CSA March Board and Committee Meetings Update

The 2023 run of bull sales are complete and they were again a success buoyed largely by stronger commercial cattle prices. Producers who bought bred females late last year appear to have made some good investments and will be selling into perhaps the strongest calf market we have ever seen. Long range weather forecasters are predicting a move from La Nina weather conditions to El Nino and they predict that we will be in for some better growing and pasture conditions, making abundant feed supplies in a larger area of Canada and the Northern U.S. Fingers are crossed for that to happen. Simmental genetics are enjoying widespread acceptance in many herds, but we need to be mindful that a little luck and some help from Mother Nature never hurts. During the bull sale run, Canadians Simmental Association directors, committee members traveled to Calgary for the CSA spring meetings, and also joined the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation (FCSF) directors for their board meeting. These meetings were held March 19th to 22nd in Calgary and it is always a busy time as we report on the progress made since our fall meetings, discuss new business and plan for our summer and fall events. The meetings began with the FCSF board meeting, and we discussed planning for the 2023 FCSF auction that will be held following the CSA Annual General Meeting Saturday August 5, 2023, in Ancaster, Ontario. Destiny Simmentals, Todd and

Karen Campbell and family will donate a bred heifer for this year’s auction, and we thank them for their generosity! The FCSF board of directors also decided to purchase a second carcass model that illustrates the various retail meat cuts found within an animal. With two of them now, the FCSF will be better able to keep up with the demand from youth, 4-H, and other groups for the original display. It is available free of charge and the user only pays for the shipping costs. To book one of them for your upcoming events contact Stacy Price at the CSA office.

On the CSA Promotion committee’s agenda was a review of the Simmental Country and Commercial Country magazines. We are always looking for ways to improve production and content in our magazines while being mindful of efficiency and the bottom line financially. The 2023 Simmental Award of Excellence (AOE) show recognition program was reviewed and we will be working with the Provincial Simmental Associations to streamline and improve the program in some key areas. Red Flame Ranch has agreed to sponsor the buckles for the Female and Male overall Grand Champions. Some new Simmental Ads are in the development stage and will be run beginning this fall. The World Simmental Fleckvieh Federation plans to date were an important topic of the Promotion Committee and CSA board meetings and Jennie Mutch will be providing solid leadership on the event. Canada last hosted the world’s Simmental breeders in 2006

4

and we will again do our best to maintain the standards expected of Canadian Simmental breeders and their great hospitality.

The Breed Improvement Committee (BIC) meeting then followed later Monday with discussion around various CSA programs relating to data collection, as well as computer and registry system processes, and ways we can provide better service to the CSA membership. The development of the Canadian Beef Improvement Network (CBIN) continues to move forwards with the CBBC board of directors guiding the process, along with the managers of several breed associations. Due to increased demand and usage Neogen lab turnaround times for parentage and DNA sample processing did slow somewhat through the first 3 months of 2023 however most results were received in time for the various bull sales. DNA rebates are being applied in two options to THE members and complete details are found in the last few editions of the CSA e-News and on our website.

The CSA Board of Director’s meeting wrapped up the three day session and included reporting and vetting of the previous day’s committee discussions and their recommendations. In addition to that, Katie Elmhirst and Crystal Fisk joined the meeting to provide the YCSA report which highlighted the plans they are making towards the 2023 T.E.A.M. Youth Leadership conference and the YCSA

National Classic in Ancaster, Ontario. To say that YCSA members across the country are excited to be back to live summers shows is an understatement, and Crystal Fisk is working with the National and Provincial YCSA boards in the planning process. A thorough discussion was had around the structure of the CSA’s Exclusive Use AI Sire program and in the end the CSA board decided to suspend the program for the time being. This will again be on the agenda at the CSA fall meetings.

The CSA will be distributing its 2023 member voting packages which this year will also include an option of submitting your vote electronically. There is one proposed by-law change being put forward by the CSA board in adding one seat for the Province of BC to the CSA board of directors. This will bring the number of directors to ten and will separate the joint seat shared by B.C. and the Atlantic Canada region. Watch the mail for your ballot package and remember to follow the instructions closely to avoid spoiling your ballots.

We encourage you to contact one of your CSA directors or myself for further information regarding anything mentioned in this article, and check www.simmental.com or our monthly e-News for updates. All the best with your spring seeding operations and may Mother Nature smile on us all throughout this growing season!

Neil Carson

ELECTED BY ACCLAMATION

For those of you that don’t know me my name is Neil Carson. Our farm name is Northern Light Simmentals in Rossburn Manitoba, which consists of 230 red, black and fullblood cows. We are a family run operation that have been a part of the Simmental Breed for as long as I can remember. I bought my first Simmental heifer when I was 8 years old and continue raising them today. We are very active in the Simmental breed, participating in many shows and hold our own bull sale in the spring and female sale in the fall. Our family enjoys volunteering and helping out with the Young Canadian Simmental Association as well as the 4-H clubs in the area whether it be judging or running clinics to help grow the livestock industry. I’ve served on many boards over the years including the Manitoba Simmental Association for 10 years with my last term as President. I will do my best to represent our breed and listen to my fellow breeders. I’m a very honest and opinionated individual in a board setting. I’m not afraid to speak up for what I believe in and I also believe when majority rules you have to get on board with whatever direction the board wants to go. Thank you in advance for supporting me again. I will do my best to represent the Breed.

BY ACCLAMATION

Jennie Mutch

I, along with my husband Stephen and our children Meredith & John, operate Mutch Farms in Earnscliffe, PEI. Since purchasing our first Simmental in 2009, we have been actively promoting our genetics at various shows and sales throughout the Maritimes and Quebec. We have made it a priority to participate in regional and national Simmental events, and our involvement has been very rewarding. Our children are just starting to exhibit their Simmental heifers through the YCSA program, and we love seeing them getting more involved, meeting new people, learning useful skills, and developing their confidence. For the past three years, I have had the privilege of serving as a director on the Canadian Simmental Association Board of Directors, and I have chaired the Promotions/ Marketing Committee for the past two years. During my tenure, I have been extremely impressed by our national board’s genuine commitment and thoughtful approach to the growth and progress of the Simmental breed. I look forward to my continued role serving a breed that is unparalleled in its diversity and strength.

I started into the Simmental world in the 90’s as a YCSA member after the purchase of my first Purebred Simmental heifer. Growing up with the Simmental breed has been a large part of my and my family’s life. I have a great respect for the cattle in the breed, although I feel the people are the greatest asset to our breed.

I have spent several years on the Saskatchewan Simmental Association Board representing fellow Saskatchewan Breeders. It has been great being involved in the growth and demand of the Simmental Breed here in Canada and around the world. Our breed is so diversified and has so much to offer the cattle industry. Myself along with my wife Stephanie and two sons, Seth and Carter operate McIntosh Livestock by Maymont, Saskatchewan. We run a mixed farming operation with grain and cattle. I look forward to representing all Simmental breeders for my 2nd term on the CSA board.

Breed IMPROVEMENT

Genomics and Accuracy – Why Does It Matter

EPD or Expected Progeny Differences are a measure of the relative differences between animal’s DNA. We have traditionally calculated EPD; or figured out what DNA an animal has; by recording the pedigree and performance of the animal and eventually recording this same information on offspring (who inherit their DNA from the parent). In the last several years, genomics has allowed us to look at much of the animal’s DNA directly and to include this information in the calculation of the EPD. This leads to the question of what impact genomics (DNA testing) has on the EPD of a tested animal.

DNA testing directly impacts accuracy or the measure of how much information we have on the animal’s DNA. As we obtain more information through pedigree, performance data or DNA, the accuracy will increase. The graph below is from non-parent animals in the IGS database and shows how average accuracy increases with the addition of pedigree, performance, and genomic data for 13 different traits. It is important to note that for traits like Stay ability, there are no performance records as an animal must be a parent, in order to have performance data included in the evaluation.

on the EPD or accuracy, as we already should have a very good idea of the DNA that animal carries. A way to think about DNA testing is that looking directly at an animal’s DNA is a shortcut to looking at performance of their offspring. The idea of a progeny equivalent or how many progeny records on average would it take to get the same information is shown in table 1.

Table 1. Progeny equivalency of a high density DNA test contribution to an animal’s EPD

You can see that the addition of performance data results in an accuracy increase for all traits, adding genotype (DNA) data results in a further increase and that pedigree, performance and genotype results in the most accurate prediction available, short of becoming a parent with progeny reported.

This is based on non-parents. If we were to do genomics on a proven sire with hundreds of progeny already reported, then the DNA would have little impact

Genomic testing directly impacts the accuracy of the EPD. The potential impact on the actual EPD will vary depending on the accuracy of the EPD to start with. For example, if we have that proven sire with hundreds of birth weight records on progeny, adding the equivalent of 25 new records with a DNA test is unlikely to have a significant impact. If that same test is done on a week old calf where only pedigree has been reported, then the potential change to the EPD could be quite high.

Potential Change of the EPD based on the accuracy is shown in table 2. Table 2. Potential change to EPD at varying levels of accuracy in the IGS evaluation.

From a visual perspective, if we took an animal with an average CE EPD of 7.9, the upper and lower lines on the figure show the range we could expect the EPD to change within as we gather more information. The upper “Max” line represents upside potential and the lower “Min” line shows downside risk. The vast majority of animals do not exhibit this level of change, but it is statistically possible.

and performance data we move him up to a much higher level of accuracy (Circled in the image) and can better ensure we are hitting our targeted goal. The probability of hitting our selection target of high weaning performance has greatly increased. This is shown by the 2 black lines showing the new upper and lower limit of the bull’s potential change. We may not hit a perfect bull’s eye, but we are at least in the centre rings.

Why Does Accuracy Matter?

Possible change, selection goals and population dynamics all come together in a discussion of why accuracy is important. Another way to state it in cowboy terms is “how important is it to pick the right bull?” or “what will happen if I pick the wrong bull?”

As a basic and hopefully understandable example, let’s look at a cattle population with a normal distribution and we are very serious about weaning weight and so we select a bull at the top 2% of the breed for weaning weight. In the CSA population that is a WW EPD of 96.0. When a bull only has pedigree information (accuracy of 10%) his WW EPD could potentially range from 81 all the way to 111. In other words, we may not be getting exactly the bull we think we are. By adding genomics and performance testing to the data, we can boost his accuracy to around 45% and reduce the potential range down to 88 to 105.

Again, our simple goal is to have weaning performance in the top 2% of the breed. This is represented in the image by the horizonal green line. We can see when we select a bull with a very low accuracy, there is potential that as we learn more about his genetics, he may shake out close to breed average, or potentially be even better than we had hoped, but there is significant risk his DNA may not be exactly what we expect. By DNA testing and using SNP

Adding accuracy is particularly valuable for traits that are expensive to measure such as feed intake or traits that take a long time to be expressed. For example, DNA testing can provide us with 15 progeny equivalents (the same as having 15 daughters in production) to help better inform us about longevity at a younger age. Imagine knowing more about longevity without waiting a decade. The potential improvement to the cowherd is significant.

DNA Testing Has Impact

When combined with pedigree and performance data, DNA information has significant potential to help us make better breeding decisions. Increasing accuracy basically means we are improving the odds of selecting the right sires. The ability to make faster progress also means that it is more important than ever to have an idea of where you want to go. If you have not taken advantage of CSA DNA programs and offers, now is certainly a great time to do so.

Vets ADVICE

Photosensitization (sunburn) in Farm Animals

With summer soon on us and exposure of animals to UV light cases of photosensitization crop up once in a while. In ruminants (cattle sheep and goats) there are many causes from ingestion of certain plant species to infectious causes such as liver flukes or leptospirosis. The bottom-line is that liver damage results in an accumulation of a by product in the skin leading to the susceptibility to sunburn. It will first show up in the thin haired or lightly pigmented area of the animal. So in Simmentals the white areas especially those exposed to UV light such as the head or outside of the legs I will go over clinical signs and treatment and then focus in on prevention. Affected animals usually don’t die but anyone that has been badly sunburnt knows the road to recovery is long. There is a definite economic toll on weight loss and failure to thrive. These animals can be very painful so animal welfare must be dealt with and we need to get them out of the sun. This discussion applies very well to horses as well and because horses often can have white socks, or other white areas it can be very deleterious to them as well.

Veterinarians may be confronted with only one or several cases at the same time. Depending on which areas are affected there could be lameness if involving the feet or weight loss if the mouth/muzzle and udder/scrotum or vulval area is involved. Initially it may take close examination to see that the skin may be swollen and sloughing in the white areas. This may have been pretty insidious to start with and with dark pigmented cattle (red especially) we see clinical signs more revolving around the mouth or lightly colored udders or scrotums or the vulval area. It may initially start as being uncomfortable, strange gait or being itchy. Areas exposed to lots of sunshine and that are thin haired is where we concentrate looking. Even the whites of the eyes can be involved. Some pastures especially are very open so not a lot of access to good shade trees, sheds, porosity fences or really anywhere where shade is possible the cattle will seek out. That is why in severe cases they need to get in the shade and stay there often for long periods. Some are delegated to access to a barn or open-faced shed for most of the summer to speed up recovery if that’s possible. With the hotter summer and the apparent global warming photosensitization cases increase.

Severely affected cattle may need to be pulled and treated with supportive treatment. Supportive treatment may involve fluids if dehydrated and commonly may involve NSAIDs as the open wounds can be very painful if you get one case have a very close look at the other cattle especially focusing in on the white areas.

One of the common plants that affect horses is white clover and I have seen numerous horses affected just in the white areas that needed to be pulled off treated and methods used to get other species of plants introduced otherwise it might be hard to use that pasture in the summer for horses.

With photosensitization you have all the other complications that come with open wounds from skin sloughing off such as fly strike and bacterial infections. Just like a human burn patient there is loss of fluids so you and your veterinarian must react to the severity of the case. Hydrotherapy to ointments to covering the wound if possible, to covering with antibiotics for secondary bacterial infections all have been used in certain cases. I guess this is another benefit for the cattle herd being dominantly black or red but breeds such as Charolais being mostly all white Herefords (RWF) and Holsteins being predominantly white will show the effects early as well. I have always wondered if the insult causes damage to the liver causing this susceptibility to sunburn even the

dark cattle could be affected. The white areas are the first to indicate there is a problem. My goal from a herd health perspective is try to determine what is causing this liver issue and then try and prevent it for the next sunny season. Remember that even in overcast days the UV light is strong so burning is still a possibility. In talking to others another common denominator seems to be when we have a wetter spring with lush growth and time frame of May and June.

When looking for the cause we must consider various plants and a few infectious processes. Keeping in mind anything that causes liver damage could lead to this susceptibility to sunburn. From plants we are talking white or alsike clover, St John’s wort, hogweed have been incriminated if they are in your area. Any plants that produce the pyrrolizidine alkaloids that can cause liver damage among other things are potential such as tansy ragwort and to a lesser extent common tansy are potentials. Grasses such as perennial rye grass, buckwheat or trefoil are also incriminated. Mycotoxins produced in certain feeds or blue green algae are also potentials. Infectious causes are leptospirosis and even liver flukes if enough liver damage is caused by the flukes. If you do encounter photosensitization treat the clinical cases remove them from the pasture and try and determine what is the inciting causes. Plant control or controlled grazing at the times of year when the UV light is highest may also help. Since it is hit and miss and only affects certain animals it may do with their grazing patterns or individual susceptibility. Most severely affected animals are usually culled. Again, horses and the ruminants seem most susceptible and in certain years growth conditions combined with different grazing conditions may make livestock much more susceptible. It we can determine if a plant species is the cause, eliminating it or avoiding grazing at the susceptible times of May and June are distinct possibilities.

Red bull only had the burning essentially in the whites of the eyes. This case was so bad, a couple Char bulls needed to be euthanized as the skin sloughing was profound.

CANADA

Hello everyone! My name is Mackenzie Skeels and I am the new Miss Rodeo Canada. Starting off, here is a little bit about me, I am the fourth generation growing up on our family’s farm, Anchor D Simmentals just outside of Rimbey. My first cow was given to me, and from there I have bought, traded, and raised cattle expanding my herd to 35 head. Through my leadership roles of 12 years of 4H and the Young Canadian Simmental Association (YCSA), I began my journey of promoting the western way of life.

I have had the honour of winning five national aggregate titles with the YCSA and competed in the American Junior Simmental Association shows in 2016 and 2018 as one of the Canadian representatives. Competing in regional level public speaking with 4H and being selected to attend the 2018, 4H Canadian Citizenship Congress in Ottawa at Parliament. In 2017, I was crowned the Rimbey Rodeo Queen, 2019/2020 Sundre Rodeo Queen and Miss Ponoka Stampede 2022 & lastly just recently Miss Rodeo Canada 2023 last November at the Canadian Finals Rodeo.

With my Media Studies and Professional Communications diploma, and current job at Direct Livestock Marketing Systems, I am planning to utilize the skills I have developed to further my passion and involvement in the rodeo and agriculture industry. I plan on continuing to bridge the gap between urban and rural in various ways including educating people on where their food comes from. Bringing people back to their western roots while connecting them to the original extreme sport of rodeo. I am so honored

to represent Canadian Professional Rodeo on a National and International level as Miss Rodeo Canada 2023 and cannot wait to keep you all up to date on my journeys through the year.

My official duties of Miss Rodeo Canada started off in December of 2022 where I had the opportunity to attend National Western Agribition and the Maple Leaf Finals in Regina. This was a very special way for me to start off my year as I have gone to this event before because of the cattle industry so it was so wonderful to see so many familiar faces. My favorite part of Agribition is the diversity of all the events that are happening during the week. From the livestock shows, stock dog competition to the rodeo, people from all different walks of life and the agriculture industry come together as one to be a part of this outstanding production. After my week in Regina, I took a plane and made my way to Las Vegas for the National Finals Rodeo to cheer on our Canadian athletes both four legged and two legged.

In the month of January, I started off the month internationally as I attended the Dallas market. At the market I was able to meet up with some of my amazing sponsors such as Dan Post, Wrangler, and Montana Silversmiths. During my time in Texas, I also had the opportunity of being interviewed on the Cowboy Channel in Fort Worth, which was a cool experience!

From there I headed to Denver Colorado for the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo and was able to hold our nation's flag with pride on Canada night. In addition, during the stock show I helped at The Remarkable Roundup and Exceptional Rodeo and even got to meet Temple Grandin. We then toured the Colorado Saddlery and witnessed first-hand how a flag boot is made.

19

From there I was honored to be a part of the Grand Champion Steer drive, and to witness such hard-working youth be rewarded for their dedication towards their livestock. Later on in my week in Colorado, I headed to Steamboat for the cowboy downhill ski race. Mustering up all the courage that I had, I decided to take the jump during the race, which was worth it considering the hilarious pictures I got. After the stock show my international travels for this month ended as I headed back up north to home.

Entering the shortest month of the year it was one that did not disappoint! I started off by attending the Sundre Trappers banquet. This is an event that I have had the opportunity to go to a few times. Flashback to when I was Miss Rodeo Sundre 2019 I had a mouse who had made himself at home in my car. During this banquet in 2020 I got a crash course of how to set traps to catch a mouse. By the end of the evening we were in luck, Mickey was captured. After I caught my little friend I bravely got a nice gentleman to empty my trap. Moral of the story is I think I will leave it up to the professionals, but I am glad that I have learned the life skill of how to set a mousetrap.

home, I made a stop at Ponoka for the Hall of Fame concert and got to listen to local superstar Shalaine Stebner. As this short but action-packed month comes to a close, I am so thankful for all of the wonderful people I met, and all of the core memories that were made.

I Look forward to continuing to update you all thought my year as Miss Rodeo Canada, so be sure to tune into the next Simmental Country issue! With Gratitude, Mackenzie

Skeels

From there my travels went international as I made my way to Kissimmee, Florida for the Silver Spurs Rodeo! During my time down in the sunshine state we had the opportunity to visit 10 schools and educate them about rodeo. I always love being a part of sharing my knowledge and love of our incredible sport to the next generation. In addition, I got to be a part of the exceptional rodeo and was able to help my partner experience livestock and other fun activities like roping and barrel racing. It was so cool seeing Florida from a local’s perspective! One evening we went blueberry picking. However, I am not much of a blueberry picker, more of a constant blueberry eater so when the other queens came back with their cups full of blueberries, I had a total of two left in my cup, but my stomach was full. I am happy to report that they were very good. While in Florida I experienced the Everglades on an airboat ride at Wild Florida, soaked up some much needed sunshine at the beach, went hog hunting, and I even attempted facing my fear of snakes at Gatorland. Update if you have not seen the Facebook and Instagram reel on my social media pages, I am still terrified, and I think I will stick to nonscaly creatures.

Once I made it back to Canada, I was pleasantly surprised by Janine’s Custom Creations new Peavey Mart Vest she made for me! I am so excited to be able to wear it throughout this year. I then attended the Calgary skijoring event which is my very first skijoring event I have ever been to, and it was truly incredible all the talent and skill those competitors have. As I made my way

Spring is finally here and the busy season on our farms and ranches is upon us – whether it’s calving or getting crops into the ground. There’s something about spring that brings a sense of optimism and the feeling of a fresh start. While you are busy tending to spring preparations, the Board and staff at the Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) are keeping a pulse on the policy files that may impact the sustainability of our sector and our ability to grow our beef exports. For most of 2023, the trade file has kept us busy with issues that can threaten our ability to export Canadian beef. Exports of Canadian beef bring significant added value to our industry and cattle producers, and the trade file continued to be the focus of many discussions at our Annual General Meeting (AGM). With over 50 per cent of Canadian beef heading for international markets, it’s important that policy decisions here at home – and by our key trade partners – provide benefit to producers, the broader industry, and consumers in each country. We are working hard to ensure that interests of beef producers are taken into consideration during these policy discussions and trade negotiations. We continue to monitor Bill C-282: An Act to amend the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Act (supply management), which proposes to take supply-managed sectors off the table during trade talks. We are advocating against Bill C-282 with our partners, including the Canadian Agri-Food Trade Alliance (CAFTA) and appeared before the House of Commons Standing Committee on International Trade to oppose the bill. To emphasize the potential impacts of Bill C-282, we are sharing personal stories on social media and in meetings with elected officials of the added value that exports bring to Canadian beef farms and ranches. We invite all producers to bring up their concerns with Bill C-282 with their respective Member of Parliament and to share their stories on social media.

Another key trade file we have been following with interest is the trade negotiations with the United Kingdom (UK). In late March, CCA was disappointed to see the UK’s accession into the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for TransPacific Partnership (CPTPP) since it does not achieve viable access for Canadian beef into the UK. The CPTPP negotiations with the UK were an opportunity for Canada to rectify the significant disadvantages in market access and non-tariff barriers Canadian beef producers face in this market. However, Canada supported the UK’s accession without resolving these issues. The full details of the deal are still unavailable, but CCA is aware of other member countries of the CPTPP achieving unlimited beef access in their bilateral agreements with the UK while similar access for Canadian beef is off the table. This is a frustrating development for Canada’s beef producers and CCA will continue to advocate for these

challenges to be addressed during the Canada-UK bilateral negotiations.

The UK’s accession to CPTPP requires ratification by the Canadian Parliament. Should a ratification bill be brought forward to Parliament, CCA will approach all Parliamentarians to defeat this bill. We have always advocated for free and open trade and this deal only further disadvantages Canadian beef producers.

However, it has not been all negative news on the trade front. Late March saw Japan open its borders to Canadian processed beef after 20 years. This announcement marks the removal of the final BSE-era restrictions in Japan following Canada’s attainment of BSE-negligible risk status by the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) in 2021. Japan’s decision to grant full market access to Canadian beef may signal other countries in the ASEAN region to follow suit. This is good news for Canadian cattle producers as the Indo-Pacific region holds the greatest potential for beef export diversification.

Federal Budget Day 2023 also saw good news for the Canadian beef industry with Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Chrystia Freeland announcing an investment of $57.5 million over five years to develop emergency response plans and establish the vaccine bank. CCA has advocated tirelessly over the last number of years for a federally funded FMD vaccine bank and was heightened as an urgent advocacy priority in 2022. With the threat of FMD remaining high given the recent outbreaks in Asian and African markets, the establishment of this vaccine bank is critical and helps provide our industry the necessary insurance to protect Canada’s export markets. We appreciate the Government listening to our concerns and understanding the critical need to put emergency preparedness plans in place. While we hope we never need to use the FMD vaccine bank, we know it is a critical piece in foreign animal disease emergency preparedness.

With all the activity on the trade front – there wasn’t much time to discuss the outcomes of CCA AGM in this column either. I’d like to send congratulations to Tyler Fulton, who was elected as CCA’s Vice President in late March. I look forward to working with him and our board members to advance the priorities that were set at our AGM for the next year. We’ve made good and important strides over the last year, and there is still much work to be done.

CoraLee & Lee Stilborn of Pheasantdale Cattle Company are happy to announce the birth of their daughter Hadley Marie Stilborn, born on January 25, 2023 at the Regina General Hospital at 4lbs, 8oz and 17 ¼ inches long. She is loved by her Grandparents Garth & Audrey Fisk of Silvercreek Simmentals and Lionel & Pat Stilborn also of Pheasantdale Cattle Company along with her Uncle Austin and Aunt Jennifer Fisk of Fisk Cattle Company.

Jack Lewis Inducted Into The Agriculture Hall Of Fame

Jack Lewis honoured for pioneering new farming techniques for seed potato production and founding the potato growers’ co-operative.

“Our dad would have been extremely proud and honoured to be included in the 2022 Alberta Agriculture Hall of Fame, and receiving this prestigious award,” says Sandy Lewis, daughter of the late Jack Lewis. “However, he would have been very surprised as well. I can imagine his words would be ‘really, me? I don’t know about that’ or words to that effect. A grateful hearty laugh would then follow, I am sure. Family. Farming. Friends. Three words we feel dad was all about. Farming was always such a huge passion of dad’s his entire life. It’s really hard to put in words his love for agriculture.” Lewis, who was inducted posthumously, was an innovative agricultural producer, a leader in the community, and a generous supporter of agricultural education. Lewis expanded the farm his parents established to over 4,000 acres of grains, oilseeds, and seed potatoes; and 1000 head of Simmental and Angus cattle at the time of his death in 2020.

Congratulationse!

The family-owned Lewis Farms was a pioneer in new farming techniques for seed potato production, including importing specialized equipment from Europe to improve production and quality. He was also a founding member of Edmonton Potato Growers, which was established in 1960.

Along with other visionaries, Lewis understood that a co-operative model of marketing potatoes and other vegetables would increase efficiency and profitability for members. Edmonton Potato Growers is now one of the most respected and efficient potato marketing groups in North America, with export markets including Canada, the U.S., Mexico, Russia, Thailand, India, and China.

An influential advocate for the Alberta seed potato industry, for decades Lewis was an active and proud member of the Alberta Potato Commission (now Potato Growers of Alberta), and sat as a director for 4 years, and chairman for 2 of those, in the early 1980s. He worked hard to unite seed, table and process potato growers across the province.

Lewis also helped establish Lewis Farms as a Canadian leader in the breeding and production of Simmental cattle. With his children, and now grandchildren, they grew the Simmental herd to a successful purebred operation, selling an average of 300 purebred bulls per year at their annual on-farm production sale. In 2011, Lewis Farms was inducted into the Canadian Simmental Association Hall of Fame for their contributions to the industry.

Lewis saw the importance of supporting, in a tangible way, the advancement of agricultural education. He established scholarships for agriculture students at Lakeland Colleges and the University of Alberta, mentored a number of international students through the International Agricultural Exchange Association, and with the help of his wife, helped furnish Alumni House at the Lakeland Vermilion campus. He also volunteered on the Lakeland College leadership team for its capital fundraising campaign, which raised more than $13 million, exceeding the $10 million goal. Lakeland’s data lab in the Agriculture Technology Centre is named the Lewis Farms Data Lab in honour of Lewis and his family. He was also the first person ever inducted into the college’s Alumni Wall of Distinction, and also received the Alumni Honour Award from the University of Alberta. Lewis was generous with his time and had a fundamental belief of always giving back to his community, whether he was hauling 4-H steers to the local achievement day, or volunteering at the many Rotary events. He was also supportive of his Indigenous neighbours on the Enoch Cree Nation in their endeavours to diversify economic opportunities and spent many hours mentoring members of the Nation as they learned large-scale potato production.

Jack Lewis joins Bruce Beattie and Simone Demers-Collins as the 2022 inductees into the Alberta Agriculture Hall of Fame.
