Meet Your
Canadian Galloway Association 2017-2018 Directors Brian Robertson, President Tri-R-Way Galloways, Clearwater, Alberta I grew up near Phelpston, Ontario and my interest and introduction to Galloway Cattle was influenced by my parents and grandfather. My wife Trisha and I along with our new son Wyatt raise purebred Galloway and Angus cattle on our farm in Clearwater County, Alberta. My family has been raising Galloway cattle for over 30 years primarily blacks and some reds.
President’s Message
Welcome to the 2018 edition of the Canadian Galloway Association’s Advance. It is with great pleasure to be addressing you as the President of the CGA for another term. Joining me on the executive is Vanessa Beach as Vice-President, Simon Legace as Secretary Treasurer and Ron Black as Secretary. The other directors include Jim King, Ward Marshall, Kelly Worthington, Chris Schapp and Sarah Middleton. In 2017 the Association experienced its usual challenges and hope that some progress can be made in the year ahead. Purebred sales have been consistent with past years with bulls and females. The biggest increase in interest has been the smaller scale farms and gate to plate type operations that feel Galloway best fits their operations because of there ability to graze less desirable forages, winter hardiness and their delicious marbled meat. There was promotion of Galloway cattle through the various Farm shows and Fall Fairs. I commend the breeders who take the time out of their busy schedules to put in the endless amounts of effort to get cattle ready for such events and show them off. Some 4-H’ers also had success with showing there Galloway projects. The association also advertised in the Canadian Cattlemen Magazine and plan to look into other means of advertising for 2018. The Association is always looking for members with bright new ideas to join our committees. If you would like to get involved please contact any of the directors. You can submit photos, media and information to be featured on the website. Please don’t hesitate to share it with us and others interested in this great breed.

We are looking forward to working with other breeders to continue maintaining and promoting this fantastic breed! Simon Legace , Executive Secretary Ferme du Rapide SENC., St-Hyacinthe, Quebec I bought the 150 acres family farm in 1985 with a herd of Herefords and enlarged the size of the farm to 400 acres of soybeans and wheat. In 1997 I bought my first Belted Galloway and since then I have been keeping a small herd of 20 Belted Galloway cows. Ward Marshall, Director Future Farms, Innisfail, Alberta I have grown up on a farm and just started my first year of University at Lethbridge taking Agricultural Business. I recently have entered into the Galloway business. I have had great guidance and assistance from Jim King and Brian Robertson into the introduction to the growth of the breed. I look forward to meeting numerous breeders and the success within the breed and cattle industry. Kelly Worthington, Director Whispering Wind Galloways, Carstairs, Alberta Raising registered red and black Galloway cattle, as well as commercial Galloway crosses. We also run a small on-farm freezer beef program for our commercial crosses which have become very popular with our customers.

In March, our juniors showed at the Junior Beef Expo in London, Ontario. First went to Flynn Reinhart with Glenfiddich Delilah, 2nd to Shelby McIlwraith with Glenfiddich Dinara and 3rd to Jenny Charest with Glenfiddich Dusk. Our weather proved uncooperative throughout June, prolonging first cut of hay. In July, Brad and Colleen Card, Cranberry Hill Galloways hosted a field day. We toured Greenbrook Farms, Ryan and Jayne Green, to see their intensive grass management program. After we BBQ’ d and talked Galloways, back at Brad and Colleen’s. It was nice to meet new people and catch up with old friends. We had 3 new Belted Galloway breeders and one new solid breeder join our association this summer.
The Scott VanKampen Memorial Junior Showmanship class was held at Erin Fall Fair. Ruth Dedman, Morgan and Justis Unsworth and Shelby McIlwraith participated. Shelby won the class. In November, the Association had a booth and display at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. Glenfiddich Galloways sent a bull calf and a yearling heifer for the display. There was much interest in the cattle. Thanks to John McIlwraith, Tony Onufer, Laurie Cocking and Marie Blake for helping me educate the public about our cattle.
We decided to revisit the International Plowing Match this September held in Walton, Ontario. Again the rain played havoc, so much so that the show was canceled for a day. Despite this, the show did go on with record turnouts. The booth was personed by Marie Blake and family, Clayton Salter, Bev Burtis and Brad Card. Suncrest, Sunrise, and Glenfiddich Galloways promoted Galloways through various local fall fairs. In the 4H achievement days, Ruth Dedman, and Chelsea Weiler, showed heifer calves in Waterloo County. Ruth placed 1st with Demandale Eowyn and Chelsea, 2nd with Demandale Everlea. In the Royal Masterfeeds Junior Heifer show, Everlea placed 1st with, Eowyn, 2nd was Shelby McIlwraith, showing Glenfiddich Dinara, won Champion Showperson and Champion Heifer at her achievement day at Rockton Fair.

C GA Junior Members Share... Hi, my name is Shelby Mcilwraith and 2017 was my fifth year in 4-H. I showed a big dun heifer and had a very successful show season with her. I started out the year at Junior Beef in London, Ontario and from there I went to five fairs with my heifer and a couple of calves. guard brandishing their pitch forks! In November 1951 George and Betty, along with their sons John and Alistair emigrated to Canada to start their new adventure. Isobel and Heather arrived soon after, then Dawn. All proud Canadians with plenty of Scottish blood! Betty and George both enjoyed their retirement on the farm in Laurel. They loved their cattle and the farming life. She loved playing cards, was involved in the seniors center and sponsoring the 4-H kids and watching them show. Mum loved to have fun with a spark in her eyes! Greatly involved in the community, Mum always said if she got a dollar from everyone that called her Granny, she’d be rich. She was loved by everyone making her a millionaire in her own right. Mum was always fun to be around and is missed greatly.
WWII began on her 16th birthday and with a few months, Betty was off to Wigtownshire and served with the Womens Land Army. There she met wee Geordie in 1943, with his bright blue eyes. They were married at the end of the war, on Nov 15, 1944 in Glasgow, with the Women’s Land Army girls as their ceremonial honour Canadian Galloway Advance 2018

CGA Registration Activity In 2017 Registration activity in the Canadian Galloway Association in 2017 saw a 1% decrease in the number of animals registered compared to 2016. There were a total of 418 animals registered in 2017, consisting of 120 bulls and 298 heifers. This number includes 310 solid colour Galloways, 61 Belted Galloways, 27 White Galloways and 20 Belted Galloway Appendix animals. Of the solid colour animals, 209 were black, 49 were dun and 52 were red. Of the animals registered, 404 were from natural matings, 10 from A.I. matings and 4 by embryo transplant. Of the total registrations, 201, comprising 48%, were from Ontario and 189, comprising 45%, from Alberta, with the remaining 7% coming from the other provinces and the U.S.A. There were 9 registrations in Manitoba, 6 in Saskatchewan, 5 in British Columbia, and 4 each in Quebec and the U.S.A. The number of transfers was 36% higher than in 2016, with a total of 287 animals of all types having been transferred. 13 animals were transferred for export to the United States in 2017. The membership in the Association for 2017 totaled 99, including 88 senior members, 11 associate members and 3 junior members. Submitted by Ron Black Secretary-Treasurer

It is disappointing that the Sydney Royal Easter Show Cattle Committee has decided to increase the number of head entered to qualify for a separate breed judging Group from 2018. It is understood that the Cattle Committee would like to have both Galloway and Belted Galloway classed as one breed. Such comments don’t give much hope to having White Galloways accepted as a separate breed any time soon. On the topic of showing it was great to see the continued involvement of Orange High School and Northholm Grammar both in showing and in assisting our members prepare their Canadian Galloway Advance 2018

The students from both schools were a credit to themselves and their schools in the way they pitched in to help breeders in the maintenance, preparation and showing of the cattle. Galloways Australia encourages its breeders to develop relationships with schools in order to promote the breeds in particular and an interest in agriculture in general.

As an Association, we are looking forward to meeting our international colleagues at the 2018 World Galloway Congress in Melbourne. As a follow up to the congress, Galloways Australia is offering a unique opportunity for our international visitors to take part in a privately organized, small group tour of some highlights of Australia’s National Capital, rural New South Wales, Sydney and the Gold Coast of Queensland. Australia is a huge country and the distances are enormous in relation to Europe so we hope this 11 day tour (October 5 - 16, 2018) will provide a taste of country and coast with some Galloway cattle to see on the way. Greg and Cathy followed up the success of this by holding a field day on their farm at Edale which included talks on Galloways, sausage making and finally the highlight, eating the sausages the sixty plus attendees had a hand in making. Galloways Australia members continue to promote the three separate Galloway breeds with live exhibits at the Murrumbateman, Moss Vale, Mudgee, Tocal (New South Wales) and AgFEST(Tasmania) field days. Field days provide valuable opportunities for marketing both the cattle breeds and our breed association. Several breeders provide cattle for the displays and Association members assist with the set up of the stall and providing face to face information on the greatness of the Galloway Family of breeds.
I guess the major issue of the year has been the introduction of the new Livestock Production Assurance Program rules as they relate to on farm bio-security, animal welfare practices

2017 the year that was, not as busy as 2016 as we did not have the excitement of welcoming everyone to the world congress, but we do have some exciting news, we have secured a government grant to establish a quality assurance scheme, help with marketing and encourage links with the meat and restaurant trade also for three learning journeys for future farmers and butchers, the first one being four young members travelling to National western stock show in Denver, USA and in 2018 one farmer and one butcher to attend the Galloway World Congress. For ongoing information please see our web page. Thankfully our spring and autumn sales saw an improvement from 2016, with nearly 100% clearance and increased averages, Galloways were certainly wanted and that continued though out the year, which included nearly 100 pedigree Galloways being exported to Spain. Below is a report on our Castle Douglas. All our sales are reported on our web site, so if you want more information – please refer to www.gallowaycattlesociety.co.uk At our AGM, our new constitution was approved, which included new titles for our committees, we no longer have Council men but Trustees, a much trendier name! Also at the AGM we welcomed a new Chairman, Mr John Finlay from
the noted Blackcraig Galloway herd. As we have a new chairman, we had to say a huge thank you to our outgoing Chairman Scott McKinnon from Klondyke. Scott also had the extra work load of the World Congress, this was no mean feat to organise and move about all these people, Scott help make all these decisions and was one of the major factors that the World Congress was so successful. Turning to the summer shows, I say summer as we have had a terrible summer, which was recorded as the UK’s 11th wettest on record. Here in Scotland it has been the fifth wettest Summer on record with Western Scotland being the wettest region of the UK with 509.6mm up to 30 August. No wonder shows have been cancelled and many farmers struggling with harvest, which some of our members not securing their silage and straw still to bale. At least our national show Royal Highland Show was dry and a full report is below. The English premier show The Great Yorkshire show was not as lucky, in fact it started raining that day and never stopped!!! Again this report is on our web site. After the success of the 2016 National show it was decided that there would be no National Show in 2017 and at our last Trustee’s meeting, it was again decided there would be no National Show in 2018.

It is with great sadness I report the death of our past Secretary Mr Alex McDonald, many of you will know Alex, Alex was appointed Secretary in 1990 and was Secretary for 14 years, during that time he witnessed the great demand of Galloways from Germany, BSE, Foot and Mouth disease and Government “meddling”. He very much enjoyed working with the breeders, members and friends and was thankful for their hospitality and friendship. Alex was a great help and friend to the Galloways even after he retired, always willing to help at shows and sales and could always be depended on for advice. He will be sorely missed by many. As we welcome 2018, many breeders are wondering what the future holds as our livelihood depends on decisions by Government, talks for Brexit are progress, but little has been said regards to Agriculture. Meanwhile we will keep farming, that is what we do and the Galloway will prove her worth when profit margins get tight. On behalf of the UK Galloway Cattle Society I would like to wish all our friends around the World a very happy and healthy 2018 and a very successful World Congress in Melbourne, Australia.

Galloways were very much wanted at the spring show and sale held in Wallets Marts, Castle Douglas, with only four bulls returning home, 100% clearance on the females and all sections showing an increase in averages. At the pre sale show, both the male and female champions were from the Finlay Family, John, Ann and son Iain from Blackcraig, Corsock, Castle Douglas. The male champion BlackcraigXcaliber is by the home bred bull Blackcraig Volume and out of Blackcraig Dusty U446 he sold for 4000gns to Billy Welsh, Lochurr, Moniaive, Thornhill, Dumfries and Galloway. The female champion Blackcraig Bertha W560 sold to judge Mr Robert Marshall, who is now stockman for Balavil Estate, Kingussie, Invernessshire for 4400gns. This September 2014 born Blackcraig Sam daughter is out of Blackcraig Joan T420 and was one of six heifers to travel north to establish this new herd alongside the newly formed Aberdeen Angus herd. Balavil also purchased the reserve female champion Countess Wendy of Nether Cleugh from Peter Hunter Blair, Nether Cleugh, Dalry, this April, 2015 born Blackcraig Tom Tom daughter is out of Countess Sophie of Nether Cleugh for 3000gns. Also heading north was Blackcraig Bertha W548 for 3200gns and Blackcraig Hilda W556 for 3100gns, these are Blackcraig Sam and Blackcraig Rasputin daughters along with the champion of the unled section was Amber 1st of Troloss, from TrolossFarms aBlackcraig Dec daughter for 2000gns. The Finlays also received 3800gns for Blackcraig Star W584 a daughter of Blackcraig Sid and out of a German female, Schoenweider Star which Iain purchased when he was judging in Germany, this October 2014 born incalf heifer sold to Mr B Crawshaw, Broadley Field Farm, Whitworth,
Rochdale. Mr Crawshaw also took home a Romesbeoch heifer for 2000gns - Beauty 1691 of Romesbeoch, this 26month old is by Turbo Tam of Nether Cleugh, the reserve male champion at 2016 Royal Highland show and out of the show cow Beauty 1185 of Romesbeoch. The male reserve champion and two year old champion was Troloss Knockout from Troloss Farms Ltd, Elvanfoot, Biggar. Knockout is by Blackcraig Dec and is out of Troloss Hannah, this 23 month old is off home to Blairvockie, Rowardennan, Drymen, with the Junior Vice Chairman Duncan Maxwell to be used in his Ben Lomond herd. The top price of 5000gns was achieved twice, first for Louis of Balgray from husband and wife team David and Rosemarie Cornthwaite, Balgray, Lockerbie, Dumfries and Galloway, this 22 month old is one of the first sons to be sold off the 2500gns Ballavair Black Magic and is out of Penninghame Queen, a maternal sister to Penninghame Susan, the female record price holder. He is going overseas to Germany with frequent visitor Horst Kraft, who was one of 20 Germans attending the sale.
John and Ann Finlay also received Reserve Senior Championship with BlackcraigXman, he is by the ET sire Blackcraig Vagabond which goes back to a Canadian bull Glenfiddich Brodie and out of Rose 29th of Auchenhay. He returned home to Blackcraig. The Junior Champion Yorker of Romesbeoch from Jim & Selina Ross, Romesbeoch, Shawhead, is by the Romesbeoch’s senior stock sire Turbo Tam of Nether Cleugh and out of Beauty 1185 of Romesbeoch who is no stranger to the show ring, having been successfully shown over the last four years. She is also dam of the 12500gns bull Windsor of Romesbeoch. Yorker born in December 2015 is off for pedigree breeding at Troloss Farms Ltd, Troloss Farm, Elvanfoot, Biggar for 1800gns. Messrs Wallace, Over Barskeoch, Dalry, received the Reserve Junior Championship award with Zorro of Over Barskeoch, he is the last bull to be sold off Viper of Over Barskeoch a previous junior male champion at the Royal Highland Show and out of Pepsi Max of Over Barskeoch, one of the best cows at Over Barskeoch, he sold to DW Gourlay& Co, Craigmuie, Moniaive for 4000gns.
Also selling for 5000gns was Xavi of Kilnstown from Andrew Waugh and son Douglas from Kilnstown Farm, Bewcastle, he is by the 11000gns Coldplay of Fingland and out of Doreen 31st of Kilnstown. This September 2015 bull is off home with Jim Roberson, Becks, Langholm.
Mr Robert McTurk, Barlaes, Dalry sold two Barack Obama of Fingland sons - Barlaes Online a 25 month old for 3600gns to RKG Farms, Irelandton, Twynholm Kirkcudbright and Barlaes Onward for 4000gns, this 23 month old travelled south to Roskilly Farms, Nutley, Tavistock, Devon.
The Reserve 2 Year old Male Champion was Bowanhill William Wallace from John Tullie, Bowanhill, Teviothead, Hawick, this April 2015 born Ben Lomond Rolex son was ably shown by son Andrew and is off home with RA & JP Cornelius, West Rose, St Breward, Bodmin for 2000gns.
Receiving the Andros Perpetual Challenge cup for best pair in the unled section was Mr Hugh Guthrie, Ardoch, Dalry, Castle Douglas, this pair of heifers Kathleen 600183 of Ardoch and Marguerite of Ardoch* sold to Mr S Smith, Thesmeak Farm, Alturnen, Launceston for 750gns and to M/s Hogg, Milnholm, Langholm for 1150gns respectively.

Judge: Mr Andrew McConchie, Stryde Cottage, 8 Ramsay Wood, Gatehouse of Fleet, Kirkcudbrightshire Galloways awarded Native Interbreed Team Award and Interbreed Junior Championship. For the second year running, the impressive bull Blackcraig Sid from John, Ann, Iain and Kelly Finlay from Blackcraig, Corsock, Castle Douglas, clinched the Breed Champion award at Scotland’s premier event the Royal Highland Show. The 7 year old, senior stock bull Blackcraig Sid is by the homebred bull Blackcraig Nimrod, who is a previous National show winner and out of Finmac Libby N195 an embryo John and Willie MacLean imported from Australia - Libby is also a former show cow winning at the Royal Highland show three times. Sid has had a successful show career to date, as he was unbeaten last year, awards included Interbreed and National Show champion at Dumfries show. Taking the overall reserve and female title was Jim and Selina Ross, Romesbeoch, Shawhead, Dumfries with Nerys 1668 of Romesbeoch, this September 2014 born Turbo Tam of Nether Cleugh daughter came first in the largest class of the day, she is out of the famous Nerys line. This was her second show outing. Her sire Turbo Tam of Nether Cleugh was reserve male champion in a repeat of the male
championships from last year’s Highland show. Turbo Tam was purchased at 2013 Spring show and sale at Castle Douglas for 2000gns, he is by Blackcraig Quest and out of Nerys Patricia of Nether Cleugh.
Kingussie, brought out by stockman Robert Marshall, this 9month old bull is by Blackcraig Vagabond and out of Blackcraig Bertha which Robert sold to Balavil when he joined the company.
Troloss Farms, Elvanfoot, by Biggar took home the reserve female champion with Sensation 1st of Troloss, expertly brought out by stockman Joe Cockburn stood second to the female and reserve overall champion, she is by Blackcraig Dec – Troloss’s senior stock sire which was purchased in 2014 for 3000gns and out of Ben Lomond Keepsake.
As new exhibitors to the Galloway section, Balavil Estates received the new exhibitors prize of £100 which is presented by David and Debs Heath.
Silverbell 12th of Gall-way from Jason and Sarah Wareham, Little Tottingworth, Broadoak, East Sussex was awarded Galloway Junior Champion and then later on in the week was awarded supreme interbreed Junior Championship - a first for the Galloway breed. Silverbell 12th a 20 month old Lochnagar of Gall-way daughter and out of the renowned Silverbell family was purchased privately from Dennis and Margaret Gall on their retirement. Tips for Putting Together Your Bull Buying Check List
Biography: Dr. Colin Palmer is an Associate Professor of Theriogenology (Animal Reproduction) at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Originally from Nova Scotia, Dr. Palmer worked in mixed practices in Ontario and British Columbia and has owned/operated a practice in Saskatchewan. Dr. Palmer along with his wife Kim and children Lauren, Emily and Carter run a herd of purebred Red Angus cattle under the KC Cattle Co. name. If you don’t know what you are looking for there’s a good chance you won’t buy what your herd needs! Let’s face it … there are a lot of really good bulls out there and a lot of really good seedstock producers. Before heading out to shop for bulls I think every commercial cattleperson has to decide what kind of herd he or she wants to have. Since we are all breeding cows to generate calves it really comes down to what we intend to do with those calves. Seedstock producers will generally want to produce bulls first and replacement females second with all other marketing structures falling in line behind the primary goal. Commercial cattle producers market weaned calves, produce replacement females or retain ownership of calves to feed through to slaughter. I have not included backgrounding here as that will eventually lead to a live calf sold or a finished animal being sold on the rail. You need to decide what it is you are doing, or what you want to do with your calves and ultimately your herd. Marketing of weaned calves is the most significant source of revenue on most commercial cow-calf operations followed by the sale of cull females. Culling animals, in turn, requires that replacements be purchased or retained, and if expansion is in your plans more will be needed than are sold. When selling weaned calves your income will largely be determined by pounds of calf offered up on market day. If this is the case, then the best bulls for you should be the ones with the greatest potential to produce heavier calves at weaning. Since you are not retaining ownership for slaughter you shouldn’t really concern yourself with carcass trait data. Milking ability, stayability, and even show ribbons really are not that important for you either. Growth traits including birth weight, weaning weight and yearling weight are all highly correlated – a fact that must be considered carefully as you rank your sale picks. The highest weaning weights are likely to be associated with the highest birth weights, but not always. Shorter gestations may be one reason high growth animals have lower than expected birth weights. When you see numbers that appear to be inconsistent don’t be shy about asking questions and doing a little investigating. Trade-offs will have to be made. Producers selling weaned calves must also be concerned about calving ease. Dystocia is the number 1 killer of very young calves and we all know that big calves are not worth much when they are dead! Put in a different context, if you expect to gain 50 pounds per calf with your new bull then each and every oversized dead calf will be worth 12, 6-weight calves. I’d take a smaller live calf over a big dead one any day. Having said that, little teeny weeny calves often turn out to be underachievers so I think it is a good idea to know what your calves typically weigh at birth and what cows like yours are capable of calving. The same holds true for your breeding heifers. If you are looking for a bull to produce replacement females then you have a different set of priorities. Again calving ease is very important and can’t be ignored. Managing birth weight in your herd can be one of those gifts that keeps on giving, or not; you decide! When bred

to the same bull, big birthweight heifers will produce bigger calves than their lighter birth weight herd mates. Birth weight is the biggest single predictor of dystocia and at some point a threshold will be reached and those big heifers could start having trouble. Milk production, fertility, and longevity balanced with growth performance are all things that should be on your list when shopping for a herd builder. Expected progeny differences (EPDs) are very useful for comparing bulls and are more reliable than the bull’s own performance because they take into account the performance of his relatives. Using weaning weight for example, if pasture conditions were excellent and every imaginable supplement was provided your pick of the pen could have a tremendous actual weaning weight; however, his weaning weight EPD would be much more modest, and of course, realistic. Likewise, Calving Ease Direct and Birth Weight EPDs are more reliable than looking at the bull’s own birth weight. These data should be available for every purebred bull (representing a breed that calculates EPDs) that you might be considering. If you are not comfortable with EPDs then do what you can to change that. Most of the time you will see that the bull’s own performance is in line with the EPDs or vice versa. Use all of these numbers to help make up your short list of bulls. No less important are what I call the “soft” traits. These are the ones that don’t often have EPDs associated with them and usually require more time to investigate. Structural soundness – feet and legs are very important. First, the bull needs to get around to breed and should be a viable breeder for at least the next few years. Secondly, any replacements kept from this bull will hopefully remain in the herd for at least a decade. When buying a herd builder check out the teats and udder on the dam and other female relatives. Temperament is very important regardless of your herd goals. There are enough good cattle nowadays why should anyone put up with the bad ones! High strung bulls pass on their crazy to the next generation amazingly well. Fertility and frame score should definitely be on your list, especially, when keeping replacements. Females sired by bulls with larger scrotal circumferences have greater lifetime fertility and heifers from these bulls tend to reach puberty sooner. Is your new bull likely to increase, decrease or maintain your current cow size. If you don’t pay attention to mature size who knows what your herd is going to look like. If frame score is not available assessing the bull’s parents and other family members will also provide this information. One tool I like to use is the breed association websites to gather more information. Through these sites I can find out how a bull ranked amongst his contemporary herd mates and how many progeny his mother has produced, when they were born and their current status. I can also conduct a detailed examination of the pedigree. For most commercial producers this might be too time consuming, but it sure is helpful when searching for your next purebred herd sire.
