Allowing Time for the Registry Process
A
t the time of writing this it is early January and we have turned the calendar to a new decade. We are in the midst of a flurry of winter activity as female sales have wrapped up and calving is well under way for many seed-stock producers. Along with the new calves being born, the regular chores must be done along with bull sale preparations for breeders who sell their bulls by auction. Ringmen, the auctioneer, and a sale manager or consultants, have been booked for months as well as the auction mart if it is an off-farm sale. Bulls are being clipped and pictured as weather permits so pictures showing the bulls at their very best can be sent to catalogue design crews in order to be sure that they are mailed out in time before the sale. Many of you may also go through a videoing process to supply as much visual information as possible to prospective buyers in order to secure their interest for your big day. The weeks before a bull sale are a hectic time that is full of pressure and activity leading to what is the biggest pay-day of the year for many Simmental producers. It is also a very busy time of year for breed association offices including Simmental. The Canadian Simmental Association (CSA is responsible for the registry services for the Simmental breed in Canada, and along with that responsibility comes the obligation of completeness and integrity of the data and information we provide through the pedigrees of the cattle we register. The bylaws of the CSA guides the registry process and are approved by Agriculture and Agrifood Canada and require that animals that are promoted as Simmental and sold as such must be registered in the CSA herd-book. That does not mean “applied for” or sold “registration pending” but carrying a Canadian Simmental Association issued registration number. Fortunately most of the bulls sold in Simmental sales do carry a CSA number however every year there are instances where this is the not the case, and more often than not it is because the CSA office is waiting on parentage verification results to be received from the lab. The reason for this is usually that the breeder did not start the registration and lab process soon enough.
The lab used by most beef breed associations in Canada is Neogen based in Edmonton, Alberta. This lab does a tremendous amount of work leading into the busy bull sale season and does its utmost to complete the testing process as quickly as possible. Some of the realities of the testing process include the need to allow one month for turn-around time from when the lab receives your samples! You need to allow the appropriate time for your samples to reach the lab and then add approximately twenty business days minimum! While this has been messaged to CSA members many times, we still receive last minute rush requests which is a service that the CSA simply cannot provide. All tests must be ordered through the CSA office. Our staff processes the billing through your CSA account and is prepared to answer any of your questions, however you need to contact the CSA office for your test kits AFTER you have provided the required information for the animals you are testing. Ensuring that this is completed before contacting the office for your test kit will allow the process to flow much more smoothly. There is no rush or priority given to any members as everyone needs their work done yesterday. Through the sire or parentage verification process we occasionally identify animals that may be sired by a different bull or who are out of a different dam than first thought. The lab is the final judge on the validation of the ancestry and in the case of all calves born by embryo transplant (ET) we need the parentage verified to us before the animal can be registered. Simmental has no higher incidences of error than other breeds and we should all take pride in that. The CSA office staff, and the staff we work with at Neogen, play a very important role in providing as accurate information as possible to you and your customers. Completing your registry work well in advance, like you do with other areas of your bull sale, will allow time to deal with the unexpected should it arise, and for everyone to do their job properly. Where do EPDs Come From – From Breeding to Birth of an EPD
T
here is a common misconception among many beef cattle breeders, that EPDs are pulled from the air or based on some imaginary information. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. In this article we will attempt to explain (and in some cases vastly oversimplify) where EPDs are derived from. Having a basic understanding of the process of development and some of the science behind an EPD can help us to appreciate how they work and that they do work. This understanding also demonstrates why it is important to provide data that is of as high a quality as we can collect. The conception stages of an EPD should revolve around the concept of Economically Relevant Traits (ERT). An ERT is a trait that directly impacts the profitability of, in our case, a beef operation. This means the EPD should express genetic differences in traits that either have a direct impact on either costs or income. For example, if we market calves at weaning by the pound, then weaning weight is an ERT, since it produces income. We have EPD for traits that are not ERT and usually these are what we call indicator traits. These are often historic artifacts because we had the data to develop them before the technology to calculate the relevant ERT was available. Birth weight is a good example here. The technology to calculate genetic differences in birth weigh was available before the technology to calculate what really costs money (Calving Ease) was available. Or in other cases we use them because they are easier to measure than the trait that is the actual ERT. For example, it is easier to measure mature cow size than feed intake of a cow on pasture. Decisions on which EPD to pursue are usually based on collaboration between researchers and producers (often with breed associations acting as the middle man). For example, producers might indicate that they are concerned about, or need to work on knowledge of carcass characteristics in their cattle to better serve their customer base. The association may work to help them collect and pool carcass and ultrasound data and work with researchers to develop and deploy carcass EPDs for various traits such as marbling or eye muscle area. Data collection is really, just a first step. A good current example would be the work of IGS to collect feet and leg scores from breeders. Secondarily, researchers and producers may identify areas of concern that are more difficult to measure or are novel traits. In this case research herds, such as those at Universities, Research Stations or Co-operator Herds may be used to build datasets. Probably a good recent example of this may be work done on PAP scoring for resistance to altitude sickness. Once there is a data set established on the trait of interest, researchers will go to work understanding the data and what it means. This is anchored in biology and an understanding of how
natural processes workand also in what expression of the trait will inform commercial selection decisions. A simple example could be weaning weight expressed in relative pounds of difference between offspring. It is a big simplification, but any new analysis involves understanding the trait and how to express it, and understanding what the data is telling us about the genetics behind that trait. You may hear terms like, “estimation of variance components” or “heritability estimates.” These are basically scientific terms for understanding data and how it is spread out across the population. We will use an oversimplified example of heritability to illustrate the point. Heritability can be thought of as a way of understanding how much variation in phenotypes for a trait, is due to the genetics for that trait. For traits with a high heritability, each phenotypic record contains a lot of information about the genetics involved. Traits with a low heritability are generally subject to a lot of environmental influence and so each record may contain slightly less genetic information. Heritability is calculated using data. Again, in a vast oversimplification, we look at expected vs actual differences in the data and calculate heritability. There is a lot more to calculating heritability than what is shown, but this basic example of calculating a realized heritability for birth weight will hopefully shed some light on the idea behind the process. If we have a population with an average birth weight of 80 pounds and we selected parents from that population with a birth weight of 70 pounds. We would expect the offspring of those parents to be 70 pounds or 10 pounds less than the average if birth weight was 100% due to genetic factors. Let’s say in our data set the average birth weight of the offspring was 77 pounds. The expected variation was a 10 pound decrease, but the realized difference was only 3 pounds. The realized heritability is the difference between the original population and the offspring of the selected parents divided by the difference between the average of the original population and the average of the selected parents. Realized Heritability = Average BW – Actual BW = 80 – 77 = 3 = 0.30 Average BW – Expected BW = 80 – 70 = 10
Again, this is a very simplified example and does not show all of the processes behind the scenes, but it provides the general idea of some of the math behind determining genetic contribution to a trait and developing an EPD.When done on a large scale (several thousand records) and with clean data we can get a very good idea of what portion of observed differences are explained by the additive genetic component. These are our “variance components” mentioned earlier. Correlations are also determined from data and an understanding of biology. Correlations do not “cause” a genetic result, but they do allow us to use data from other associated traits to

improve our predictive capability. One of the best examples here is birth weight and calving ease. Heavier birth weights are associated with more difficult births, but they are not the only cause of difficult calving. Calf shape and maternal environment also play major roles. These traits are all “associated� with calving ease. By using information such as birth weight and calving difficulty scores, we can do a much better job of figuring out genetics for calving ease. Once the background biology is done, and the math complete, an EPD can be calculated. This is the basic process of assigning contemporary groups and examining how the genetics of animals play out across groups with the same management and environmental history, and applying our new variance components to the data. Part of the process of EPD development involves taking the models developed in the earlier stages and computing EPD on cattle, then comparing the actual performance of the cattle (data records) to see if the predictions are actually producing the expected results. It also includes the litmus test of providing trial results to breeders and seeing if they match up with what they are seeing on the ground and submitting the EPDs to others in industry and the scientific community to scrutinize the results and ask questions. Generally this process takes several iterations, and may even involve going back into the steps of understanding the data and the trait we are working on.
While this article has several glaring oversimplifications, this also serves to illustrate the point that as the science evolves and we gain better understanding of how a cow works and how she interacts with her environment we can garner more genetic information out of our existing phenotype and pedigree data. This is one of the biggest drivers behind changes in EPD over time. Our evaluation, software, hardware and even our data collection improves and thus our EPD can be made more predictive as well. Just like a calf that is born, the science of genetic evaluation continues to grow and evolve. Although outside the scope of this article, a good recent example of this would be the inclusion of DNA or genomic data into genetic evaluation. DNA technology has rapidly changed and enhanced our ability to calculate accurate genetic predictions and make better comparisons of potential seedstock. A lot of work goes on in the background before an EPD ever sees the light of day. From assessing the traits of interest and ensuring they are in fact economically important, to collecting good data sets on traits of interest, to examining the relevant biology and evaluating the data to determine the genetic components of a trait, running a model and comparing expected results with actual on the ground performance, an EPD is based on science and is the most powerful selection tool available in the context of a targeted breeding objective.

Look around at any industry meeting and there is a common theme among the participants: their age. Encouraging young people to pursue careers in the beef industry has been a priority for quite some time, yet it is still a challenge we face. Access to financing and affordable land to run profitable operations, lack of clear succession planning, and limited mentorship opportunities are all barriers that youth face in pursuing a career in beef production. Many of these issues are targeted in the new National Beef Strategy, however this is not a new challenge. In 2010, the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) introduced the Cattlemen’s Young Leaders (CYL) program as one way to help provide tools for youth in the beef industry to succeed and through this initiative, many have done just that. CYL is the flagship mentorship program of the CCA designed to develop future leaders in Canada’s beef industry. Each year, beef enthusiasts between the ages of 18 to 35 are given the opportunity to apply to the program and 24 semifinalists are selected. The online application process opens in January and the deadline for eligible candidates to apply is in late March. Semi-finalists are invited to attend round table discussions at the Canadian Beef Industry Conference where 16 final candidates are selected. As of 2019, over 100 people have graduated from the program. Once selected the candidates are matched with a hand-selected expert in the mentee’s specific field of interest. Topics of interest can range from sustainable ranching to risk management, policy development research, and more. Once candidates are matched with their respective mentors the mentor/mentee journey begins. With the creation of an initial roadmap, the mentor and candidate set out the goals they wish to achieve during their time in the program. Candidates are given a yearly budget of $2,000 to fund their participation in numerous industry events and conventions, as well as travel to meet with their mentors if necessary. Through attendance of industry events, meetings with their mentors, and the completion of the Beef Advocacy Canada program, the candidates build upon their knowledge-base and become highly capable individuals to represent and lead the beef industry into the future. The program benefits both parties involved by exposing a young person to elements of a potential career choice, and at the same time, being an extremely rewarding experience for the mentor. The CYL program highlights the best and brightest of the industry, so it is no wonder that many have gone on to pursue successful careers not just in primary production, but as staff and elected officials in various industry organizations,
including CCA. Stacey Domolewski, 2014 CYL graduate, is now the Science and Innovation Coordinator for the Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC), while another graduate from that year, Ellen Crane, works as BCRC’s Extension Coordinator. On the provincial level, 2016 graduate Jesse Williams is an Alberta Beef Producers delegate in Zone 4, 2014 graduate Jaclyn Horenberg and 2015 graduate Bethany Storey both work for Beef Farmers of Ontario and 2018 graduate Amy Higgins works for the Maritime Beef Council. In fact, it is a recent CYL graduate that now helps new CYL’s get the most out of their mentorship experience. At the beginning of January, we welcomed Jessica Giles, who participated in the 2018 CYL program, as the new Youth Leadership Coordinator here at CCA. Jessica comes from a mixed grain and cattle operation near High River, Alberta and was mentored by Agriculture and Rodeo Reporter and Broadcaster from Red Deer, Alberta, Dianne Finstad. Focusing on writing, public speaking, and networking opportunities; Dianne was able to expand Jessica’s network in agriculture communications, as well as equipping her with skills to tell the story of Canada’s beef industry through her previous role as an agriculture journalist. The travel budget for participants also allowed Jessica to take in events like the Alberta Farm Writers Tour and the CCA Annual General Meeting in Ottawa. After what she describes as a memorable year of growth, Jessica is looking forward to helping like-minded young people excel through the mentorship program and advance their chosen path in the beef industry. We are fortunate to see these talented young people flourish in industry leadership roles. Funding for the CYL program is made available through its Foundation Partners: Cargill, MNP and McDonald’s Canada. The program also receives support from Gold Sponsors Farm Credit Canada and New Holland and program sponsorship from the Alberta Cattle Feeders Association. Improper Cervical Dilation at Calving
O
ne of the hardest calving dilemmas you face as producers or we face as veterinarians is improper cervical dilation. When going through the stages of labor before expulsion of the fetus the cervix relaxes, softens and opens up essentially as wide as the vagina to allow the fetus to enter the vaginal vault. When this does not happen normally or is delayed the health of the fetus and dam may be in jeopardy. When you as producers examine a cow you think is in labor and find a closed or partially open cervix what should you do? If one were to examine a close to term pregnancy the cervix is to the front of the vagina and the opening is normally about one to two fingers and resembles sticking your finger in a doughnut. So when a cow is straining somewhat and you do a vaginal exam and find this what is your next step? First off I hope you have fully cleaned the cows back end used OB sleeves and an approved lubricant. The very act of examining her may initiate a small degree of straining that may look like she’s calving so be gentle. This may or may not be true as she could be prolapsing her vagina and that was the reason for concern. What I do in these situations is if you think a cow is calving and find a closed cervix reexamining her a couple hours later and finding the cervical opening has increased tells you that calving is progressing. If no change do we have a false alarm or is there a problem? That is sometimes the million-dollar question. Some vets may have you leave the cow for more time and some may perform a caesarian section. Other issues involve a calving cow and when checked the cervix is only open enough to get the front two legs through for instance. This is not common but will require different interventions depending on how progress is made. Generally in a normal calving when we get to the expulsion of the fetus the cervix is normally right out of the way. When it isn’t we have an abnormal finding and a dystocia. We first as veterinarians try and dilate the cervix more manually to facilitate delivery. If the nose and head can be partially delivered a slight amount of traction may help dilate the cervix fully. This is where one has to be really careful as too much traction is both stressful on the calf and the cervix may rip causing excessive bleeding and possibly be fatal to the cow. If no progress is made a caesarian section is performed to get a live calf, saving the cow but the cow should be marked for shipping the next year. Usually the fetal membranes can be passed through a partially opened cervix.
Some of these cows with a partially opened cervix at calving may have had a difficult calving the year before damage was caused to the cervix and as a result caused improper dilation the year following. There is a condition in sheep called “ring womb” that is essentially improper dilation of the cervix. Even though lots of room in the pelvis and vaginal opening c-sections are the only solution for a cervix that wont dilate. As mentioned a forced extraction through a partially open cervix both the cows and calf’s life are in jeopardy so a c-section is a win-win most times. You can usually tell the cervix’s that will open with just some manual dilation. They are soft and supple and you make progress after ten or fifteen minutes getting them to open more. The hard fibrous feeling the cervix no amount of time will get them to open up so jumping to a c-section hopefully will be in time. There are a couple other instances when a partially closed cervix will be encountered. Your veterinarian after correcting a torsed uterus will then encounter a partially closed cervix . Because of the twist the cervix cannot fully dilate but upon correction the cervix can generally be dilated by hand. There is the tendency to let them dilate on his or her own but I have done that and we ran out of time resulting in a stillborn calf. Now I proceed to dilate the cervix manually to facilitate extraction. These are generally soft and supple cervixes so dilate easily in my experience. The other condition is a delayed calving resulting in death and an emphysematous fetus. This could be because of a malpresentation such as a breech birth where the cervix is opened straining does not ensue times runs out the calf dies bloats up and straining ensues. Often the cervix can start to close up much as happens after a normal calving. These may require fetotomies, partial fetotomies, or midline c-sections in order to salvage the cow. Although infrequently encountered partial cervical dilation does require serious intervention by either yourself or your veterinarian depending on your experience level. Recognizing them is the first step. If you think a cow is in labor and no progress is being made don’t hesitate to do a vaginal exam, as improper cervical dilation may be a cause. Recognizing it early, having you or your veterinarian providing intervention may still provide you with a favorable outcome (alive cow and calf). Have a great calving season everyone.

The Young Met With Resounding Success
NTHUSIAM was the key to the organizational meeting of the “YOUNG CANADIAN SIMMENTALERS” held in Calgary, Alberta on December 13th and 14th, 1980. Selected representatives from across Canada had been asked to attend and bring their ideas for a youth group to work directly with the provincial Simmental associations under the umbrella of the Canadian Simmental Association. The C.S.A. Youth Committee has previously discussed a number of proposals concerning a junior or youth organization and the meeting represented the culmination of its efforts. The Canadian Simmental Association Board of Directors had received indications that interest was high among junior members, and the Board was ready to recommend and support a youth association. The meeting would decide whether the young people wanted an organization of their own and would be willing to put a lot of hard work into starting and maintaining a viable association. THE ANSWER WAS A RESOUNDING YES!! A lunch on Saturday, December 13th gave the group a chance to get acquainted then everyone moved to Highfield Stock Farms at Okotoks for a quick tour of the impressive facilities. Following the tour, the group settled down to the serious business of discussing the proposed Youth Organization. First on the agenda were the questions; “Do the young Simmental breeders want a youth organization?” and “What do you think the purpose of such a group should be?” The youth representatives had no problem with the first question – a unanimous “Yes”, but there were a variety of responses regarding the group’s purpose. The show ring seemed to be the initial choice by the majority, but as the meeting progressed an abundance of other ideas surfaced. After things slowed down a bit, Earl Ballard, Youth Committee Chairman, and Alex Mills, Youth Co-Ordinator, were asked to tell the meeting what the C.S.A. Board of Directors had in mind as goals for a junior association. Earl felt these goals included some promotions by way of showring, but the main intent was to encourage future members of the C.S.A. and to train youth to become potential Directors of both the national and provincial Simmental Association. Alex felt such a group should go beyond the 4-H level with a view to an apprenticeship program with members learning management, etc. while building up herds of their own for equity or for sale or to use as a foundation herd. These
suggestions resulted in a further landslide of ideas for the potential junior groups Youth representatives stressed that they did not want “just another club or junior association”. Definite projects and specific programs which would result in longlasting benefits to the individuals and the breed should be the priorities. They also felt that their time in such organization should be used to the best advantage with obvious results. Another idea concerned promoting Simmental cattle as a second enterprise for a young farmer involved in the family farm – instead of buying another piece of expensive land, build up a good herd on available land already owned. Young people usually relate better to other young people, and the representatives present felt this was one field where the Young Canadian Simmentalers could work with the commercial cattleman and their families. Highfield generously provided an excellent supper, after which discussion continued. The youth representatives were then taken back to the hotel where they held a meeting of their own to decide on concrete proposals for the general meeting to be held the next day. The meeting reconvened Sunday, December 14th at 9:05 a.m. at the Canadian Simmental Association Boardroom, where the Youth Committee listened with amazement to the well-constructed proposals by the youth. They had certainly done their homework and deserved top marks for their efforts! Items passed by the meeting included: Age of members: Age limits to be 25 and under with the subject matter recommended for people 15 years of age and over, with provision that the person is not over 25 by January 1st of the calendar year. Objective: To bring young Simmental enthusiasts into a program which will help them attain knowledge and friendship in the cattle business, and to become viable members in the Canadian Simmental Association.

Proposed Projects: 1. Bred yearling heifer class at 1981 Agribition, open to all person 25 years of age and under, to be designated as a Young Canadian Simmentaler class, PROVIDED the Agribition Committee will allow such a class to be included in the program. 2. Competition in open shows in areas where there are not many potential Y.C.S. members, and if numbers permit, separate classes for potential Y.C.S. members providing the various fair and show boards agree. 3. Seminars and clinics on such topics as: • Nutrition • Herd Management • Herd & Farm Management • Financing • Herd Health Care • Judging • Fitting • Marketing & Advertising • Genetics 4. Tours of established farming operations raising both purebred and commercial herds, A.I. studs, etc. 5. Work Placement Programs – Y.C.S. would provide a list in each province of juniors who would like to work at a production sale, show, etc., but don’t have the connections to get involved any other way. There would also be a list of people who would be interested in hiring or working with the young people. 6. Youth Incentive Program – Y.C.S. asked that the Canadian Simmental Association sponsor a Youth Incentive Program which would consist of a number of financial awards, and could be applied for in the same manner as a bank loan, and which could be given on the basis of participation in the programs 7. Herdbuilding Scheme – Recognizing that a number of people are not interested in showing cattle, a Herdbuilding Scheme would complement a Herd Production and Management program. This could be geared to the commercial cow/calf operator but would also apply to purebred breeders. Membership Fee: $25.00 for any Y.C.S. member to be paid upon joining, and to be applied against a life membership when the member reaches the age of 25 years, or sooner if her or she decides to take out a life membership in the Canadian Simmental Association prior to attaining the age of 25 years. Organization: To start on a provincial level with the financial and moral support of the Canadian Simmental Association and the provincial associations, with the C.S.A providing a guideline and handbook as a common base for the Y.C.S. members across Canada. Members present agreed to act as “contact” persons to help start the provincial associations, and to work with Alex Mills in presenting the proposals to the existing provincial associations. Members present stressed they felt it was vital to the Y.C.S. to work closely with the Executives, Directors, and memberships of the Canadian and provincial Simmental associations. Interest was also expressed in working at various shows and sales and assisting with the marshalling of cattle, promoting Simmental cattle on local levels and with aspects of the cattle business. Another area of great concern to young Simmentalers was the difficulty they have in purchasing top-quality animals at prices they
can afford. Various methods of circumventing this problem were put forward, including leasing a top heifer from an established breeder, partnerships with breeders and purchasing on a time payment plan, all of which require the backing of C.S.A. members to succeed. A highlight of the morning meeting was a letter presented to the Chairman, Earl Ballard by Ted Pritchett, the Editor of Simmental Country. In part his letter stated “Recognizing the importance of youth in the future of our country and the Simmental business. I am pleased to offer tow $1000.00 Breeders Program.” Details were to be arranged at a later date, but the scholarships to be used “to further a young breeders practical experience or practical education”. Simmental Country will also provide summer employment for young people interested in learning more about the publication business, and will co-operate with the Junior Program to promote its activities by running news releases as well as ads promoting members and their activities. Mr. Ballard thanked Ted Pritchett and Simmental Country for this very generous gesture and the participants in the meeting also expressed their appreciation. The Meeting was successful because of the active, enthusiastic involvement of young people. Their participation will ensure the future of the Simmental breed and add new depth to the programs of the Canadian and provincial Simmental associations. ongratulations to the exhibitors on a successful show season again this year. There were a lot of positive comments from our international visitors about the quality of cattle across all breeds. It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of cattle breeders who persevered through a difficult year of unpredictable Canadian weather. Even as data and information increasingly drives our cattle selection, the importance of exhibiting your cattle will remain an important part of our industry for the foreseeable future. Livestock exhibitions are still where the business of the industry gets done. People want to see the cattle and they want to be able to interact with other cattlemen in person and there is no better place to do that then at a cattle show. It also helps bridge the urban and rural divide as tens of thousands of students and spectators visit agricultural fairs to experience where their food comes from. This will become increasingly important over the next few years as we face changing consumer preferences where they are not as connected to agriculture as the generation before them. At Agribition, CBBC was invited to join an industry roundtable discussion with Canadian Minister of Agriculture Agri-Food, Marie-Claude Bibeau, as the representative organization for the Canadian purebred beef cattle and genetics sector. Prior to the meeting, the Minister had the opportunity to walk the barns and meet with cattle producers from across Canada and see first-hand the quality of our beef genetics. The Minister seemed very impressed by both the people and the cattle which made for a productive and engaging discussion. Key topics were
on ensuring that the AgriMarketing program is fully funded so we can continue to promote Canadian genetics internationally and host international guests in Canada. We also want to ensure that reopening markets, such as China, for genetics is a top priority for the government. It was also described to the Minister that we have the most efficient and productive beef herd anywhere in the world, yet we know that we can do even better. We can accomplish it with support from government and collaboration across the industry. The new Canada’s National Beef Strategy 2020-2024 was released in October. This is a collaborative effort from the national and provincial beef cattle organizations including the Canadian Beef Breeds Council. This strategy impacts producers and is the guiding document for the industry for the next five years. Of particular interest to seedstock producers are the sections on genetic improvement and on market access. The Canadian Beef Innovation Network is a collaborative effort driven by the breed associations, the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association and CBBC and is a key component of the National Beef Strategy. The goal is to redefine how genetic improvement is utilized and conducted across the production chain from seedstock producers and commercial cow/calf through to the packing sector and consumers. It is an ambitious initiative but necessary to ensure our cattle utilize new technology to meet expectations for the consumer of the future, not the consumer of the past. ’écris cet article au début de janvier, au moment où on amorce une nouvelle décennie. Nous sommes rendus au milieu d’une foule d’activités hivernales, alors que les ventes de femelles sont terminées et que les éleveurs de race pure s’affairent activement avec leurs vêlages. En plus de s’occuper des veaux nouvellement nés, on doit faire le train habituel et, pour les éleveurs concernés, ils doivent déjà se préparer à vendre leurs taureaux à l’encan. Pour ceux-là, on a réservé depuis quelques mois un encanteur, un gérant de vente ou un consultant, des pointeurs durant l’encan, de même qu’un local d’encan si on effectue la vente en-dehors de la ferme. On s’affaire à tondre les taureaux, à les photographier si la température est clémente afin qu’ils paraissent à leur mieux, puis on transmet ces photos et les informations aux graphistes préparant les catalogues qui seront postés avant la date de la vente. Plusieurs d’entre vous pourront également produire des vidéos afin d’offrir encore davantage d’informations aux acheteurs potentiels en vue de cette importante journée. On constate donc que la période précédente aux ventes de taureaux est très occupée, avec une panoplie d’activités requises avant la tenue de la journée la plus payante de l’année pour plusieurs éleveurs Simmental. Cette période est également un des temps les plus occupés de l’année pour les associations de race, y compris pour la race Simmental. L’Association Simmental du Canada (ASC) est responsable des services liés à l’enregistrement des bovins Simmental au Canada. Avec cette responsabilité, on a ainsi l’obligation de s’assurer de l’intégrité et de l’exactitude des informations généalogiques complètes de tous les sujets pour lesquels on émet un certificat d’enregistrement. Le processus d’enregistrement est encadré par les statuts et règlements de l’ASC, lesquels sont approuvés par Agriculture et Agro-alimentaire Canada, et ils exigent que tout animal dont on fait la promotion ou la vente à titre de bovin Simmental doit être effectivement enregistré au livre généalogique de l’ASC. Précisons que les sujets identifiés par exemple “demande d’enregistrement en cours » ou bien « en attente du certificat d’enregistrement » ne sont donc pas encore enregistrés par l’Association Simmental du Canada et ne possèdent pas de numéro d’enregistrement. Heureusement, la plupart des taureaux vendus dans des ventes à titre de sujets Simmental possède bel et bien un numéro d’enregistrement. Toutefois, à chaque année, on rencontre des situations où ce n’est pas totalement vrai et, très souvent, il s’agit de cas pour lesquels l’ASC est en attente de recevoir du laboratoire la confirmation de la parenté. Cette situation survient généralement parce que l’éleveur n’a pas débuté suffisamment tôt le processus d’enregistrement et d’analyse de laboratoire. La plupart des associations de race de bovins de boucherie
du Canada font affaire avec le laboratoire NEOGEN situé à Edmonton en Alberta. Avant la période des ventes de taureaux, ce laboratoire effectue beaucoup de travail, et ils se font un devoir de compléter tout le processus de testage le plus rapidement possible. En réalité, pour compléter le processus de testage de vos échantillons, le laboratoire a besoin d’une période d’un mois afin de compléter le tout. Par conséquent, vous devez prévoir le délai requis de transmission de votre échantillon jusqu’au laboratoire, puis vous devez y ajouter environ vingt jours ouvrables. Bien qu’on ait transmis ce message plusieurs fois aux membres de l’ASC, nous recevons toujours des demandes faites à la dernière minute pour une analyse urgente, ce qui est un service que l’ASC ne peut tout simplement pas offrir. Toutes les analyses doivent être demandées par l’intermédiaire du bureau de l’ASC. La facturation de ces services dans votre compte est effectuée par notre personnel, et ceux-ci sont disponibles pour répondre à toutes vos questions. Toutefois, vous devez communiquer avec le bureau de l’ASC afin d’obtenir vos trousses de testage, APRÈS que vous ayez en mains les informations sur les sujets à être testés. En ayant ainsi en mains toutes les informations avant de communiquer avec le bureau pour obtenir votre trousse de testage, vous ferez en sorte que le processus se déroule plus facilement. On ne promet pas de traitement plus rapide ou encore la priorité à aucun membre, car tout le monde voudrait que le travail ait été fait hier. Au cours du processus de vérification de la parenté ou du père d’un sujet, il arrive occasionnellement qu’on identifie un animal pouvant être issu d’un père différent que celui déclaré, ou bien provenant d’une autre mère que celle déclarée. Le laboratoire constitue le dernier juge quant à la validation des ancêtres d’un animal et, dans tous les cas où les veaux sont nés suite à une transplantation embryonnaire (TE), nous devons absolument avoir reçu la parenté vérifiée avant de procéder à l’enregistrement des animaux. On ne retrouve pas une incidence d’erreur plus élevée chez la race Simmental comparativement aux autres races, et on doit en être tous fier. Le personnel du bureau de l’ASC, ainsi que le personnel du laboratoire NEOGEN, jouent un rôle très important afin qu’on vous fournisse et à vos clients les informations les plus précises possibles. Tout comme vous vous occupez des autres préparatifs pour votre vente, si vous travaillez vos dossiers d’enregistrement suffisamment à l’avance, vous ferez en sorte que tout le monde pourra effectuer son travail correctement, tout en vous donnant une marge pour faire face aux imprévus. Tout le succès possible avec vos ventes de taureaux!

D’où proviennent les ÉPD – De la production à la création d’un ÉPD
P
lusieurs producteurs bovins croient à tort que les ÉPD sont tirés des airs ou bien qu’ils soient le résultat d’informations imaginaires. En réalité, cela ne peut pas être plus loin de la vérité. Dans cet article, nous allons tenter d’expliquer (et dans certains cas, avec une grande simplification) comment les ÉPD sont obtenus. En ayant une compréhension des principes de base du développement et de la science employée pour obtenir les ÉPD, cela devrait nous aider à mieux comprendre comment ils fonctionnent et, en fait, qu’ils fonctionnent vraiment. Avec une telle compréhension, cela nous démontrera également pourquoi il est très important de transmettre des données de la plus haute qualité possible lors de la prise de données. Les phases de conception d’un ÉPD tournent autour du concept des Caractères d’Importance Économique (CIE). Un CIE correspond à un caractère ayant un impact direct sur la rentabilité et, dans notre situation, il s’agit de la production bovine. Cela veut dire que l’ÉPD devrait exprimer les différences génétiques pour les divers caractères, lesquelles ont chacune un impact direct soit sur les coûts ou sur les revenus. Par exemple, si on vend nos veaux au sevrage selon leur poids en livres, le poids au sevrage représente donc un CIE, car il nous permet de générer plus de revenus. Il y a des ÉPD pour des caractères qui ne sont pas considérés comme étant des CIE et, en général, on désigne ces caractères comme étant des indicateurs. Ceux-là sont souvent des reliquats historiques, car on possédait les données pour les calculer avant d’avoir la technologie disponible pour calculer un CIE. Le poids à la naissance enest un bon exemple. La technologie requise pour calculer les différences génétiques au niveau des poids à la naissance existait avant celle qu’on utilise pour calculer ce qui en fait nous engendre des coûts (soit la facilité de vêlage). Ou, dans d’autres cas, on les utilise car ils sont plus faciles à mesurer que les caractères qui sont effectivement des CIE. Par exemple, c’est plus facile de mesurer le poids à maturité d’une vache que son ingestion alimentaire aux pâturages. Les décisions concernant les ÉPD à considérer sont habituellement prises par une collaboration entre les chercheurs et les producteurs (avec l’implication des associations de race en tant qu’intermédiaires). Par exemple, les producteurs pourraient préciser qu’ils sont intéressés, ou qu’ils désirent que du travail soit effectué par rapport aux caractères liés aux carcasses de leurs bovins, en vue de mieux servir leur clientèle. L’association pourrait alors les aider avec le processus de cueillette de données, en accumulant toutes les données prises sur les carcasses et les mesures prises par ultrasons, et en travaillant avec les chercheurs afin de développer et de diffuser des ÉPD sur les caractères liés aux carcasses tels que le persillage ou bien la surface du muscle d’œil-de-longe. La cueillette des données n’est en réalité que lapremière étape. Un autre exemple bien actuel pourrait être le travail effectué par le centre IGS visant à recueillir les cotes mesurées par les éleveurs sur les pieds et membres de leurs bovins. Deuxièmement, les chercheurs et les producteurs peuvent identifier des caractères importants à considérer, et qui seraient plus difficiles à mesurer ou qui seraient de nouveaux caractères. Dans de tels cas, on bâtirait alors des bases de données dans des troupeaux de recherche tels que dans les universités, les stations de recherche ou chez des troupeaux collaborateurs. Un bon exemple de cette possibilité serait probablement tout le travail effectué sur le « PAP », lequel constitue une cote de résistance des bovins à la maladie des hauteurs (dans les montagnes).
Une fois qu’on a établi une base de données sur un caractère d’intérêt, les chercheurs se mettent alors au travail en tenant compte des données disponibles et de ce qu’elles veulent dire. Cela est bien entendu déterminé au niveau biologique et cette compréhension du fonctionnementdes processus naturels,de même que de leur forme d’expression, nous aidera avec notre prise de décision au niveau de la sélection. Le poids au sevrage exprimé en différence de poids relative entre des descendants peut en être un exemple simple. Je simplifie beaucoup ici, peu importe les nouvelles analyses en jeu touchant notre compréhension d’un caractère et de son expression, et grâce à notre compréhension de ce que veulent dire les données, cela nous renseigne alors sur la génétique reliée à ce caractère. Vous pouvez avoir vu les termes comme “estimé de la variance des composantes » ou encore « estimés de l’héritabilité ». Ceux-ci sont fondamentalement des termes scientifiques nous permettant de mieux comprendre les données et leur vitesse de distribution au sein d’une population. Je vais employer un exemple très simplifié touchant l’héritabilité et permettant d’illustrer ce dernier point. On peut dire que l’héritabilité est une manière de comprendre le niveau de variation des phénotypes pour un caractère donné, et qu’elle est le résultat des diverses génétiques observées pour un caractère. Au niveau des caractères possédant une héritabilité élevée, chaque donnée phénotypique enregistrée contient une foule d’informations touchant les génétiques impliquées. Les caractères ayant une faible héritabilité sont généralement influencés davantage par des effets de l’environnement, et chaque donnée phénotypique contient ainsi moins d’information génétique. L’héritabilité est calculée à partir de données. Encore ici, en employant une simplification extrême, on considère les différences réelles et espérées dans les données afin de calculer l’héritabilité. Le calcul de l`héritabilité est beaucoup plus complexe que ce qui est démontré ci-après mais cet exemple simplifié du calcul de la valeur d’héritabilité réalisé du poids à la naissance pourra, je l’espère, allumer certaines lumières chez vous quant au processus en cause. Supposons qu’on a une population d’animaux avec un poids moyen à la naissance de 80 livres, et que nous ayons sélectionné des parents de cette population ayant un poids moyen à la naissance de 70 livres. On pourrait espérer que les descendants de ces parents auraient un poids moyen de 70 livres, ou encore avec 10 livres de moins que la moyenne, si le poids à la naissance était influencé à 100 % par des facteurs génétiques. Supposons que le poids à la naissance moyen des descendants dans nos données est en fait de 77 livres. La variation espérée devait être 10 livres en moins, toutefois la différence réalisée était uniquement de 3 livres. L’héritabilité réalisée est ainsi la différence entre la population originale et la descendance des parents sélectionnés, divisée par la différence entre la moyenne de la population originale et la moyenne des parents sélectionnés.
Héritabilité Réalisée = PN moyen – PN réel = 80 – 77 = 3 = 0.30 PN moyen – PN espéré = 80 – 70 = 10 Encore là, voici un exemple très simplifié et qui ne vous fournit pas toutes les étapes du processus effectuées en arrière scène, toutefois il devrait vous donner une idée générale concernant quelques-uns des calculs requis pour calculer la contribution génétique d’un caractère et ensuite développer des ÉPD. Quand on répète un tel exercice à plus grande échelle (plusieurs milliers de données), et avec des données éditées, on peut ainsi obtenir une très bonne idée à savoir quelle portion des différences observées

peut être expliquée par la composante de la génétique additive. Il s’agit en fait de ce qu’on mentionnait plus haut au sujet des « composantes de la variance ». Il existe également des corrélations entre certaines données et elles sont inscrites au niveau biologique. Les corrélations ne “causent” pas un résultat génétique donné, mais elles nous permettent d’utiliser des données sur d’autres caractères associés afin d’améliorer notre aptitude à faire des prédictions. Un des meilleurs exemples est le poids à la naissance et la facilité de vêlage. Des poids à la naissance plus élevés sont associés avec davantage de naissances difficiles, toutefois ils ne sont pas la seule cause des vêlages plus difficiles. La forme du veau et l’environnement maternel jouent également des rôles importants. Tous ces caractères sont “associés” avec la facilité de vêlage. Avec l’utilisation d’informations concernant le poids à la naissance et les cotes de difficulté au vêlage, nous pouvons ainsi faire un meilleur travail d’estimation du potentiel génétique pour la facilité de vêlage. Une fois qu’on connait les facteurs biologiques et que les calculs soient faits, on peut alors calculer un ÉPD. Il s’agit en fait d’un processus de base par lequel on définira les groupes contemporains, puis on examinera comment les types génétiques des animaux se comporteront entre les divers groupes soumis aux mêmes conditions de régie et d’environnement, et tout en appliquant nos nouvelles composantes de la variance aux données. Au niveau du processus de développement des ÉPD, cela implique en partie de prendre les modèles développés initialement et les ÉPD estimés chez les bovins, pour ensuite les comparer avec les données réelles de performance chez les bovins (données recueillies), afin de valider si les prédictions se concrétisent effectivement au niveau des résultats espérés. La démarche inclut également l’épreuve ultime où les résultats des essais sont transmis aux éleveurs pour voir si ceux-ci correspondent à ce qu’ils constatent sur le terrain. On soumet également les ÉPD à d’autres partenaires de l’industrie et à la communauté scientifique afin qu’Ils
scrutent attentivement les résultats et qu’ils soumettent leurs questions. En règle générale, ce processus implique qu’on fasse plusieurs itérations, et on peut même être obligé de réanalyser les étapes antérieures effectuées sur lesdonnées et pour les caractères considérés. Bien que j’aie utilisé consciemment des exemples très simplifiés, cela était en partie pour mieux illustrer le fait que nos connaissances scientifiques s’améliorent et que nous acquérons une meilleure connaissance du fonctionnement d’une vache et de son interaction avec son environnement.Nous sommes alors capables de recueillir davantage d’informations génétiques à partir des divers phénotypes et des données généalogiques.Voici pourquoi les ÉPD sont amenés à changer au fil du temps. On améliore notre évaluation, nos logiciels, nos ordinateurs de même que notre cueillette des données et, par conséquent, les prédictions de nos ÉPD deviennent plus fiables. Tout comme un veau qui est né, la science derrière l’évaluation génétique continue d’évoluer et de s’améliorer. Même si cela ne fait pas partie de cet article, l’inclusion des données génomiques et sur l’ADN dans les évaluations constitue un bon exemple du progrès effectué. La technologie d’analyse de l’ADN progresse rapidement et cela vient améliorer notre capacité à calculer des prédictions génétiques encore plus précises et à pouvoir faire de meilleures comparaisons entre des sujets de race. Beaucoup de travail est effectué dans l’ombre avant qu’un ÉPD puisse voir le jour. Qu’il s’agisse de la détermination des caractères à évaluer et de s’assurer qu’ils soient d’importance économique, de la récolte des données sur ces caractères, de l’analyse des facteurs biologiques et de l’évaluation des données pour y déterminer les composantes génétiques des caractères, de l’évaluation comme telle et de la comparaison des résultats obtenus avec les données réelles sur le terrain, un ÉPD est définitivement basé sur des principes scientifiques et il représente l’outil de sélection le plus puissant disponible pour venir appuyer nos objectifs d’élevage.

Our Deepest Sympathies Archie Londry of Minnedosa, MB, beloved husband of the late Winona Londry entered into rest November 13, 2019 in Brandon, Manitoba at the age of 97 years. Archie William Londry was born on April 5, 1922 at Minnedosa, Manitoba. He attended school at Willow Grove, McBride and Minnedosa High School. He was a member of the Boys’ and Girls’ Club, the forerunner of 4-H. He was an R.C.A.F. pilot in WW II. On July 3, 1946 Archie married Winona Horner. Their family is son, David, his wife Marlynn and four grandchildren. During an eight-year period Archie worked for C.P.R., drove mules and horses, fired steam engines and flew aircraft before he began farming. His farming operation included purebred beef cattle as well as growing foundation, registered and certified seed grain. Archie’s main interest; however, was the cattle industry where he was president of the Hereford Association, the Simmental Association, and the Manitoba Cattle Breeders Association. He was Breed Representative to the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba and was involved with the Federal-Provincial Beef Cattle Performance Testing Association. Archie chaired the Artificial Insemination Advisory Board and served on a number of other cattle producer’s organizations.

Archie exported cattle, embryos and semen to many countries including the British Isles, Europe, Russia, Australia and South America. Many of the offspring were judged champions in their new homes. He was awarded the first A.O. Henuset Memorial Distinguished Service Award for betterment of Simmental in Manitoba. He influenced the cattle industry by raising bulls for three generations of local cattle producers. He judged at provincial, national and international shows and showed cattle at Manitoba Winter Fairs and Exhibitions for sixty-eight consecutive years, except during the war. 54 SC Feb 2020.indd 54

Our Deepest Sympathies Ernest “Erne” Neitz passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2019, at the age of 89 years, beloved husband of Irene Neitz of Medicine Hat. He also leaves to cherish his memory four children, Brenda (Norman) Duchscherer, Dean (Caroline) Neitz, Sheryl (Rick) Ahner and Gloria Neitz, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren and one brother Harry (Maureen) Neitz, in-laws Bill (Janet) Albrecht, Ann (Emil - predeceased) Lippert and Phyllis Albrecht and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Philip and Christina Neitz; two brothers Robert (Isabel) and Paul (Margaret); his sisters, Alvina (Gust) Jaster, Bertha “Betty” (Bill) Adam and Ruth Neitz as well as one great great grandson Gage. Ernie was a farmer but first and foremost he was a cattleman. Always looking to improve his predominately Hereford cow herd, he took an A.I. course. Through A.I. he sampled the breeds being imported from Europe. In 1971, they began crossing their Hereford cattle with Simmental to increase weaning weights and add milk to the herd, eventually building a herd of purebred Simmentals. Seven Full Blood Simmental heifers were imported from France and one from Germany. In the years that followed many champions and high sellers sold at places such as Canadian Western Agribition, Regina, Swift Current and Lloydminster bull sales. Cattle have sold across Canada, from Nova Scotia to BC, many US States, China and Mexico. Semen and embryos were exported to Brazil, Argentina, England and Australia to name a few. One bull, EDN Destiny, sold at Agribition, went on to be Grand Champion at Denver Stock Show the following year. Dean and Caroline continue to operate the ranch.

In June of 2017, Ernie moved to the Good Samaritan Society. Ernie had a wonderful sense of humor and always liked to tease and joke with the staff. They often mentioned how much they enjoyed him. He added life to the cottage he resided in. He suffered from dementia but we are thankful that the disease never stole the memory of his family. He always recognized us when we came to visit and welcomed us with a great big smile. Ernie was a hardworking and determined man but he had a really soft heart. I know Ernie is looking down on us today and I truly believe he knows just how loved he was and always will be.

School Program: Agronomy, University of Saskatchewan
Bryce was raised on a fourth-generation grain and cattle farm southeast of Viking, Alberta where he remains actively involved. The local 4-H club, sports programs and close community ties were highly influential in his upbringing and credits them for his values and beliefs. Bryce is enrolled in his fourth year at the University of Saskatchewan where he will complete a B.Sc. in Agriculture majoring in Agronomy. During his post-secondary studies Bryce is involved in various agriculture clubs as well as the Agriculture Students Association. Bryce is thankful for the friendships and opportunities the beef industry has provided him with. Most of all he would like to thank the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation for giving him the opportunity to further his industry knowledge through conferences, workshops and competitions. He hopes he can reciprocate their generosity one day by giving back to the industry and future youth.
Cassidy Pinkham Scholarship Won: FCSF $3,000
School Program: Agribusiness, Olds College
Cassidy Pinkham is 18 years old and currently attends Olds College in Agricultural Management. She calls home Fusion Livestock in Metcalfe, Ontario. When she is not away at school, she actively helps her family run their Purebred and Fullblood Simmental and Angus herd. Cassidy began participating in YCSA events at the age of five, when the Trillium was held in Metcalfe. Since then, Cassidy has been fortunate enough to participate in four additional Provincial Trillium Classics, four National Classics and has been a high point winner, earning a trip to the American Junior National “Chillin’ ” in July 2018. As the Simmental breed runs through their family, now three generations, she purchased her first Simmental in 2015 and that was the beginning of Broken Arrow Livestock. Cassidy is very thankful to the Friends of the Canadian Simmental Foundation for giving her, as well as other students, the opportunity to apply for scholarships such as this.

Katie Maxwell was raised on her family farm, Maxwell Simmentals, south of Viking, Alberta. Growing up, she played a lot of sports and was an active member in a variety of clubs and associations. Katie is currently living in Kelowna, British Columbia where she is in her third year of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at the University of British Columbia – Okanagan Campus. After graduation, Katie plans to start her nursing career in a rural community.
Tia Schram Tia Schram is from Bruderheim, Alberta, where her family owns and operates North Hill Simmentals. They have 550 head of Simmental cattle in addition to the 2000 acres that they grain farm. Tia has sat on the Alberta Young Canadian Simmental Association (AYCSA) board and shows cattle year round through junior and open shows.
Carissa Geddes Scholarship Won: Trevor Vance $2,000 School Program: Pre Vet, University of Prince Edward Island
Carissa Geddes is from Scotch Settlement, New Brunswick where her family raises Simmental and Simmental influence cattle. She started showing Simmental cattle in 4-H at the age of twelve and her passion for the agriculture industry and the Simmental breed has only gotten stronger since then. Growing up on her family’s farm, a career path in agriculture was almost inevitable. She is currently attending the University of Prince Edward Island, with the hopes of one day becoming a large animal veterinarian. Carissa is honoured to have been awarded the Trevor Vance Scholarship and would like to thank everyone who makes awards like these possible.

t’s bull buying time again – one of the most fun times of year for the beef cow-calf producer. Yes, one of the fun times, but also one of the most critical times of the year when both seedstock producers and commercial cow-calf cattlemen need to give a hard look at their current status and a futuristic preview of where they want to be in the years and decade ahead. As you well know, the genetic progression of a cowherd is usually a long term project where generation intervals are slow compared to our meat supply competitors in the swine and poultry businesses. The genetic component of your “factory,” or cowherd, that produces one of your annual biggest incomes, usually takes years to move in one direction or another. Matching the genetic potential of our cowherd and bull battery to your environment, land and feed supply, labor situation, and end market or beef consumer’s plate is your goal. Not an easy task, but this is the mission every cattleperson will handle… or let slide… your choice. No easy solutions, and no quick decision to take lightly, if you want to optimize your production and marketing goals. Through the entire year I am thinking of options and researching possible solutions for my own beef herd virtually every day as I go about my routine. One of my “pet peeves” is when I hear someone say, “I don’t need a new bull this year.” In my mind and experience, a better line of thinking is that a serious beef cattleman/businessman should ALWAYS be looking for a new herd bull. Whether you are a seedstock breeder or a commercial cow-calf producer you had better be ready to add
him to your bull lineup or semen tank. If you can improve what you already have you better plan to make room for it. Fortunately within the Simmental breed there are both large numbers to pick from, and several different types of registered Simmental cattle available. Whatever your program needs, there are probably Simmental bulls out there that can fill the need. Just to name a few general types, there are fullblood, domestic purebred, percentage, red and white color, blacks, reds, blaze faced, horned, polled, high growth, calving ease, bigger framed, smaller framed, higher milking ability, moderate milk, plus herds that can supply data to verify more traits that are required in your unique programs. Look through this February “Herd Sire” Issue, as well as our last month’s January “Commercial Country” Issue, for ads from seedstock suppliers across the country. Use these ads to source bulls or semen that can add to your herd’s genetic value. The decisions made in making your matings in 2020 are instrumental in determining your financial rewards this fall when trying to sell bred heifers, next year marketing the resulting 2021 born calves, throughout the next decade when the retained heifer calves become producing cows in your herd, and eventually determining the final value of your entire herd at your retirement dispersal sale or when you pass the herd on to your family’s next generation carrying on your enterprise.
