CSA March Board and Committee Meetings Update

The Spring 2024 run of bull sales is complete and they were again successful for the most part supported mainly by renewed optimism from a strong 2023 feeder calf market. Later bull sales did see some pressure as we are still experiencing a reduction in the size of the Canadian commercial cow herd. While many producers who bought bred females late last year made some good investments, we need considerable moisture to develop in many areas of western Canada. A change in weather patterns has materialized in some parts of the prairies, however it is not as general as some producers had hoped. Simmental genetics are the foundation of any good cattle operation, however a little luck and some help from Mother Nature also helps the bottom line.

The Canadian Simmental Association directors, committee members traveled to Calgary for the CSA spring meetings March 17-19 and joined the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation (FCSF) directors for their board meeting. It was a busy time reporting on and discussing the progress made since our fall meetings, as well as discussing new business and plans for our 2024 summer and fall events. The World Simmental Fleckvieh Federation (WSFF) Congress and the Young Canadian Simmental Association (YCSA) National Classic will be the largest events held in Canada since 2006.

The FCSF board meeting led off the three-day session, and we discussed planning for the 2024 FCSF auction that will be held during the WSFF Congress in Olds. Rancier Farms, Garth and

Ang Rancier and family will donate a bred heifer for this year’s auction, and we thank them for their generosity! The FCSF board of directors also decided to commit to be the Premier sponsor for the Congress and YCSA show, and we greatly appreciate that commitment. Funding from the Foundation will also assist YCSA members on their travel costs to the event and hopefully attract more out of province cattle to participate.

On the CSA Promotion committee’s Monday agenda was a review of the Simmental Country and Commercial Country magazines. We are always looking for ways to improve production and content in our magazines while being mindful of efficiency and the bottom line financially. The 2024 Simmental Award of Excellence (AOE) show recognition program was reviewed and we will be working with the Provincial Simmental Associations to streamline and improve the program in some key areas. Red Flame Ranch has again agreed to sponsor the buckles for the Female and Male Grand Champions. The World Simmental Fleckvieh Federation Congress plans were a large part of the Promotion Committee and CSA board meetings and Jennie Mutch and her Congress committee, along with CSA staff, have committed many hours towards planning an event that we will all be proud of. Registrations are now open and full details can be found through the registration link on the CSA homepage www.simmental.com. Canada last hosted the world’s Simmental breeders in 2006 and we will again do our best to maintain the

4

standards expected of the CSA and our membership with some of our famous hospitality. There are also many breeders from across Canada registering and we look forward to having everyone join us in Alberta for our Simmental activities and celebration.

The Breed Improvement Committee (BIC) meeting followed on Monday with discussion around various CSA genetic improvement programs, as well as computer and registry system processes, and ways we can provide better service to the CSA membership. The development of the Canadian Beef Improvement Network (CBIN) continues to move forward with Sandy Russell and the CBBC board of directors guiding the process. DNA rebates are being applied in two options to THE members and complete details are found in the last few editions of the CSA e-News and on our website.

The CSA Board of Director’s meeting wrapped up the three day session and included reporting and vetting of the previous day’s committee discussions and their recommendations. In addition to that, Trinity Martin and Kelsey Manske joined the meeting to provide the YCSA report which highlighted the plans they are making towards the 2024 National Classic as well as the subcommittee that is reviewing the YCSA rules and regulations. A thorough discussion was had around re-instating the CSA’s Exclusive Use AI Sire program and full details of the changes to it will be made available as soon as possible.

The CSA board also decided to host the 2024 CSA Annual General meeting in an online format via Zoom in October. While there was thought given to holding this year’s AGM in conjunction with the National Show at FarmFair, it was felt that this would detract from the show and place unneeded stress on the exhibitors during an already busy week. Watch future CSA communications for further details. The CSA AGM will return to a face-to-face format in July 2025 when it is held in conjunction with the YCSA National Classic in Weyburn, Saskatchewan.

The CSA will be distributing member voting packages soon which will include an option of submitting your votes electronically. With the October date of the AGM these packages will be sent somewhat later than last year. They will also include information on any by-law changes, and we will be adding one new director position for the Province of BC to the CSA board of directors. This will bring the number of directors to ten and will officially separate the joint director position shared by B.C. and the Atlantic Canada region. Watch the mail for your ballot package and remember to follow the instructions closely to avoid spoiling your ballots.

We encourage you to contact one of your CSA directors or myself for further information regarding anything mentioned in this article, and check www.simmental.com or our monthly E-News for updates. All the best with your spring seeding operations and may Mother Nature smile on us all throughout the 2024 growing season!

Single Gene Inheritance

Some of the most common questions received by the CSA office involve single gene inheritance. Every animal receives 2 copies of each gene. One from each parent. Most traits in an animal are the result of several pairs of genes interacting with the environment. For example, weaning weight, longevity or disease resistance are all affected by multiple genes. These traits usually occur on a continuum. For example, weaning weights in a herd may range from 450 to 900 pounds. Other traits are impacted by single genes. This most often involves discreet traits like colour or horns. An animal is either red or black, horned or polled. There are many good single gene DNA tests available however there are a few nuances to a lot of these traits..

Horned/Polled/Scurs

This is a pretty common question. The polled gene is what is termed “dominant” to the horned gene. This means that if the animal only needs 1 of the 2 genes from their parents to be polled and they will exhibit the polled trait. If the animal has 2 copies of the polled gene, then they are homozygous polled (PP). They will appear polled and can only produce polled offspring. If they have one polled and one horned gene, then they are heterozygous polled (Ph or Ph). The animal will appear polled but can have horned offspring. If the animal is horned, then it has 2 copies of the horn gene (hh), and no copies of the polled gene.

Homo Polled Parents – result is all Homo Polled Offspring

Homo Polled/Hetero Polled Parents – result is 50% homo polled and 50% hetero polled offspring

Hetero Polled Parents – result is 25% homo polled, 50% hetero polled and 25% horned offspring

Scurs or loose horns are located at a separate gene and throw in the wrinkle of being what we call sex linked. For an animal to express scurs they must first be polled. A horned animal can not have scurs since their horns are in the way, but they can carry the scur gene.

A polled calf with a single copy of the scur gene will express scurs if it is a male. If the calf is a female, it will require 2 copies of the gene (one from each parent) in order to express the scurs. This is what we refer to as sex-linked.

This means that it is possible for a calf to have a DNA test that shows they are homozygous polled, and yet still express scurs, since the scur is occurring from a different gene, located at a different point in the calf’s DNA.

Black/Red

Black and Red is determined by a single gene inheritance as well. Black is dominant to red (the same as polled is to horned). When we test a calf and the result comes back as Homo Black, it means that the animal carries 2 copies of the black gene, so it can only pass on black and thus all of the offspring should be black. This gets slightly more complex in Simmental, as there is actually a 3rd variation of the gene beyond black and red. This is “Red Charlie”. Red Charlie is a gene variation that acts the same as a red gene, however it is located at a slightly different place on the animal’s DNA so an animal can be homozygous black (has 2 copies of the black gene at location 1), but also be a Red Charlie gene carrier at a different spot on the DNA. When 2 copies of Red Charlie are combined from the parent stock (calf gets 2 copies of RC) then the calf will come out red.

Another variation on this theme within Simmental populations is the presence of a “Wild Type” allele. Wild type can be thought of as a third variation of the colour gene, and it is actually the original version of colour from which red and black mutated. Black cattle that carry a wild type allele will appear black. Cattle that carry two wild type alleles can vary from reddish brown to brownish black. Cattle that carry a red allele and a wild type allele will appear to range from red to reddish black (Think Tarentaise type colouring). This trait may also be somewhat sex linked with male testosterone increasing the darkness of the colouring.

Diluter

Diluter is a gene on a separate location on the cattle DNA, that creates a nuance that interacts with colour. The diluter gene interacts with black calves to make them grey and with red cattle to make them lighter red in colour. Think of it as a shading gene.

There are a lot of other single gene traits that influence cattle, particularly when it comes to different colour patterns. All of the traits described in this article are available as individual tests available through the CSA DNA testing options. If you search the lab results tab for animals on the CSA search site, you can see the results of these single trait tests for animals that have been tested. DNA testing for single trait characteristics may be something you wish to investigate for your own herd.

VALUE ADDED Ranch

Simmental cattle have served this Montana ranch well for more than 30 years

As the Sayers family in Northwest Montana have been rebuilding their cow herd over the past few years, they’ve considered a number of factors including the quality of their purebred, crossbred and commercial Simmental cattle, the opportunities for value added marketing, and tailoring their beef operation to the environment.

It’s not about numbers for numbers sake, says Sean Sayers, who owns and operates Red Flame Ranch along with his father Bob Sayers at Loma, MT — that’s a community near Fort Benton, about half way between Havre and Great Falls. He says it is about finding balance in producing high quality cattle that meet customer demands while raising those cattle in a sustainable manor on native short grass prairie. “It’s not solely about increasing herd size just for the sake of having high numbers; it also needs to be economically viable,” he says.

Red Flame Ranch had a much larger herd, until a major grass fire about 15 years ago disrupted their grazing system.

“The fire spared the buildings but it took out about 21 miles of fencing,” says Sayers. “With no way to control cattle we had to downside considerably. In the past few years we have been rebuilding the herd, but the focus has been on quality as well as what the ranch can support and what makes economic sense. We’ve rebuilt fences, but we’ve also had three or perhaps four years of serious drought. So the emphasis has been on producing good quality cattle that are efficient under these environmental conditions. Simmental cattle just fit the bill in all aspects.”

Bob Sayers established Red Flame Ranch near the banks of the Missouri River in 1992. He was actually born and raised in Alberta and for many years operated a successful international business as an oil well fire fighter. The ranch is named after his business. Along with being a fire fighter the senior Sayers has worn many hats over his lifetime including being a cowboy in and out of the arena, an award winning auctioneer, an inventor and a livestock hauler to name a few.

Sean was actually born in Calgary, but grew up in Montana. He’s had varied interests including being an avid hockey player, later switching to rodeo in college, and becoming a major promoter of steer wrestling at collegiate, amateur and pro levels. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in petroleum engineering, with a minor in business management at Montana Tech University and today divides his time between ranching in Montana and providing engineering services in the Texas oilfields.

The Sayers maintain a Canadian connection by being a continuous donator to the Canadian Simmental Association Award of Excellence program that promotes and recognizes the top registered bulls and females in the Simmental breed that are exhibited at shows, such as the Canadian Western Agribition each year.

10

Red Flame Ranch today runs about 150 head of cow-calf pairs, predominantly Simmental-Angus cross mother cows with high Simmental percentage that are exposed to full blood Simmental bulls. They also have some cows with higher Fleckvieh influence as well.

“We have a few commercial cattle, but most of the herd is registered or at least paperable,” says Sean. “We have some excellent breeding stock if people are interested, but a lot of our focus in recent years has been in producing cattle for our Farm to Table program. The Sim-Angus cross produces excellent cattle for this market.”

Any cattle that don’t make the cut as breeding stock or replacements are marketed for beef. Some will be sold through a local auction mart, while an increasing number are channelled into an on-farm feeding program that sees them through to finishing weight. “They are raised on grass and finished on a grain-based mixed ration,” he says. “The only time they leave the ranch is for processing. Carcasses are processed and dry aged at the USDA certified facility for 21-day minimum and then cut and packed and put into retail sales or a restaurant stream.”

Along with supplying beef to a local restaurant, they have also developed an expanding market for their frozen beef products among customers across the U.S. “We began rebuilding the herd about five years ago and then as COVID hit people seemed to become more interested in where their beef was coming from,” says Sayers. “So it just seemed like

Also more recently, after attending the 2022 World Simmental Fleckvieh Congress in Austria, they diversified into a Europeanstyle beef product, which involves finishing and processing virgin bulls. At the congress they met with Simmental producers from around, as well as Bruce Holmquist, general manager of the Canadian Simmental Association.

“It was just a great networking opportunity to meet other producers and learn about new marketing opportunities,” says Sayers. “The European style meat idea, is something we learned about during the Austrian tour.”

“Finishing virgin bulls is a specialty market designed for those particularly health conscious consumers looking for high quality meat, produced without any antibiotics or hormones,” he says. “These bulls require some special handling to make sure they are kept away from females, aren’t stressed or bruised by fighting or injured out on the range. They are raised in a quiet and comfortable environment on feed for about 180 days and basically just eat and sleep.” From the Montana ranch, frozen meat products are properly packaged for speedy — within 24 hour — courier delivery from one side of the country to the other.

With customers able to book orders on line, the Red Flame Ranch beef program has steadily grown over the years, with Sayers expecting to market about 50 head this year. “It’s a value added market that has become an important part of ranch economics,” says Sean. “So we hope to keep expanding our sales.”

11

Simmental cattle have been an excellent fit for Red Flame Ranch since day one. The Sayers focus on purebred cattle to acquire the genetics for breeding stock, but also for other traits that include size, good temperament, excellent milk production, good confirmation, good feed efficiency, high average daily gain and excellent meat quality.

“Then you cross those Simmental genetics with Angus genetics and you get the combination of size and marbling and an excellent carcass that falls into the prime, choice and select grades,” he says. “It’s a quality meat product and pounds pay.”

The ranch has a 200 x 300 foot calving shelter in the yard. All the mother cows are brought into the yard and monitored for the winter with calving beginning in March. “Another reason we like Simmental is that they can handle higher birth weight calves,” says Sayers. “Younger animals have no problem delivering calves in the 75 to 80 pound birth weight range, while some of the older cows can easily handle 90 to 100 pound birth weight calves. Some other beef breeds may be calving in that 55 to 60 pound birth weight range, so we are starting out with an extra 30 to 40 pounds heavier calf and again pounds pay.“

As calving season wraps up, cow-calf pairs head out to native range pasture usually in May. The start date of the grazing season can be adjusted depending on growing conditions. And similarly, depending on rainfall during the summer, cow-calf pairs are usually brought home for weaning in early September.

“Depending on growing season conditions, in recent dry years we have had to supplement the native pasture with alfalfa hay,” says Sayers. “We also provide a proper mineral supplement 365 days, which is adjusted during the year to meet the needs of animal growth, breeding and reproduction. Again depending on the quality of pasture we also supply cattle with high quality protein lick tubs on pasture.”

With beef production being both an art and science, Sayers says using good quality genetics is important, but he also sees value in performance data. “We started in 2023 and now 2024 will be the first full year we’ve outfitted the whole herd with RFID tags,” says Sayers. “I am no doubt influenced by my engineering mindset, but I believe it is important to have good data on herd performance. We will be weighing cows and calves several times during the year, as well as looking at feed intake, and average daily gain and over all performance. We will let the data make the decision on how we are doing with overall efficiency.”

Breeding season begins in late June or early July although going forward they may change breeding dates, and ultimately calving dates for part of the herd just to stagger the finishing dates of feeder cattle over more of the year.

Red Flame Ranch has built herd numbers fairly quickly over the past five to six years and while there are always opportunities to take another big leap in increasing herd size, Sayers says the environment is calling the shots. “We’ve had these several dry growing seasons so I don’t want to have a big increase in cattle numbers and then not have the grass to support them, or be faced with increased feeding costs.

“Simmentals are well suited to our environment. They can handle the heat and they can handle the cold,” he says. “They’ve got good feet and legs and can walk whether its on the flat prairie or the coulees and draws along the river. They’ve got the size and genetics to produce high performing calves and excellent beef carcass. Using our own replacement heifers, we will continue to increase the herd at a more gradual pace and hopefully use the numbers to improve on overall production efficiency.”

National Voice Of Cattle Producers

The 2024 Federal Budget came down on April 16 and it’s clear our advocacy efforts are making a difference.

In late March, the government announced the Advanced Payment Program (APP) will have a $250,000 interest-free limit for the 2024 program year. We are also glad to see that the government will continue to review APP to improve program delivery and reduce the administrative burden for producers. We have farms and ranches to tend to and the less paperwork, the better. Without this push, the amount would have reverted back to $100,000. We will keep pursuing multi-year interest-free commitments moving forward rather than year to year changes.

We will keep pushing for multi-year interest-free commitments moving forward rather than year to year changes.

We are also cautiously optimistic that the Government recognized the Livestock Tax Deferral’s effectiveness in providing relief for producers in the Budget and recognized it as a crucial tool for producers in times of natural disasters such as drought or floods. The CCA has also requested a change to the Income Tax Act to include all classes of cattle and to allow producers to self-elect when they need to use the deferral.

After years of advocacy, we are cautiously optimistic that the Government will work quickly in partnership with the beef sector to design a framework that addresses the weather-related challenges beef producers are facing. This can’t happen quickly enough.

Changes to capital gains in the Budget have the potential to be negative for producers and time will tell how exactly the proposed changes will impact us. The fuel tax credit proposed for 2019 to 2024 also could be promising for ranchers and farmers, but the amount of red tape required to qualify has not yet been laid out. Our staff team will be further assessing these potential

opportunities and will continue to advocate for relief and positive supports as they are brought forward for official Government approval.

More positive news is the Government’s supporting efforts to amend the Copyright Act to help achieve interoperability between devices and equipment. We look forward to taking part in consultations in June and to seeing more details announced shortly.

South of the border, we’re keeping the communication lines wide open with our US counterparts on all fronts including anything that is affecting beef herds down south. The Voluntary Product of USA labelling announcement happened in April but doesn’t go into effect until 2026 so we won’t be able to assess any effects it may have on Canadian beef until at least some time after that. We are also working with CFIA and keeping a very close eye on what’s happening in the dairy industry with the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) virus. It hasn’t been reported in any cattle (dairy or beef) in Canada but rest assured that our CCA team is on top of the latest scientific developments on this issue.

In April, we travel to South Korea and in May we’ll spend some time in the Indo Pacific to cultivate trade relationships and pave the way for increased trade opportunities.

It’s shaping up to be a better spring than last year and strong market signals indicate growth potential for producers.

We hope you’ve had a successful calving season and encourage herd growth so we can try to keep up with demand for our quality Canadian beef at home and abroad. We’ll pave the way for more markets, and we hope conditions are supportive for increased production to meet these opportunities.

Lastly, on behalf of the entire CCA Board, I would like to thank our outgoing representatives and welcome our new Board representatives for 2024-25. Your contributions are valued and appreciated, and we are thankful for your time served.

ADVICE

Correctable Bull Penile Issues

Over the last several decades in veterinary medicine fertility and hence functionality of the breeding bull has been attended to more and more. At the start of my career in the early 80’s breeding soundness exams (BSE) were increasing in frequency. Now we are to the point where most large producers are having breeding soundness exams done yearly. Virtually every purebred bull calf sold over 12-15 months will have one performed by the purebred breeder’s veterinarian. The consistency of this exam I believe is very good in the profession. The “reliabull” tape has made in my opinion scrotal circumference measurements about as accurate and repeatable among veterinarians as we can hope for. With this checking of bulls we find penile issues most of which can be corrected. Also in the life of the breeding bull penile problems develop. It behooves veterinarians to attempt medical or surgical treatment because of the value of the bulls and prognosis is often reasonable. Insurance companies want due diligence done and treatments attempted depending on the overall prognosis. Large animal veterinarians need to have some idea as to prognosis, cost, outcome; and either perform the task themselves or refer the procedure to another veterinarian that will complete the surgery treatment and care. Sometimes our goal is simply to collect semen for freezing and that as well can have a very desirable outcome and carry forward the genetics of that bull.

The penile problems we are all most familiar with in the young breeding bulls at their semen tests are frenulums, hair rings and penile warts. I have done other articles on them in the past. This is why I think it is ideal to insure you get protrusion to observe the penis has no abnormalities.

Some veterinarians sedate to insure protrusion happens. I encourage veterinarians to tackle most warts and see what the outcome will be. This often involves another retest or reexamination a couple weeks later.

Most wart removals come along quite well and I am pleasantly surprised by the outcome. If warts are wrapped around near the tip of the penis there is a much more guarded prognosis results. Depending on the potential value of the bull more than one attempt can be made. Sedate, freeze locally in most cases and be ready to ligate large bleeders or oversew the cut is what veterinarians would be ready for. On the deep ones be ever cognizant of the urethra. Most veterinarians that have purebred cattle breeders as clients will run into warts. They need to be indicated on the BSE form for full transparency and rechecked to insure there has not been regrowth.

Older breeding bulls penile problems stem from cuts, prolapses of the sheath as well as the extremely rare Persistent frenulum on end of bull penis Side view of same wart near end of penis
18
Large wart near end of penis that was easily removable

corkscrew and rainbow deviations. Cuts require visualization to determine severity-using hydrotherapy and if prolapsed, NSAID’s are given. If found acutely then flushing of the area plus the tincture of time is the suggested course of action. Rest from breeding will often yield an 80 % prognosis on return to complete function. This is usually excellent news considering the value of most of our breeding bulls. We often see the unfound cuts that have healed with bulls from the year before so they do have a great ability to heal. With paraphimosis (a prolapsed sheath) hydrotherapy should be frequent and once the penis can be retracted inside the sheath go back to the tincture of time.

Severe non-resolving prolapse of the sheath may result in the need for a circumcisn and although these are done infrequently they can be curative and there are recognized techniques out there but removal of the extraneous sheath and attaching the ends together is really the technique in a nutshell. You must remember we are taking an unusable bull and potentially giving him the ability to breed again so if returned to function that is a very good win. If it doesn’t work

slaughter for salvage is still in the cards. Attempt these and give lots of time for rest. I find a tilt table with good access to the underbelly is best and standard aftercare may be successful. Again in real valuable bulls we are sometimes correcting the condition so good quality clean semen can be collected and frozen.

As a summary issues involving the bovine penis outcomes are often very favorable and your veterinarian can give an idea as to prognosis to return to function and the time period necessary. Since the vast majority of these cuts with or without prolapse occur during the breeding season we are often thinking next year’s breeding season. Often purebred breeder hear about these issues on their sold bulls and can help advise the producer what to do while they often can come up with a replacement bull to tide the producer over. As a veterinarian we can provide a very valuable service to your expensive herd sires. This is never truer than today as breeding bulls become higher in value and may at times be hard to replace genetically. You must also think if you correct the condition there may be several years breeding to be captured by that bull in the future. Here’s to an uneventful productive and fertile breeding season everyone with few penile problems in our bulls.

As has been mentioned in previous articles a swelling right ahead of the scrotum may indicate a broken penis and a very poor prognosis so most are shipped. A swelling on the sheath ahead of the scrotum may indicate a cut sheath or scrotum and in most cases a very good prognosis. So don’t write off a yearling or older herd sire for swelling in the sheath they may very well recover to breed again. To bring down the swelling NSAId’s may be in order but flushing and hydrotherapy to bring down the swelling may very well be curative.
