2021 Proposed By-law Changes

ince arriving in Canada in 1967, the Simmental breed has been a driver of change for the Canadian Beef industry. Many cattlemen of the 1960’s were not satisfied with the British based genetics available to them and European genetics of several breeds were imported to change the North American beef herd. As a result, some breed associations of the day discussed opening their herd-books to facilitate incorporating some of the new genetics. None of the mainstream breed associations made that change however and new associations were formed like the Canadian Simmental Association (CSA). Upon its formation the CSA structured its by-laws and an upgrade table that has had several changes made to them over the last 53 years in an attempt to remain current and to better provide service to CSA members and their customers. While the original bylaws focused on upgrading from a Fullblood or Purebred male this was later changed to recognize the Simmental female as an equal contributor in the upgrading process. One inequity that has been recognized for some time in the current upgrade table is a result of the difference in purebred status which recognizes a 7/8 female as a purebred while a 7/8 male is not. Because of this difference, the CSA upgrade table currently recognizes certain matings differently based solely on the gender of the parent. As a result, the Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) Board of Directors is proposing amendments to its by-laws that would recognize a 7/8 male as a Purebred Simmental, rather than the current requirement of 15/16 for a Simmental male to attain Purebred status. This change has been discussed for several years at the CSA board level as a result of requests from CSA members asking that this change be made. To add context to the discussion it is important to highlight some of the history and background that has guided the CSA to this point. Over the last 53 years, the CSA has changed the upgrade table in its by-laws several times. • 1970: the upgrade table was added to by-laws • 2004-06: Maternal (reverse) Upgrading was approved • 2008-09: Fullbloods were officially recognized in the upgrade table • 2013-14: Registered Sires of another breed were added to the upgrade table and upgrading beyond the fraction of the sire was approved In 2021 the CSA Board of directors is proposing a by-law change that would recognize a 7/8 Simmental male as a Purebred. This would mirror the 7/8 requirement to attain Purebred status for a female. This amendment would recognize the genetic contribution of 7/8 males at an equal level to 7/8 females which have been recognized

as purebreds since 1970. It is important to recognize that this change in no way affects the Canadian Simmental Fullblood registry nor does it make any change to Fullblood status. While there have been comments circulating that this change is not consistent with the Animal Pedigree Act, the fact of the matter is that there are other Canadian beef breed associations that already recognize both 7/8 males and females as Purebreds so that precedent has been set. The change of purebred status would also facilitate the amendment to the CSA upgrade table that would recognize the progeny born from the mating of a 7/8 Simmental male to a ½ Simmental female as a ¾ blood calf. That revision to the CSA upgrade table was originally part of the proposed by-law and upgrading table changes which received unanimous support through a CSA membership vote held at its 2013 Annual General Meeting. While all the other revisions to the upgrading table were accepted by Agriculture and Agrifood Canada (AAFC), this specific mating outcome was not approved and the CSA is currently required to recognize the calves from this mating as a 1/2 blood animal. A 7/8 Simmental female mated to a ½ blood male is however recognized as a ¾ blood calf with the reasoning that a 7/8 female is recognized as a Purebred while as stated above, a 7/8 male is not. If the proposed by-law amendments are approved, Purebred 15/16 status would continue to be calculated to identify that level of purity, as well as to facilitate the process of developing a 7/8 Purebred Simmental from a recorded ¾ blood parent. This addresses concerns of changes possibly affecting export markets to other countries. It is also very important to note that this change would not result in the Canadian Simmental upgrade table being the same as the American Simmental upgrade table as the American table has some distinct differences, including recognizing Simmental animals at less than 1/2 blood status. 2/3 majority of the votes received at the CSA office is required to move to the step of sending the revisions to AAFC for final approval from the Federal Minister of Agriculture. The CSA will be mailing out ballots this month to all active CSA members over the age of eighteen in order to vote on the 2021 proposed by-law changes. Also in the packages will be ballots to vote on the two available positions from Alberta to the CSA board of directors. All CSA members are eligible to vote for the Alberta directors. Please ensure that you follow the voting package instructions and I encourage you to contact one of your CSA directors or myself if you have any questions regarding anything mentioned in this article. Be sure to vote and best of luck with your spring planting operations!

Breed Improvement

Bouncing Numbers

B

y the time this hits the press a lot of calves will be on the ground in CSA member herds and a lot of breeding decisions will be more than finalized. While numbers are certainly not the only or perhaps even the main consideration in a breeding program, EPD do provide a useful tool for comparing animals for traits that we have information available on. Remember, EPD use pedigree, DNA and phenotypic information to compare the DNA that seedstock contain for specific traits. Historically the traits we have provided EPD for have been primarily growth, but as we add data, improve science and adapt performance programs, we continue to get better and better numbers on other important traits, such as mature size, maintenance requirements and cow longevity. One of the complaints often made about EPD is that they change. While this can certainly be true as we gather more information on an animal’s genetic makeup, sometimes these bounces can also be caused by the data that is submitted by a member. For fertility and longevity traits it is vitally important that calves are reported for every cow in the herd. Even if it was not possible to weigh or even tag a calf, it matters to that cow’s record to know that she produced and/or weaned a calf in a given year. While our models can account for some selective reporting, it is still not as good as getting complete information. Another challenge that can cause EPD to bounce is failing to report all calves at weaning and at yearling. Often we get busy, especially over the fall season, or perhaps we castrate some bull calves early and don’t want to worry about recording them. It is still extremely important to obtain a weight on those calves where possible. Let’s walk through a quick example with three cows from the same herd. The herd weighs all calves at weaning but does not take yearling weights on the heifers.

calf before she ever has a progeny with a yearling weight or post weaning gain record. Since she had the heaviest bull calf in Year 5, we might see her EPD for YW increase. It does not mean the EPD was wrong previously, we just did not have any progeny information about post-weaning gain. If the cow was home raised and was not weighed as a yearling, it is likely she did not have a post—weaning gain record of her own to help inform us either. Cow B has three progeny records by her third calf, but it is difficult to compare where she fits, relative to other cows in the herd, when those cows keep popping in and out of the record set. Cow A initially appears to have strong yearling weight performance. She drops out of the record books for a couple of years because she had heifer calves and then shows up well below average in Year 5. In this case her YW EPD might drop. If we had weighed heifers, we may have determined more rapidly and accurately what her EPD should have been. In the above example, we chose yearling weight as the trait reported, but if the herd chose not to report weaning weights on heifers (or at least a weaning code), it could appear as though Cow C did not successfully wean a calf for the first four years of her productive life. This would impact not only her growth EPD and that of future calves, but also potentially fertility evaluation numbers. There is a temptation to report on “the good ones” and not the rest, however this can also cause future bounciness in EPD. Not reporting the tail end of the calves will often fail to give proper credit to calves that are the superior performers. This gains further complexity when we start looking at maternal traits and trying to assess whether a cow did not wean a calf or it was simply unreported. If we were to look at a set of weaning weight on bull calves we might see what can happen.

Measuring and reporting all the cattle is the best way to give true credit to the genetics that we are breeding and trying to objectively assess. As we wind up calving and breeding and progress through the summer, it is useful to plan ahead to ensure that you are collecting and reporting as much data as possible from calving, through weaning and yearling. Complete recording greatly helps inform the resulting EPD on calves and your cowherd and can help reduce bounciness in your EPD.

Reporting on the additional two bulls resulted in a significant upward move on the top bulls. If you look closely, none of the data on bulls A, B or C was changed in any way. We just reported on the rest of the group.

Canadian Simmental Association

2021 Board of Directors Election A total of three Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) director positions are open in two regions for the upcoming 2021 CSA Annual General Meeting (AGM). CSA Director from Quebec, Scott Matthews, elected by acclamation for his first term. In the region of Alberta, two positions are open with three CSA members running for election. Nominees are, Byron Johnson, Ben Farrant and Ryan Cook.

Nominees Quebec --- Scott Matthews --- Elected by Acclamation Dear Canadian Simmental Association Board of Directors, My name is Scott Matthews of Canton de Hatley, Quebec and I would like to submit my name as a candidate for a position on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Simmental Association. For the past several years this position has been held by Francis Gagnon, and I would like to thank him for his dedication to the breed and its members. Growing up in the Simmental family has led to many opportunities and only confirmed my passion for the breed, its members, and the leadership that is fostered within the Board of Directors. From my past experiences on provincial and national YCS Board of Directors, the education and connections made, have helped lead me to further involvement in the Ontario Simmental and Quebec Simmental Provincial Associations. During these tenures, I have had the privilege in participating in the coordination of National Annual General Meetings for the CSA, National YCSA Classic events and more recently my involvement in the CSA’s Breed Improvement Committee and Friends of Canadian Simmental Association. My wife Emily and I are both proud to be raising our kids with involvement in agriculture and with Simmental cattle as a passion here at home. Although a small herd, the interest is strong and the cattle are becoming part of our kids interests; which is fun to help grow! It will come with time that they realize the cattle are one thing, the history is important, but the great people of our breed are the backbone. If selected as a successful candidate to the Board of Directors of the Canadian Simmental Association, I will continue to do my best to help bridge the gap between our provincial members and the CSA, offer input on key decisions and work with our Board to continue building a strong footprint for our association. Please accept my nomination for the Board of Directors of the Canadian Simmental Association.

Scott

Nominated by Yves Gagnon and The Quebec Simmental Association 8 SC Spring 2021.indd 8

Election Timeline Voting ballots will be mailed by April 23 to all active CSA and YCSA members 18 years of age or over. Members must return their completed ballot to the CSA by mail postmarked no later than May 25, 2021.

Alberta --- Byron Johnson My family and I own Johnson Ranching in Amisk, Alberta and it has been a pleasure sitting as your representative on the CSA board the last three years. During that time, I have sat on the breed improvement committee as well, where we have been working on keeping the Canadian Simmental industry leaders amongst all the other breeds as the cattle industry evolves. I am really looking forward to continuing on as your CSA director for another term. Nominated by The Alberta Simmental Association

Byron Alberta --- Ben Farrant My wife Kassandra and I own and operate Red Top Livestock near Red Deer, Alberta. We farm alongside my parents who operate a commercial herd, but the two herds are treated as one management group. Kassandra has been in the Simmental industry all her life and was the reason we elected to get involved in this great breed. As a newer member to the Simmental breed it is overwhelming with the openness and support of this breed community. It is something that our breed should be proud of and continually strive for. Over the past five years I have been representing fellow Alberta Breeders on the Alberta Simmental Association Board. The experience gained from being on this board has been extremely educational and rewarding to be a part of. In the past few years working directing alongside the Alberta Young Canadian Simmental Association, it makes me excited where our breed is headed. With the Simmental breed having a diversified and quality product to offer the industry combined with the enthusiastic young breeders coming up the future looks bright for Simmental. I plan to represent and serve my fellow breeders to the best of my ability, continuing building upon the strong foundation already set forth by those that have come before us. Nominated by The Alberta Simmental Association

Hello for those that don’t know me here is a brief history. I, along with my family, operate Trendsetter Livestock located at Big Valley. We run all spectrums of Simmentals; Red, Black, Fullblood and Commercial. Regardless of colour or make up, we are all part of the Simmental success. I have been involved with Simmentals all my life and have had the opportunity to work for some great programs. I enjoyed my time with Simmental Country working with the breeders and promoting this great product our breed is known for providing. Since moving on from Simmental Country we have been focusing on expanding our own operation. I have a vast knowledge of the Simmental breed along with the commercial sector therefore would like to become an asset to the CSA board. Being a prior ASA director only strengthens my understanding of our breed and the role we play in the future. I look forward to chatting with and discussing any new ideas that members have, as well as presenting them to the board in a professional manner. Thank you for considering me to represent you on the CSA board. Nominated by Maureen Mappin Smith 9

D

Canadian Simmental Association 2021 Proposed By-law Changes The Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) Board of Directors is proposing amendments to its by-laws that would recognize a 7/8 male as a Purebred Simmental rather than the current requirement of 15/16 for a Simmental male to attain Purebred status. This change has been discussed for numerous years at the CSA board level as a result of requests from CSA members. Some of the reasons for this change are: • To more accurately recognize the genetic contribution of 7/8 males at an equal level to 7/8 females which have been recognized as Purebreds since 1970. • The change of Purebred status would also facilitate the amendment to the CSA upgrade table and recognize the progeny born from the mating of a 7/8 Simmental male to a ½ Simmental female as a ¾ blood calf. • This was originally part of the 2013 by-law and upgrading table changes that received unanimous support through a CSA membership vote held at its Annual General Meeting. • Purebred 15/16 status would continue to be calculated for those who require to identify that level of purity, as well as to facilitate the process of developing a 7/8 Purebred Simmental from a recorded ¾ blood parent. • This addresses the concern of this change possibly affecting export markets to other countries. It is important to note that: • This change would not result in the Canadian Simmental upgrade table being the same as the American Simmental upgrade table as the American table has some distinct differences, including recognizing Simmental animals at less than ½ blood status. • These changes will be voted on by active CSA members who are in good standing through a mail-in ballot process in the spring of 2021. • Support by a 2/3 majority of the vote is required to move to the step of sending the revisions to AAFC for final approval from the Federal Minister of Agriculture. • This change in no way affects the Canadian Simmental Fullblood registry nor does it any way make any changes to Fullblood status. We are confident that these by-law changes will influence the Simmental breed in Canada in a positive way as we facilitate growth for our members and will allow us to continue the Simmental breed’s contributions to the improvement of the Canadian beef cattle herd.

Vet’s Advice

By Roy Lewis, DVM

Lapses in Vaccination Programs

W

e must as veterinarians and producers be constantly reviewing our vaccination protocols to check for lapses in either booster shot administration, missing certain antigens in our vaccines, and new or emerging diseases for which there are vaccines. Cattle being transported into other areas where other diseases are more prevalent have often been the cause of outbreaks to such things as redwater disease or anthrax being two good examples. With more and more pressure to use fewer antimicrobials, there is a greater need to vaccinate as maximally as possible in non-stressed cattle so the biggest protection against disease challenge is garnered. Vaccination will not ever be able to prevent everything but it definitely can get the majority of the population immunized to reduce outbreak situations. Pharmaceutical companies are all developing more comprehensive vaccines to keep most vaccine shots down to two or three at the very most. More and more intranasal vaccines are being developed which can eliminate needling. Intranasal vaccines are becoming more broader spectrum. There are even oral vaccines on the market, so producers have a vast repertoire of choices. This can sometimes make it difficult and confusing to make a choice and depending on our management level groups of cattle can get missed. Every time you process cattle one needs to consider if there are any vaccines I am missing or that need a booster. Are the vaccines stored properly, given properly? Veterinarians need to be consistent at the clinic level in vaccine suggestions otherwise further confusion ensues. Your herd veterinarian knows your herd the best so depending on history and disease challenges in the past recommendations may vary slightly from herd to herd. I like to use the concept of the core vaccines given pretty much across Canada. Other more specific vaccines or time intervals for vaccines will vary depending on when the disease challenge comes and geographically what unusual is in the specific area. New advancements and health nutrition and parasite status Core vaccines recognized by most veterinarians and producers I would say is as follows. The five-way viral vaccines (IBR, PI3, BRSV, and BVD types one and two). These are given to the calves often along with at least Mannheimia and often Pasteurella as the pneumonia preventing vaccine. These often come together in one shot. These vaccines are often given

at two to three months of age and again at or ideally before weaning. If producers have pneumonic issues in calves prior to the two to three months that is where commonly the viral and bacterial intranasal vaccines are given. The intranasal vaccines are also finding a place on entry to the feedlot where quick immunity is paramount. Later in the feedlot finishing period, many veterinarians recommend boostering with IBR specifically at reimplant time. This helps prevent the severe cases of pneumonia and tracheitis IBR can cause late in the finishing period. These are examples of where a respiratory protection gap is most commonly noted. The five-way viral component is given as a follow-up yearly to the mature cattle and heifers ideally before breeding to prevent reproductive diseases. In some dairy and beef herds especially in the east if pneumonia has been a problem in mature cattle Mannheimia and Pasteurella can be added to the mix. Histophilus is the other agent causing pneumonia, arthritis, heart and brain issues so it is often combined with the clostridial vaccines in one needle. Some veterinarians have removed it because they weren’t seeing any cases or felt were still seeing brain issues. The fact is the vaccine has worked well for decades and we don’t see cases because we do vaccinate. There are many other causes of brain disease so one must get a proper diagnosis before jumping to conclusions. It is one disease that starts with stress so preconditioning programs are the one way to significantly prevent cases. Vaccination upon entry to the feedlot is often too late for cases initiated at weaning. This is where reliance on the cow-calf producer for giving the priming shots for histophilus BVD and others can avert big problems in the feedlot. With the purebred herds where preimmunization ahead of weaning is a wise decision and weaning as stress-free as possible. Clostridial disease is another that still occurs in outbreak form in unvaccinated cattle or some of the multivalent vaccines lack tetanus, clostridium hemolyticum (redwater), or clostridium sordelli. Lots have been written about clostridial disease so will say nothing more. There is no excuse for not using this vaccine. If worried about lumps which rarely happen vaccinate show cattle on the non-show side (left ) and can even hide the vaccine behind the elbow. They are more sensitive here but gives you an option. Lumps are a little more common with clostridial vaccines.

18 SC Spring 2021.indd 18

4/28/2021 11:00:49 AM

Scour vaccines one must carefully follow which vaccine is given as time before calving is critical and with some protection wanes after about 90 days so later calving cows may need to be given a booster vaccine. I think it is imperative especially for the larger herds to get vaccinated. If we can prevent that first case of scours from developing we avoid contamination of the calving grounds and an outbreak. Remember the other species on your farms and ranches. The good working dogs and barn cats all have preventable diseases for which there is a vaccination. This includes distemper, parvo, and rabies for dogs among others. Distemper and rabies for cats as well as influenza, rhino, and tetanus as well as a few neurological diseases for horses. Again, your herd veterinarian can best advise what vaccines for all these other species on your farm. Different areas of the country may have other vaccinations necessary such as leptospirosis, vibriosis, anthrax, and rabies for livestock in some areas. Certain herds may need to vaccinate for pinkeye, footrot, or coronavirus depending on risk levels. We

are fortunate in Canada to be free of diseases like brucellosis or foot and mouth where vaccines are available but because we are free are unnecessary or not allowed. Again no vaccines are 100% but clostridials are close and with other vaccines herd immunity is considered when we get 80% protectivity. Many things confound the ability of vaccination to give good immunity. That subject has been written about many a time, but we always want to look after nutrition, parasites, minimize stress plus store, handle, and administer vaccines properly to maximize protection. Always ask about new developments or ways to increase immunity in the herd. Pharma companies are always adding new vaccine antigens to make your life easier. Together good vaccination strategies will go a long way to minimize these preventable diseases on our cow-calf, feedlot and purebred operations. This COVID19 crisis has shown the world the power and protective capability of vaccine farm out-weigh treatment. This is no different with our cattle operations and the critical vaccines that keep our herds health

Bob Lowe CCA President

We have certainly had a busy spring so far at the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) and our industry. But I’m not complaining. We made progress to further support the financial stability of ranchers, strengthen and grow our exports, and educate youth about Canadian beef. At the CCA Annual General Meeting held in March, our virtual meeting format was well received, and much was accomplished, although I must say I did miss the opportunity to see everyone in person. Hopefully, we will be able to meet face-to-face next year. I am honored to continue to serve as CCA President alongside Reg Schellenberg as Vice President for another year. I am pleased to welcome our new members to the CCA Board including Linda Allison (BC), George L’Heureux (AB), Kelly SmithFraser (AB) and Matthew Atkinson (MB). I know they will be a great addition to the Board. And I thank our retiring directors and members for their time and contributions to the organization and Canada’s beef industry: Grant Huffman (BC); Jodi Flaig (AB); Stuart Somerville (AB) and Gord Adams (MB). The AGM set the tone for the year ahead including production discussion on the beef industry’s priorities, including focusing on maintaining full business continuity through COVID-19, making changes to business risk management programs, ensuring beef is seen as a nutritious, sustainable and safe protein choice, changing the conversation about cattle from an environmental perspective, and enhancing international trade market access. CCA was pleased the FPT Ministers agreed in March to remove the reference margin limit (RML) within the AgriStability program, an enhancement CCA has long been advocating for. The proposal tabled by Minister Bibeau included the removal of the RML and an increase to the compensation rate from 70 per cent to 80 per cent. We were disappointed governments could not yet agree to the compensation rate, we are pleased with the changes that will stand to benefit beef producers across the country. Removing the RML will go a long way in making AgriStability more predictable and equitable for our industry. We are asking FPT Ministers to continue productive discussions on further changes to agriculture risk management programs in Canada – making the Livestock Price Insurance Program national and permanent. Environment is another key area this coming year. We know that the positive environmental contributions of cattle production and the Canadian beef industry are not as well understood. That’s why we are continuing to raise the profile of Canada’s beef sector within the Government of Canada and at the Cabinet table to make sure our industry is understood as an economic engine for our country while also being an environmentally positive industry. The remaining four of the seven 2030 beef industry goals are being announced this spring which focus on water, beef quality and food safety, people health and safety and technology. Stay tuned as I

will take a deeper dive into the beef goals and what that means for producers in future columns. Looking to our biggest ally south of the border, CCA is continuing engagement with U.S. policy makers and our allies in Washington to head off efforts to bring back Mandatory Country-ofOrigin Labeling (mCOOL). Further abroad, CCA is working with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to increase Canada’s ability to export more beef to the European Union, a market which has seen steady but non-optimized export growth since the implementation of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). We are also striving for further export opportunities by supporting the expansion of membership in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership. Earlier this spring the federal government announced Canada is ratifying the Canada-United Kingdom (U.K.) Trade Continuity Agreement (TCA). CCA is strongly advocating for a swift return to the negotiating table to establish an ambitious free trade agreement that addresses the current trade limiting factors being carried over from the Comprehensive and Economic Trade Agreement (CETA) to the Canada-U.K. TCA and the future trade agreement with the U.K. At time of writing, we await the World Organisation for Animal Health’s (OIE) ruling expected in May for the anticipated approval of Canada’s BSE Negligible Risk Status. We continue to seek changes to eliminate remaining BSE impediments to trade. I am also delighted to announce the Canadian Cattlemen’s Foundation (CCF) entered into a partnership with Agriculture in the Classroom Canada (AITC-C), and its ten provincial member organizations. As a Foundational and Educational Partner, CCF will collaborate with AICT-C to develop agriculture education resources including a teacher guide for Guardians of the Grasslands, documentary that explores the current state of one of the world’s most endangered ecosystems, the Great Plains grasslands, and the role cattle play in its survival. Supporting Agriculture in the Classroom Canada in this capacity is a proud milestone for the CCF. The $50,000 contribution to AITC-C is the first-of-its-kind since the inception of CCF in 2014. Strengthening the youth connection to the Canadian beef industry and sustainable food production is a key focus for the Foundation and the CCA is excited to partner with AITC-C as our first major grant initiative. I would like to thank everyone who has donated to the CCF for making this possible. With CCA’s support, AITC-C will create new curriculum-linked educational resources for classrooms based on accurate, balanced, and current information about environmental sustainability and nutrition in relation to the beef industry. I can’t wait to see what the rest of 2021 has in store. Be sure to check out the news section of the CCA website, cattle.ca, for CCA’s latest news releases and industry statements.

Agriculture, food production and distribution which had been taken for granted for decades has been thrust into the spotlight. This will have long term impacts on our industry, and we need to be prepared and adapt to evolving market conditions. Business continuity for beef producers has been a priority for CBBC and other industry groups during the pandemic. A key step was ensuring agriculture was deemed an essential service early in the pandemic. This has provided certain exemptions to restrictions faced by other industries. At the same time, it is important that we take precautions in order to keep our friends and family healthy and be prepared in the event there is an outbreak on your farm. We know that COVID has a high survival rate. But what happens when a family member, an employee or yourself are fighting symptoms of the COVID and are not able to work or are required by law to isolate or quarantine. Animals still need to be tended to and your farm operating. Every farm/ranch operation is different so there isn’t a standard procedure but develop a plan that works for your operation. There is no indication of when border crossing restrictions will be lifted. However, agriculture is exempt from some restrictions in order for food to remain available for Canadians through the pandemic. Live breeding cattle, semen and embryos are able to cross the border into the United States or Canada. Live cattle can be transported by either a commercial

carrier or on your own truck/ trailer. You are able to cross into the US to pick up purchased animals as well as deliver animals you have sold. As a cattle producer, you may qualify to travel under the essential service worker designation and are able to cross into the US for business purposes even if you are not transporting cattle, but additional documentation will be required. This may include attending agriculture events such as auction sales or to view or purchase cattle and American cattle producers are also able to attend similar events in Canada. There are additional documentation and testing requirements which are subject to the discretion of the border agent at the port of entry. These requirements change on a regular basis and also depend on which Province you are departing or returning to or if a person is crossing via land or at an airport. At the time of writing, if you are traveling under the essential service worker designation you will still be required to provide a negative COVID test taken within 72 hours of departure/crossing but may be able to avoid quarantine requirements. These exemptions are at the discretion of the border agent and subject to change without notice. Plan for the unexpected. For more information on travelling into the USA or inviting American cattle producers to Canada, contact the CBBC office at info@beefbreeds.ca or call 403-730-0350. There is additional COVID related information available on the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association website at www.cattle.ca.

Congratulations

Congratulations

Lawson Ty Draves made his arrival on February 7, 2021 right in the middle of calving season to proud parents Ty and Taylor Draves of Ty-D Livestock. Lawson has received his first Simmental heifer and is sure to be involved in this awesome breed as he grows up!

We are thrilled to announce the birth of Alexis Bella Dew, born February 22, 2021 and weighing 8 lbs. 6 oz. Proud parents are John & Brittany Dew of HiTech Farms in Ingleside, ON. Proud grandparents are Larry & Rhonda Barkley also of Hi- Tech Farms in Ingleside.

Our Deepest Sympathies Joseph Steeves, 85 years, of Moncton, New Brunswick passed away on April 3, 2021. Farming was Joe’s passion and he loved living on the farm and watching things grow and develop, whether it be cattle, crops or his huge garden. He and his wife Doreen started Jo-Dreen Farm, and raised beef cattle for over 55 years. He started with Shorthorns and later on bought his first Simmental cattle. He saw his first Simmental when he was working as an inspector at the quarantine station at Joseph Steeves Sainte Pierre & Miquelon. After seeing them there, he started his research on the breed and had to try them. He took great pride in producing quality cattle. Being in the barn or hay field was his favorite place to be. He loved to show people how the dykes on the marsh worked, as well as how much grass could be grown there. He was on many agriculture boards, helping the industry wherever possible. He showed cattle at many exhibitions, both locally and in Ontario and Quebec, and judged the Royal Winter Fair on two different occasions. Even a barn fire could not keep him from continuing to farm. With the help of many friends and neighbours, he and Doreen were back in business the next year with a brand new herd of Simmental cattle. Joe was extremely honored to be inducted into the Simmental Hall of Fame. He will be missed by his wife of 65 years, Doreen, as well as his three daughters Marlene (Peter) Gaunce, Marcie (Don) Pauley and Heather (Gary) Trenholm; his 10 treasured grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; as well as his many friends. He was predeceased by his son Billy.

It is with great sadness that the family announce the passing of Frank (F.J.) Franks on Sunday, January 24, 2021 at the age of 84 years. After serving in the air force, he farmed and raised Simmental cattle at Maidstone, SK. Frank was a hockey referee and then involved in old-timers hockey travelling to international tournaments. He was a member of the Lloydminster Chuck Wagon Association Frank Franks Exhibition, and organizations including the Legion, Craven Country Jamboree, and the Canadian Western Agribition. In his retirement, his passion was for traveling the world. He held more than one fully stamped passport and had a story about each country he visited. He always had a high regard for the less fortunate countries and to appreciate how good we live in Canada.

Tuesday, March 23rd, 1943 - Tuesday, March 9th, 2021 Suddenly, on Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at West Haldimand General Hospital, Hagersville. Fred Reicheld, beloved husband of Sally (nee Kitchen), in his 78th year. Loving father of Andrea (Clay) Reicheld-King, Nathan (Erica), Drew (Kendra) and Nicolaus Paul (Nicole). Dear grandpa of Jordan, Dylan, Julia, Noah, Sophia, Olivia, Mia, Chase and Layne. Brother of Glenda (Delbert) O’Brien and the late Christine Tothpal. Also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by his parents Glenn (2006) and Mirna (1986) Reicheld. Fred attended Ridgetown Agricultural College and was a successful breeder of show cattle and won several awards at the Royal Winter Fair. Fred was inducted into the Canadian Simmental Hall of Fame in 2017, in recognition of his influence and achievements in the cattle industry. He was a long-time member of the Jarvis Lions Club, the Ontario Simmental Association and the Ontario Farmers’ Association.

Welcome Crystal Fisk I am very excited to be the newest YCSA Programs Coordinator and look forward to working with the CSA and all the youth of the Simmental breed. Alongside my husband, Travis, and daughter, Blake, we operate Ridgeline Cattle Co at Parry, SK. I grew up west of Bowden, AB and was involved in 4-H, the Junior Hereford Association, Summer Synergy and the Alberta YCS. I began my cattle career in the Hereford breed but got involved in the Simmental breed when I was 17 and have been building our herd ever since. I am currently an assistant leader of the Milestone 4-H Club and the coach of my daughter’s baseball team if we are allowed to play this year. I am very passionate about the cattle industry especially the Simmental breed and the youth in agriculture.

Farewell...

It has been a great 5 years to serve as the YCSA Program Coordinator! It was not an easy decision to leave a role that I truly loved but as life commitments change it was time to step back and let someone else fill the position. It has been an honour and privilege to have met so many wonderful people in the Simmental breed and I know I will be seeing many of you down the road. We have a fantastic youth program that is well supported and I have the upmost confidence that the current YCSA board will continue to develop great programming for our youth! Yours truly, Kelsey Manske

Fundraising Auction S a t u r d a y , J u ly 24 t h , 2 0 2 1 P o r ta g e L a P r a i r i e , M a n i to b a “2021 is still full of uncertainty, one thing that is certain is that the annual FCSF Fundraising Auction will be a go for 2021! After discussion with the FCSF Board of Directors, CSA Staff , Board of Directors and the Convention Committee in Manitoba, we feel it necessary to return to some state of normal and have an auction. This auction raises funds for our youth and provides commitment to research and development for our breed but on top of that the auction gives great moral to the breeders, volunteers and donators that support it every year. We understand that circumstances continue to change on a dime and in the event that we will not be able to host the auction in person we are prepared to move it to an online timed auction.” ~ Ken Lewis, FCSF President

2021 Friend of the Foundation – Crowe Bros As the Foundation Friend for 2021 The Crowe Bros will donate lot 1 - A bred heifer. Brent and Scott Crowe, along with their families, operate a mixed family farm one mile south of Gilbert Plains, MB. In 2010, while starting young families, the decision was made to disperse the family dairy, but with livestock in the blood, purebred Simmental’s were purchased from Robb Farms. Over the last decade, the Crowe’s have sourced elite bulls and females from across Canada and in the United States. They use AI and embryo programs to enhance the quality of their herd. Bulls are sold off the yard and select females marketed through consignment sales. They have slowly started to exhibit cattle at Manitoba Ag Ex and Agribition with plans to be more involved in this great industry.

How You Can Support The Auction This Year?

1.

Donate an item - Lots can be anything from genetics, to a special art piece, to tickets to a sporting event. All donators will receive a charitable tax receipt.

2.

After the catalogue is out, start to plan your purchases of tickets on the lot 1 bred heifer or any of the other items in this year’s sale.

Shyanne Reynold

FCSF funds to be used towards an artificial insemination course, Consul SK

Shyanne is currently in Grade 12 at Consul School. Shyanne grew up on a farm in Southwest Saskatchewan, where they raise commercial cattle. Her involvement with the Simmental Association began in 2016 when she won the Arnal Boys Memorial Bursary to buy her first purebred bred Simmental heifer. Shyanne has continued growing her herd each year. Shyanne has been involved in 4-H for 8 years. Shyanne enjoys showing cattle at various shows throughout Saskatchewan and Alberta. Her future plans include going to Lakeland College to study Animal Health Technology to become a Registered Vet Technician. While attending Lakeland Shyanne plans to take an AI course to expand her herd genetics.

Rylee Rogers FCSF funds went towards an artificial insemination course, Drayton Valley, AB Rylee goes to school in Drayton Valley at Frank Maddock High School and is in the 11th grade. She lives about 20 minutes north of Drayton Valley where there family raise purebred and commercial Simmental and Hereford cattle. Rylee has recently earned her certification in cattle insemination at Lakeland College and can’t wait to diversify the genetics into her herd. Once Rylee graduates high school she hopes to take a year off to gain some practical knowledge in the cattle industry and then apply that knowledge in her post-secondary studies.

Jordynn Rogers FCSF funds went towards an artificial insemination course, Drayton Valley, AB Jordynn Rogers lives just outside of Drayton Valley Alberta where her and her two sisters raise purebred and commercial Simmental and Hereford cattle. Jordynn has also been involved on a huge level with the local 4-H club since the age of nine. It was through this club that her passion for cattle and the agriculture industry began and grew. Jordynn always looks forward to attending junior shows throughout the summer, but would say her favorite part of the industry is by far calving season!

To apply visit simmentalfoundation.com Application deadlines are March 1st and October 1st of each year and will be reviewed for approval by the Foundation Board of Directors during the spring and fall board meetings. 27 SC Spring 2021.indd 27
