INTRODUCTION “BARN BURNIN’ BULL SALE”

Holy cow! Where did 50 years go to? Our family hosted our very first sale in February of 1971. We have run continuously since that date. This sale is special as it hits the 50th year milestone of sales. Thousands of bulls sold. Three auctioneers, two with the name Blacklock and one Poley. Many, many ringmen, thousands of customers and friends. Lots of sale help and five different sale venues. The first two sales were held in the old Weiller and Williams Stockyards in Lloydminster. Then we moved to the Lloydminster Exhibition. Our sale was the first bull sale held in the Stockade Building and then we moved to the Saskatchewan Building. By 1997 we were ready to move home for our first on the ranch sale. It was great, except 30 days after the sale the barn burnt down. We rebuilt with a few minor changes. This will be the 23rd sale in the new barn. Hosting our bull sale is a huge effort for our family. Sherry and I have worked together on it since the start, raising our kids through it all. Connor and Ted are here with us full-time and are doing much of the outside work as well as sale preparation. It certainly lessens the load. It has always been a family effort since the very beginning with everyone pitching in doing whatever it takes to make it work. Many people have asked us how and why we do the sale. At the end of the day, the people that we deal with... our customers and many are friends are our real true inspiration. We all talk about the weather and maybe focus on it too much. We have witnessed 50 sale weeks from warm to cold (-50°C wind chill at one in the early ‘90s), blizzard to beautiful with water running down the road. BSE craziness and Iraq wars. The only constant is change and never two the same. We have learned to charge ahead and do the best we can. Here is hoping for better markets and nice weather. Adam, Tenille, Benton, Ellington, Ted, Bill, Sherry, Bulls and managing them still consumes a lot of our days. Everyone around the ranch including Bailey, Connor, Rebecca and Layne our staff is passionate about our business. It takes everyone to make the wheels go around the ranch and it is greatly appreciated. Some days are better than others, but we always find a way through. A big thank you to everyone here. Please take some time to go through our comprehensive sale catalogue as each and every bull is profiled with as much meaningful data as we can gather. Our data and programs are laid out in Clear And Simple English, straight forward and easy to follow. We have not published EPD values in some places as we are really having trouble believing some EPDs. Some days we think it is garbage in and garbage out. We are humbled each year to have so many people consider us for their replacement bull needs. We are full-time bull people and work very hard to make everything work for our new customers. Start planning to make your ranch run a bit easier and move the cows to more grazing, put out more bales and plan to be with us for January 31 and February 1, 2020. Call, email, text or fax “any time-any day” and any one of us can sort through the bulls or heifers before the sale. Please come and enjoy our hospitality. We look forward to seeing you on Friday, January 31 and sale day, February 1, 2020.
