craig angus On behalf of Craig Angus welcome to the 28th Top Cut Bull Sale. Our purebred and commercial herd is managed the same. Herd bulls are turned out July 1 for 60 days. The past few years with lack of rain and cost of feed it has become very important to cull any female that is not producing. The first winter the bull calves are kept with our steers and fed for an average daily gain of 2 pounds per day. They go to grass the first part of May until October when they are brought back home and wintered in a 20 acre field until sale day. At no point in their development have they ever been fed high levels of grain to achieve “target weight” that looks good in a catalog but are detrimental in the longevity of the bull. I see no point in risking a bull’s future for a few extra pounds on sale day if he can’t make it through the breeding season without breaking down. All bulls will be semen tested by Creekside Veterinary Service and have received their first two shots of the footrot vaccine and will just need their booster shot before turn out. If you have any questions feel free to call or stop in and have a look at the bulls. They will be at home until 25th of March. Please consider this your invitation to join us on March 27th. FORBES angus Welcome to the 2020 edition of the Top Cut Bull Sale. It is with much anticipation that we are bringing this bunch to town. There are many feature and top end bulls in our consignment. We have groups of half and threequarter brothers to compare and select from. My program is based on raising these bulls at a balanced growth rate. During the first winter, they are fed at modest gains, so our 365 day weights are most comparable in herd. As yearlings they mature naturally on grass until October. At this time they are started gradually on a ration developed by Cargill for growing bulls. Long yearlings are fed this ration at 1% of body weight mixed with dry hay.

The purebred and commercial cow herd here at the ranch endure some dramatic environments. It is very important that our cows can maintain their condition efficiently. Genetics that are functional in terms of hair coat, disposition, and feet. Birth weights that are below or equal to the breed average. Calving issues are not acceptable. We have recorded performances on the purebreds for over 20 years. If an animal doesn’t produce in our conditions, they don’t stay, and underachieving bloodlines are discontinued.

My standard of quality is a continuous process of analysis and research. If you have any questions about the bulls please don’t hesitate to contact me. I purchased Crossfire in 2018 at the Six Mile sale. He stood out to me as a calving ease sire. His moderate birth weight was complemented with enough performance to still produce pounds. He has a very subtle temperament. His offspring are all off first calf heifers, and they are an impressive bunch!

bearcreek creekANGUS ANGUS bear Directions to ranch: 4 miles south of Piapot and 1½ miles west The past three years have been hard on the feed supply, but these tougher years just further instill in us that Black Angus cattle are the ones that can get us through the tough years. There are many tools at one’s disposal in selecting your next breeding genetics: performance data, EPD’s, genetic testing, carcass data; but for myself nothing beats the process of culling. In a world of efficiency, I focus on cattle that will walk soundly the duration of their lives, milk and breed without any maintenance. This leads to fewer cull cows, requiring fewer heifer calves retained, maximizing calf production. When the structure, udder quality, and fertility is taken care of: I breed for length of body, eye appealing angus character, including an angus head which promotes calving ease, and naturally developing muscle definition. I don’t expect my bulls to develop on a duck’s breakfast (a drink of water and a look around) but they should muscle up and carry weight with a moderate amount of feed intake. Beef cattle have been compared to pork and poultry, but one aspect will always vary, our environment. It changes what type of cattle work where and on what inputs. Our cattle are raised on ranch conditions and developed slowly to ensure longevity. We solely make our living raising cattle, commercial and purebred, and our cattle work for us because we need them to. And I believe they can work for you too. Jackson is impressive. Starting with large, good feet, legs with a little extra bone to them and natural thickness with an attractive angus head. His bulls are sure to please, they check all the boxes, but even more so do his heifers; they are incredibly consistent with a stamp to them. The first crop of heifers calved last year and their udder development is second to none. Aside from that, he’s an outcross pedigree that does not sacrifice quality in any shape or form. Right now, Jackson and Stoney are our flagship herdsires. I don’t believe we can ask for much more than these two sires do, and we are very fortunate to own them.

Last year my bulls in the catalogue started with a maternal brother that went to Drowning Ford. He’s also had maternal brothers sell to Dale Easton, Jess Parsonage, and Jay Stokke. There’s a lot of breeding potential in this bull, with Jackson on the top side and 796W on the bottom side. Here’s another herd sire prospect. His damn raised thirteen calves until the age of fifteen. Designated as an elite/premier damn she really embodied the ideal angus cow. At fifteen years of age, her feet and udder were still perfect and she spent her last summer at the 76 grazing co-op maintaining good condition and bringing home a whopping bull calf. We had high hopes when we purchased ‘Stoney’, and he’s exceeded all of them. His heifers are flat out amazing, the bull calves are the most consistent that we’ve raised. Recommended for Heifers. Designated Canadian bred bull from a very nice Stoney daughter. Due to bull injuries we used this bull to clean up some our heifers last spring. TERMS OF SALE: The terms of the sale are cash or cheque, made payable in Canadian funds immediately after the sale. The right of ownership shall not pass from seller to buyer until settlement is made. As soon as the animal is sold it becomes the responsibility of the purchaser. BREEDING GUARANTEE: All cattle are sound and sell with a responsible breeder guarantee of satisfaction. In the event any bull 14 months of age or over fails to prove a breeder after being used on cows known to be breeders, within six months of the sale date, may be returned to the seller at the buyers expense. The seller reserves the privilege of trying to prove that animal a breeder. Full settlement and satisfaction of all claims is the option of the seller (whether return of the purchase price or replacement of the animal with one of equal value.) Any animal returned must be free of disease and in good health. CATTLE INSPECTION: All carry permanent identity tags corresponding to the sale lot numbers.
