"It is certainly an honour as well as humbling to have our farm and our beef program recognized by the association," says Derek Westman, who along with family members owns and operates Westman Farms.

On the farm that was started in the mid-1920s, has for about the past 50 years relied on a cross breeding program built around Simmental genetics to produce a high performing commercial cow herd that in turn is able to produce equally high performing steers and top quality replacement heifers.

"My dad was instrumental in helping to build the foundation of the herd we have today. I wish he could have been here to share in this award." (Murray Westman passed away in 2018.)

Westman Farms, located about 15 miles south of Vermillion, first started by Derek's great grandfather John Batke in 1926 has been a long-standing mixed farming operation. On the beef side they run about 700 head of mature cows — that includes Red and Black Simmental crossed with Red and Black Angus, along with a commercial herd of straight-bred Full Blood Simmentals.

"Ever since my dad and grandparents introduced the Simmental cattle to the farm in the 1970s they have just had an excellent fit in producing the type of cattle that we wanted and worked well with our operation. Each season our steers are sought after by cattle feeders and our long-standing replacement bred heifer program attracts buyers from British Columbia to Quebec.

Along with the mature cowherd, for nearly 25 years they have also run about 700 head of Simmental/Angus crossbred heifers, to be pastured for the summer and bred, to be sold later in the year as bred replacement heifers to other producers.

On the cropping side they produce about 6,000 acres of annual crops that include wheat, canola, peas and corn. Those acres include about 300 acres of soft white wheat and 1,000 acres of corn cut for silage as part of the winter-feeding ration.

Story By Lee Hart

Their passion for the agriculture industry along with a commitment to producing quality cattle over four generations of farming, were no doubt two of the main factors earning the Westman family of Vermillion, AB recognition as the Alberta Simmental Association Commercial Breeders of the Year for 2022.

The Westman family

Principals of the farm today include Derek and his wife Chelsy and their two young children Taryn, 3, and Kenzi, 6, along with Derek's mom Leslie, still involved with the farm activities.

The mature cows and heifers are managed on pasture in different groups with the cows moving through 14 different pastures and the heifers using five different pastures during the grazing season.

Westman Farms has entered their cattle in commercial cattle competitions and won awards at various shows including Canadian Western Agribition in Regina, Farm Fair in Edmonton, as well as local livestock shows.

"We produce cattle but one of the greatest thing about this industry is the people you meet along the way. Whether they be other producers or just people involved in some aspect of the agriculture industry they are just tremendous people. This award is certainly an honour and certainly humbling. We look forward to just keep on with what we're doing and seeing what the future holds."

Depending on the year and growing conditions everything heads out to rented and owned pasture in the first half of May with some hauled as far west as Mayerthorpe, north to Beaverdam and some east into

In early October, once all calves are weaned, the mature cows move onto native grass pasture in the coulees and flats along the Battle River. With good quality native grass and proper mineral supplements they will remain on this native pasture until they are brought home and placed on winter feed that includes silage and straw. Around Christmas time, they walk the 13-mile trek home to the main yard. The cowherd begins calving about February 10.

FALL GRAZING

THE BRED HEIFER PROGRAM

The Westman’s have paid attention to producing quality cattle over the years. "We purchase high performing, high-end bulls that have strong maternal traits," says Derek. "We are looking for bulls to pass along traits that produce good udders and milking ability as well as good feet and legs in our heifer calves. And we also want steers with a strong growth curve."

From the 2021 calf crop for example, overall the steers averaged 780 pound weaning weights, with four truckloads sold to buyers in Ontario averaging 840 Overpounds.theyears

preg checked in two batches in late September or early October. As soon as the heifer calves are weaned, their mothers are preg checked, while the other half of the herd is preg checked soon after steer calves are delivered to their new homes. All bred heifers are put on feed at the farm headquarters. Westman will select about 80 head to be kept as replacements for their own cowherd.

After preg checking and other selection criteria, about 500 head of bred heifers will be available for the annual heifer sale held on the farm the first Monday of December. “We’ve been holding this bred heifer sale for the past 23 years, we welcome everyone to join us on December 5th this year" says Westman. These good quality cattle have attracted buyers from all across Western Canada and even Ontario and Quebec.

The cowherd, calves and bred heifers are brought home from pasture in late September and placed on aftermath grazing on the farm. Soon after, the steer calves are sold through DLMS (Direct Livestock Marketing Services) on-line auction services, but remain on the farm until weaning and delivery by Themid-October.cowsare

as much as I can to check the cattle on pasture during grazing season, but we also have some excellent people on site in the various areas who keep an eye on things for us," says Westman.

"This native grass pasture along the river is good quality grass that includes prairie wool and keeps the cows in good condition," says Westman. "And grazing up and down the hills and coulees along the river is good exercise keeping them in good shape."

All mature cows and heifers are bred through natural service, with bulls turned out with the heifers at two different times — April 23 and June 15 to stagger their calving times. Bulls are turned out with the cowherd May 1.

PRODUCTION CYCLE

Replacement heifers begin calving in late January while the main cow herd begins calving around February 10. Calving usually wraps up about the end of March. Cow-calf pairs are fed in nearby paddocks and pastures until early May.

"We just have a real passion for agriculture as well as for Simmental cattle," says Derek. "That is something I learned from my parents growing up and it has just continued over the years. That passion fuels us to always strive to do our best to produce quality "Andcattle.”it is not just myself, and my wife and my mother that can take the credit. We have a great crew of people working with us, as well as the help and support of friends, neighbours, and family. It would be a huge list to name those who help us with this whole operation through out the year."

The heifers that will be pastured for the summer and sold as bred replacement heifers later in the year include their own stock, as well as replacement calves purchased from fellow customers with Westman's genetics in their herds. These are farms that "have a similar approach in their breeding program, raising heifers with strong maternal strengths."

Westman says while they work hard, they also make time to play, as well. "It is important to take a break once in a while and enjoy life and spending time with the family," he says.

"As May comes around, Chelsy and farm staff take care of the cattle as I turn my attention to field work and getting the crop seeded," says Derek. "Our employees are an integral part of this operation."

From The

One of the most recent changes at the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association has been a rebranding that includes a new logo and changing its name to the Canadian Cattle Association. This was done in an attempt to re-brand the organization with an identity that is gender neutral as it relates to the producers CCA represents and to foster the image of a more inclusive organization as the CCA press release

Making a Difference within the Industry

To say that 2021 was a challenge for many cattle producers is an understatement as much of western Canada dealt with a shortage of livestock feed due to a severe drought situation. The soil moisture map released by Environment Canada the end of July 2021 showed that approximately 95 percent of the west had less than 40 percent reserve moisture. While that is nothing new for some areas, seldom are those conditions so wide-spread. Not all areas have made a complete turnaround with their moisture situation in 2022 but most have greatly improved and in fact some areas have had excessive moisture that has created other challenges. Early hay listings show that some hay sellers still have their sights set extremely high with regards to pricing but it is likely that there will be great resistance from cattle producers to pay 10 cents plus for a second year in a row.

10

This change has struck a nerve with some producers who have made it known that they are considering asking for a refund of the Check-off funding that they paid on their animals that they sold over the previous year. As one producer explained to me “it’s to make a statement that we aren’t happy with things like that! “ That approach is somewhat misguided as our check-off dollars are split into two allocations, National and Provincial, and it is only the provincial portion that is refundable. Asking for a refund directly impacts the respective province that the cattle were sold from which reduces funding for beef promotion, producer and consumer education, and industry development.

At the time of writing many of us are preparing to attend the Canadian Beef Industry Conference in Penticton, B.C. This is annual event that brings together beef producers from all regions of Canada and to conduct the meetings of various committees and industry organizations that are connected to the Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) and National Cattle Feeders Association. Through the week-long event, a wide range of topics such as trade, environment, animal health, research, check-off funding and other beef industry policy that impacts all segments of the beef production chain will be discussed.

This refreshed logo, visual identity and positioning reaffirms CCA’s commitment to supporting communities, embracing innovation and contributing to the overall sustainability of Canada’s food system. “For 90 years, CCA has been the voice of beef farmers and ranchers across the country,” said Reg Schellenberg, CCA President. “Our organization has grown to include the 60,000 members we represent today. It is important that our name, logo and brand also grow and be reflective of how our organization has evolved.” While Canadians continue to take action on sustainability, CCA builds on generations of industry-wide ecological practices, which include preserving biodiversity, sequestering carbon, restoring Canada’s wetlands, upcycling resources, protecting endangered species and providing the majority of wildlife habitat on food-producing lands. “We will continue to do what we do best – raise world-class beef for Canadians and international consumers,” continued Schellenberg. “As an association, we want to further emphasize the importance of cattle to Canada’s environment, heritage, food security and economy. Our actions reflect the desire for greater sustainability and improved food production because we want to produce beef that makes every Canadian proud.”

On another positive note there are reports of some producers locking in some excellent prices for their calves and yearlings, prices appear to be ready to increase offering a chance for cow/calf producers to recover some of last year’s losses. This will be one of the smallest Canadian calf crops for sale over the past several decades, although we have seen that Canadian feedlots are willing to feed a higher percentage of dairy influenced cattle, many sourced from the U.S..

“Today, stated; the Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) launched a new brand identity, highlighting the strong and diverse group invested in raising some of the world’s best beef — one that is dynamic, forward-thinking, climate positive and quintessentially Canadian. Formerly the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association, the brand refresh includes a new CCA logo created with inspiration by key elements of importance to the organization: our country, our cattle, and our environment.

Beef is under pressure from many directions and we all have witnessed the discussions regarding competing protein alternatives, as well as policies impacting animal welfare and environmental sustainability. I would suggest that this is not a time for a reduction in check-off funding as the beef industry tries to deal with those as well as other issues. A much more practical approach is to contact your Provincial and National Cattle Association directors directly or to attend one of the many regional meetings that will be held this fall or through the winter. Run for the board of director’s positions when they become available and contribute your own time and talents to make the changes you feel are needed. The world is run by those who show up and it is always a more productive approach to work together in making the necessary changes within our organizations than it is to shoot inwardly at ourselves.

Work done by Melton et al. (1995 BIF Proceedings) states that Reproduction has a 5 times larger impact than growth and 10 times that of carcass in terms of cow herd profitability in when looking at traditional systems. As cow herds grow and move towards more defined relationships such as direct sales or retained ownership the emphasis on reproduction declines and carcass increases, but the productivity of the female is still the trump card in terms of profit. A profit focused, customer-based mindset provides an opportunity for Simmental breeders to take advantage of CSA programs with a maternal mindset to target the breed’s maternal advantages and focus on obtaining cow herd data on fertility right through to carcass and DNA. This is challenge that represents the four nickels (paradigm) shift from traditional data collection strategies, but it may serve to position your operation moving forward.

14

The CSA has previously offered and continues to provide various rebate programs for females for both DNA genotyping and carcass ultrasound. These programs provide opportunity for members to gain insight into the genomic makeup of their replacement females, ensure pedigree integrity and obtain increased knowledge regarding the carcass merit of their cow herd. Remember, unlike testing a sale bull, this information stays in the herd and can be used to help inform mating decisions in the Despitefuture.the

4 Nickels – The Cow Side Paradigm

Please take the time to look into various CSA offerings with a cow herd focus this fall. It may provide a great opportunity to get back much more than your 4 nickels worth.

Breed IMPROVEMENT

CSA offers a variety of useful tools for getting at the cow side of the equation. The first and most basic tool is the Total Herd Enrolment or THE program. The concept of complete herd reporting allows us to identify females that are actively producing every year on a breed wide scale. Reporting of every producing female every year, and the result allows us to improve genetic evaluation of performance but it also identifies important characteristics such as longevity. Additionally, the THE inventory provides the opportunity to record breeding information on replacement heifers and resulting pregnancy diagnosis. There is no charge for THE for yearling females that are reported as exposed, pregnancy tested and not retained on inventory, but the data helps us to identify those genetics that are more likely to conceive as replacement heifers.

It is likewise interesting and perhaps not too surprising that much of the investment made in data collection and evaluation is done on bulls. This includes herd sires being high density genotyped, but also yearling and two year old sale bulls being weighed, genotyped and ultra-sounded for carcass merit. There is some degree of logic in this as a herd sire will influence many calves and sale bulls generate immediate revenue.

The CSA under guidance of the member led Breed Improvement Committee has also enabled collection of maternal traits such as mothering ability and cow temperament. There is good response to this by members and several thousand records have been collected to date. This data represents one of the most complete maternal data sets available on these traits today. Members can also report cow body condition and weight and work is ongoing to analyse and evaluate this mature size data.

By Sean McGrath Breed Improvement Coordinator for the Canadian Simmental Association

Most Simmental breeders are quick to talk to you about cow families or the maternal lineage on a bull. This makes a lot of sense with the Simmental breed providing a lot of the preferred maternal characteristics to the nation’s commercial cowherd.

Unfortunately, in this data collection process, females are often forgotten or overlooked as a premium source of information for building the cow herd. One key advantage of measuring females is that the data will stay in your cowherd, providing background for several years across multiple progeny to inform breeding decisions and knowledge of offspring. Obtaining this data on the cow herd over time is a tremendous service to the commercial industry, but may be more difficult to market at a sale.

Simmental breed being built on a maternal foundation and the total herd reporting system, thinking about data collection on females sometimes challenges our existing paradigms. Choices such as DNA testing or ultrasound are often made on bulls and not on females, even though heifers will benefit from confirmed parentage and often express more variation in carcass traits. As breeders, we also tend to focus on selecting individuals and often forget that the baseline of the entire herd is what makes the individual stand out.

to see that making Livestock Price Insurance Program (LPIP) a nationally available, permanent program was not included in the initial Sustainable CAP framework. Attention must be paid to expanding the availability of LPIP and reducing associated premium costs, similar to what is done in other sectors. LPIP is an especially important tool in supporting our next generation of cattle producers, as it helps increase their ability to secure financing and survive market downturns. We will continue our advocacy efforts on this front.

Advocacy is a big part of what we do and how we communicate recommendations to policymakers matters. The Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) takes a team approach, and we strive to share how the current and emerging issues can impact the various sectors within our industry. Our goal is to always bring workable solutions to government for their consideration.

Wepredictable.weredisappointed

With the complexity of the issues relating to tackling climate change, ensuring food security, and ensuring a vibrant Canadian agriculture industry, the details of these commitments will be important. You can count on CCA to be at the table representing your interests and ensuring the best outcome possible for beef producers across Canada.

The AgriStability program remains a cornerstone of the BRM suite. The payment compensation rate was raised from 70 per cent to 80 per cent at an estimated cost of $72 million. The program’s payment trigger remains unchanged at 70 per cent and its payments cap out at $3 million. However, an increased compensation rate is a big step in the right direction and builds on the actions taken in March 2021 to drop the reference margin limit (RML). We are awaiting to hear details on the consultation process that will take place with industry on the review of AgriStability and how it can be improved to make it faster, simpler, and more

The BRM suite of programs is a critical piece of Sustainable CAP. The announced changes are intended to enhance sector resiliency, so that producers can better “anticipate, mitigate and respond to risks,” which is consistent with FPT Ministers’ “Guelph Statement” that was released in November 2021.

An environmental objective has also been added to BRM programming. There is now an environmental cross-compliance component for larger farms wanting to participate in the AgriInvest program. In addition, further avenues will be explored to integrate climate risk and readiness into BRM programs. We are concerned this may make an already complex suite of programs even more complicated, which conflicts with the goal of simplifying AgriStability. CCA believes there are more effective and impactful ways to incentivize environmental stewardship on Canadian farms and ranches

The Canadian beef industry has identified aggressive 10-year industry goals and a national research and technology transfer strategy to achieve these goals. With an increased funding envelope, the beef sector will be better equipped to deliver on some of our ambitious environmental and productivity goals.

The Sustainable CAP announcement shows that the FPT agriculture ministers’ have heard our concerns on several key issues. We will continue to actively engage with government representatives on the rollout of this new policy framework and advocate for the addition of new initiatives including the critical and urgent need to establish a national Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccine bank for Canada.

On July 22, 2022, Canada’s federal, provincial, and territorial (FPT) agriculture ministers announced $500 million in new funds for the Next Agricultural Policy Framework, to be known as the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP). This marks a 25 per cent increase from the previous HereFramework.isasnapshot

As cattle producers, we understand the importance of implementing best management practices on our farms and ranches. As a result, we have advocated for direct payments to primary producers for the Ecological Goods and Services (EG&S) we provide. We were pleased to see the announcement of the Resilient Agricultural Landscapes Program (RALP), which comes with $250 million dollar investment and aims to provide incentives to agricultural producers for native grassland conservation efforts, perennial cover activities, and regenerative agricultural practices. The devil is in the details and the specifics of RALP remain unknown. In advance of the details being developed, CCA will advocate to ensure the program meets the intended objectives and benefits beef producers from across Canada.

With the Canadian Agriculture Partnership (CAP) set to expire within the next year, our board members and policy team have worked hard alongside our provincial members to advocate for enhancements to programming that would benefit cattle producers from across Canada. We took every opportunity possible throughout the consultation process to share our ideas. Key policy priority areas that we focused on included business risk management (BRM), the environment, animal health, and research and innovation.

of the notable policies for Canadian cattle producers announced in Sustainable CAP:

The 25 per cent increase in the funding envelope is welcome news for research and innovation in the sector. We have advocated for continued investments in research programs aimed not only at key environmental challenges, but also enhancing productivity are critical. This is a key ingredient to the success and sustainability of our sector.

By acting on a clinical case recognizing it early and follow testing and culling will go a long-ways to keeping incidence very low in the beef industry. You then may be able to hopefully totally eliminate it over time. It is why it is a notifiable disease in most provinces and together we can hope to keep it out of most purebred herds. I have heard of several incidences where both herds benefited from early detection and good communication between neighbours. That is the goal and maintaining the purebred herds reputation for quality genetics and high health known around the world.

If you get a positive test the beauty is in the purebred industry you know the calves that cow may have had and where they are so they could be tested if two years or older. Also if purchased the original breeder could do the same to trace it back in their herd. Sometimes nothing is found and in recent research wildlife can be incriminated as deer and elk also can get this disease. Bison can succumb as well with their clinical signs generally. Veterinarians are looking for co-morbidities. This means other maybe subclinical diseases that stress the cow and make them more susceptible to getting and breaking with Johne’s disease. This could be internal or external parasites as an example. Johne’s is contagious but it takes exposure over a period of time and generally exposure at a young age to contract it. Most cases it has been contracted as a calf in the first six months of its life. If the clinical case was not purchased the next potential group to check in a herd is the same age cohorts as the clinical case that were born and housed or pastured together as calves.

+ 20

Johne’s Disease Identification Specifically in Purebred Herds

The biggest thing is don’t panic get testing done and if positive then develop a plan with your veterinarian. If the animal was purchased it behooves you to notify the breeder that raised the calf. It may be a dead end where the source cant be clearly found. Again this condition can go on for years without being detected but a very good chance the cow/ bull picked it up when a lot younger often from its mother. Often the original breeder may not even know they have it but they can be hyper vigilant.

Calves and bred heifers are too young to test as they would always show up negative so concentrate on primarily the age group where one is clinical. Really valuable animals such as flush cows can be isolated to keep from contaminating others until too much weight loss has occurred and then shipped for slaughter

The disease is really slow to show itself so sometimes can be slower to get rid of. If exposure is highly suspicious in certain animals it may take testing over several years to make sure they are clean. I have dealt with cases in clinical practise and most veterinarians have so not panicking keeping client confidentiality in mind not pointing fingers and systematically developing a plan to eliminate it over time works well.

I need to be clear Johne’s disease is out in the cattle industry but at pretty low levels. In a survey in western Canadian commercial herds by Dr. Campbell and others at Saskatoon 1.6% of cattle tested positive and 5.4 % of the herds had at least two cases. My hope is that this level is even lower in purebred herds but we don’t know that for sure and we must not ignore the diarrheic cow. Even if you cull the animal right away which is a good thing I would get a fecal test as it is valuable information going forward. If not too thin they can be shipped for slaughter and will pass inspection. Condemnation of the carcass only comes with very severe emaciation. You want to ideally get rid of them long before this.

Johne’s disease pronounced “Yonees” is a very slow developing insidious disease that can creep into your herd. The classic case is one where diarrhea and weight loss continue over a period of time. This is in spite of having a good appetite and nothing else apparently wrong. It has a very long incubation period of about two years or longer. Experimentally they have been able to induce clinical signs as early as eighteen months but the average age in most cow herds is five years or so. It is caused by a mycobacterium organism and the spread between animals is usually the fecal to oral route. This is why cows will often spread it to their calves because the organism is being shed in the manure. Although shedding can be intermittent it is young animals that often contract it from shedding mothers at under six months of age.

Vets ADVICE

Purebred herds to me have several reasons to be hyper vigilant for this disease and take steps to stamp it out if it is detected. First off the value of purebred cattle and the fact that selling offspring into other herds including breeding bulls is your livelihood and reputation. That plus the fact that the stigma associated with the disease can be damaging. Purebred producers often buy calves or bred heifers from other breeders and herd bulls so are introducing outside genetics which is a good thing. There is always a rare possibility of introducing something like Johne’s disease. Most commercial breeders only bring in their herd sires so maintain a somewhat closed herd as far as females are concerned it they raise their own replacements. That is not possible or desired in the purebred industry and so in the unlikely event Johne’s were ever to be diagnosed I want to offer some steps to help you start to eradicate it.

The biggest advice I can give as I say is not to panic develop a strategy to test selectively and remove ship or isolate positives. They do what they call a pooled PCR where five animals are combined and if negative they all are negative. If positive they go back and individually test to find out the specific positives. This technique can save lots of dollars in the testing process and find if any subclinical carriers. Work closely with your veterinarian to develop a strategy that works for your herd.

It never hurts to review manure management and this helps with other diseases such as calf scours. Having a clean calving area and keeping cohorts together say in 50 cow calf pairs at calving, using a different loader bucket for feeding and manure management are great strategies. Cleaning the bucket before feeding if just used it for manure loading is another strategy to prevent spread. This disease had been around for along time and was often many years ago diagnosed as hardware disease.

By Roy Lewis, DVM

Anytime you have an animal with unexplained weight loss try and get a actual diagnosis and especially if diarrhea in a mature animal Johne’s should be a possibility in the back of your mind or your veterinarians. If it dies and is thin please get an autopsy to confirm the diagnosis or minimally send in a manure sample to rule it out.. Have a discussion with your veterinarian and do testing if need be. A fecal PCR test which measures the DNA of Mycobacterium in the manure I think is pretty accurate on the clinical cases and cases soon to be clinical.

Au niveau de l’Association des producteurs de bovins du Canada (“CCA”), ils ont adopté un nouveau nom et une nouvelle image avec l’Association Canadienne du bétail (ACB). D’après le communiqué de presse suivant, ce changement a été fait avec la volonté d’adopter une nouvelle marque plus neutre pour cette organisation et tous ses membres, et pour promouvoir l’image d’une organisation plus inclusive;
