Welcome to our 22nd Annual Spring Bull Sale. If someone had told us when we purchased Sandan, that we would have twenty-two consecutive bull sales, I would have said they were crazy. I would like to take a moment to reflect and remember Don who passed in late summer. Don was a friend, a mentor and sometimes even a pain, but he was one of the great cattlemen I had the privilege to work with and know. His efforts, whether it was cattle or cooking, will be missed by many. Our 2019 lineup of fall bulls is the strongest and best. They are rugged and ready to cover more ground and more cows. They are grass run all summer then put on feed in the late fall, keeping them sound, growing and not overly fat. Mike brings us the yearling bulls and what a great set they are. In the group are several breeder quality bulls that will suit virtually any program. They have lots of hair, muscle, testicle and are optimal in frame size. They are all here at the farm so stop by and check them out. Plan to come early, view the bulls and be guests for our complimentary luncheon complete with hospitality. From the desk at T Bar Welcome to the Sandan Charolais/Springside Farms Annual Bull Sale, February 23rd at the Sandan Sale Headquarters, Erskine, Alberta. This being the 22nd Annual Bull Sale for George and Ursula, much Charolais history has been born at this famous location. Just consider the number of Charolais that have passed through this ring, then went on to sire all those market topping feeder calves! A powerful lineup awaits your inspection. Burly, rugged with tons of hair and testicle, the offering is diverse in type and genetics…suitable for any program and every budget. Money makers for all who invest. Sandan’s portion of the offering has a great set of fall bulls. After the children graduated, George and Ursula changed their herd to fall calving to assist them with labor. These fall bulls come to you with more maturity and size. They will cover more cows, more ground and add uniformity to your calf crop. Several bulls in the 2019 offering are tan and red factor for those who would like more color in their calves. Springside Farms bring a powerful yearling lineup to the sale. On the heels of a record-breaking female sale last fall, many of the bulls selling are brothers to the heifers. Most of the sires have been Springside developed and used as walking bulls…Mike selected them based on the strength of their maternal traits and performance. To many, these genetics are outcross, adding a new dimension to breeding programs. One of the top promotors of the Charolais breed is Mike Panasiuk. He lives and breathes Charolais! The majority of faces you see sale day will be familiar, as the repeat customer base is large. They are cowboys and cattlemen who understand “Charo-nomics.” Topping markets is not uncommon but weaning an extra 100 pounds of calf is another matter. In Memoriam

Don Pochylko Don Pochylko, born in 1938, was the son of a Polish immigrant who landed on Canadian soil on June 6, 1929 with just a one hundred dollar bill in his pocket. After renting several farms, Steve Pochylko, purchased the long standing family homestead in 1945, boasting a commercial cow herd of 100 cows and a moderate feedlot for the time of 400 head. When Don Pochylko was just 22 years old, he established SANDAN Charolais Farms with his wife Sandra. They started a dynasty in a breed of cattle that was uncharted in North America. Back in 1961, Don and his brother Andy operated a small feedlot and a small herd of commercial cows. That fall, Don purchased five half-blood Charolais bred cows for $285 each and decided to get into the Charolais business with limited funds and a very nervous banker. That same year, Don was a founding director of the Alberta Charolais Association and remained a director until 1983. He was also President 1975/76. He volunteered thousands of hours, especially in the early years as they were inventing the Association. The 1962 calves convinced Don to eliminate the commercials and go “Charolais all the way.” His bull calves in 1964 grossed $12,000 and he was launched and hooked. The following year, they succeeded in getting two import permits and in on the ground floor of the first importation of French Charolais. Don selected a female and a young bull “Aiglon”, his first calf Aiglon Jr. sold for $19,000 and 8 months later resold for $100,000! Aiglon Jr., then went on to be the most successful bull on the U.S show circuit. That was 1967. In 1968 the sale of an Aiglon daughter for $42,000 set a Canadian record at the World Sale in Calgary. In 1969, at the World Show in Calgary, six head were sold for $128,000. This was the start of the most exciting and profitable 10-15 year period in the history of the cattle industry in North America and perhaps the world. SANDAN was in the big leagues and Don was taking a leadership role and he knew how to make the best of it. This was also the year Cabotin was added as the next herdsire to breed the Aiglon females and Jaguar would be the next. Annual open houses started at the farm in 1970 attracting over 400 visitors annually. Open houses involved touring the cow herd as well as the best of the best show cattle on display. Races for the kids, pillow fights for the adults and of course beef and refreshments. The event evolved into the place where the Alberta Charolais Junior Show took place as well. Annual production sales began the first Sunday in December of 1974 in the newly built, state of the art facility dubbed the “cowplex.” The 6000 sq ft sales arena boasted an in-floor hot water heated veterinary area of 1600 sq ft, as well as an upper floor with fully equipped kitchen and recreation area used for meal preparation. Don always cooked the beef because it “has to be the best in the world.” Don also believed “the beef tastes better if the booze is free.” Up to his passing, Don shared with everyone his knowledge of the cattle business and mentored many breeders. As recent as the summer of 2018, Don had a letter to the editor published in “Today’s Angus Advantage”. The article is about the importance of line breeding in the purebred business. A small excerpt reads, “Line breeding or interbreeding concentrates on particular family lines within a cattle group it is probably the most misunderstood and ignored practice in the cattle business.” The SANDAN herd is and was the envy of every Charolais breeder worldwide, both in the pasture and on the show road. Don was the builder of the great white breed of cattle, leaving a history to never be duplicated. He will be missed!

Terms:

Terms & Conditions

The terms of the sale are cash or cheque, payable at par at the sale location. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement has been made; no invoicing on buyers in attendance, unless previous arrangements have been made. Every animal sells to the highest bidder and in cases of disputes, the auctioneerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decision will be final. Current exchange rates will be announced sale day. All monies are in Canadian funds.

Bidding:

Each animal will sell to the highest bidder... no by-bidding will be permitted. Disputes - Bidding will be reopened between the parties involved in dispute. If no further bidding is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decision on all disputes will be final.

Announcements:

All announcements made from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are therefore cautioned to pay close attention to such disclosures.

Breederâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Guarantee:

Should any bull fourteen (14) months of age or over fail to prove a breeder after being used on females known to be breeders, the matter shall be reported in writing to the seller within six (6) months following the date of purchase or six (6) months after the bull has reached fourteen (14) months of age. The seller will have the right and privilege of six (6) months to prove the bull a breeder. No guarantee is given that semen collected from the bull will freeze.

Phone, Mail, Wire Bids:

Bidders unable to attend the sale may phone, wire or mail their bids and instructions to the sale managers, auctioneer or special representatives. Bids must be received in sufficient time prior to the sale.

Delivery:

We will assist in arranging transportation wherever possible. Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold.

Insurance:

Will be available sale day. We strongly recommend that insurance is purchased for full value.

Liabilities:

All persons attend the sale at their own risk. The seller, facility owner and sale manager assume no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents that occur. It is understood that T Bar C Cattle Co. (2013) Ltd. is acting only as a medium between buyer and seller and is not responsible for any failure on the part of either party to live up to his obligations. Neither does T Bar C Cattle Co. (2013) Ltd. assume any financial obligations to collect or enforce collection of any monies between parties and any legal action that may in exceptional cases be taken must be between the buyer and the seller. T Bar C Cattle Co. (2013) Ltd. assumes no responsibility for any credit extended by the seller to the buyer. The buyer must look to the seller for fulfillment of all guarantees and representations made hereunder.

Rights and Obligations:

In cases where the animal is subjected to any hormonal or surgical reproduction techniques after the sale, this guarantee shall be null and void.

The above terms and conditions of the sale shall constitute a contract between the buyer and seller and be equally binding to both. Resale of animals following purchase in this sale shall constitute a separate transaction and the rights and obligations of the two parties connected thereto are not covered by the terms and conditions of this sale.

Each animal will carry papers issued by the Canadian Charolais Association. A certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer for each animal after payment has been made.
