Flint - How it Started

It was a delightful village based Ladieswear, gift and soft furnishings boutique based in Groby. Set in two quaint stone cottages which we believed to be about 350 years old and had been knocked into one.

The stone that was used to build these chocolate box cottages was flint – hence the name! flint

We opened late in 2006 ready for our first Christmas. But as like a lot of small high streets, shops and Banks closed around us, until there was only a couple of shops left, so I made the very hard decision to re-locate the shop and we chose Syston, as this is where my mum lives and worked, running the old pet shop opposite the cinema that is now Tesco, then in the village bakery. So, here we are now in the old (as I remember it) Wades furniture shop. The calm décor provides a relaxed atmosphere in which to browse the colour co-ordinated rails of Ladies clothes, shoes, costume jewellery, handbags, cards, small items of furniture and homewares, prints, mirrors, candles and a range of giftware from children’s toys, unusual gifts for that special person or just something that reminds you of a friend.

Syston Woman Climbs Mount Toubkal to Raise Funds for Marie Curie in Memory of Nan

Sophie took on the challenge in memory of her Nan Sheila who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in September 2012 and who sadly died at home in August 2013 on her husband’s birthday with her family by her side.

Sophie said:

“This climb truly was a life changing experience for me. We woke up super early on the day of the climb, fully equipped with our mountain boots, gloves and head torches ready to start our summit push.

“We left in the dark and slowly began our ascent up to the top. The weather conditions were very tough and gave us a full winter climb experience which was completely different to anything I’ve had the chance to do before.

“The morning she died, they came back and gently removed all the medical equipment she had been wired to, one of the nurses even went into the garden to pick some flowers and placed them in my Nan’s hands, such a thoughtful gesture and one we have never forgotten.

“Marie Curie made an enormous difference to my Nan’s final days; they enabled us to carry out her wish of being at home surrounded by her family. Without them we wouldn’t have been able to cope, and we have never forgotten how amazing they were when we needed them, we will be forever grateful.

Sophie adds:

A Syston woman climbed the highest mountain in North Africa to raise money for the charity which cared for her nan. Sophie Suffolk, 24, braved high winds and freezing temperatures to reach the summit of Mount Toubkal near Marrakesh, Morroco, raising £800 for end of life charity Marie Curie.

She was part of 17-strong group of adventurers who completed the challenge in March.

The challenge included a six-hour trek with deep snow to the base of the mountain (3,200 meters above sea level), an overnight camp, and a four hour ascent to the top of the mountain 4,176 meters above sea level - all while braving temperatures of -15C and windspeeds of 60kph.

“After four hours myself and the team, with the help of our fantastic guides, reached the top and spent some time taking in the amazing views and pictures to capture the achievement, before our descent.

“I decided to take on this personal challenge as I wanted to raise as much money as possible for Marie Curie to thank them for all their help in allowing my Nan to spend her final 10 days at home.

“The nurses came to the house and administered essential medication, they re-positioned her every few hours, tending to her with so much care and kindness. During her last night, the nurses knew she didn’t have long and called in several times to ensure she was not in distress.

“I want to say a BIG thank you to the members at The Warehouse Gym, my friends and family who have all supported me in helping raise over £800 for Marie Curie so that they can continue to care for families in their time of need.”

Abby Lockett, Community Fundraiser for Marie Curie in Leicestershire said:

“Thanks to amazing supporters like Sophie, Marie Curie has been there for millions of people affected by terminal illness over the past 75 years. Today our work is more needed than ever. With your continued support we can ensure a future where everyone gets the best possible end of life care.”
