want to minimize stress of our cattle and decreasing disease leading to less antibiotics used. I see a time where certain products proved to be beneficial to transported cattle will be included in our protocols. Show cattle may be in less need as they are quiet and less prone to transportation stress. But we have all seen many off feed and or water for a day so stress does affect show cattle as well.

Hay The New Gold?

H

ay season is one of the most stressful times of the year for cattle producers. Many factors are out of our control like our famous weather where sometimes you ask yourself if the meteorologists are just flipping a coin to predict it on a long term. It’s always too wet or too dry and rarely the perfect growing season. Canada is a challenging country with many different climates where so many grasses and legumes varieties can be grown. I always say that putting hay up is an art. It has to be cut and baled at the right time to produce top quality feed. I often hear some people selling beef cattle quality hay because it has been rained on or is full of dust and they are wrong. Feed is the most important thing for your cattle. Better feed will improve your herd fertility for example and that will save you a lot on your cost of production. Hay is getting extremely expensive all around the country. Many reasons can explain this phenomenon. One of the main reasons is of course the many droughts that occur in some major hay regions in the last few years. Also, many people who have left their cattle production switch for cash crops so their hay fields have now been seeded to corn, soybeans and cereals. Another reason is our friends, the dairy producers, who with their quota system are ready to practically pay pretty much anything for hay bales when they are running low. There is also the winter kill which really hit the alfalfa field shard this winter in the East. It’s a

legume which can yield very strong but take lots of money and time to implant. Plus, hay bales cost a lot in transportation so when a major region gets hit by a bad crop you have to bring hay from a far distance and it gets very costly. Hay machineries are getting very expensive and you should always look to see if it would be more profitable to buy your feed, using custom contractors or making it yourself. When you are short in hay and pasture it’s always a hard choice between reducing the herd or buying feed. You have to take everything into consideration when analyzing it but when you are having a good year you have another dilemma, selling it or stacking it. Another thing that most people do is to to pay per bale and not per ton of hay. It’s pretty impossible to tell without a scale how heavy a bale is. There are too many factors to make sense to buy hay per bale in my opinion: softcore, hardcore, rotocut, dimension, type of grass or legumes, quality, etc. When you buy your feed per ton and with a feed analyze you will always know what you are paying for. To conclude, I would not be surprised that some of the cash crop farmers go back to producing hay with the hay price and rarity of the crop. For the last few years I’m sure hay was one of the most profitable crops per acre in this country. I wish you all a good hay season!

Le Foin, Le Nouvel Or?

L

Dale L. Marquart

Congratulations

Greta Reece Pearson was born January 21, 2019 at 4:37 a.m. weighing 8 lbs. 4 oz. and measuring 20 3/4 inches long. Proud parents are Duncan and Jessica Pearson and big brother Avry. Grandparents are Merrill and Bev Pearson, Pearson Farms, Calmar, AB.

Our Deepest Sympathies October 22, 1961 - June 9, 2019 Dale is survived by his loving family: his wife Denise; his sons Cody (Karey) and Jamie (Andrea); his daughter Sonya (Chad Bauman); his mother Erma Marquart; his brother Darcy (Cassie) Marquart; his sisters Julie (Winston) McFarland and Bonnie (Wallace) McComish; fatherin-law Cecil Lewis; brothers-in-law Randy (Marilyn) Lewis and Brent (Dyanna) Lewis; other family and many dear friends. Memorial Donations may be made to Our Lady of the Rosary Hospital Foundation - Palliative Care or Castor Minor Sports.

Our Deepest Sympathies Christoph was born December 31, 1939 in Rudolfingen, Switzerland. He graduated from the Agricultural School in Wulflingen and in the spring of 1962 went into farming by renting a farm in Reutlingen. That fall he married Berta Frick, whom he had met when she worked at a neighbour’s in Christoph’s hometown. In 1966 they decided to relocate into the mountains of the Domleschg Valley in Switzerland all the while still milking cows. The desire to own his own land led him to Canada. So in 1979 Christoph moved with his wife and five children to Hinchinbrooke, Quebec. There he owned not one, but two farms. In 1989 he sold the farm with the dairy cows to one of his sons and continued on the other farm with a cow/ calf operation and some cash crops. In the Simmental community he is known for his cattle under the Nossaterra prefix. He enjoyed going to sales and fraternizing with other Simmental breeders. But he also knew how to breed dairy cattle as he was the Breeder of the 1991 Royal Winter Fair Grand Champion Brown Swiss. On May 7, 2019 he was swiftly called home by his maker, without any suffering and a chance to say good bye. He will be sadly missed by his wife Berta, children Stefan, Irene, Susanne, Margrit and Markus as well as his relatives in Switzerland and countless friends.

Annual General Meeting

The SSA 49th Annual General Meeting was held June 26, 2019 in Eastend, SK. The day kicked off with a golf tournament at Streambank Golf Course in Eastend. Following some great shots, some not-so-good shots and visiting, the SSA Annual General Meeting took place. Following the meeting, members were treated to a delicious steak supper. The SSA Annual Meeting was held with a great turnout for the meeting. Kyle Ashworth let his name stand for re-election. Thank you to Lyle Forden and Jada Tyler for their time & dedication to the Sask Simmental Association as they retire from the SSA Board and we wish them well in the future. New directors Blaine Barnett and Riley Lafrentz were elected to the SSA Board - welcome to the team. Thank you to everyone that attended the meeting and golf day!
