From the desk at T Bar… Welcome to the 15th Annual “Best Of The Breeds” Bull Sale on Sunday, March 24th, at Heartland Livestock, Yorkton, Saskatchewan. Started by Merv and Barb Schmidt, Belmont Charolais, in the early years it was the “best kept secret” but over the past several years the secret is out! Top quality bulls from these six breeders have been selected by breeders and ranchers in the prairie provinces, also to Ontario, Quebec, B.C., Nova Scotia and the United States. Several of these bulls have gone on to be “top shelf” sires. “Best of the Breeds” has become a “one-stop” shopping event where producers can select bulls to complete breeding intentions. The continental influence with performance comes through the Simmental (red, black and Fleck), the Gelbvieh and Charolais, while the Angus division, both red and black offer performance with a degree of calving ease and high maternal values which become replacements to the national beef herd. The criteria to have bulls in the sale is based on quality, where no bulls are selected from the individual herds, therefore the best of the best sells here…that is why, in some years, breeders have less bulls. It’s the assurance of quality! The bulls will be available for viewing the night before at Heartland and for those looking for a preview, visit the respective farms or ranches where you can see the bulls in their natural environment and their mothers. Welcome to the 15th Annual Best of the Breeds Bull Sale. Thank you to all previous buyers and bidders for your interest in the Twin Heritage Farms program. Another year has passed and we continue to see advancement in our cow herd and in our bull sale offering. The rigorous culling of both the heifer and bull pen is paying dividends. Every year we retain the top 15% of our yearling females for our breeding stock and it is rewarding to see so many young cows raising the herd bulls that we have on offer this year. We focus on the maternal side of our program with an emphasis on fertility, sound udder structure and good feet. Our bull pen represents the top 20% of our 2018 calf crop and it is as consistent as it has ever been. The bulls are pail fed a customized bull developer ration to ensure responsible development and longevity.

Trigger 31F is a wide based, strong topped and deep bull that carries himself well. He has a modest birth weight and doesn’t give up anything when it comes to performance. His maternal grand dam is our 128N cow that stood the test of time raising 12 calves for us. She wasn’t the biggest cow, but always raised a good one. There is strength in this cow family as she is also the maternal grand dam for the 19F bull (Lot 46).

Trigger 19F comes out of a good producing, sound uddered dam. He is free moving, thick and exhibits good muscle pattern. As with all the Trigger 80B sons, 19F has good testicle development and is strong topped. Trigger 80B is no longer with us and there will only be a handful of his sons available next year.

Trigger 40F is one of the few power bulls of the offering. He has a solid dark foot, beautiful deep red color and was the number one indexing bull at weaning. His dam is a top young producer that traces back to our herd matron, Raven 54L. If you look closely at our cow families, you will notice that the Raven family is the most prolific. Top producing, good udder structure and great temperament are the highlights of this cow family.

We can’t say enough good things about our Motivator 4B calves and continue to be impressed with the overall consistency of his calves. We are excited with our Detour 161D calves. They stand out right from birth and have been extremely consistent in their development. This sire group is moderate in frame with balance, depth and moderate birth weights. We used Detour 161D on our heifers and have had no troubles calving. Having the maternal cow family tracing back to the 54L cow is always a good thing. Detour 21F is a long sided, smooth fronted bull with good neck extension backed by our consistent producing Raven cow family. The cross of Detour on our Soldier daughters is one that we will see more of.

Here is a bull we think highly of. Detour 24F is well balanced, free moving and offers tremendous capacity and muscle in a moderate frame. He has excellent scrotal development and shape, has a good dark foot and is very correct on his feet and legs. His dam has a tight, evenly quartered udder with small teets and did a tremendous job with 24F. He is one of the highest indexing bulls overall and has a lot of the qualities that we look for in a herd sire. Detour 24F is one of the best footed and most complete bulls that we have offered for sale and we are confident that he has the potential to make an impact in the breed.
